Nationwide chain BJ’s Brewery opened its 140th restaurant in San Jose this week. There are currently 62 BJ’s restaurants in California, a brand that specializes in handcrafted beers, deep-dish pizzas, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, and their signature Pizookie dessert: a warm, deep dish chocolate chip cookie topped with ice cream. Last week, the restaurant was in rehearsal mode, hosting soft opening nights and inviting members of their community in to help train staff. Thirteen different menus circulated the restaurant as diners got a sampling of BJ’s deep-dish pizzas and specialty brews. BJ’s national brewmaster was also on deck to talk shop with customers and oversee operations. BJ’s is open Mon-Thu, 11am-midnight, Fri, 11am-1am, Sat, 10am-1am and Sun 10am-midnight.

South Bay Oktoberfests

Germany’s massive, 16-day beer festival is officially under way. Silicon Valley is a long way from Deutschland, but there are plenty of events in the South Bay modeled after the Munich event. Here’s a sampling: MOUNTAIN VIEW’S FIRST AND ONLY OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION Stein’s Beer Garden & Restaurant hosts Mountain View’s first and only Oktoberfest event on Oct. 5-6, 10am-6pm. Owner Ted Kim has aimed for a truly authentic experience, with a large beer tent, long benches, traditional German food and drink, and live music. Children’s events include a bouncy house and a pretzel-eating contest. Admission is free. ST. LEO THE GREAT OKTOBERFEST Sip from the hardiest of German beers, indulge in Bavarian food and desserts, and catch some German oompa music at St. Leo’s 2nd annual Oktoberfest Celebration, held on Oct. 5 at St. Leo the Great Church, San Jose. Outside, a euro-bungy, rock wall and a “toddler” area with inflatables means there’s something for everyone. The effects of plummeting wages, and swelling perks for a tiny percentage of plutocrats, are well known, but there are professional deniers of the level of pain America ďŹ nds itself inâ€”and these think-tank hacks have less ground to stand on when Robert Reich is through with them. Taking advantage of the movie law that symbol equals character, the indefatigable Robert Reich putters around the Bay Area in a Mini Cooper. Itâ€™s as diminutive, nimble and peppy as its driver. When Reich stops the Reichmobile for a lecture tour, he pops the trunk and extracts a small wooden soapbox so he can reach the podium. The former Secretary of Labor and current UC Berkeley professor was born with Fairbanks Syndrome, or MED. Given the ďŹ ve foot tall frame he got, Reich decided to make his rhetoric towering, instead. â€œDo I look like Big Government?â€? he asks a crowd.
