HEN I was in high school, San Jose had two flea markets.

One of them, the

Berryessa market, brought in four million visitors a year and was listed in the top ten California tourist attractions, behind Disneyland and Hearst Castle.

I worked at the smaller Capitol Flea Market, 1,000 vendors and 10,000 shoppers three times a week in the city that provided cheap labor for Silicon Valley’s high-tech companies. Secretaries, factory line workers, janitors, bus boys, drivers, haulers, lifters, painters … they all lived in San Jose and drove up Highway 101 to work at places like Hewlett Packard, Apple and Sun Microsystems, or to work as domestic help for the new tech millionaires.

For most people the flea market was a bustling marketplace filled with new immigrants looking for a bargain. But for me it was high school, college and grad school wrapped into one old, dirty, dusty drive-in movie theater.

Over time I would ascend the ranks and eventually run the whole operation, but for now I was 16,

The establishment maintains much of a lounge feel with low tables and dimmed lighting. A colorful, backlit full bar dominates the back wall. An empty Japanese whisky bottle, serving as a vase for a stalk of bamboo, decorates each table, a reference to Nomikai’s use of Asian spirits such as Japanese whisky and soju.

My favorite cocktails are often whiskey-based but I had not yet enjoyed Japanese whisky. (Traditionally, the Japanese style closely follows the style of single malt Scotch whisky and therefore the spelling drops the “e,” unlike American-style whiskeys.) Japanese whisky appears frequently on Nomikai’s cocktail list, in drinks such as the Japanese Old Fashioned, which was noticeably smooth without being overly sweet. It did have that earthy smokiness you could expect from a Scotch.

Nomikai features a Whiskey Wednesday, with specials on select whisk(e)ys.

The best way to enjoy Nomikai is in the company of several friends, as the menu lends itself to ordering several dishes to nosh on with drinks. Between myself and another friend, we started with the garlic bread and Japanese eggplant spread, sweet chili chicken wings and crispy pork belly with ginger jalapeno. Tuesday through Saturday Nomikai offers happy hour from 5:30 to 8:30pm, when all small plates are $5.

Moving on from the bold Japanese Old Fashioned to the more refreshing options, the Ringo and Mugi Mule—both featuring ginger beer—were excellent choices. The Mugi Mule was a refreshing spin on the traditional Moscow Mule with Yokaichi Mugi soju, vodka, house made ginger syrup, ginger beer and lime.

Sour and sweet, the Ringo was a refreshing mix of ginger beer, apple and lemon juices, ginger syrup and whisky. Our appetizers arrived on a wooden board as we sipped and traded cocktails. The wings were crispy, with a sticky coating that was sweet and salty. The segments of pork belly came with a simple garnish of ginger jalapeno, for an unexpected blend of spicy, sweet and savory.

Also perfect for sharing over rounds of cocktails are the specialty pizzas at Nomikai. Arriving fresh from the oven in a baking sheet, the creations range from a simple trio of mushrooms to the rich and bold flavors of Chinese sausage with jalapenos, roasted garlic and soft-cooked egg. The pizza had some noticeable heat with the jalapenos. It was deliciously paired with the roasted garlic and sausage.

nce the King of Beers, Budweiser has lost ground to the craft craze. Thankfully. A study by Bud’s parent company confirmed the trend: 44 percent of 21- to 27-year-old drinkers in the US have never tried a Bud. For the growing number of beer drinkers who prefer taste to bulk, Kerri CarderMcCoy is their sherpa. The Millbrae native began offering brewery tours last month through her company, Bay Area Ale Trails, with another event scheduled for Saturday. Metro sat down with Carder-McCoy to learn more about Ale Trails.

WHERE’D YOU GET THE IDEA FOR THIS TOUR? It started with a trip to Thailand last Christmas. Our Kaiser doctor told us to avoid the water and drink beer the whole time. Seriously, it’s safer. Plus, they don’t have ice cubes. So yeah, I’ll take a cold beer over warm water. Anyway, my wife and I were on the beach, sipping on Chang beer and started chatting and daydreaming about how we could stay there forever. We wondered what the beer scene was like in Thailand. That conversation morphed into me starting a beer blog.

I began exploring the beer scene in my own backyard, in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. Then, last spring, I started this tour company.

WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN THE LOCAL CRAFT BEER SCENE? More alcohol. A lot of what I’m seeing is higher alcohol content. A lot of double IPAs, super hoppy beers. For a lot of beer-makers: the hoppier, the better. Of course, not everybody is a fan of the bitter brews. But we’re also starting to see a lot more varietals of hops, which gives you a huge range of flavor profiles. Not all hops are that bitter. Of course, right now we’re also going to see a lot of the holiday beers, more stouts and dark brews.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WINE DRINKERS AND BEER DRINKERS? Beer drinkers have more fun! But really, I like anyone who drinks beer. We’re not as prim and proper. We’re chill, lighthearted. A lot of beer drinkers are getting more experimental, too. The trend is definitely moving away from huge producers. People’s flavor palates have opened up, they’re more explorative.

I’ve had people who only drank Bud Light come on my tour and experience so many new flavors and styles. I show them that, even if you’re just into the light lagers, there are so many more out there. There was one guy who told me, “Dude, I tried that lager you recommended, I loved it.

THE SAP CENTER. That hallowed arena where, most days, one can watch freakishly strong men travel at frightening velocity across an expanse of ice—carried forth upon their bladeshoes, as they vie with wooden paddles for possession of a small rubber saucer, and intermittently break out into mutually-agreed-upon pugilistic bouts.

And yet, here I am in the Shark Tank, watching a very different kind of sport.

Or, to be more precise, eSport. You know, a video game.

It’s Dec. 7, the final day of the San Jose Intel Extreme Masters League of Legends tournament—a contest with a $25,000 prize and a spot in the upcoming IEM World Championship in Katowice, Poland on the line. Hometown favorites Cloud 9 are about to face the tournament’s dark (and mystical) horse: Unicorns of Love.

With the $25,000 and a world tournament berth on the line, things are tense.

But things can get far more competitive than this.

The IEM World Championship tournament’s purse—$65,000 last season—is chump change compared to LoL’s World Cup equivalent: The League of Legends World Championship boasts a $1 million first place prize. More than 27 million people tuned in this past September to watch the tournament, held in a sold-out stadium in Seoul, South Korea. By contrast, only 23.5 million tuned into the last World Series.

So, just what the hell is League of Legends? Well, it’s one of the most popular eSports titles in the world. What’s an eSport? It’s a term that refers to the competitive (and often professional) gaming sphere, where teams of players stand to make big bucks in large tournaments.

In LoL, two teams of five face-off across a virtual map populated by various monsters, with the ultimate goal of destroying their opponents’ base. Each player controls a character called a “champion,” which they use to kill opponents.

There are 121 different “champions” to choose from—each with particular powers suited to certain roles and play styles—plus around 300 in-match items to buy. With so many options, the strategy can get complex and the accompanying jargon confusing for the uninitiated.

Despite their compelling come-from-behind momentum, Cloud 9 ends up routing the Unicorns of Love, beating them 3-0 in a best of five set.

“They’re very good players,” Cloud 9 team member Hai Lam says of his vanquished opponents, in a quote that could have been ripped, word-for-word, from a post-game, locker-room debriefing. “They obviously they haven’t played as long as us... So we have a lot more experience in when to do things and what to do. We just have a lot better team cohesion and game strategy when it comes down to it.”— Stephen Layton

AUSTRALIAN FILMMAKER Jennifer Kent’s sensitive, yet terrifying, The Babadook has the ring of truth. It has a realistic explanation for everything that happens, up until the point where reality starts bending, curving into a finely built finale that transforms the horror into metaphor. Amelia (Essie Davis) was widowed by a car crash on the day her son Samuel was born. As the boy’s 7th birthday approaches, the air in their dark house is starting to get a little thick. Amelia works in an old folks’ home, and the routine tasks are becoming too much for her. Even after these many years, she’s caught in the fork of deep grief: if people ask how she’s doing, she bristles. If they don’t ask about her feelings, she gets furious.

Her relationship with Samuel (the remarkable Noah Wiseman) is not quite in sync: the little boy is three-quarters in a fantasy world, and when he hugs her, he’s maybe a little too ardent for his mother’s liking. And he’s in trouble at school. One day, a children’s book titled “Mr Babadook” turns up on the porch.

Samuel reads it, and is obsessed about the

monster in it, a top-hatted, knife-fingered boogeyman. Amelia at last examines the book: a grotesque pop-up storybook that describes what Babadook is going to do to her…or rather, what it proposes to make The Babadook her do.

Kent knows that R; 93 min. maternal madness Bluelight Cinema, Cupertino is a subject for prime cinematic terror, and Davis conveys that terror with a power worthy of Cate Blanchett.

Either placidly succumbing to insanity with heavy eyelids and a half-smile, or roaring, caught in its vortex, the brave Davis is completely convincing. We can tell what Kent has studied, because of the TV the sleepless Amelia watches: unnerving clips from Méliès to Mario Bava. But this movie isn’t derivative—it’s in good company with The Exorcist or Carrie. Kent builds the foundations well on this story, before she turns the screws; the pity we have for this lonely pair makes the coming of the Babadook all the more frightening.— Richard Von Busack

Above Average HEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S BEEN PLAYING music for 25 years, recorded three full-length records at the world-famous Sun Studios in Memphis, and he has more than 130,000 views on YouTube. Still, David Brookings is far from a household name. But heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cool with that. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not famous, but that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean people havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bought the albums, and it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hey man, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great song,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Brookings says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think anybody should be doing this to be famous, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m certainly not.â&#x20AC;?

Brookings, who will play a semi-unplugged set with his pop-rock band The Average Lookings at Streetlight Records in San Jose this Saturday, says he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t set out to be a superstar. Growing up in Richmond, Va., he began writing songs when he was 10 years old. Back then, he says, he never thought about whether his music would make him a star: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always said I would do this whether I was famous or not.â&#x20AC;?

For the 35-year-old San Jose transplant, music is a passion. He made that quite clear with the series of YouTube postings he made from July of 2010 to February of 2011, in which Brookings posted cover versions of all 209 Beatles songs in 209 consecutive days.

He says he did it in part to draw people to his original material. But Brookings is also a huge Beatles fan and watching him perform the entirety of the Fab Fourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s catalog it is plain that he just enjoys singing a good pop song.

In fact, perhaps the only thing he enjoys more than playing a catchy tune is writing one. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ tting then that Brookings would be so proud of his latest release, 2013â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s The Maze. Comprising 11 compact and jangling gems, The Maze, is a veritable clinic in pop songwriting.

Consider the sort of “slackers” who watch TV—like the late crime writer Elmore Leonard, who was awarded the National Book Foundation’s 2012 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. After a long day working on one of his 45 novels, he’d be on his couch watching “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune.” As my boyfriend (his researcher of 33 years) put it, “you could say, ‘Elmore, the Martians just landed on your tennis court,’ and he’d say, ‘Wait! It’s Final Jeopardy!’”

Sure, your girlfriend could be “doing so many other things,” like staring blankly into a bookcase or tossing back four martinis and passing out on the sofa with an olive in her ear.

But TV-watching is the brain vacation that works for her. It’s only “sad” if her boyfriend remains too entrenched in his beliefs to respect a TV-watching woman. Unfortunately, once disgust for a partner is afoot in a relationship, the thing is probably shot. Though, rather incredibly, “the idiot box” can help a person be a smarter decision-maker at work. Scientists have yet to discover any similarly unbelievable lowbrow cures for ailing romantic partnerships.

But this is nothing to be boohooing about. Engineering professor Barbara Oakley explains in her neurosciencebased book on learning, “A Mind for Numbers,” that our brain has two modes of problem-solving that it shifts between.

There’s the “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to work we go!” focused mode and the resting-state, brain-in-the-La-Z-Boy diffuse mode. Focused-mode thinking is what we’re using when we put our attention on a problem or on learning, writing, or memorizing. It’s direct and intense, like shining a flashlight on a raccoon.

But your brain is not a Denny’s and should not be expected to be “always open!” In fact, Oakley explains, you will be far more efficient if you take breaks and let your diffuse mode take over. This is the subconscious processing that goes on when you turn your focus away from a problem, like by taking a walk, cleaning the gerbil cage, or—horrors!—watching something dopey on TV. And while the focused mode can get you roadblocked into an overly narrow set of potential solutions, diffuse mode involves big-picture thinking that draws on a wide range of neural networks.

This means that afterward, when you refocus on the problem, answers come more easily, and sometimes you experience
