Local and state authorities June 4 found evidence of a suspected mountain lion attack in a Morgan Hill neighborhood, and are warning residents to be cautious when out with children and pets. Morgan Hill Police responded to a report of a deer carcass on Fountain Oaks Drive, east of U.S. 101, according to a press release from MHPD. The city's animal services officer met with the resident who reported the dead deer, and examined the small carcass. Police also notified the California Department of Fish and Game. Both the MHPD animal services officer and Fish and Game officials agreed the

More than 500 Morgan Hill Unified School District graduates took part in three different commencement ceremonies throughout town as the graduating class of 2019 earned their high school diplomas under sunshine
and warm temperatures during a picturesque week in South Valley. “The sentiment among the school staff, families and trustees here is nothing short of absolute pride, joy and optimism about the future,” said MHUSD Board President Mary Patterson, who sat front and center with her board colleagues as well as district and site staff during Friday’s back-to-back ceremonies at Live Oak and Ann
Sobrato high schools. “The Class of 2019 has earned that and more.” Sobrato High, with 265 graduates, kicked off the June 7 commencements with a 2pm ceremony followed by Live Oak High School, with 239 graduates, at 6pm later that same day on their respective campuses. Kelli St. Clair was the class of 2019 valedictorian and Brian Ho was the salutatorian for Live
Oak, while Jacob Lemoff and Jean Gorby Calicdan were the 2019 class co-valedictorians and Tiffany La was the salutatorian for Sobrato. A day earlier on June 6, 31 Central High School students were part of the 2019 outdoor celebration at Morgan Hill’s Downtown Amphitheater, earning their diplomas and advancing to the next chapter in their lives. In 2018, California suffered its most destructive fire season in history, with nearly 1.9 million acres burned.
The Camp Fire in Butte County, which burned in November, scorched more than 18,000 buildings and killed 85 people. With wildfires becoming deadlier every year, a Morgan Hill-based startup company is hoping home builders across the state will do away with combustible wood
structures and embrace non-flammable steel frames. Firefighting experts say an increase in steel residential construction could show some promise in reducing potential damage, death and injury from wildfires in the future. Yuhu Builders Corporation unveiled its
prototype home under construction on Armsby Lane in Morgan Hill June 6 during a presentation that drew city and fire officials, architects, insurance agents and others. The 6,000-square-foot home located on a hillside is custom designed and constructed using light gauge steel frames,
which are pre-fabricated at a factory and assembled on site, said Eugene Yu, founder and president of Yuhu Builders. A steel-framed home is not only fire-resistant, Yu said, but earthquake-resistant, termiteproof and mold-proof. ➝ Startup, 10

A San Mateo police officer who lives in Morgan Hill is accused of sexually explicit communications with a minor after he chatted with a social media user who posed as a 16-year-old girl, according to authorities. The San Jose Police Department's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force June 6 arrested Robert Davies, 40, on suspicion of contacting a minor to commit a felony, reads a press release from SJPD. The crime he is accused of is in itself a felony. On May 11, Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers received a tip from a concerned citizen who posed as a 16-yearold girl on several mobile social media applications, police said. The tipster chatted with an adult male about engaging in sexual activity, and later identified the adult as a police officer in the Bay Area. On May 13, detectives began an investigation and learned the tipster had created a fictitious account on Tinder, a mobile dating app, as a 19-year-old

Robert Davies female, but filtered the profile photo to appear as a young girl, police said. The tipster was aware that Tinder does not allow accounts for juveniles. Detectives learned that after the tipster began chatting with Davies on Tinder May 11, they switched to Kik, another mobile messaging app. In a Kik conversation, the tipster told Davies she was 16 years old, which Davies acknowledged, according to police. Davies then asked the tipster to move the chat to Snapchat, yet another mobile social media app, where they continued to discuss the user being 16. They chatted about engaging in sexual activity. During the follow-up investigation, detectives confirmed Davies’ identity and served search warrants on electronic devices and mobile applications, and on Davies’ residence, police said. Detectives obtained
a felony arrest warrant. The San Jose PD Covert Response Unit arrested Davies at his home in Morgan Hill, according to police. He was booked at Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of contacting a minor to commit a felony. According to Davies' Linkedin profile, he has been an officer at the San Mateo Police Department since 2015. He has also worked for the Burlingame and Redwood City police departments. Davies served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007. San Mateo Police Chief Susan Manheimer said in a statement, "This alleged conduct, if true, is in no way a reflection of all that we stand for as a department, and is an affront to the tenets of our department and our profession as a whole. As San Mateo police officers, we have sworn an oath to serve and protect our communities. I can assure you that we remain steadfast to this commitment to serving our community with 'Professionalism, Integrity and Excellence.'" Investigators pursued a potential lead in the case when they discovered a damaged vehicle parked in an industrial area of Gilroy June 5. However, police located and interviewed the registered owner of that car, and determined the vehicle was not involved in the June 4 collision. The man had succumbed to injuries suffered during a collision with an unknown vehicle, according to police. Investigators think the driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian fled the scene in a northbound direction on Monterey Road, police said. PEDESTRIAN DIED AS A RESULT OF SAN MARTIN COLLISION
An 18-year-old Gilroy man is accused of fleeing the scene when a juvenile passenger was ejected from the suspect's vehicle and died after an alleged DUI collision in south San Jose early Thursday morning. About 3:46am June 6, San Jose police responded to a report of a traffic collision with major injuries at Monterey Road and Palm Avenue, according to San Jose Police Sgt. Enrique Garcia. The initial investigation
found that a gold 1999 Toyota Camry traveling north on Monterey Road drifted into the southbound lanes and continued north near Palm Avenue, according to police. The Camry struck a center median cement guardrail, lost control and ejected the juvenile passenger from the rear seat. The car then collided into a roadside guardrail. A witness passing by stopped and contacted the occupants of the Camry to render aid, but the vehicle fled north in the southbound lanes, according to police. The witness also saw a juvenile male lying in the roadway. The juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. About the same time, California Highway Patrol officers were responding
to a call reporting a wrongway driver on Monterey Road at Palm Avenue. CHP officers located the Camry and made a traffic stop at Monterey Road and Bailey Avenue, about 1.5 miles from the original collision scene, according to San Jose police. Officers determined that alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the collision. The driver and passenger—both adult males— were detained, police said. The driver, Isael Velarde, 18, was arrested and booked at Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run, DUI causing injury, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving without a license. Velarde attended Christopher High School, according to his Facebook page.

Sheriff 's deputies and Morgan Hill police chased down three suspects—including a juvenile—and arrested them for firearms violations after someone reported shots fired in rural area west of town, according to authorities. About 10:30pm June 8, Santa Clara County Sheriff 's deputies received a call from a resident who heard several gunshots in the area of Oak Glen Avenue in unincorporated Morgan Hill, according to a Facebook post on the sheriff 's page. The resident also told police he or she saw a vehicle driving away with its headlights off. A sheriff 's sergeant checked the area and saw a vehicle speeding away from the scene, authorities said. The sergeant attempted to stop the
vehicle, though the driver initially refused to stop. A short vehicle pursuit occurred before the suspects’ vehicle spun out of control and struck a curb, according to authorities. Two of the three occupants ran away from the vehicle, and the third suspect was immediately taken into custody. Morgan Hill police officers assisted and found the other two fleeing suspects hiding in nearby bushes, police said. The suspects were later identified as Fili Alfaro, 18, Daniel Villarreal, 18, and a 17-year-old, police said. The younger suspect's name was not released because he is a juvenile. Upon searching the vehicle, deputies found a loaded handgun, assault rifle and ammunition inside, according to the sheriff 's post. Alfaro and Villarreal were booked at Santa Clara County Jail. The 17-yearold was booked at juvenile hall. All three are suspected of multiple felony and misdemeanor charges.

Council cuts staff positions in 2018-20 budget update CITY PREPARES FOR A SLOWING ECONOMY Jaqueline McCool Reporter
The Morgan Hill City Council approved a mid-cycle update to the 2018-20 budget at the June 5 meeting, eliminating the equivalent of 5.5 full-time positions and revising revenue projections. The update approval was unanimous, with council member John McKay absent for th vote. The council approved a twoyear budget in 2018. The June 5 vote was an update halfway through the approved budget. Maureen Tobin, the city’s communication and engagement director, told the Times in an emailed response what she believed the biggest changes were in the budget update. “The difference is we are projecting a higher revenue for fiscal year 2019-20 than projected in June 2018 ($1.8 million), with property tax as the most significant driver,” wrote Tobin. “At the same time, we have lowered our revenue projection in the out years beginning fiscal year 2021-22 due to the removal of the projected revenue from the transient occupancy tax for the two hotels that were successfully referrended as a result of the petition earlier this year and the sales tax revenue from a third car dealership that is no longer in the works.” Projected revenues were changed to $134.1 million from $132.3 million, and projected expenditures were updated to $136.5 from $135.5.
The general fund revenue was projected at approximately $43.2 million for 2019-2020. In budget cutbacks, the city will eliminate five fulltime equivalents, which means 5.5 positions or the monetary equivalent. Tobin said most of the positions are already vacant. “They include 2 FTEs from Administrative Services, 1.5 FTEs from Community Services, 1 FTE from Development Services, and 1 FTE from Engineering and Utilities. “The elimination of these FTEs is only one way the city has been strategic in our fiscal management, allowing us to provide high-quality service even though we receive the lowest taxes per capita in the county,” Tobin added. There were also eight reclassifications of positions, meaning the positions were promoted and received raises or reduced. According to the staff report budget update the following positions have been reclassified: • accountant to senior accountant • accounting manager to assistant to the city manager • communications and engagement manager to communications and engagement director • engineering and utilities inspector to engineering and utilities technician • information technology manager to information technology director • paralegal to legal specialist • senior planner to principal planner The budget presentation also notes that 77 percent of discretionary general fund

spending goes toward public safety. Tobin noted the city has not yet budgeted for additional police and fire staff that were recommended in the Public Safety Master Plan. She said no additional funding has been identified for the positions. “We have approximately $4 million of the total cost to build the third fire station in our Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget,” wrote Tobin. Tobin said that overall, the budget was adjusted to mirror slower economic growth. “We are keeping our projection of a slower growth in FY 2019-20 compared to the past years and continue with modest growth in the out years. It remains to be true that we will face challenges ahead,” said Tobin. “Our revenue growth projection is not keeping pace with expenditures, even with (eliminating 5.5 FTEs).”

Ride the river of life Class of 2019, it is hard to believe that 13 years ago, we started our first day of kindergarten, beginning a journey that eventually led us to where we are at this very moment. Today marks the end of one chapter of our lives and the beginning of another. Our life is a river. It’s the pathway to our future. It sweeps us along for the ride, taking us through its twists and turns. There’ll be times when the river is calm and just when you get used to it, it’ll suddenly take you down a rushing stream. Sometimes, life moves too fast for you to handle. So what do you do? You build a boat to sail down that river and you steer over the bumps and around the rocks as best as you can. If you choose not to steer the boat, it’ll never get to where you want it to go. So steer the boat, and conquer the river. I guess the biggest takeaway from my attempt at a profound analogy is to build boats and make sure you know how to swim. Before we conclude this chapter, I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us on this journey and helped us become the people we are today.

riends, family and staff, it is an honor to be here today, and I am extremely grateful for the pleasure of speaking on behalf of my fellow classmates. On our final day of public education, let us reminisce on all the good times we have had together. Thirteen years ago we were young children, letting go of our parents’ hands for the first time and meeting our first teachers. Thirteen years ago we met for the very first time, eyes wide and excited about the prospect of new playmates. Thirteen years ago we spent our days painting and playing tag around the blacktop of our elementary schools. Thirteen years ago, we thought our neighbors had cooties, and would run away from anyone who we thought was “it.” We learned to add, and spell, count and sing. Thirteen years ago today, we graduated kindergarten. Twelve years ago we entered the “big kid rooms,” and our classes became a number instead of a letter. Twelve years ago, we began learning different subjects: math, spelling, science. Ten years ago we learned multiplication, and we could finally go on the big kid playground. Six years ago we were “promoted” to middle school with six classes a day. And what a promotion that was. Four years ago we were “fresh meat,” terrified children with cracking voices and awkward clumsiness. Four years ago we were at our first day, scared of being shoved into lockers and beat up like we saw in "High School Musical." Four years ago we learned that high school isn’t nearly as scary as it’s made out to be. Four years ago we signed up for our very first AP classes, and three years ago we took our very first standardized test.

Two years ago we were stressing over who to ask to Sadie’s, and just last year we stayed up until 5:03am writing that eight-page research paper that we hadn’t started until the day it was due. This year, we spent hours applying to colleges and scholarships, hoping that all we have done in these four years would get us into the school of our dreams. Four months ago we learned of our acceptances, and just last month we chose where to spend the next few years of our lives. And today—today marks the first day of a new beginning. Today is the day your education is chosen of your own volition, and you may pursue any career you feel passionate about. Whether you decide to continue your schooling or start your career now, you finally have choices ahead of you. Never stop educating yourself, for it is the best investment you could ever make. No matter what you want to do, it is your choice to make. Become the artist you have always dreamed of being, or an engineer, a politician, a mechanic. Become a doctor and save lives, or become a school teacher and grow student minds. No matter what you deign to do, it is you that can make it into a successful career. Starting today, you choose who you want to be, so go out and make the best of it. It is finally time for us all to branch off from the trunk of the tree and carve our own path. Conquer fears, take chances Good Evening families, friends, and Central High's graduates of 2019! If you were to tell me during my freshman year of high school that I'd be standing here addressing all of you right now on our graduation day, I wouldn't have believed you. But that's the thing with second chances and opportunities: You don't always see them coming. When I was given the opportunity to attend Central, the first thought that ran through my head was fear of the unknown. I did not know what would happen if I decided to take this path, I did not know what this would bring to my success. The second thought in my head was the fear of failure, the fear of having another door shut in my face. Lastly, fear of judgment—I was afraid of what others would think of me because I was transferring to a new high school in the middle of my senior year. For us, being a student here and being a part of this environment has taught us so many things that we didn't know when we first started; this was nowhere near what we thought it would be. I believe we are learning that fear should not prevent one from taking chances, because it's really easy to follow the footsteps of those before us! We are learning to try and not let fear get in the way of opportunity or what it will bring to us because we are afraid of what the outcome will turn out to be, so be curious! Be ambitious, make mistakes and learn from them! We are learning to not be afraid of what others might think because at the end of the day those same people are intimidated by our potential, so be you, be great and make a difference! Class of 2019, we can do anything and we can be anything, but what we can't do is let fear get in the way of these pursuits because this world needs more people like us. Learning is what keeps us moving and fear is what holds back. So as we cross this stage tonight, let’s remember to always keep moving forward. Rattlesnake bites sheriff’s deputy INCIDENT OCCURRED DURING MARIJUANA ERADICATION EFFORT Staff report

Animal killed deer in MH bite marks and injuries on the deer carcass were “most likely caused by a mountain lion,” reads the MHPD release. “This is the first reported possible mountain lion event in 2019,” reads the press release. “The police department is working with the Department of Fish and Game on how to best address this situation.” Police are encouraging residents to report all mountain lion sightings. Because the areas surrounding Morgan Hill are considered prime mountain lion habitat, authorities want human residents to be aware of precautions everyone can take to keep themselves, families and pets safe. The following advice is offered in the MHPD press release: • Do not hike alone; hike in groups when possible, with adults supervising children. • Parents should keep children close. Observations of captured wild mountain lions have revealed that the animals are drawn to small children. Keep children within sight at all times.
• Do not approach a mountain lion. Most mountain lions try to avoid a confrontation. Give them a way to escape. • Do not run from a mountain lion; running may trigger the animal's instinct to chase. If you encounter a mountain lion, stand and face the animal and make eye contact, police advise. If you have small children with you, pick them up if possible so they do not panic and run. “Although it may be awkward, pick (the child) up without bending over or turning away from the mountain lion,” reads the press release. • Do not crouch down or bend over. In Nepal, a researcher studying tigers and leopards watched the big cats kill cattle and domestic water buffalo while ignoring humans standing nearby, police explained. He surmised that a human standing up is not the right shape for a cat’s prey. On the other hand, a person squatting or bending over looks more like a four-legged prey animal. If you are in mountain lion country, avoid squatting, crouching or bending over, even when picking up children.

• Try to appear larger. Raise your arms, and open your jacket if you are wearing one. Again, pick up small children. Throw stones, branches or whatever you can reach without crouching or turning your back. Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly in a loud voice. The idea is to convince the mountain lion that you are not prey and that you may be a danger to it. • Fight back if attacked. A hiker in Southern California used a rock to fend off a mountain lion that was attacking his son, reads the press release. Others have fought back successfully with sticks, caps, jackets, garden tools and their bare hands. Since a mountain lion usually tries to bite the head or neck, try to remain standing and face the attacking animal. Residents can report mountain lion sightings and encounters to the Morgan Hill Police Department by calling (408) 779-2101. A Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was bitten by a rattlesnake while on a marijuana eradication assignment, according to authorities. The deputy was bitten 1pm June 6 in a rural area of San Antonio Valley Road, east of Mount Hamilton in unincorporated Morgan Hill, according to a press release from the sheriff 's office. Deputies assigned to the sheriff 's Marijuana Eradication Team were conducting an operation in the area at the time. One of the deputies was bitten on his leg by a rattlesnake while hiking through the remote area, authorities said. A CALSTAR ambulance was dispatched due to the terrain and location of the call. After he was bitten, the deputy and his team hiked about one mile back to their vehicle before driving to the helicopter landing zone. About 1:49pm, CALSTAR arrived and airlifted the deputy via helicopter to a local hospital. The deputy is in stable condition and is being treated by medical staff. The MET team was initially scouting the area for possible marijuana grows and found infrastructures of a recently used grow, according to the sheriff's press release. They located a large amount of trash, camping supplies, hundreds of yards of irrigation pipe and large areas of trees and brush that had been cut down and removed to make space for the garden. The press release adds, “As a safety reminder to all, rattlesnakes are known to be out more frequently during hot summer days. Be cautious and aware of where you are stepping during hikes, and wear protective clothing.”

The exterior of the prototype home consists of wall panels manufactured by Hebel Metal, which are layered with aerated concrete that can withstand fire for up to four hours, according to the German manufacturer. "We have hosted visitors at our prototype site every week for the last six months, and they all prove the same point: Seeing is believing," said Rick Pearce, vice president of operations at Yuhu Builders. "By using our prototype home as an example, our intention is to give a firsthand view of the materials, processes and technologies that will soon transform the way homes are built in California." But getting the wooddominated industry to catch on will prove to be a challenge, Yu said. While steel frames are common in commercial construction, they have not taken off in the residential sector, he said, primarily due to costs. While Yu declined to give an estimate of how much the steel home costs per square foot compared to a traditional wood construction, he said he was confident that the cost of future installations would be equivalent to if not cheaper than wood, as the one-time research and development costs were
expensive for the prototype home. Morgan Hill Fire Marshal Dwight Good said that while he was still learning about the techniques used to construct the home, he noted that it is a good start in preventing the spread of wildfire. “This is encouraging,” he said. “Having fire-resistant construction and techniques is critical in a place like this.” Mayor Rich Constantine, a retired San Jose firefighter, said he was impressed by the home, and added that such a structure could be used as a refuge for firefighters during major wildfires. “If this was implemented throughout the industry, it could not only save property, it could help save lives as well,” he said. With the weather beginning to heat up, fire season is underway across the state. “We’re bracing for as bad or worse than what we saw last year,” Good said at the June 6 press conference. Later in the week, on June 9, fire agencies battled their first significant wildfire in Santa Clara County— the 210-acre Malech Fire on Malech Road north of Morgan Hill. As of June 10, that fire was more than 85 percent contained. Good said a fire-resistant home is only half the battle when preparing for wildfire. “Landscape design and maintenance is so critical,” Good said.

with an all-steel frame. Yuhu Builders Corporation unveiled the prototype home during a presentation on June 6. Cal Fire advises residents to create “defensible space” around their homes by doing the following: Within 30 feet from structures: • Remove all dead or dying vegetation. • Trim tree canopies regularly to keep branches a minimum of 10 feet from structures and other trees. • Remove leaf litter (dry leaves/pine needles) from yard, roof and rain gutters.
• Relocate woodpiles or other combustible materials to areas 30 to 100 feet away. • Remove combustible material and vegetation from around and under decks. • Remove or prune vegetation near windows. • Remove “ladder fuels” (low-level vegetation that allows the fire to spread from the ground to the tree canopy). Create a separation between low-level
vegetation and non-vegetative materials such as patio furniture, wood piles, swing set, etc., from tree branches. This can be done by reducing the height of low-level vegetation and/ or trimming low tree branches. Within 30 to 100 feet of structures: • Remove “ladder fuels.” • Cut or mow annual grass down to a maximum height of four inches.
• Trim tree canopies regularly to keep their branches a minimum of 10 feet from other trees. • Loose surface litter, normally consisting of fallen leaves or needles, twigs, bark, cones and small branches, shall be permitted to a depth of three inches if erosion control is an issue. to always work hard, not in the hopes of making more money but because your work ethic is a reflection of your character. I learned from my mom, Ms. Andrade, that not all superheroes wear capes. There’s nothing she can’t do and in turn taught me—and you guys—that there’s nothing we can’t do either. Seriously, the woman is difficult to please. Is it just me? I’ve learned from my sister as she struggles through high school to not let others’ opinions define who you are. Instead, be the happiest that you can be because your thoughts create your
feelings. And we all want to feel happy. And finally, something I’ve learned recently: Class of 2019, we don’t need to have everything figured out step by step. We have time. The next decade of our lives should be about discovering what makes us happy. I don’t know about you guys but being done with high school, really, really, really makes me happy. Am I right? But there are some valuable lessons that school didn’t teach or prepare us for. And tonight, I am thankful for this opportunity to share with my classmates five life lessons I’ve learned from five different family members to guide us through the journey of life. I learned at a young age from my papa to always stay true and honest with yourself. Or as he would say, “Listen man, this is your only life; you can either live a lie or you can live your truth.” I learned as I went to work for my uncle in his shop, Frank’s Auto Service, watching all the different people that walked in, and how many different people he knew, I learned that it isn’t about what you know, but rather who you know. Class of 2019: Ann Sobrato High School LET LIFE'S CHALLENGES DRIVE YOU Jean Gorby Calicdan

I want to start off this speech with a very, very strong statement I heard the other day. It went something like, “Wow. Life really sucks.” And ya know, sadly I really can’t disagree. Life is hard; therefore, life sucks. I mean, if life was easy, we would all be going to Stanford this fall, agree? If life was easy, none of us would be diagnosed with serious diseases—like senioritis. If life was easy, we would all look like Matt Damon and Beyoncé (though to be perfectly honest, all you human beings right now look absolutely beautiful).
MEET MORE PEOPLE, STAY IN TOUCH
And that’s the catch—it was never meant to be easy. But ironically, that’s also what makes it all the more fun and meaningful! When Ms. Gharibyan told us we needed to make a music video? I ended up making four (check out youtube. com/jeangorby). Sure it didn’t sound like "High School Musical," but it was the challenge that drove me, and it’s now one of my fondest memories from high school. So before we, the Class of 2019, depart and begin our new lives, I want to challenge each and every one of you one last time—not to make music videos, unless you’re YungWawo. But to face the challenges that make life difficult and defeat them once and for all.

I think I’ve had a pretty all-around high school experience. I’ve felt really good and bad moments I’ll remember forever. Things I’ve done I’m incredibly proud of and not, and things I wish I did or said and didn’t. But I do really regret not getting to know more of you, ya know. I’ve gotten to know many cool people in such a short amount of time, and I’ve realized that’s one of the most important things you can do— get to know people. Get to know people like Gorby and Tiffany, and they show you that you’re not as awesome as you think you are. Get to know people like Sebastien and Chris and Davis and Shane and Kyle, and they show you what it’s like to have more siblings.
Get to know people like Zaria and Tara and Sabrina, and they make you a better person. Get to know people like Kimme and Trinity and Naomi and you feel less alone. Wherever you end up, get to know people, many people, and your life will be better for it. But it’s also important to stay in contact with those who matter. When I moved here from West Virginia, my friends and I didn’t do a great job staying in contact, and that was really hard. So wherever we end up, wherever our future takes us, please remember, Class of 2019, to keep in touch. Thank you. We are gathered here today to commemorate all those who have worked so hard and diligently these past four years. It has been a remarkable chapter in all of our lives and a chapter that I am more than proud to have shared with all of you. As this year’s salutatorian, I am honored to stand before you today and congratulate the class of 2019.
Take a good look around you. Take a moment to appreciate this time with your friends and family. There will not be another moment like this. Blink again, and you’ll be at your college graduation. Blink again, and you’ll be walking down the aisle. Blink again, you’ll be welcoming your first child into the world for the first time. Blink again, and you’ll be at your child’s high school graduation just as your parents are right now. Do not fear, however, as all of you have many more years ahead of you. I know
that in those years, there’s nothing that good old-fashioned hard work cannot accomplish. Although it will pain me to see everyone that I’ve known for years carry on, I cannot wait to see all of you embark on your own journeys through life and find what makes you happy. Parents, take a good look at your children and be proud of what they have accomplished during their time here at Live Oak High School. I hope you are as happy as they are for their futures. Many of us will be going on to college to
pursue careers. Many of us are going to wonderful and prestigious schools such as UCLA, Berkeley, Davis, Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and San Jose State. The passion and hope that these students have for their dreams and their future studies clearly demonstrates that the future is in good hands. I have faith that these students will become the future’s engineers, business owners, designers, doctors and lawyers. What I ask of all of you from this day forward is to never lose sight of what you want to accomplish.
Life will show you no mercy—it’s inevitable. You will face hardships, speed bumps and times where things may seem impossible. Parents in the audience understand exactly what I am talking about. There will be times when you want to give up. However, never settle for anything less than what you would consider a successful and wonderful life. Never give in to the doubts that hold you back from reaching the stars. Life shows no mercy, so neither do we. Life is meant to be
conquered by each and every one of you standing with me today. As a final note, I would like to say that it has been a great honor being an alumnus of this campus and delivering this important message to you today. Once again, I congratulate the class of 2019 and I thank everyone present for attending this very special moment in our lives. For two former local high school standouts, one person’s athletic journey will continue while the other has ended. So it is for Madison Gallagher and Kayla Rooney, who last month helped lead the San Jose City College softball team to the California Community College State Final Eight. Gallagher, a former Live Oak High standout, has narrowed down her choices to play for either St. Mary’s or Sacramento State. Rooney, a former Sobrato High standout, will transfer to San Jose State. However, Rooney has chosen not to pursue playing at the four-year level, instead focusing on academics amid a neck injury that causes prolonged pain during athletic activities. Another former Sobrato High standout, Sam Brenny, played a vital role on a powerhouse Jaguars team that finished 38-6 (look for a profile on Brenny during the 2020 season). Gallagher and Rooney have similar stories. They both attended a four-year college out of high school—Gallagher at Ohio Valley University in West Virginia and Rooney at Cal State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB)—before finding their way to San Jose City. A 2017 Live Oak High graduate, Gallagher earned a bevy of honors this past season, including state co-player of the year and All-American honors as a utility player, with her best position being at pitcher.
Gallagher had a spectacular season, ranking in the top four in the state in average, home runs, RBIs, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. The team’s co-ace along with Stefanie Troja, Gallagher also was a force in the circle, finishing 17-2. “I definitely went into the season not expecting to do as well as I did,” she said. “I went in more focused on doing well and helping the team reach state, which was our biggest goal. I kind of got lucky to put up some of the numbers I did.” Gallagher was being rather modest, and needed to be prodded to explain the factors for her success. She pointed to being an active listener and taking the advice of the SJC coaching staff, which translated to producing some eye-popping numbers. “I could not hit the outside pitch to save my life before the season started,” she said. “So during the season our hitting coach worked with me and once conference started, I got it and felt I mastered it. I’m always challenging myself to improve in some area of my game.” Debbie Huntze-Rooney, who was named the state’s co-coach of the year and recently completed her 28th season as the SJC coach, was effusive in her praise for Gallagher, who was the team’s cleanup hitter and could pretty much hit any pitch thrown her way, as her unbelievable .578 average attests. “Maddie is definitely one of the top three hitters we’ve ever had in my 28 years of coaching here,” Huntze-Rooney said. “Maddie has the ability to see a pitch, make the necessary adjustments and make good swings.” Gallagher said her game— both mentally and physically— has matured a lot since her high school days, as she started taking the game more seriously

College State co-player of the year honors along with national All-American recognition. once she got to college. Gallagher played her freshman year at Ohio Valley, but felt something was amiss. She transferred to San Jose City feeling it was the right time to come home, and things turned out better than even she expected. “I didn’t want the season to
end because I loved that team so much,” she said. “I’m so proud of us making it to state, and I kind of wish I could play all four years of college here. It’s a great environment with a great coaching staff and just an amazing place to play.” Kayla is the daughter of Debbie, and neither will forget the
amazing experience they had as mom and daughter being on a championship level team. Kayla, a 2015 Sobrato High graduate, played her freshman season at CSUMB before having to take a medical redshirt for her sophomore year. She ended her career in style, in the state tourney.

errill Zimmershead, age 75, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 30, 2019, in his home in Gilroy, CA.
She lived a long, beautiful life and will forever be in our hearts. “Your presence we miss, your memory we treasure. Merrill was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 1, 1943. He moved frequently throughout his childhood due to his father’s military career. He was a self-described “Navy Brat.” He attended high school in San Diego, CA and graduated in 1961. Merrill worked in various positions in the Bay Area, including the Santa Clara Fire Department. He married in 1971 and moved to Gilroy in 1976. He proudly earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, built a thriving law office and practiced as an attorney for over 35 years in Gilroy. Merrill had a big heart and often did work pro-bono for those in need. In spite of his chosen vocation, Merrill was beloved by those who knew him both personally and professionally. He would often greet friends and clients with a wide grin and a terrible joke. In his younger years he was an avid traveler who loved to visit historical sites and vacation in tropical climates. Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Mexico were among his favorite destinations. He was also an active member of the community volunteering his time for various community projects and fundraisers. His volunteer time was varied and included, but not limited to, heading the financial branch of the Gilroy Garlic Festival. No matter the circumstance in which he found himself, Merrill was an eternal optimist, choosing to see the bright side in life. He has joined his father, Clarence “Red” Eugene Zimmershead and his mother, Hazel Josephine Zimmershead. Merrill is survived by his sisters Margaret Harmon and Hazel Zepeda and his children: Denise Gluhan, Michael Zimmershead, Matthew Zimmershead, Melody Gebhardt, Maxwell Zimmershead, and Megan Valenzuela, as well as 14 of his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne L. Conrotto, and their son, Duane L. Conrotto. He leaves his second wife, Katherine Conrotto, his granddaughters, Tjiska Elaine and Kimberly Clare, and his daughter-in-law Karen Conrotto. Conrotto earned a degree in anthropology from Stanford University after which he began a 17-year journalism career. He was editor of Desert Magazine (where he received a California State Fair Gold Medal in Journalism) and the Palm Desert Post. He was a former president of the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce. After moving to Sonora in 1967, he earned a Master’s Degree in English at Stanislaus State University. He taught at Oakdale High School from 1972 to 1992. He was chairman of the English Department there, and introduced Advanced Placement and GATE to the school. He is the author of numerous magazine articles and books, including, Miwok Means People.
