Working independently of anyone else, I wrote about these themes quite a bit last year, either literally or metaphorically, all while assuming I was probably crazy. It often felt like I was the only one embroidering these ancient cosmic threads. Maybe I was just goofy with euphoria that I'd found yet another creative device to fuel the engine. Through the muse of tea, I could shatter the space-time continuum, merging past and future, each one expanding and snapping back like a rubber band to the present. I could channel ancient Chinese hermits in my writing and use tea to enhance my solitude. Well, turns out I was not crazy and I was not the only one. Plenty of authors articulate those exact themes and more in the The Soul & Spirit of Tea, this luminous collection, this abundant, ďŹ‚avorful, esoteric blend of essays, this â€œtea-ching book of changes.â€? As with tea, the book unfolds on many levels. You can choose whichever of those to experience in whichever order. In my case, Leonard Cohen, synchronicities and the Isle of Creteâ€”all of which I had very recently just discussed with friendsâ€”all appeared in the ďŹ rst few pages, so that was enough for me to steep some more leaves and let everything sink in. This is what great art, and great tea, tends to do: it makes you realize that you're not alone. â€œThumbs upâ€? or â€œthumbs downâ€? seems a little too dualistic for my palette, as I tend to rely on my own direct experience. In this case, I've ingested the steam and the subtleties (subtitles?) emerging from the whole ceremony. It's all about the tea, for example: A Taoist priest discusses the alchemy of tea. A musician writes about tea as a conduit to creativity. Other essays dedicate themselves to the importance of water and terroir. Ecology, architecture, wine, politics and songâ€”it's all in here. McHenry has been creating paintings like this since those high school days in the backyard, with a couple of buddies slathering paint, pastel, ink, pencil or whatever else on a grid of cards held together by painters tape. Now it’s become the One Thousand Thousand project, which McHenry does with his friend Chris Dyer. Their goal: create one million pieces of original art, eventually. If he doesn’t get sick of it ﬁrst. “It’s almost like a job now,” he told me. Sometimes, he’ll just feel like he’s phoning it in, having learned the tricks to augment or save a grid of cards. Sometimes he’ll get excited. As part of South First Friday, Jason McHenry will be painting works for the One Thousand Thousand project in collaboration with harpist Anna Maria Mendieta, Feb. 7 at Sliding Door Company, 355 South First St., San Jose. South First Fridays When I showed up, McHenry took me on a brief tour One Thousand of the house, then out to the garage where he’d set up Thousand project two grids of cards, one painted with some blue acrylics, the other pinks and reds. “Grab a brush or something. Sliding Door Company Get in there,” he said. The workbenches held paint and KALEID Gallery, tubes and bottles, beeswax, poster paint, pastels and San Jose Fri, Feb 7 pencils. So we spent the next few hours painting and drawing, the conversation ranging from J.D. Salinger to model airplanes to creativity and immortality.

Now I’m deﬁnitely not a painter, but it didn’t really matter: “You gotta turn your brain off. Don’t be a darling about it,” he said. So some teal on the pink, pick up that pastel—why not? Get out the ruler and the pencil, don’t worry about that poor crappy looking square in the corner. Paint it over in gold and umber. Don’t think too much—at the beginning at least. You want circles there, put circles there. They’ll get covered up anyway. Just keep the ﬂow going. McHenry estimates 90 percent of his paintings turn out decent, 5 percent mediocre and 5 percent “totally stink.” He enjoys collaborators, but knows when to take over the painting. While the goal is quantity, the individual pieces get attention and minute edits towards the end. Some turn out beautiful, a combination of happy accident and purposeful painting. Some are unsalvageable, but they’re still a number, redeemed as one of the million. We talked a fair amount about the frustration of the project, how it can get tedious and overwhelming at times. But McHenry emailed me later that night: “And I'll keep going at this thing until I'm dead. I just know it. And in a lot of ways it's smart money to bet on the fact that I hit the one million point before that happens.” —Stephen Layton

Shoe Story

NOT EVERYONE could pull off an entire art show inspired by a single shoe design, but then most shoes don’t carry the signiﬁcance that local skateboarder Steve Caballero’s Half Cabs do. The art show, called “Birth of an Icon,” takes place at Cukui in San Jose’s Japantown, will feature work by more than 25 artists, including Caballero, who is also curating the event. The idea behind the show is for each artist to create a single piece of artwork based off the shoe in some way. “I kind of wanted to do something with the premise of you know when people do artwork of the classic Air Jordans, they have the Air Jordan in the piece of art. People look at that painting and go, ‘oh cool, Air Jordans.’ I wanted to do the same thing but with my shoe, and when people see the painting they go, ‘oh Half Cab,’” Caballero says.

Birth of an Icon Cukui, San Jose

Fri, 7pm, Free The Half Cabs, which are made by Vans, landed in stores in 1992, right as street-skating was taking off. The shoes came to be synonymous with skateboarding and remain popular to this day. Artists’ sole instruction in creating their pieces for “Birth of an Icon” was to take inspiration from the Half Cabs, so it probably doesn’t hurt that the shoes have such a memorable logo: a drawing of Caballero doing the Half Cab trick. Interestingly, the Half Cab skateboarding move was actually pioneered by Tony Hawk in an alteration of the Caballerial—one of Caballero’s most inﬂuential tricks, which he invented in 1981. It was the launching pad for his career and a big leap forward for skateboarding. It’s ﬁtting, though, that the shoe is named after a trick inspired by a different trick, as the Half Cabs were based on a previous Vans shoe design of Caballero’s, the Full Cabs. They were essentially the same, only they had high tops. Caballero learned that skaters were cutting off the high tops and duct-taping them back up in order to skate better in them. He called up Vans and suggested they make Half Cabs and take a little height off the ankles. Caballero’s contributions to skating are well known enough that the Caballerial was the subject of a Jeopardy answer a few weeks ago. (“Time to hit the street on this piece of equipment and do a Caballerial.” The question, of course, is “What is a skateboard?”) “It was really cool to see that. It’s pretty amazing to see how far skateboarding has come,” Caballero says. —Aaron Carnes

Culture War WHAT CAN BE said about this ﬁlm is what is said in it, re: a painting by Hitler: it’s not bad, but it’s not good. The Monuments Men tells a noble story of World War II, previously told in the vastly superior documentary The Rape of Europa. (And that documentary didn’t go in for Commie-bashing, pointing out how there were Soviet art-warriors protecting the treasures of the Hermitage by spiriting them off to Siberia.) Hitler aimed to celebrate the triumph of his Reich with his tomb, the Fuhrer Museum, a hulking marble nightmare containing all of the art he looted. We see a plaster model of the horrormuseum, but maybe this is where CGI could have shown it to us—the sight of the uniformed SS, crowing over the masterpieces, might have given us a better sense of what was at stake. And The Monuments Men, about the U.S. military squad seeking what the Nazis stole, frets terribly about what’s at stake. Someone really got hung up on the question of whether or not it was worth risking the lives of our boys to save a work of art. Most viewers are willing to follow director/star George Clooney into hell and back, but he has to keep explaining what the purpose of

the mission is—ﬁrst to FDR, then to an Army major, then, when the mess is over, Harry Truman (Christian Rodska). It’s as if the producers were worried that once the concept of a masterpiece of European art had been explained, they felt someone in the audience would ask, “Where’s Europe?” Thank God for Bill The Monuments Men Murray, the only person over 50 not PG-13; 118 min. hated by anyone under 50, protected Opens Fri. from all harm by a bubble of bemusement, wearing an ascot with his olive-drab uniform and a helmet with his bathrobe. Hark to a dreadfully written romance between the scholar (Cate Blanchett) who saved the Jeu de Paume museum’s trove and Matt Damon as a Metropolitan Museum scholar with execrable French. It’s a ﬂoppy, centerless movie, understated to the point of occasional sleepwalk. The service comedy (emphasized by Alexandre Desplat’s goofy marches) gets baffling in the face of Nazi menace, and Hitler’s threat to take it all with him like King Sardanapalus. Clooney may be our Cary Grant, but this is his I Was a Male War Bride. —Richard von Busack

Cassette tapes have returned and they’re taking over the music industry. Well, maybe they’re not that popular, but within certain underground punk and indie circles, they have become a popular way once again for bands to release their music. One band that’s taken advantage of this format is Portland indie rock band the Woolen Men, who’ve put out a ton of lo-fi, small-run releases exclusively on tape— and they sell out of them quickly. “Considering how quick we were recording, cassettes were very fast to duplicate. Obviously you could do DVRs, but we were recording Woolen Men to cassette tape on our four-track so it just made sense to continue on tape,” says drummer Raf Spielman “Doing Wed, Feb 12, 8pm limited run releases that you know are not going to exist for very long, it gives you some freedom to experiment, and try Cafe Stritch, things out, so that when it does come time to make an LP you San Jose have all the kinks out of the system.” The Woolen Men finally did release an LP last year—actually they released two. First, they compiled the best tracks from their many cassettes for their self-released LP, Dog Years. They followed that up with a self-titled LP, containing all new material, on Brooklyn record label Woodsist. Like the rest of the Woodsist catalog, the Woolen Men’s self-titled record is influenced in equal parts by sunny ’60s psychedelic-pop and noisy ’80s post-punk. The songs are driven by Lawton Browning’s jangly guitar, Spielman’s minimalistic drumming and Alex Geddes’ punky, warm bass parts. They take turns singing. Their vocals are crooner-esque, but gritty, flawed and ultra-catchy. Their LP with Woodsist was made just like their Dog Years compilation, only more quickly. They recorded upwards of 25 songs over the course of four separate recording sessions for the album, but only put 10 songs on the actual album. The new album has a noticeably higher production value, at least compared to the muffled tape-recordings they’d been releasing, but that wasn’t so much an intentional move as their natural progression as a band. “We were just getting the best that we could get, and now we’re just getting better at it. If you want to get good at something you have to do it a lot. We wanted to get good at recording ourselves and at writing. We just had to do it again and again,” says Spielman One thing unchanged in the band’s formula is their penchant for short songs. Like ’90s lo-fi gods Guided By Voices, some of their songs are so short they end almost abruptly. “The easiest way to say something is to say it with the most impact. And if you can do the chorus one time and get your message across, the repetition is just a waste of time,” says Lawton. “You can think of the Minutemen and their punk ethos, like really short, or the way the Wire songs sometimes just get in and get out. There’s just something really appealing about brevity,” says Lawton.—Aaron Carnes

I'm not necessarily saying you should rent a megaphone and shout news of your yearnings in the crowded streets. In fact, it's better if you are discriminating about whom you tell. The most important thing is to not be hiding anything from yourself about what moves you the most. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Back in 2005, three

young men launched YouTube, in part motivated by a banal desire. They were frustrated because they couldn't find online videos of the notorious incident that occurred during the Super Bowl halftime show, when Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction exposed her breast. In response, they created the now-famous website that allows people to share videos. I foresee the possibility of a comparable sequence for you, Aquarius. A seemingly superficial wish or trivial interest could inspire you to come up with a fine new addition to your world. Pay attention to your whimsical notions.
