Grateful Peons Wow, and just when it appeared they couldn’t get any more obvious in the thumbing of the nose at the rules the little people have to live by (“Family Health Fiasco,” SVNews, May 22).

This whole group couldn’t be more incestuous if they were an actual royal family. I think that might be the problem: they think they’re royalty sitting up on thrones throwing out crumbs for the little people and then being indignant when the peons don’t just shut up and act thankful. “Oh, thank you, sir & madam, for stealing our tax dollars for your personal use. We are ever so grateful. JO KOY San Jose Improv, San Jose Thu – 7pm; $30-$35 Jo Koy stands out from other comedians with positive energy and a well-rounded sense of humor, which probably stems from when he performed impromptu shows in front of his family. He had a fairly modest beginning as a performer in his childhood, slowly moving up to coffeehouses in Las Vegas. He got his first career start on Chelsea Lately and The Tonight Show. Since then he’s been touring nationwide with stops in all the big comedy clubs. (AD)

The time has finally come: San Jose lo-fi, fuzz-rock Dinners are releasing their long-awaited full-length record.

And by record, they mean an actual slab of vinyl. As members of two of San Jose’s most cherished indierock bands, Worker Bee and Doctor Nurse, these four guys are San Jose indie-rock royalty. Dinners, though, doesn’t sound like either of their root bands—more of a psychedelic rock group, with Jeff Brummett (Doctor Nurse) and Andy Barnes (Worker Bee) taking equal reins on songwriting duties. Their own rich history as music listeners (and possessors of gigantic record collections) makes for the kind of music that other

Hard-rock riffs and R&B grooves seem like a natural blend, though not a lot of bands these days attempt the combination. Locals Melted State ride a very thin line between the genres. It’s honest, genuine music, even if it isn’t following whatever trend is popular at the moment. Singer Noah Kibreab’s soulful growling voice will get under your skin—if the music hasn’t already moved you. If this were the ’90s, their breed of groove-rock would have landed them a record deal by now—but such are the times.

With the bass, drums, guitar and a keyboard, they unabashedly offer to play their hearts out to you. (AC)

Hailing all the way from Sonora, the Kountry Kittens make a stop in San Jose to present their Vaudeville Tease Roadshow. What makes this burlesque show unique is their blending of punk and “kountry” aesthetics into a classic burlesque show to, if you will, give it a kick. In the past, this trio has even performed joint shows alongside punk bands like Swinging Utters and the Reverend Horton Heat. What’s most impressive is that the three girls take care of all their management, costumes and show choreography purely on a D.I.Y. formula. Their San Jose appearance is part of a minitour, with stops in only four cities throughout California. (AD)

(one of Castroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s strongest rockers), have toured extensively and are now preparing to release yet another EP, Howâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Everybodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Doings, which will be available this Saturday. The songwriting is still subtly complex, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve loosened up a bit and are rocking harder and with more feeling than before. This

No Green Day fan who grew up listening to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dookieâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Insomniacâ&#x20AC;? could have imagined their songs interpreted into any sort of theatrical distribution. Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer, however, found a way to craft this nowmainstream punk bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s songs into a Broadway show that has achieved critically acclaimed success. The show follows the stories of three lifelong friends who are faced with honoring their personal values in a post-9/11 world. ITZHAK PERLMAN, the esteemed Israeli-American violinist, will kick off the 2013–14 season of Stanford Live. Perlman’s Music Program (Sept. 22) showcases the talents of young musicians, with Perlman acting as conductor and mentor.

Other classical-music highlights of the upcoming season include perennial favorites the Kronos Quartet (Jan. 15, 2014) performing new pieces by Philip Glass and Valentin Silvestrov. Chanticleer and the New Century Chamber Orchestra will combine instruments for the first time next March. Their joint concert, called “Atlantic Crossing,” is designed to replicate the music of the period between the World Wars as experienced on a luxury liner. The program takes place March 20, 2014. Superstar violinist Joshua Bell performs Feb. 8.

One of the major projects of the season looks to be “Linked Verse” (Dec. 7), a multimedia concerto by Stanford composer Jaroslaw Kapuscinsky. It will feature the stage magic of OpenEnded Group, a digital-media collective, with music by sho player Ko Ishikawa and cellist Maya Beiser. The evening aims to compete with Avatar in its use of 3D stereoscopic videos—glasses provided.

The Stanford Lively Arts 2013–14 season begins Sept. 22. Most concerts take place at the new, highly touted Bing Concert Hall on the Stanford Campus; ticket prices range from about $20 to $75 for most shows. FASHION, football and philanthropy anchor a splashy soiree planned for the fifth-annual Summer Fashion Show at Santana Row on Saturday.

Extra excitement this year comes courtesy of guest Vernon Davis, the 49ers’ star tight end. His scheduled stroll down the catwalk has prompted faster ticket sales than in Fashion Shows previous years. “We always sell out, but we’ve seen a lot more tickets purchased earlier this year than in past Saturday, June 1; years,” says Collette Navarrette, marketing director at 1 and 4pm; $40 Santana Row. “I think Vernon has a lot to do with that.”

Santana Row, San Jose The show, which typically raises $8,000 to $10,000 for the featured foundations, hopes to beat fundraising efforts from previous years—a plausible feat for Santana Row’s affluent community. Fifty percent of each ticket purchase will go to the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts, which provides art education to underprivileged youth. Davis, who paints when he’s not making the highlight reel on sports news shows, opened Santana Row’s first art gallery, Gallery 85, last December. Davis will close the fashion show wearing menswear by Franco Uomo—a designer who has dressed Davis for various red carpet events.

Having a 49er model isn’t the only “first” for the Summer Fashion Show.

This will be the first year the show will offer a Beauty Lounge. The preshow events include complimentary makeup touch-ups, artificial-eyelash application and wine tasting from six local wineries.

Newly opened women’s fashion retailer Calypso St. Barth will kick off the show with its signature resort wear—fitting for the poolside function.

The fashion show will feature clothing from Santana Row retail stores, including Pink Stripes, Free People, Splendid, Brooks Brothers, Tommy Bahama, Ted Baker and Penelope. Swag will be dispensed, including 15 percent discounts at participating stores and restaurants.

After the show, festivities will continue with in-store events throughout the Row. Stores like Calypso and Furla will host wine tastings, raffles and DJs for all shoppers. “I call it fashion that looks and feels good, because you can enjoy fun fashion and wine, but you also know your money is going back to a wonderful cause,” says Navarrette.—Jennifer Elias Summer

True, like Allen, Baumbach looks back at the French New Wave, helping himself to Georges Delerue’s soundtracks for the films of that era and photographing his collaborator, lead actress and girlfriend Greta Gerwig, in radiant

black-and-white.

It’s true that Frances is, like Diane Keaton’s Annie, one of those people born without that little switch on the throat that stops us from saying everything we think. Like Annie, Frances doesn’t know what she thinks, anyway, until this instant she’s just heard herself saying it.

And the situation worsens when she drinks. But this kind of blurting is an eternal quality among young women orbiting the art world.

During this 27th year of her life, Frances’ shield is her dependably plain ex-college pal Sophia (Mickey Summer). She’s a lean, sharpfeatured woman with a pair of spectacles so severe that their frames seem to glow in the dark.

She and Frances are housemates and best friends forever, pledged

to being “undatable.” But Frances doesn’t consider the problem of different personal velocities.

Sophia moves up, settling in with a boyfriend she supposedly didn’t like much—and it turns out that he makes serious money. Frances meanwhile gets edged out from her Manhattan dance troupe and starts taking the path of least resistance to one after another of several shared apartments.

The film’s not fluffy. It notes weight of rent on prevaricating artist types with no visible means of support. And there’s pretty constant class-card playing—the money woes help make Frances the awkward one among the smooth people she knows.

As New York becomes more ruthless with cash, Baumbach works among the margins left to the artists of the city: Chinatown and the untrendy parts of Brooklyn.

Ultimately, our heroine makes a field trip home for a Unitarian Christmas in good old dowdy Sacramento.

You don’t often see movies now about women who are friends— “We’re like a lesbian couple that doesn’t have sex anymore.” The way Gerwig and Summer portray their relationship, you’re satisfied that there isn’t any kind of spark between them, or that denying that spark is the key to Frances’ “undatability.” Some people are vines, and some people are trellises, and the triumph in this is that Frances only seems to be looking for someone to cling and grow on.

The movie is a love letter to Gerwig. She is the actress who made mumblecore happen. She has now been kicked upstairs to work with a director who really sees her and knows what she’s capable of (as opposed to those dry experimental films with directors who sat there and waited for something to happen).

Frances Ha loves Gerwig in motion, when she dances awkwardly, leaps down a street on aw her way to work or rides a bike he bundled up in a December day bu in the suburbs. The off-blonde hair and the Stanwyck contours ha of her mouth are celebrated, as is the unpretentious style: showing th off a cure for the booze-spins and slanging it (when she hears some sla boy she knows say, “Ahoy, sexy,” on the cellphone, Frances can’t stop using that dumb phrase ironically).

Gerwig is so good that she brings out the poignancy in a whirlwind, sleep-deprivation-blighted, creditcard-financed trip to Paris, foolishly taken on the spur of the moment just so Frances can be equal to the fancy people she meets at a party.

Frances Ha makes a star out of Gerwig, and she’s the kind of star we need: a goofy one we can feel tender about but never underestimate. The film ends happy, and maybe you don’t buy it, but what Frances Ha says is true: people of an unusual type need to create an unusual kind of art to express themselves.

FAST & FURIOUS 6 (PG-13; 130 min.) This so-so fifth sequel is getting better word of mouth than its predecessor, possibly because of director Justin Lin’s emphasis on family bonding (it’s preparing us for the cartoon series). Maybe the film is popular because it’s uncomplicated: the story is relatively free of twists with the points spelled out in easyto-understand block letters, and the dialogue might as well be in Esperanto, considering how necessary it is. The plot is euphemistically described as “some 007 shit.” The cast has to track down a rival team of race-car-driving felons headed by a sinister Brit (Luke Evans); the team is assembled by Interpol agent (Dwayne Johnson) and his former criminal partner (Vin Diesel). Maybe all this aging muscle is setting a softer tone: Johnson’s straightness of face is as much of a miracle as his physique, with a neck that literally dwarfs his head. Vin Diesel’s transformation to Telly Savalas is nearly complete—once walking hard-on, now as avuncular an old baldie as you might find parked behind a table full of dominoes in Queens. This time around, Paul Walker is the family hump whose new baby we’re urged to care about. He is recruited from this new-dad life with the line “How’s life for a retired international criminal?”

She gets involved with two men: Jerry (Paul Douglas), an egoless dullard of a fisherman, and his antsy but studly buddy Earl (Robert Ryan). Together Ryan and Stanwyck have explosive physical chemistry. It’s a duet you don’t get often: an actor who displayed the bitterness of the postwar era in his face, matched with an actress who was at home on ocean liners and tugboats alike. But this is a hard-nosed, urgent movie firmly on the side of the usual victim of this kind of picture: the straying wife. Marilyn Monroe has a small role as a cannery girl. Their electronic-pop sound and instrumentation remain intact, but the lyrics and tone of the new material has evolved into more emotional territory. Of the 10 songs the Limousines played, eight came from their upcoming sophomore album, Hush, set for digital release on June 6 and to be celebrated with a party at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.

“We were there to show them who we’ve become,” says vocalist Eric Victorino. “We wanted to make that one statement that we’ve changed a lot.”

Over the past five years, the Limousines have, in fact, changed a

lot while also remaining San Jose’s biggest, most nationally recognized band still releasing music.

The Limousines first hit the scene with the brilliant pop gem “Very Busy People,” a song Victorino likes to say is about “jerking off to Tumblr” but is really a smart commentary on the information overload that everyone is experiencing in the age of the Internet and smartphones. The song made it on the radio, bringing them more national exposure than they ever expected to garner.

The clever existentialism continued on their debut LP, Get Sharp, first released independently in 2010 but then reissued on Dangerbird Records later in the year. It featured the fun, selfreflective single “Internet Killed the Video Star.” The track hit a million views on YouTube and brought the band an international fan base.

HUSH Hush, funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign that more than doubled the band’s goal when it reached $75,000, opens with a mood we have not yet experienced with the Limousines. “Love Is a Dog From Hell” describes the thrill of a first kiss but cautions that love is unpredictable and complex once the door is opened.

“We wanted to write songs that we could perform as adults for the rest of our lives,” Victorino says.

“I can see being 45 years old and singing ‘Love Is a Dog From Hell.’

The old stuff had a short shelf life. I can’t see myself being 40 and singing a song about Tumblr.”

The album talks about love from a multitude of angles, which range from painfully honest to almost clichéd in their deliberate lack of witticisms. Unlike a lot of music other bands have written about love, Hush taps into the reality of what love actually feels like and not a fantasyy image of love. of the record “Ninety percent p is about all the best parts and the worst parts and the middle parts of what loving somebody is all about,” explains.

Victorino ex In “Little Space,” for instance, talks about his own Victorino ta with intimacy. “It’s hard challenges w to be loved and to hate yourself at the h same time,” Victorino tells me. “It’s hard to feel like you don’t deserve love. That’s where a lot of the songs I wrote from my perspective are coming from.”

On “Bed Bugs,” he wrote about bandmate Giovanni Giusti. Victorino had watched him experience the heartbreak of falling in love with someone who didn’t reciprocate the feeling.

Complementing the lyrical shift on Hush is a new depth in production that brings a more multilayered sound to the new songs. The beats laid down by Giusti, who also mixed the record himself, have a more distinctly ’80s sound than Get Sharp, and it won’t be hard to get crowds to dance to them.

Retro, however, it is not.

“I remember stuff on Get Sharp, I was making beats in my mom’s sewing room,” Giusti says. “That was so long ago, my production has changed 100 percent.”

LOVE MOVEMENT It took several months after they’d received the money via Kickstarter before their songwriting really clicked. While Hush is indeed darker than Get Sharp, they let go of the idea of making a “dark” album and instead went with their instincts and wrote an album mostly about love. Then the album poured out.

“We thought we were working before. It wasn’t until that last period where we were like, ‘Oh we’re really working on this thing.’

It’s kind of funny because in a way we were working on it for two or three years, and in another way we weren’t working on it until a couple months ago,” Victorino says.

So far, the Limousines have gotten positive responses from “Love Is a Dog From Hell,” released a week ago, and they’re optimistic about the rest of album.

“The fact that it was funded by Kickstarter or whatever is going to be a footnote,” Victorino says. “The big feat wasn’t raising that money. The feat was that we morphed from one type of band to another successfully and made a great record.”

The fact that it took three years to release a follow-up to Get Sharp seemed a mystery to fans, but behind the scenes Victorino and Giusti were reeling from personal tragedies and problems with their label. Since getting out of their record deal, they’ve been very candid about the degree to which Dangerbird didn’t deliver on anything it had promised. In that time, several close friends of Victorino and Giusti passed away.

In 2011, the band’s success continued to climb while Victorino bottomed out emotionally.

Struggling with bipolar disorder, he attempted to end his life and was eventually hospitalized. He wrote about the entire incident in his book, Trading Sunshine for Shadows.

“To have eight of your friends die in less than two years, in separate instances, it’s pretty fucking strange.

You can’t go write ‘Very Busy People’ again after that. You can’t go be happy. Things change,” Victorino says.

The only song to make it on to Hush from the early demos was “Haunted,” about not being able to stop thinking about someone. Of all the band’s songs, “Haunted” marks the biggest change in direction for the Limousines.

When Victorino sat down to write the lyrics for Get Sharp, he methodically assembled clever stanzas, played with rhyme schemes and remained fully aware of the meaning behind each line.

“Haunted” was different.

“I was walking, and all the words just came into my head,” Victorino recalls. “I called Gio, and I told him, ‘I have to come over, and we have to work on it.’ I just blurted the song out. I get chills thinking about it now. We were both really moved by the outpouring of it.”

At the time, the meaning of the words were a mystery to Victorino—something he hadn’t allowed himself to do with the Limousines, though he did do so years earlier with his previous band, Strata.

“I used to never think about the words, because I grew up worshiping Kurt Cobain and watching all his interviews and knowing that most of the time he

didn’t know what he was talking about, but he knew it was coming from somewhere. And it was just as valid. It doesn’t matter where it’s coming from,” Victorino says.

This experience shaped Hush, allowing it to be an album that came from their hearts and not their heads. Rather than being clever or sarcastic, Hush is honest and vulnerable.

Over three years, Victorino and Giusti also got to know each other a lot better. They previously recorded all their songs by emailing tracks back and forth to each other and never working in the same room together. With Hush, working in the studio together has allowed them to discuss ideas and be much more collaborative.

“I think now that we’ve gotten to know each other, we’ve come close enough and worked together as artists, it’s OK for him to see my process, and it’s OK for me to see his,” Victorino says. “It used to be a mystery. I never even saw him make music before. I had no idea how he did it.”

Over a week, she suggests jotting down how long tasks actually take, including hidden time costs (such as travel

time, cleanup time and interruption time). And because life tends to have more snags than a bad girl’s tights, she advises building in “cushion time”—an extra 20 percent on top of the time you think a task will take.

Chronic inconsideration, even when it isn’t intentional, chips away at a relationship. Explain that you understand that her chronic lateness isn’t an attack on you, but if there is “one more thing” she could squeeze in, perhaps it could be the thought of how you feel sitting all alone in a restaurant, keeping busy by searching for coded messages woven into the tablecloth.

Wherever your power spots are, I advise you to give them extra focus. They are on the verge of serving you even better than they usually do, and you should take steps to ensure that happens. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): Reverence is one of the most useful emotions. When you respectfully acknowledge the sublime beauty of something greater than yourself, you do yourself a big favor. SCORPIO (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): When explorer Ernest Shackleton was planning his expedition to Antarctica in 1914, he placed this ad in London newspapers: “Wanted: For hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, return doubtful. Honor and recognition in case of success.” Would you respond to a come-on like that if you saw it today? I hope not. It’s true that your sense of adventure is ratcheting up. And I suspect you’re itching for intense engagement with the good kind of darkness that in the past has inspired so much smoldering wisdom. But I believe you can satisfy those yearnings without putting yourself at risk or suffering severe deprivation.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): “I’d rather not sing than sing quiet,” said the vivacious chanteuse Janis Joplin. Her attitude reminds me a little of Salvador Dali’s. He said, “It is never difficult to paint. It is either easy or impossible.” I suspect you Sagittarians may soon be in either-or states like those. You will want to give everything you’ve got, or else nothing at all. You will either be in the zone, flowing along in a smooth and natural groove, or else totally stuck.

Luckily, I suspect that giving it all and being in the zone will predominate.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): In 1948, Nelson Mandela began his fight to end the system of apartheid in his native South Africa. Eventually he was arrested for dissident activities and sentenced to life imprisonment. He remained in jail until 1990, when his government bowed to international pressure and freed him. By 1994, apartheid collapsed. Mandela was elected president of his country and won the Nobel Peace Prize. Fast-forward to 2008. Mandela was still considered a terrorist by the United States and had to get special permission to enter the country. Yikes! You probably don’t have an antiquated rule or obsolescent habit that’s as horrendous as that, Capricorn. But it’s past time for you to dissolve your attachment to any outdated attachments, even if they’re only mildly repressive and harmful.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): As a renowned artist, photographer, and fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld has overflowed with creative expression for 50 years. His imagination is weird and fantastic, yet highly practical.

He has produced a profusion of flamboyant stuff. “I’m very down to earth,” he has said, “just not this earth.”

Let’s make that your mantra for the coming weeks, Aquarius: You, too, will be very down to earth in your own unique way. You’ll follow your quirky intuition, but always with the intent of channeling it constructively.

PISCES (Feb. 19–March 20): In the following passage, French novelist Georges Perec invites us to renew the way we look upon things that are familiar to us. “What we need to question,” he says, “is bricks, concrete, glass, our table manners, our utensils, our tools, the way we spend our time, our rhythms.
