Britton Middle School recently launched its new online store for local families and Bobcat supporters to purchase anything from physical education clothes and spirit gear to yearbooks and dance tickets.

The online store is the brainchild of longtime physical education teacher and coach Jim Green, who wanted to make the purchase process easier for parents.

“Instead of having to give your child cash or a check to bring to school, you can just purchase what you need online and then they just bring the receipt or show me on their phone,” said Green, who coaches softball, girls basketball and boys basketball at Britton.

“It’s huge for the community, parents and anyone who would love to donate to the Home and School Club so we can still support the teachers and students in their activities,” said second-year Home and School Club President Jennifer Uyeda-Allen.

The Home and School Club helps boost staff and administrative morale with monthly goodies, breakfast/lunches and teacher appreciation week. The parent volunteers also purchase teacher and medical supplies, while also sponsoring Britton’s World Cultural Day, last day of school fun day, school dances and staff/ student dodgeball game.

“We are hoping that

it’s going to take off,” Uyeda-Allen said of the online store. “It just simplifies the process.”

Due to ongoing construction on the Britton campus, the annual carnival, which is Britton’s only fundraiser, won’t take place this year. The carnival usually pays for the upcoming year’s school events.

Uyeda-Allen said she wasn’t sure if the carnival will come back at all, so online donations are crucial in supporting Britton.

“We want to encourage people to donate to the Home and School Club through the new online web store,” Green said. “Our Home and School Club is such a bonus to what we do.”

Green hopes to help support the other Morgan Hill Unified School District schools in creating their own online stores.

Loyal readers of the Morgan Hill Times and its sister publications might have noticed that the newspapers’ newsstand vending machines scattered around town are gone. But there’s no need to worry, as the newsracks have been replaced by brand-new machines placed in centralized locations in and around downtown Morgan Hill.

The new public newsstands can be found at three locations: on Third Street across from the Third Street Garage plaza; next to the old train depot/ Jonty’s Vietnamese Eatery, 17300 Depot Street; and in front of the post office, 16600 Monterey Road.

These racks also offer the Metro and South Valley Magazine each week.

The price of the Times —$1 in change—has not changed. In addition to the public newsstands, the Times can be purchased at select grocery and convenience stores throughout town. And, as always, readers can sign up for an annual home delivery subscription.

The removal of the old public newsracks and upgrade to new ones is the result of a program approved by the Morgan Hill City Council to limit the disorganized presence of aging, broken and often empty newspaper machines owned by a variety of regional publications. A September city staff report notes that as of June, there were 39 individual newsracks— owned by 16 different publications—in 10 different areas in Morgan Hill. Fifteen of these were “empty or abandoned,” and only two of the publications maintain an active business license in Morgan Hill.

City staff claim the previous abundance of newsracks in some locations created congestion or obstacles on public sidewalks, resulting in the potential for safety issues.

The purpose of the Newsrack Consolidation Program is “to eliminate sidewalk clutter and improve safety,” according to city staff.

“The newsrack program will allow the city to better manage what happens in the public rightof-way,” reads the September report to the council, which approved the program unanimously.

The program does not regulate newsracks located on private property. Those at the three areas listed above are owned by the City of Morgan Hill, and publishers must pay a fee and conform to the city’s business guidelines in order to use the new racks.

A renewed push to get permanent bleachers and lights at Ann Sobrato High School is facing the same major roadblock that it has for more than a decade: San Jose’s Greenline/Urban Growth Boundary.

Morgan Hill Unified School District Superintendent Steve Betando recently met with San Jose officials to discuss the issue, days after vandals drove a vehicle onto the Sobrato football field off Burnett Avenue and spun doughnuts.

The field was so torn up that games were moved to Live Oak High School for one weekend. An access gate was left open after the temporary bleachers were taken down and transported offsite as they are each weekend after home games.

Betando hoped to turn the unfortunate and costly event—the district paid thousands for new sod to be rolled out in time for the following week’s homecoming games—into a positive action for Sobrato’s student body.

However, no new developments have been reported in the district’s push to bring weekly “Friday Night Lights” football games to the Morgan Hill high school.

Sobrato football coach Tony Holmes said the team is put at a disadvantage by not having regular Friday

night home games. In 2016, after being granted approval and renting portable lights, Sobrato had its first evening home game. Ticket and concession sales were at an alltime high in comparison to the Saturday daytime games, according to Holmes.

“We had the largest turnout for a home game ever,” said Holmes, who took over the football program in 2015.

“It was a great experience and opportunity for us.”

The next season, Sobrato played four Friday night games, renting lights and bleachers each time.

“The district is spending large amounts of money on these rentals,” said Holmes, adding that the cost to rent lights jumped from $1,880 to $2,550 per game the second year. “It’s costly for the program. It’s costly for the school. It requires a lot of man hours. We have to set up and break down the lights.”

Local open space advocates, however, believe that inconvenience pales in comparison to preserving the rural land meant for agriculture and wildlife—and no manmade development of any kind—within San Jose’s protected greenbelt.

“What it really comes down to is the greenbelt is intended to maintain the rural (landscape) for agriculture or open space,” said Alice Kaufman, a legislative advocacy director with the Committee for Green Foothills.

“To make an exception for this would just open the gates to, ‘What about housing? We have a housing crisis. What about this and that?’”

Kaufman said she has met with Betando several times to discuss the district’s

But she said the district “would have to overcome a lot of barriers to do what they want.”

MHUSD district staff has had more than a dozen meetings or conference calls since August 2015 with various entities, including members of Green Foothills, the county’s Open Space Authority, the City of San Jose and also City Councilman Sergio Jimenez, to state their case for upgrading the Sobrato football field. They hoped the latest incident of vandalism would help their cause.

Greenbelt Alliance, said the only way the restrictions could be lifted is by another vote by San Jose residents or major revisions to the city’s general plan.

“Before this high school was built, they made certain environmental promises,” Schmidt said. “Now that those promises are not convenient, they want to change them.”

In that agreement, made on Aug. 31, 2001, three years prior to Sobrato’s opening, the school district agreed to “make arrangements to effectuate the open space portion of the high school project and to preserve, to the greatest extent possible, the integrity of the Sobrato site as open space which will

thereafter be utilized consistently with San Jose and Morgan HIll greenbelt policies.” The agreement also set guidelines for building expansion to accommodate increased enrollment at the school.

Sobrato, which opened in September 2004, was built on the border of Morgan Hill and San Jose in the area known as the Greenline, or Greenbelt, where development is restricted. The campus, which sits on the Morgan Hill side of the border, is outside the restricted area but the athletic fields fall within it, inside the city limits of San Jose.

In 2000, 81.4 percent of San Jose voters approved Measure K, which enacted

policies of the San Jose 2020 General Plan that “protect the city’s greenbelt, hillsides and baylands from urban development,” it states. The measure also “affirmed with a requirement that (those policies) may only be repealed or amended by the voters of the City of San Jose.”

Those rules prevent any permanent structures from being built inside the greenbelt beyond those that are already there.

“It has a very big impact on our kids, playing in front of friends, family and the student body” on Friday night Holmes said. “Traditionally, playing under the lights on Friday night is what everyone wants. ... The biggest difference is the support we get.”

hereas, it has long been our custom to commemorate Nov. 11, the anniversary of the ending of World War I, by paying tribute to the heroes of that tragic struggle and by rededicating ourselves to the cause of peace; and Whereas, in the intervening years the United States has been involved in two other great military conflicts, which have added millions of veterans living and dead to the honor rolls of this Nation; and Whereas, the Congress passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926 calling for the observance of Nov. 11 with appropriate ceremonies, and later provided in an act approved May 13, 1938 that the 11th of November should be a legal holiday and should known as Armistice Day and Whereas, in order to expand the significance of that commemoration and in order that a grateful nation might pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this nation, the Congress, by an act approved June 1, 1954, changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day; Now, therefore, I, Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America, do hereby call upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, Nov. 11, 1954, as Veterans Day. On that day, let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain. I also direct the appropriate

officials of the government to arrange for the display of the flag of the United States all public buildings on Veterans Day. Plastic pollution poses a growing threat to our oceans, coastlines and waterways.

To raise awareness about this issue, I authored Senate Concurrent Resolution 139, which proclaims the month of November as “No Straw November” in the State of California.

Shelby O’Neil, Jr., Ocean Guardian founder, created the No Straw November initiative for her 2017 Girl Scout of America Gold Award Project. The initiative includes a pledge to refuse single-use plastic straws during the entire month and to keep a tally of how many straws you eliminated from potentially ending up in the ocean.

In the United States, there is an average of 200 pounds per person of plastic waste created each year. From the time plastic production took off in the 1950s until now, over 8 billion tons of plastic have been produced; of that amount, 6.3 billion tons has been discarded; and of that amount, only 9 percent has been recycled.

The equivalent of a full dump truck of plastic enters global oceans every minute.

Plastic does not biodegrade. While it may break down into smaller pieces over time, it never goes away. Scientists are finding plastic all over the ocean, from polar ice caps, to gyres, to the stomachs of marine life. An estimated 700 species of marine animals have been reported to have eaten or become entangled in plastic.

Many companies and cities have joined in the effort to reduce the usage of not only single use plastic straws, but other single use plastics as well. Starbucks, Alaska Airlines, Disney and Hyatt Hotel are a few of the large corporations that have made commitments to reduce their plastic footprint, and the cities of San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz and Carmel have instituted “straws upon request” policies or bans.

There are many ways you can help to reduce plastic pollution. Pass up drinks in single use plastic bottles and avoid other single use plastics when possible.

Recycle, shop with reusable bags, and try to purchase products with non-plastic packaging. Support restaurants that offer biodegradable take-out containers and utensils, and join me as we pledge to take part in a “No Straw November!” Together, we can reduce plastic pollution and protect California’s beautiful oceans, coastlines, and waterways.

Clean Energy signs solar contracts AGREEMENT ON RENEWABLE ENERGY HELPS MONTEREY BAY COMMUNITY POWER AGENCY Staff Report

Silicon Valley Clean Energy has signed two longterm agreements for the largest utility-scale, solarplus-storage projects to be built in California, for community power agencies serving Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister.

The two projects will provide 153 megawatts (MW) of solar and 47 MW of storage and will be developed by EDF Renewables North America and Recurrent Energy Development Holdings, LLC. These projects are due to come online in 2021 and harness enough energy to power 39,000 homes annually.

Building storage in addition to solar turns the sun’s energy into a resource that can be used on demand, rather than only when the sun is shining.

These projects will combine solar panels with large batteries to store energy that the sun produces during the day so that more clean energy can be discharged onto the grid during times of high energy usage in the evening.

“We are excited to help California lead the transition to clean, reliable and flexible energy,” said Girish Balachandran,

CEO of Silicon Valley Clean Energy. “These new renewable energy projects are a significant investment toward reaching our state’s carbon-free energy goals and contribute to solving the state’s grid integration problem by investing in large gridscale energy storage.”

The contracts are the result of a competitive bidding process that began in September 2017. The collaboration of SVCE, which serves Santa Clara County, with its neighboring Community Choice Energy agency, Monterey Bay Community Power, which serves San Benito County, took advantage of economies of scale for the combined four counties, allowing for more purchasing power to invest in these long-term agreements. The two agencies issued a joint RFO that received more than 80 offers for new projects that were in various stages of development.

One project, developed

by Recurrent, will be built in Kings County and will provide 150 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity, plus 45 MW of storage, for 15 years. The solar project, developed by EDF, will be built in Kern County, providing 128 MW of solar capacity and 40 MW of storage under a 20-year agreement. These projects will support approximately 840 jobs during construction. SVCE will receive 55 percent of the output, and MBCP will receive 45 percent.

The annual “Safe Trick or Treat” event is sponsored by the City of Morgan Hill and the Downtown Association.

Authorities closed the downtown streets to vehicle traffic

so children—disguised as ghosts, monsters, superheroes, clowns, cartoon characters, animals and a wide variety of getups—could roam freely as they sought Halloween candy.

Downtown merchants, many also in costume, handed out candy and other treats to the festive children. Some hosted free games in the street for those who wanted a break from their candy binge.

On Oct. 27 the Morgan Hill Rotary teamed up with Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley to pull up their sleeves and get some work done helping local homeowners make needed repairs. Together with hundreds of other volunteers in the area, they worked to rehabilitate a local home, free of cost. For homeowner Tom Hernandez of Morgan Hill, the difference was night and day.

“This saved me a lot of time and a lot of money,” said Hernandez. “My plan was to do it over a couple of years, a few sections at a time, but I’m 63; I have a bad back and a bad ankle."

The Morgan Hill Rotary gained an advance idea of potential projects in the community, and decided which one to work on based on how many volunteers they could enlist and the nature of the project. On Saturday, they repainted a home at a mobile home park off

Burnett Avenue. Of the 18 volunteers working that day, seven were Rotarians.

“Part of Rotary is service above self,” Rotarian Judy Henry said. “I like to get down and dirty to do this stuff.”

Lynn Alens, a house captain volunteer with Rebuilding Together, was on scene to help with the painting. While looking for a volunteer opportunity, Alens decided to work with Rebuilding Together following some time with Habitat With Humanity.

“If you took a picture of the house this morning and compared it to right now, it would be night and day,” said Alens, a contractor from Campbell.

The painting project was one of the Rotary’s more straightforward projects since it didn’t require work on the home’s interior. Other projects aren’t as simple.

“The one we did in April in this park, we had to redo the stairs and replace toilets. It just depends on the scope of the project,” Henry said.

Rebuilding Together is a nonprofit organization founded in 1973 in Midland, Texas, where a small group of volunteers came together to help people in

Hernandez, who suffers from a bad back and who couldn’t afford the paint, was amazed and grateful for the work. their community repair homes that had fallen into disrepair. Homes that qualify are typically owned by elderly, disabled and/ or lower-income residents.

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley was formed in 1991, and since its foundation, the organization

helped to rehabilitate nearly 3,000 homes.

“To some people it’s overwhelming; they can’t imagine 20 people coming to work on their house for a day,” Alens said. “The response you get from the people you’re helping is very rewarding.”

It was a day of service

in Gilroy as well, where the Gilroy Rotary Club did some work on homes on Murray Avenue.

Several local businesses chipped in to help with donated pizza from Little Caesar’s and Starbucks coffee.

In recognition for her

volunteer work, Henry was awarded a necklace made of cut PVC pipe rings gifted

by Rotarian Roger Knopf.

For her, the work is done with love for Morgan Hill.

He may not be the Wizard of Menlo Park, but for semi-retired Morgan Hill resident Erick Garcia, good ideas never die.

And Garcia has many, many ideas.

Garcia claims to have invented a drink that stops the aging process (more on that below), a new form of harnessing electricity and a new machine that he believes could revolutionize how communities fight against flooding. The latter is the C15/60 Rapid Barricade Deployment System, a mobile device that fills and forms sandbag walls to help control floods.

To Garcia, 72, Hurricane Michael, which caused 36 deaths and billions of dollars of property damage, is a perfect example of how his invention could aid in containing floodwater, potentially replacing emergency workers hurriedly filling and placing sandbags by hand.

In Morgan Hill, the invention could make it much easier for residents in need of sandbags during the occasional torrential winter storm that can bring flooding to the city’s downtown and other

neighborhoods that sit in a floodplain.

Currently, the city and water district offer sandbag materials, but they must be filled by hand with a shovel.

The C15/60 is a vehicle on tracks, like a tank, with a plow and hopper system that collects on-hand material like sand and deposits it into a machine, mounted on the vehicle that automatically fills 100-pound sandbags. The machine then lays the sandbags in a row, dropped from a conveyor belt on the rear end of the vehicle.

Garcia believes the C15/60’s portability, efficiency and rapidity can save both lives and property. It’s an idea that's been in the works for over 40 years. There is no working prototype of the C15/60.

The concept for the vehicle is laid out in a glossy eight-page document produced by Garcia's company Capricorn Systems, which is headquartered in Garcia's apartment.

The report offers illustrations about what the machine could look like.

The idea remains on paper and in Garcia’s mind, and to make his dream into a reality, Garcia needs recognition and, more importantly, money.

"I don't have the resources to put something like this together," Garcia said.

The technology to piece together the C15/60 exists, according to Garcia. Premier Tech, an international

Garcia's laboratory is a one-bedroom apartment in a senior living building on East Dunne Avenue.

When he's not tinkering with ideas or waiting

for work as a union construction worker, Garcia uses himself as a guinea pig to test his concoction of meat, shredded wheat and juice, which he boasts can stop the human aging process.

He has five years of notepads tracking his daily body weight index, and while it is hard to prove correlation, Garcia claims to have beaten

pancreatic cancer twice.

The meat/juice tonic also happens to be Garcia’s only meal of the day.

Born in Roswell, New Mexico, Garcia moved to the Bay Area when he was 5, as his father found work as a painter.

Garcia studied computer engineering and biology at Gavilan College, then found a printing job at Stanford University,

where he was allowed to take classes.

After his time at Stanford University, Garcia worked in retail sales, management and in the printing industry for more than two decades.

In his spare time, Garcia took flying lessons in between working on his health and building his one-person operation at Capricorn Systems.

With new wildfires threatening our local communities, PG&E is partnering with our customers in high fire-threat areas to accelerate and expand our vegetation management work. We will be examining and addressing critical vegetation across 7,100 miles of power lines.

Scott Jackson could only shake his head in disappointment afterward. The Sobrato High girls water polo coach was helpless as the Bulldogs let a big lead slip away en route to a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Aragon of San Mateo in a Central Coast Section Division II playoff opener last Saturday at Palo Alto High.

“Just a very tough loss,” Jackson said. “The girls played their heats out and we didn’t catch any breaks, but that is how water polo goes sometimes. Just a disappointing way to end the

season. The girls are really sad because they were hoping to play at least one more game.”

For a while, it looked as if that was a foregone conclusion.

The No. 2 seed Bulldogs (12-9) took what looked to be a commanding 6-2 lead when Helena Batey scored on a 6-on-5 advantage with 4 minutes, 46 seconds left until halftime. However, No. 7 seed Aragon (14-11) closed the second period by scoring four of the next five goals, cutting the deficit to one and preventing Sobrato from pulling away.

Sobrato answered and built a 9-6 advantage with 57 seconds left in the third. However, what happened next proved to be the theme of the match.

Every time Sobrato had a chance to pull away, Aragon’s Maria Sell delivered a backbreaking goal, with the majority of them coming from well beyond five

meters. Sell, who finished with a match-high seven goals, entered the contest having scored over 100 goals. The Aragon standout is known for scoring from long distance, and that’s exactly what she did, utilizing a Midas touch in getting the ball into the Sobrato cage.

“We knew they had one person No. 12 who was a really good player, and we were really trying not to let her take any shots,” Jackson said. “But she’s shooting from everywhere, and it’s hard to stop that.”

Indeed, one of Sell’s goals came from the mid-pool line, water polo’s equivalent of Steph Curry draining a shot from half court. Batey led Sobrato with four goals, but she picked up her third exclusion with 2:57 remaining, disqualifying her from the match. Sobrato led 9-8 at the time only to see

Aragon tie things at 9-9 with 55 seconds to go before scoring the game-winning goal with 26 seconds remaining.

The Bulldogs had a couple of possessions in the last minute, but their offense stalled.

Jackson called a timeout with around 20 seconds left and the team trailing 10-9. However, the team couldn’t get a shot off, sealing its fate. Aziza Calvert had three goals and Molly Foster two for Sobrato, which played airtight defense for most of the third period. The majority of Aragon’s 10 goals came beyond five meters.

At times, Sobrato showed the form of a team that finished second to powerhouse Leland in the Blossom Valley League’s Mount Hamilton Division. Batey rose out of the water to get shots off over multiple defenders, Foster got out for a breakaway goal

and Calvert’s game sense and swimming skills put her and her teammates in position to score.

Despite the loss, Sobrato should be back in playoff contention next season. Even though the Bulldogs graduate a couple of key senior starters, they’ll return a strong core nucleus including Calvert, Foster, Annie Ly, Sara Magana, and Kylie Downing.

While the team’s season-ending loss was painful, the Bulldogs can grow stronger from the experience.

“The girls will realize it was a successful season once the pain goes down,” Jackson said. “We lost a lot of seniors from last year’s team and had to build a new team. I’m really proud of how the girls played together.

They’ve come a long way and even though we finished on a down note, there is a lot to be proud of.”

Acorns face familiar foe in playoffs

The Live Oak High football team finished in a threeway tie for second place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division with a 5-2 record. Last week, the Acorns whipped nemesis Oak Grove 34-14 to close the regular-season. Live Oak, the No. 3 seed in the Central Coast Section Open Division III playoffs, play No. 6 Sacred Heart Cathedral, the same team that it beat last year in the opening round of the postseason.

Against Oak Grove, Acorns quarterback Jonathan Singleton completed 9-of-14 passes for 214 yards while running for 74 yards on 14 carries. Singleton accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing), and connected with Mosiah Saulala and Caleb Ojeda for some big plays through the air. Saulala had two receptions for 90 yards and Ojeda had four catches for 97 yards. Connor Dietz, Jered Brindle and Ashton Green combined for 32 tackles.

“All the girls are still practicing, and that is great to see,” Reed said. “It’s nice to win league this year because I got third last year.”

Reed took control of the race with about a mile to go on the final hill of the course. It’s no coincidence Reed and Harris are both strong on the hills, as cross country success demands a strong runner who not only can scale the hills but accelerate on the downhill portion of them as well. Harris felt strong all the way to the end, and finished with a negative split (running faster in the first half of a race than the last half ).

“I was really excited for the finish and time,” she said. “But I felt like I could’ve pushed a little more, but I didn’t want to take out that first mile too fast. I felt I had a pretty good kick at the end, and passed a couple of people with 800 and 400 meters to go.”

Slowly but surely, Harris seems to have regained the form of her freshman and sophomore years, when she posted her fastest times. The senior

Reed, a Live Oak High sophomore, won the individual league title with a time of 18 minutes, 55.1 seconds, with Harris— a Sobrato High senior— coming in second in 19:02 over the famed 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course. Even though neither runner set a personal-record (PR) at the course, they’re both feeling strong entering the biggest race of the season.

Plenty of storylines are at play, with Sobrato and Live Oak aiming to qualify to the CIF State Championships as a team. if that doesn’t happen, Reed, Harris and Sobrato sophomore Jessica Faulk should be in the running for individual state berths. The sophomore standout Reed led a solid Acorns’ contingent that included freshman Abby Paulson, who was the team’s No. 2 scoring runner, followed by junior Gillian McCaw, senior Jenna Watson, and junior Aly Conlan.

Harris also had strong team support,

with sophomore Jessica Faulk, senior Allie Wells, junior Alyssa Bruno and senior Isabella Fuegmann accounting for the team’s top five scoring runners.

Reed feels a PR at Crystal Springs is a definite possibility. Reed, who finished in third place in the CCS Championships last year, won’t be alone this time around since Live Oak qualified as a team after barely missing out on a spot last year.

battled injuries last season, but she’s learned a lot over the years and has matured to the point where she has a great outlook even in adverse circumstances.

“Even if I got a little slower from my freshman season, I still have to be proud that I stuck through it and always showed up and gave my best,” she said.

In running a 19:02 in the league finals at Crystal Springs, Harris showed she might have at least one more PR in her before her high school career ends.

Harris went 18:54 in the BVAL Finals as a sophomore and two weeks later went 18:59.5 in the CCS Championships. Harris’ 19:02 could be a harbinger

for an excellent CCS result.

“I’m very confident on the hilly courses because I’m able to keep my pace and not lose too much time on the hills,” she said.

For the last two years, Sobrato has finished just a couple of spots away from advancing to the state meet. Harris would love nothing more than

for the Bulldogs to get the job done in her final go-around.

“We hope we can keep the momentum and confidence for CCS because we really want to qualify as a team,” Harris said.

“I think if we all come together and run the way we’re capable of, it is a definite possibility.”

OBITUARIES ROBERT “BOB” LEHOCKY

LORI ROSS JUNE 28, 1954-OCTOBER 13, 2018

L

November, 10, 1940 - October, 26, 2018

ori Ross, a woman cherished by family, friends, colleagues, students, and parents, lost her short and aggressive battle with breast cancer on Saturday, October 13, 2018.

Lori, a native of New York, moved to Hillsborough, CA when she was in 9th grade with her parents, Bruce and Roberta and her three siblings. She attended Burlingame High School, before she pursued her dream of being a teacher, receiving her BA and Masters in Early Childhood Development at Fresno State University. During her Summers, she worked at Girl Scout Camp as Camp Director, finetuning leadership skills and making lifelong friends, including her partner of 38 years Judy (aka: Dee-d) Pick. As an adult, Lori settled in San Jose, CA where she built her family and taught at Los Paseos Elementary School. Lori’s life is best defined by her three passions: motherhood, her role as a teacher, and basketball.

Lori’s greatest joy was being a mother, and recently, a grandmother. Giving birth to daughter, Jacie, co-parenting with Judy, and opening their doors and hearts to foster-daughter, Lyndsey, created many happy family memories and adventures. Their family increased to include twin grandchildren, Ava and Anthony (2), who live with their parents, Lyndsey and AJ in Arizona For 38 years Lori lived her dream as an outstanding and beloved lead teacher. Morgan Hill Unified School District named her “Teacher of the Year” in 2015, the year she retired. She was admired for her ability to diffuse difficult situations with kind directness and a sense of humor. Her genuine care for all students was evident and impacted countless lives.

Anyone who knew petite Lori has to chuckle over her obsession with basketball. Whether coaching third through sixth graders on the school grounds or following her favorite teams (Stanford Women’s and the WNBA) around the country, everyone knew that the month of March was “sacred time” devoted to her passion.

Lori’s retirement, though too short, was filled with adventures and activities with Judy, her daughters, her teacher colleagues, and her Girl Scout friends. On any day, Lori was playing games, bowling, going to movies, attending book group, traveling, dining, cruising with Judy and friends, cuddling grandbabies, and just making the most of every day. In every gathering, Lori was the heart, the laughter, the storyteller, the organizer, and the magnet for great love and friendship. Lori’s impact on the lives of all she knew was significant, and she will be sorely missed!

Lori is survived by her spouse, Judy Pick; daughters, Jacie Ross and Lyndsey Buchanan (and AJ); grandchildren Ava and Anthony Buchanan; sister Cheryl Ross (and Jaime); and brothers Brett Ross (and Debbie) and Joby Ross (and Annette).

A Memorial Celebration of Life has been scheduled for Friday, November 9 at 7:30PM in the multi-purpose room at Los Paseos Elementary School, 121 Avenida Grande, San Jose 95139. We welcome anyone who knew Lori to attend.

CAROL ANN SHADE November, 12, 1939 - November, 01, 2018

arol Ann Shade, 78, of Corral de Tierra, CA and former long time resident of Salinas.

Passed away on Thursday morning, November 1, 2018 at her home of natural causes.

Carol was born on November 12, 1939 in San Bernardino, CA. She moved to Alisal in the early 1940’s and she graduated from Salinas High School in 1957. She worked for a short time at the Salinas Californian Newspaper.

Carol married in 1959, she and her husband Jim have lived in Alisal, North Salinas, Spreckels, Salinas and from 1984 to Jim’s passing in 2007 in San Martin CA. They lived in Maui for four years while retaining the San Martin residence. After Jim’s passing, Carol moved to Corral de Tierra to be near her children and grandchildren and has lived there ever since.

In the early 1960’s Carol was a stay at home Mom to her sons Corey and Randy. In 1964, Jim and Carol opened the 4 Seasons artificial flower shop. Carol worked on the plastic flower arrangements and did the bookkeeping. In 1966, Jim and Carol started A-1 Rents. They owned locations in Salinas, Monterey and two in San Jose from 1966 to 1997. She was instrumental on the bookkeeping side of the business. Jim always credited her as a big reason for their success.

In October of 1997 they sold the business to United Rentals and retired.

Carol attended of St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Morgan Hill, CA., and after moving to Corral de Tierra the Cypress Community Church. She was a member of the American Rental Association, the California Rental Association., And the Red Hat Society.

She loved attending the grandchildren’s sporting events. “Grandy” was Zak, Kellen and Connor’s biggest fan both in sports and scholastically.

She lovingly spoiled her miniature schnauzer Sparky, who misses her greatly.

She loved to travel with her friends and has been all over the world.

She is survived by her, Sons, Corey Peter (Karen Ann) Shade and Randall Lee (Shannon Marie) Shade both of Salinas, CA. grandchildren, Zachary James Shade, Kellen Ann Shade, Connor James Peter Shade, of Salinas, CA. sister, Nancy (Garlin)Ivy of Kalispell, MT., and her nieces Lisa(Bruce) Rianda and Lee Anna (Steve) Matelli, numerous grand nieces and nephews. And Sparky A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., at the Cypress Community Church, 681 Monterey Salinas Hwy Salinas, CA 93908.

obert “Bob” Lehocky passed away suddenly on October 26, 2018 in Morgan Hill, California, his home of nearly 40 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 53 years, Linda, three children, Missy Norquist (Gary), Rob Lehocky (Sarah) and Joel Lehocky (Christine) and his seven grandchildren, Owen and Luke Norquist; Taylor, Payton and Jake Lehocky; and Anabelle and Eli Lehocky. He is also survived by his sister Mary Kellogg, brother-inlaw Richard Kellogg, and sister-in-law Marilyn Erdman. A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 16 at 1pm at St. Catherine’s Church in Morgan Hill. A reception will follow at the Morgan Hill Cultural and Community Center. All who knew and appreciated Bob’s unique presence are invited to come and share their “Bob stories.”

eorge William Hessling Sr, 80, passed away on Friday, October 26th, 2018. He was born November 27th, 1937 to George and Marie (Saude) Hessling in Lemoore, Kings County, California. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Morgan Hill, CA. He grew up in Morgan Hill and was raised on a small ranch on Main Avenue which is now Valley Pines Retirement Home. In March of 2018, he moved back to his family home (Valley Pines) and spent the rest of his days living there. George retired from the Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Office as a Deputy where he worked for 30 years. During his tenure there he was well known to all the farmers and ranchers in South County. His son George Jr. has continued his father’s legacy and is also part of the Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff. George enjoyed his 1939 Hot Rod and was a member of two car clubs. He loved to BBQ, cook and entertain family and guests.

He was a very loving and kind person who had many close friends. Survivors include; James Hessling of Morgan Hill, Loren (Hessling) Burks of Morgan Hill, William Hessling of Tracy, and George Hessling Jr. of Gilroy; 6 Grandchildren Robert, Renee, Nichole, Winston, Nathan, and Philip; 8 great-grandchildren; his sister Rosemarie Britton of Green Valley, AZ. As well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and some very special friends. George was preceded in death by his beautiful and loving wife Cheryl Alvernaz with whom he will be joined within his final resting place. George was laid to rest at the Santa Clara Catholic Cemetery, Santa Clara, CA.

Raul Vega, her children, Freddy and Nicole Villarreal, and their respective spouses, Araceli Villarreal and Pete Steele. She is also survived by her grandchildren Selene, Breea, and, Kiana.

Eleanor was born in San Francisco and was raised in Hollister. She made Gilroy her home at age 18. She attended Gavilan College and graduated from the University of San Francisco.

Eleanor retired from Rebekah Children’s Services where she worked for over 20 years as the Chief Development Officer and Public Relations Director. Her passion was being an advocate for children and families in Gilroy.

Eleanor also had a deep passion for the Prevention and Education Program. Through her efforts RCS was able to raise millions of dollars for the expansion of RCS programs. Eleanor was instrumental in leveraging funding from an array of community businesses and leaders.

In addition, Eleanor was an active supporter and member of the Latino community in Gilroy. She was a founding member of the Gilroy Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Gilroy Hispanic Cultural Festival, and more recently the Latino Family Fund. In 2017 she received the Legacy Award from Community Agency for Resources, Advocacy, and Services (CARAS).

Eleanor was a founding member of the Exchange Club of Gilroy and the Coastal Habitat Education Environmental Restoration (CHEER). She was also a member of the South County Democratic Club, served as Commissioner for the Santa Clara County FIRST 5 program, served as chairwoman and active volunteer of the Gilroy Garlic Festival, and belonged to and participated in many other local organizations.

Eleanor received the distinction of Gilroy’s Woman of the Year in 1996 by the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce and the Outstanding Professional Fundraiser in 1997 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Silicon Valley. In 2017 Rebekah Children’s Services dedicated their library in her honor and proclaimed it as the “Eleanor Villarreal Library”.

Eleanor enjoyed exercising, walking her dogs, going dancing, going to antique shops and estate sales, and spending time with her family and friends. She will be truly missed, but her countless contributions to the Gilroy community will live on for many years to come.

A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor on Friday, November 9th, 2018 from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Odd-Fellow Rebekah’s Children’s Services in Gilroy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to Rebekah’s Children’s Services directed to the Legacy Fund or the Good Times Fund.
