I’ve been seeing my boyfriend for 10 months and living with him and his 12-yearold daughter for half that time. He broke up with his daughter’s mother after she became addicted to coke and then meth. She has been in and out of jail and has a massive number of possessions, loads of which are still here: furniture, little picture frames, small decorative pieces, jewelry boxes full of random junk (earrings, magazine clippings, makeup, little figurines, candy wrappers). When I moved in, I spent days boxing up many of her possessions, but she claims to live in a tiny apartment, won’t divulge where, and refuses to take a single box. She even freaks out at the mention of getting rid of her dumb garden gnomes (which she stole from someone’s yard while high). If my boyfriend tried to make her take her things, she’d have a huge meltdown, putting their daughter in the middle, and he’s submissive to her because of that. I’d put everything in storage, but we don’t have the extra money. My boyfriend’s getting exasperated about this, and I’m thinking I should just drop it. I hate living among all of her things, but I love him so much that I don't seem to have a choice. —Smothered You’re a hard lady to buy a housewarming gift for, as they don’t make plaques that say, “Home is where the heart-shaped jewelry box full of your boyfriend’s daughter’s mother’s candy wrappers is.” It’s no small thing, having to wake up every day in some other woman’s twobedroom junk drawer. But like many women, you seem to prioritize your relationship over your feelings and wellbeing. There are compromises to be made in any romantic partnership, but being gnawingly miserable in order to be happy doesn’t end well, assuming you weren’t looking to live resentfully ever after. Healthy compromise involves expressing your feelings and together figuring out solutions that work for both of you. There is a way to turn this situation positive—without lighting a match or opening your front door and yelling, “Yard sale!” Use this as your training ground for developing healthier conflict resolution. To bring up how you’re feeling, open with the good stuff—how much you appreciate him and your life together—and then tell him that you’re unhappy living in a house that constantly reminds you of his ex. Let him know that you understand his concern for protecting his daughter but that the solution isn’t submitting to emotional blackmail; it’s talking to his daughter in advance about what you’re doing and why and maybe scheduling a sleepaway for her on the day the trash hits the fan. Tempting as it must be to “store” his ex’s things in a landfill, it’s safest to proceed with the expectation that she’ll sue him for that and claim that the bud vase that was under the bed came from the Qing dynasty and not free, with a Wednesday wax job, from the carwash. As

for your not having the “extra” money for storage, tending to your feelings, as well as your boyfriend’s, may mean that you both go without lattes or do odd jobs so you stop living as a second-class citizen to two stolen garden gnomes, 17 partially filled shampoo bottles, and all the rest. University of Chicago law professor Lior Strahilevitz said that the law typically regards a situation like you’ve described as “gratuitous bailment,” legalese for a person’s temporarily holding someone else’s property without benefit or compensation. According to Strahilevitz, your boyfriend would be wise to hang on to small valuables, like photos and fine jewelry, which aren’t a menace to store. But, he says, “donating or disposing of the furniture and junk after a few months in which emails and calls … asking her to remove the property were ignored probably would not constitute gross negligence,” a scary legal term that merely describes being really careless with someone’s property. Although, at the moment, one woman’s trash is another woman’s trash, the prognosis looks good for that “another woman” no longer being you. Personally, I’m picturing the winning bidder on Storage Wars dreaming of abandoned art treasure in her unit and finding it—from Rodin’s little-known “garden gnome sitting on a toilet” period.

Iâ€™m curious about the effect of a sizeable (say, one-kilometer) meteorite striking the moon. Assuming it hit the side facing us, would we be able to see the impact or the aftermath (plumes of dust) with the naked eye? â€”Kirk Andersen, Kyoto This is another example of why the world, or anyway NASA, needs to put me in charge. Obviously you donâ€™t realize a meteorite struck the moon on March 17, producing an incandescent ďŹ‚ash readily visible with the naked eye from Earth. Readily visible, that is, to anyone looking directly at it during the approximately one second it lasted. Evidently no one wasâ€”it wasnâ€™t until two months later that a NASA analyst spotted the impact while reviewing the telescope videos. What telescope videos, you ask? The ones NASA has been making since 2005, when it started keeping telescopes trained on the moon 10 to 12 nights a month (whenever the moon is 10 to 55 percent full), looking for meteorites crashing into it. Astronauts may camp on the lunar surface for extended missions some day, the space agency reasoned, and since the moon has no protective atmosphere, getting brained by incoming meteorites is a non-trivial risk. To get an idea of how non-trivial, NASA began counting visible strikes. So far itâ€™s tallied more than 300. The one on March 17 was the biggest so far, 10 times brighter than anything seen previously, although nowhere near the hypothetical one-kilometer catastrophe youâ€™re talking about. This rock was more like a foot in diameter and weighed maybe 90 pounds. Still, it was traveling close to 56,000 miles per hour and had an impact equivalent to ďŹ ve tons of TNT, gouging a crater perhaps 65 feet across. NASA has asked the scientists operating the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, now mapping the moonâ€™s surface, to take a picture of the March 17 crater, and they expect to get around to it later this year. Thatâ€™s why I need to be running things. I concede that as a practical matter thereâ€™s no need to get crater photos right this second, and if meteorites slam into the moon in March and we donâ€™t hear about it till May, thatâ€™s likewise no big deal. By the same token, if there were a two-month delay announcing the results of the Stanley Cup ďŹ nalsâ€”to pick another realm where objects move at 56,000 miles an hour and you canâ€™t tell what happened till you see the replayâ€”would it really matter in the grand scheme? No. However, that attitude doesnâ€™t make for happy fans. Same with the lunar meteorite watch.

The main beneďŹ t the space program offers the average civilian is the chance to see cool pictures, and here we have the cosmos putting on a continuous ďŹ reworks show for free. But all we get are some fuzzy shots taken through an Earthbound 14-inch telescope, and they arrive two months late. If NASA wants to keep those appropriations rolling in, itâ€™ll have to do better than that. The Hubble Space Telescope can take extraordinarily detailed photos of objects in space due to its vantage point in low Earth orbit, where itâ€™s free of atmospheric distortion. The Hubble, I acknowledge, is too important to waste on shooting videos of lunar car wrecks and is too clunky for moon photography anyway. The meteorite watch, however, gives us a plausible scientiďŹ c excuse to launch a spacecraft optimized for high-res lunar videography. Iâ€™m happy to make the case for this to the relevant parties. (â€œCongressman, do you want to see our astronauts squashed like bugs because we were too cheap to take decent pictures of incoming rocks?â€?) If NASAâ€™s interested, Iâ€™m available for a reasonable fee. Make no mistake, thereâ€™s plenty to see. In its ďŹ rst 18 months, examining less than an eighth of the lunar surface, the NASA monitoring program recorded 54 meteorite impacts big enough to produce ďŹ‚ashes of light visible through an Earth telescope. Sixteen hours of monitoring during one meteor shower captured 27 visible impacts. Given some skillful editing, imagine what that would look like on HDTV. But you asked what would happen if a kilometer-wide rock hit the moon. Not only would it be readily visible on Earth, itâ€™d leave quite a gouge on the lunar surfaceâ€”a crater 9.5 miles across, assuming the meteorite came straight down at 35,700 miles an hour. If it struck at the same speed as the March 17 boulder, itâ€™d release the equivalent of 7.8 trillion tons of TNT, which would probably be visible in broad daylight. Weâ€™re not likely to see anything like that soon. Even for the Earth, a larger target, a one-kilometer asteroid strike occurs once every million years. But video of more typical lunar impacts, if we were set up to record them properly? Donâ€™t know about you, but Iâ€™d deďŹ nitely click â€œplay.â€?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In 2010, two economics professors from Harvard wrote a paper that became a crucial piece of evidence for the global austerity movement. Politicians used it to justify their assertion that the best way to cure our long-running ﬁnancial ills is for governments to spend less money. Oddly, no one actually studied the paper to see if it was based on accurate data until April 2013. Then Thomas Herndon, a 28-year-old Ph.D. student at the University of Massachusetts, dived in and discovered fundamental mistakes that largely discredited the professors’ conclusions. I believe you have a similar mojo going for you, Scorpio. Through clear thinking and honest inquiry, you have the power to get at truths everyone else has missed.
