I saw you at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center. You and a man (husband?) were waiting at the valet for your minivan.

You and this man had pushed a stroller with a months-old baby boy in it. I began to admire your baby while you sat next to me with this other man standing beside you.

The baby began to fuss, but neither of you would stop texting long enough to even look at the child. All you did, without looking away from your phone, was to reach into the diaper bag and pull out some type of musical toy and place it in the baby's hand.

Absolutely no eye contact, no verbal soothing—nothing. You need to realize that the baby wanted to be soothed by you or his dad … not an electronic toy! I am glad I didn’t have a cellphone in the ’70s, because babies need human contact and love, not another gadget.

District Nein The Santa Clara Valley Water District plays by its own rules, which is especially easy when its rules were made to be broken.

Last month, CEO BEAU GOLDIE ignored his own staff’s allegations regarding improper billings by consultant RMC Water and Environment. He boldly announced that the $2.3 million paid to RMC for its Lower Silver Creek work followed all district policies. But a review of documents found that senior counsel LESLIE ORTA alerted top-level staff as far back as September 2014 that Goldie ran afoul of rules by repeatedly increasing RMC contracts without board approval. Since then, the district has refused to comment on or release the emails, dubiously invoking attorney-client privilege. That aligns with a previous decision to shield a “firewall” agreement with MELANIE RICHARDSON, a senior district staffer who coincidentally happens to be married to one of RMC’s owners.

Goldie and others maintain that Richardson steered clear of RMC business, even though They she supervised the work Did of district staffers who What? did. Unrelenting work culture leads to tech shift in how we treat sleep

S

teve Young knew he had a winning technology, he just didn’t know what to do with it. He and some friends developed an ultra-sensitive scale that could detect heartbeat and respiration after another friend came home from the hospital with a premature baby. The baby needed a heart rate monitor on at all times, but there was no good way to attach it.

“Because the baby’s skin was so sensitive, the glue to hold the monitor on was really weak,” Young says. “They’d fall off, and there were all these false alarms that something was wrong.”

Young’s creation eschewed a wearable heart rate monitor, and instead had the scale wear, or weigh, the baby. While the scale worked well for newborns, Young wanted to create an application for adults. “Babies are really important, and we wanted to do that for altruistic reasons, but there wasn’t a big enough market for it,” he says.

Young approached a Stanford physician who gave him a one-word answer: sleep. Instead of measuring a baby’s heart rate and respiration, the scale could be integrated into a mattress and used to track the metrics of an adult’s sleep patterns.

Having worked at Apple for 10 years, Young and Richard Rifredi, the friend whose son was born 12 weeks premature, founded San Jose-based Bam Labs to create Sleep IQ, a sleep tracking system that works inside Sleep Number beds.

“What we’re trying to do is give people a glimpse into a part of their life that they couldn’t see before,” says Pete Bils, vice president of sleep innovation and clinical research for Sleep Number, which acquired Bam Labs—now known as Sleep IQ Labs— this year for $58 million.

Sleep IQ is part of a growing $32 billion industry dedicated to sleep— including pills, medical devices, sleep centers, mattresses, and now, electronic gadgets. Studies have shown that Americans have terrible sleep habits.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the problem is worse here in Silicon Valley.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said that when she worked for Google, she put in 130-hour work weeks. Jack Dorsey, cofounder and CEO of Twitter and Square, said that he regularly works 16-20 hour days, leaving little time for sleep.

Meanwhile, Silicon Valley lore tells of startup employees working such long hours that they live at the office, only able to catch a few hours of rest by sleeping under their desks. “There’s a social stigma to sleeping eight hours, especially in the high tech world,” says Bils.

“The power of it isn’t the night’s worth of data—it’s over time, as you start to connect the dots on how your daytime habits and routines, your nighttime environment, how that all affects the quality of your sleep,” Bils says.

An app called F.lux tries to eliminate the harmful effects of blue light from electronic screens.

The app determines the sunrise and sunset times of a person’s location, and adjusts the screen’s brightness and color throughout the day to minimize the amount of blue light eyes absorb at nighttime.

“We want to return people to having a connection with how their body actually feels, instead of the technology version that might keep you up all night,” says Michael Herf, president of the Los Angeles-based company.

“Everybody’s communicating all the time, so there’s no way to say, ‘Stop using technology.’ I think we’re trying to figure out how to make it fit our lives a little bit better.”

Another gadget, originally developed for autistic children who can’t wear headphones because of tactile sensitivity, the Dreampad plays ambient music through transducers embedded in a pillow. Unlike most speakers, the Dreampad’s sound frequencies move through solid matter—the head against the pillow—instead of airwaves. Sound vibrations then stimulate the brain’s parasympathetic nervous system, which controls relaxation, in a way that music played through normal speakers can’t.

While the harmful effects of technology in the bedroom are well documented, the benefits of new sleep gadgets remain a new field short on studies.

While praising F.lux as “absolutely” helpful, PAMF’s Liebman also points out that many of the sleep apps on the market are nothing new.

“Sometimes the apps are something you can get from a non-smart phone,” he says. “There have been sleep noise machines forever.”

While technology may be useful in getting a better night’s rest, Bils of Sleep Number says that what’s also needed is a change in how society views sleep.

“Most people live their day, then whatever’s leftover is for sleep,” he says. “But it should be the other way around. We should dedicate sevenand-a-half or eight hours a day to sleep, and build everything around that. That’s how you’ll be happy.”

An estimated 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders or sleep deprivation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 9 million adults rely on prescription sleep aids. Chronic sleep deprivation has effects beyond sleepiness the next morning—those who don’t get enough rest are at higher risk for diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, depression, obesity, the common cold and car accidents.

“The value of sleep is definitely underestimated by the vast majority of people,” says Ross Liebman, a sleep specialist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Sleep Center. Part of the reason for this, he explains, is that people can usually get by without it in the short term.

Many researchers are now pointing to technology—particularly cell phones, tablets, computers and TVs in the bedroom—as one explanation for sleep deprivation.

“You can go back to when electricity started,” Liebman says. “Before electricity, people might read or talk, then go to bed—it was a much less stimulating environment. Now people have 300plus TV channels, Internet that never stops, handheld devices, they can look at data anytime, anywhere. It’s almost an overload to their sensory system, which makes it hard to calm down at night.”

According to a report from the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), twothirds of young adults, ages 19-29, bring cell phones into their bedrooms when they try to go to sleep. Twenty percent of the same demographic report being woken up in the middle of the night by their phones. Research out of Harvard Medical School shows that the blue light emitted by electronic devices can stop the brain’s release of the hormone melatonin and delay sleepiness. This means watching TV late at night, or reading on a smartphone or tablet in bed, makes it harder to fall asleep at the proper hour. Many doctors now recommend switching off screens at least an hour before bedtime—and banning them from the bedroom.

But a new crop of companies want to put technology back in the bed by showing that high-tech gadgets can actually improve sleep.

Sleep IQ’s sensors, placed inside a Sleep Number bed, take 500 readings per second to determine movement and respiration throughout the night.

Analyzing these and other measures, Sleep IQ calculates a numerical “grade”

who used technology for humanitarian purposes.

No Smug at Silicon Valley Tech Awards BY JOSH KOEHN Silicon Valley has always suffered from a split personality, and for that it can be thankful that it only halfresembles Wall Street.

The expectation that a business, or startup or an app should have to save the world, or at least extend a helping hand, is to forget that companies have only recently become human, and only to the extent that they are better equipped to fund political free speech. This is Silicon Valley, where most new ideas are anointed as disruptive, or a game changer, even if many of us don’t know where or what game is being played.

Last week, the Tech Museum held its annual award show, and I expected to take a resigned part in that game, to be wowed for all the wrong reasons. But every now and then a cynic finds an event that flips expectations, regardless of the black ties and ball gowns.

The Tech Awards, now in its 15th year, celebrated 10 laureates in the Santa Clara Convention Center, all of whom have leveraged technology for humanitarian purposes—and not just because saving the world seems like a clever marketing strategy.

All recipients were well-deserving of trophies, but a few in particular blew away a writer who had every intention of removing a peg from the pedestal: DayOne Response, founded by Tricia Compas-Markman, creates 10-liter bags for people hit by natural disasters. In just 30 minutes, the bags and a powder solution can transform dirty, bacteria-laced water into a drinkable supply in emergency situations. She demonstrated its use at Golden Gate Park.

One of the coolest winners of the night was Martin Aufmuth’s One Dollar Glasses. The German schoolteacher’s wife told him to

stop complaining and do something to address a global lack of access to affordable eyeglasses. Aufmuth created a box for engineering “German quality” frames, which cost just €1 and can manufacture up to 50,000 pairs.

Near the end of the show I bumped into Paul Mesarcik, the 25-year-old South African creator of Lumkani, a fire detection system for “informal settlements,” or what might be called shantytowns. Smoke detectors, he found, were impractical for most of these homes, because people use open fires for cooking, heat and reading light. At an age when I was still getting kicked out of school, Mesarcik has found a way to save lives and remain self-effacing.

Silicon Valley won’t save the world on its own, but for one night it provided a much-needed reprieve from the suggestion that it’s supposed to all alone.

Another Jail Inmate Dies A 51-year-old Santa Clara County inmate died Friday, according to the Sheriff ’s Office. Jailers found him blacked out on the floor of his cell at Elmwood Correctional Facility and sent him to the hospital, where he died an hour later.

This marks either the seventh or the eighth inmate death in county jails in 2015. The exact tally isn’t clear, as the Sheriff’s Office has provided San Jose Inside with inconsistent records. By the most recent count, however, the Nov. 13 death is the eighth of the year and at least the 40th since 2010. The man’s name has not been released. Michael Tyree The county came under intense scrutiny this summer after the fatal beating of Michael Tyree. On Aug. 27, the 31-year-old mentally ill inmate was found bloodied and battered on his cell floor. Three correctional deputies have been charged with murder in connection to his death.

More recently, on Sept. 28, 33-yearold Walter Roches died in his cell on the eighth-floor psychiatric ward of the Main Jail. A week earlier, guards had forcibly removed him from his cell—a “cell extraction” in correctional argot—with pepper spray and rubber projectiles.

Authorities ruled out foul play but, even after an autopsy, never publicly disclosed the cause of death.

In September, 81-year-old Richard Stefanik—a Los Gatos resident accused of murdering his wife to end her suffering after a surgery—took his own life. Noriko Seales, 50, locked up on drug charges, died of heart disease just days before. Paul Pierce, 73, died in June of spine injuries from a fall. Hector Lozano, 32, died in May by suicide.

Anthony Townsend died in March of undisclosed causes.

Silicon Valley’s original garage rock band, The Chocolate Watchband, eschews kitschy nostalgia

T

he only San Jose band to share a lead singer with the HarvardSmithsonian Center for Astrophysics is returning to its home turf this weekend.

The Chocolate Watchband initially came to life 50 years ago at Foothill College, but the legendary ’60s psychedelic garage-rock specialists played so many shows in San Jose that the city became their hometown. It stuck to them.

The ’60s-era members went on to various other exploits. Guitarist Tim Abbott now owns KVP Studios on Lawrence Expressway. Singer David Aguilar went on teach astrophysics and write science books for National Geographic. But during its heyday in the last half of the ’60s, The Chocolate Watchband carved out quite a niche, successfully blending garage and psychedelic rock, beginning with a Stones-style R&B influence, and then eventually expanding into a more experimental multi-instrumental dimension, incorporating elements of surf, jazz and '60s exotica.

Locally, the band gigged at a variety of now-forgotten venues like Napredak Hall, the Continental Roller Rink,

the Spectrum in Redwood City, Homer's Warehouse in Palo Alto, and Winchester Cathedral in Redwood City. They played everywhere, almost daily, and even appeared in two films, 1967’s Riot on Sunset Strip and The Love-Ins. In the former case, the B-grade counterculture exploitation masterpiece featured the Watchband playing a few songs with Rickenbackers, mod haircuts and the whole nine yards. YouTube clips are everywhere. The band only lasted about five years before falling apart, but aficionados claim the Watchband were one of the best garage-rock outfits ever.

After reforming in 1999, the band has traveled through a few more phases and returns this Saturday to the Ritz in downtown San Jose. Joining them will be Darryl Hooper from the Seeds, adding a quintessential ’60s keyboard element to the band’s already eclectic panoply of sonic exploration.

Remarkably, there seems to be no sense of dreamy nostalgia about any of this, no sense of reliving the past. For a

bunch of dudes pushing 70, the band members don’t seem to be banking on previous careers at all. Instead, they just want to offer groovy tunes that transcend generations. There’s a reason why those Nuggets albums still have a cult following all the way to Europe and South America, and there’s a reason why the band’s recent shows in Southern California attracted a mostly younger audience. What’s more, for the upcoming San Jose gig, we thankfully won’t see any “50th anniversary” marketing schlock. The band is above such nonsense.

“We really don’t care about that stuff,” Abbott says. “People who want us and who like Chocolate Watchband music, they know we’re not saying, ‘Oh, let’s look how long we’ve been together.’ We just want to make music that people want to come and rock to.”

As an example, Abbott says, recent Watchband gigs in Southern California and Europe elicited emotional reactions from fans who seemed thrilled to experience vibes from decades ago but not in some kitschy, nostalgic way. The music resonated beyond any possible age difference, indicating the band’s influence clearly lives on.

Local guitarist Derek See, for instance, worships at the altar of ’60s music. In addition to playing guitar for opening band The Gentle Cycle, he will also sit in with Watchband for a few numbers.

Even though See wasn’t alive during Watchband’s original heyday, he discovered them on Nuggets collections and a Rhino Records compilation when he was 11 years old.

“Hearing them and hearing all that music is part of what set me up on the path of hardcore record collecting at a young age,” See recalls. “One thing that set the Watchband apart from other garage bands is that their records were very good. They weren’t sloppy. They were tight. They were pros. They weren’t screwing around.

They were the real deal.”

See’s participation is an example of how the music is being passed down from generation to generation in San Jose. It should be inspiring to watch.

INTXO POTE, a Spanish tapas bar in Los Gatos, feels like a well-kept secret. Small plates dining has taken off in recent years, but the restaurant, almost hidden in a modest strip of stores, keeps it authentic with Basque-style tapas.

The small plates leave guests wanting more, and that’s a good thing, because the menu offers many temptations, from an artful spread of Spanish cheese and meat ($26) to codfish croquettes ($6), perfectly crisped with a buttery center.

In Basque, the word pintxo, a variation on tapas, refers to the toothpicks that are speared through each snack, which are often served at the bar. At the end of the meal, the bartender counts the picks left on the plate and charges accordingly. At Pintxo Pote, the tapas can be enjoyed as a quick snack over a glass of wine, or combined with other dishes to create a full meal. Two of the best options include the albondigas de cordero ($6), peppery lamb meatballs, and brocheta de setas ($6), a skewer of grilled mushrooms dusted with sea salt.

There is ample room to pull up a stool at the long bar, which dominates the space in true tapas bar fashion, while a few booths and tables provide a spot to settle in for a longer evening.

Pintxo Pote excels at simple dishes such as the tortilla, an omelet of egg and potato. Here, the classic Spanish dish is prepared to order and served as a warm, saucer-sized cake, available plain ($9), or with chorizo ($9) or mushrooms ($11).

The chef knows when to step back and let the quality of the ingredients shine, as in the queso de cabra a la plancha ($8), a dish of grilled goat cheese, passion fruit sauce, and a sprinkle of crushed pistachios. Likewise, the pulpo a la plancha ($13), tender coins of grilled octopus over a creamy cauliflower puree, is more than the sum of its parts. The restaurant understands simple pleasures.

Servers, including affable owner Hector Figuero and his wife, are happy to steer diners who are unfamiliar with tapas-style dining through the menu and the excellent wine list.

Desserts, such as a brownie served with gelato and topped with almond slices ($7) are available, but with tapas this good, the cheese board—featuring a selection of Spanish cheeses ($26), or the excellent fried goat cheese—is the best way to finish a meal.—Rita Cameron Pintxo Pote 424 N. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I found Tao Buddhism nine years ago and I decided to [become vegetarian] to help this world,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;By eating veggies, we can cut out a lot of the polluting of the environment, [improve] our health and [show] compassion to animals.â&#x20AC;?

Ethical considerations will only go so far for some, though. The menuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diverse fusion of Asian American cuisine renders meat obsolete. The Green Barn serves everything from mozzarella sticks ($6.95) and Kung Pao stir fry ($9.95) to fresh-blended avocado smoothies ($4.50). Most of the dishes are built from local produce and 90 percent of them are certiďŹ ed vegan.

When I visited, the food came out lickety-split in a vibrant array of greens, reds and yellows. I ate a crisp, spicy-sweet-and-sour salad of shredded young papaya covered in peanuts, cilantro sprigs and carrot strands ($8.95). It was incredible. I considered if all salads should be papaya-based.

I moved on to the coconut-creamy, full-bodied Thai curry ($11.95) featuring soft, nutty garbanzo beans, tasty rounds of okra and savory tofu pillows. I also bit into the thick, marinated portobello burger ($9.50) topped with caramelized onions and wilted spinach. And I sampled some forkfuls of chow mein ($9.95) with bok choy, al dente zucchini and an assertive garlic sauce. I wolfed until I was stuffedâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so stuffed I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bring myself to order dessert, even though they serve delicious-looking fried banana ($6.00). â&#x20AC;&#x153;The people who come in my restaurant are mostly meat-eaters,â&#x20AC;? Phan says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They see itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vegetarian and they want to leave, because they say theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re really hungry. So I say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Just go ahead and eat it, and if you are not ďŹ lling up, then you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to pay me.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? They end up paying, happily.

By combining hard and fast phrasings with the spooky sounds of their garage rock heroes, they pioneered a subgenre commonly known as “horror punk.” Founded by the notoriously temperamental Glenn Danzig in Lodi, New Jersey, in 1977, they helped define a generation with their gloomy aesthetic and dark, droning riffs.

After Danzig’s departure and some legal maneuvering, the band forged ahead. Many will say that post-Danzig Misfits can’t hold a candle to the original lineup, but the group still had some graveyard rock in them. Case in point: 1999’s “Helena.” (NV)

‘Figaro’ is delightfully bawdy, yet still refined

HEN ENDEAVORING to describe opera, some begin combing through a thesaurus in search of highfalutin adjectives and impassioned verbs. But in Opera San Jose’s production of Mozart’s classic— and bawdy—The Marriage of Figaro, many of the usual operatic tropes are delightfully subverted, satirized and outright mocked.

Set in a Spanish castle, the story occurs in a single, emotionally explosive day. Centered on Count Almaviva and his servant, Figaro, the plot involves the romantic liaisons

of both characters, and the count’s court—all of whom seem to be conjuring up schemes against each other. Moreover, while Figaro is the Opera’s namesake, the main character is really the Count, who, after suffering romantic embarrassments and shame, is forced to confront his own weaknesses. Ultimately, the Count has to face his court and his wife, whom he begs for forgiveness.

The opera originally premiered in September 1783 (after heavy scrutiny and censorship by King Louis XVI), and is the middle part of Pierre Beaumarchais’ Figaro trilogy, which includes The Barber of Seville and The Guilty Mother. Beaumarchais, who is also known as an early supporter of the American Revolution, used Figaro to poke fun at the aristocracy, both on a broad-scale and personally.

The shaky early history of the opera (Mozart was harassed by paid hecklers throughout the first performance) is important in understanding the radical nature of the plot. The show’s playful crassness and subversion of the establishment engenders some actual belly laughs, making it hard to imagine the same story being performed for a petulant King. But this radical chronology in many ways mirrors the plot, which emphasizes the lives and concerns of the servants, instead of the elite.

All of the characters are brought to life in this Opera San Jose adaptation, with the lead actors shining equally with the bit players. The wily but astute servant Figaro is played in a mischievous Bugs Bunny-like fashion by Ben Wager.

The countess’ maid and Figaro’s wifeto-be, Susanna, played by Amina Edris, has a powerful voice and performs with sprightly strength.

The countess, played by Isabella Ivy, delivers the standout vocal performance of the opera—effortlessly transitioning between near-dialogue and glassshattering high notes. There is a purity

to her voice that is hard to accomplish in operatic singing.

Count Almaviva, played by Matthew Hanscom, is the most gullible, incompetent, yet multidimensional character. The actor’s tittering portrayal of a mixture of anger and befuddlement is fantastic, and is important in centering the silly static of many of the other characters.

Karin Mushegain provides the standout acting performance as Cherubino. Both hyperbolic and nuanced in portraying this immature romantic, Mushegain carries much of the show through her exuberant comicality. Other notable performances include Silas Elash as Bartolo, Michael Dailey as Don Basilio and Teressa Foss as Marcellina—all of whom are respectively hilarious and instrumental in the continuation of the plot’s ludicrous love schemes.

The actors’ physical comedy is a constant source of amusement. Far in the background of big scenes, the characters are constantly providing little bits of levity. These comedic details are supported by the trim and elegant set design, which frames the physical action nicely.

As for The Marriage of Figaro’s musicality, the choruses and refrains are some of the most recognizable pieces of music in history. Employing unconventional lulls and spontaneous harmonies, the power of Mozart’s music is driven home by a careful synthesis between words and sound, where the repetition of musical phrases affirms important pieces of dialogue at a harmonious level.

Operas run on hyperbole, sometimes to their detriment. In Figaro’s case, the opposite is true. The overabundance of whimsy and physical comedy propels the opera through its complicated love triangles and schemes without any drag. Like a refined irreverence, or a elegant brashness, the opera hits both high and low humor with equally charming effect.

It can be difficult to take an already funny and classic story and keep it fresh, but Opera San Jose breathes mischievous new life into an old masterpiece.

THE DARK GALLERY is full of people. Some are sitting on the long wooden bench at the back of the room. Others mill about, shifting back and forth on the balls of their feet, comfortable position after another.

Why is it emitting a kaleidoscope of colors? A few move forward to peer behind the box, unable to let the mystery be.

The box in question—A Fire, a Freeway and a Walk, 1999-2000 (pictured)—is part of a new installation by artist Jim Campbell at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art. “Jim Campbell: New Works and Collaborations with Jane Rosen” fills three large galleries with a series of LED (light-emitting diode) displays. Upon entering the exhibit, all of the Institute’s overhead lights are turned off. It’s a departure from most gallery and museum visits where the act of looking at the art is entirely dependent on warm and inviting lights. In “New Works,” the art provides all of the light.

The first gallery holds the video installation Home Movies Pause, 2014, which dominates the wall like a small movie screen. The video that’s projected appears to be an outdoor scene in the sunshine, capturing people out for a walk in the park. But it’s hard to tell. The footage here, as in all of his work, is deliberately blurred and pixelated. The eyes strain the way they do at a visit to the optometrist. Focus is impossible and beside the point.

In his former career, Campbell put his twin MIT degrees in engineering and math to use building high definition televisions. These days, however, he is more interested in low def, a format that lends itself to conjuring the ethereal. Like the pulsating shadows of caged birds, and swimmers treading through aqueous light. Each piece becomes a television screen broadcasting a transmission from the artist’s unconscious. These fuzzy, flickering compositions have the potential to wash over the patient viewer like half-remembered dreams or distant childhood memories.

As Ernst Mach, the noted philosopher and physicist suggested, the element of wonder lies not in the phenomenon itself, but in the mind of the observer.

Decoding Campbell’s visual messages requires a certain level of viewer engagement. Allow yourself to be hypnotized by them; the reward is a series of dark, contemplative delights. —Jeffrey Edalatpour

Immigrant Song THE NEW WORLD In ‘Brooklyn,’ Saoirse Ronan plays Briony, an Irish girl who makes the long trip across the pond.

A strong script, soundtrack and cinematography anchor ‘Brooklyn’

O

NE REASON TO herald Brooklyn as one of the best films of 2015 is that it makes such an eloquent argument in favor of the classic movie studio style, while not being a slavish pastiche of the way movies were once made.

In Atonement (2007), Saoirse Ronan was Briony, the child with the piercing eyes, born to stealthily observe and to grow up to be a writer.

Ronan is 21 now, in bloom and key to

the beauty of director John Crowley’s adaptation of Colm Toibin’s novel.

Her Eilis is a determined, intelligent Irish girl of 1951 who immigrates to New York with the help of a priest named Father Flood (Jim Broadbent).

Fresh off the boat, she works at a fancy department store while learning bookkeeping at night. Eventually, she meets Italian-American boy, Tony Fiorello (Emory Cohen), with whom she falls in love. After a year’s acclimation in Brooklyn, Eilis has to return to County Wexford because of a family crisis. Back home, she’s a new and confident woman. Opportunities she never had before open up to her. These opportunities include the

attention of a propertied young man, James (Domhnall Gleeson).

Crowley’s use of unbraced camera in scenes of emotional conflict—the slight shake to give immediacy— refreshes the classic-era movie studio compositions and gives them reality.

The harmonious palette of creamy, balanced colors keep you rapt. As per Winton Hoch’s photography in The Quiet Man (the movie is name-checked) Crowley seems to have felt that a film about Ireland and the Irish should have the color green in abundance, and not just to compliment the colors of a lovely, red-headed, pale-skinned star. Even in smaller scenes—where a crowd is at the dock in Cobh, too anguished to wave farewell to a departing ship—the overcoats are in shades of emerald, aqua and forest green.

Nick Hornby's script is a delight— it suggests the abrasiveness and

hustle of this new land, without dipping into melodrama. While the characters all bring this greenhorn girl along, they all have that breadth that you get in the best kind of movie. Each could be the star of their own film. Broadbent’s warmth and heartiness is infectious; so is Julie Walters’ comic asperity as Mrs. Kehoe, the landlady trying to keep her mischievous female lodgers in line.

Tony’s little brother Frankie (James DiGiacomo) is as lively and bratty as Margaret O’Brien in Meet Me In St. Louis. As for Cohen, his performance as Tony could be star-making. Cohen has the ingratiating style James Franco is aiming for, without a lot of the self-infatuation.

The music is as well thought out as the color scheme—a band playing a church dance in Ireland prepares us for the Atlantic crossing by performing the traditional song that evolved into “Streets of Laredo” in the New World. In a wrenching scene, Eilis volunteers to serve Christmas dinner to poor old men—laborers who came to America to build the tunnels and the bridges, now too destitute to go back to Ireland. Flood is a merciful priest; he gives them Guinness to go with their turkey, and someone to sing them back home, as Merle Haggard once put it.

The only disappointment in Brooklyn is a bit of underproducing—the script seems to promise us a trip to Ebbets Field that never happens. But Brooklyn isn’t about nostalgia; it’s a lived-in past, and you can observe things we’re better off without, such as a week in steerage of an ocean liner, with rotten food and shared bathrooms.

Thank God for the aircraft keeping immigrants all but dropping off the face of the world when they leave their homes and families. Brooklyn honors the borough’s past, but there’s a lesson for the present: a gentle reminder that many of us are descended from the kind of immigrants who are feared and denounced by politicians in America today. Our good luck is the fruit of their sorrow and homesickness.

(1992) Investigating a circus of homicidal gangsters, our bifurcated hero (Michael Keaton) encounters an oddly matched pair. One is Oswald Cobblepot, a penguin-shaped sewer monster (Danny DeVito). The other is the once-murdered secretary Seline (Michelle Pfieffer), a girl of shreds and patches, who has taken on a cat as her spirit animal. Tim Burton complained of studio interference and contractual obligation, but there isn’t a frame of this movie that doesn’t bear the stamp of this strange auteur. Stagebound

but sweeping, Batman Returns is a battle cry of German Expressionism.

The witchy Pfieffer was never more beautiful than in the light of the fireplace at Wayne Manor.

DeVito’s snarling, sharped-toothed horror is a nice counterpoint to the idea that breeding always tells. And Christopher Walken is a vile scheming kingmaker with the Nosferatu-name Max Schrek.

While last year’s Birdman implicitly insulted Keaton’s work here, this hit showcases some of his best acting.

Winter Hymn LAURIE ANDERSON is a writer, filmmaker and musician. But above all, she is a performance artist. As such, in her new documentary, Heart of a Dog, Anderson approaches the subject of grief just as she approaches every subject she’s ever tackled: by sidling up on what she has to say.

“I want to tell you a story about a story,” she says, describing what a tale-teller leaves out—when codifying memory, when choosing a detail, or when leaving the most painful matters out, either by design or amnesia. Here, she narrates her nested stories through clouds of on-screen images. It’s a blend of found footage, home movies slowed and manipulated, black-onparchment animation, and images taken from a small camera mounted on the head of a dog.

She talks of the tension of reconciling Buddhist practice with her own letting go.

Her late terrier Lolabelle was no ordinary dog. Anderson recalls going on a solo trip with her pooch to the Northern California coast, in an effort to expand the animal’s reputed understanding of 500 words. The red-tailed hawks circling above, hunting, teach the territorial little animal that he has a new perimeter to observe. From here, Anderson broadens the scope of her narrative—reflecting on Sept. 11, a day

when death came from the sky. The ashes of the Twin Towers blanketing New York City in white serve to remind Anderson of her mother, who died in snowy country.

The comforting, omniscient voice is more clipped now—more urgent. There’s a shorter interval in the significant pause before Heart of a Dog she pronounces the last NR; 75 Mins. word in one of her koans.

Camera 3, But faith makes a person San Jose counterintuitive sometimes: Anderson takes the counsel of a Buddhist adviser, instead of a veterinarian.

The Buddhist advises her against putting her to sleep on the grounds that Lolabelle needed more time to process her impending death. This, to me, was idiotic.

Is it not more likely that the question of death is above a dog’s pay grade … and that this is what gives the dying of a pet its unique quality: they don’t understand it, and we do?

Otherwise, Anderson builds her story like a good song—first gone dog, then gone mother, then gone city. The last voice we hear is that of Anderson’s late husband, Lou Reed, crooning on the soundtrack. Heart of a Dog is like the Sufi proverb: “The roses are gone. What are we to do with the thorns?”

Into Left Field ‘ROCKIT’ MAN Barrett Richards, who records as Kastle, says watching Sesame Street as a kid got him interested in electronic music production.

The mainstream came knocking, so Kastle got weird

M

USICIANS DRAW inspiration from so many different places—other musicians, major events in their personal lives, political movements, drugs and spiritual experiences.

Barrett Richards, who makes murky and experimental electronic music under the moniker Kastle, says one of his earliest inspirations came in the form of Herbie Hancock performing “Rockit” on Sesame Street, using an early synthesizer, the Fairlight CMI.

“Oh, man. His ‘Rockit’ video is crazy to this day!” Richards says. He remembers being particularly drawn to Hancock’s use of electronic elements in his tunes. His interest in keyboards and samples was stoked by his older brother, who taught the young Richards the basics of programming and introduced him to the Internet at a young age.

“I lived in a really small town outside of Pittsburgh,” he says, remembering that the web was his only source for the truly obscure electronic music he craved.

“I would use an Internet radio channel, called ‘X Stream,’ run a cable from my computer to my cassette recorder and make my own mixtapes. I was a real big computer nerd back then.”

His early interest in computers and music has paid off. The DJ and

producer is regularly name-dropped by some of the most respected leftfield electronic artists making music today. He runs a tastemaking label, Symbols Recordings, and regularly tours the world—performing at festivals as large as Coachella and Burning man, and in smaller clubs, as he will do this weekend at the Back Bar SoFa. His latest album, 2013’s Polytopia, is a collection of 15 spacey, yet danceable, tracks. The album blends the U.K.centric genres of garage and grime, with sparse, glitch-riddled hip-hop rhythms.

Tracks move along languidly, as moody synth patches burble and pop— recalling acts like Actress, a way-sloweddown Machinedrum, and, at his mostexperimental, Oneohtrix Point Never.

Polytopia has been called “dark” by some—and it is indeed more brooding than some of his previous work.

According to Richards, he never set out to make a dark Kastle record. Though perhaps the fog had something to do with it.

“I was living in San Francisco around that time, and I wanted to make something that was accessible to my club music and something you could listen to in the car,” he says, explaining the time leading up to his recording of Polytopia. “I wanted to do something timeless. I don’t do things dark to be dark but I’m a big advocate of duality in life. Duality was a major theme on that album.”

Richards, who is now based in L.A., is also a believer in following his gut.

Intuition, he says, plays a major role in how he picks the artists he wants for his label. “If I feel a certain way about it, doesn’t matter what the genre is,” he says. “If you’re feeling it and if the feeling is good I will get behind it.”

Recently, Richards has gotten behind Kid Smpl from New York; French producer My.Head; WWWings, a trio of grime-inspired producers with a penchant for black metal iconography and the Amsterdam-based Moth.

If his sound and taste in label additions have become more diverse and avant garde, Richards says it is likely due to his fear of being grouped with mainstream electronic producers.

“I was being lumped into a bigger group of house music out there and it made me feel uncomfortable, like I was not being as imaginative as I wanted to be,” he says. “I definitely consider myself a left-field artist in the U.S. now and I plan on doing so going forward.”

Both as a label head and an artist, presentation is important for Richards. Like many of the albums on the gloomy indie imprint, Sacred Bones—Amen Dune, Jenny Hval, Blanck Mass—the cover art on many Symbols releases is somewhat standardized. In the same vein, Richards maintains SoundCloud and a BandCamp pages for Kastle, but says he plans to begin streaming his music through his own website, using his own media player soon.

“I don’t understand why no one has started going back to that,” he says. “It’s been really fun to be able to create a layout of what you want people to see—and you’re not limited to just SoundCloud. People forgot about presentation.”

State Law vs Federal Law ATTENTION: State governmental entities can NOT create or recreate laws that organizations and individuals simply can’t abide by or follow without blatantly violating a superior law known as the Federal (CSA) Controlled Substance Act! The first thing that everyone MUST know and fully understand is the federal “Supremacy Clause.” The Supremacy Clause is the provision in Article Six, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution. This establishes the Constitution, federal statutes, and treaties as the “supreme law of the land.” It provides that these are the highest form of law in the United States legal system, and mandates that all the state judges MUST follow federal law when a conflict arises between federal law and either a state Constitution or state law of any state.

Question: How can California establish or recreate any state law or amend the state Constitution without violating the "supreme law of the land" known as the federal Controlled Substance Act? Answer: In our opinion...they can’t! As long as federal laws like the CSA, IRS Rule 280E and federal banking laws exist NO state can lawfully legalize something that is federally illegal! The federal governmental entities may NOT prosecute or pursue the states themselves but they’ve recently made it clear that they will go after organizations and individuals.

This sort of thinking is called the “sunk cost fallacy.” It’s a common cognitive bias—an error in reasoning— that leads us to keep investing in something simply because we’ve already invested so much. Behavioral economist Daniel Kahneman explains that even when we sense that investing

further is futile, we’re prone to do it because of how powerfully loss affects us. His research finds that we may even feel twice as much pain from a loss as we feel happiness from a gain. So, rather than take the hit to our ego by admitting we’ve wasted our time, we waste more time doing whatever wasted our time in the first place.

The rational (and misery-reducing) approach is recognizing that the time we’ve already put in is gone and that throwing more time in after it won’t change that. What makes sense is deciding what to do based on how likely it is to pay off in the future. In this case, sure, your boyfriend could have a neardeath experience, re-evaluate his life, and start texting you heart emojis every 20 minutes—and Elton John could divorce his husband and start dating women. Of course, if you do ditch this guy, your replacement dream man may not pop up immediately in his wake.

But at the very least, you should find that there are many men out there who can fail to meet your needs without your spending thousands of dollars a year on plane tickets.
