The dark comedy, which focuses on three women who face a choice that’s tougher than one might initially expect, is narrated by actors—never seen onstage— playing the trio’s husbands. The Smell of the Kill opens with a dinner party. It’s a The Smell of the Kill monthly chore for the wives, who all dislike each other, that’s organized by their husbands, who are all buddies. City Lights Theater, Debra (Diahanna Davidson), is an ex-appraiser with an San Jose adulterous husband who maintains her denial through sardonic and biting comments. Nikki (Mandy Ames), is the Thru Feb 25 owner of the house. She is at wit’s end because her husband is in deep trouble with the law. And Molly (Morgan Voellger), a woman utterly controlled by her husband, plays the ditz to the others' comedic disillusionment, sprinkling her naïveté with great one-liners. One by one, the wives’ grievances are revealed. Through frenetic and hilarious dialogue, it becomes clear that the woman are living equally unfortunate lives. Molly is clearly obsessed with Nikki's child, the baby she can never have. Debra is resentful of Nikki for putting her career before her child, while begrudgingly accepting her life for what it is. Meanwhile, the immature, indignant husbands, reduced to offstage voices, constantly yell, horse around and vie for the attention of the three wives, although they are mostly ignored. Soon, however, the men will be the center of attention, whether they know it or not. Nikki's husband, Jay, the alleged criminal, has installed a meat-locker in the basement of the house, a room in which the husbands quickly manage to lock themselves. After listening to their knocks for help, Nikki gets a truly malicious idea: why not use this opportunity to kill their husbands and stage it as an accident? She sets out to convince the other women, justifying the killing as the proper response to their spouses’ brutishness. Molly, under husband Danny’s thumb, is quickly convinced. She and Nikki resort to force to win Debra over—or at least stop her from foiling their plan. Chaos builds, but the humor stays crisp and clear. The actors do a superb job of playing it tense and keenly aware of their own burdens, mixing slapstick and quick conversation with leitmotif of murder. The dialogue is also surprisingly dirty— which adds to the fun—and the crassness is equal to the charisma. Best of all, the denouement of the play, despite the chaos before, is both realistic and satisfying. —Tad Malone

RAW Talents RAW San Jose’s PIXELS showcase draws artists from many different disciplines, whether it’s a burlesque-hula hoop tag-team performance, visual artists, fashion designers—or a brand new band. PIXELS kicks off a year of bimonthly artist showcases in San Jose. PIXELS paired up burlesque dancer Mercy Beaucoup and hula-hooper Sarah Anne Howe for their unusual set. “We try to create a network of the entire creative community,” says RAW Showcase director Laurel Erilane, “and here’s a perfect RAW San Jose example of artists who hadn’t really met each other, but presents PIXELS had this opportunity for them to expand on their stage time, show their own material in a new way that ended Jan 29, 8 pm up working out for them to work together.” Motif Lounge, RAW is a national nonprofit arts organization that San Jose focuses on promoting emerging artists in the first decade Tickets will be sold for $20 at the door. of their careers. San Francisco’s Heklina will appear at a Q&A with director Cielo Lima following the screening of the documentary Heklina, which follows her career as an alternative drag artist. New band Column of Air, based out of San Jose, will have their second live performance. Visual artist Andre Hart, originally approached to have an art space, opted for a musical presence instead. Hart teamed up with David Sosa and Mitch Waldman to form the band, which draws on influences as diverse as Iggy Pop and MGMT. Even the still art can’t manage to stay still. Artists David Mejia and Stefanie Sylvester will bring the crowd into their art, drawing and painting people at the event. Motif’s top balcony, usually the VIP lounge, will host a pop-up gallery of artists and designers. “People can really interact and intermingle to start those conversations where you’re really up close and personal with the artist,” Erilane says.—Rachel Schemel

Rollin’ Crew Rocks Steady ANY GOOD DJ gets the audience dancing, but a great DJ can get a crowd moshing. That’s the thought that went through the mind of local DJ Ichy the Killer when, while on tour in Japan with Insolence, he caught the Rollin’ Crew. This crew, from Japan, got incredible reactions from people in the crowd, with their unusual selection of music, which included, among other genres, heavy metal and punk rock. “They’re like a rock DJ crew,” Ichy says. “People watch these guys like it’s a metal show. There will be a little mosh pit going—like a DJ mosh pit, with girls getting thrown in. It’s insane.” Now as ﬁve of the DJs from the crew embark on their ﬁrst official U.S. tour, Ichy helped set up a show for them in San Jose at the Back Bar. They are touring with Soulman, former lead emcee of ’90s live-hip-hop group Phunk Junkeez, who launched a successful career as a DJ nearly a decade ago.

Though rock DJing is more common these days in Japan, it wasn’t in 2001 when the Rollin’ Crew started. However, it doesn’t mean they only play metal and punk. “We'll play all kinds of stuff from hip-hop, reggae and electro,” says Zodiac, one of the Rollin’ DJs. “We play records with all elements and sum it up as rock. The amount of music you can blend together with that approach is really deep. I think it's our greatest strength.” Soulman first caught wind of the Rollin’ Crew five years ago in Japan and loved them. Now he manages them. “If you want to see what American culture is like in other countries, go see the Rollin shows,” Soulman says. “You’ll see what we export and what’s cool about American music and American style …. They’ll go from Public Enemy to the Vandals, fat beats, some good punk songs.” Like Soulman, the Rollin’ Crew are big vinyl enthusiasts, and still dig through record stores’ bins to search for hidden gems. Soulman is, in fact, a longtime DJ and started back in the ’80s before he formed the Phunk Junkeez. According to Soulman, there will be four DJ decks on stage, with him, Ichy and the five DJs in the Rollin’ Crew taking turns all night. “When I’m DJing I want people to feel it,” Soulman says. “You can’t stand up there being a freak playing records. It’s got to be inside of you. It’s an organic thing. People see that I love the music when I’m playing it. I know you’ve discussed how the guy should pay on the first few dates. I’ve been dating a pretty fabulous woman for a month, and I’m dipping into my savings to take her out to the sort of restaurants she’s used to. I earn a decent living in a creative field, but she is in finance and clearly makes far more money than I do. I may have complicated things when, on our third date, she wanted to pick up the check and I wouldn’t let her. Is there a smooth way to let her know that I now need her to throw down some dough?—Can We Say Awkward? The organ that gets used on the third date isn’t supposed to be the kidney you sold on the black market to pay for dinner. It’s nice to take a woman out for a special meal from time to time, but the guy who can keep up the weekly wining and dining at restaurants where even the cockroaches speak passable French isn’t the guy you are—and probably isn’t the guy she expects you to be. Women do look for a man to be ambitious and show potential. But typically, a woman who wants a rich guy not only has calculated her date’s net worth (probably pretty successfully) long before the first date but has also trained herself to identify a fake Rolex at 50 paces and read even the subtlest signs about a man’s income like fiscal tea leaves. So, this woman is probably well aware that if you’re “managing a hedge fund,” it’s just a little money you’re putting aside to replace the dead plants on your balcony. Also, unless a man’s a spy, a woman doesn’t like him to pretend to be

somebody he’s not. This isn’t to say you should have some awkward conversation with this woman about how you really do need her to pay for dinner—or hope she gets the idea when she sees you standing by the on-ramp with a cardboard sign, “Spare $264.50, plus tip?” Instead, just take her to places you can pay for painlessly and wait until you’re in a relationship to talk about money. Though women evolved to look for potential partners to show generosity, you can do that in a symbolic way, simply by treating her to something more affordable—maybe a ticket to a museum and fancy ice cream afterward—and by showing generosity of spirit: fairness, kindness, and willingness to do the right thing even when it’s hard. A woman who really likes you will really like you when you’re treating her to the shoe rental at a bowling alley. Plus, you’ll be more fun when you aren’t worrying about money, and she'll be more relaxed when she isn't worrying that you'll have to ﬁle for bankruptcy if she adds shrimp to her Caesar salad.

Maybe start talking about music and casually mention that you don’t understand why some people like to listen to music during sex—such a distraction. As for any worries you may have that this will turn a guy off, trust me; there probably isn’t a guy out there who won’t ﬁnd the musical silence during sex preferable to the sound of you sitting with your arms folded on the couch.
