NSIDE South San Jose’s sprawling new Village Oaks development—billed as Santana Row 2.0—MOD Pizza offers a neighborhood vibe in a sea of franchise dining options.

Although it’s a chain restaurant with more than 40 locations across the country, MOD Pizza, which specializes in make-it-your-way creations, strives for the feel of a local joint. The decor features a wall collaged with photos of customers, employees and San Jose landmarks such as the City Hall Rotunda and Tower Hall at San Jose State University. A 3-D “SAN JOSE” sign built from soldered sheets of metal decorates another of the room’s panels. Exposed wooden beams, planked tables, aluminum stools with seats that resemble tree stumps and a playlist of ’80s pop and ska give the place an atmosphere aimed at avoiding some of the usual corporate schtick. Ordering a pizza is easy and customizable. Customers start with plain dough (gluten-free options are available) in either a Mini (6”, $4.87), Mod (11”, $7.87) or Mega (11” double crust, $10.87). About a dozen pizza creations are available that can be customized, or diners can start from scratch and build a pizza to their exact taste. A major plus: no additional charges for toppings. In assembly line fashion, employees build the pizza. Despite a throng of customers, pizzas are put together by cheerful and chatty employees. The pizzas are cooked just a few at a time in a gas-fired oven that reaches up to 800 degrees, resulting in a crisp, slightly charred crust typical of gourmet pizzerias. The Maddy classic cheese pizza is a winner, but what’s the point of building your own pizza if a single topping is all that’s desired? For my base, I started with the Jasper, which comes with red sauce, mozzarella, mushrooms and spicy Italian sausage. To that already winning combination I added red onions, roasted garlic cloves, parmesan cheese and a handful of fresh arugula after it cooked in the oven. The pizza’s toppings were a delicious combination, with the flavors of sweet and salty roasted garlic, sweet red onions and spiced sausage most prevalent. I was blown away by how crisp the dough was. It had a flaky, almost Saltine-like quality that may not please all pizza purists, but for fast casual I was pleasantly surprised. From scratch, I built my attempt at a white pizza with white sauce, a blend of cheeses, roasted garlic cloves and mushrooms. The resulting pizza was a flavor blast of subtly sweet garlic and salty cheese. MOD carries a collection of craft beer in bottles as well as on draft from Northern California breweries such as North Coast Brewing Company, Pyramid Brewery and Lost Coast Brewery. Euro Grill’s New Menu

INCE ITS establishment several years ago, Euro Grill has gained a small but growing following in Santa Clara. From the same owners as the Euro Market a few doors down, Euro Grill serves Balkan cuisine in a personal setting on the first floor of a converted 19th Century wooden home. On my many visits here, the same gentleman dressed in a casual track jacket often greets and serves customers with comforting attention. Balkan cuisine is influenced by the countries that comprise Southeast Europe, and Euro Grill had been delivering consistently impressive lamb and beef ghoulash, sarma stuffed cabbage rolls, grilled meats, and fresh baked breads in its first years. Nearly all dishes came with hefty portions and outstanding quality that drew me back for multiple visits. Every meal here was as satisfying as the last. About a month ago, I walked into the restaurant for lunch and asked how long the wait would be. With frank honesty, the same gentleman who greeted me on previous visits said the kitchen was backed up and they could not serve me for lunch. This was the first sign of changes afoot. The menu has since been pared down to grilled meats and bread, and cold salads that require no cooking. Gone were the ghoulash, sarma, cufte (meatballs in tomato sauce) and burek (meat pie). Basically any dish requiring skill beyond grilling meat and putting it on bread was off the menu. The waiter confirmed that the restaurant lost its chef a few months ago. I proceeded to order the grilled stuffed mushrooms ($7.99), the gyro ($8.99), which had increased in price by a dollar since the last visit and no longer came with a side of fries, and the Mijesano Meso platter ($11.99). Complimentary fresh baked bread was no longer offered. The stuffed mushrooms described as filled with creamy cheese were, in fact, filled with sour cream and topped with sprinkles of shredded packaged cheese. At nearly $8 for 10 standard sized mushrooms, they were overpriced. Luckily, the gyro that came with thinly sliced sausages, tomatoes, romaine lettuce and yogurt sauce inside fresh baked bread was just as tasty as before. The Mijesano Meso platter is a large sandwich filled with a sampler of five cevapi sausages, two spicy sausages and one chicken skewer. The chicken was perfectly tender and the sausages were well-seasoned as usual. Sour cream, chopped fresh onions and a scoop of marinated pepper paste served on the side enhanced the entrée’s flavors. Once a rising star, Euro Grill is quickly losing its hard-earned reputation. While the chef’s departure has not affected the attentive customer service, welcoming ambiance and quality of the food still on the menu, the lack of home-cooked dishes with complex flavors has made the eatery yet another sandwich place, albeit one that serves hearty portions of delicious meat on fluffy fresh bread. — Ngoc Ngo EUROGRILL 980 El Camino Real, Suite 100, Santa Clara. 408.244.9745 or eurogrillsantaclara.com.

Then you hear and feel the noise, slowly undulating through the space, hissing and vibrating in 12-channel audio—a familiar yet mysterious presence. Welcome to Kate Lee Short's The Oculus, one of several sound explorations included in “Hear This!,” a new exhibit at the Palo Alto Art Center. “Gone are the days when you’d walk into a museum and expect only paintings and drawings,” curator Lisa Ellsworth says. “This show is really pushing the boundaries of what Hear This! is artistic media.” Jan 17-Apr 12, Free Short, an Oakland-based artist, says she is “interested in Palo Alto Art Center dislocating people’s senses so that they can experience that cityofpaloalto.org/ space in between knowing something and trying to figure gov/depts/csd/ out what that something is.” artcenter According to Short, putting together the wall of speakers was certainly a discovery process for her. She built The Oculus out of the 275 speakers—salvaged from free bins and thrift shops, or donated by friends. Once she had amassed her collection, she started stacking and the piece began to take shape. “It got ‘Tetris-y’ and the piece evolved from there,” she says of the work, which was first built in 2012. Viewers/listeners often take pleasure in recognizing individual speakers, she says, helping them form a connection to the piece. “I hear people talking about, ‘Oh yeah, my mom had that,’ remembering the roles speakers had in their own lives,” she says. In the past, Short has invited other artists to create audio works to play through The Oculus, including fellow Oaklander Chris Duncan, who also contributes work to “Hear This!” in the form of a sitespecific, amplified wire wall. “It’s exciting that we get to do these pieces together in the same room. It’s really fun,” she says. Petaluma artist Mark Malmberg’s Pink Sky Dragonfly is a kinetic mobile. Responsive to light, it jerks, chirps, spins. “It has its own little personality,” Ellsworth says. Julianne Swartz’s electrical tapestry, woven with wire and speakers, emits a soundtrack, while wooden boxes whisper and mumble. “I’m curious to see how visitors respond to it and participate with it,” Ellsworth says. “If visitors walk away reflecting on how we live with sound, and a heightened awareness about the possibilities of sound and how it influences and connects us, all the better.”—Karla Kane

Her most recent EP, Yes! is an outlier in this musical era of increasing digitalization. With her latest album, LaCour has crafted an intimate, poignant, and surprisingly diverse musical statement, even though the only instrument featured (other than her voice) is a celloâ€”played by Misha Khalikulov. The duo forged a partnership through an artistsâ€™ collective in Oakland. â€œI thought maybe it would be fun to perform with a cellist,â€? she says, â€œI love the instrument. It was intended to be a one-off thing for fun.â€? Their EP is harmonious and beautiful. LaCourâ€™s voice swaysâ€”one moment propelled by clear emotion, the next receding into a near whisper that quakes with vulnerability. Khalikulov plucks, slaps and strokes his cello, creating an evolving wave of sound for LaCour to ride. If Joni Mitchell is waking up to the sound of a fresh drizzling rain, then LaCour is stepping through the door the moment the sun peeks out. Itâ€™s the raw cool of folk warmed with resting embers of soul. â€œIâ€™m a very organic person, Iâ€™m a minimalist,â€? she says. â€œItâ€™s my personal pace, I like small gatherings as opposed to big parties.
