Sausage Is Gross The sausage-making process of political reporting is rarely clean and often requires unsatisfying, unreported compromises.

For this reason, mainstream media outlets rarely allow readers and viewers to step into the kitchen and see the guts. So, in steps Fly. Last month, the San Jose Mercury News had what it thought was a juicy story of influence peddling by first-year San Jose Mayor SAM LICCARDO. City Hall reporter RAMONA GIWARGIS, also new to her job, had an email from a mayoral staffer suggesting his office drafted an op-ed for a local taxi driver to submit to the Merc for publication.

The piece was written as a response to a previous op-ed trashing the mayor’s idea to have drivers for Uber and Lyft go through a fingerprinting program, similar to standard taxis. Liccardo told Giwargis he didn’t know who wrote the letter—he couldn’t even rule himself out—and the Merc decided to go with the story despite the They mayor’s objections. But Did in the rush to make What? print deadline—an absurdly early 2pm for SEND TIPS TO O some stories—the FLY@ METRONEWS. WS. WS S.. truth came out right COM after the story was sent to press. It turns out a PR firm drafted the letter for Yellow Cab owner LARRY SILVA, who then gave it to the mayor’s office, which did no revisions before passing it on to a cabbie.

The Merc wrote a correction of sorts casting blame on the mayor’s office, but a follow-up article muddied the waters by raising new questions. Why Liccardo and his office were involved in the first place is a question no one seems keen on answering, but internal emails show the mayor and his top staffers—chief of staff JIM REED, RAGAN HENNINGER and AHMAD CHAPMAN—spent a good chunk of time on the issue. Particularly sensitive to media criticism, Liccardo now records his side of phone conversations with media, or at least with Giwargis, to make sure his quotes come out the way he remembers.

Gov. Jerry Brown signs sweeping new medical marijuana laws

WO DECADES after California sanctioned marijuana as medicine and a year out from possibly outright legalization, Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday approved a plan to regulate the world’s largest cannabis industry.

Spurred by the threat of a ballot initiative to make California the fifth state allowing general adult use, the Legislature introduced a trio of bills endorsed by law enforcement, the cannabis industry, labor unions and local governments. The triple-joined AB 243, AB 266 and SB 643—if one passed they all passed—marked the first time state lawmakers effectuated a pot policy since SB 420 in 2003 let patients and caregivers form collectives.

The sweeping package signed into

law just before Sunday’s deadline will transform California’s billion-dollar medical pot sector with a complex system of testing and licensing. For the first time, the industry, until now limited to nonprofit co-ops, can legally turn a profit. A new Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation run by a governor-appointed “weed czar” will oversee everything from growth to production, transport and sale.

“This gives us enormous momentum,” says Dale Sky Jones, who leads the ReformCA initiative, a measure expected to rally some of the biggest pro-pot players. “We can finally start to undo some of the damage brought upon us by the prohibition.”

But for the immediate future, at least, not much will change.

Many of the just-signed state rules won’t come into effect until 2018, and the details have yet to be crafted.

They largely reaffirm local control and grandfather in existing ordinances.

Since the state’s Compassionate Use Act legalized medical pot in 1996,

the industry has been governed by a patchwork of local rules while remaining illegal under federal law. Following the passage of SB 420 in the early aughts, dispensaries and grows proliferated as cities and counties struggled to maintain order and oversight.

Now, with unprecedented guidance from on high, some cities may rethink their bans, while the ones that allow them under strict limitations will have to decide whether to tweak local rules in reaction to the state’s inaugural marijuana bureaucracy. San Jose, the only South Bay city to permit pot clubs, may revise some of its yearold ordinance. Santa Clara County, which enacted a regional policy earlier this month, expects to make only minor adjustments to mesh with the state’s incipient pot policy.

“Fortunately, our ordinance already falls in line with what the state’s doing,” says Sylvia Gallegos, a deputy county executive who helped author the regional policy. “We’re already moving in the right direction.”

San Jose, for its part, enacted a regulatory framework in 2014—a few years after voters tossed out a prior ordinance by referendum—that bans pot shops from all but 1 percent of the

inevitability now that Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis, says Lauren Vasquez, spokeswoman for the Marijuana Policy Project and cofounder of the Silicon Valley chapter of Americans for Safe Access. “Voters are ready for this,” she says. “We just need to give them a measure that’s well thought-out and well drafted.”

A spring survey by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found that 56 percent of likely voters support legalizing marijuana for general use.

It’s a narrow margin, but a tick up from the split poll when the issue last came to voters five years before. But success at the ballot, according to PPIC analyst Dean Bonner, will require proponents to make inroads among Latinos, Republicans and older voters.

Given the range of support for the state’s new medical pot regulations—they drew endorsements from Democrats and Republicans, police and pot lobbyists—legalization has been recast as a bipartisan issue.

There’s also greater depth to the conversation compared to the failed legalization push in 2010, Jones adds.

Proponents are talking about how to build an industry that welcomes women, minorities and non-violent felons—the ones who bear the brunt of the prohibition but have been shut out under the state’s plan.

“This has always been about civil and social justice and how the War on Drugs disproportionately hurts our communities of color,” says Jones, president of Oaksterdam University, the nation’s first cannabis college. “But the conversation in past years has placed more emphasis on taxation, thinking that the public would be more interested in the money angle.”

Just as the Great Depression hastened the end of the alcohol prohibition, Prop. 19 in 2010 unsuccessfully tried to leverage the opportunity created by a global recession that emptied state coffers by marketing legalization as a way to rake in more revenue. Heading into 2016, Jones says, the message has evolved.

“Thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement and a federal push for criminal justice reforms, the public is more informed about social inequities,” Jones says. “It adds weight to the conversation.”

city. The number of collectives has since dropped from 78 to 20 still vying for the city’s blessing. Five disqualified clubs have sued over the restrictions; others were slapped with massive fines.

While the state will uphold local law, its new guidelines appear to contradict a provision in San Jose’s ordinance requiring collectives to grow and make all their own products. To comply with the city, many dispensary owners teamed up with other operators and investors and shelled out hundreds of thousands of dollars this past year to move into facilities with commercial kitchens and enough space for an on-site farm. That closedloop model—or vertical integration, in bureaucratic parlance—was meant to make it easier to regulate the plant from seed to sale in the absence of state oversight.

“That was a bad piece of legislation,” says John Lee, who lobbied against the city ordinance and has now channeled his energy into a grassroots initiative called the Marijuana Control, Legalization and Revenue Act of 2016, which would reset municipal regulations. “It’s prohibitively expensive to comply.”

Under state policy, a collective up and running by this year can continue as is. Although, statewide licensure will eventually limit on the number of large cultivation ops—the only kind San Jose allows.Meanwhile, with a raft of legalization initiatives jockeying for space on the 2016 ballot, policymakers will have to consider how to lay the groundwork for a future recreational market.

“We wrote our measure to complement what came out of the Legislature,” Jones says. “We want it so that if you jump through hoops in the medical market, you qualify to participate in this parallel adult use sector.”

Reformers hope a 2016 ballot measure could pull support from the younger, progressive voters who tend to turn out for a presidential election. A challenge for the industry will be to unite around a single initiative. Big donors have taken a wait-and-see approach, holding off an endorsing one of the several measures until proponents file final drafts.

“If we lose at the ballot, it wouldn’t be because voters aren’t ready for legalization,” Jones says. “It would be because the activists couldn’t get their act together.”

On Monday, the Milpitas city manager sent out a press release to announce that he’s not only been cleared of allegations by a former department head, but also to note he’s doing a bang-up job.

“Mr. Williams is an excellent leader and someone Milpitas is proud to call our city manager,” Mayor Jose Esteves said in the press release, which is peppered with quote from Williams’ three biggest supporters at City Hall.

The City Council launched an investigation in April after Steve McHarris, Milpitas’ then-director of Planning and Neighborhood Services, filed a complaint on his way out of the city’s employ. He accused the city manager of creating a hostile work environment, trying to reverse approval of paid time off and unethical dealings with a developer.

Rather than having the City Attorney

Mike Ogaz review the allegations, the council hired an outside lawyer, Amy Oppenheimer, to advise them.

In its press release titled “Milpitas City Manager Cleared of Allegations Lodged Against Him, Praised by City Council for Continued Leadership of the City,” the city says unnamed investigators spoke to department heads and other staff about the allegations.

Sources at City Hall, however, say that’s far from accurate.

The council hired Oppenheimer, who advised the council to conduct a separate investigation into the charge of Williams’ unethical dealings with a developer. Councilmembers then dismissed the recommendation and dumped Oppenheimer to conduct their own review of the McHarris complaint.

Rather than calling on outside help, the council formed an ad hoc subcommittee of Mayor Esteves and Councilwoman Marsha Grilli to take

over interviewing the staff about the allegations. But, according to people close to the investigation, the pair never spoke to McHarris, Ogaz or human resources director Carmen Valdez.

The subcommittee concluded, based on those limited conversations, that Williams was innocent and deserved kudos for the recent upheaval at City Hall. While Williams came away with glowing reviews, Ogaz and Valdez didn’t survive the summer.

Valdez left her HR post early, moving up her retirement date three times after Williams got upset about the way she handled the McHarris complaint. Ogaz was promptly fired under the guise of saving money by replacing his entire office with an outside law firm.

Now, Valdez, McHarris and Ogaz plan to sue the city, which already faces lawsuits over age discrimination.

Beau Goldie got on a plane Friday to fly to Savannah, Georgia, and the timing for the trip is extraordinary.

As CEO of the Santa Clara Valley Water District, a $377 million public agency that supplies water and flood control for 1.9 million people, Goldie’s job status has never been less secure.

On Oct. 2, San Jose Inside confirmed that the District Attorney’s office has launched an investigation into the district following allegations of conflicts of interest and fraudulent billing. The district’s Board of Directors has already held a series of meetings to review Goldie’s performance—they’re reportedly taking steps to remove him.

In an emergency closed session meeting, the CEO informed the district’s seven-person board that he would not be able to attend the Oct. 13 board meeting, arguably the most important of his career. What Goldie failed to mention was that he’s taking a seven-day trip to Georgia for a threeand-a-half-day conference.. Documents obtained through a Public Records Act (PRA) request show that the CEO didn’t even register for the conference until Oct. 2, a day after he told the board he needed to miss its next meeting. In total, the trip is expected to cost $2,786.

San Jose’s core comes alive as C2SV once again melds tech, music

HE THIRD annual C2SV gala hoedown spectacular took place last weekend on South First Street in San Jose.

Creative Convergence Silicon Valley, a.k.a. c2sv, brought together hi-tech hotshots, entrepreneurs, seasoned conference keynoters and longtime valley legends.

The variety of discussion illuminated the past, present and future of Silicon Valley, and after the tech conference-y powwow

concluded each day, venues up and down the street unleashed music for attendees to experience.

Social media kingpin Robert Scoble kicked off the whole shebang with some insight into the sheer variety of new apps emerging solely just to monitor everyone’s behavior 24/7. They supposedly provide us with just what we want. If you’re at Levi’s Stadium and want to know which bathrooms to avoid, well, this is now possible.

Jack McCauley then joined Scoble to talk about virtual reality. McCauley is a great example of the type of hero that graced the stage during this event. He helped start Oculus VR, which Facebook later bought for $2 billion. McCauley also developed the original scrolling function of the computer mouse and

also wrote the original specs for what’s now the USB port. He can also be blamed for much of the engineering behind the Guitar Hero video game series. Just listening to McCauley yak with Scoble on stage about the pros and cons of VR, along with Jaunt CEO Jens Christensen, was fantastic.

Many people at C2SV seemed proud to call themselves evangelists.

Fast-talking “change evangelist” Brian Fanzo, who flew in from Virginia just for the event, took the stage at several different junctures, often preaching the virtues of live-streaming for the millennial generation. According to Fanzo, 40 million hours of video are piped through Periscope every day. The “consume now” generation is upon us, he declared, meaning: Why dick around with uploading a YouTube and contaminating the whole thing with SEO dogshit just so people can find it?

Live streaming is the future, and thanks to Fanzo, an extra 3,000 people watched his presentation on Periscope. Yowza.

Since every single business on South First Street is capable of presenting music of some sort, a variety of sounds unfolded each night. In particular, one special performance went down at Caffe Frascati, when the legendary calypso singer Lord Superior played an intimate set for about 40 minutes, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the crowd. Straight from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Lord Superior, 75, is one of the last remaining musicians from the old-school calypso era of decades past. He performed a rousing set of traditional songs accompanied by a clarinetist.

Lord Superior’s gig was a perfect example of what should be transpiring in any real urban place, as part of any festival or conference: a landmark performance that goes down in a tiny spot on the main strip. Plenty of other bands gigged that same night, although it was hard to tell if the daytime crowd who watched the conference presentations were indeed staying around for the music afterward, or just shuffling on home.

Even at just two days, many other highlights emerged. Sometimes just being in the presence of legendary characters who invented seemingly everything and then sitting in the crowd while those characters tell stories is just plain fascinating.

Philippe Kahn was one of those characters. Yet another living legend of Silicon Valley history, Kahn has always been an eccentric operator, simultaneously on the fringe and at the locus of every wave of everything for 30-plus years in his own amusing French fashion. Kahn, of course, started Borland back in the 1980s, spent years in court fighting Lotus, pioneered wireless synchrony and was the first one to rig a phone to a digital camera, thereby instantly sending an image over a public network in 1997.

He also has a music degree from the Conservatory in Zurich, Switzerland.

The history of Silicon Valley is filled with people like Kahn and Jack McCauley, those who developed, pioneered and/or patented all sorts of different things across multiple technologies, all of which anticipated all sorts of other things across multiple technologies. This is why the evolutions of Silicon Valley are fantastic to follow, especially for those of us who grew up alongside all of it. I feel creatively converged.

OF MARTIANS & MATH How a local computer programmer with a fetish for scientific fact accidentally penned a best-selling sci-fi novel, inspired a blockbuster and reignited the public’s interest in a manned mission to Mars

OT FAR FROM the front door of his home in Mountain View’s North Whisman neighborhood, computer programmer Andy Weir can see the hulking skeleton of Hangar One that looms over Moffett Federal Airfield.

There was a time when the imposing structure served as a shelter for the USS Macon—one of the largest rigid airships ever built. These days, however, much of the business conducted at Moffett Field

concerns reaching heights far greater than those achieved by that massive dirigible.

The airfield is now home to the Ames Research Center, one of NASA’s largest facilities outside of the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

It is fitting that Weir should live so close to this Silicon Valley landmark. After all, he is the author of the 2014 novel, The Martian—the basis for the new Ridley Scott-directed, Matt Damon-starring

blockbuster of the same name, which just captured the No. 1 spot at American box offices for the second weekend in a row.

“It’s been a wild ride,” says Weir, a longtime Bay Area denizen.

Even in early 2014, as The Martian was on the verge of a physical release through a real publishing house, Weir says he never imagined that it would result in him hanging out with Matt Damon and Jeff Daniels at the Toronto International Film Festival,

as he did last month. He also didn’t intend for his book—which started out as a series of short, connected stories on his personal blog—to spark broad public interest in space exploration.

Back when he first started writing about a fictional astronaut marooned on Mars, he really only had one objective in mind: to visualize what an actual mission to Mars would look like using presentday technology.

hero, Mark Watney, realizes that he’s been abandoned by his crewmates, he begins plotting his survival— with math. He counts the uneaten rations that the crew left behind, calculating their caloric value and cross-referencing that data point with the number of days until the next scheduled mission to Mars is due to arrive. He soon concludes that his food won’t last him long enough. However, it just so happens that Watney is a biologist and the folks back home saw fit to give the Ares team a single serving of uncooked potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner. He determines that he may be able to grow potatoes by planting the tubers, but first he needs more water—a problem he overcomes by burning the hydrazine left behind in one of the mission’s landing vehicle.

(Water vapor is a byproduct of burning hydrazine.)

“Doing the science presented me a with a lot of plot points that I otherwise wouldn’t have thought of,” Weir says, explaining how his thought-experiment about a manned mission to the Red Planet ultimately led to a fully fledged sci-fi survival tale.

Originally self-published in 2011, Weir’s novel made a huge splash with critics and the media— especially among science and technology journalists—when it was re-released to a wider audience by Crown Publishing in 2014. The Wall Street Journal called it “the best pure sci-fi novel in years,” and a piece on Wired.com described the book as “the most riveting math problem you’ll ever read.”

Critics everywhere noted that everything in the novel—from the math underlying the trajectories of the fictional spacecraft, Hermes, to the ingenious hacks that Watney devises to stay alive longer than his intended stay on Mars—all jibe with extant scientific knowhow and currently available technology. In effect, The Martian is more science fact than science fiction.

“We have the technology to go to Mars right now,” says Michael Flynn, a NASA scientist working at Ames.

‘If you want to really understand what life is and what the meaning of it is, you need to go out there and find distinctly different life forms and study them’ It’s little surprise that Weir would choose to spend his free time this way.

“I’ve always been sort of a science geek,” he says. “I know a lot about the space program. I’m not an expert, but I’m an enthusiast. I just really like the stuff. I think the details of the technology are really interesting.”

Weir’s fascination with the subject matter is quite apparent. Beginning with The Martian’s action-packed first chapter, all the way through its nail-biting conclusion, he keeps the science front and center, while simultaneously maintaining a compact and readable style.

recycling systems for manned space missions for about 22 years and has contributed to technology that has been used on the International Space Station. These days, he is working primarily on the development of a human mission to Mars and the establishment of permanent habitats there.

According to Flynn, one of Watney’s biggest challenges on Mars would be the scarcity of water. “It’s the limiting commodity in space,” he says, explaining that due to its weight and the fact that it can be recycled, “the general philosophy is to not bring much water with you and then just recycle it when needed.”

David Bubenheim is a senior research scientist at NASA Ames.

With a Ph.D. in plant physiology, he’s been working on the problem of growing plants in space for more than 20 years.

“I enjoyed the movie quite a bit,” Bubenheim says of The Martian. “In terms of the specifics of the plant growth part, I thought that they did a pretty good job. I didn’t see anything presented in the movie that I looked at and giggled and thought, ‘That seems far fetched.’”

Giving the filmmakers “the benefit of the doubt,” he says he believes certain details may have been left out to avoid bogging the audience down with technical jargon.

enthusiastic space nerds, pleased about the excitement his book and the film are generating.

“They’ve never seen anybody put this much effort into being this accurate,” says Weir, who at one point while writing the novel used his programming skills to model the precise orbital paths that the astronauts would chart on their fictional voyage. “They see it as a way to inform the public about the realities of space travel. They hope it will engage the public in the space program.”

“I find it very exciting,” Bubenheim says about the prospect of The Martian boosting public and government support for a manned Mars mission. When he first began working at NASA, he says the administration was aiming for a 2015 launch date to send humans to the fourth rock from the sun. However, about 10 years ago, funding for the project dried up. “We were very much on track, and then we just stopped working on it.”

For the past five years Bubenheim

has been working on climate change and ecosystem health.

“If you want to really understand what life is and what the meaning of it is, you need to go out there and find distinctly different life forms and study them,” Flynn says, explaining that the DNA of every living organism on this planet can be traced back to a single ancestor.

“It’s like if you want to study dogs, but all the dogs you have access to are beagles. You can study them all, but you’ll only really understand something about beagles—until you find another dog. That changes everything.”

In short, Flynn says, traveling to Mars could hold the key to understanding “the meaning of life.”

For his part, Weir is hopeful that his book might help Flynn find what he is looking for.

“That wasn’t a goal when I wrote the book, but it’s an awesome side effect,” Weir says. “I’m a big fan of NASA, and I’d like them to have more funding and if somehow my book helps that on, I’m happy.”

REE LEAVES may be changing color, but autumn remains hot and sunny, which all but requires visits to sidewalk cafés and restaurants. While the main drag in Mountain View, Castro Street, may not exactly offer the peoplewatching of an Italian piazza, the authentic food and service at Doppio Zero Pizzeria Napoletana brings Naples one step closer to Silicon Valley.

Lunch starts with Polpettine ($8) and a side of sautéed broccolini ($7), served by a waiter with a notable Italian accent. The polettine dish consisted of four meatballs swimming in a spicy tomato sauce topped with a slice of grilled bread. The sauce was well balanced between sour, sweet and salty, and the meatballs were respectable. The generous helping of sauce made for a great dip with the grilled bread, and the tender broccolini was sauteed well with chunks of garlic, drizzles of olive oil and a sprinkle of Italian chilies.

By the time our wild boar fettuccine ($16) arrived, the waiter had figured out we were splitting the dishes and out came two plates each with a neat coil of housemade pasta topped with parmesan crumbles and

edges and crispier at the bottom.

The middle was soft, though not so soft that it took away from the structural integrity of the slice. It was still a darn good pizza with a great combination of quality cheeses and tasty prosciutto.

With so many ways to shortcut the preparation of a mainly three-ingredient cuisine (flour, tomatoes and cheese), it’s important to appreciate Doppio Zero’s commitment to treating these ingredients right.

During my meal, the quality of ingredients was most evident in the tender broccolini, the tastiest of cheeses on the pizza and the freshness of the pasta. Most importantly, Doppio Zero makes a mean wild boar ragu sauce, served with a side of accommodating Italian hospitality.

aniv Benaroya’s restaurateur father gave him two options: go to college or start selling pita. Benaroya, 18 at the time, chose the latter and began his apprenticeship at a bakery that imported all their equipment from Israel, the flatbread and Benaroya’s homeland.

“The quality really got me excited,” he says. “And it was my dream to open a restaurant, so I knew I had to start by learning how to bake and work my way backwards from there.”

When the bakery’s lease expired, Benaroya went to college and invested in real estate, before opening his first Gotta Eatta Pita store in Danville with partner Eric Huber. They now have four locations and hope to double that number in the next year while keeping their brand local to the Bay Area. The pita possesses a supple texture and the smooth exterior of a Japanese pastry, tasting radically different from additive-laden, plastic-wrapped varieties.

“It’s about a four-hour process to make pita bread,” Benaroya says. “It’s ongoing, like making pizza—you don’t premake pizza or pita. We make it all day, fresh with no preservatives. It only has a life of 12 hours. That’s the life of real pita bread.”

Like Chipotle, Gotta Eatta Pita serves bowls or wraps assembly-line style.

Customers choose from bright red cabbage, fluffy couscous beads, smoky slow-cooked eggplant, nutty rich hummus and crisp flash-fried falafel. A bowl goes for $10, but it’s food enough for two, and of a quality and quickness that don’t often go together here.

“On every corner in Israel, that’s how food is served,” Benaroya says. “That’s the norm. I would eat it every single day, so that’s how I got connected to this whole thing. I just loved how much quality food you get. You don’t have to wait a minute. That’s the way it should be.”

The staff prepares every morsel from scratch in the open, stainless steel kitchen behind the counter. They clearly know their cuisine, which is a necessity as Mediterranean food comes into the mainstream. While it may have its own aisle in most supermarkets, not everybody knows what those crunchy brown balls are.

“Some people still have no idea what a falafel is,” Benaroya says. “[If not], we automatically give them some, say ‘try this out,’ then tell them what it is.”

With a new emphasis on pumping up the arts and humanities at a school that’s become increasingly associated with churning out the next generation of Silicon Valley tech workers, there was a need to improve existing institutions, like the Cantor Arts Center, and to create new spaces for the visual and performing arts.

In 2013, the Bing Concert Hall opened and in 2014, the Anderson

Collection at Stanford brought world-class post-World War II art to the campus. On Oct. 6, the final jewel in Stanford’s creativity crown, the McMurtry Building for Art and Art History, was dedicated.

“The Arts District is now fully formed,” says Connie Wolf, director of the Cantor Arts Center.

Adjacent to the Cantor, and just a short walk from the Bing, the McMurtry Building was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, at a cost of $85 million. The building occupies 100,000 square feet and is a place for both producing and studying art.

“We had high expectations for the building and it has exceeded them,” says Burt McMurtry, who along with

his wife, Deedee, donated $30 million toward the building’s construction.

“Students and faculty are swarming all over it and they love it.”

Unlike the old Cummings Art Building, with its subterranean classrooms and auditorium, the McMurty is a celebration of open space and light. Windows are everywhere and the interior is designed to encourage sharing, communication and collaboration among the art disciplines. Inspired by the courtyards and arcades throughout the campus, the architects wanted to pay homage to the university’s architectural traditions, both in aesthetic choices and materials used.

“We like to grow projects out of their environments,” Charles Renfro says, speaking at his pre-dedication lecture.

His firm created the design for the Broad Museum in Los Angeles, which opened last month to rave reviews, and for the new Berkeley Museum of Art that will open in 2016.

Renfro says his firm usually has tw objectives when designing a buildin to “read” the site so that they can “p out of existing buildings the impetu for what they will do,” and to make end product more “inclusive.” Citin other projects by the firm, includin the extremely popular Highline in New York City, Renfro says, “We lik public projects and the McMurtry i place where everyone on campus ca make art.”

The building is centered by an interior courtyard, designed to be a meeting place, with two distinct “strands” that emerge, jutting upwar with classrooms for studying art on one side and studios for creating art on the other. Different building materials complement the two sides with beige stucco for the art history side and brownish zinc for the applie art area. The emphasis seems to be on transparency, with an abundance of windows opening to the central courtyard and outdoor stairways tha mimic the arcades found in older pa of the campus.

It is on the rooftop garden, adorne with drought-resistant plants and enticing seating areas, that the visitor really appreciates the challenge of the site. TheatreWorks Silicon Valley does the same with Proof by tracking the depression and genius of a math prodigy. Catherine (Michelle Beck) considers her next move after years of caring for her once brilliant, then delusional, father while tackling doubts due to her gender, lack of college degree and inherited potential for mental instability.

“I like the way David Auburn (the Tony/Pulitzer-winning play’s writer) lets the cultural bias, the sexism, sneak up on you,” says director Leslie Martinson. “At first, it’s the fact she doesn’t have a degree that is the sticking point, but that’s not how Proof discrimination works. Everything on the surface is not Thru Nov 1, the full situation. Other characters can’t believe that a $19-$80 young, self-educated black woman could have done this.

“The play is always from Catherine’s perspective,” Martinson says. “We line up with her even when see her behaving badly. We have started from her point-ofview. Many lighting and scenic choices were made to stay in the bubble of her anxiety. Michelle has that balance. She’s tough and stubborn and even annoying, but completely engaging and charismatic. You root for her. You feel for her.”

The taut, smart dialogue of the play tightens tensions before releasing them with poignant wit and perceptive humor. The production’s choices flout expectations. Not only do math “nerds” show off their wild side, but the all-black cast shows that our commonly-held conceptions about who can do this kind of academic work are misguided. Through confident example, Proof redefines what we can expect from our world and ourselves.

“You can make change because you imagined it out of thin air. You can also make change when you see something and say, ‘I can do that.’” says Martinson. “It’s something like teenage girls seeing female secretaries of state and then a TV show, Madame Secretary. A multitude of movie festivals are coming to Silicon Valley

N HONOR OF the UN’s Millennium Development Goals—an ambitious slate of housecleaning projects for both the rich and poor countries of the world—the theme of the Oct. 16-26 United Nations Association Film Festival is “Running Out of Time.” The UNAFF, inarguably the most eclectic documentary festival in our area, and arguably the most important, heralds a scad of film fests throughout October.

Eddie Adams: Saigon ’68 concerns a famous atrocity: Nguyen Ngoc Loan’s summary execution at near point blank range of a prisoner who at first glance seems to be a South Vietnamese civilian.

The haunting scene, forever frozen in time by Eddie Adams’ camera, is one of the most recognizable images of the Vietnam War. Seeing shouldn’t have been believing: the deceased was the head of a death squad, and had been caught red-handed after murdering 30 civilians. That explains this streetside execution—does it justify it?

Another documentary at the UNAFF considers the problem of a rush to judgment. The only thing that could make you feel worse about the infamous Delhi gang-rape is seeing interviews with the parents of Jyoti Singh describing what happened to their daughter.The only thing that

could make you feel a little bit better is seeing the righteous fury that erupted afterwards. The New Year’s riots precipitated quick government action—swift prosecution as a way of avoiding the serious social problems revealed by the Singh case.

Leslee Udwin’s excellent India’s Daughter: The Story of Jyoti Singh is a thorough (if necessarily graphic) anatomy of the murder—investigated with great access to the physicians, police and lawyers who handled the case. The atrocious crime was blamed variously on ’roid rage, alcohol and the commonly held belief that any woman out walking unescorted by her father or her brother late at night (8pm, actually) is asking for it.

(Defense lawyers of noteworthy—if professional—smugness give this vomitinducing logic an airing.) Udwin takes us to the Ravidas Colony slum, and to worse places. The high and low angles on the story justify the film’s title: Udwin seeks a national background for this truly national tragedy.

On a happier note, Alice Walker: Beauty in Time is a documentary on the upward and onward life of Alice Walker. One of eight children of a family in rural Georgia, she grew up to be a Pulitzer prize-winning author, who used her fame to work for social justice. “Activism is the rent we pay for living on this planet,” she says.

The first weekend of the UNAFF coincides with the sixth annual Silicon Valley African Film Festival, which runs Oct. 16-19 in Mountain View. Receptions, narratives and shorts are offered up. Among the feature films from Rwanda, Burkina Faso and other nations, is Zola, which considers a Zimbabwean family broken by joblessness and AIDS; only the son is able to escape the cycle— by auditioning for a dance contest.

Ojuju from Nigeria, cleverly binds the problems of Nigeria’s notoriously polluted water with the ever-popular zombie theme. Something in the river is turning a city rabid, and a group of survivors try to fight their way out.

Among the shorts, L’enigma by Fidae Sbaai of Morocco gives an Arab Spring backdrop to the famous riddle of the honest and the dishonest guard. Vasilis Biloumis’ All This Dust, set on the littered seaside of Ghana, tricks us with what seems to be a love story. It is, but not with the ending we expect. The unprofessional actors and the rough-hewn angles make this especially ingenious. A little boy, who is told to go away by a girl, says, “Who, me?” “No, the person behind you!” she snaps. And the poor boy (and the camera) swivels to look for this non-existent figure.

The Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival is also underway, bringing dozens of films to local screens, including a reprise of a movie that needs more attention—Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem. It’s Israeli actress and filmmaker Ronit Elkabetz’s scarifying story of the labyrinthine Orthodox divorce courts, which could give Kaf ka a lesson or two in the Kaf kaesque. Also upcoming is the local leg of the 3rd i San Francisco International South Asian Film Festival, running through Nov. 1 in Palo Alto; and the seventh annual San Jose International Short Film Festival (Oct. 22-25) featuring actress and director Jennifer Morrison as the fest’s guest of honor.

metroactive FILM An epic fictional film about the boy soldiers used as shock troops throughout Africa from the Second Congo War to the Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria. In the highlands of an unnamed African country, there’s a buffer zone between government forces and armed rebels. When the barrier falls and the soldiers arrive, Agu (Abraham Attah) is forced into the army of a charismatic psycho called “the Commandant” (Idris Elba). On the trek to the coast he participates in the skirmishes and slaughters.

“Map the victory!” orders the Commandant after one massacre of civilians. The film’s director, former UC-Santa Cruz student Cary Joji Fukunaga, does what’s done in the best war movies—he balances the sense of pity with the sensationalism, and unveils a ghastly irony when exposing the character of the top brass. (The head of the rebels is a venal little Goebbels of a man, with trembling Asian investors waiting in his lobby to see him.) The African bush looks as verdant as Henri Rousseau’s forest—Fukunaga amplifies the colors into hallucination, to reflect the horrors Agu sees and perpetrates. This is the first great film on a real-life horror, the children’s crusades of the neverending Great War of Africa. Attah is startlingly good, but the movie is really held together by Elba’s Commandant, a well-rounded, fascinating observation of a war criminal who is ultimately all too human—he calls his band of maniacs “a battalion.” Working as producer, director, cinematographer and scriptwriter (adapting the Nigerian-born novelist Uzodinma Iweala’s novel), Fukunaga surpasses even his innovative version of Jane Eyre and of the odyssey Sin Nombre.

He’s a master filmmaker, worthy of this vast and tragic subject. (Netflix Original). (RvB)

CAROUSEL (1956) The no-good, part-time carny, Billy Bigelow (Gordon MacRae), has been doing manual labor in Heaven for 15 years, when he gets a chance to return to Earth for a day to make amends to his widow (Shirley Jones).

Based on Ferenc Molnar’s lethally effective Liliom (filmed by everyone from Frank Borzage to Fritz Lang), this tale of beyond-the-grave redemption is built around a rich overture and the show-stopper “You’ll Never Walk Alone”—it’s one

of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most poignant musicals, and Henry King’s stodgy direction can’t harm it. (Plays Oct 16-18 in Palo Alto at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

LABYRINTH OF LIES Giulio Ricciarelli’s feature debut is all about how relatively recent history is the first to be forgotten. Alexander Fehling—a commanding young star in the Jude Law/Julian Sands mode—plays Johann Radmann, a principled young state prosecutor in 1958 Germany who is tipped off to an official crime. Despite Germany’s laws against Nazis in public positions, a former member of the Waffen-SS is discovered employed as an elementary school teacher. Under the urgings of Thomas, a reporter (Andre Szymanski), Radmann decides to investigate the bigger picture. The idealistic prosecutor is urged on to the investigation by an aging district attorney named Bauer (the late Gert Voss, a figure worthy of a Fritz Lang movie, and the film’s standout).

Around 150 Nazis were convicted at Nuremberg, but the majority of the functionaries at the death camps are still at liberty. The notorious Josef Mengele has protectors high up in the government. And the current administration in Bonn is trying to keep Germany focused on the Cold War. The film is quickened

by Friederike Becht as Radmann’s girlfriend, a dressmaker with a cocky half-smile. But when Radmann’s nerves fail from the size of the task (and when Thomas withholds some key information—it’s a major breach of journalistic ethics, but no one cares) Labyrinth goes into extra innings. Cute embellishments, such as the romantic dialogue over a ripped coat, start to become frustrating. Ultimately, the movie changes focus from the real victims to the sadness of the investigators of the crimes. Like many of our Hollywood films about America’s atrocities in the war on terror, it’s not about a nation’s disgrace, it’s about a nation’s self-pity. EVERY STEP YOU TAKE In ‘Bridge of Spies,’ Tom Hanks plays an American insurance lawyer sucked into a world of espionage and paranoia at the dawn of the Cold War.

Spy Swap IT’S ONE OF his very best films, but the true story Bridge of Spies has the typical problem of Stephen Spielberg films. What would be a quick word to the wise in a more subtle director’s scene has to be repeated, heightened in closeup, underscored with the strains of John Williams (or Thomas Newman, in this case).

USSR has a prisoner we want back: the convicted spy against Russia, Lt. Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell).

Lines that justify the Coen Brothers credit on the script are here, particularly some comedic hair-splitting about the meaning of buying insurance. But there is also frustrating sentiment, as when Tom Hanks’ character explains to a government functionary that “All lives matter,” as if educated people talked in bumper-stickers 55 years ago.

Closer to John Le Carre than the usual Spielberg, the film mirrors the Bridge of Spies two different worlds each spy inhabits—the PG-13; 135 Mins. courtrooms and prisons Valleywide versus the setup of the U2 reconnaissance program out of Pakistan. Spielberg shuttles deftly between the two sides of the stories, and there are some unadorned words to the wise—passing stinging references to how the Bill of Rights has been mangled during our own War on Terror.

Hanks, continuing to excel as a mature, tricky and tough actor, plays New York insurance lawyer, Bill Donovan, who is drafted into the world of intelligencers in the days before the Berlin Wall was built.

Donovan is asked by the New York bar to take up the defense of a widely loathed figure, the frail Soviet spy, Col. Rudolf Abel (fascinatingly played by Mark Rylance). Abel barely escapes the electric chair and is alive as a pawn when the

Aside from his facility as a director, and the classic-movie style flow of his images,Spielberg is the American cinema’s reigning history geek. The scenery of Berlin, with the raw-cut border through it, is as richly observed as the ghetto in Schindler’s List. The thrilling, dialogue-free scenes of Abel’s stalking and capture at the beginning are replete with those seemingly trivial details that make the past the past.—Richard von Busack

Forgotten Gods’ new album, ‘Twin Sisters,’ melds blues, psych and party metal

HE WAY HE tells it, things just clicked.

From the very first time Dave Stoltenberg jammed with the rest of his current band, stoner metal act Forgotten Gods, it was clear that there was definite chemistry among the San Jose trio.

It was sometime in mid-2011 and Stoltenberg had just left his previous group, House of Doors. “For me, that’s like being single,” he says of being without a band. And so, like so many lonely singles, the guitarist turned to the Internet, pointing his browser to Craigslist.

“It was the first thing I saw,”

Stoltenberg says, recalling that fateful evening. The ad said “guitarist wanted,” and listed a few influences, including Mastodon and The Sword.

He responded and before long the Forgotten Gods lineup was cemented.

“There wasn’t any big tryout. It just kinda happened. I always kinda thought it was meant to be.”

Indeed, Forgotten Gods must possess an exceptional rapport.

Even for a band that’s been playing together for the better part of four years, recording a full-length album in just two days—as they did with their latest, Twin Sisters—isn’t easy, especially considering the strength of the record.

“It was pretty stressful,” Stoltenberg says—“not much room for error. But, we figured that Black Sabbath did Paranoid in one day. We had twice that amount of time.”

Twin Sisters, released in late August, may never rise to the legendary level

of Paranoid. However, the record is certainly the band’s most polished effort to date—due in no small part to the enlistment of producer Tim Green.

It follows their 2013 LP, Fall of the Dagger, and 2012’s self-titled EP. After recording their first two efforts themselves, Twin Sisters marks the first time Forgotten Gods have sought the help of a producer.

Stoltenberg says his band tapped Green based on his experience working with bands like Melvins and Hot Lunch. The producer definitely boasts a long and varied resume—ranging from the punky sounds of Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney to the glitchy post rock of From Monument to Masses. “This guy was a pretty obvious choice.”

The band gave Green plenty of leeway in recommending tones and applying techniques to thicken up Forgotten Gods’ already-sludgy sound.

“We put our trust in him to do his thing and put his signature on it,” Stoltenberg says. “In the end, I think that was kinda cool.”

The producer beefed up Stoltenberg’s riffs by having the guitarist double many of his lines with

a baritone guitar. He meticulously tuned drummer Kevin Swartz’s kit, and had bassist Pete Rice playing through the same Sunn amp that inspired the iconic Seattle drone metal band, Sunn O))). Stoltenberg liked the amplifier that Green chose for him so much that he ended up buying one for himself after Forgotten Gods finished recording.

Recorded mostly live, with minimal overdubbing, Twin Sisters is an energetic record—rooted in blues and taking cues from early psychedelic pioneers. The ascendant riff of “Coyote,” bounds upward, recalling the pentatonic playfulness of Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello, before erupting into a Hendrixian solo that finds the sweet spot between messy and marvelous.

The following track—Twin Sisters’ epic centerpiece, the 10-minute “Kaleidoscope Woman”—alternates dynamically between creeping, bass grooves and explosive, fuzzy crescendos, not unlike Sabbath’s “Hand of Doom.”

Though Forgotten Gods meet the criteria for “stoner rock,” their tunes seem fueled by alcohol. The band’s raucous, amped-up blues licks and bouncy drumming at times recall the party metal of Every Time I Die. The band’s tendency toward melding heavy-hitting riffs and psychedelic textures lines up with Stoltenberg’s background.

“I grew up playing metal—and in punk bands, too,” he says. “At home I would be learning Pantera and Metallica songs. But I also loved Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin.”

Also, he says with a chuckle, “I’m not that great at sweep picking,” which eliminates the possibility of him playing the more technical sub-genres of metal requiring extreme dexterity.

But more than anything, Stoltenberg says Forgotten Gods have arrived at their sound for a simple reason: it’s fun.

“I’m just way into it,” he says.

Prairie Home Companions FANS OF HEAVENLY harmonies and lilting acoustic tunes will surely be flocking to Stanford University's Bing Concert Hall this Saturday, when the CanadianAmerican trio The Wailin' Jennys bring their award-winning act to town.

The band consists of Ruth Moody on soprano vocals, banjo, accordion, and bodhran (a type of Irish drum); Nicky Mehta on mezzo vocals, guitar, harmonica and ukulele; and Heather Masse on alto vocals and upright bass.

All three songwriters are equally influenced by a variety of styles, including folk, country, bluegrass, gospel and pop. However, it is their trademark soaring harmonies that create the group’s signature sound, Moody says. “It's pretty eclectic, so the three-part harmony threads it all together.”

Though they have distinct vocal ranges, the trio trade off singing leads, which means they can experiment with harmonic arrangements, giving them all a chance to sing different parts. “It's always fun to switch it up,” Moody says. “We'll see what blends best.”

The Jennys, named after country great Waylon Jennings, have released four critically acclaimed albums, as well as several solo works. Moody’s also recently recorded and toured in Europe with Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. She says the Jennys’ live show presents a good variety of original and cover songs, drawn from all their releases.

They've gained many new fans from their frequent appearances on the beloved NPR institution, A Prairie Home Companion, and they've been touring steadily for years—periodically taking breaks for family reasons and sometimes bringing the family along. Moody’s brother, Richard, is rounding out the live act currently, playing fiddle, viola and mandolin.

After the Stanford show and a couple of East Coast gigs, the group will be taking some time off to work on writing new material and recording their next album.

Moody recently wrote a song “unlike what I usually write”—in the style of Cajun dance music. “It could be fun but I don’t know if it will turn into a Jennys song.”

As songwriters, she says they take inspiration from personal life as well as the environment around them.

"We're all different writers but we all go through that private process of navigating what's happening and making sense of our place in this world.”

One moment, you see your relationship heading toward the town of OnlyYouville, and the next, it’s looking more like a Ten Commandments production still of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. Understand why men commit: because they come to love a particular woman more than they love their freedom—not because they’ve decided it would be a bore to have sex with the Pilates-teaching twins. Getting to “only you” happens after a guy starts to feel attached to you, which comes out of a combination of sexual attraction, emotional compatibility, and the sense that you have a package of qualities that he’s unlikely to get from anyone else. Feeling this way takes time— time spent together, and sometimes, a little time spent comparison shopping.

Trying to rush the process is like planting a pea in the morning, yelling “GROW! GROW! GROW!” and expecting to be climbing a beanstalk by noon.

Also, even for a guy who’s starting to care about you, hearing “We need to have the commitment talk” can be like hearing the starting gun at the Olympics. There are couples who get serious without ever having this icky conversation. It just happens organically. But to avoid misunderstandings, right from the start, you should be indicating your interest in getting into a relationship. No, not with strategically strewn Brides magazines or messages magic-markered across your breasts: “MARRY ME!!!” You simply drop remarks about what you want and then ask questions to draw out what a guy’s up for. This allows you to get out fast if your goals aren’t a match—as opposed to getting to the four-month mark, holding him down and screaming in his face: “So what’s it gonna be, buddy? You looking to start a family—or a harem?!”

As for the woman in this photo, she could be someone to your man—or someone standing near him when his friend was taking his picture. (People shooting photos rarely say, “Okay, you two, get as far apart as you can.”) You could ask him—and reveal that you’ve been going all Secret Squirrel on social

media. But you could also ask yourself, simply by applying context. Look at the photo as one piece of information in the whole of your experiences with him: Is he increasingly sweet and attentive?

Increasingly eager to see you? Are you starting to meet his friends? Chances are, you already have the information you need to figure out whether your relationship is going places—without trying to conduct it at a speed that suggests your ancestry is part French, part Italian, and part cheetah.

However, there are full lips and lips full of stuff some plastic surgeon injected in them, and any plastic surgery that can be spotted as such is usually a turnoff to men. (You might as well get a tattoo that says, “Hi, I’m insecure!”) So, tempting as it is to keep up with the Kardashians, you’ll be more attractive to your boyfriend if you don’t seem to need to. Best of all, to accomplish this, all you have to do is avoid spending hundreds of dollars to look like you just got out of a heavy make-out session with the vacuum cleaner.

If juglone can induce cell death in humans, how are walnuts good for us? Is it juglone in walnuts that causes walnut/pecan allergy?—Maja Ramirez There is, admittedly, something a little uncomfortable about a phrase like “cell death.” Cells are what we’re made of; death is bad; etc. So given certain facts, Maja, yours is a reasonable question: Walnut trees, along with other members of the Juglandaceae family (pecan, hickory), do produce a compound called juglone.

And the 2005 study you linked to in your email, from the journal Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, did indeed find that juglone induced death in the human cells researchers applied it to.

The authors concluded their report with the suggestion that “since juglone is present in human health and beauty products, a further understanding of its effects on human cells is warranted.”

First, though, let’s back up. The various nonalimentary benefits of juglone, medicinal and otherwise, have been well-known for ages. (And it’s nonfood uses I’m talking about exclusively here: juglone, found in the walnut tree’s roots, bark, leaves, wood, and green nut-hulls, is unrelated to allergies triggered by eating the nuts themselves.) In the early 20th century, for instance, American doctors prescribed juglone to treat various skin conditions; it’s been used as a folk remedy around the world to battle inflammation, fungus, intestinal issues— you name it.

In addition to enumerating its long career as a natural medicine (as well as an ingredient in hair dye), a 2012 literature review suggests we haven't yet tapped juglone’s full potential, including as an herbicide and biocide—the authors propose using it to rid ships’ ballast water of invasive marine species. These properties, too, are already folk knowledge. Lazy fishermen used to dump unripe walnut hulls into ponds to take advantage of juglone’s toxic effects. The stunned fish would float to the surface, easily collectible. And as an herbicide, juglone will be familiar to backyard gardeners as the reason you don’t want to grow some vegetables too close to a black walnut tree, the richest source of juglone in the Juglandaceae family: it inhibits the respiration of certain plants (including tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant) living within the walnut’s root zone, which in a mature tree can extend up to 80 feet.

So far, so good: this is potent stuff, and humans have figured out ways to deploy it that, often as not, exploit its unique lethality. But inside the body?

That 2005 paper you cite found two responses juglone produced in human cells: necrotic and apoptotic. Necrotic’s no good. That’s the capital-D death you’re worried about but scientists evidently aren't—I wasn’t able to find much more research into juglone’s necrotic tendencies. They’re far more interested in getting juglone to induce apoptosis, which is the naturally occurring process, also known as “programmed cell death,” by which our bodies cycle out cells that are no longer wanted, or that present a threat to our health. Scientists’ thinking is this: Can juglone be used to produce an apoptotic response in something really nasty inside of us—say, cancer?

The research has certainly been promising. A 2009 study in Cell Biology International reported on exposing, in vitro, a chemotherapy-resistant line of melanoma cells to juglone; the juglone did enough of a number on the cells and their tendency to proliferate that the scientists suggested the compound might be characterized as an anticancer agent according to criteria put forth by the National Cancer Institute. Similar reactions have been observed when juglone has been let loose on leukemia, prostate cancer, and cervical carcinoma.

I’ll allow as to there being one distinct danger associated with a full-grown black walnut tree, as evidenced by the long-running saga of several Toronto residents trying to get permission to remove such a tree from their neighborhood. It seems the walnuts fall so hard and heavy that somebody getting seriously beaned is, to hear the locals tell it, practically inevitable. When in 2007 the city council considered their most recent anti-tree petition, one witness cited her 87-year-old mother as a potential victim: “A good whack from one of those fruits is probably going to see the end of her.”

“Walnuts do fall,” Toronto’s parks chief admitted, “and they could cause a little bruise.” But the council still blocked the tree’s removal, deeming the hazards it posed to be, apparently, quite negligible.
