As a young family that recently migrated to the area, we appreciated the attention from another couple around our own age. You and your wife introduced yourselves at our neighborhood grocer’s, and it seemed natural enough— albeit a bit forward for total strangers. We exchanged pleasantries, agreed to get together over dinner sometime and even parted ways with firm embraces. At dinner, sadly, the mask slipped. Your charisma and charm suddenly seemed forced and feigned, and my wife and I briefly wondered whether you were salesfolks or swingers. You then segued into a pitch about some “miraculous” skincare line, to which we were like, “Yeah, no thanks.” We wanted to make friends, not become another notch in your MLM “downline.”

A new law granting public access to police misconduct records is already changing lives. One of the first revelations from Assemblywoman NANCY SKINNER’s SB 1421 led to trumped-up charges being dropped against a North Bay woman and pending termination for the officer who wrongfully arrested her. In nearby San Mateo County, the DA reopened a criminal probe into They an officer who solicited Did sex from a DUI detainee What? after records indicated that it was no isolated SEND TIPS TO incident. Santa Clara FLY@ County law enforcement METRONEWS. COM agencies have been more circumspect. Several of them cite California AG
XAVIER BECERRA’s position to block disclosure until the courts decide whether the law applies to records created before it went into effect. Palo Alto police said they found no proof whatsoever of sexual misconduct or dishonesty by its officers in the past five years, which is either a testament to the agency’s ethics or a huge red flag. Santa Clara County Sheriff LAURIE SMITH, by way of the county counsel, said SB 1421 disclosures are in the process of being compiled and redacted. Other local jurisdictions said the same.
LAURIE VALDEZ, whose partner was fatally shot by San Jose State cops in 2014, had a deadline for her public records request pushed back by the school and San Jose PD, which oversaw the investigation. SJPD sent similar responses to about a dozen families looking for answers about their loved ones’ fatal police encounters. Despite its freeze on disciplinary data, SJPD stood out as the most forthcoming of South Bay agencies so far by ID’ing all cops who fired a service weapon in the past decade. We now know the names of seven “repeat offenders” involved in the agency’s 60 officer-involved shootings since 2009: MARCO MERCADO, JACOB MORRIS, TIMOTHY FAYE, BRUCE BARTHELEMY, IAN COOLEY, MATTHEW BLACKERBY and ERIC BACHMAN. It falls short of SB 1421’s disclosure standards, but it’s a start.
BUILDING BLOCKS Historian Arturo Villarreal explores the life of San Jose’s first full-term mayor, full-blooded Apache Jose Manuel Gonzales, in his latest book.
Deep Roots The Peralta Adobe’s first resident is an overlooked figure in San Jose history BY MIKE HUGUENOR
A
RTURO VILLARREAL opens his new book with a quote from Uruguayan journalist Eduardo Galeano: “History never really says goodbye. History says, ‘See you later.’” It’s a fitting reminder for a piece of history that had been obscured almost entirely.
Jose Manuel Gonzales, recently published by Chusma House, is a brief but profound corrective to the historical record, the biography of San Jose’s second mayor (the first to serve a full term): a full-blooded Apache. “That’s unheard of, an Apache mayor,” Villarreal says. “And the more I dug, the more I realized there was so much more.”
In 1776, months before the Declaration of Independence, Jose Manuel Gonzalez came to the Bay Area with the De Anza expedition. A settler-soldier from Sonora, in what is now Mexico, Gonzales was a private in the Spanish colonial army before serving as alcade (mayor) at el Pueblo San Jose de Guadalupe. But like The Purloined Letter, Gonzales’ significance to the city of San Jose has often been hidden in plain sight. A plaque mounted next to the Peralta Adobe House describes the landmark: “The last vestige of El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, the simple adobe, rehabilitated in the mid-19th century, is believed built before 1800 by Manuel Gonzalez, an Apache, who was one of the pobladores (founders).”
Mounted in 1976 by the San Jose Historic Landmarks Commission, the plaque does name Gonzales, but only as the builder of this “simple adobe.” Nothing is said of his status as mayor, or that he was the structure’s original inhabitant, living in it until his death. Instead, the information is presented as if Gonzales was a construction worker. For years, this was the only mention of Gonzales posted near the home he built. Then, in 2011 San Pedro Square Market was built around the adobe. At that time, an information display erected by History San Jose helped to better explain his significance. It read, “The adobe in front of you was constructed by Manuel Gonzales, an Apache indian, member of the De Anza party, and one of San Jose’s first alcades, or mayors.” Over the years, Villarreal had seen the plaques, and they both stuck with him. Then, while researching for Mexicans in San Jose, a photo book co-written with Nannette Regua, he noticed them again. “I was working on the first chapter, which deals with the founding of San Jose. It took me back to the Peralta Adobe House, and once again, there was that plaque staring me in the
opposed to over there, and why is it segregated over there and more open here. That always captured my attention.’” Every summer, the Villarreal family returned to San Jose, staying with relatives and working the prune fields, getting paid by the box for their labor. Eventually, his mother started working in the canneries that once defined Midtown and North San Jose. After high school, Villarreal stayed in the Bay Area, earning an AA from San Jose City College before transferring to San Jose State, where he obtained two bachelor's degrees and a master’s in social science. “Learning about all these different cultures that I had encountered over the years, I was intrigued by that. Anthropology gave me that platform,” he says. Today, Villarreal’s work mostly focuses on pre-Columbian societies, indigenous peoples and the history of California before its colonial days. But with two books on San Jose history now published, he is also becoming an important voice in documenting the city’s past, fleshing out our understanding of a city with a unique history. Without asking it directly, one of the most important questions raised by Jose Manuel Gonzales relates back to San Jose’s first historic landmark: the Peralta Adobe House. Considering that it was built by a boundarybreaking San Josean, one of the city’s first politicians and one of the few visible native politicians in U.S. history, why would the Peralta House be named after it’s second inhabitant? It is often said that white supremacy isn’t just Klan robes and hoods; it is also the systematic rewriting of history to highlight the narratives of white peoples above all others. “I like to give people the benefit of the doubt,” Villarreal says. “Maybe they just didn’t understand beyond the fact that he built it and that he was a settler, that he was so much more. “I think about our Native American population,” he continues, as our chat comes to an end. “I wonder, when do they hear about their heroes or their figures— whether they’re heroes or not? Native Americans of significance. They don’t get that.” Historically, they haven’t. But history has a way of saying, “See you later.”

face,” he says. “It was haunting me, you know. I thought, ‘I got to get this person out. People need to know about this Apache man.’” In addition to being one of San Jose’s first leaders, Gonzales helped build the Presidio in San Francisco, where his family were some of the first residents. Afterward, as part of unit known for its agricultural skills, he traveled down to San Jose, founding the city along the Guadalupe River. To this day, the one remaining structure still standing from San Jose’s original pueblo is one Gonzales hand-built: the Peralta Adobe House. “I said, ‘I gotta write an article.’ Maybe submit it to NACCS, “ the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies, Villarreal recalls. “Then more information presented itself and it was like, ‘I got enough for a little book here.’” Though it is slim, Jose Manuel Gonzales paints a remarkable picture of one of San Jose’s founders—one that had a nearly been painted over—and a unique figure in American history in general. Not only was Gonzales one of San Jose’s first mayors, he is one of the very few native mayors in U.S. history. Aided by Villarreal’s clear, concise prose, Jose Manuel Gonzeles (the first biography published on its subject), is an important contribution to history, local and beyond. But the author has a remarkable story of his own. An anthropology and ethnic studies professor at Evergreen Valley College for the last 29 years, Villarreal was born in the 1950s to a family of migrant farm workers. He was only 6 years old when he began working San Jose’s prune fields. “When you’re that young, you don’t work that hard,” he says. “You work in the shade. But you do have to work.” Villarreal’s family came to California from the small border town of Del Rio, Texas, and all throughout his youth Arturo travelled back and forth to Texas. There, up until he was a sophomore in high school, he attended segregated schools. “It was very different than it was here,” he says, “though I do believe that that informed my future education. I was always aware of the different ethnic groups here as

UPWARD BOUND A 22-story apartment tower will replace the near-century-old downtown San Jose building.
Historic Woolworth Building Set for Tear-Down BY RACHEL SANDLER Downtown San Jose is officially saying goodbye to the historic Woolworth building. The city’s Planning Commission last week approved a permit for the demolition of the 27 S. First St. structure, putting Dallas-based developer Alterra Worldwide one step closer to breaking ground on a proposed 22-story residential tower. The project includes 374 marketrate residential units and a 35,712 square foot retail space on the bottom floor. The new development follows a raft of forthcoming projects in downtown San Jose, as developers see an opportunity to build housing before BART extends to Diridon Station in the heart of the city. “The city and the region are facing a major housing crisis because there is not enough housing,” Erik Schoennauer, a land use consultant on the project, told San Jose Inside. “The only solution is to build more housing, and the best place
to build housing is in an urban neighborhood served by transit.” All of the units will be market-rate because, Schoennauer said, the project doesn’t “pencil out” with affordable housing units, meaning that it wouldn’t be profitable enough. The project doesn’t have a retail tenant lined up yet, Schoennauer added, but developers envision a restaurant on the bottom floor. “It’s great if we can have people living and working in proximity to downtown,” said Patrick Kelly, a project manager in the city’s planning division. “We want to create some life on the street, with people living and shopping and spending time in downtown.” Built in 1925, the Woolworth building with preserved terrazzo floors sits in San Jose’s nationallyregistered downtown historic district across from the city’s first skyscraper, the 14-story Bank of Italy building. Up until 1997, the building was home to a Woolworth department store, which
in its heyday was among the country’s largest department store chains. After Woolworths shuttered, the site has seen several failed attempts at revitalizing downtown. The city’s redevelopment agency bought the property in 1998 and leased it to House of Blues, committing a $5.7 million subsidy to have it turned into a music venue. But the deal fell apart in 2002, and in 2005 the Black Sea Gallery furniture store moved in. The building became a Ross discount department store from 2010 to 2016. Since then, the building has been occupied by Local Color, a nonprofit artist hub that occupies buildings awaiting development. Alterra Worldwide still has get two additional permits before the building will be demolished for construction, which Schoennauer anticipates will take up to six months. Still, Schoennauer said Alterra Worldwide plans to break ground on schedule and already has a contractor in mind.
2020 Contenders Emerge in San Jose’s D4 Huy Tran shares some defining characteristics with San Jose Councilman Lan Diep. Each one’s a 30-something-yearold first-generation VietnameseAmerican who became a lawyer before charting a path to public service. They’re also longtime acquaintances who’ve worked together on local legislation, Diep as a District 4 councilor and Tran as his San Jose Housing and Community Development Commission appointee. But their political differences inspired Tran—who endorsed Diep in his narrowly-won bid for the D4 seat in 2016—to challenge his re-election in 2020. It’s a race that potentially pits them Huy Tran both against Berryessa Unified School District trustee David Cohen, 50, who told San Jose Inside that he’s still on the fence about a 2020 run. Diep, a soon-to-be-35-year-old policy wonk with a penchant for showmanship, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Tran said the D4 councilman made clear in a one-on-one meeting that he welcomes the challenge. “I sat down with him recently and told him,” recounted Tran, 36, who officially announced his candidacy Monday in a press release touting endorsement from Assemblyman Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), a close friend and political mentor. “And it was very amicable because that’s the kind of relationship we have. I said, basically, that I’m running because people deserve choices.”On that point, Tran said they both agreed. —Jennifer Wadsworth

IN THE PINK A flock of flamingos visits ‘Ramandu’s Table,’ one of 10 works in Bruce Munro’s ‘Stories in Light’ at Montalvo.
Night Light Dinner at Villa Montalvo proves an enlightening experience BY GARY SINGH
F
OR ALMOST SIX months, the stunning lightbased works of Bruce Munro have illuminated the nighttime spirits of Villa Montalvo. Ranging from enormous landscape installations to more intimate projects, the 10 exhibits, collectively titled Stories in Light, transform the Montalvo environs until March 17. So far, several thousand visitors have parked at West Valley College and paid to ride a shuttle into the grounds,
where the lawns, gardens, terraces and other structures now conjure up wonderlands based on C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia, thanks to Munro. When Stories in Light began to wind down its run few weeks ago, the anti-man-about-town showed up to witness a panel session inside the Carriage House Theatre, titled, “Artists on Light and Public Space,” moderated by Barbara Goldstein, a leading national voice in public art planning and urban placemaking. Goldstein consults cities around the country and was the city of San Jose’s public art director for years, during which she brought an outre
contemporary art panache far beyond most people in that building. I say this not because she gave me a lift to the event, but because it’s true. Before the panel session, though, our visit necessitated a serious nosh-up because the Lucas Artists Residency Program at Montalvo is quite unique in the worldwide matrix of creative residencies. Right here in Silicon Valley, it’s easy to take Montalvo for granted being that it’s only a short drive away, yet every year about 60 artists from all over the world show up to live and work for a few months in any one of 10 different LEED-certified studio and living spaces. Teams of architects and artists designed each of the buildings with specific disciplines in mind, whether it’s painting, music, film, design or creative writing. Each artist residency includes dinner Monday through Thursday and lunch on Friday, all conjured up in a professional kitchen by resident culinary artist Andrea Blum. Teams of artists, scientists and stray directionless newspaper columnists all show up on occasion to join the feasts.
That said, our particular spread put us at a long epicurean table just off the kitchen inside the Knight Ridder Commons Building. Current and former Lucas Program artists joined in for the meal. A few hailed from as far away as New Zealand. Another, Zeinab Alhashemi, a conceptual artist, designer and also a SETI artist in residence, had just flown in that day from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Still another, the painter Monica Lundy, who splits her time between Los Angeles and Italy, schooled me on Roman arches throughout our meal. This is not an elite experience completely off limits to mere mortals, however. On the last Friday of each month, Montalvo offers the public a sneak peek behind the scenes into what transpires on the property, with one of the resident artists presenting either a lecture, performance or conversation about his or her work. Anyone can buy a ticket. Later that night, cold weather descended over the property. Visitors bundled up and even shivered underneath their skin as they navigated the grounds to see the Munro exhibits before attending the panel session in the Carriage House Theatre, which included Jim Campbell, creator of the Salesforce tower illumination, and media artist Andrea Polli, as they both discussed their own work. Campbell offered wondrous anecdotes from behind the scenes of the 11,000-LED display he orchestrated for the top floors of the Salesforce Tower, a display that changes depending on how he programs it. When he first tested the display from his laptop in a Potrero Hill bar, he realized that with his ability to alter an entire skyline at the press of a button, a serious degree of responsibility, and power, came along with the project. Polli, on the other hand, recently lit up the Rachel Carson Bridge in Pittsburgh using 27,000 LEDs powered by wind turbines to create a temporary light display, altered in real time by weather data. Another of Polli’s projects, Particle Falls, debuted right here in San Jose during the 2010 ZeroOne Biennial, a project Goldstein helped incubate and a project that went on to appear all over the world. The anti-man-about-town left the Montalvo grounds thoroughly illuminated.

14 VIRTUALLY LIMITLESS It is unclear where virtual reality is headed, but one thing is for sure—it’s here to stay.

RT HAS ALWAYS been about looking forward. Even when artistic movements cast their gaze back—as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood did in the mid-19th century— innovation is inevitable. New techniques, new philosophies and new ways of interpreting the world are born when artists push themselves to break with the mold. Often, the greatest works of art not only hit upon something new, but something entirely unexpected.
This year’s Cinequest embraces art’s capacity to surprise, shock and challenge. Rebranded as the Cinequest
Film & Creativity Festival, the theme for 2019 is “The Unexpected.” Along with movies, the festival will feature more live dance, poetry and on-stage performance than ever before. And, as it has for the past several years, Cinequest will continue to showcase the latest in virtual reality and augmented reality, with demonstrations, workshops and talks focused on the state of the art. The idea is to give fans and film professionals a glimpse of what the future of virtual reality storytelling might look like. Terminator Salvation: Fight for the Future is just one example of how virtual reality is already finding its way into movie theaters. Recently opened at Century 20 Oakridge, the interactive narrative drops participants directly into the action. Wearing sensors on their shoes,
chest and special gloves, viewers—or perhaps players—are transformed into a cybernetic skeleton with a custom photo avatar. Whisked through a portal to the post-apocalyptic ruins of downtown Los Angeles, players are tasked with powering up a downed communications station before being blasted to pieces. The things that work—namely the sensory exhilaration—dwarf the stuff that doesn’t. May Yam, who manages the Film and VR Department for Cinequest, says the experience was a mixed bag. “It met my expectations, and in some places it fell short,” Yam says, who previously worked with Atari and has plenty of experience with first-person shooters. “One thing I really enjoyed about the experience is when you look over to see a fellow player, even
if they look like a robot, they move and acted like the player. The avatar’s height is your height—the personality is shining through the costume.” At Cinequest, Yam has curated a number of varied virtual reality experiences with the aim of demonstrating how the technology is changing cinema. The Virtual Reality Experience Lounge is offering 14 different programs, including the reservationonly Eclipse, a hyperreality experience that lasts an hour, with a 25-minute briefing and a 35-minute runtime. “It looks like you’re an astronaut, running around on your ship, interacting with teammates,” Yam explains of Eclipse. In Moss, viewers will pilot a cartoon mouse through a labyrinth of dangers. Yam was very affected by

it: “I said to my husband, ‘I’m never going to kill another mouse again.’” Just as plaintive is Re-Animated, a VR attempt to bring back the realm of the o-o bird of Kaua’i. The species was driven to extinction in the 1970s; and Crow: The Legend VR by animators from Dreamworks. There are five Virtual Reality Workshops for those interested in learning about the history of VR technology and the ways its being used today. There are also seven 20-minute virtual reality programs attendees can drop into anytime, 11am to 7pm, from Mar. 7-10. Yam and her husband Greg Annable are the Y and A of YA Studios. They work on pieces for the public good, in connection with Rotary International. They’re emphasizing subjects such as
homelessness and the eradication of polio. “We also want to come up with a system where we take these 360-degree goggles to hospitals to calm people who are going through chemo or recovery from surgery”— children could even be distracted from kicking up an objection to shots. Yam says that the future of VR is as vast. Decreasing prices, increased accessibility and the increasing capacity of these devices will help determine what becomes of this new media. Of course, she notes, there are many who have their doubts. “Some people are scared of VR, or are too lazy to put on a headset,” she says. But the ball has already been set in motion. In fact, the surest evidence of the inevitability of virtual reality lies in
the skepticism that surrounds the technology, according to Matthew Wilson Smith, professor in the departments of German Studies and Theater & Performance Studies at Stanford. Smith says there would be no grim dystopian visions about VR or complaints that the technology isn’t living up to its full potential if it weren’t for the fact that humans have been dreaming about virtual reality for millennia. “One could speculate and imagine that the origins of virtual reality lie deep in the paintings of ancient caves,” Smith says, pivoting to Plato’s famous Allegory of the Cave—a story familiar to anyone who has taken an introductory philosophy course. “It’s no accident that when Plato goes for his foundational myth of human
consciousness, he goes to the symbol of the cave.” Caves, where early humans gathered to tell stories and scrawl on the rock walls, served as a kind of alternate reality—a safe space where the imagination could wander, free from real-world dangers. Looking back across Western mythologies, Smith says that caves are a constant. “It’s seen as either a nightmare or delusion or something utopian and paradysical,” he says. Springing forward to the works of Richard Wagner, Smith picks up the thread again, noting that Wagner was one of the first opera producers who insisted that the theater turn off the lights while his works were performed. Before Wagner’s time, the opera was a place to see and be seen; he rebelled against this idea. Insisting

that his productions should be given full, unbroken attention, he sought to transport his audiences to faraway and magical realms. He worked with theaters to develop technologies that could simulate flying horses and underwater scenes. “For him this was a quasi-religious experience as well,” Smith says. “This was not mere entertainment.” Of course, entertainment is often much more than a diverting pursuit. Just as Yam hopes to use virtual reality technology to ease the suffering of cancer patients, many directors and filmmakers have used their art to change the way people see the world. This year Cinequest will honor the work of the visionary silent film star Buster Keaton, who pioneered the art of acting for a camera as opposed to a theater audience. Keaton developed a new performative language based on more subtle facial expressions and quick cuts. His 1928 film, Steamboat Bill, Jr., will be screened on Mar. 15 at the California Theatre (see page 18 for more). There will also be plenty of socially conscious films at Cinequest. One of this year’s Maverick Spirit Award winners is Nandita Das, an Indian actor and director with a new film about Saadat Hasan Manto. The Indian-born Manto wrote novels, essays, short stories and plays—mostly in Urdu—and gained a reputation for his social criticism and unflinching portrayal of Indian life. Manto was screened on opening night. Additionally, veteran actor and director Emilio Estevez will attend this year’s Cinequest to engage in a conversation about his new film, The Public, which tells the story of a Cincinnati librarian helping provide shelter to the homeless during a severe cold snap (see page 16 for more). —Nick Veronin & Richard von Busack

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE ‘The Public’ follows the story of a rogue librarian giving Cincinnati’s homeless shelter from the cold.
Public Demonstration Emilio Estevez screens new socially conscious drama at Cinequest
BY RICHARD von BUSACK
I
AM WRITING this during the atmospheric river monsoons, looking up at the curtains of rain and thinking, God help those without a roof over their heads. Riding BART to work, I see the miles of tent cities along the tracks. Is it too early to call them Trumpvilles? Inside the train, I watch as the unsheltered curl up in knots, trying get a little sleep on the hard, plastic seats. One couldn’t ask for a film more relevant than Emilio Estevez’s The Public, about a impromptu revolution at the Cincinnati Public Library on a sub-freezing night. Bookish, smaller-than-life librarian Stuart Goodson (Estevez) is being asked to quit by his boss (Jeffrey Wright); there’s been a lawsuit filed by a patron Goodson evicted for stinking up the library. One night, the patrons whom Stuart knows well, have no place to stay and are unwilling to be
turned out into the freezing cold. The occupation turns into an all night drama, demonstrating the institution’s new role as, among its other functions, a refuge for the poorest of the poor. Estevez will be on hand at Cinequest for a screening of this Ken Loach-like film. San Jose librarian Jill Bourne, 2017’s Library Journal pick for librarian of the year, will be interviewing Estevez. Bourne’s fund-raising through Measure B helped reopen branch libraries throughout the Valley, closed because of budget crises in the early years of this decade. There is a lot of fun in The Public, such as the satisfactory sight of a snotty prosecutor (Christian Slater) getting a taste of his own medicine. Alec Baldwin, kind of a national hero these days, is a police crisis negotiator whose son has been swept up in the undertow of drugs. The seemingly drastic yet simple solution to the standoff has its own kind of common sense. And the anecdotes of street life are something like the stories of Ohio’s own Harvey Pekar. “Get a library card,
impress your friends!” Stuart says, as Pekar might have. Taylor Schilling brings zest as the outrageously flirtatious super of Stuart’s apartment. Jena Malone has her own charm as Stuart’s sunshine-leftist co-worker whose ringtone is “La Marseillaise.” Gabrielle Union is a predatory TV newscaster; I liked her cheerful wink at a passerby who had just dressed her down as a media pig. Estevez needs little introduction. He was a hard-working A-list actor in the 1980s in The Breakfast Club, St Elmo’s Fire...most cherished of all, Repo Man. Alex Cox’s sort-of kind-of sequel to Kiss Me Deadly (1955) starred Estevez as Otto, an LA punk-rocker taken on a celestial journey. Estevez was a Santa Monica kid who grew up to be a director of some 30 years standing. One was Bobby, a sort of Grand Hotel at the about-tobe demolished Ambassador Hotel in L.A., on the night Robert Kennedy was assassinated. Estevez is the son of Martin Sheen and the brother of the notorious Charlie Sheen. (I don’t want to make too much out of Stuart’s last name “Goodson,” but eh, Estevez was.) Via phone, Estevez says The Public began 12 years ago, after he read an L.A. Times article by Salt Lake City assistant librarian Chip Ward titled “How the Public Library Became the Heartbreak Hotel.” “I was moved by the piece. The libraries have become de facto homeless shelters,” Estevez says. “I did a lot of research at the downtown Los Angeles public library for Bobby. All the things Ward had experienced in Salt Lake were very similar to what was going on in L.A. “I was writing this in 2007, long before the Trump election. In 2008, I had a fully realized script and funding. Then the economic crisis hit. So I went to Spain to make The Way”—all about the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. “I was able to reboot The Public, but set it in Cincinnati. Ohio state offers a very generous tax rebate. With the help of the city and the Cincy film commission, we started in early 2017.” Estevez sold his house in California and bought a place in Cincinnati's historic Over-the-Rhine district. “I packed up my car with everything
17 Estevez doesn’t necessarily look back in pleasure on the work he did as a young man. “My early directorial films were derivative and silly, and my mother gave me the advice that I should direct about what I knew. It helped shift my focus. I’m never going to make a superhero or outer space movie, because I don’t know anything about it. And even if some of those films are entertaining or technically surprising, they focus less on relationships and humanity than what I’m interested in. I’m finally doing movies about things that are personal to me.” He had advice from his mother; had there been any advice on dealing with filmmaking or the industry itself from his father, Martin Sheen? “That question actually brings things around full circle. He’s a believer in nonviolent civil disobedience, and he’s been arrested 68 times. Always on the local news, and sometimes on the national news, I’d see him carted off in handcuffs, reciting the Lord’s prayer. “Sometimes, he looked like a lunatic. I’d worry that he was destroying his career, and becoming one of a long list of blacklisted actors known more for political activism than their work. Years later, I understand him spiritually; he was demonstrating ’the sublime madness’ Reinhold Niebuhr describes in of engaging with fascism. Sartre said, ‘I do not fight fascists because I think I’ll win, I fight them because they are fascists.’ My father’s political activism informs The Public. I hope this movie pushes back against the cruelty of the times and this administration. Nothing would make me happier if people rally around this film. “ After its night at Cinequest The Public is getting an April 1 premiere at the 42nd Street Branch Library in Times Square, and then a 15-city theatrical release.

I wanted, in two suitcases. Since I finished the film, I’ve been back in California, staying a lot in hotels and friends’ couches. Generally I go six months here and six months there. These days, with the climate crisis, it’s not as easy to cherry-pick the best time of the year to be in Cincinnati.” So there he was, a Hollywood type coming to urban Ohio to delve into the lower class. He faced some suspicion. “I talked to the homeless on record and off. Their stories were tragic, but a lot of them are really eager to tell what happened to them. I explained to the library that the film was going to support the core tenets of what a library does, and that I wanted to abide by the rules and stay out of their way. We worked during closing hours and vacated in the morning after making the set safe. We were in a pretty good groove. The crew was respectful of the place. Sometimes, when a film crew goes into a private home or institution, they wreak havoc. So pretty specific ground rules were obeyed.“ Like any other American city, Cincinnati has a homeless problem. “There are people dealing with it. Shelter House is the best known. And there are organizations in town that’ll tell you it’s not as bad there as it is in other cities. But they just recently moved a tent city away from the base of I-75, right near the Great American Ballpark. “Universal health care is one thing, but we have to get to universal housing. It can’t be conditional on sobriety. You really can’t get the treatment for your problems without getting a roof over your head. Housing first, then the treatment, and then the support groups.” The Public has a moving section where his Stuart reads from John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, contrasting the richness of America with the degradation of the poor. Estevez notes, “It’s the 80th anniversary of this book this April, and it’s more relevant now than ever. If Steinbeck were alive, he’d recognize the Hoovervilles. While no one walks this planet without some trauma in their lives, this kind of deep insecurity the homeless face is a measure of terrible trauma.”

SEA LEGS Buster Keaton’s 1928 film ‘Steamboat Bill, Jr.’ is a fantastic entry point into the world of silent cinema.
Silence is Golden Cinequest revives two of Buster Keaton’s greatest silent films— ‘Steamboat Bill, Jr.’ and ‘The High Sign’ BY RICHARD von BUSACK
V
ERY LUCKY, THOSE being introduced to Joseph “Buster” Keaton, monarch of sophisticated slapstick. But those who’ve been watching the straightfaced comedian all their lives are surprised with every new viewing. Keaton was as gifted an engineer of gags as he was an expert of the existentially emotionless closeup. “Frigo” they called him in France, slang for a refrigerator; sometimes it was “the man who never smiles” or, in honor of a metaphysical short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, “The Great Stone Face.”
In a 1946 interview with Marcel Lapierre, Keaton explained the flywheel of his comedy: “The greater a comic’s indifference, the more astonished he seems by the public’s laughter.’ Keaton had a neutrality made for cinema, that broke with the tradition of comic theatrical gesticulations in favor of the slight, nonplussed reactions. His was a quality that will never go out of style; think of James Bond’s registering nothing after some gigantic explosion, except maybe to reach to his throat and straighten his tie. There was never a gag too cartoonish for Keaton. The High Sign, one of the two films revived at Cinequest, has him paint a hook on the wall, which he then hangs his hat upon. As comedian and inventor, Keaton was
top-hatted monopolist named King (Tom McGuire) and an old captain, his father: the Liam Neeson-like Ernest Torrence, owner of his paddlewheeled tub the Stonewall Jackson. Divorced, separated or otherwise, the riverboatman Steamboat Bill hasn’t seen his son since he was a baby. Bill Jr. grew up to be a proper Bostonian mollycoddle, in smart beret and French mustaches. His mortified father decides to make a man of this skinny, undersized youth, even as Keaton introduces a Montague-Capulet angle. By coincidence, Bill the Younger runs into a friend from back east, King’s collegiate daughter (Marion Byron). The scene-by-scene stuff is of constant hilarity, sometimes dramatically dire: The big man ordering his son to strip, to get him into some proper work clothes, is a reminder of how fathers treated their sons a century ago. More often the comedy is lighter. Bill Senior is arrested by the sheriff. Visiting, Buster tries to signal to his dad, who has all but disowned him, that there’s some jailbreaking tools hidden in a homebaked loaf of bread. (Busted, Buster says, “That must have happened when the dough fell in the toolbox.”) And there’s the finale of the ultimate blustery day, which blows him out of the hospital and crosstown in a rolling bed. Buster faces the catastrophe quizzically, because of several blows to the head during the course of the day. The air of wooziness makes the nimble escapes even more startling. Universally declared a masterpiece now, Steamboat Bill Jr. was a financial failure. It ended Keaton’s production company and sent him into inferior films, as well as a period of heavy drinking. Aversion therapy conquered the booze (“Just beer now!” he told an interviewer) and Keaton was revived and celebrated as a hero of cinema for many years before his death. Relating the plot of a Keaton short is like being someone describing a dream. The opener “The High Sign” (1921) is about homicide at the seaside. Bumming around a Santa Cruz-like boardwalk, Keaton notices an ad in a tarp-size newspaper, seeking a shill at a shooting gallery.

the proto-cartoon; the great animators learned from him. Odd that the crude Disney-Iwerks Mickey Mouse cartoon Steamboat Willie is now better known than the film that sired it, Keaton’s Steamboat Bill, Jr. But Keaton’s best works, sometimes a century old, have aged well because of the way they’re built. His films work as comedies and adventures. And in the indirectly comic scenes (that is, where he’s in situations where he hasn’t registered the trouble beginning) Keaton shows himself as an actor of great sensitivity and soul, far too dry for pathos. Around him are gesticulating bullies twice his size, or women sulking prettily, waiting to have their hurt feelings soothed; Buster can play all the dramatic beats a scene requires. Thinking of Keaton, one considers his ingenuity in flashes. Search for Steamboat Bill, Jr, on YouTube, and you find a clip titled “A House Falls on Buster Keaton.” One could as easily search for items such as “Buster Keaton rides a sinking boat to the bottom of the ocean”; or “Buster Keaton walks into a movie screen and takes his place in action on screen,” or “is almost eaten alive by a roll of flypaper,” or “chased down a hill by rolling boulders,” or “swings across a waterfall like SpiderMan,” or “lights his cig from the fuse of an anarchists’ bomb.” More than one house falls on Buster during the fantastic windstorm scene in Steamboat Bill Jr, in which the propwash of six big aircraft engines blows away the village he’d built, for a cost of about $400,000 in 1920s money. But the most famous housefall is the entire front of a two-story house, with one tiny open window just wide enough to save him. The set weighed a couple of tons and would have squashed Keaton as flat as his hat if he hadn’t done the math. (The mark Keaton had to hit was quite small—a nail, apparently.) Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) is more than just the house falling on Buster. It’s a story of obsolescence and filial disappointment. It was shot alongside the Sacramento River in Westport, just outside of the state capital, posing beautifully as the riparian American South. Keaton becomes the focal point of a struggle between a

(Their secret sign of recognition is like a doublethumbing of the nose.) Drafted into their ranks, Buster flinches away from the skull he’s supposed to be swearing an oath upon—and it nips his fingers. The climax takes place in a cutaway two-story house ridden with booby traps, secret passages and chutes. Buster slides through walls and crashes through swivelling doors, while saving the wealthy miser August Nicklenurser from a squad of buzzards, thus winning the tightwad’s dim, uke-playing daughter. LOVE VIRTUALLY in ‘Auggie,’ Richard Kind develops a relationship with an augmented reality companion.
Auggie Connecticut architect Felix (Richard Kind) endures his retirement party with the air of a man who is not leaving under his own speed. But instead of the customary gold watch, he receives the next step in voice-activated digital assistant: a pair of glasses that allows him to see the beautiful young augmentedreality creature Auggie (Christen Harper), who gives him the kind of devotion every crumbling middle-age man supposes he deserves. An added accessory, sent by mail: a pair of pathic pants to make the experience anatomically correct. Actor turned director Matt Kane’s debut is in an uncomfortable zone between Black Mirror style speculative fiction and a straight metaphor for porn addiction; the payoff seems to make it more like the latter. But Kind (the blighted brother in A Serious Man), a master of downtrodden types, brings grit, impatience and hurt in this role, with undertones reminiscent of Jack Lemmon’s big career role in Save the Tiger. (Plays Mar 9, 3:50pm at Hammer, Mar 10 at 6pm, Mar 12pm at 2:15pm, and Mar 14 at 7:20pm, Redwood City)
Clownvets A beloved bit of old movie dialogue: “Your plan is so crazy, it just might work!” It seems
a particularly bizarre idea to recruit PTSDstruck old soldiers from north Michigan—very serious men that they are—to become hospital clowns under the direction of the documentary’s exec producer, Patch Adams, MD. This motley-clad, Kaiser-mustached healer, famously the subject of a 1998 Robin Williams film, leads a busload of newly minted bozos to Central American hospitals. They travel to places so undeveloped that they haven’t acquired a fear of clowns yet. “I’m not so much used to going around, spreading joy,” says one worried would-be entertainer. But serious-faced clowning works, too, and the experience of dealing with the patients seems to ease some of the bad memories and shattered nerves they got in battle. Since it’s produced by Adams’ Gesundheit! Institute, director Estaban Rojas’ documentary seems slightly promotional: There’s not an underside to this, nor do we meet either vets or patients who failed to cope with this kind of therapy. However, it’s interesting to learn that salaried hospital clowns are now mandated in several South American countries; you have to admire people who go into a line of work that would really test one’s faith in the power of comedy. I’ll be there to do the moderation on stage. (Plays Mar 7 at 7:20pm at the California Theater, Mar 8 at 11:30am, Mar 9 at 5:30pm and Mar 11 at 7:15pm in Redwood City)
Bill Nighy Maverick Spirit Award As an actor, Bill Nighy has cornered a market: he’s the last great stiff upper lip-wielder. As crumbling as the White Cliffs of Dover, Nighy excels as the charred rock star whose heyday is gone, the dead-behind-the-eyes stick insect of a British bureaucrat, and—particularly good—as the discreetly hopeful lover. In his signature role in Love, Actually, he exemplified the cold climate, hot blood paradox, having a wounded, compassionate heart but being too well bred to show it. In a lighter vein, he was almost Lovecraftian in the Pirates of the Caribbean series as the undersea horror Davy Jones of Davy Jones’ Locker fame, a resurrected buccaneer halfway evolved into something that should be spread out on ice at a fishmonger’s. He had a beard of writhing tentacles and a crab’s leg for a peg, the smoke of his pipe oozed from his gills: “of his bones are coral made.” Unrecognizable under all that seafood, Nighy made Jones’s voice emphatic; nightmare Glaswegian, smothered into a guttural quack by noselessness. Nighy also had a piece of that blessed annuity to the British thespian, as Minister Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a last line of defense who fell to the horror of Voldemort). Debuting at Cinequest: Sometimes Always Never is a forlorn North England comedy—exactly the sort of thing made for Nighy—about a Scrabble-worshiping father searching for his long lost son. (Mar 6 at 7:15pm at the California Theatre.)
Bring Me an Avocado A lesson in why surprise parties are a bad idea, this new drama by the Bay Area’s Maria Mealla (Women and Cigarettes) begins with the birthday of Robin (Sarah Burkhalter). By the time the evening is over, this mother of two young girls is left in the hospital in a long coma. Her husband George (Bernardo Peña) is in a state of bright-eyed denial, and does what he can to try to cheer up his family and keep things positive. But his wife’s sister Greece (the Lauren Graham-like Molly Ratterman, the film’s standout) and her best pal Jada (Candace Roberts) provide friction by sticking around the house during the crisis, getting a little too close to George and his daughters. Some aspects of Bring Me an Avocado are going to help it out as a possible audience favorite for the fest: UCSC’s Gavin V. Murray makes Oakland as radiant as it’s ever been in a movie. And Mealla doesn’t blame any one person for the fracas to come, not laying the guilt upon George’s weakness under stress. Moreover she’s quite good with the child actors. But this compact drama

Peterloo
(Mar 8, 7:15pm, Hammer; Mar 10, 1:05pm Redwood City; Mar 16, 12:15pm Redwood City; Mar 17; 10:45am, California Theatre.)
This August is the bicentennial of the Peterloo massacre in Manchester, in which vets of the Napoleonic wars cavalry charged into a demonstration of unarmed protestors. Shelley honored the slain in a poem that was too angry to publish during his lifetime: “Rise like lions!” he urged the starving and unrepresented English working class. After this atrocity, the kind of laid-low workers Dickens depicted in Bleak House fought for their rights. Mike Leigh is the most immersive of British directors (Secrets and Lies, Mr Turner); the one who builds most organically and who seems to understand history more than any other director alive. He sets the stage for the massacre from the bottom of society to the top (the decadent Prince of Wales, the regent for crazy George III, who resembled Elvis in his final years). It’s at this point unpreviewed, outside of some European film festivals. There has been an interesting range of opinions, calling it everything from talkey to indelible. (Mar 11, 6:30pm, Hammer.)
Happier Times, Grump One of the most outright appealing films at Cinequest 2019. In these days of European nationalism, one is suspicious of folkloric comedies, and whether the Powers that Be have an agenda to lure their citizens back to the heartlands they’re quitting for the cities. But from the first sighting of old man Mielensaphoittaja (Heikki Kinnunen), it’s clear Tiina Lyme’s dry comedy is going to be well shaped. The old Finnish grumpus is a man of few pronouns, a spud farmer with a Leonid Brezhnev scowl; he’s a wearer of plaid shirts, suspenders and a homemade pelt hat with earflaps, a bonnet the size of a grizzly bear’s head. His is a glottal language that, when the speaker is miffed, sounds exactly like a Klingon raging at Captain Kirk. He grudgingly shows up at his wife’s funeral just to announce to the crowd, “Reminisce. I will go and die”—and quits to build his coffin in his garage. His expatriate son, in town for mom’s funeral, is a heartless businessman raising up his daughter Sofia (Satu Tuuli Karhu, a good thunderstruck comedienne) to go to Princeton. Instead, she got drunk and impregnated, and now has to hide from her parents at grandad’s potato farm. It’s more than cute-codger comedy, having some pepper in it. Lyme is good with the the folkloric appeal of trees, creeks, inarguable folk wisdom, odd rural characters and accordions (the Finns are perhaps Earth’s most deft accordionists these days). Tucson Salvage In his Tucson Weekly columns Tucson Salvage: Tales from La Frontera, Brian Jabas Smith has been writing deep-focused, sensitive profiles of the kind of people the Trumpers and the police demonize: everyone from junkies to day laborers from Oaxacan villages. In a multimedia evening, Smith and his wife, director Maggie Smith, will be world premiering a pilot program for a TV series now in development based on the columns; before the screening, Smith will be reading from his works at the MLK Library. OFF BALANCE Though presented beautifully, Camper’s steamed cod dish was overpowered by its bitter pine nut romesco.
Roughing It Camper misses the forest for the trees, complicating simple dishes BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR
T
HE DECOR AT Camper, an approximate abbreviation for California Menlo Park, nods to the idea of camping from the comfortable distance of an orderly suburban neighborhood. There’s a framed photograph of a VW van with its tent set up in the middle of a forest. Wooden oars, rescued from someone’s idea of summer camp, are stacked up and pinned against one clean white wall.
It’s an aesthetic that runs closer to glamping—a moneyed, idealized
version of camping that’s been repurposed here as classy kitsch. The threat of wild things, makeshift latrines and mosquitoes have all been carefully contained, erased or replaced by recessed lighting, smooth blondwood banquettes and accent walls painted a soothing tone of slate gray. With the exception of an appetizer and a dessert served in cast iron skillets, chef and owner Greg KuziaCarmel’s menu bears no relation thematically to fireside cooking in the great outdoors. It’s hard to find a unifying theme other than to describe the food broadly as California cuisine. Vibrant sauces drip and spread like watercolors across the plates. Along with dozens of other Bay Area
restaurants, Camper is competing for your attention with local, organic and sustainable ingredients. Combining those vegetables and meats into unique and memorable flavors, however, proved challenging. At the end of a recent Saturday night dinner there, the savory dishes all left behind a bitter aftertaste. The scales of salt and spice were consistently off balance. To start, the fried artichokes ($9) are as crispy as promised and miraculously degreased. But the hearts turned sour with the addition of fennel pollen and a side of purple mustard-yogurt. They were much better, nearly perfect, with just salt and pepper and a splash of fresh lemon. We also tried the cast-iron buttermilk cornbread ($8), which was cake-like. Not a single crumb of it was suffering from dryness. In this case too, it was much better plain without the accompanying smoked honey butter. Both condiments should have amped up the flavors, but instead worked against them. It felt as if the cooks were shying away from a more rustic approach because they didn’t trust the ingredients to stand on their own. Before the entrées reached the table,
we called our extremely kind and helpful server back to the table to order a salad ($12). As written, the menu describes it as “greens plus vegetables” with an avocado-green goddess dressing. But the vegetables were apparently still back at the farm and unharvested. There were sightings of both halves of a white radish, and the end of one lone green bean. It must have stowed away in the mess of lettuces in order to escape the frying pan or the steamer. There were five pastas to choose from and seven main courses. On paper, the pasta dishes all read like poetry. Because I’d never had it, a gramigna ($23) caught my eye. Had I known that one translation of the Italian word is an “infesting weed” I might have steered clear of it. Served with a few sad fava beans and peas, the pasta looks like a mound of beige ground chuck. The sauce itself was an unfortunate mix of thai basil, mint, ginger and chili. It tasted like gummy spaghetti swimming in a bowl of diluted sriracha. In a rare move, I sent it back to the kitchen. Without any fuss, the server immediately offered to replace it. I opted for the palak panisse ($22), a take on the Indian spinach and cheese dish palak paneer. Of these two vegan choices, the second was certainly heartier, stacked high with wilted spinach, but lacking the richness of butter and the tang of acid. I wouldn’t order it again. In retrospect, we should have ordered the cheeseburger ($20) or a roasted chicken ($30) instead of ending dinner with steamed cod ($36). It’s a beautiful, photogenic dish with complementing oranges, greens and whites. Yet together, the roasted carrots and green onions, the white fish and rice couldn’t counteract the bitter pine nut romesco. After that, we were eager to try something sweet for dessert. While oozing indulgently, the molten chocolate cake with vanilla bean gelato ($11) seemed like an act of overcompensation for what had come before. It was a scoop of gelato ($6), flavored with bay leaf and mildly floral, that tasted, albeit briefly, like the longed for and necessary palate cleanser.

LATE BLOOMERS Though BMX makes sense within the Cirque du Soleil universe, it’s strange to see it now.
Catching Air Cirque du Soleil taps extreme athletes in newest touring production, ‘Volta’ BY NICK VERONIN
F
OR THOSE WHO grew up in a world where the police regularly chased skateboarders out of public squares, Cirque du Soleil’s action sportsembracing Volta is a kind of bittersweet vindication. The mainstream acceptance of all forms of extreme athleticism is nothing new. Gleaming the Cube hit movie theaters in 1989. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater debuted on the Playstation in 1999. And in October, Apple released a commercial for its latest iPhone X model that featured a gaggle of free runners
cartwheeling down flights of stairs and vaulting over cars. Next summer, skateboarding is set to drop into the 2020 Olympic Games. But it still feels good to see an all-ages crowd collectively recognize the beauty and grace of a flatland BMX performance and to gasp in unison as cyclists launch their pedal-powered machines into the air, spinning the handlebars as they tumble skyward. The French-Canadian troupe’s newest big top tour is parked at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds through March 24. In addition to the extreme offerings, Volta features plenty of traditional circus acts. Indeed, one of
the best performances came from the clown, Mr. Wow. Played by Andrey Kislitsin, Mr. Wow appears in numerous routines, but shines most when he is on his own. In the second act, Kislitsin guides the audience through an entire day at the beach, miming interactions with a petulant child, his massive and protective father and a pesky beach ball. It is a joy to watch Kislitsin create an entire world on an empty stage, using little more than his own spastic facial expressions, detailed gesticulation and the word “wow.” It was both impressive and thought-provoking. One imagines that this kind of wordless storytelling predates human language. And yet, in a world so fully enveloped in the visual language of television, cinema and the internet— where emotions are often conveyed through close-ups of subtle facial expressions, meta allusions and dank memes—it was somehow comforting to see that vaudevillian physicality still has the power to draw big laughs. The show’s standout performance came in the form of Danila Bim, who held the audience in rapt attention
while performing a masterful hair hanging routine, swinging around the circular center stage while suspended from her taut ponytail. Bim, an aerialist, dancer and choreographer from Sao Paulo, Brazil, seems to defy the laws of physics and the limits of her own body in the performance, which takes the longpracticed art of hair hanging and adds elements of ballet and contortion. The result is mesmerizing. Over the course of her performance, Bim appears to fly, float and swim through the air, twisting her body like a pretzel and spinning about like a top. It is acts like these, which find interesting ways to reimagine the circus, that have set Cirque du Soleil apart over the years. The troupe’s lavish and avant garde costume design has also helped keep them a step ahead of the competition. Unfortunately, with Volta, the company seems to be suffering from a lack of new ideas. Though BMX and other forms of action sports certainly make sense in the Cirque du Soleil universe, it is odd that these elements would be brought onto the stage now. While Gen-Xers and older Millennials may remember a time when these activities felt alternative—even transgressive—they have long since been fully absorbed into the fold of corporate popular culture. Volta’s costume design and plot only serve to belabor this point. The main character Waz’s blue shock of wild bird hair recalls the kind of messy-on-purpose ’do that hasn’t been fashionable since sometime in the mid-2000s. And then there are Waz’s feelings of alienation, which is made painfully obvious when he is laughed off of Mr. Wow’s talent show at the start of Volta’s first act. From there Waz goes on a journey of self-discovery, ultimately coming to the conclusion that his quirks are a feature, not a bug. It’s a fine narrative for a John Hughes film, but feels heavy-handed and unnecessary under the big top—where the audience has come for high-flying entertainment, not a meditation on teen angst.

To date, the soprano singer has sold more than 35 million albums, and that figure doesn’t even include sales of 1987’s Phantom of the Opera soundtrack, which has sold somewhere north of 40 million CDs.
With more than 180 gold and platinum records earned to date, it’s fair to wonder where Brightman stores all of those awards. “My longterm producer has them all in his home,” she says. “I’m very proud of my achievements and I feel very lucky, but I live very much in the moment and the future. So I don’t really collect things like that.” Brightman has previously expressed dislike for a label sometimes applied to her music: classical crossover. Asked about it now, she backpedals just a bit. “It’s not that I have anything against it,” she says. “I think it was a marketing term. At that time,
the record companies had to find a place for pieces which they couldn’t necessarily put into the purest musical genre.” She notes that in years past, the classical crossover label was applied to film soundtracks, scores and hard-to-classify hybrid works by jazz artists. More recently it has come to represent artists such as her, Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. She laughs and says, “I don’t know really what [we’re supposed to be] crossing over from!” To be fair, Sarah Brightman started out her professional career as a dancer and disco singer. But from her earliest days growing up just north of London, she was immersed in all kinds of music. “Back in the ’60s in England, my mother always had the radio on. One minute you’d be listening to Tom Jones singing ‘What’s New, Pussycat?’ and the next it would be a piece by Rachmaninoff or something. So I got to be very eclectic in my taste in— and understanding of—many genres of music.” An avowed fan of rock acts like David Bowie and Pink Floyd,

SOPRANO SUPERSTAR Sarah Brightman is known to many for her appearance
Brightman can’t easily pinpoint the ways in which their music has informed her own approach. “I can’t be specific, because music comes from all different areas,” she says. “You receive it as an artist, and then you just decide to go forward with something. Something completely different that I wouldn’t expect—maybe jazz or blues or whatever—might inspire me to do something, but it doesn’t really end up like that at all. So whether it’s pop music or other genres, it doesn’t really matter. I get inspired by all areas.” While much of Brightman’s repertoire is sung in English, she has performed and recorded in French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin and Russian. “I prefer to do everything in my mother tongue,” she admits, but acknowledges that some lyrics don’t translate well. “The message doesn’t [always] come across with the text,” she explains. So in those cases, she sings in the original languages, even though she doesn’t speak many of them. “You have to do the research to find out what’s beneath the lyrics,” Brightman says. “The right texture in your voice doesn’t come out unless you really understand the meaning.” There’s an inspiring, sunny optimism to many of the songs on Hymn, Brightman’s 12th and most recent solo studio album. She admits that the record’s character is a mixture of both her own perspective and a desire to counter some of the unease and worry that’s part of modern life. And the response to Hymn and the current tour in support of it has been overwhelmingly favorable. “I wanted to work with lots of human beings onstage, so we’ve got a great choir, we’ve got a big orchestra, and we’ve got the band,” she says. “It has a really good feeling about it. “I don’t think I’ve had a response the same ever as I do with this particular concert and the songs that are in it,” Brightman says. “The very texture and feeling of the concert itself is to uplift people.”

JOEL KIM BOOSTER

DANCING WITH THE STARS:
Thu, 7:30pm, $50+ Center for the Performing Arts, San Jose ABC’s Dancing With the Stars has long been a ratings behemoth on the small screen. But it also draws big crowds to live productions at theaters around the country. This week the tour comes to San Jose, featuring many of the show’s most familiar faces (and, let’s be honest, bodies)—including Jenna Johnson, Brandon Armstrong, Witney Carson, Emma Slater and “Grocery Store Joe” Amabile to name just a few. The show trots out just about every imaginable style of dance, including modern, jazz, hip-hop and ballroom, with production values and stage pyrotechnics that are every bit as dazzling as the moves. (WB)
JOEL KIM BOOSTER MARIE AND Thu, 8pm, $17+ ROSETTA Rooster T. Feathers, Sunnyvale Korean and adopted, Joel Kim Booster grew up in an all-white, Southern, evangelical Christian family. Or as he puts it, “I fully knew I was gay before I knew I was Asian.” The LA comic has performed on the Late Show with James Corden and twice on Conan, and guested on shows like @Midnight. He’s also a writer for Billy on the Street, Big Mouth, and at least two other shows, so even if you haven’t seen him in person before, you’ve probably heard his jokes. Queer and fearless, Booster’s four night stand at Rooster runs through Sunday. (MH)

SILICON VALLEY AUTO SHOW
Thu, 8pm, $40+ Lucie Stern Theatre, Palo Alto
Fri-Sun, $12 McEnery Convention Center, San Jose
You’ve heard of Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis, but if you’re not a student of early rock & roll, you may not know much about Sister Rosetta Tharpe. A generation older than those landmark names, Tharpe was a critical influence on all of them, and to the development of the electric guitar. Playwright George Brant explores the life and music of this gospel and blues icon in this stage musical, which was developed at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s annual New Works Festival in 2015 and debuted off-Broadway in 2016. It makes its West Coast premiere in Palo Alto this week and runs through Mar. 31. (WB)
The catch phrase for this year’s Silicon Valley Auto Show is “The Future of Drive,” which alone is enough to get the hearts of Bay Area car fanatics revving at dangerously high RPMs. All the pulse-quickening name brands will be there—Bentley, Lamborghini, Maserati, Rolls Royce—along with the most dazzling examples of bleedingedge technologies including electric vehicles and alternative fuels. The best news? Test drives are available. Just be prepared for the letdown when you eventually have to drive home in your bucket of bolts. (WB)
BACK TO THE ’80S Fri, 9pm, Free Ozumo, Santana Row If you think about it, Santana Row is the perfect spot to relive the ’80s. The whole shopping center has the McMansion look of Tony Montana’s Miami hideout, replete with bull market prices and Reagan-era extravagances. But this Friday, tucked away in Ozumo’s lounge is a quieter, more entertaining take on the ’80s: a live “lounge-singer” style revue of the decade’s hits. Sip a fruity drink while Duran Duran, the Eurythmics, Modern English and plenty more get the easylistening treatment, because the ’80s are alive and well at Santana Row. (MH)

THE DEATH OF PRINT MEDIA Sat, 6pm, Free The Arsenal, San Jose First it was disco. Then it was rock & roll. Now it’s print. Or so they say. But according to the artists behind a new exhibit at The Arsenal, the rumors about the death of magazines and newspapers have been greatly exaggerated. “The Death of Print Media” will feature original collages by Tad Malone (a Metro contributor) and Dan Zumsteg. Together, the pair cobble together otherworldly landscapes from glossy publications, breathing new life into a medium many have relegated to the recycling bin. The show runs through March. (MS)

Dubstep began in England as a contemplative alternative to the more hard-edged styles of British club music, but by the time Skrillex came around, it was all car commercials, LA skylines and vodka tent pop-ups. Though they aren’t exactly Burial, Canadian DJs Adventure Club keep dubstep leaning back toward its early days, laying off the rubber-kneed wub-wubs until they simply can’t restrain themselves any longer. The duo mixes healthy doses of trance, chillwave and house music into its sound, creating neon-drenched androgynous dance anthems—with just enough wobble to get the floor shaking. (MH)
Those who are a part of this city’s nightlife scene know that San Jose is a lot like a small town. People watch out for each other. So when news of Robbie Matthews’ untimely death reached Rachel Warner of The Caravan, one of Matthews’ favourite watering holes, she knew what she had to do. Celebrating the life of Matthews’—known to his close friends as Pickles—this Saturday’s gathering will feature live music from Pablo Escobar, Beerijuana, The Biffs and more. The bar will also be holding a raffle and accepting donations to help Matthews’ family cover funeral costs. (MS)
Crafting high-quality beer starts with a flower. Most beer enthusiasts, however, will only experience the bitter punch of hops in a mug. But at the Hop ’N Vine Festival hop-heads will have the opportunity to get hands-on with whole cones at the event’s “Hop ’N Vine University.” Featuring locally produced brew and wine, plus lite bites, entertainment and an exhibition on the history of beer and wine production in the Santa Clara Valley, it’s an ideal way for connoisseurs of both grape and grain to spend an afternoon. FRI MAR 8 |NOON ARTS & LECTURES: ARLENE BIALA @ FIRST UNITARIAN Former fellow poet laureate Arlene Biala will share some of her poetry during the longrunning Noon Arts & Lectures series. Here’s your Friday itinerary: Get out of the office/cafe, pick up some lunch (maybe a perfect sandwich from Freshly Baked next door?), head to Third Street across from St. James Park and hunker in for some incredible words and feels from one of the valleys finest poets. Rinse, repeat. Hell, just go home after that. You won’t have it in you to go back to work. 12:10pm. 160 N Third St, San Jose
FRI MAR 8 | MAC MALL LIVE @ BACK BAR SOFA There are a number of Bay Area hip-hop veterans still hustling around this region. I am still a little surprised when I hear about any of them coming through San José. I don’t want to be surprised. I am learning to expect more hip-hop artists coming through here and not just the arenas and amphitheaters. Thank you, Mac Mall. The scene is small, but it is building. I am excited for the future of South Bay hip-hop. There are some great young voices coming up in this area. 8pm. 418 S Market St, San Jose
WED MAR 13 | NEW TALENT COMEDY COMPETITION: ROUND 4 Every year Roosters holds an amateur comedy competition. A dozen Wednesdays each spring you can see some of the best and a few of the worst stand-up comics the Bay Area has to offer. The South Bay represents more and more each year. It was hard to find a comedy night in and around San Jose 10 years ago. Now it’s hard to find a night without one. We’re becoming a comedy playground, and we all benefit from it. 8pm. Rooster T. Better Late ONE DAY IN 1999, Xavier Dphrepaulezz was driving through L.A. Next thing he knew, he was in a hospital bed. He’d been blindsided by another driver, his car had flipped over and three weeks had passed. His right hand was almost completely paralyzed. Half-atrophied, and held together by steel rods, he was lucky to be alive. Flash forward to 61st annual Grammy Awards, held just a few weeks ago in Los Angeles, where Please Don’t Be Dead won Best Contemporary Blues Album. The cover of that record is a photograph of Dphrepaulezz, just moments after awakening from his coma. These days, Dphrepaulezz goes by a different name: Fantastic Negrito, and Please Don’t be Dead is his second album to claim a Grammy. “I put out two full-length albums, and they Fantastic Negrito both won Grammys. That’s crazy,” Dphrepaulezz says. “I was thinking about it the other day. It was Mar 9, 8pm, $20+ a lot of years culminating in this moment.” The Ritz, San Jose Please Don’t be Dead is a powerhouse, the swaggering, theritzsanjose.com fully-embodied tale of a man who looked death in the face and found beauty on the other side. Its music is deeply human, a howling wake-up call for our increasingly digital age. “It’s raw and it’s not perfect, and I think we need that now,” he says. An Oakland resident since the age of 12, Fantastic Negrito burst onto the music scene in 2015, when he won a contest to perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk series. Out of almost 7,000 contestants, it was Fantastic Negrito’s passion and voice that captured the attention of the All Songs Considered staff. Before that, Dphrepaulezz had been mostly performing at the train station in San Francisco. “I was at the point where I just didn’t care anymore, and I thought I’d just play at the train station. That seemed like the most sincere and honest thing to do at the time. People getting off the train in San Francisco, you’ll never meet a group of people who don’t want to hear your songs more than these people,” he says, laughing. Though he’s come a long way from his busking days, at 51, Fantastic Negrito is still just getting started. “I love being a middle-age artist,” Dphrepaulezz says toward the end of our interview. “I hate to talk about what can’t be done. My grandmother used to tell me, ‘Work with what you got.’ I love that; that’s like my philosophy. I got this mangled hand, but I’m grateful that I got it.” —Mike Huguenor

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): Genius inventor Thomas
Edison rebelled against sleep, which he regarded as wasteful. He tried to limit his time in bed to four hours per night so he would have more time to work during his waking hours. Genius scientist Albert Einstein had a different approach. He preferred 10 hours of sleep per night, and liked to steal naps during the day, too. In my astrological opinion, Aries, you're in a phase when it makes more sense to imitate Einstein than Edison. Important learning and transformation are happening in your dreams. Give your nightly adventures maximum opportunity to work their magic on your behalf.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): The Danish flag has a red background emblazoned with an asymmetrical white cross. It was a national symbol of power as early as the 14th century, and may have first emerged during a critical military struggle that established the Danish empire in 1219. No other country in the world has a flag with such an ancient origin. But if Denmark's Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who's a Taurus, came to me and asked me for advice, I would urge him to break with custom and design a new flag—maybe something with a spiral rainbow or a psychedelic tree. I'll suggest an even more expansive idea to you, Taurus: Create fresh traditions in every area of your life. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): On June 7, 1988, Gemini
musician Bob Dylan launched what has come to be known as the Never Ending Tour. It's still going. In the past 30-plus years, he has performed almost 3,000 shows on every continent except Antarctica. In 2018 alone, at the age of 77, he did 84 gigs. He's living proof that not every Gemini is flaky and averse to commitment. Even if you yourself have flirted with flightiness in the past, I doubt you will do so in the next five weeks. On the contrary, I expect you'll be a paragon of persistence, doggedness, and stamina.
CANCER (June 21-July 22): The otters at a marine
park in Miura City, Japan are friendly to human visitors. There are holes in the glass walls of their enclosures through which they reach out to shake people's hands with their webbed paws. I think you need experiences akin to that in the coming weeks. Your mental and spiritual health will thrive to the degree that you seek closer contact with animals. It's a favorable time to nurture your instinctual intelligence and absorb influences from the natural world. For extra credit, tune in to and celebrate your own animal qualities.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Between 1977 and 1992, civil
war raged in Mozambique. Combatants planted thousands of land mines that have remained dangerous long after the conflict ended. In recent years, a new ally has emerged in the quest to address the problem: rats that are trained to find the hidden explosives so that human colleagues can defuse them. The expert sniffers don't weigh enough to detonate the mines, so they're ideal to play the role of saviors. I foresee a metaphorically comparable development in your future, Leo. You'll get help and support from a surprising or seemingly unlikely source.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Imagine a stairway that
leads nowhere; as you ascend, you realize that at the top is not a door or a hallway, but a wall. I suspect that lately you may have been dealing with a metaphorical version of an anomaly like this. But I also predict that in the coming weeks some magic will transpire that will change everything. It's like you'll find a button on the wall that when pushed opens a previously imperceptible door. Somehow, you'll gain entrance through an apparent obstruction.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Not all of the classic works of great literature are entertaining. According to one survey of editors, writers, and librarians, Goethe's Faust, Melville's Moby-Dick, and Cervantes' Don Quixote are among the most boring masterpieces ever written. But most experts agree that they're still valuable to read. In that spirit, and in accordance with astrological omens, I urge you to commune with other dull but meaningful things. Seek out low-key but rich offerings. Be aware that unexciting people and situations may offer clues and catalysts that you need. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Many of you Scorpios
By ROB BREZSNY week of March 6
regard secrecy as a skill worth cultivating. It serves your urge to gather and manage power. You're aware that information is a valuable commodity, so you guard it carefully and share it sparingly. This predilection sometimes makes you seem understated, even shy. Your hesitancy to express too much of your knowledge and feelings may influence people to underestimate the intensity that seethes within you. Having said all that, I'll now predict that you'll show the world who you are with more dazzle and flamboyance in the coming weeks. It'll be interesting to see how you do that as you also try to heed your rule that information is power.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Sagittarian actress
and producer Deborra-Lee Furness has been married to megastar actor Hugh Jackman for 23 years. Their wedding rings are inscribed with a motto that blends Sanskrit and English, "Om paramar to the mainamar." Hugh and Deborah-Lee say it means, "We dedicate our union to a greater source." In resonance with current astrological omens, I invite you to engage in a similar gesture with an important person in your life. Now is a marvelous time to deepen and sanctify your relationship by pledging yourselves to a higher purpose or beautiful collaboration or sublime mutual quest.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In 1997, a
supercomputer named Deep Blue won six chess matches against Chess Grand Master Gary Kasparov. In 2016, an Artificial Intelligence called AlphaGo squared off against human champion Lee Sodol in a best-of-five series of the Chinese board game Go. AlphaGo crushed Sodol, four games to one. But there is at least one cerebral game in which human intelligence still reigns supreme: the card game known as bridge. No AI has as yet beat the best bridge players. I bring this to your attention, Capricorn, because I am sure that in the coming weeks, no AI could outthink and out-strategize you as you navigate your way through life's tests and challenges. You'll be smarter than ever. P.S. I'm guessing your acumen will be extra soulful as well.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): At regular intervals,
a hot stream of boiling water shoots up out of the earth and into the sky in Wyoming's Yellowstone National Park. It's a geyser called Old Faithful. The steamy surge can reach a height of 185 feet and last for five minutes. When white settlers first discovered this natural phenomenon in the 19th century, some of them used it as a laundry. Between blasts, they'd place their dirty clothes in Old Faithful's aperture. When the scalding flare erupted, it provided all the necessary cleansing. I'd love to see you attempt a metaphorically similar feat, Aquarius: Harness a natural force for a practical purpose, or a primal power for an earthy task.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Who was the model for Leonardo da Vinci's iconic painting Mona Lisa? Many scholars think it was Italian noblewoman Lisa del Giocondo. Leonardo wanted her to feel comfortable during the long hours she sat for him, so he hired musicians to play for her and people with mellifluous voices to read her stories. He built a musical fountain for her to gaze upon and a white Persian cat to cuddle. If it were within my power, I would arrange something similar for you in the coming weeks. Why? Because I'd love to see you be calmed and soothed for a concentrated period of time; to feel perfectly at ease, at home in the world, surrounded by beautiful influences you love. In my opinion, you need and deserve such a break from the everyday frenzy. Homework: Think of the last person you cursed, if only with a hateful thought if not an actual spell. Now send them a free-hearted blessing. Go to REALASTROLOGY.COM to check out Rob Brezsny’s Expanded Weekly Audio Horoscopes and Daily Text Message Horoscopes.
