Sans Quentin Quentin Tarantino’s new movie, The Hateful Eight, sounds like a Red Hat Society meetup compared to the number of people currently peeved at the pulpy auteur. Following the director’s comments on cops murdering people at a protest last month in New York City, police unions across the country are calling for a boycott of his upcoming film, which is set for release Christmas Day. San Jose’s Police Officers Association (POA) joined the fray Tuesday, with president PAUL KELLY calling the director’s comments “hateful and repugnant” while also noting the sacrifice of officers like San Jose’s MICHAEL JOHNSON, who was killed in the line of duty in March.

JAMES GONZALES, the union’s vice president, said it was ironic that Tarantino would blast the same men and women who protect his First Amendment rights to free speech, even if they disagree. “I thought he was going to come out with an apology,” Gonzales said, noting that local law enforcement in San Jose has taken an open approach to dealing with community concerns while also implementing new de-escalation of force procedures. Gonzales also noted the recent firing of SJPD officer PHILLIP WHITE, who was canned as a result of threatening tweets he sent in response to the death of ERIC GARNER and the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

eau Goldie put on his straightest face last week and told the Santa Clara Valley Water District board that RMC Water and Environment has been a fine consultant. The CEO’s job has hung in the balance recently, with the board reportedly conducting multiple performance reviews in closed session, and yet Goldie has been particularly bullish.

The CEO has aggressively defended RMC’s work for the past six months, despite internal allegations of

improper billing by the company over the previous year and a half.

Metro has published several reports on the matter, touching on billing issues as well as questions surrounding Goldie’s decision not to divulge potential conflicts of interest with RMC: one of his deputies at the district, Melanie Richardson, is married to an RMC part-owner; and the firm was involved in a Monterey County corruption scandal.

None of these matters were disclosed this spring, when Goldie went to the board of directors for authorization to exclusively negotiate single-source agreements on a groundwater recycling plant, with RMC slated to receive the largest piece.

Despite Goldie and staff ’s reassurances at the Oct. 27 board

meeting that everything has been handled properly—chief financial officer Najon Chu reported not a single anomaly or irregularity in RMC invoices related to an East San Jose watershed project—the board referred the matter to its audit committee to take a closer look.

Metro had requested an interview with Goldie for nearly two months, and last Thursday the district consented on the condition it could video record the interview. An unusual request, spokesman Marty Grimes said the district wanted “to have an irrefutable, complete record of what is said.” The implication was that the CEO was concerned about being misquoted.

As it turns out, it’s the district that is now keeping the public from seeing a complete record of that conversation.

A little more than a half hour into the interview, Goldie was presented a document titled, “Written Notice of Recommended Disciplinary Action.”

In the internal memo, dated Nov. 29, 2010, Marc Klemencic, a now-retired chief operating officer, details more

since 2001, was promoted to a senior maintenance position in May 2011— just six months after Klemencic advised discipline for Fleming. Kristen O’Kane, a level II environmental planner at the time of the emails, was promoted to field operations unit manager in March 2012. Jennifer Castillo received a promotion—not in duties, but in title and pay only—from field operations to environmental services manager in April 2012.

‘Brief section removed due to confidential nature of the reporter’s question’ Goldie fumbled over an answer when asked if promotions were the proper response for people involved in sending emails that included pornography and racist/homophobic jokes. He then added that he didn’t think any of the emails should be “career-ending.”

Other current district employees who were involved in the email chain include: Jay Lee, a senior maintenance worker; Chad Grande, a recently promoted field operations unit manager; and Joseph Aguilera, a field operations administrator.

The district maintains that discipline was handed out, and it’s possible that some employees were merely recipients. But staffers who spoke under the condition of anonymity, out of fear of retaliation, say that Goldie has a list of allies he has built up over his 31 years with the district, and some of the people involved in the emails may have received preferential treatment in the process.

“It’s a sense of entitlement, like, ‘We’ve been here so long we’ve got our fingers wrapped around this whole agency,’” says a source. “It’s like nothing can happen to them and they feel like they own the place because they’ve been there so long.”

than a dozen inappropriate emails that civil engineer Lisa Fleming sent to other district staff members from 2007 to 2009.

The messages, which appear to have been shared by numerous district employees, “contained profanity and nudity and derogatory commentary re: disability, race, sexual orientation, and sexual connotation.” Some of the emails even made fun of rape.

Klemencic recommended a weeklong suspension and demotion for Fleming, but sources suggest she got off with a much lighter punishment.

District sources also say that Fleming was far from the only individual misusing her taxpayer-funded work email account.

Goldie refused to discuss the emails, calling them a “personnel matter,” and the district took the extraordinary step of redacting a five-minute portion of the video interview focusing on the inappropriate emails and the culture of the district. All that remains is a message that states: “Brief section removed due to confidential nature of reporter’s question.” Metro has challenged the district’s use of government exemptions to eliminate the entire discussion, but legal counsel Stan Yamamoto has yet to provide a response.

However, an audio recording of the interview, conducted with the district’s knowledge, features Goldie admitting that he managed many of the people who took part in the illicit email chain during his time as a deputy operating officer. According to records provided by the district, Goldie held that position from May 2004 until January 2009, when he took over as chief operating officer for five months before assuming the position of CEO. Goldie quickly became agitated by questions about the emails, wondering how they were relevant to an interview about RMC. When told they could provide insight into the culture of the district, he disagreed.

“I think the culture of the district is such that we have policies and followed them and when somebody violates them, we take action,” Goldie said.

Sources say some district employees were forced into early retirement and others may have even been terminated as a result of the emails, but at least three individuals included in Fleming’s email chain were promoted not long after Klemencic’s November 2010 discipline memo.

Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio wants to build on its success by creating a permanent cat café to encourage adoptions for the local animal shelter.

The proposal came up at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, but Mayor Sam Liccardo and Vice Mayor Rose Herrera knocked it back to the Rules and Open Government Committee. The discussion, they said, should start in a subcommittee before heading back to council. So there’s still a chance of it moving forward, just at a later date.

The Dancing Cat on East Julian Street started as a month-long popup shop, an experiment by Mary

Rubin and Ann Chasson to promote shelter adoptions and create a public gathering space for cat lovers.

For a cover charge, patrons could hang out in a living room-like lounge populated by a clowder of cats looking for a new home.

Over the past several months, there have been pet behavior workshops for adults, storytimes for kids and other community events. Feline-themed art decorates the bright, colorful space. People’s excitement for The Dancing Cat led proprietors to extend their lease on the converted liquor store for another several months through Nov. 15.

Cat cafés, which originally sprang up in Japan and Taiwan in the late ’90s, have become increasingly popular in the United States. The

Cat Town Café opened in Oakland last fall, followed by similar operations in San Francisco, San Diego and, this past May, San Jose.

Oliverio envisions a long-term, volunteer-staffed and city-sponsored version of The Dancing Cat as an extension of San Jose’s main Animal Care Services facility or another community center.

If no other funds are available, the councilman offered to use money from his District 6 office to pay for cat-related furniture and other amenities.

“The [café] would not only provide its community with a service that it would soon otherwise be without, but would also promote cat adoption,” Oliverio said. “[It would provide] homes for animals that may otherwise have none.”

An attorney who spent most of his career as a public safety watchdog in Los Angeles County will become San Jose’s next independent police auditor.

Walter Katz, 49, takes takes over Jan. 5 as the city’s fifth police auditor, the city announced Tuesday. The former public defender succeeds LaDoris Cordell, who stepped down this past summer after five years at the post.

“I’m honored and privileged to be appointed,” Katz said in a statement.

In his new role, Katz will review complaints against the San Jose Police Department and make recommendations on how to improve policy. Like his predecessor, Katz has written and spoken extensively about improving trust between law enforcement and the community—particularly for communities of color—by way of transparency and accountability.

“There is a phenomenon in the United States which most of the public is unwilling or unable to fully acknowledge,” he wrote in a column for the New York Times earlier this year. “The killings by police of unarmed black men and boys is akin to climate change—for many, seemingly no evidence will convince them that there is a relationship between race and police violence.”

RIGINAL SAN JOSE Earthquakes forward and Presentation High School soccer coach Manuel “Mani” Hernandez will join those inducted next week into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame. Established 20 years ago, the Hall honors those who have made extraordinary contributions in the sports world.

The inductees have either developed their skills in Santa Clara County,

played or coached for a county team or school, represented the county as an individual athlete, or contributed in some extraordinary fashion to the greater community in a sports-related context. The annual dinner and ceremony will unfold in the Shark Tank on Monday night.

In Mani’s case, he came to the Bay Area from Madrid as a teenager in the 1960s. He initially played soccer for the legendary coach Julius “Julie” Menendez at San Jose State College, as it was then called. After playing for the U.S. Olympic team in 1972, Hernandez joined the first incarnation of the San Jose Earthquakes for the club’s inaugural season in 1974, during which he scored the first goal in the history

of the entire club. Later, he taught high school Spanish and coached the Presentation High School girls’ soccer teams for a staggering 31 years, winning 17 league championships and eight Central Coast Section titles. Twelve of his players went on to play collegiate soccer, including U.S. women’s national team members Danielle Slaton and Aly Wagner. But none of it, he says, led him to expect anything like a hall of fame induction.

“I don’t think any coach really aspires to that,” Mani says. “We coach, kids graduate, they go, and you keep on going. You pay attention to the wins and losses to make you feel some kind of reward, then the kids go to college, so you feel some sort of reward too, but nothing like a hall of fame occurred in my mind. I was very surprised. It’s quite an honor.”

before enrolling at San Jose State.

After coming from Spain, where soccer verges on religion, he almost harbored second thoughts about emigrating.

The mass U.S. population did not seem to know the sport very well.

At San Jose State, however, Spartan coach Menendez was a local ambassador of the game—an expert, a teacher, a mentor and an overall father figure for many. So when he spotted Mani playing high school soccer, Menendez recruited him immediately.

In addition to coaching the Spartans, and eventually the U.S. Olympic team, Menendez was also the main person to spread the gospel of the game. He taught it to prospective high school coaches across Northern California, since it wasn’t yet in the curriculum.

When Mani started at San Jose State, Menendez often took Mani along to presentations in order to demonstrate basic skills. Mani was already learning to improve his game on the field, but now he was also reaping the rewards from watching Menendez pass the game on to others—a model Mani took with him when he started his own teaching career.

“He gave me a very good learning model,” Mani said. “At the time I didn’t realize it. I was just helping his demonstrations. But after a period of time, I began to think, ‘Wow, this is how you teach.’ So it was a great position for a young kid to be involved.”

When the original incarnation of the San Jose Earthquakes started in 1974, they became the city’s first-ever professional sports team, initially selling out Spartan Stadium over and over again. Menendez was instrumental in helping the new club get started. Mani joined the club and went on to score the first goal in the team’s history.

Now, at the ripe young age of 67, Mani still plays soccer on a recreational basis and will join several other legends in the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame.

Next week will also see the induction of track and field hero John Carlos, one of those enshrined on the statue at SJSU for his Black Power salute at the 1968 Olympics. Other inductees are former Niners quarterback Jeff Garcia and synchronized swimming coach Chris Carver.

A new exhibit at NUMU Los Gatos takes visitors back to a time when children roamed freely through fantastical landscapes

FEW WEEKS ago, Los Gatans heard a revolver’s sharp crack cut through the murmur of cars whizzing by on Highway 17. The shot came from a turn-of-thecentury Colt, fired just once by a man named Chuck Lowe.

The scene was orchestrated by Amy Long, history curator at the New Museum Los Gatos. It was a test, conducted in the hopes of

acquiring a permit to recreate a theatrical, Old West-style shootout on the opening day of the museum’s latest exhibit, “It Takes A Village”—a historical retrospective on three of the South Bay’s beloved and nowdefunct theme parks: San Jose’s Frontier Village and a pair of Scotts Valley attractions, Santa’s Village and Lost World.

Long’s initial plan was to have original Frontier Village gunfighters, including Lowe, engage in fake duels—blowing each other

away in the plaza, right out front of the museum and Los Gatos Library, exactly as they did 40 years ago at Frontier Village. But the report of Lowe’s pistol, which was loaded with blanks, alarmed too many residents living in NUMU’s vicinity and calls were placed to the Los Gatos Police Department, which put the kibosh on Long’s proposal.

Long isn’t worried, however. The

calls of concern over the gunshot have been far outpaced by enthusiastic correspondence for the exhibit, which opens Saturday.

“Hundreds of people are emailing me photos,” Long says. “I've been posting about this on social media for months, and I could tell you that I've never seen such a response from the general public over a show than this one.”

GOOD OLD DAYS It makes perfect sense that those who remember the heyday of Frontier Village would yearn for those good old days. These theme parks came about during a time characterized by skyrocketing consumerism, full-swing optimism and giddy tippytoe euphoria.

America had defeated the Nazis, triumphed over Japan and stood atop the world. The automobile era was here to stay and the American

d itself in tractDream manifested house subdivisions from coast to coast. The high standard of living, combined with the baby boom, meant that the ’50s would become a child-centric decade.

In an increasingly commercialized era, parents and grandparents spent more time and money on children than ever before. According to a text panel in the show, toy sales soared from $84 million in 1940 to $1.25 billion in the ’60s, resulting in a culture of creative play and

imagination. In the same way that children’s bo books provided alternate realities via pictures, Frontier Village, Santa’s Village and Lost World provided similar realities via sight, smell, sound and experience.

Even as more Americans were able to access the good life through an expanding middle class, communities were still tightly knit and homogeneous. The counterculture revolution—with its drugs and radical politics—had yet to blossom, and San Jose was still known as

The Valley of Heart’s Delight. The possibilities seemed endless and endlessly good. And that led to a certain style of parenting that seems foreign to many new parents.

According to NUMU Executive Director Lisa Coscino, children of her generation were often allowed to roam around theme parks, like Frontier Village, unaccompanied by adults for an entire day. “There wasn’t so much fear,” she says, and as a result, “children learned how

to solve their own problems when they were left alone—unlike with contemporary helicopter parenting.”

Today, Coscino says, the world is a much scarier place, and children stay indoors, playing video games and chatting on their handheld devices, expressing themselves with emojis instead of real emotions.

Coscino is disappointed that there will be no Mexican standoff outside of the museum. She’s also bummed that Lowe, who once worked as a “Marshal” at Frontier Village, will not be permitted to carry his sidearm—even unloaded—around the exhibit, as he does not have an open carry permit. However, she fully understands the department’s decision. In fact, Coscino is embracing the episode as a teachable moment.

“One of the things that it points to is kind of what this exhibit is talking about, really,” she says.

“Besides being a trip down memory lane, this exhibit is an investigation into childhood nostalgia and into mid-century lifestyle dynamics, versus what is happening right now.”

She points to a pair of old-west-style saloon doors, the swinging type, which will beckon visitors into the new exhibit, whose full title is: “It Takes a Village: A trip back in time to Frontier Village, Santa’s Village, and Lost World.”

“People will walk in through those doors,” Long says, explaining that the doors came from Shaughnessy McGehee’s backyard re-creation of Frontier Village.

As we tromp through the space, piles of artifacts in various stages of preparation surround us: original Frontier Village fence material, six-shooters, marshals badges, employee documents, maps, bicycle parts and a cactus. Sections of the exhibit will pay tribute to park characters Tumbleweed, Indian Jim and the Lost Dutchman Mine Ride.

“The Memory Wall” will enable former visitors and employees to scribble their recollections of

Frontier Village in chalk.

Summer Winds Nursery in Campbell supplied the bales of hay, but much of the bigger pieces of Frontier Village lore either came from McGehee’s backyard or the obsessive collection of Tim Stephens.

Countless other donors, inseparable from their own Frontier Village nostalgia, are relentlessly throwing in their two cents.

While Frontier Village comprises the bulk of the show, two other theme parks, Santa’s Village and Lost World, also receive their due. Both were located in Scotts Valley, just off Highway 17.

Long recently rescued a giant bear from a City of Scotts Valley storage depot. Originally from Lost World, the bear now sits in one corner of the exhibit, its paint flaking off from decades of neglect. Wayne Thompson, son of the couple that started Lost World, contributed a giant lion.

The Santa’s Village portion of the exhibit features a large wooden cutout of Santa Claus—not originally part of the park, but from the same era—and a hand-cranked rail car, made to look like a sled.

Coscino shakes her head in wonder at the tiny vehicle, which has no seat belt and is clearly built for a single child operator.

Today, the rickety contraption would cause an ambulance-chasing lawyer to salivate, but back in her day, this was par for the course at amusement parks, Coscino says.

THE ARCHITECT Frontier Village was the brainchild of Joe Zukin. Originally from Los Angeles, Zukin relocated to the South Bay in 1943 to attend business school at Stanford. By 1949, he was already demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit by opening one of San Jose’s first self-service gas stations, at the corner of Santa Clara and Montgomery, right about where the Shark Tank now sits. A few years later, he started opening car washes.

Both endeavors were new ideas at the time.

parties down south to see what the place looked like. The Happiest Place on Earth was only a primitive version of what it is today. However, at the time, the idea that an amusement park could be “family friendly” was quite novel. Prior to Disneyland, amusement parks were centered around carnival rides or seaside resorts. Generally speaking, these parks were geared toward young bachelors, served alcohol and were much seedier in nature—a far cry from the squeaky clean Magic Kingdom.

Zukin and his traveling companions—Mike Khourie, Hawley Smith and John Poole—were impressed. They wondered if they could duplicate Disney’s product in the Bay Area. While in Anaheim, the group grew especially fond of the Frontierland portion of the park and soon conspired to pool their resources around starting a brand new Western-style theme park.

“That was the germ of it,” Zukin

recalls. “From there, we raised money, found artists and applied for a permit to sell stock to the public.”

He and his team sold around $1 million of stock in 1959 and ’60.

Frontier Village was opened in 1961.

The late Laurie Hollings designed much of how the park actually appeared to guests. A Jack of all trades, Hollings brought many talents to the table. He was an illustrator, visual artist and engineer with experience designing movie sets and amusement park rides.

“I owe a lot of the park’s success to him,” Zukin says of Hollings, who passed away about a decade ago. “He had the feeling, he understood what people liked. He put things in the right place.”

Everything—from the park’s train station, to the trees and foliage lining the pathways, to the animals Hollings had roaming the grounds— all worked together to form a frontier fantasy land.

Wild West cliches and hoary stereotypes aside, Frontier Village

hit its mark. It was safe, clean and provided children a world of seemingly limitless possibility—pulling the worlds of Bonanza and Gunsmoke out of the TV and making them real.

Each microcosm within the park invited kids and their parents to bond over activities like trout fishing, canoe rides, archery and gaslight theater-type stage shows.

Celebrities made appearances: Lorne Greene, Bing Crosby and the Sweathogs from Welcome Back Kotter stopped by. Local radio stations held promotions—bringing the likes of Barbara Mandrell and Johnny Paycheck to the park. And Kodak provided free loaner cameras for those who forgot theirs at home.

Parking was free and Frontier Village would even stay open late if the park was busy at closing time.

“You could sit on a bench and just watch people,” says former Frontier Village employee Allen Weitzel, rattling off the options. “You could sit on a bench and eat and drink a

beer. You could also turn your kids loose and run around. The kids could ride anything they wanted to.

There were different ticket packages so everybody could fit their own budget. And gunfights. You couldn’t do those in today’s market.”

Most of all, everything came down to the employees. For nearly 20 years, Frontier Village implemented an elaborate, borderline-compulsive strategy of employee operations—a component many to this day claim was the reason for the park’s success.

Customer service was certainly at the top of the totem pole at Frontier Village. If a boy’s ice cream fell off the cone and onto the ground, an employee was right there to replace it for him. If a girl lost her balloon, she would get a new one. Visitors didn’t have to go a customer service desk and wait for the manager to come down and assess the issue.

No one had to wait through a frustrating phone tree before talking to a live human being.

The employee manuals were thorough, and included guidelines for personal grooming, customer interaction, uniform care, and even scripts for various characters and other positions at the park. Many of the Frontier Village staff adopted Wild West personae and took their work seriously. And yet, at the same time, it was all play. As a result, visitors felt safe, secure and clean. It was like stepping into a magazine ad.

Zukin took a hands-on approach with his employees—teaching them everything he knew about business.

Everyone was treated equally, as if part of a family. The park taught so many people about life itself. To this day, many former employees say the lessons they learned working under Zukin helped them become leaders in their respective adult professions.

“Joe handpicked a special management team and the core group stayed together for most of the park’s history,” Weitzel says.

“And a key element was that Joe took the egos out of park operation.

If someone had a good idea, we embraced it, even if the idea came from a newly hired ride operator.

No other department or person was more important than another.

And the guests picked up on that ambiance.”

As a result, especially in the early years, Frontier Village became one

MEMORY LANE When Long set out to curate this show, she had no idea what she was getting into.

To this day, thousands of people seem to harbor an intense emotional attachment to all things Frontier Village. Each year, a reunion with the tongue-in-cheek fervor of a Civil War reenactment takes place. The “Remembering Frontier Village” Facebook page boasts more than 12,000 members. And Weitzel claims that 200-plus individuals met their spouses while working at the park.

“What started out as something I thought would be a really fun, kind of kitschy, pop-culture exhibit, has actually been an insane Pandora's box of much greater depth—in terms of people’s attachment, collective memory and nostalgia,” Long says.

As Long continues talking, she takes on the tone of someone in disbelief. Her voice rising, she recalls attending one of the Frontier Village reunion picnics. “There were probably more people at that picnic than my high school reunion,” she says. “These people worked there 35 or 40 years ago and they’re still friends. People have saved all these items. They’re collectors. Everybody’s saved their scrapbooks and all their photos. They have their uniforms.

They have their pins. They have everything.”

To understand why these three parks were so important to so many people, it is helpful to understand the context in which they emerged.

Frontier Village, Santa’s Village and Lost World are just a few of the myriad theme parks which sprouted all over the country in the decades following World War II. All of these parks played a major role in redefining the childhood experience in America, according to

Amanda Tewes, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Tewes is researching the intersection of history and memory in the context of California. In particular, she’s interested in theme parks.

“This was the postwar world,” Tewes says. “The era was really important for car culture and finding family entertainment.”

The life of Frontier Village—from 1961-1980—bookended a unique era in the South Bay. During those years, San Jose’s population grew from around 200,000 to 600,000, and yet, as Tewes notes, a small town feel endured.

LOST BUT NOT FORGOTTEN As the excitement over “It Takes a Village” continues to mount, some are convinced that the memories of Frontier Village will live on in perpetuity.

Says Weitzel: “I worked in the amusement industry for 45 years, my brother for 49 years, and managed at several parks, consulted for many more, and the only park anyone ever wants to talk to us about is Frontier Village.”

Others claim it’s just plain old nostalgia. If the park were still open, no one would need to remember it so fondly. And if happy childhoods really did exist at one time, then why not celebrate?

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that because the park is closed, it has such a fond following,” Tewes says. “I think, 35 years on, people are able to reconnect with their childhood by remembering Frontier Village at that time, which connects to San Jose at that time, which connects to their lives at that time, and all those pleasant memories combined create a really strong sense of a really wonderful place to be. And a wonderful childhood.”

Whatever the case, Long is sure of one thing: those who had any kind of connection to these theme parks in the past are positively psyched about “It Takes a Village.”

“Anytime I mention Frontier Village or Santa's Village, everybody gets excited,” she says. “Everybody's eyes get big. They get all excited and say, ‘I can't wait to see it. I can't wait to see it.’”

S THE weather cools, craft brewers trade crisp, light warm-weather styles for the boozier, spiced and malty beers of autumn. The popularity of wet hops, pumpkinspice everything and Oktoberfest brews has made fall the season en vogue for limited-release brews.

Brown Shugga, a hop-heavy strong ale by Petaluma’s Lagunitas. BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red by San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing. Ale of the Hermit and bourbon barrel-aged Ryetopia by San Jose’s Hermitage Brewing Company.

Winter Camp ale by Strike, another San Jose craft brewer. Pumpkin Sour—a tart, tangy twist on conventional fall flavors—brewed in San Jose by the farmto-table artisans of Almanac.

“Think of it as our ‘anti-pumpkin’ pumpkin beer,” Almanac brewmaster Jesse Friedman explains. “A pumpkin that evokes the fall flavors without any of the cliches attached to the usual squash seasonals.”

San Jose’s big-daddy brewer, Gordon Biersch, announced this week that it’s bringing back a seasonal favorite. The classic dark and full-bodied WinterBock ($8.99 to $9.99 per six-pack, 7.5 percent ABV) will sell through January, when the novelty of late-year seasonal brews wears off anyway.

True to Gordon Biersch tradition, WinterBock adheres to a German purity law called Reinheitsgebot. The decree, which dates back to 1516, limits the recipe to four ingredients—water, hops, yeast and malt.

Though made up of just four basic ingredients, WinterBock blends five types of malts: Munich, pilsner, black and two variations of caramel. Mahogany hued with a bready aroma, it pours out a creamy, light tan head.

Hungry monks in 11th century Bavaria invented bock to curb their hunger during fasts. By brewing it thick, caloric and nutrient-dense, they could circumvent the agony of abstaining from food during Lent and other religious observances. The result, of course, is that bocks have become associated with the holidays and are heavier than most brews.

Gordon Biersch founder Dan Gordon calls the monastic meal replacement one of the greatest loopholes of all time, a clever, if not slightly heretical, workaround of church-imposed piety.

“We take pride in continuing the ‘meal in a glass’ tradition that monastery breweries began 10 centuries ago when they figured out that a strong, dark beer would fulfill their bread and water diet,” said Gordon, a San Jose native who studied brewing in Germany. “It’s easy to see how fasting on a 7.5 percent ABV beer would take your mind off the hunger pangs.”—Jennifer Wadsworth

OM, PRONOUNCED like home, the new fast casual Korean eatery on Santa Clara Street, occupies a cozy shotgun-style space squeezed between Dive Bar and Muchos Taqueria. Like other fast casual spots, the restaurant takes clear inspiration from Chipotle, from its fixed-up fresh food down to the clean lines and blonde wood interior.

Every dish starts out with a bed of white rice, mixed grain ($0.75 extra), toasted rice ($1.25 extra) or salad ($1.25 extra). Then the protein: tofu, barbecue chicken, firecracker pork, braised short ribs, Korean steak or just the three veggie side dishes that all orders come with.

The side dishes, or banchan, are where Hom really shines. Between three of us, we ordered the Korean steak with mushrooms, kimchi and broccoli ($9.25); the firecracker pork with spinach, kimchi and carrots ($7.50); and the barbecue chicken with zucchini, bean sprouts and spinach ($7.25).

The veggies are served cooked, but cold, over the hot rice and meat, all packaged food-truck-style in one to-go container. Mixing in well with the rice, the salty carrots and garlicky spinach paired nicely with the kimchi, which was flavorful without being overpowering. I definitely snuck back across the table for more of my friend’s deliciously nutty bean sprouts. Everything in the box benefitted from a generous helping of the homemade spicy chili sauce which, like the other spicy items on the menu, is very mild.

We sat at the large communal table dominating the center of the restaurant, centerpieced with some hip terrariums; bar seating runs along the white-tiled walls and into two window corners in the front of the shop.

From any vantage, it’s easy to see the meat fired up fresh right behind the counter. The two guys working frantically threw together boxes for the dinner rush, but the vibe in the restaurant remained relaxed, with chilledout electronica playing from portable speakers above the soda machine.

Hom makes its own ginger ale ($2.95) as well—definitely worth a try if your only experience is Canada Dry. Theirs is mellow and herbal.

Hom’s hours—open til 2:30am Fridays and Saturdays—will make it a welcome addition to downtown’s late-night offerings. Is it the Chipotle of Korean food? Maybe. As for how authentic Hom is, I’ll leave that to more qualified critics. But for less than $30, three people walked out satisfied, with a little left over. — Stephen Layton

Vocalist Kyle Ball's guttural commands are generally unintelligible, but when he screams, “Burn it all and watch it fall!” you get a sense of the general attitude behind the band. Due to the proliferation of personal video game consoles in the ’80s and ’90s, many tinny 8-, 16- and 64-bit melodies from classic games are lodged deep into the cultural subconscious of the millennial generation. The Super Soul Bros. base their jazz-funk fusion on these looping riffs, taking them far beyond their crudely rendered original locales. Local keyboardist Robbie Benson and accomplished guitarist Brian Sheu co-lead the band through boisterous instrumentals that will chew on a theme like “Chemical Plant Zone” from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for 10-plus minutes, giving space for warbly organ, peppy sax and blistering electric guitar. Koeb’s drawings and paintings reflect a wide array of disparate influences: the chaotic orders of Willem de Kooning, the cadaverous palettes of Francis Bacon and the apocalyptic washes of Ralph Steadman. In this solo exhibition, Koeb presents a series of monotypes which explore his interest in “the relationship between what we see on the surface and what lies beneath.” (JE)

She populates her canvases with isolated figures who exhibit the same quality of sadness as Margaret Keane’s forlorn waifs and strays. This Juilliard-trained pair ofidentical twins blow adeptly on the clarinet, flute and all registers of saxophone, twisting standards from the classic American songbook. They weave in and out of each other with an unreplicable genetic synergy and ride only the jaunty rhythms of their jazz guitarist, Alex Wintz. Their renditions bounce with a joy, freshness and warmth that maintains the authenticity of original recordings without resorting to stuffy mimicry, flipping between head-spinning finger work and tenderly lingering on particularly poignant progressions.

They’re advancing jazz as much as they’re keeping it alive. (JF)

Long Beach has birthed an eclectic mix of talent over the years, ranging from T.S.O.L. to Snoop Dogg. Area natives Crooked Captain add what they call “passive-aggressive hardcore” to its lineage. It makes sense given frontman Ryan Morrison's alternatingly screaming and singtalking vocals that sarcastically touch on topics ranging from self-realization to abandonment. Their songs are charming in their simplicity, with minimalist lyrics, like “hate me/love me/do something,” spread across spacey, wavering guitars and trudging drumbeats that might appeal to dreampop fans looking for something with a blunter edge, or hardcore fans looking for something a bit softer. He splices hot bars with melty auto-tune harmonies over trappy, heavy-stepping beats. A talented musician, his skill on the bass guitar, keyboard and drum machine inform his hedonistic anthems about getting cross-faded and jacking your girlfriend. He came to fame by producing and writing YG’s crackly and infectious banger, “Toot It and Boot It.” Since then, he’s collaborated with Future and Rae Sremmurd on the zig-zagging club hit “Blasé” and with DJ Mustard and Wiz Khalifa on the bedspring-sampling ode to pushing the limits of freakiness, “Or Nah.” (JF)

On Thursday, the latest iteration of this group—The Official Blues Brothers Revue—comes to Campbell’s Heritage Theatre, for a one-night performance.

The band will be led by Wayne Catania (Jake) and Kieron Lafferty (Elwood)— each of whom were hand-picked by Aykroyd, Judy Belushi (John’s widow) and Paul Shaffer, the show’s musical director. The two leads will be backed by the Intercontinental Rhythm and Blues Band.

According to David Budge, the tour’s publicist, the show picks up right where the ďŹ lm leaves off, without ever missing a beat. Even Catania, the man playing Jake Blues, bears an uncanny resemblance to John Belushi. “It’s so spot-on, it’s scary,â€? Budge says.

The revue covers all the classics from the ďŹ lm, including “Soul Man,â€? “Rubber Biscuit,â€? “Sweet Home Chicago,â€? “Gimme Some Lovin,â€? and even “Rawhide.â€? “They are doing an encyclopedia of American roots music, which embraces blues, rock, soul, and even country & western,â€? Budge says.

As to why the Blues Brothers have such staying power nearly 40 years after they made their original SNL debut, Budge says it is because the music connects with just about everybody—no matter how young or how old. “It’s not a generational thing—it’s a multi-generational thing,� he says.

T MUST BE very tough to finance a movie in 2015 about a character who is known as “Failure Face.” So one makes allowances for The Peanuts Movie, for its frequent stops and starts and its upbeat ending. If there is maybe too much blockbustery Great War aerial action from Snoopy’s reveries, it’s very likable, often poignant, and, ultimately, protective of the delicate comic strip from which it was sourced.

This movie has a model, and it follows it: the still-watched TV specials starring Charlie Brown, produced

by Burlingame’s Lee Mendelson—a Stanford creative writing grad and KPIX veteran, who set up his studio on the Peninsula. The score reuses some compositions by Vince Guaraldi, the jazz pianist who played his last set in 1976 at Butterfields nightclub on El Camino Real in Menlo Park. The Schulz signature is on the title and the end card, since the descendants of Charles Schulz were involved with the production. The 3D animation preserves the look of the characters, but the new animation gives them a warm, translucent peach-like glow.

Who can count the number of shy, strange and clumsy children that

Charlie Brown solaced? He lived out Kafka’s comment, “In the battle between you and the world, back the world.” For years, as he appeared in one four-paneled cartoon after another, I hung upon his multiple failures in every field in which a boychild is supposed to excel, from kite flying to sports.

Even if The Peanuts Movie’s director, Steve Martino, made Ice Age, it seems more of a vintage cartoon—free of contemporization and referential gags.

The gang is kept in a kind of early 1960s Neverland, the sort of suburb that doesn’t much exist anymore— one poignancy for someone in my industry was a scene of Charlie Brown taking a huge stack of daily newspapers to the bin for recycling.

A key scene takes place at a public library, strangely not packed with kids at computers.

in his school when he gets 100 points on a standardized test. This seemed strange, because it’s hard to imagine a school in which a really smart kid is also popular. The august Lucy Van Pelt, put in this world to remind Charlie of his insignificance, is shocked by the boy’s new status: “This is not easy for me! My whole world is turned upside down.”

The Lucy-Charlie relationship is as thorny as ever—he actually pays her a nickel to insult him, and her infernal glee at the still-hilarious trick with the football allows us, as always, the covert fun of imagining being a bully. The other characters are as you left them.

There isn’t enough of the erudite Linus—who will no doubt grow up to be in the clergy, or become an academic—but plenty of the far more proactive Peppermint Patty (voiced

by Venus Schultheis). She accurately represents those exuberant girls who become even more fun when they grow up. Too bad the poor, roundheaded “Chuck” resists Patty. She could really wise him up.

And if the flying doghouse gets all the benefit of CG enhancement, the animators really win with Snoopy (voiced by loops of the late Bill Melendez with the same lunatic cackle the dog had on TV). Snoopy provides the pre-verbal humor, living out his fantasies as novelist, dance instructor and devil dog of World War I. He flies with the help of a hangar crew of Woodstock’s fellow goldfinches, arranged like winged versions of those ever-popular yellow Minions.

Since the film takes place over the course of a school year, The Peanuts Movie has a narrative thread—with a long winter giving way suddenly to late spring. The thaw witnesses Charlie Brown winning, instead of leaving him where he belongs, losing in hope of a later win.We realize that any of his victories are just there to set up more chagrin, and we realize that his spots of good luck are concessions to the age of the participation trophy... but in this version Charlie Brown even gets to talk with the Little Red Haired Girl—it’s like making a film in which Gatsby and Daisy get together in the end.

Now Playing CALL HER SAVAGE/BACHELOR’S AFFAIRS (1932) Beginning a 30-plus film retrospective of Fox Studios between 1915-35, a pre-Thanksgiving cornucopia of transitional sound films, Pre-Code melos, rarely screened silents, key early Westerns, comedies and the masterpieces of Frank Borzage and F.W. Murnau. Call Her Savage has a catfight between a sex symbol on her way down (Clara Bow) and one on her way up (Thelma Todd).

But that’s not all the scandal in this lusty melodrama about a Texas heiress (Bow) whose misbehavior earns her the nickname “Dynamite.” (It’s not her fault—hereditary taint, a hot topic of the day, is the cause of her hot blood.)

Bow, in real life recovered from scandal and nervous breakdown, plays the most bipolar manic pixie you may ever see. It’s famous in the queer history of cinema books for its quick observation of a couple of gay singing waiters at a Greenwich Village café, but it also it has the kind of plot you love to retell, full of quotable lines, such as Todd’s words to a departing boyfriend: “You’ll come back. I understand your little peculiarities.” BILLED WITH Bachelor’s Affairs. Marry in haste, repent at leisure: in this comedy, Adolphe Menjou is a millionaire who is hitched up to a half-brained fortune hunter, and now he has to find a way out.

NASTY BABY Kristen Wiig dons the starved-hawk look of the frazzled New Yorkeress with a biological clock going off.

Wiig’s Polly is the pal of a pair of gay lovers—Freddy (director/writer Sebastian Silva) and his boyfriend Mo (Tunde Adebimpe)—who want her to mother their child. Mo is less certain, but he has the more powerful seed. The two men quietly continue to gentrify Brooklyn one houseplant at a time; Freddy works on his inane performance/video piece in which he does the adult big-baby thing, rolling and wailing on a blanket on the floor. Perhaps this infantile behavior mirrors the way three selfish nouveau Brooklynites are trying to get it together. It may be that this semiimprovisational film was pulled in a different direction by the force of two wacky neighbors. One is the underrated Mark Margolis (lately, the blind seer slaughtered by the adolescent Joker on Gotham) who is a piss-elegant vintage homosexual, formerly known as “the Mayor of Adelphi Street.” The other is a crazy, menacing street character called The Bishop (Reg E. Cathey) who loathes gay people. Wiig, terrific as always, has her own sharp angles on this material—handling a sperm sample, she says, quietly, “It’s warm ….” There is nothing like a director who gives a cast room to move, which is why Silva’s Crystal Fairy is still one of the best movies about a hippie (even if it’s a hippie practicing that craftless

craft in the 2010s). As a director, this Chilean is a bit of a hippie. Nasty Baby dissolves while you’re watching it, but it certainly has scenes worth keeping in the memory. (RvB)

SUFFRAGETTE A seriously glum movie about brick-throwing radicals, and it worries over revolutionary exuberance. In 1912, the leader of the votes-for-women movement, Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep, in essentially a one-scene part) argued that attacks on “the golden idol of property” would get the suffrage movement some attention.

Unfortunately, the British director Sarah Gavron lives in a nation whose capital has had a series of Kristallnachts in recent years, and she seems to get little pleasure in the sound of breaking glass. We follow the political consciousnessraising of a fictional industrial laundress, Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), who is thrown out by her husband (Ben Whishaw) after she is swept up in a police riot and given a week in jail. Homeless, Maud turns to her other suffragettes.

She becomes closer friends with her co-worker from the laundry, the wiry Violet (Anne-Marie Duff) and a determined but sickly female pharmacist, Edith (Helena Bonham Carter). While focusing on the actual battlefront, instead of Pankhurst’s generalship, this movie gets caught in the trenches: it’s a dim study of martyrdom and sacrifice. (RvB)

Lavish, but a lesson in the importance of portion control.

Director Guillermo del Toro’s tribute to the English macabre cinema is so worshipful that he even names his captive girl Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) … as in Peter Cushing, icon of Hammer Films. The haunted but lovely daughter of a master builder in Buffalo in the 1890s, Edith longs to be a writer. And when a slim, black-clad baronet named Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) arrives to cause a social sensation, Edith wants to marry him. Once the film starts simmering, it loses something. Hiddleston is as Gothic as a Tim Burton illustration come to life, but he has to stand back and take care of other business as Edith pines and sickens, and the ghosts appear. The film makes you smile like a jack o’lantern for the traditions respected; Del Toro has taste and yet knows how to twist a knife. (RvB)

Orchestral folk group L’Anarchiste find inspiration in open spaces

ROWING UP in Utah’s Salt Lake Valley, songwriter Rob LeCheminant found himself inspired by the natural wonders surrounding him.

“Having been so close to areas like Canyonlands, Arches, the Grand Canyon, etcetera, has definitely affected my focus on sound and lyrics,” says the man whose most recent record, Giant, which he recorded under the moniker, L’Anarchiste, includes songs titled “Wolves,” “Nautilus” and “Sparrows.”

“I love nature metaphors or even literally writing about nature,

and that's a direct result of being fortunate enough to have grown up spending lots of time in those areas,” he says. In school he was exposed to classical and jazz music and took up the trumpet. He dreamed of becoming a soundtrack composer, then found he enjoyed writing folk and rock songs as well. All these influences and affinities combine to form the rich, eclectic tapestry of sound that is Giant.

Befitting his soundtrack aspirations, there is a cinematic quality to the new album. The intricate songs on Giant are epic in scope, with densely layered textures. LeCheminant, on vocals, guitar, trumpet and banjo (among other instruments), is

joined by Alex Gilvarry on bass and keyboards; Bryan Hull on guitars and keyboards; Richie Gailey, on drums and percussion; and Devon Wooley on trombone, trumpet, melodica and keyboards. The resulting blend is an unusual mix of traditional instruments and modern sensibilities, with songs offering the listener unexpected twists and surprising tangents, synthesizers and autotune co-existing with banjos and horns.

The album’s title is shared by one of the tracks, but LeCheminant says there’s more to it than that. “I like to think of the title Giant as referring to the concept of small things—be it actions, events, ideas—having the potential to have great effect, if that makes any sense,” he says.

One of the album’s highlights is “Wolves,” which begins as a delicate, folky tune, tosses in some unanticipated auto-tuned vocals, then becomes lively and colorful, with syncopated percussion and a triumphant horn line.

“While I was writing it, the music went in a direction that I absolutely did not expect, but I love how it turned out,” he says. “I always thought it was going to be a slow, quiet song, but as I was writing, I just followed my gut instinct and that ’70s-western-inspired ending was what happened, which was superfun to record.”

The words deal with fear of the unknown, and the struggle for honest and genuine communication.

“The lyrics are about my inability to say what's truly on my mind and how difficult it is to say to the people who matter the most to me,” he says. Those people include his wife, a kindergarten teacher with whom he lives on a Navajo reservation.

Another song, “Gamelan,” addresses the importance of human connection, with lyrics written at a time when LeCheminant was confused about his life’s direction.

“I was so dissatisfied with my job, with schooling, and really feeling stopped in my progress, so I sat down and started writing a poem in the way that I knew best,” he says.

“It was actually a song I sat on for years until the lyrics happened and I suddenly knew what to do with it.”

The haunting “Sparrows” sounds like an old-time Appalachian murder ballad crossing paths with a disco beat, reminiscent of the Talking Heads album, Remain in Light.

L’Anarchiste’s big, orchestral sound also begs comparisons to Arcade Fire, but LeCheminant says it is Sufjan Stevens he would most like to collaborate or share a bill with.

“He has affected me and my writing more than any other artist, I'd say.”

Though on the recording the vocal tracks are at times distant—another layer in the ambient soundscape—and the overall tone can come across as polished and cool, LeCheminant says audiences can expect “a surprising amount of emotion” from L’Anarchiste’s live performance. “We also balance a juggling act of instruments that we all switch around on,” he says, “which makes it fun and interesting for us and hopefully the audience as well.”

CONFIDENCE At 60, Jeff Daniels is comfortable with who he is—as a musician and an actor.

Knowing He Can WHEN JEFF DANIELS takes the stage at The Carriage House Theatre this Thursday, in front of a sold-out crowd, he anticipates he’ll be quite relaxed. The actor and musician says it’s much easier for him to face a live audience and blaring stage lights than it is to face a gathering of grips, producers and the heat of soundstage lighting. “I have less at stake when I walk out with a guitar than when I step out in front of a camera,� he says. “I enjoy it.�

It makes sense. In recent years, Daniels has taken on increasingly serious and heady roles—both on the silver screen and for television.

Until recently, Daniels’ best-known role may have been that of Harry Dunne, the dense sidekick to Jim Carrey’s even denser Lloyd Christmas, in the 1994 slapstick comedy Dumb & Dumber.

These days, however, Daniels is known for his role as Will McAvoy, the cable news anchor who in Aaron Sorkin’s HBO drama The Newsroom delivered a now-viral diatribe on why America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.

More recently, Daniels played NASA’s director, Teddy Sanders, in the box office-smashing, sci-ďŹ ďŹ lm, The Martian, as well as former Apple CEO John Sculley in the Michael Fassbenderstarring Steve Jobs.

These kinds of performances are demanding, he says. But getting up on stage, with his acoustic guitar and his son’s band—the Ben Daniels Band—is “a welcome relief.� “The music is Jeff Daniels more personal,� he says. “It’s Thu, 7:30pm more me. I’m not Carriage House playing a character.

Theatre I can take it anywhere I want to take it. I enjoy that creative freedom.

That’s not there with acting.�

At 60, the veteran actor, says he knows who he is—more than ever before. But even so, and even though he’s been playing guitar since 1976, he says he is still discovering he is capable of new and exciting things.

For example, Daniels says he used to feel like he had to be funny in order to connect with a crowd.

But with his latest album, Days Like These, he says he doesn’t feel that need anymore.

His impassioned speech on The Newsroom also taught him something, which he documented on the song “Now You Know You Can,� a song about not knowing exactly where the road ahead is leading, but understanding that things are going to be all right. —Nick Veronin

Tales from your PTSD support group: THEM: “I was held captive with a burlap bag over my head and beaten with electrical cords.”

YOU: “I’m right there with you, bro. This dude I was dating told me his Ferrari was paid for, and it turned out to be leased!”

YOU: “My boyfriend pretended he was buying a mansion, but he really lives with his parents.”

THEM: “That’s terrible. Can you help me put on my prosthetic leg?”

Sure, according to Pat Benatar, “love is a battlefield.” But spending three months fighting with a sociopathic boyfriend doesn’t leave you ducking for cover whenever a car backfires like a guy who did three tours of IED disposal in Iraq and came home with most of the parts he went in with. Ofer Zur, a psychologist who specializes in treating post-traumatic stress disorder, explains, “To meet the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, the stressor experienced must involve actual or threatened death or serious injury.”

What you did experience is called “gaslighting,” a covert form of psychological bullying that leaves you doubting your perception of reality and, eventually, accepting the bully’s distorted, self-serving version. So, for example, when you question your partner on something—like their work, education, or finances—instead of doing the civilized, healthy-person thing and giving you an answer, they blast you for daring to insult them by asking. (People who are cheating will often do this.) Day after day, as they treat you like you’re nuts, blind, or dumb, your self-worth erodes and you feel less and less able to trust your judgment.

The thing is, gaslighting isn’t like an alien spaceship with a giant vacuum hose, sucking in any person in its path. It’s the need for outside validation that makes a person susceptible, explains psychologist Robin Stern in “The Gaslight Effect.”

Another risk factor is an overvaluing of romantic love—seeing it as a magical eraser for life’s problems and a way to duck

out of the grubby work of developing a self. Believing the unbelievable is the price of maintaining a relationship that seems “more intense, more glamorous, and more special.” This is basically selling yourself out for love—though all you really have is a snake charmer and a snake.

To your credit, you had a strong enough self that you eventually crawled up through the romantic cloud cover and did some late-night Internet snakehunting. Though you’ve given your reptile the boot (or perhaps upcycled him into a handbag), your fear of being scammed again has you going all Inspector Javert on every slightly shiftyeyed co-worker. Consider that you’re reacting to the romantic con job as if it happened randomly, like a roast chicken falling out of a private jet and cracking you on the head. To stop wildly flinging suspicion around, accept responsibility: Admit that you got duped because you wanted to believe more than you wanted to see.

Granted, it isn’t always easy to identify the liars. (You can’t just keep an eye out for those telltale pants on fire.) Stern, however, offers good advice to avoid getting taken in by gaslighters and other pathologically inventive hustlers.

Instead of debating them on whether a particular piece of information is right or wrong, focus on your feelings. Ask yourself: “Do I like being treated this way … talked to this way?”

And though you don’t have PTSD, you might take a page out of Zur’s playbook—his notion that we heal from bad experiences by creating a narrative that gives them meaning for the future.

You, for example, could use this experience as a giant Post-it note reminding you to take a relationship slowly, meet a person’s circle of friends, and see who they are over time—instead of immediately declaring that you’ve found the love of the century. If you’re going to have a fairy tale relationship, it shouldn’t be because little or nothing in it exists in real life.
