MATT MAHAN finally confirmed what we all saw coming. The 36-year-old founder of civic engagement network Brigade Media reached out to Fly Tuesday to say that he sold his startup and is now officially campaigning for San Jose City Council.

“My motivation to run is really rooted in my personal experience with San Jose,” he tells Fly. “San Jose’s given me a lot. For me, it’s been a place of opportunity, and I would like to see it be a growing, vibrant city with upward mobility for everyone.”

Mahan traces his passion for the Capital of Silicon Valley back to his high school years, when his teacher mom and letter-carrier dad had him commute from Watsonville to Bellarmine Prep, which he attended on a work-study scholarship. “This was in the ’90s,” he says. “I took the Highway 17 Express to Diridon Station every day, which took about two hours. It was a long journey, but one of those inflection points in one’s life where I had the foresight, I guess, of thinking that this is going to be hard but it’s going to be worth it.”

FTER A DECADE of cutbacks, the Santa Clara County Superior Court this year finally expanded self-help services for the growing number of people showing up to fight evictions, gain custody of their kids or seek divorces without a lawyer.

Even after Santa Clara County chipped in $1.6 million on top of the $936,000 from the governor’s budget to take it from three to five days a week and hire more attorneys, people still get turned away.

While understaffing leads to long lines for the public in virtually every department, the local court seems well staffed with jurists. Correcting

the imbalance could free up millions of dollars a year—money that could fund customer-facing positions like the understaffed records desks or the first come, first serve self-help center.

Several court workers who spoke to Metro say they get the sense that the court just chooses not to.

“There’s always a give and take,” court spokesman Benjamin Rada concedes.

When it comes to the bench, higherups say it’s taken more than it needs.

A new report by State Auditor Elaine Howle shows that in 2016, the judiciary shelled out $7 million of its $27 million budget to assign temporary judges to five counties that already had the highest number of surplus judges. Though the audit elides mention of Santa Clara County, the court’s own data ranks it among the worst offenders.

“In fact,” her report states, “program staff consistently reported that they did not even question the courts’ requests but simply attempted to fill them as best they could.”

Though the audit elides mention of Santa Clara County, the court’s own data ranks it among the worst offenders. If that made it more efficient than courts with fewer temps, that would be one thing. Yet despite being flush with judges, it lags behind its peers in resolving criminal cases.

Every two years, the Judicial Council evaluates caseloads in each county to come up with an estimate for the required number of judges.

For the timeframe of Howle’s audit, the agency set that figure to 67 positions for Santa Clara County. By hiring commissioners and requesting temps through the Judicial Council, however, the local court had 89 jurists doing work that the statewide agency figured 22 fewer could handle.

The $854,000-plus the Judicial Council spent on staffing Santa Clara County with extra judges didn’t come directly out of the trial court’s budget.

Neither does the $176,000 a year per judge’s salary. But additional jurists rack up other indirect costs. Around each one orbits a host of staffers, including clerks and court reporters, that put the

the additional time and attention required to run some of Santa Clara County’s pioneering programs, such as the mental health, veteran and drug courts. “We manage cases here in a particular way,” she says. “We basically establish calendars and departments to handle cases in a way that we believe provides the most individualized attention that we could provide to the litigants that come before us.”

A judicial branch source who requests anonymity to avoid blowback for advocating to increase the workload for full-time judges says most other courts face similar challenges and run similar programs without going as far beyond the Judicial Council’s allotted positions.

“For Santa Clara Superior Court to simply disagree with the statewide study without suggesting any specific flaw in the analysis or methodology has no merit,” he says.

Thankfully, Herrick says, the court’s judicial allocation is now in relatively good standing. Before terming out last year, Gov. Jerry Brown made several judicial appointments, bringing the local court’s allotment of judges up to 77. With five commissioners—two of whom are funded by state grants and three whose $160,000 yearly salaries come from the local general fund—that brings the tally of judicial equivalents to 82.

“We ended up with a fair number of judges,” Herrick says.

Even absent temporary judges, Santa Clara County still has 10 more than the Judicial Council says it needs. That amounts to $10 million in annual expenditures that could otherwise pay for direct services to the public or to hire the 14 employees needed to meet the Judicial Council’s staffing allotment of 616 positions.

“That is certainly a possibility,” local court spokesman Benjamin Rada says. “Other courts have chosen to go that route.”

Add the courtroom costs for those five commissioners, and you’re looking at potentially $15 million a year.

Taking a cue from counterparts in San Francisco and San Mateo by eliminating commissioners altogether wouldn’t make things easier on the employees, per se, Rada argues.

“Staff spends a lot of time here regardless,” he says. “It would create displacement, but not necessarily solve the problem.”

Santa Clara County Court General Counsel Lisa Herrick, however, disputes the notion that the temp program drained staff resources. She also takes issue with the premise of the state auditor’s findings, saying court officials disagree with the way the Judicial Council decides how many judges a jurisdiction needs.

“Do we agree that we have a surplus of judges?” she posits. “No.” Further, Herrick says, Howle’s findings pointed to impropriety by the Judicial Council, not the trial courts. “We understand that the state auditors found that the Judicial Council managed the assigned judges program in a way that they don’t think was appropriate,” she says. “But when they’re saying the courts made too many requests, these weren’t the rules at the time. No one pushed back and said, ‘You’re overusing the program.’ And in the auditor’s report there’s even a concession: the Judicial Council says, ‘Yeah, we never asked anybody. We never checked.’”

The Judicial Council in 2018 did indeed enact new guidelines for the program that limits retired judges to 120 days of assigned work a year and a retroactive lifetime cap of 1,320 days.

Additionally, judges must wait three months after retiring to sign up for the program and the Judicial Council must weigh a court’s allocated staffing levels when considering a request for extra help. While some of the rules changed last year add clarity and new restrictions, case law—namely People v.

Engram in 2010 and People v. Swain in 1995—has long held that the purpose of the program is to ease “overburdened courts” or an “overtaxed system.”

Herrick says the state should come up with a better measure of what it means by “overburdened.” Changing that calculus, however, would require a legislative fix.

“For sure there’s a years-old judicial needs assessment that says, based on your filings, you need fewer judges than the number that you have,” Herrick says, “and that we do, in fact, disagree with. We have the number of judges we have, and they’re all working really hard. They’re trying to send cases out faster. We wish we had more time to spend with all the litigants.”

S PART OF the city of San Jose’s Creative License Ambassador program, Maestra Barbara Day Turner of the San Jose Chamber Orchestra is curating a concert of original 60-second songs about San Jose, written by community members, all to be performed at City Hall on June 21.

Anyone can write a song and submit it for consideration.

As part of the performances, in

addition to the one-minute songs, there will be audience participation and other community crowdsourced composition projects right there and then.

There might be some ringers, of course, which is why I’m hoping Turner resurrects the greatest song ever written about San Jose.

No, I’m not talking about the Dionne Warwick abomination, the nauseating tune that even she dislikes.

I am talking about a ‘70s jazz-rock masterpiece by the famous Japanese pop composer, Domei Suzuki (1920-

2015), titled, “Yes, I Know the Way to San Jose.”

Suzuki first came to San Jose in 1961. In Tokyo, he was known for producing his own hits or Japanese versions of songs by Brenda Lee and Vikki Carr. After numerous visits to the Bay Area, Suzuki fell in love with San Jose and wrote the song in 1974, with English lyrics by Tom and Cathy Clark, who were living in Tokyo. The 45 RPM single features a sweeping cover photo of ’70s-era San Jose with orchards in the foreground, looking down on the valley below. Inside the single, one finds the sheet music reduction for voice and piano, as well as the lyrics. The liner notes relay Suzuki’s story in his own words: “Leaving Japan, the first place I saw on the mainland was San Francisco,” he writes. “It was at night, and I shall never forget the beauty of the night scene from the plane that greeted me.

I was met at the airport by my uncle and cousins, who took me straight to San Jose. I was to stay for two

weeks with my uncle and his family, during which time we drove to San Francisco, Monterey, Pebble Beach, the mission at Carmel, and so on. The impression I received remains fresh in my mind. I became very fond of California. Before I knew it, I fell into the habit, like a migratory bird, of visiting San Jose at least once a year.”

After making several close friends in San Jose and spending much time here, Suzuki finally made good on his promise to write a tune about the city. The intro to “Yes, I Know the Way to San Jose” sounds like something straight from The Rockford Files, but then it breaks into a grooving minor-key jazz-rock arrangement replete with a horn section, electric guitar, bass, trap set and swanky English language vocals by the late Tokyo chanteuse Hatsumi Shibata. The late Japanese producer Norio Maeda arranged the orchestra and recorded the track in Tokyo.

In 1976, San Jose held several events celebrating the US Bicentennial, including a multi-day jazz fair with a residency by Quincy Jones, who conducted Suzuki’s tune, which was also chosen as the theme song for the San Jose City Bicentennial (1777-1977).

Suzuki loved San Jose so much that he donated 14,000 of the records to the city’s bicentennial commission.

History San Jose still has a few copies in its archives, but otherwise you’ll have to scour the antique shops on San Carlos Street or places like Needle to the Groove to even possibly track down a copy.

Upon any new listen, especially if you’re a native, it’s one of those, “why is this track not regularly performed” type of experiences. That a renowned Japanese jazz and easy listening giant could come here and reap enough rocking inspiration to write a song should inspire anyone else to write his or her own tune and submit it to maestra Turner’s project, plain and simple. She is a genius for having this idea.

Speaking of which, at presstime a dozen artists had already submitted a tune or committed to write something. Even better, San Jose’s own Jackie Gage will show up and perform her tune, “A Secret Place,” written and debuted last year at the San Jose Jazz Summerfest. It doesn’t get any more local than that.

hit me baby one more time As millennials hit middle age, they are pining for simpler times—and paying for a chance to relive the good old days BY MIKE HUGUENOR

HREE LEVELS INTO Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, the evil samurai Shredder makes his first appearance.

“My patience is wearing thin,” the caped super villain announces from within a sewer. “I’m banishing you to a timewarp from which you’ll never return.”

The next instant, the dreaded Shredder emits a pattern of concentric circles from his forehead, forming a net around the Turtles.

An aperture opens in the sky. Sucked in, our heroic reptiles are cast back through time, diverting them from their goal of defeating the evil brain Krang and returning the Statue of Liberty to its rightful place in New York Harbor.

Though it was released almost 20 years ago, Turtles in Time is a popular

title at Miniboss, San Jose’s recent edition of the national barcade craze.

Tucked between arcade cabinets of Tron (1982) and NARC (1988), the plastic buttons on Turtles in Time give off a near constant slapping sound as player after player drops quarters into the buttonmasher.

Miniboss is not alone in capitalizing on retro games. In 2016, when Nintendo reissued the Nintendo Entertainment System as the NES Classic, it sold out instantly.

Two years later, when they produced more copies, the humble device from 1983 outsold the XBox One, PS4 and Nintendo’s own Switch console.

Arcade bars, such as Miniboss and LVL Up in Campbell, draw patrons who gleefully replay the titles they first mastered as preteens—only now they do so with a locally brewed IPA or craft cocktail in hand.

Born between the early ’80s and mid-’90s, the youngest members

of the millennial cohort are just getting out of college, while the oldest are buying homes, getting married and starting families. They are fully grown adults, with growing salaries and increasing amounts of expendable income. And all around the country, businesses, bars and party promoters are cashing in on millennial nostalgia.

The first Saturday of June, It’s Relative PR, a Sacramento production company, is hosting its recurring 90’s Nite party at The Ritz. DJs will be spinning hits by the likes of Sugar Ray, C&C Music Factory and ’N Sync. On June 22, the same promoters return with the Emo Night Tour—where a live band will cover songs by the likes of My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and Fall Out Boy. The phenomenon stretches beyond bars and clubs. Recently, a French company called Mulaan opened a new

plant for producing cassette tapes to capitalize on the slew of mainstream pop artists, such as Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift, who have been putting out albums on the retro format. Sony has issued a new Walkman (and, for that matter, Motorola a new flip phone). Even the music video style of the cassingle era is alive and well.

Vampire Weekend’s recent “Harmony Hall” clip includes candlelit sets a la Pearl Jam and Nirvana, and fish-eye camera shots straight out of “Mo Money Mo Problems.”

And this year marks the return of Double Dare, a family competition show that was syndicated on Nickelodeon in 1988-89. Double Dare Live comes to the City National Civic in San Jose this October. The show’s

original host, Marc Summers, will head up the national tour.

The past is back. So, in the words of 4 Non Blondes’ 1993 hit, “What’s going on?”

EMO NIGHT For Marcus Leonardo, founder of It’s Relative PR, becoming an event promoter was a natural transition.

“The nice thing is this is music I grew up playing,” he says.

Now 32, Leonardo sang in the emo band Roses For Ophelia in the 2000s and filled in on vocals in screamo band Scary Kids Scaring Kids. By his count he’s played “three Warped Tours and two OzzFests.”

An LA native, Leonardo has been living in Sacramento for the past few years. There, he found common ground with new friends over a shared love of 2000s emo.

“Me and my friends would get together and listen to this music, either at our houses or at a party.

Eventually I thought, ‘Well, there’s

enough of us; we can probably get a bar to play this music.’”

Their first venue was a small craft cocktail bar. Without a dance floor or a DJ booth, it was a plug-and-play night for Leonardo.

“I just curated a playlist and played it,” he says. “I didn’t really announce it; it was just for me and my friends.

But word got out in Sacramento.

Within two weeks of people knowing I was doing this, it went from like 1214 people to 150.”

After outgrowing their first location, Leonardo relocated his emo nights to a dance club. They quickly outgrew that venue as well.

“I put the event up, and it was 1,000 people going to or interested at a bar that could fit 400 people,” he remembers. “Immediately. It was obvious that there was a need for this.”

PLAY IT AGAIN By the time the Emo Night Tour started, promoters and fans all over the country had already caught on, or were beginning to pick up on the phenomenon.

MILLENNIAL NOSTALGIA It began, as so many things do, in New York and Los Angeles. Emo Night Brooklyn came first—followed by Emo Nite LA, Long Island Emo Night, Emo Night Boston and many more.

In 2017, the New Yorker described the phenomenon in an article titled “The Rise of Emo Nostalgia.” Writer Jia Tolentino astutely describes the music’s appeal: “There was a streak of playfulness in emo, but it was the genre’s spectacular sentimental indulgence that really got people on board. It also insured (sic) that emo’s biggest fans fell within a certain age range.”

“A lot of the people who come to our events are looking for the stuff they listened to in middle school, high school, college,” Leonardo says. “It is definitely a nostalgia trip for them.”

In fairly cynical terms, The New Yorker described this phenomenon by saying that “music made to help teenagers flail their way to adulthood provides an opportunity for adults to succumb to the histrionics of teendom again.”

Make no mistake, there are plenty of histrionics in this brand of emo. For evidence, just look at any Dashboard Confessional lyric. But for Leonardo, it’s much more than that. All of this started out of a desire to share space with people who loved the same thing.

It’s that desire for connection, and common ground, that he sees behind Emo Night Tour’s success.

“Everything is social media; everything’s on your phone, your computer. A lot of people don’t do things together anymore. There’s a need to have a collective that comes together for something that they all love.”

RECLAIMED Nostalgia is nothing new. In 2017, the Monterey County Fairgrounds hosted the 50th anniversary of the Monterey Pop Festival—complete with contemporary artists and few of the performers who played at the 1967 festival where The Who smashed up their amplifiers and Jimi Hendrix set his stratocaster on fire.

This year, Michael Lang, producer and co-creator of Woodstock Music & Art Festival, hopes to mark that historic concert’s 50th anniversary at Watkins Glen International Speedway in New York.

However, the fact that Leonardo kicked off his very first Emo Night at a craft cocktail bar highlights the uniquely patchwork nature of this generation’s nostalgic impulses.

The resurgence of craft cocktails (so the story goes) started in Manhattan in the 1980s, and can be traced to the reopening of the 1930s-era bar the Rainbow Room. After renovations, the bar took an esoteric approach and made the 1862 book How to Mix Drinks its holy book. With the return of the classic cocktail, Manhattanites re-experienced something most living locals had never experienced in the first place.

Miniboss itself is one of San Jose’s numerous craft cocktail bars, along with Paper Plane, Labyrinth, Habadasher and countless others. At Miniboss, customers can pay $13-$18 for drinks with ingredients like Lustau East India Solera Sherry, smoked paprika and Dolin Dry Vermouth.

That in 2019 we are paying almost $20 a pop for something conceived in the 1860s and revived in the 1980s is interesting. Add to that the fact that today’s hip bars feature things like reclaimed wood from old barns and decaying craftsman homes, Alexander Girard-inspired wall patterns (1950s), LED-powered faux-Edison light

JUST THE HITS At its Emo Night Tour and 90’s Night events, the Sacramento-based It’s All Relative productions keeps patrons stoked on classic cuts from groups like My Chemical Romance and The Backstreet Boys. bulbs (1879), and bartenders who pair Don Draper hairdos (mid-’60s) with Rutherford B. Hayes beards (1877), and this generation’s style begins to look like a playthrough of Turtles in Time, with each discrete era a different circle emanating from Shredder’s mind.

Already by 1981, this very issue had been described by French philosopher Jean Baudrillard with his concept of the “hyperreal”—that is, the copy with no original.

“It is no longer a political economy of production that directs us, but an economic politics of reproduction, of recycling,” he wrote, as though from the future, in 1981. Already, in the 1980s Baudrillard saw hyperreality leading towards something he called “Absolute Advertising.”

“Today what we are experiencing is the absorption of all virtual modes of expression into that of advertising. All original cultural forms, all determined languages are absorbed in advertising because it has no depth, it is instantaneous and instantaneously forgotten.”

“Reminiscent of a bygone era, our all-American oak hardwood tables

are reclaimed from time-worn barn siding,” reads the copy on the website of Viridian Wood, a restaurant supply company.

BEYOND POP Recently, news outlets began questioning the appearance of nostalgia events like 90’s Nite.

In 2012, Slate used the subject as a springboard to ask “Does the nostalgia cycle run on a 40-year cycle, a 20-year cycle, a 12- to 15-year cycle?”

In the end, they concluded that “some cultural phenomenon can’t be explained away by simple rules.”

One constant across all these recent articles on nostalgia is the concept of nostalgia itself.

Somehow nostalgia never warrants explanation. Rarely does anyone ask what it is, asking instead how it will appear, and when. But the “why” is perhaps most interesting.

The idea that nostalgia is naturally occurring in every generation seems supported by psychoanalysis. In 1920, while studying recurring dreams in patients with trauma, Sigmund Freud

proposed that life is always driven to return to an earlier state.

“The manifestations of a compulsion to repeat,” he wrote in his essay, Beyond the Pleasure Principle, “which we have described as occurring in the early activities of infantile mental life…exhibit to a high degree an instinctual character.”

In this “compulsion to repeat,” Freud saw something massive: an “urge inherent in organic life to restore an earlier state of things, which the living entity has been obliged to abandon under the pressure of external disturbing forces.” This instinct, he went on to suggest, is our earliest one, preceding impulses for pleasure, sex and companionship. Put simply, it is “the instinct to return to the inanimate state.” Freud dubbed this instinct “The Death Drive,” proposing it as one of the two competing forces at work in every person.

Despite this idea that people are always driven to return to an earlier time, nostalgia as a word and a concept is a very recent phenomenon and one with a very particular history.

First proposed in 1688 by Johannes

Hofer, the term “nostalgia” is a mix of the Greek words nostos, meaning “homecoming,” and algos, which means “pain” or “longing.” Put simply, a “longing to return home.”

At the time he coined this now familiar term, Hofer was a 19-yearold French medical student living near the Swiss border.

A “longing to return home” sounds a lot like the nostalgia of “Nites” like 90’s Nite and Emo Night, but Hofer’s nostalgia wasn’t just a desire to listen to music from your teens. For him, nostalgia was a full blown disease. One that, untreated, could even be deadly.

The subject of a new book by Columbia University professor Thomas Dodman, What Nostalgia Was, exposes the odd, often contradictory history of nostalgia, beginning with its initial proposal as a deadly malady.

“In an advanced case, blood would begin to thicken and clot, hindering circulation and affecting the heart,” Dodson writes, citing Hofer’s original medical text, Dissertatio medica de nostalgia, oder Heimwehe. “If nostalgia was allowed to fester untreated, the ‘consumption of the spirits’ and inexorable weakening of the body would hasten death by exhaustion.”

Today, “death by nostalgia” seems laughable, but without it we likely wouldn’t know the word at all. It was only after making the rounds as a curiosity that nostalgia entered the public consciousness. Among 18thcentury elites, Hofer’s medical text became a hit, a regular point of discussion in literary salons where people gathered to discuss recent ideas. There, nostalgia emerged into “a broader audience of Enlightenment figures intrigued by astonishing stories of ‘death by nostalgia,’” Dodson writes.

Along the way, it evolved into the more benign, romantic notion we have of it today.

MY GENERATION Around 2010, College of Saint Rose professor Karen McGrath began to notice a change in her classrooms.

“It was the way in which we had to engage the students. We couldn’t rely so much on strict lectures anymore,” she says. “It had to be much more interactive.”

Sensing a generational shift, McGrath began looking into what people had begun to call “millennials.”

Right away she saw fingers pointed, grievances aired. Millennials were killing industries, killing social niceties—even killing the family.

“The assumptions people were making about the millennial generation, we kind of disagreed with them, because they didn’t describe the kind of student we had in our classrooms,” McGrath says.

Setting out to correct the narrative, McGrath and her fellow professor Regina Luttrell decided to make millennials the subject of their own research. In 2016, they published The Millennial Mindset: Unraveling Fact From Fiction. In millennials, McGrath and Luttrell found a generation capable of great personal engagement, one much more willing to share their own experiences than previous ones had been, all while having hundreds of new distractions competing for their attention.

“With Gen X, for example, we didn’t have the internet growing up.

We didn’t have social media at their age. I think that makes a difference.

They’re growing up so much faster because they’re exposed to so much more earlier on in life.”

While researchers usually try to pin down generations to year of birth (Baby Boomers 1946-1964, Gen X-ers 1965-1980), McGrath and Luttrell focused more on specific events.

“What we discovered in our research is that there were always these certain historical events that happened during someone’s childhood that really impact how they see the world, and what they want from the world. We think that 9/11 had a big impact on millennials, because that event was really when people realized they needed to be

medical work is the fact that nostalgia was first seen as a Swiss disease, one primarily affecting mercenaries, paid soldiers from Switzerland fighting in the many armies of a war-torn Europe. Though causes of nostalgia were attributed to a variety of sources (a sudden change in climate, an imbalance in the body’s “humors,” the “symptom of a disordered imagination”), there was one constant in the lives of all its earliest sufferers: war.

“Nostalgia,” Dodson writes, “came into being upon the rapidly expanding and ever-more-gruesome battlefields of 18th-century Europe.”

Highlighting 9/11 brings up a crucial point: The millennial generation is the first in modern American history to only know their country at war. Since 9/11, America has spent more than $6 trillion on war, engaging in conflicts in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya and Afghanistan—the latter of which is now seeing its second generation of soldiers. War, for the American millennial, is in the background at all times, fought by family members and friends, discussed on TV, embedded in online news clips, and increasingly figuring in fiction (Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel Avengers: Endgame, to name just a few). It is no coincidence that Thursday, one of the biggest emo bands of the 2000s (and one of the heaviest hitters at Emo Night) titled their 2003 album War All the Time. In an interview given after the record’s release, singer Geoff Rickly said, “On the news every day there would be all these things about the war going on, and that terrified me.”

For millennials, war spills into every part of our lives, whether in the form of cyber wars, municipal police departments outfitted with military grade weaponry and heavy equipment,

war advocates like John Bolton enjoying positions in a second White House administration or weapons of war used in mass shootings.

This last item is especially difficult to overlook. While attending the first 90’s Nite at the Ritz, a woman near me screamed. Not a whoop. Not a shout.

A full blown scream. As it turns out, she was just excited because she had heard the opening notes of “I Want It That Way,” but in a post-Columbine, post-Las Vegas, post-Pulse, post-Parkland world, I am increasingly aware of my surroundings in public. For a moment, that scream put me on edge.

In 2018, Business Insider found that Americans are now more likely to die in a mass shooting than from most traditional “fears.”

Shark attacks, dog attacks, lightning strikes, tornadoes, cataclysmic storms, poisonous venom, accidents on public transportation and attacks by foreignborn terrorists are all less likely causes of death than a mass shooting.

Surrounded by so much violence, era-themed events like Emo Night are an outlet for millennials—a way to cope. And advertisers are acutely aware.

One article in Forbes says it all.

“Aligning marketing strategies with emotion has already proven to be successful, but tapping into fond memories can be an invaluable tactic,

especially for engaging millennials.

Share a compelling blast from the past with a millennial and you’re likely to reach them on an emotional level— the holy grail of brand marketing.”

THE BLACK PARADE A little before midnight at 90’s Nite, the Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It” erupts from the speakers. Today, under a gutted Affordable Care Act, it is hard not to hear the song in the context of a GoFundMe drive to cover a stranger’s medical bills.

“I would think that nostalgia would be very important to millennials,” McGrath says near the end of our conversation. “They’re really forced to grow up more quickly than before, so why not look back on some of the things that made us happy? Music in general can really help people connect to an important time in their lives. That nostalgic feeling gives us a moment to break away from the adult world a little bit and remember our youth.”

For Leonardo and the Emo Night Tour, breaking away from the adult world is exactly what they offer. But it’s not about avoiding responsibility; it’s about coming together.

“Almost every one of our events that we do, we have like a ‘Kum Ba Yah’ moment where we stop the music and we pull everybody in real close. We make sure that everybody is together—whether we have 300 or 1,000 people in the audience— and we all sing My Chemical Romance’s ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ together. I mean full on with sing-along and balloon drop and everything you can think of. That is kind of the pinnacle of our event.”

My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way stated in 2005 that seeing 9/11 caused him to start the band. “Something just clicked in my head that morning,” he told SPIN magazine. In the music video for “Welcome to the Black Parade,” a woman wearing a gas mask is known only as “Mother War.” In its earliest hours, nostalgia was born out of a continent at war. For a generation where war is always in the background (and War All the Time is often on the stereo), it should be no surprise that

Back at 90’s Nite, a man on stage mimes playing the bass to Green Day’s “Longview.” A slow-burner, the song builds for almost three minutes before it reaches its climax—“When masturbation’s lost its fun, you’re fucking lonely.” Many in the crowd sing along, hopping up and down during the chorus that follows.

To the New Yorker, this might seem like the height of regressive, responsibility-denying teensploitation. But here’s the rub: Millennials as a generation are increasingly precarious, disconnected, marginally employed and overworked in a world constantly at war. And thanks to the burgeoning gig economy and the rise of telecommuting, many work without even the comfort of living, breathing coworkers. To one day be as free as Billie Joe Armstrong was in the ’90s is a millennial’s dream.

So when 90’s Nite and the Emo Night Tour return to San Jose this June, don’t be surprised if you see hundreds of despondent, disconnected, “sad as fuck” millennials flocking to The Ritz.

We may be going down. But—like Turtles cast back through time on an impossible quest to return to our own era—sugar, we’re going down swinging.

across N. Wolfe Road from the Apple campus—JSJ will serve all the Korean street food staples to go along with their stick dogs. Hits include oden (fish cakes); ddukbokki (spicy rice cakes); hotteok (sweet pancakes); and bungeo-ppang, a fish-shaped pastry filled with either a red bean paste, cheese, Oreos or Nutella. There will be more offerings to come, like kimchi fried rice and meat skewers, but those are still a few weeks out. JSJ wrapped their soft opening last week and are ready for business, so bring your curiosity and your appetite.

Hawaiian food is a rare commodity in the South Bay food

world, but now that just got a little bit easier with the recent opening of J & J HAWAIIAN BBQ on Stevens Creek Blvd in Cupertino. All the usual Hawaiian favorites are here, like chicken katsu, grilled short ribs and shrimp served up in so many ways that even Bubba would approve.

There’s even a loco moco for those who like breakfast for lunch.

Early reviews show massive portions for very little money, so let’s hope that continues.

After the recent closing of Harry’s Hof brau—due to the impending construction at the old Garden City center at Saratoga and Kiely—the owners of STONE STEW saw the writing on the wall and have quietly opened a second location downtown. The new restaurant formerly housed Mariscos San Juan #3—infamously for spawning a 2015 shigella outbreak. The new Stone Stew is almost as beautiful as the original, which mimics dining out at a Middle Eastern bizarre.

The food is pretty generic Iranian cuisine (kebabs, falafel, etc.). The real draw are their namesake stews,

which require diner participation to complete, are earthy, hearty and bubbling over with flavor.

San Francisco’s SUPER DUPER BURGER continues its expansion with the opening of a third South Bay location—this time on San Jose’s West Side on Prospect Road. Try their housemade pickle spears, which are placed out in the open so diners can load up on delicious dill.

After nearly 40 years in the community, Sunnyvale’s BLACK ANGUS closed its doors. Their public relations company reports that the restaurant’s lease was up and “they felt it was time to move on from that location.” The Los Altos-launched steakhouse chain has been operating since 1964, and is known for their reasonably priced dry-aged steaks. The two remaining South Bay locations—in South San Jose on Blossom Hill and at McCarthy Ranch in Milpitas remain open for now.

I tried to swing-by NAAN & CURRY on Saratoga Ave for lunch the other day, and was greeted by a faded sign saying the restaurant would be closed for an “uncertain period.” There was also a phone number attached but texts and phone calls went unreturned, and their corporate email spit back that infernal “Mailer-Daemon” message.

It would be a shame if they are truly closed. They served some terrific Indian food and had a philanthropic streak. Earlier this year, they gave away free food to furloughed federal employees.

Two downtown coffee shops, SOCIAL POLICY (aka SoPo) and THE PROPER CUP, closed down. SoPo was more than just a coffee shop. They served brunch, lunch and baked many of the pastries served at Bellano and B2. SoPo also served as a gallery for local artists and offered a rotating selection of craft beers. Their toasted Acme bread avocado toast will be sorely missed.

A source familiar with the broader Bellano Coffee mini-chain—which once comprised Bellano Coffee in Santa Clara, as well as SoPo and B2 Coffee at San Pedro Square Market—says that B2 will also be closing this month. However, there will still be a java shop in the same location. Voyager Coffee, which took over Bellano’s location on Stevens Creek Boulevard will also take the reins of B2’s space at the market.

With the Vietnam War at its height and serious civil unrest sweeping the country, one of the 20th century’s most respected composers sought to produce a work that would both challenge and unify a deeply divided America. After his decadespanning tenure leading the New York Philharmonic concluded in 1969, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis asked Leonard Bernstein to compose a work to commemorate the inauguration of the Kennedy Center in 1971. The son of Russian-Jewish parents took inspiration from the Roman Catholic Mass, pulling elements from a centuries-old tradition and fusing them with decidedly modern music and lyrics. (NV)

Stand-up comedy may be an American invention, but just as Bollywood has put its own spin on the multiplex blockbuster, the subcontinent has also learned to coax laughs out of a captive audience. Funnyman Vir Das launched his career in India and is now working at crossing over in America. He’s already appeared on Conan numerous times, demonstrating an easy rapport with the late night host. Das now has two hourlong Netflix specials: Abroad Understanding and Losing It. His next goal? Joining The Avengers.

TEVEN FREE’S THIRDstory studio at San Jose’s Art Ark apartments is a bit of a zoo. Dayglow paintings of snarling tigers, pissed off zebras and his grimacing giraffes hang on the walls, lean up against the backrest of a bench and are spread out across the floor.

This is where Free—better known by his graffiti name, Girafa—has been spending most of his free time lately. Sometimes he will hole up in here for up to 10 hours working on his latest body of work,

which he plans to show in his first solo show opening at The Arsenal in Japantown this Friday. The exhibition, “Going Extinct,” finds the former late-night box truck bomber ruminating on the state of the environment.

As he explains his increasing interest in animal rights and nature conservation, the human skulls in his latest pieces become clearer. One also notices the new line work he has developed over the past several years. He is no longer deploying a crisp band of black as he once did.

Rather, the outlines of his figures are squiggly and quivering. Judging from the expressions on the cartoon

animals’ faces, they are likely shaking with rage or fear.

And that’s when the human skulls come into focus. The animals are seeking revenge he says—against poachers, polluters and anyone else who would seek to take their lives or destroy their habitat.

“I think I’ve found my voice,” he says.

It wasn’t easy to find. Girafa made a name for himself with his prolific and illicit career as a graffiti artist. Much of his early work remains in place all over the Bay Area—from San Jose up to San Francisco, over to Oakland and back down. One can see his bright yellow and black giraffe on the walls of industrial buildings, plastered across fences facing railroad tracks, on the backs of big rig trailers and on the cement banks of flood control channels. He estimates he put up more than 1,000 pieces in his heyday.

Then he got caught, spent some time in jail and was slapped with a whopping fine—about $60,000.

It took him a while to get back on his feet and figure out how to do

his art on the up-and-up, but he had one thing going for him: brand recognition. Free did commissioned pieces for fans, produced stickers and made keychains of his giraffe character. He maintained a strong presence on Instagram and continued to cultivate a following.

But one day he decided he needed to start from scratch. He deleted all his social media accounts and began searching for something new.

“I just felt like I had hit that plateau,” Free says. “Like, I don’t know what to do from here.”

A quote from an art podcast hangs on his wall: “Impress yourself before you impress others,” it reads. He took the advice to heart. “I just wanted to go dark and be with myself—playing, experimenting and seeing what happens, not feeling like I need to show it to an audience.”

Free is ready and eager to show his work again. He says he will have about 20 individual pieces at his Arsenal show, which will run May 10Jun. 1. The largest piece in the exhibit is very impressive. It features three angry animals—a lion, a zebra and a giraffe—glaring out at the viewer, as different layers of giraffe spots swirl about the canvas in layers. Take a step back and you can see that the blue giraffe spots actually take the shape of human skulls.

Free says he is dismayed that animals have no control over what humans are doing to the planet. “I feel like humanity is doomed,” he says, explaining the painting and his general aesthetic thrust. “What if animals took control and made humans extinct, so they could live on this planet in peace?”

In addition to the paintings, Free will also be selling stickers and two T-shirts. One of the shirts features three giraffe heads with mouths that resemble the letters 408—the South Bay’s area code. The other is two giraffes, their long necks twisting to form the San Jose Giants logo.

ALL OVER SILICON Valley, people are making things. Some hunch over workbenches and keyboards, affixing chips to circuit boards and hacking away at their latest batch of code. Others are hard at work on more expressive products—bending precious metals, setting stones, shaping wet clay and mixing paints as they eye the blank canvas before them. This region has always been a magnet for creatives, both in the world of technology and the fine arts.

Now in its 33rd year, Silicon Valley Open Studios is once again celebrating these makers by swinging the doors open to the spaces where they practice their craft. During the first three weekends in May, art lovers are invited to visit participating artists in their Silicon Valley homes and studios. Some artists will exhibit on their Open Studios own, while others will share a space; numerous studios are located within the same complex, making for easy Sat-Sun, May 4-19 movement between featured works.

Valleywide The second weekend of the festival runs May 11-12 and svos.org it all concludes the weekend of May 18-19. This coming weekend is focused primarily on artists working in Santa Clara County—in the cities of East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Stanford, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara.

San Jose painter Gary Coleman conjures surreal landscapes using a technicolor palate. Rolling hills, winding rivers and subdivided farm tracts are rendered in rusty red, arctic blue and mediterranean stucco.

Many jewelers will also be showing their wares during SVOS. Gabriele Cressman juxtaposes gentle curves and sharp angles in her cool, metallic pendants. Each piece serves as a window to another world: warm-sea portholes, smooth dew-drop negatives, circles that recall celestial bodies in orbit.

Azita Gandjei fixes instants in time with her heavily affected and ethereal photography. Playing with saturation and exposure, she summons mystical shapes and shadows, freezing them in a gauzy haze. Human and jellyfish inhabit the same frame and figures glow in what could be heavenly or infernal light.

Sculptors are also well represented at this year’s SVOS. Jane Peterman shapes clay from a feminist’s vantage. Much of her work is named after women artists who have worked to resculpt the definition of equality. Spheres and elliptical designs unite both smooth and rough grains, cool mudslides of earth tone ceramic. Her teapots have titles like “More Women in Charge” and “No.” One even features the full text of the long-proposed but as yet unratified Equal Rights Amendment. —Erika Rasmussen

Rio Bravo Filmmakers brave rough terrain, observe the wild side of the US-Mexico border

T

HE LUNATIC PROPOSAL to wall off America’s southern border from sea to sea is a waste of both time and treasure. The implications of this partisan folly look even worse after watching Ben Masters’ The River and the Wall.

The film documents a 1,900-mile journey from the shoulder of Texas to its toe at the Gulf of Mexico. Five travelers follow the Rio Grande, America’s fourth largest river. It’s just one front for the proposed “big, beautiful wall.”

According to this gloriously photographed study, only 3 percent of

Texas is publicly owned. Most of that is in Texas’s Outback, the Big Bend region.

It is titanic country, 800,000 acres of open land. It’s remote, often tractless, a place to stir the soul of anyone who loves a Western movie. The area is so rugged that it has to be seen just so that the wall can be laughed off properly: vertical cliffs facing each other hundreds of feet above the river, mesas, box canyons and bluffs.

Says Masters: it’s “like the Grand Canyon without the crowds.”

The five-person adventure is carried out by mountain bike, on mustang back and in canoes. The trip includes a surprise snowfall that turns the road to mud, and a passage downstream through the rapids. Masters travels with ecologist Jay Kleberg, river guide

Austin Alvarado, photographer Filipe DeAndrade and a Coachella-beanie wearing, Cornell-trained ornithologist named Heather Mackey. She’s there to observe the subtropical bird and butterfly haven at Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park. See it now, if you can; this habitat may well soon be scraped by bulldozers and divided by the wall to be.

Part of the incalculable price of the wall is the closure of wildlife corridors over the border, even after the creatures there had started to come back from extirpation—bears, bighorn sheep and pronghorns, among others. A 2006 law lets the government ignore environmental issues when seizing land for border security. Some potential victims in the deep south of Texas are farmers who may lose access to the Rio Grande water, as well as rich fields, arable year-round. Farmland might be ceded to Mexico just because it’s easier to build a wall on a levee than on a riverbank.

The travelers do face potential danger, in the south near Brownsville. Boating by night, as they were advised not to do, they encounter a party of illegal crossers.

THE CROSSING Who needs a wall, when you’ve got sudden snowstorms, massive bluffs, turbulent rivers and a seemingly endless expanse of inhospitable scrubland?

In America, we have an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, most of them here on overstayed visas.

Over the decades, the matter has been a source for sidestepping bipartisan twaddle: seen here, the exact wording of Presidents Trump, Obama, Clinton and George W. Bush modulates slightly.

However, in the end they all seem to reach the same conclusion: “We’re a country of immigrants, but we’re also a country of laws.”

University of Texas Austin scholar Victoria deFrancesco Soto, interviewed here, argues “Folks don’t choose to be undocumented. When people say ‘get in line,’ many times the line doesn’t exist.”

Democratic Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke and Republican Will Hurd here agree that the wall is, as Hurd puts it, “the most expensive and least effective way to do border security.”

The River and the Wall sometimes goes in for homemade YouTube travel documentary-style whimsy. At one point Masters cuts away from something interesting Hurd was saying just to show DeAndrade clowning around about his saddle-soreness as a novice horse rider. Masters has a point, though. Two of these travelers, DeAndrade and Alvarado, were once illegal immigrants. DeAndrade, an irrepressible guy with a pierced lower lip, is now an award-winning photographer for National Geographic.

Both men are evidence not of what we’re losing by having immigrants, but what we’re gaining.

It’s unclear whether factors such as beauty, remoteness or common sense will save a wilderness that makes the heart soar to look upon it.

One proposal is combining Big Bend National Park with the Mexican nature reserves on the far side of the Rio, similar to Waterton Glacier International Peace Park on the US-Canada border. The River and the Wall displays such majesty that one understands how words fail the likable travelers. “Isn’t nature neat?” one exclaims.

Hill Music ‘Live From Laurel Canyon’ tells the stories of Hollywood’s singer-songwriter era

P IN THE Hollywood Hills West district of Los Angeles, a mere two miles from Hollywood Boulevard, there lies a relatively secluded enclave known as Laurel Canyon. Beginning in the mid-’60s and continuing for about a decade, the Canyon became an incubator for a particular kind of music.

Songwriters flocked to the Canyon, making homes there, developing their material and often collaborating

on projects. A celebration of that creatively fertile scene, “Live From Laurel Canyon” brings this history to light through songs and stories.

Singer-songwriter Brian Chartrand developed “Live From Laurel Canyon” to help audiences discover the connections among the many wellknown artists who came out of the Laurel Canyon scene. While people may know every word and every note of the songs in the 90-minute show, Chartrand says, “they might not know the context in which those songs were created.” That’s what “Live from Laurel Canyon” is all about.

“The focus of the show is how these young singer-songwriters took the elements of folk and rock & roll and made something great, changing the face of American popular music,” he explains. To do that, Chartrand and his six fellow musicians do more than simply play the songs.

“I like context,” he says. “So before we dive into the music, we provide a backdrop of what was happening socially and politically in the country.”

The events of the tumultuous 1960s had an enduring effect on most everyone who lived through that period. “It was a really interesting moment in American history,” Chartrand says, “with a generation of songwriters who were feeling disconnected from their parents’ music and disenfranchised from politics.”

“Live from Laurel Canyon” charts a chronological path from the Mamas and the Papas’ 1965 single “California Dreamin’”—following that thread as it intertwines with the stories of Buffalo Springfield, James Taylor,

Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Eagles, Jackson Browne and many others. “It just keeps going,” says Chartrand. The up-close-and-personal tone of the 90-minute concert helps place familiar songs into the wider context of popular culture.

Chartrand launched “Live From Laurel Canyon” in his Phoenix hometown a few years ago; today the show tours all over the US; a scaleddown version of the show toured Europe. Audiences everywhere connect with the songs and stories, he says. “All of that sentiment and talent coalesced in a special way that I’m not sure we’ll see again.”

My boyfriend dumped me and moved out of our place. I’m on the lease and can’t afford to break it, but it still feels like “our place,” and that’s making it hard to move on. My hippie friend said I should burn sage or light a candle and do a “letting go” meditation. Umm, okay. Can you please explain how rituals like this are bogus and unscientific so I can get her off my back?—Annoyed As I see it, lingering emotional distress like yours requires serious intervention—like sacrificing a goat on the coffee table.

Just kidding about the goat—but only because you’d have to hire crime scene cleaners afterward, which could get seriously pricey. Research by Harvard Business School’s Michael I. Norton, among others, actually finds that rituals— symbolic activities we do with some goal in mind—seem to help us feel better: less negative, less anxious and more in control.

Amazingly, this is even true for ritual-doers who don’t believe in the rituals and think they’re idiotic, embarrassing and pointless.

Annoyingly, researchers aren’t quite sure why rituals have this effect on us.

My guess is that we confuse the real with the symbolic. Research by cognitive neuroscientist Michael Gazzaniga suggests our mind is a master spin doctor, creating stories about our behavior that make us look consistent, rational and smart. And no sooner does it come up with those stories than it turns right around and believes them. In short, our mind is under the impression that we’re not stupid—that if we do something, we must have a good reason.

In other words, your friend is on to something, and you might use this to get her onto another thing: a ladder in your living room. I suggest a painting ritual: painting over your old life (in stylin’ new hues, of course) to transform the house you shared with your ex into a colorful new home of your own.

Per the research on ritual, ceremony would be an essential part of this, including explicitly calling what you’re doing a “ritual” and saying a few words, the way you would at a funeral.

Incorporate a ceremonial tearing-up of a photo of the two of you together, and have your friends chant, “Out, out, Steve! You are no longer welcome here!” Then have everybody accompany you to toss the pieces into the dumpster.

Admittedly, this ritual will probably seem seriously silly while you’re doing it, but you can just choose to buy into it and have a good time. While you’re at it, give your friend some props. She was on the right track in helping you rid your home of the Ghost of Boyfriend Past, despite suggesting burning a small bunch of cooking herbs when it probably seemed nothing short of arson would do the job.

I read in Bon Appetit about this woman who takes all her dates to Olive Garden to see whether they judge her when she pockets all the leftover breadsticks. Okay, whatever. But what I wanna see is whether somebody’s a good person. What kind of dates do you suggest for determining a potential boyfriend’s character and values?—Concerned Woman People often say you can discover a person’s true character from how they treat the waiter. Sure, rudeness to a waiter is a red flag, but it isn’t like we easily identify the sociopaths among us because they summon the server referee-style by blowing a whistle.

It helps to consider the roots of good, moral behavior: why people are good to other people. Evolutionary cognitive scientists Dan Sperber and Nicolas Baumard explain, “People may behave morally because they intrinsically value doing so—a genuine moral reason—or in order to gain the approval of others.” But there’s a complication: We all care about our reputation and doing things that put us in the best light, which is to say both

the worst people and the best people behave better when they know they’re being watched.

A person’s true character will come out over time. But there’s a way to speed up the dirtbag detection process: Observe a person’s behavior under harsh conditions.

In other words, consider getting kidnapped and held hostage together by the Albanian mob—or if that’s a little impractical for you, go camping or even just hike some challenging trail.

When the chips are down (like if you get injured), that’s when you see: Is he there for you, or is he the type to leave you to die in the wilderness? “I’d make a tourniquet for you, but this is a $400 Burberry shirt.”
