I understand the process for potential “pay to play” ethical violations and know it is not political at this stage.

These are serious allegations, an example of what’s wrong with our political system, and I am eager to see where this investigation leads.

La La Law The sudden realization that most of San Jose’s lawmakers are law breakers is not the best way to end summer vacation. Not that they intended to end up on the wrong side of the law, of course. It’s just that, well, most of San Jose’s current elected officials didn’t really understand all that legal mumbo jumbo their predecessors cooked up. At least as far as it pertains to their own election transparency. Earlier this summer, MANH NGUYEN won a special election to fill the northside District 4 City Council seat. His victory was undercut weeks later, when he was fined $10K by the city’s ethics commission, which found that he repeatedly failed to disclose late contributions in a timely manner. The city’s election code, Title 12, requires all candidates to file reports that note any contributions of $250 or more that were made between the last filing deadline and the election. Nguyen’s media company was making tens of thousands of dollars in late contributions to his campaign. Looking at campaign filings of other council members who’ve run in the last two years, as well as first-term Mayor SAM LICCARDO, it seems nearly everyone has failed to comply with San Jose election laws. Liccardo hauled in more than 200 late contributions of $250 or more in the general election, but he only disclosed donors of $1,000 or above—the threshold required by the state’s Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC). His challenger in 2014, DAVE CORTESE, had a similarly high number of undocumented late contributions. Roughly half the council also failed to comply with Title 12. City Attorney RICK DOYLE said it’s “clearly not a good situation” and there could be “some cleanup” required.

ITH A MAGICIAN’S sleight-of-handdeftness, Cris Mendoza grinds, taps, tamps and brews the coffee grounds into a steaming, swirling espresso.

The taste, he says after a sip, reminds him of scones and burnt muscovado sugar.

“What do you think?” the ponytailed Chromatic Coffee barista asks his trainees. Nick Carbajal and Drake Mitchell, armed with pens and clipboards, take a taste from the glass and try to detect the same sugary vim. The downtown San Jose roastery—crammed with gleaming Italian espresso machines

and steel shelves of paper-bagged coffee—fills with the scent of a fresh roast over a low flame.

“You have to develop a taste for it,” Carbajal replies, jotting notes about chemistry, temperatures and flavor profiles. “This ain’t a cup of Folgers.”

Some hours into the training, Carbajal says he’s struck by the performative flair of his new craft—a far cry from the nose-to-the-grind beat of his past job in manual labor.

“People pay a premium for coffee this good, so you want to put on a show,” he says, adding that he comes from a long line of Comanche men who know their way around the kitchen. “I’m trying to master it—the precision, the whole thing—so I can be an expert, too, by the time I serve actual customers.”

Carbajal and Mitchell, who both have spent time living on the streets, will become the first baristas to work for

Kartma when it launches next month.

The first-of-its-kind coffee-cart startup will employ formerly homeless people, pay them a living wage ($12.50 an hour, to start) and equip them with not only the skills to brew gourmet coffee but to staff, stock, market and otherwise run a small business.

“We’ve been in San Jose for three years now and have proven that homeless men and women really do want another chance to work,” says Eileen Richardson, who created Kartma as a for-profit extension of Downtown Streets Team, a nonprofit she founded a decade ago to find homeless people housing and jobs. “Now for the first time we have a business where we can actually place them. It’s self-sustaining and it will give them an opportunity to get a real job with real, marketable skills they can transfer to other jobs.”

Kartma’s concept began as a boardroom pitch a year-and-a-half ago.

suggested buying a tuk tuk, an agile three-wheeled electric vehicle she often saw while working for the United Nations on the Thai-Myanmar border some years earlier. “I was thinking it could be like Lyft, something for short local rides,� she says. “Then we realized that everyone else was doing that. We needed something a little more unique.�

After more plotting and analysis and impassioned discussion, the Kartma idea morphed into its current iteration as a mobile coffee vendor. They’d still use the tuk tuk, while adding a second stationary cart, and court investors as a beneďŹ t corporation. “Now, in addition to job placement, we have a tool to create jobs for the people we work with,â€? says Chad Bojorquez, the associate director of employment with Downtown Streets Team, which has helped more than 200 people ďŹ nd jobs in the past year alone. “That’s huge. It’s one thing to place people in jobs, it’s another to actually create jobs for them.â€?

Leveraging the institutional backing of Downtown Streets Team as an established 10-year-old nonproďŹ t, Kartma will venture into an emerging ďŹ eld of social entrepreneurship. A conventional corporation has the sole aim of maximizing shareholder value, while a traditional nonproďŹ t relies on grants and donations. BeneďŹ t corporations, by contrast, are beholden to the triple bottom line of a social cause, environmental sustainability and proďŹ t.

In 2011, California became the sixth state in the nation to establish a tax designation for beneďŹ t corporations.

Sweeping economic recession had stoked the public’s distrust of Wall Street and corporate America, launching a movement to reward companies committed to the public good. As a beneďŹ t corporation, Kartma could potentially go public, spin off as a franchise and rake in proďŹ t while fulďŹ lling its social aim of employing the formerly homeless. Gearing up to launch next month, Kartma has raised money from eBay, the Knight Foundation, Technology Credit Union and crowdfunding through Indiegogo. “That’s what we’re all about: marketbased approaches that address poverty,â€? says Cassandra Staff, director of Santa Clara University’s Global Social BeneďŹ t Institute, which mentors beneďŹ t corporation founders. “Kartma is exactly

the type of project that we want to work with. It’s moving away from the typical aid model of giving things away. They’re saying we’re committed to ending homelessness and creating a business, a service and product, rather than soliciting from donors.�

Downtown Streets Team’s leaders hope that Kartma can also change the public’s perception about homelessness. “There’s this stereotype that homeless people don’t want to work,� Richardson says. “There’s this attitude of, ‘Get a job, bum.’ But we’ve proven that these men and women want to work. We just need to be creative in how we get them jobs and how we train them.�

Downtown Streets Team already offers job placement for team members who graduate from the nonproďŹ t’s work training. The goal is to leverage that network to ďŹ nd management positions for Kartma staffers who want to advance their careers. “We don’t want them going from Kartma to working the register somewhere else,â€? Bojorquez says. “We’re training them to become supervisors.â€?

For 58-year-old Carbajal—whose drug and alcohol addictions dragged him in and out of jails, hospitals and creekside homeless camps—the Kartma job gives him a shot at upward mobility for the ďŹ rst time in years. When San Jose dismantled its largest homeless settlement, The Jungle, just before Christmas last year, the South Bay native lost his longtime home, a weathered tent on the upper embankment. But he found a case manager through Downtown Streets Team as part of a city-funded effort to house displaced Jungle residents, and a paid gig cleaning up what was left of the Coyote Creek shantytown. A housing voucher comped his move to an old hotel on The Alameda. His body, which had been weakened by untreated diabetes and car crash-shattered bones, has since healed enough to weather a full day’s work.

Transitioning from the streets involves incessant appointments— doctors, caseworkers, parole officers, landlords and long-neglected debtors—a time-consuming catch-up from years off the grid. Carbajal says his hard-fought stability has given him a clearer view of the future and revived his ambitions, something he lost in “survival mode� on the streets. “I see this as a stepping stone,� he says. “It feels good to make goals again.�

Former Stones, Dead tour manager reunites with longtime music writer to discuss rock legends

UST A FEW years ago, Studio Bongiorno opened up in the old California Monument Building in Santa Clara, right across the street from the Mission Cemetery. For an art gallery, performance space and overall gathering spot, the joint is a nucleus of crackpot activity.

This week, two living monuments, former Rolling Stones tour manager Sam Cutler and legendary rock journalist Joel Selvin, will provide a rip-roaring conversation for anyone interested in rock history, especially Altamont.

Cutler operated with the Stones in the late ’60s. From Hyde Park to Altamont, he was there, doing what was essentially a thankless job.

For perhaps decades, Cutler was the dude most often scapegoated in the American media for the entire Altamont fiasco, that is, when the Stones played their ill-fated free concert that resulted in the death of an audience member at the hands of a Hells Angel. According to both Cutler and Selvin, much from Altamont has yet to be revealed. In fact, Selvin is at work on a book that should provide the final word on that dark historic event.

Cutler’s own 2010 book, You Can't Always Get What You Want: My Life With the Rolling Stones, the Grateful

Dead and Other Wonderful Reprobates, presents his side of the sordid details from Altamont. It’s an amazing piece of work. The Stones essentially bailed after the whole thing was over, leaving Cutler to deal with 100 percent of the fallout. Even after Cutler illuminates the roles played by surrogate Hells Angels, the mafia, the feds, the incessant hanger-ons, groupies, lawyers, promoters and politicians, it becomes clear that the complete story still hasn’t really been told. Hopefully Selvin’s book will do that.

After Altamont, Cutler’s book moves on to his tenure as the Grateful Dead’s tour manager in the subsequent years. After the chaotic narcissistic circus of the Rolling Stones, the Dead scene was polar opposite. According to Cutler, although everyone was wasted, including himself, the adventure was much more of a family-style journey.

just trying to right the ship in a mess of drugs and alcohol, while barely getting paid anything. Of course, this was long before the Dead rose to multimillionaire stadium rockers.

Cutler could have bashed both bands out of sour grapes. But he didn’t. That would have been a terrible book. Instead, it seems like he spent some serious years grappling with how to forgive, who to forgive, and that he harbors deep respect for the Stones and the Dead, especially now in his old age and now that he’s turned into a writer. Writing tends to do that to people. It makes them more self-reflective. And some damn good stories explode from the pages of his book. Not all the gaps get filled in, but it’s a great rock ‘n roll memoir.

This Friday will not be the first time Cutler and Selvin have co-headlined in Santa Clara. In 2013, when Cutler descended upon the States for the first time in years, the two appeared at Studio Bongiorno for a rip-roaring conversation. The stories were hysterical. One in particular featured Cutler punching out Bill Graham on the stage of the Oakland Coliseum, and then going through Jagger to essentially humiliate the famous Napoleonic promoter in his own element. According to Cutler, Graham always hated the Stones after that encounter. They were the only band he couldn’t dominate.

In 2013, that event at Studio Bongiorno with Cutler and Selvin was a lightning bolt of pure magic. The crowd overflowed onto the sidewalk outside. Cutler told stories about Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, Bill Graham, Jimi Hendrix, Syd Barrett and others I can’t even recall. And he’s an authoritative source. With him, sitting right there was Joel Selvin himself. Together they provided stories normally relegated to the bars after the show. Again, this was on some nondescript corner of suburban Santa Clara across from a cemetery. Who thought that would ever happen? Well, this Friday it will happen again. I guess lightning really does strike twice.

The Pod Invasion In a world overflowing with screens, audio-only is exploding.

N THE GRAY, quick-fading winter light, they gather.

In living rooms, in kitchens or on front porches, attentive and transfixed, they listen as voices spill out of the speakers. Huddled in a circle, they collectively gasp, grin, grimace and shake their heads in disbelief at the lurid details of a convoluted true-crime story packed with police procedural work and courtroom bravado, about a pair of estranged lovers and the murder that will forever link them.

From the sound of footsteps crunching through dead leaves, each listener creates a mental image of the park where the rope was found.

Interstitial musical motifs signal a change of scenery or simply provide a break in the action—a chance to collect one’s thoughts.

The scene might call to mind a 1940s American family gathered around a large, wood-paneled tube radio for the evening broadcast of The Lone Ranger, The Green Hornet or Buck Rogers.

But this is December 2014. If there is a terrestrial radio in the room, it is not carrying this broadcast. The program, NPR’s wildly popular Serial, is being piped through the speakers

from a laptop, smartphone or other mobile device.

The Serial listening parties are more than an indication of the program’s popularity. Yes, the show, hosted by Sarah Koening, is a smash hit—it clocked 41 million downloads by the end of last year and holds the record, among podcasts, as the fastest to fly past the 5 million download mark.

But these gatherings also point to a broader trend. More than a decade after its low-key launch, podcasting is enjoying a massive surge in popularity. From programs first established on the radio, like This American Life and Radiolab, to others, first established on TV, like Mad Money w/Jim Cramer and The

Daily Show Podcast without Jon Stewart, to shows like WTF, which catapulted comedian Marc Maron into the spotlight after years of toiling as a lesser-known standup act—more people than ever are making podcasts, and more people are tuning in.

Some of the freshest faces on the podcasting scene are Rosie La Puma and Eileen Williams, undergraduate students working with the Stanford Storytelling Project. The project aims to “promote the transformative nature of traditional and modern oral storytelling” by giving students the skills and tools to create their own audio stories.

In a world where a WiFi connection can be found at every coffee shop and everyone has a smart phone and a laptop near nearby, work follows us wherever we go.

It’s harder to find time to consume long-form, narrative-style journalism these days. That’s where podcasts come in.

“I just don’t have that time anymore,” she says. “But I can get that via radio (and podcasts).” Williams says she will listen to podcasts while tidying up, folding laundry, driving, exercising and in labs. She says she even listens at night as she is falling asleep, sometimes.

“I can get a lot more depth from radio

than I can from reading a (short blurb) on the Internet.”

Antique Technology In conversation, Williams sometimes uses the words “radio” and “podcast” interchangeably. That’s understandable, according to Jonah Willihnganz, director of the Stanford Storytelling Project.

“Podcasting is replacing print because people can have that kind of simultaneous experience,” Willihnganz says, underscoring Williams’ point. But there’s more to it than that, he says. The recent rise of audio-only broadcast storytelling is in many ways a return to a classic form of entertainment.

Today, many of the most popular podcasts are quite similar to the types of programs listeners were tuning into during the 1930s and ‘40s—when radio was an essential part of American life.

The “Golden Age” of radio brought with it countless hours of programming, including dramas replete with narration, multiple voice actors and elaborate sound effects. Such programming seemed old-fashioned by the late 1950s as televisions took over in American homes. The radio drama was effectively dead.

As radio stations ditched their dramatic and comedic programing, some of the most successful shows made the transition to TV-land— including Amos ‘n’ Andy and Dragnet.

In the interim decades, music came to dominate radio, while the majority of talk-only programs on the dial have been call-in shows covering news or sports.

Sound effects and music added to a radio broadcast—especially a news broadcast—were viewed back in the day as a violation of journalistic ethics, tantamount to doctoring a photograph.

But with the rise of podcasts, such as Snap Judgment, The Truth, The Moth and especially Radiolab, the texture and aural language of radio dramas are making a comeback.

“Radiolab was the first to really bring that back,” Willihnganz says.

The program took cues from NPR’s

An amended settlement has been proposed in a class action lawsuit claiming that StubHub, Inc. violated California law by recording and monitoring telephone calls made to its customer-service lines without informing callers that the call may be recorded or monitored. StubHub has denied the claims. After preliminary approval of the original settlement was granted on January 29, 2014, and after the notice and initial claims period expired on June 13, 2014, the Court declined to grant final approval of the settlement, but allowed to the parties to make some changes to the settlement and resubmit it for approval. Both rising juniors at Stanford, La Puma and Williams are longtime fans of podcasts, as well as NPR and audio storytelling in general— even though they’ve grown up in a world saturated with screens and 1,000-channel cable packages.

La Puma wasn’t yet a teenager when WiFi became ubiquitous and people began carrying tiny, touchscreen computers in their pockets.

Still, she says that podcasts—essentially terrestrial radio on-demand—are quite popular among her peers. And why shouldn’t they be?

La Puma echoes the observations of Willihnganz when discussing one of her favorite podcasts—The Truth, “which, logically is all ďŹ ction,â€? she says with a chuckle. “It’s actors and sound effects,â€? she says. “They call it a movie for your ears. You do end up picturing it immediately and understanding what space you’re in, just by the sound.â€?

The immersive experience podcasts provide is deďŹ nitely one reason for their rise in popularity, La Puma says. However, she continues, there is another major factor fueling the burgeoning growth of the format. “Audio is such an easily accessible medium,â€? she says, referring to the portability and affordability of audio production tools. “It doesn’t cost that much to get a microphone that works fairly well and some audio-editing software. There have been dozens—if not hundreds—of different podcasts that amateur radio makers have created. And they’ve built, from the ground up, a fanbase that they eventually get onto the radio (or a successful podcast).

Because of that, they’ve been able to ďŹ nd unique, individualized niches.â€?

Indeed, there are plenty of podcasting success stories. Jay

Tomlinson, for example, the creator of The Best of the Left podcast, turned his passion for politics into an awardwinning podcast—with little more than some basic recording tools and an Internet connection.

Comedian Marc Maron has a similar story. In his mid-40s, struggling to pay bills and watching his peers achieve major success in comedy, he started talking into a microphone—ranting to no one in particular and interviewing his friends in the standup world. The podcast blew up. His show now ranks as one of the most popular on podcasting services, including Stitcher and iTunes.

Maron recently interviewed President Barack Obama. He talked with the leader of the free world in the garage of his Los Angeles-area home.

Power of the ’Cast Of course, just because it’s easy to put together a podcast, doesn’t mean it’s easy to attract listeners. And Willihnganz certainly wants those who participate in the Stanford Storytelling Project to have their work heard and to be compelling.

That’s why Willihnganz founded the Storytelling Project. It’s also why he started the Braden Storytelling Grant, which is awarded each spring to applicants who submit compelling pitches. Recipients are given up to $3,000 and the summer months to produce an audio story which is then broadcast on the Storytelling Project’s KZSU radio show, The Human Experience, and published as a podcast.

Those awarded the grant are required to enroll in a complementary course in radio storytelling to help them learn script writing, editing, scoring and mixing audio.

Many of the students who come into the Storytelling Project—either as staff or recipients of the Braden grant, are used to researching and writing for readers, as opposed to listeners. Most students have spent their entire life writing analytic papers,� he says. Willihnganz and the other advisors at the Storytelling Project help the students learn how to write and produce in a way that optimizes the medium.

“Radio has everything that print has going for it and everything that music has going for it,� he says.

That’s why Willihnganz encourages his students to explore all the possibilities audio storytelling has to offer. “Sound can be a very good tool,� he says. Far from viewing music and sound effects only as a means of emotionally swaying the listener, he believes that they can be used in a way that contributes to a better understanding of a topic.

Case in point: the frequently heralded Radiolab, which he notes often uses sound and music to create aural infographics. Like the time Radiolab creator Abumrad and co-host Robert Krulwich deployed a choir to help demonstrate how different animals perceive color by singing more or less complex

harmonies and linking the sounds to those animals which saw more or fewer colors. “That’s why a lot of my friends would rather listen to Radiolab than read ScientiďŹ c American,â€?

Willihnganz says—�because they literally have a better way of turning a concept into an experience than even a visual infographic does.�

20 close it and you walk around and you’re sort of in disbelief that no one else has been impacted by what just happened—by the story you just read. The same thing happens in audio. If you’re listening, or you take a break and you need to talk to somebody, and you forget that they’re not coming from whatever emotional place you’ve just been vicariously experiencing through the podcast.�

However, La Puma continues, even if that feeling of disbelief or disconnection lasts for a time, it has the potential to become a conversation starter. “I can’t count how many times I’ve started a sentence with, ‘Oh, well I heard on this podcast about this X, Y or Z,’� she says. “And so, I’ve thought about this dichotomy before, actually—the fact that (podcasts are) another excuse not to talk to people.�

But, La Puma adds, she normally listens through headphones only in situations where she would otherwise be keeping to herself anyway—in the car, on a run, or on a bus. And once she is done, after she has taken the voyage inward, La Puma says she is often eager to talk about what she’s learned. “I do bring it back to other people,� she says, “and I do want to share those stories, once I have them.�

Williams agrees. “It’s a really good way to come together and connect with people,� she says, “when you can share these stories.�

Stories, Willihnganz says, are the ultimate point of the project— and not just for their cultural or entertainment value. The Storytelling Project, he says, is about enabling the next generation to leave their mark. “I think, generally, that the person who has the best story tends to win the argument,� Willihnganz says. “My hope is that by giving tools to students who are genuinely interested in making the world a better place—giving them the tools to tell great stories is basically giving them ammunition to create positive change, whether that’s political, environmental, economic or whatever it happens to be. “In a world where discursive power is now a substantial form of power, which wasn’t true for most of human history, having narrative skills is essential to creating change.�

Given the low production costs associated with creating a podcast and the number of popular and interesting topics yet to be covered in depth, it’s hard to envision an end to the growth of the podcasting space—at least not anytime soon. “Anybody with a laptop and a web account, pretty much, can create a podcast,� Willihnganz says. “The constraints that faced earlier media are not present.�

Consider this: One popular podcast—99 Percent Invisible—is all about architecture, while another, the StartUp Podcast, follows Alex Blumberg, former This American Life contributor and co-founder of Planet Money, as he documents his quest to start his own podcasting network.

Willihnganz also sees a strong future for podcasting for many reasons—including his ďŹ rm belief that, unlike reading, there is a propensity for and attraction to oral storytelling hard-wired into every human being. “Reading is really a cognitive process,â€? Willihnganz explains, noting that for the bulk of human history, stories have been conveyed orally—and more often than not with musical accompaniment. “Your brain infers and then creates all of the senses out of the words. Whereas ďŹ lm and radio and other media are really working on your senses.â€?

Willihnganz says podcasts also have the potential to work upon multiple senses. “The irony of it is that it doesn’t tend to be communal,� raising a caveat and questioning whether the podcast will ultimately work to drive people further into personalized, digital bubbles. “Everybody is walking around with earbuds or listening in their car. It has that new distanciated experience, which is the mark of modern culture.�

La Puma and Williams both acknowledge how isolating their handsets can be—and admit that podcasts play a role in sealing them off from the outside world. However, both say that a good podcast or radio program can ultimately connect them to the wider world in a deeper way. “I think it’s comparable to the experience after you ďŹ nish a really good book,â€? La Puma says. “And you

ELCOME TO Silicon Valley’s Koreatown: the portion of El Camino Real that runs through Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. Barbeque, beer and chicken are the heart of the food culture here. Korean fried chicken is known for its double-fried crispy skin, and a few outstanding restaurants have been known to draw crowds when it comes to this popular snack.

Why? It’s tough to master.

Challenging these established chicken joints is newcomer Vons Oven Chicken, a restaurant chain import from Korea, which offers an oven-baked version and a boneless Ssam dish—two healthier options not available at other restaurants.

If any restaurant could benefit from the Chipotle “customize it yourself ” style menu, it would be Vons. Deciding on basic things like size, flavor and cut of chicken can be confusing as the menu lists the information in different sections.

On my two visits here, I have had waitresses explain the menu to me at length, and I will likely need an explanation with every visit. Aside from this, once the order was placed, it came out promptly and we enjoyed

our food in a clean and well lit dining area with mostly white Ikea-style furniture.

A full order of Ssam chicken came with 20 boneless pieces plus two small bottles of beer as part of the package ($28.99). The juicy chicken pieces are flavored with Vons special sauce, a sweet and tangy Asian barbeque flavor. A side of thinly sliced white radish pickled into a pink color is used to wrap the pieces of chicken.

Julienned bell peppers, carrots, cabbage, cucumber and sprouts are decoratively served on the plate. Ssam means wrapped, and after the chicken and vegetables are rolled, it can be dipped in a sweet chili or barbeque sauce. I chose to eat mine plain to enjoy the Vons special sauce on the chicken. Ssam is a healthier and more fanciful take on fried chicken, with a portion size large enough to share.

The vegetables break the monotony of the fried saltiness in the meal.

For the full garlic chicken combo ($19.99) we opted for a mix of drums and wings. The crispy double-fried skin was smothered in a savory sauce that made a great pairing with a side of white rice. These garlicky parts were by far my favorite of the meal.

All chicken orders came with cubes of pickled radish and a side of coleslaw.

The coleslaw was not memorable but did make for a good respite from all the salty chicken. The pickled radish, which is a staple of Korean side dishes, was a little on the sour side and the pink color felt gimmicky. Nonetheless, a pickled radish is still just a pickled radish.

Vons’ clean but generic décor and luminescent lighting are definitely that of a chain restaurant, but the flavors are surprisingly remarkable.

While Vons special sauce is not outstanding, the crispy fried chicken, garlic chicken and Ssam chicken are worth the visit. The portions are large enough for sharing—exactly the point of fried chicken and beers.

Vons is a welcome addition to our unofficial Koreatown.

A half combo of crunchy fried wings and drumsticks ($10.99) came out hot and as advertised. The breading was plain, although not oily. On a separate occasion I had the crispy wings, which were one of the better crispy fried Korean chicken wings I’ve ever had.

Stanford Repertory Theater’s 17th annual summer festival celebrates the work of English playwright Noël Coward. The festival kicks off with a production of Hay Fever, Coward’s 1920 play about an eccentric family who invite a group of guests to their country home only to drive them away with familial infighting. A farcical comedy of manners, Hay Fever is a witty and humorous examination of family life and family love. It will be directed by critically acclaimed and award-winning local actress and dialect coach, Lynne Soffer, and will star Stanford associate professor of acting and classics, Rush Rehm. With enough players to form a basketball team, this 11-piece psychedelic afrobeat band forgoes the laptops, preferring to generate dazzling jams the old fashioned way. Bursting with four horns, and a five piece rhythm section, the fellas leap from one unstoppable groove to the next, kneading together swirling keyboard solos, tasty bass twangs and authentic afro-beats. The band began in 2009, after drummer, Charles Ferguson, returned from a six-month musical sojourn to Ghana and landed in the fertile cultural ground of Brooklyn. THE PRODUCERS Morgan Hill Community Playhouse Sat, 8pm, $16 Sometimes, to make money, you have to make something that really, really sucks. Or so goes the thinking of broke producer Max Bialystock and tame accountant Leo Bloom in Mel Brook’s musical masterpiece. With show-stoppers, like “Springtime for Hitler,” the conniving twosome plan for their show to flop so they can run away with the unspent production money. But things go disastrously, when the musical turns out to be a smashing success that is beloved by the audiences that once reviled Bialystock. Featuring a blonde bombshell, over-the-top absurdity, and plenty of show business in-jokes, the original Broadway show ran for over 2,500 performances and pulled in a record-breaking 12 Tonys. (JF)

It also gave us giant turkey legs, jousting, and some rather ridiculous outfits. This two-day extravaganza celebrates the more base pleasures of that bygone age. There will be professional jousting matches, featuring lance-wielding knights, clad in more 100 lbs of armor, racing at each other atop horses and hitting speeds of over 35 mph. Community Classics SUMMER LOVING Everyone from the young, to the young at heart, can enjoy the timeless tunes performed at this year’s Summer Pops outdoor concert series at San Jose State University.

The free Summer Pops concert series ‘is for everybody,’ organizers say

OWER HALL LAWN at San Jose State University is packed.

In the shade of MLK Library, people sit in lawn chairs, in beach chairs, on blankets and on the unmown grass. Dogs are tethered to leashes and sit on laps, and babies recline in strollers. At the fringes of the crowd, young children are perched atop their parents' shoulders and a pair of toddlers engage in an exuberant bow-legged dance to the 200-year-old bombast of Ludwig van Beethoven.

All have come for the first concert in this year's Target Summer Pops

series, featuring the musicians of Symphony Silicon Valley. Sponsored since its inception in 2008 by the Target corporation, the series aims to bring orchestral music to the masses—to democratize an art form sometimes perceived as elitist. The venue is comfortable, the repertoire is accessible, the musicians and conductor trade their accustomed formal wear for red t-shirts, and, most importantly, the concerts are absolutely free.

“We wanted to take away the cost barrier of attending the symphony,” says series producer Andrew Bales. President and general director of Symphony Silicon Valley, Bales has been at the helm of the summer series since the beginning. “This is for everybody. We perform a range of music that fits every taste, all ages. Nobody feels alienated.

Nobody feels it's not for them.”

In a nod to SSV's heritage, “the first concert of the series always has a

light classical tone,” Bales explains. This year's Summer Pops kicked off with a 75-minute, all-Beethoven program honoring the 30th birthday of the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies, housed on the fifth floor of the King Library.

Conductor Peter Jaffe succeeds in making the material accessible— cracking jokes, providing pointers on understanding and appreciating Beethoven's genius, and keeping tempos brisk on pieces that can sometimes feel ponderous (the famous opening movement of the Fifth Symphony is a perfect example). Guest pianist Stephen Prutsman shows off Beethoven's gentler side in the “Emperor” Piano Concerto, and people leave the performance smiling.

Two concerts remain in this summer's series, both featuring more contemporary tunes.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, acclaimed Bay Area saxophonist Fil Lorenz leads Symphony Silicon Valley in “Big Band Hit Parade,” a program featuring the swing-era hits of the 1930s and '40s. In keeping with the authentic

big band instrumentation of the period, the ensemble for Saturday's show will include no string section, but Bales promises “lots of brass, lots of woodwinds, lots of saxophones.”

The concert will feature “all of those delightful tunes” made famous by Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, the Andrews Sisters, and others, such as “In the Mood,” “Take the 'A' Train,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and more.

It's music that “really reflects that era,” Bales says, “but it's tuneful today. It keeps having these revivals because it's so much fun.”

Then, on Sunday, Aug. 2, the series concludes with a program titled “Hollywood Sound Stage.” Conductor Peter Jaffe returns for an evening of beloved orchestral themes from such blockbuster films as “Gone with the Wind,” “Doctor Zhivago,” “Chariots of Fire,” “Star Wars,” “The Pink Panther,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and the James Bond franchise.

According to Bales, Sunday's program is designed to highlight the emotional power of the symphony orchestra, with “big,lush themes that just wash off the stage and across the audience.” And if you're looking for a great way to get the kids hooked on orchestral music, this is it: There will be music from “Frozen,” as well as a free ice cream social courtesy of San Jose's Treat Ice Cream.

Performances begin at 7pm, but lawn seating is tight by 6:30pm. For the best sound, avoid sitting directly in front of the speakers that flank the stage. Feel free to bring a snack or a whole picnic meal. Bring a light jacket, as the outdoor space can get chilly.

It's worth noting that this year's Summer Pops series is the last that will bear the Target name. With the series well established, the founding corporate sponsor has announced that it will be moving its money to other projects.

Whatever corporate name the series may bear in future years, Bales is adamant about one thing: The Summer Pops will always be free. “The day I have to charge for it is the day I close it,” he says. “This is the largest free music festival in the South Bay. It's about everybody coming, everybody free.”

WHILE ANOTHER take on the 2009 Green Day-penned punk-rock musical, American Idiot, may seem like old wine in a new bottle, the latest production by CMT San Jose is definitely a unique vintage.

For starters, it’s a children’s version of the Tony Awardwinning musical, and no one in the cast is over 20 years old. It is also the first non-professional performance of the show, something director Kevin Hauge is particularly excited about. “It will really be a beautiful production to put in front of our audiences,” he says.

And it is. The set design is impressive, consisting of a multi-storied frame that can be moved and reassembled during the show, with every other surface covered in screens—each blasting video loops of a distorted America. Two skate ramps stand on either side of the stage. With the set taking up much of the vertical space, it almost looks like middle school version of Rent.

American Idiot centers on three alienated teens—Johnny (Andy Turner), Tunny (Dean Marchant), and Will (Shawn Clifford)—as each grows tired of adolescence and seeks change from suburban life. While Will is left to face the reality of a pregnant girlfriend (played by Cristina Oeschger), Johnny and Tunny move on as fast as possible. The former’s heartbreak sends him spiraling into addiction; the latter ships off to war.

The cast is composed mostly of teenagers, and, as such, is not technically a “professional” production. But it still wows. The singing of the girls—notably Oeschger and Katherine Hauge (as Whatsername)—really stands out, adding a polished sheen to an already superb show.

With some crude language, and portrayals of sex and drugs, American Idiot is more adult than most musicals. But any risque content is also key to the success of the show—and never seems out of the place in the rebellious narrative even as it comes from the mouths of babes.

With more than 30 ensemble members, sometimes the show feels rushed, but it’s easy to look past, especially given the size and sophistication of each scene.

While many ambitious, modern musicals have a tendency to meander—even get lost—in the interplay of the characters’ emotions and actions, American Idiot is saved by its roots as a Green Day concept album. The material naturally lends itself to the rock opera format. As such, wherever exposition of plot or character is lacking, the fast-paced, pop-punk steps in to lead the audience along. Factor in the meticulous organization of CMT San Jose, a stunning set design and the impressive talents of the young cast, and you have all of the ingredients for an explosive show.

‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’ fails to raise hackles or thrills

I

T HAS BEEN the source for so many anecdotes that skeptics tend to believe it’s an urban legend. But the Stanford Prison Experiment actually occurred, 44 years ago this summer, in the basement of Jordan Hall on the Stanford University campus.

Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s The Stanford Prison Experiment is the third film in 15 years about Dr. Philip Zimbardo’s infamous psychological experiment.

I’m not counting 2002’s Experiment, when BBC and the University of Exeter tried to reproduce the results

of the study. The new film—the one with Zimbardo’s name on it—spent at least 14 years in development hell.

Zimbardo took a test group and divided them by coin-toss into prisoners and guards. They were herded, three apiece, into three separate “cells”—a makeshift prison constructed out of trio of vacant classrooms. In record time, things got ugly—the “prisoners” rebelled, ripping up their uniforms and tearing up their bunks. The “guards” responded with savagery, with forced exercises and sleep disruptions.

Says prisoner #819, born Peter (Tye Sheridan): “Is it just me or are they taking this way too seriously?” The students sink into their roles, despite the bitterness of actual ex-con (Nelsan Ellis) observing the results: “You brought me here to legitimize

this experiment. This experiment has nothing legitimate about it.” Scheduled for two weeks, the experiment only lasted six days.

I’d speculate that two matters contaminated Zimbardo’s petri dish. The first was cinema. People in a new experience, especially anything to do with breaking the law, tend to reach for their memories of the movies. The imprisoned students behaved in terms of the anti-authoritarian films and books of 1971. In Alvarez’s film, one of the newly fledged jailbirds assumes an Edward G. Robinson drawl. The guards went tough as southern sheriffs. The most brutal, Christopher (Michael Angarano) emulates Strother Martin in Cool Hand Luke—if you’ve never seen the Paul Newman classic, perhaps you heard Willem Dafoe imitate Martin’s evil whine as Rat in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Secondly, trying to keep this film contemporary—the stocking caps the prisoners wear makes them look like corner skateboarders—Alvarez

ignores the elephant in the room, Vietnam. The study was carried out at the behest of the military, though this isn’t mentioned here. The draft board waited to scoop up students who flunked out—a cause of more pressure, and more paranoia, for these students than just the matter of their $15 a day stipend. Alvarez seems mostly interested in the era for the novelty of the clothes: the clown lapels, bushy haircuts and the napkin-sized ties.

Credit Alvarez with a sly sense of humor, manifested in what he allows in Billy Crudup’s performance as Zimbardo. Zimbardo later wrote a flamboyantly titled book about his experiences, The Lucifer Effect. Alvarez seems to have taken Lucifer to heart when shaping the role of the test’s leader. The best thing I’ve ever read about Crudup was a critic calling him “covert.” This wasn’t meant as a compliment, but, to me, it is one—I prefer slippery and shadowy to cut and dried. Crudup smiles thinly through a devilish beard keeping up nocturnal spying on his test subjects (those who sit and watch burn out, too).

Also grimly amusing is the amateur hour-ness of the guards when they start out trying to do their duty of stripping their prisoners and spraying them for lice—you’ve seen greater displays of authority at a fraternity hazing.

The humor wears off. We’re meant to take the hysteria seriously in the name of Abu Ghraib, and shake our heads over the disciplinarians who approve the sadism. The most interesting of them is Albert Malafronte as one Father MacAllister: a sky-pilot on autopilot.

Alvarez, trying to thicken the boiler-room intensity, hired Andrew Hewitt for a soundtrack of synthesizer lowing and electronic chimes. There’s relevance here, but not much more than relevance— the walls close in, but Alvarez and his good cast can’t make this immurement real. Squeezed by dungeon melodramas like Saw on the one side and cruel reality TV shows on the other, The Stanford Prison Experiment can’t raise a hackle

Professor Melancholy THE DESPAIR-INDUCING Irrational Man has some promise to it—things could have been done to make it merely tepid instead of abject, but is Woody Allen capable of doing those things anymore? This crabbed rewrite of Crime and Punishment, with its gimmicky One Step Beyond ending, is the backhanded celebration of a sour man.

Abe (a sleepy, ruminative Joaquin Phoenix) is a supposed luminary in the world of philosophy, come to teach at a small Rhode Island college. Phoenix settles deep within himself, his stomach apparently given an artificial pot by a pregnancy pouch.

He’s said to be brilliant, not that he says anything that proves it (he tells his students about “Jean Paul Sartre’s wonderful comment that ‘Hell is other people’”). He’s seen much of the world and demonstrates his melancholia by swigging from a flask in public, and playing Russian roulette at parties.

He entices a pair of women who probably should know better: the married Rita (Parker Posey) and Jill, a student (Emma Stone), who between this and Aloha is having a cruel year. Abe is turned to plotting murder in an instant by something that he overhears in a coffee shop. This is awkward enough, but the info-dumps from the other characters are

just as strange. Abe: “I was an elevator operator, but I always read Dostoyevsky.”

Clumsiness abounds in the bald way the women in this movie talk to Abe—they don’t converse with him, they stage interviews with him.

Posey, more alluring now Irrational Man than she was as a girl, has a scene, in which she shows R; 97 Mins. up on Abe’s porch with two Camera 7 bottles of single-malt during a heavy rain storm. Why can’t Allen recognize this moment as the really good thing it would be to someone who was a serious existentialist? The answer is that he’s too abstemious to understand the boozing man’s life. And when Posey offers Abe “grass”—i.e. marijuana—it’s one small example of how out of it this once pacesetting director is today.

There are many other sad examples of Allen’s disconnection—in the dated chatter of the students or the blindness of the faculty to Abe’s problems. A funhouse-mirror sequence isn’t bad.

Cinematographer Darius Khondji’s Rhode Island landscapes are fresh. But this film, killed by hasty writing, smells like a contractual obligation.

THE FAR COUNTRY/ WINCHESTER '73

(2015) A singer, a fury, a woman of great extremes and greater relevance, right up to her death in 2003. Liz Garbus’ fascinating documentary is a study of how bipolarity informs art and life. Nina Simone, rising in popularity during the Civil Rights era, was thoroughly radicalized by the end of the 1960s and left the United States to get away from the racism that tore at her heart. Born Eunice Waymon, Simone was trained in classical piano. The daughter of a female preacher, she was performing at an early age. Kept out of the conservatory because of her race, she adopted her stage name so that her mother wouldn’t learn she was performing at Jersey shore night clubs. A hitmaker with her cover of Gershwin’s “I Loves You Porgy,” she was so enraged by the police assaults on the Selma marchers that she composed “Mississippi Goddam”—a 45rpm record that not only faced boycott, but was sometimes returned to the record company snapped in half by southern radio DJs. Simone married an NYPD vice squad cop who became her manager, with predictably turbulent results for their homelife even before the union opened up to admit affairs. The documentary demonstrates why Simone was a one-of-a-kind performer—no one surpassed her in raking an audience with her eyes, or in rousing their souls. The performances here include everything from a nerve-wracked appearance on the Playboy After Dark show to a post-breakdown comeback of surpassing anger.

(1950/1954) Two by Anthony Mann, starring James Stewart. It used to be a sort of joke that the good guy in a western wore a white hat, and the villain wore a black hat. Wearing a battered grey Stetson (a gift from Gary Cooper), Stewart specialized in grey-hat westerns. This befits the talents of his director here; Mann made his mark in film noir as well as the adult western of the 1950s.

The Far Country is an example of the pleasures of the basic Western—the way the open spaces give room for subtle illustration of character and workaday problems. In Alaska, a pair of cowboys try to make some money during the gold rush by driving beef to Skagway, but a corrupt marshal (John McIntire) stops them in their tracks. Walter Brennan is unusually touching as Stewart's saddle pal; Ruth Roman—a starlet of the time—plays the dance-hall gal.

Mann shot this in the Canadian Rockies, around Jasper and Banff.

BILLED WITH Winchester '73. "Man gets gun, man loses gun, man gets gun"—Clive Hirschhorn. James Stewart wins a state of the art rifle at a shooting contest in Dodge City.

But the weapon has a life of its own, ending up in the possession of robbers (Dan Duryea plays one of the gang), Indians and Stewart's own crooked brother (Stephen McNally).

Anthony Mann's Western goes for frontier slices of life: Shelley Winters plays a dance-hall girl; Will "Grandpa Walton" Geer is a sheriff, and two rising stars are on opposite sides of the fence: Rock Hudson as an Indian and Tony Curtis as a soldier. Love Sounds REUNITED AND IT FEELS SO GOOD After a four-year hiatus, Lisa Light and Scott Blonde of The Lovemakers got the band back together.

AKING MUSIC with another person isn’t all that different from making love, according to Lisa Light, half of the Oakland-based dancepunk duo The Lovemakers.

“I think in any musical connection, it’s a love connection— no matter whether you are actually consummating that connection,” Light says, reflecting on her musical partnership with Scott Blonde— the other core member of The Lovemakers—whom she also dated for several years. “It has a love

relationship arc, just like a regular relationship. There is always going to be a reason why you fell in love with someone, regardless of whatever problems you come into.”

Light and Blonde’s romantic relationship didn’t last. In 2005, after just a few years together, they broke up during the recording of their major label debut, Times of Romance. However, they managed to maintain their musical bond for another five years—touring the world and scoring a number of wellreceived singles, including “Prepare for the Fight” and “Love is Dead”— before dissolving the band at the end of 2009.

While the pair haven’t rekindled their romantic relationship, Light says that she and Blonde have

rediscovered the spark that drew them together in the first place.

“We always loved making music together,” Light says, explaining the duo’s decision to reunite last year.

“That was the thing, that carried us through all kinds of shit. I can’t speak for him, but I think I trust his artistic decision making, really highly. And I think that’s a rare find.”

Demonstrating their penchant for cheeky theatrics, The Lovemakers played their first show in four years on Valentine’s Day 2014—reuniting “after an icy four-year hiatus,” according to their Facebook.

If relations had truly become glacial between the two musicians, they certainly thawed quickly. As Light recalls, the decision to do the show came about easily. “I think it was as simple as Scott sending me a text, or giving me a ring or an email out of the blue, and he was like ‘Hey, wanna play a show?’” she says. “It wasn’t a big thing at all.”

Once they got back on stage together, it didn’t take long for the duo to begin plotting more shows and new music. “It was just so fun,” Light says with a chuckle. “I think we just remembered everything we loved about playing live. And it had been long enough that we could move forward with being cordial with each other.”

Since that reunion date in 2014, the band has only played a handful of carefully chosen shows—one of which is coming up this weekend at The Ritz. The Lovemakers will open for San Jose’s indie-dance darlings, The Trims, and will also be joined by the South Bay-bred, alt-blues trio, Fritz Montana and DJ Aaron Axelsen—who as program director for Live 105 and host of the Sunday night new and local music showcase program, Soundcheck, has played a major role in the careers of all three bands.

Light says she is excited for the show, noting that the reunited Lovemakers played with The Trims last year, at the now-shuttered Blank Club, and saying she is eager to check out The Ritz. “We really like San Jose,” Light says. “We’ve always had really awesome fans there.”

Those fans may be pleased to hear that The Lovemakers plan to debut a brand new song this Saturday. It’s called “Lost and Profound,” Light says, and it is one of many new tunes she and Blonde are working on for an upcoming compilation and eventually a proper Lovemakers release.

The song is to be featured on the forthcoming OIM: Vol. II compilation—assembled by OIM Records, the sister company to Oakland Indie Mayhem, an entertainment booking, promotions and production company, focused on elevating East Bay musicians and artists.

“Lost and Profound” will also likely make the cut of a future Lovemakers release, Light says. She isn’t sure whether the as-yet-untitled collection will be an EP or fulllength, though she says the band certainly has enough material for an LP. AUG

LOOSEN UP When sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not playing with The Thermals or All Girl Summer Fun Band, Kathy Foster likes to keep things fast and loose in Hurry Up.

Keeping It Casual THOUGH KATHY FOSTER has long been a Portland denizen, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s originally from Sunnyvale. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mountain View; Sunnyvaleâ&#x20AC;? she clariďŹ es. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I went to De Anza. Sold vintage clothes at the ďŹ&#x201A;ea market.â&#x20AC;?

That was almost two decades ago. Foster has gone on to reach a certain level of indie stardom since her days slinging old stockâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;as the bassist behind one of the biggest bands to come out of the Northwest in the 2000s: the Thermals.

But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not all she is. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got several other projects she keeps busy withâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;breezy indie-pop outďŹ t All Girl Summer Fun Band, duo Hutch & Kathyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and another, called Hurry Up, which is coming to Homestead Lanes on Saturday.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;It just kinda started out as a joke, almost,â&#x20AC;? she says of Hurry Upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s formation, in 2011. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were playing New York and she (Maggie) came to our show.â&#x20AC;? Hurry Up is made up of Foster, her Thermals bandmate Westin Glass, and, Maggie Vale, who worked for the Thermalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; label, Kill Rock Stars, at the time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were talking about how weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the nice people.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; (And we said), â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;We should start a hardcore band!â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Days went on, and the joke didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t die. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were talking about it, but as we were talking about it, we were like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;We should do this.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Three years later, and Hurry Up is no longer a joke. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a fully ďŹ&#x201A;edged band that plays shows and records albumsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;their self-titled debut, released this summer, is currently on Spotify. Kathy is on drums, and Glass is on guitarâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the reverse of their Thermals roles.

And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the draw of Hurry Upâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for Foster, anyway. Even rock stars can feel the squeeze of monotony, and Hurry Up allows her to let loose a little. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Thermals have been kind of a career for me and for us,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So when we play shows, we usually play big places.â&#x20AC;? Hurry Up is a much more casual affair. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to get back to playing small shows. I also wanted to get back to playing drums, â&#x20AC;&#x2122;cause that was my ďŹ rst instrument when I was 16.â&#x20AC;?

The songs are different, too: theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re deďŹ nitely louder, but also, in a way, more relaxed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All the songs that weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve written are just kinda, like, jamming,â&#x20AC;? says Foster. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hurry Up is a little more on-the-spot collaborationâ&#x20AC;Ś songs that are tongue-incheek and whatever feels good, cathartically. It just gets real sweaty and shouty.

The first thing that everyone MUST know and fully understand is the federal “Supremacy Clause.” The Supremacy Clause is the provision in Article Six, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution. Conclusion: We already have Prop. 215 known as the "Compassionate Use Act" here in California which does NOT fly in the face of the CSA for a reason. Remove (amend) the "grey" area from SB 420 to STOP the unlawful vendor model dispensaries from illegally "selling" and "profiteering" from a controlled substance and the transactions. Make a few changes (amend) to the "draft" closed-loop version of the AG Guidelines that have been sitting on The Attorney General’s desk for almost four years now. How do we know how to pronounce proper names in ancient Egyptian? I understand the Rosetta Stone gave us the ability to translate hieroglyphics, but how do we know two birds laying eggs is pronounced “Tutankhamun”?—Dave K., Milford, Connecticut Some are now thinking: who cares how we know this? This is shallow. Fact is, David, we do know, more or less. And how we know is a fascinating tale.

It won’t surprise you to learn our knowledge of how to pronounce Egyptian hieroglyphics begins with the Rosetta Stone. Discovered in 1799, the stone is a black granite-like slab on which a decree by Ptolemy V is inscribed in three languages—hieroglyphics, what’s now called demotic script, and ancient Greek.

The message itself, issued in Memphis in 196 BC, is of little consequence. (Short version: I, Ptolemy V, have done great deeds. Worship me, dudes.) What makes the Rosetta Stone special is that each language conveys an essentially identical message. In other words, the Rosetta Stone is a hieroglyphics cheat sheet.

The two researchers who vied to translate the Rosetta Stone were the French linguist Jean-François Champollion and the English freelance genius Thomas Young. Young had the first breakthrough, discovering that demotic script was actually a cursive version of hieroglyphics.

However, like everyone else at the time, he thought both hieroglyphs and demotic characters were ideographs—that is, each symbol represented a concept, as with the components of Chinese characters, rather than representing only a sound, as with the Latin alphabet. A string of glyphs like “birdsnake-man-river” was assumed to mean something, but no one thought you could pronounce it like a sequence of letters.

Young believed some hieroglyphs were phonetic—specifically, those used to spell out the names of foreign rulers.

Hieroglyphs representing kings and queens were often enclosed in an oblong border called a cartouche, making them easy to spot. The glyphs representing Egyptian rulers’ names were believed to be purely symbolic, not phonetic. But since foreign names had no local equivalent, they could only be expressed phonetically, suggesting the glyph strings in those cartouches had to be pronounceable.

This proved to be the key to decoding.

The Rosetta scripts encoded different languages. But proper names would presumably be pronounced similarly regardless of language.

Young tried to assign phonetic values to the cartouche glyphs, but translated only six before giving up. The task

fell to Champollion, who made two breakthroughs.

The first was comparing the demotic characters signifying Ptolemy on the Rosetta Stone to those representing Cleopatra in a separate example of demotic. He found characters corresponding to the Greek equivalents of P, L, T, O, and E in each name. In other words, demotic characters didn’t just symbolize concepts; they spelled out how words were pronounced. (As you may have guessed, in Greek the P in Ptolemy isn’t silent.)

Champollion’s next brainstorm was more of a leap. First he identified the hieroglyphs corresponding to various demotic characters. Then he took the hieroglyphs for Ptolemy on the Rosetta Stone and compared them to those on an obelisk, in a cartouche known to signify Cleopatra. Sure enough, he found the P, L, O, and E hieroglyphs exactly where he predicted. What about the T? Champollion deduced he’d found a hieroglyphic homophone for this letter—that is, another symbol having the same pronunciation, as with our F and PH. Champollion set about finding other correspondences between Greek letters and hieroglyphs. In 1822, he found noncartouche-enclosed hieroglyphs spelling out “Ra-mes-ses” (i.e., the name Ramses, used by numerous pharaohs). Bingo!

Champollion’s work wasn’t confirmed until 1866, when another multilingual text was discovered. But he’d figured it out.

The ancient Egyptians weren’t the only ones with a glyphic language—the ancient Mayans had one too. Early Spanish explorers attempted to record the Mayan calendar symbols in Spanish, producing a potentially Rosetta-like transliteration, but made a fatal error and got lost.

Translation of Mayan glyphs made no real progress until 1952, when Russian linguist Yuri Knorosov pointed out the critical wrong turn in early attempts: the Spaniards assumed each Mayan glyph represented just one sound, whereas really each represented a syllable, or set of sounds, similar to Japanese kana writing.

The ingenuity of linguists in matching up sounds notwithstanding, without some Rosetta-type document or connection to a living language, translation of dead tongues is close to impossible.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): "I always liked side-paths, little dark back-alleys behind the main road—there one finds adventures and surprises, and precious metal in the dirt." The character named Dmitri Karamazov makes that statement in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov. And now I'm thinking that you might like to claim his attitude as your own. Just for a while, you understand. Not forever. The magic of the side paths and back-alleys may last for no more than a few weeks, and then gradually fade. But in the meantime, the experiences you uncover there could be fun and educational. I do have one question for you, though: What do you think Dmitri meant by "precious metal in the dirt"? Money? Gold? Jewelry? Was he speaking metaphorically? I'm sure you'll find out.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): "Sometimes the road less traveled is less traveled for a reason," says comedian Jerry Seinfeld. His implication is that rejecting traditional strategies and conventional wisdom doesn't always lead to success. As a professional rebel myself, I find it painful to agree even a little bit with that idea.

But I do think it's applicable to your life right now. For the foreseeable future, compulsive nonconformity is likely to yield mediocrity. Putting too much emphasis on being unique rather than on being right might distract you from the truth. My advice: Stick to the road more traveled.
