ESTAROSSA WINERY hosts a grand culinary affair on Sunday, September 28 at the historic Novitiate grounds in Los Gatos.

Tickets for Testarossa Wine & Food were originally offered to winery club members in mid July and available later for public sale in August, but went fast. The sold-out culinary celebration will feature chefs from 17 local restaurants, including ﬁve Michelin-starred chefs. Testarossa’s own executive chef, Dave Page, will also be a part of the event. Distinguished single Michelinstar chefs include Peter Armellino of the Plumed Horse, Dmitry Elperin from The Village Pub, Jarad Gallagher of Chez TJ and Peter Rudolph of Madera. Other acclaimed chefs include Le Papillon’s Scott Cooper, Nick Difu of Nick’s Next Door, Hult’s Jose Esparza, Shingo Katsura of Cin-Cin, Chanan Kamen of Osteria Coppa, Anthony Jimenez from The Table and Wayne Hashman of The Wine Cellar. David Kinch of two Michelin-starred Manresa will be a featured chef and will also participate in one of the event’s several gourmet seminars. Testarossa Wine and Food will showcase chefs at 18 different food stations and 12 wine stations pouring Testarossa wines. The event also features several gourmet seminars (seminars require an additional ticket purchase). Seminars will explore both food and wine topics. Chef David Kinch and Avery Ruzicka, baker/partner in the Manresa Bread Project will lead a seminar on the revolution taking place in the world of ﬁne artisan bread baking. Bill Brosseau, Testarossa’s director of winemaking, and Jeff Bareilles, wine and beverage director of Manresa will join winemaker Gary Pisoni in a vertical tasting of Pisoni and Testarossa’s collaborative work. “This is a dream come true for Diana and I,” says Rob Jensen, founder and proprietor of Testarossa Winery. “We have always wanted to do a high-caliber culinary event at the winery along the lines of Pebble Beach Food & Wine and with the help of our partner restaurants and our new chef, we hope to do just that.” Rob and Diana Jensen started Testarossa in their garage in 1993. The name Testarossa, Italian for red head, comes from Rob’s nickname while studying abroad in Italy. Recognized as California’s oldest operating winery, Testarossa operates on what was once the Sacred Heart Novitiate, where jesuits produced wines for sacramental use. Today, Testarossa produces wine with winegrowers in appellations such as the Santa Lucia Highlands, Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains. The tasting room is open daily and the newly added Wine Bar 107 operates Wednesday through Friday. Next up, the winery hosts a four-course luncheon celebrating the release of 2012 Brosseau Vineyard Chardonnay and 2012 Brosseau Vineyard Pinot Noir. HE CONSTRUCTION of a bowl of ramen—noodles, broth and a few toppings—seems a simple enough thing. But the composition of the broth and what gets added to it make for many possiblities, and the ﬂavors can get complex in a hurry. To celebrate this versatile—and it seems now, almost universally loved— dish, the Ramen Yokocho Association presents the next Ramen Yokocho Festival in San Jose. The association, which has hosted events in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco, hosts the festival Oct. 3-5 and Oct 10-12 at the San Jose Convention Center. This festival of noodles features ramen from the U.S. and Japan, particularly the latter country’s ramen “hotspots” Tokyo and Osaka. HREE DEGREES restaurant in Los Gatos, located at the Toll House Hotel, is the latest Silicon Valley restaurant scheduled to host a beer dinner. Three Degrees features offerings from Paso Robles’ Firestone Walker Brewing Company. This beer-and-food pairing event on Oct. 3 continues the popular trend throughout Silicon Valley. The ﬁve-course dinner at Three Degrees Restaurant will be prepared by executive chef Albert Nguyen-Phuoc and includes such dishes as oktail pot au feu paired with a DBA, an English Pale Ale; roasted pork tenderloin paired with a saison and Belgian chocolate truffles with an oatmeal stout to wash it down, Both the chef and a knowledgeable representative from Firestone Walker will be on hand to introduce each course. Interestingly, this beer dinner will be the ﬁrst and last at Three Degrees Restaurant before extensive remodeling will start later this fall. Eye of the Beholder The “art” from which Art takes its name is less a painting than a blank canvas. And while the stark white work sits figuratively and literally at the center of Yasmina Reza’s 1994 play, the production isn’t really so much about the piece, as it is about the way three friends respond to it and to each other over the course of of the play. Art, which kicks of City Lights Theater Company’s 2014-15 season, focuses on the relationships of a trio of friends—Serge, Marc and Yvan. After Serge brings home a very pricy all-white painting, the friendship is tested, as the work becomes a mirror through which each of the three characters examine themselves. “I think this play is rather about the art of friendship than the art of appreciating art,” says Virginia Drake, director of the City Lights production. The artwork in Art serves as a catalyst— Art pushing the three men to reevaluate their relationships with one another. “This piece of art kicks the discussion Sep 18-Oct 19, $17-$35 of that friendship in gear.” City Lights Theater Company, San Jose Drake says the play bounces from “wildly funny” to cltc.org revealing something “very scary in terms of relationships.” In a world of polarities, Art asks whether true respect and friendship can survive clashing opinions. Art was especially a pleasure for Drake to direct because of how the characters could “absorb the personality of the actors” just as much as the other way around. The writing “generates a particular set of textures, colors and personality that many plays don’t allow,” she says. “It’s the dialogue; it’s so funny. It heightens the energy and people go nutty.” Art has a remarkably simple setup: three characters, a piece of art in the center of each person’s apartment, and a lot of back-and-forth banter intertwined with short monologues. It’s what Drake calls a “stark piece” that isn’t about the extraneous— “it’s all about them and that tightens and intensifies it.” Drake abandoned the traditional spotlighted monologue scenes and chose to instead have the characters stay in the setting of the room they are in and break out to address the audience. The cast has a raucous personality, prone to riffing on their own play and presenting whimsical “what if” scenarios. Drake last week even likened one rehearsal to “directing third graders”—which she meant as a compliment. It’s a fitting ensemble for a play that’s just as comedic as it is philosophical. The director has encountered works of art similar the one in the play. Drake notes that these abstract (or to some—absurd) pieces elicit an incredible spectrum of reaction. For Drake, exploring art is about wondering what other see. “It’s wanting to have that person’s eyes to try to find out what that person is liking,” she says. “I want to know.”

POSTERIOR MOTIVES Carla Juri plays a teen who has some unusual obsessions revolving around her derriere and unorthodox hygiene practices.

Butthurt Essentially benign and yet one of the grossest movies ever made, David Wnendt’s Wetlands adapts a scandalous (and apparently very episodic) German semiautobiographical coming of age novel. YA lit means a whole different thing over there, God bless them. It’s a series of daydreamy anecdotes in the life of Helen (Carla Juri). She’s spending some down time in the hospital; prone to the piles already, Helen gave herself a rectal injury from shaving herself too fast. After surgery, she malingers in her private hospital room. Her big aim is to pick up a shy male nurse named Robin (Christoph Letkowski). The lolling around gives her a chance to review the events of her life—the rise and fall of her friendship with her (menstrual)blood-sister Corrina (Marlen Kruse), her rejection of the antiseptic dictates of her nervous Catholic mom—and ﬁnally, the big reveal of how disturbed Helen's mother is. Helen’s deepest wish is for her parents to get back together. Wanting absolute freedom for herself, she feels that her parents ought to ﬁll their trad role, and that’s evidence of a conventional strain this movie barely conceals. So is the winner-take-everything happy ending. Juri plays Helen as a sweet-spirited, scrubby Ann-Margret-ish imp—curly haired and

with chipped fingernail enamel. When nude, she looks like photographer R. Kern’s streety models, complete with the little bruises everywhere. She’s not too messed up to flirt—teasing Robin, she asks “Could these eyes lie?” The Kodachrome colors are garish—lurid Wetlands magentas and ultraviolet nightlights in her mother's Not rated; 105 min kitchen. When Helen visits Opens Fri. a brothel (she’s a customer) the interiors are so crimson it’s amazing it doesn’t blind the whores. The filth level may be extremely high but it's not unprecedented. The opening, when Helen rolls down a street leading to the Filthiest Toilet in Germany, recalls Trainspotting; when she sexes the family dinner, the confessions of Alexander Portnoy come to mind. There’s an echo of Lena Dunham in Helen’s self-abasement. Merrill “Peaches” Nisker is on the soundtrack (they could have gone with Karen Finley’s “Tales of Taboo”), as is Thee Headcoatees’ “Cum in My Mouth,” recorded about a quartercentury ago…when even the provocations have a pedigree, it’s hard to get excited as it is to get outraged. —Richard von Busack

My Generation DJ SNAKE, who along with Lil John, created one of the most unabashedly, antagonistic party anthems in recent memory, will be headlining the Beyond Wonderland electronic music festival this Saturday. That song, “Turn Down for What,” exhorts listeners to keep the volume pumped, both literally and figuratively—as “turned up,” or “turnt,” in the parlance of our times, has become slang for getting wasted, reckless and otherwise partying hard. But if last year’s Beyond Wonderland event was any indication, there will be plenty of Mountain View residents who will wish the festival would turn down. According to a report by Beyond Wonderland the Mercury News, locals made around 130 complaints about noise—many of them related to the deep bass Sep 19-20, $139-$246 produced by electronic acts like DJ Snake and Kaskade Shoreline Amphitheatre, who will be performing this year. Yet, as parents wring their hands over the perceived threat of EDM and as homeowners shake their fists at their rattling their windows, the genre is only growing in popularity. EDM, it seems, isn’t going away. And that’s understandable. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that establishment critics and parents everywhere were scowling and disapproving of hip-hop. Before that there was punk. And before the older Baby Boomers were finding the sounds of The Sex Pistols too caustic, their parents were telling them that real music was made by composers and performed by symphonies or big bands. Mark Applebaum, an associate professor of composition and theory in the department of music at Stanford, teaches a course titled “Rock, Sex and Rebellion.” Applebaum says that it’s not uncommon for hysteria to erupt around certain genres of music and the styles, philosophies and other cultural tenets that attach themselves to a given scene—especially when that scene is the new, younger kid on the block. In fact, such hysteria is cyclical and to be expected. “I have a sense that every generation hopes they die before they get old,” Applebaum says. “And then they get old, and then they are somehow disenfranchised and they don’t recognize cultural currents that are so important to younger generations. For that group it’s deeply alienating and troubling to see a younger group who care about things that are different than those things that they cared about. It is simultaneously a puissant reminder of their own morality. That can’t be fun.”—Nick Veronin

You printed a letter from a guy who doesnâ€™t want to be a father and wanted to know how to be sure his girlfriend is on birth control. You said, â€œThe single worst form of birth control is trusting that a woman â€Ś longing for a babyâ€? is taking hers (with whether sheâ€™s ethical being a â€œmitigating factorâ€?). But you forgot to tell him the magic word -- abstinence! In addition to preventing pregnancy, it also guarantees that you wonâ€™t get STDs or suffer the physically or psychologically damaging effects of premarital sex. Also, whereâ€™d you get the idea that women are conniving to get a bun in the oven without informing their partner? Right, weâ€™re all baby-hungry, unethical hopeful breeders. â€”Saved Myself I like to offer â€œDonâ€™t have sex!â€? as a form of practical adviceâ€”usually just as Iâ€™m getting into my ďŹ‚ying car. Yes, abstaining from sex will help a person avoid producing offspring, getting STDs, or breaking a leg after somebody cheaps out on the home dungeon installation. But thereâ€™s a reason they call it a sex drive, not a sex parked in the garage. Also, the advice â€œJust donâ€™t have sex!â€? is especially impractical for guys in their hornitoadinous early 20s like the guy who wrote that letter. Sure, heâ€™ll just sit his 800-pound libido down for a little chat and then politely decline any opportunity to have sex as if heâ€™d just been offered some questionable hors dâ€™oeuvre. As for where I got the idea about (some) women â€œconniving to get a bun in the oven without informing their partner,â€? well, in email Iâ€™ve received from dismayed men paying child support to these women and from research by therapist Dr. Melinda Spohn. Spohn found that more than a third of the 400 women she surveyed at two community colleges had risked pregnancyâ€” surreptitiously going without birth control or sporadically using it when they had sex with men with desirable

qualities (like an apparent willingness to commit and good ďŹ nancial prospects). On a positive note, it isnâ€™t only men who are appalled by this behavior. A female reader who wanted a second child but whose husband wasnâ€™t up for it wrote, â€œI canâ€™t even remember how many people heard this and said â€™well, accidents happen,â€™ followed by a *wink wink.* Seriously, itâ€™s disgusting! Even our family doctor said this! Iâ€™ve always been sure to make those people feel about two inches tall by saying that I would NEVER do that to my husband (and honestly, who wants a child this way?!).â€? This womanâ€™s ethics are the single best guarantee a man has that birth control will be used instead of dropped behind the bed. The thing to do is to make ethics a requirement, meaning looking for a partner to be OMG ethical!!! the way you look for them to be OMG hot!!! In other words, yes, a man who doesnâ€™t want a child should practice abstinenceâ€”the practical, doable kind: abstaining from getting into bed with any woman until heâ€™s observed that he has reason to trust her. (If he wants something loud, sticky, and expensive in his life, he can buy a Ferrari and drive it over chewed gum.)
