Surprise Party Hey, I get it. We all have our kinks. But the kinkiest kinksters are generally pretty well versed in the art of consent. I assumed you’d be, too, considering how you’re considered a mentor to many others in the bondage-role-playing scene you talk so much about. So it came as something of an unpleasant surprise when the solstice party you invited my sister and me to turned into something of a swinger’s ball. My sister and I consider ourselves pretty open-minded, but we both felt taken aback by the total lack of a heads up. We’re fine with your naked hot-tubbing and leather-clad pony play, or whatever, but we’d rather hear about later than see it in the flesh.

Great review of a great film on an issue I’ve been impacted by and worked on my whole life. Time to break the cycle!

The California prison incarceration cost of $136/ day seems low. No mention that the most recent study shows recidivism increased after realignment and reform. California’s average: 65 percent return to jail/prisons within three years of release.

Glad she saw the light eventually, but people seriously need to wake up and open their eyes before any kind of endorsement. But now she wants votes so .... I see.

LAURIE GARCIA VIA FACEBOOK

Last week’s news story “Locked Up,” on a new documentary about families of the incarcerated, misstated a statistic about California claiming 5 percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of all inmates. The correct statistic is that the United States claims about 5 percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of its prisoners. Metro regrets the error.

JENNY HIGGINS BRADANINI’s St. Patty’s Day housewarming potluck, which boasted a spread that included 24 pounds of homemade corned beef, doubled as the official launch of her campaign for San Jose’s D10 City Council seat. The timing was no coincidence, she says, but an homage to the Irish maiden name she’s legally reinstating after a divorce. “I’ll still run as Higgins Bradanini because that’s how everybody knows me,” she says. “But I thought this would be a great day to celebrate my family’s heritage and the campaign and to welcome people into my new home in Almaden.” Higgins Bradanini volunteered for national political campaigns for years before delving into the local arena in the wake of President DONALD TRUMP’s inauguration. Sportscaster ROBERT BRAUNSTEIN, who lost to Khamis in 2012, recently said he decided against another D10 run, which clears the way for MATT MAHAN, the 36-year-old CEO of civic activism social network Brigade Media, jogging buddy of Mayor SAM LICCARDO and entrepreneurial colleague of SEAN PARKER. Though Mahan hasn’t formally committed yet, his intention to run is the worstkept secret in town. Fly expects an announcement in April, once he winds down operations at Brigade. While Higgins Bradanini is the presumed labor favorite and Mahan has strong ties with business, they’re both progressive Dems who say they care about keeping San Jose affordable. In staking claim to the center-left, they may end up courting some of the same endorsements.

EVERYTHING’S FINED Sources say local court officials downplayed the scope and gravity of a software bug that charged either too much or too little for certain traffic violations.

CRASH COURTS Traffic ticket glitch is the latest in long line of missteps for Tyler Technologies BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH

A

STAR-STUDDED college bribery scandal and Gov. Gavin Newsom’s death penalty moratorium dominated headlines enough that news of a local traffic ticketing glitch registered barely a blip. In a March 12 bulletin, the Santa Clara County Superior Court announced a suspension of online payments after officials had “recently become aware” of an error that for the past three months charged too much or too little for certain fines. Until the matter resolves, the statement advised, people must pay in person at the traffic court on Homestead Road in Santa Clara. Court spokesman Benjamin Rada capped off the memo with an apology for the inconvenience and assurance that folks in charge “are actively working to remedy the situation.” Why it took so long to address the

malfunction is unclear, since officials seem just as intent on obscuring the scope of the problem. Not to mention its ties to scandal-plagued Tyler Technologies, whose Odyssey software replaced the local court’s legacy case management system last fall. Though Rada suggests the traffic fines bug came to light only recently, sources inside the courts say higher-ups knew about it for months without telling the public. And though he elides reference to Odyssey in his initial statement to the public, those same sources say the mischarging began as soon as court clerks began using the software in June 2018. That’s fully six months before Rada claims officials found out about the snafu and nearly nine months before he says they realized it screwed up more than 1,400 citations. “The clerks received very little training,” according to one court employee who spoke to Metro on condition of anonymity for fear of

reprisal. “Then there were these problems calculating crimes, pulling up defendants’ information and seeing the breakdowns of fines— basically a lot of things we could do in the old system.” More than being simply annoying to fix, Odyssey’s digital misfires took a human toll that began weighing on the conscience of multiple court employees—some of whom shared their concerns with Metro. Misdemeanor citations for driving without a license required a significant share of corrections, sources say. The moving violation primarily issued by the California Highway Patrol and disproportionately impacting undocumented immigrants should have rang up a combined $483, but sources say Odyssey invariably set the total to $650. “This is something that a lot of people just want to get it over with,” a veteran court staffer tells Metro. “A lot of people, if they don’t pay online or by mail, come in with cash and don’t even question it. They just want to pay and leave as soon as possible.” Initially, sources say, Deputy Court Manager Karen Jones advised her subordinates to update the error by hand, knocking the $167 off to bring it back to the correct bail amount. People who paid remotely basically just foot the extra cost, employees say. “I was upset,” a court employee recounts. “I felt like it was unfair. To me, it was another

Defender Brendon Woods urged the courts to drop Odyssey after three of his clients spent an extra 50 days in jail because orders for their release never showed up in the system. Rewind to 2013, however: California’s trial courts were desperate. Their central bureaucracy, the Administrative Office of the Courts, began seeking out private vendors after a publicly funded case management system meant to support all 58 counties crashed and burned in what Orange County Judge Andy Banks called a “$2 billion boondoggle.” Tyler Technologies emerged as one of the top few contenders—high price and trail of litigation notwithstanding—and Robert Oyung, the Santa Clara County court’s chief technology officer, who has since moved up to an equivalent statewide position at the Judicial Council, positioned himself as one of its champions. Oyung candidly told colleagues to expect growing pains, but some of the bugs turned out to be more challenging than expected. At a Judicial Council IT committee meeting in fall that same year, Oyung admitted the system was rife with malfunctions. “The main themes in terms of where people are having issues after going live with the product is challenges in working with minute orders, manual data entry, user navigation and some client errors,” the IT director reportedly told attendees. Clerks who use Odyssey in Santa Clara County courts say they’ve been grappling with some of those same setbacks. But their superiors have been slow to respond. Soon enough, noncourt officials with access to the software began sounding the alarm. Two months ago, police unions in San Jose and Sunnyvale blamed the company for endangering officers by failing to include up-to-date information about more than 2,500 bench warrants in Odyssey. Tyler threatened to take legal action against the San Jose Police Officers’ Association, and the courts echoed the company’s wholesale denial of any fault. Tyler Tech and Rada say the misclassified warrants owed to a data entry backlog, not a system error. Tom Saggau, who represents the San Jose POA, says news of Odyssey’s fee-ciphering flub vindicates the union’s prior criticism. “If this latest report about Odyssey being at fault is true, then an independent investigation is warranted to determine how many taxpayers have been ripped off, how they get reimbursed and what entity is responsible for this latest system failure,” Saggau says.

9 MARCH 20-26, 2019 | metrosiliconvalley.com | sanjose.com | metroactive.com

example of how the court wasn’t really rectifying the problems.” Court staffers say that continued until mid-December, when Jones allegedly directed clerks to just leave the amount as it appeared in Odyssey. Yet in the official narrative, that’s when the problem began. When asked why the court took another three months to tell the public about it, Rada replied in an email that it learned about the issue on Dec. 15 and only realized the extent of it— that it resulted in 1,400 miscalculated citations—by mid-February. If that’s the case, Metro pressed, then why wait another month still to issue the public notice? Rada has yet to respond. Tyler Technologies has been similarly evasive. In an email that a company official asked to be credited to “a Tyler spokesperson,” she acknowledged the court “has had an issue with the miscalculation of fines” and that Tyler Tech’s team is “working closely with the court to analyze the situation.” Her email ends with the company’s boilerplate boosterism about how it “successfully serves courts in more than 1,000 counties across 29 states” and values its “strong partnership” with the local court and its “shared spirit of service” for the community. As usual, Tyler Technologies sidestepped admissions of fault. But its record gives plenty cause for concern. The rapidly expanding corporation spent the past two decades acquiring more than 30 smaller firms to reach its stature as the largest provider of public sector software in the nation. It earned more than $147 million on total revenues of $935 million in 2018, according to company-released figures, nearly doubling its sales volume over the past four years. Managing systems that impact the lives of millions of people, Texasbased Tyler Tech’s fast growth has led to numerous public, damaging missteps. Lawsuits and news reports link the company to controversies in more than a dozen states ranging from false arrests and wrongful imprisonment to confusing tax hikes and scheduling mishaps at courts, school districts, cities, health districts and other public agencies. In Sacramento, firefighters sued Tyler and revoked its $2.1 million contract after accusing the company of putting first responders in danger by failing to update dispatch software as needed. In 2016, Alameda County Public

BEST IN SHOW Emilio Estevez portrayed a Cincinatti librarian in his latest project, The Public, which was featured in San Jose’s annual film fest.

ON THE MARGINS Broad range of Cinequest films give voice to the dispossessed BY GARY SINGH

T

HANKS TO CINEQUEST, the gritty underbellies of Cincinnati and Tucson took over downtown San Jose, in the forms of Emilio Estevez and Brian Jabas Smith, whose films depicted the margins of society without exploitation or judgment.

First of all, a trailer opened up every Cinequest film this year, with a wise man declaring that everyone who journeys through the festival will expect the unexpected. At least for me, this is already a prime

characteristic of Cinequest: The unexpected experience that emerges without any possible planning. Weird connections, either professional, artistic or just plain crazy always seem to occur. Serendipitous moments of synchronicity appear on both micro and macro levels, even in a stretch of less than 24 hours. To wit, Emilio Estevez of Repo Man infamy brought his latest project to the California Theatre, a film he directed and wrote, a masterpiece of social activism in which he played the lead role, a movie simply titled, The Public. It was one of the top five I’ve ever seen at Cinequest. We

witness a dead-on-accurate portrayal of what it’s like to work in a major city public library, in terms of the various struggling loiterers and street people who call the building home. The film takes place in the Cincinnati Public Library and Estevez plays one of the managing librarians, who is also a recovering alcoholic and former street person. Not only does his film succeed at depicting homelessness without being exploitative or judgmental, Estevez also nails what it’s like from the perspective of main branch librarians, who are far from being just “librarians.” They are actually social workers, first responders, job search counselors, research assistants, de facto therapists and any number of professions rolled into one. They are not “sitting around reading books all day,” as some barbarians tend to suggest. In the film, the homeless patrons of the library refuse to leave at closing time, and in protest, they demand the building be converted into a shelter due to the subzero weather outside, thus forcing a

stand-off between them and the police. Emilio’s character takes the side of the homeless, yet we also get Christian Slater as the insidious mayor exploiting the scenario to get votes, Gabrielle Union as a clueless TV newscaster sensationalizing the story, and Alec Baldwin as the aging musclehead detective trying to run the crisis negotiations. The film nails all of the issues: homelessness, mental health, the importance of libraries and librarians, fake politicians, fake newscasters, and the role that books play in making the world better. After watching parts of The Public for a second time, I segued down the street to the Martin Luther King Jr., Main Library, a building where, except for the overnight protest, San Jose’s equivalent of Emilio’s film unfolds on a daily basis. On the day in question, though, a Cinequest event with Tucson Weekly columnist Brian Jabas Smith took over a room on the second floor. Smith writes a column, “Tucson Salvage,” about the gritty underside of his hometown, columns he’s now compiled into a book of the same name. Via his writing, Smith explores and chronicles local stories of alienated people and places that society has simply forgotten— everyone from legless ex-cons to recovering junkies to mentally challenged boxers. Brian’s wife Maggie created a documentary short film based on his columns, which she screened at the event, but not before he read from a column titled, “Cops and Tweakers.” During the event, a few people sauntered over from the computer area of the library and said they were in some sort of homeless or closeto-homeless situation. All implied they never get to tell their stories to empathetic listeners. Each one said he or she identified with those in Smith’s film. A fantastic conversation then erupted, with some great back-and-forth taking place. Via this sequence of serendipitous moments, I could not have tuned in any better to the ignored, the forgotten and the unexpected. The two films filled me up with even more gratitude for what I still have in this crazed life. This is why longtime regulars keep returning to Cinequest. They know. It’s the poetic and random connections between people, places and events that make the experience worthwhile.

The Santa Cruz native—who grew up in the Olive Springs Road outlands of Soquel before moving to San Jose in his teens—had a major-label contract with his pop-punk band Wax by his early 20s. In the mid-’90s, he co-founded SideOneDummy Records, the indie label that launched the careers of bands as diverse as Flogging Molly, the Gaslight Anthem and Gogol Bordello. In 2009, he toured a one-man show called California Calling, based on his memories of the 1980s South Bay punk-skate scene that produced Steve Caballero, Corey O'Brien and many others. Not long after, he started touring as a stand-up comedian.

But for maybe his biggest break ever, he needed some help. From his dad. “The whole reason I’m on tour with Metallica is because of my dad,” Sib admits on a phone call from the road, where he's finishing up the last of 35 shows he will have done with the Bay Area metal legends by the end of the tour. The story—and with Sib, there is always a story—goes like this: his extremely OCD nature inspired a habit of calling around to the camps of various big-name comedians when the L.A.-based Sib saw they were coming to Southern California, to ask if they needed an opener. Usually, they did not, but he developed some good relationships over time. One of those paid off in a big way when the publicist for Jim

13 Not long after, Metallica officially asked Breuer to open their tour. And when drummer Lars Ulrich asked him if he wanted to take anyone along, he mentioned Sib. “So Lars immediately pops open the computer and says, ‘All right, let me check this out. Joe Sib… OK, SideOneDummy Records, fucking cool,’” says Sib, doing an eerily dead-on Ulrich impression. Luckily, whatever stand-up clip Ulrich saw, he liked. “Lars watches it, he laughs and goes, ‘All right, I’m down. This guy’s cool with me, talk to James.’ And Jim was like, ‘James will be down.’” Indeed, by July, everything was set for the September start of the tour. “Jim said, ‘Check it out, I spoke to the band, I spoke to everyone. You’re going,’” says Sib. “And I was like, ‘How does this even happen?’”

CHARGED UP BIGGEST FANS From left, comedian Jim Breuer, Joe Sib and James Hetfield of Metallica are all big fans of each others’ work. Breuer asked if he wanted to open a San Diego show for Breuer in 2017. He jumped at the chance, and gave his dad a call. “My dad is retired, he lives in San Diego, and I said, ‘Hey dad, I got a show tonight in San Diego. I’ll swing by, let’s go. It’s with this guy Jim Breuer who used to be on Saturday Night Live; you’re gonna dig him,’” Sib remembers. “So I bring my dad to the show, we’re cruising around, it’s this big theater. And my dad being my dad, when he meets Jim in Jim’s dressing room, they’re immediately talking baseball, and I’m pretty sure my dad made a sandwich out of Jim Breuer’s food. They’re just hanging, dude.” The show went well, and about a week later, Sib got a call from Breuer, asking if he wanted to open for him in Seattle. And then after that, Canada. That led to what Sib calls “a really great friendship,” and early last year, Breuer asked him to tour as his featured opening act. For Sib, it seemed like an important next step—a chance to hone his craft

with regular touring, opening for a big-name comic—but the weird thing was, he didn’t even think Breuer had watched his set that first night in San Diego. So what had inspired Breuer to give him the second shot that set him on this path? Yup, his dad. “That’s what started everything,” says Breuer. “He showed up with his dad. His dad walks in the room, and Joe’s like, ‘Dad, dad, don’t come in,’ and I said, ‘No, it’s all right, come on in. What do you want?’ ‘Well! I’ll have a banana!’ ‘OK, have a banana. You want some coffee?’ ‘Oh, I’d love coffee!’ And Joe’s like, ‘Dad, we’ve got our own room.’ I said, ‘No, he’s all right, it’s okay.’ I didn’t even watch Joe’s act. I couldn’t care less at that point. I just thought, ‘Wow, the guy brings his father. Of all the choices, he brings his father.’ He’s already ahead of the game for me. So I just listened to make sure they weren’t booing him or saying he was terrible. And he’s in. The dad got him in.” “I always tell my dad, ‘Jim was more stoked on you than me,’” says Sib.

Things got a lot crazier later in 2018, when Metallica vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield told Breuer the band wanted to try something radically different for the opening act of their upcoming tour. Specifically, they wanted Breuer—a famously big fan and friend of the band featured in the VH1 documentary When Metallica Ruled the World and the MTV Icon special dedicated to Metallica—to put together a sort of opening show to entertain crowds before they hit the stage every night. “I had a radio show where we did a game show with the band,” says Breuer. “That started, ‘Hey, you know that thing you did with us on the radio? Will you do that for our fans?’ Then they saw me a year or two ago at Rock on the Range, and I just remember James going, ‘God, man, you should be touring with us. Our fans would eat you up.’ And then out of nowhere about a year ago, he texts, ‘Hey we’re thinking about doing something for the fans. We’re not sure what.’”

One person who is not surprised at all that this happened is Santa Cruz comedian DNA, who first met Sib six years ago at a comedy show where they both performed. “He told me he was opening for Metallica with Jim Breuer, and I was like, ‘Of course you are,’” says DNA. He’s been impressed not only with Sib’s material, but also his presence on stage. “He’s got this infectious energy,” says DNA. “You just feel yourself getting charged up when you’re around Joe Sib.” That, combined with Sib’s roots in the area, is why DNA chose him to be the inaugural headliner at the opening of DNA’s Comedy Lab and Experimental Theatre in Santa Cruz on Friday, March 22. The night before, Sib will return to his skate-punk stomping ground in San Jose for a performance at the Ritz—which is of course owned by Corey O’Brien, one of the most prominent skaters to come out of the San Jose scene in the ’80s. Sib’s connection to O’Brien goes way back. “I met him at Winchester Skateboard Park when I was like 12 years old, and I was totally afraid of him because he was just one of these kids who knew everyone, he was a rippin’ skateboarder—he has that thing. The same thing a person in a band might

15 a rock club was a little confusing to the audience. But now, 10 years have passed, and comedy is bigger than ever,” says Sib. “Every comic from Brian Posehn to Kyle Kinane to Jim Breuer—a lot of these guys are doing rock clubs, and people understand it now. They’re like, ‘Cool, I get it.’”

LIGHT ME ON FIRE Audiences, however, did not necessarily get what Sib and Breuer were doing on this tour with Metallica right away. There was really no way for him and Breuer to practice what they had planned for the shows, and the first gig didn’t go too well. “After the first night in Madison, Wisconsin, there were people straight-up telling me on Instagram, ‘If you ever come back to Madison, I will light you on fire,’” he says. “People were not stoked.” But the next morning, he was at Breuer’s room at 7 a.m. with a bunch of new ideas. “Honestly, he could have been like, ‘No offense, but they hired me,’” says Sib. “Instead, he just starts laughing and was like, ‘Let’s do this. Let’s build this thing together.’ He was so open to ideas, and he came with so many ideas. We sat down and took our pieces of paper out, and wrote down the things that worked and wrote down the things we didn’t want to do, and there was just no ego involved. It was such a collaboration. That’s when I knew we were going to be friends for life.” The duo managed to turn things completely around by the next show, and that’s when they figured out what has become their template. It’s certainly not like any opening act Metallica—or anybody else—has ever seen. And they’re playing to much larger crowds than they expected. “Lars told us, ‘Do whatever you guys want to do, but don’t be bummed, because there will probably only be five people in the arena when you’re there.’ So I was like, ‘OK, that’s not a lot of pressure.’ But I go on at 7, and Jim comes on at 7:30, and every night when I come on it’s already half full, and by the time Jim hits the

stage, it’s at capacity,” says Sib. “The show that we do is literally a twohour show. It reminds me of being a kid when I was living in San Jose, and my dad would go away for the weekend, and I would throw a rager at my house. You get a keg, you’re playing music, and after you get done playing music, a band would play. Except in this case, it’s Metallica.” Sib opens by going out with a laptop and pumping up the crowd, telling them he’s going to be their DJ, and inviting them to make requests as his Instagram pops up on the screen behind him. Generally it’s a barrage

Joe Sib has always felt Corey O’Brien has been at the vanguard of bringing music to San Jose of Slayer, Anthrax, Motorhead, etc., and Sib plays the metal hits until it’s time to introduce Breuer. “I say, ‘Here’s your host, your emcee and die-hard Metallica fan, Jim Breuer.’ Jim drops into a combination of storytelling-slash-crowdwork-slashemcee-slash-Metallica-fan for like 40 minutes. He’s telling stories about when he met Ozzy Osbourne. He’s telling stories about when he went to James’ house for the first time for dinner with his wife, and his wife tells James that her favorite band she ever saw was Bon Jovi. Like that. Good stories, and he’s also interacting with the crowd.” After that, it’s a mix of music and crowd work, but Sib does have a special bit he does toward the end of their show. “I tell a story about seeing the … And Justice For All tour at the Cow Palace, and how I had to sit up in

the nosebleeds, and I was bummed because I saw everyone on the floor. I told that story to Lars, and he said, ‘Well, why don’t you go up there and bring some people down, then? You can do whatever you want.’ So every night I go to some section and bring down like 10 people onto the floor,” he says. “And dude, people get emotional.” As the tour nears an end, Sib can’t believe the response they’ve gotten. “You can genuinely feel the energy from the audience,” he says. “Metallica’s smart, they’re friends with Jim, they knew Jim would bring the right show. He didn’t have to bring me, but he did, and I’m so proud of the show we put on. It’s been such a game-changer for me.” “Joe is a huge motivator,” says Breuer of why he chose Sib. “He’s funny. If I bring up a premise or joke, he knows how to help me elaborate on it, and I do the same with him. He just had a great energy, and it was a perfect storm when Lars asked me, ‘Is there someone you want to bring along?’ I went, ‘Well, Joe’s a big music guy, we need a DJ. I think I got a guy.’” Breuer says he was never nervous about how the tour would go, but he’s enjoyed learning what works and what doesn’t, gradually perfecting it. “No one’s done this,” he says. “I think we definitely pulled it off. I think the fans really liked it for the most part. The band loves it. It’s been nothing but an extremely positive experience. If we do it again, I’ll be ready to make it even bigger and better.” Hell, even that first night of the tour isn’t looking so bad, in retrospect. “Jim Breuer and I hold the record for the longest opening act on stage ever for Metallica,” says Sib. “That night in Madison, we were on stage for two hours and 40 minutes. And we survived, dude. Two guys, two microphones, one laptop, and we survived.” THURSDAY

have,” says Sib. “Even when he was a kid, the way he carried himself, you were like, ‘Who’s that guy?’ Sib even remembers the first O’Brien-produced show he went to see, in the ’80s. “He was living with his grandma and his brother over in Santa Clara, and I remember starting to hang out with him as I got into high school. And I remember that Corey and Gavin, his brother, were putting on a show at the Vet’s Hall on Father’s Day. It was Social Distortion,” says Sib. “I remember thinking, ‘Wait a minute, they figured out a way to get Social Distortion to come to San Jose?’ Social Distortion was a huge band for San Jose at that point. That band was so important to us. And I remember getting dropped off by my dad on Father’s Day to go to this show. In my mind it was like, ‘How did he even do this?’” There are a few reasons Sib is happy to be headlining at the Ritz. First, he’s always felt O’Brien has been at the vanguard of bringing music to San Jose, from punk to industrial to whatever the newest sound was at the time. Everyone in the scene kind of looked up to O’Brien, Sib remembers. “He had the look of Brad Pitt, but the fuckin’ stare, the attitude, of Robert DeNiro all wrapped into one, and then throw in a Social Distortion record, mixed with the whole Wax Trax catalog. And throw in Rick Rubin, for the ears, and just being able to know what’s gonna happen in music,” says Sib. “That’s Corey O’Brien, man.” Then he pauses. “When you write this, don’t make it, ‘Dude, I think Joe Sib was in love with Corey,’” he warns. Then, he pauses again. “Fuck it, I am in love with Corey.” But he also has a link to the building itself, via his former band Wax. “Basically, I left L.A. and came back with this new band, and that was the first room we ever headlined, when it was F/X,” he says. “There’s definitely a history there with that room, and now that Corey owns it … there’s just a good vibe.” He loves comedy clubs, but this time a rock club just felt right. “When I started doing stand-up, doing it in

WE NOODLIN The veggie pho at Pho 24 delivers with a sizeable portion, but sriracha, hoisin and lime were necessary to punch up the flavor.

Numbers Game Pho 24 wasn’t astounding, but its sprawling menu hints at promise BY AVI SALEM

W

E SOUTH BAY denizens are no strangers to pho. Home to the second largest Vietnamese population outside of the motherland, Santa Clara County is brimming with restaurants serving up brothy, beefy noodle bowls. Southeast Asian flavors have an outsized influence on the growing San Jose culinary scene. Vietnamese newcomer Pho 24, located a stone’s throw from Oakridge Mall, is one of the latest contenders in this arena. I recently spent a cold and drizzly Saturday schlepping around Oakridge, and I was drawn to the soul-soothing

promise of a hot, tangy bowl of pho. I headed to Pho 24—opened in December 2018—to find a neatly decorated space. I was greeted by an impressive and welcoming arrangement of orchids and floral bouquets alongside the eatery’s front desk. We were seated promptly and given menus with the usual extensive array of appetizers, rice plates, vermicelli bowls and, of course, noodle soups. We started simple, with an order of vegetarian and pork and shrimp spring rolls ($6 each). Served alongside a flavorful and rich peanut sauce, both were made to order and stuffed with the usual suspects: lettuce, veggies, mint leaves and vermicelli noodles. While the pork and shrimp rolls were

stuffed full with meat, the vegetarian rolls felt a little sparse as they didn’t come with tofu or another type of veggie-friendly protein. Nonetheless, they were tasty and fresh. Alongside the spring rolls, we also ordered sizzling crepes, or bánh xèo ($11)—a must-eat appetizer at any Vietnamese restaurant. Made with rice flour, coconut milk and a touch of turmeric powder, these thinly fried pancakes are stuffed with bean sprouts and shrimp and served next to fresh herbs, crunchy lettuce leaves, a heaping helping of julienned carrots and slices of radish. While the portion size was huge and the pancake did come out piping hot, the bland flavor and somewhat chewy texture of the pancake was disappointing. The dipping sauce, which was far too fishy and not tangy enough for my palate, was also a letdown. We were barely a few bites into our sizzling pancake when our main course appeared: a rice plate of grilled jumbo prawns and onion beef served with crispy egg rolls and a side salad ($13.25), and a bowl of vegetarian pho ($10.75) loaded with fresh vegetables and tofu. While most would argue that no pho

experience is complete without trying the most popular and classic round steak pho, I feel that a restaurant that can find space on their menu for a rich and flavorful vegetable-based soup is far more rare and just as appetizing. (Full disclosure: I also don’t eat beef.) The portion size for a small soup was substantial, as was the amount of noodles, vegetables and tofu that were all neatly displayed in the bowl. Topped with carrots, cabbage, broccoli, onion slices and tons of chopped cilantro and scallions, I was appreciative of the variety of vegetables used for the broth. Despite that, the broth was somewhat bland. Adding hoisin sauce, sriracha and fresh squeezed lime helped significantly. The rice plate, on the other hand, was sparse and underwhelming. For starters, it only included one shrimp, three small strips of beef and one eggroll—far too little for a full-price main entree. Instead, the plate was mostly made up of salad with cucumbers and tomato, and a large scoop of steamed rice. While the one solitary shrimp was grilled and seasoned well, the beef strips were coated in a sticky and saccharine glaze, which, according to my companion, became overwhelming quite quickly despite the small portion size. The eggroll was, well, an eggroll—cooked and flavored well, but not enough to make up for the rest of the entree. It’s worth mentioning that Pho 24 also boasts a huge menu of traditional Vietnamese coffees, smoothies and boba milk teas that are made to order. With all the classic add-ons, from fruit jellies to egg pudding and pearls, restaurant-goers can customize drinks to their liking. I opted for a classic Vietnamese iced coffee ($4.25) and a less traditional (but apparently just as popular) Thai iced tea boba drink ($4). Both were delicious, refreshing and came in to-go cups, making for the perfectly sweet ending to a meal that had a few bumps along the way. While everything about Pho 24 wasn’t perfect, one hopes that with time, the restaurant will come into its own and solidify its vast menu.

It’s practically a universal truth: working out sucks. Well… most of the time. If you’re running on a treadmill or pumping iron next to sweaty strangers, of course exercise is going to feel more like a chore than recreation. Then there’s climbing. The Studio Climbing gym gives members a place to socialize, work in teams or alone, and solve fun challenges (it takes time figuring out how to get up that wall). Amateurs, aspiring pros and those just beginning to dabble in the sport are all welcome to come check it out and learn more at this open ropes competition. (MS)

Hailed by the New York Times as the "greatest living interpreter of Groucho Marx’s material,” Frank Ferrante portrays the young Groucho of stage and film, while reacquainting the audience with brothers Harpo and Chico as well as the much-maligned Zeppo and the rarely seen Gummo. Ferrante also invokes his peers Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Greta Garbo and Margaret Dumont, who was Groucho’s comic foil in many movies. In addition to Groucho’s comic timing, Ferrante also has his song-and-dance patter down; the show features songs like “Hooray for Captain Spaulding” and “Lydia, the Tattooed Lady.” Audiences should come prepared for some “You Bet Your Life”-style interaction. There’s a lot of ’80s nostalgia out there these days, but Com Truise is less nostalgia and more like a person still physically living within the ’80s. The L.A.-based electronic musician is famous for his use of vintage synths and drum machines, patching together atmospheric dance tracks with the equipment of the time. If you ever wanted to be in a club scene in a John Carpenter movie, this is the closest you’ll get. He makes the kind of music you’d expect to hear in the workout class of a cyborg spin class heldo on a massive star ship orbiting some distant star. (MS)

Known by his last name—the Hawaiian word for righteous— Kapono has been a musical representative for his home state since the ’60s. GOSPEL TRUTH Marie Knight (Marissa Rudd, right) auditions for gospel legend Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Michelle E. Jordan) in the new TheatreWorks production of ‘Marie and Rosetta.’

Get Rhythm TheatreWorks’ ‘Marie and Rosetta’ tells of overlooked influential blueswoman BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR

T

HE SEQUINS ON Rosetta’s purple dress sparkled more intensely every time the actress playing her began to sing. That may have been a trick of the light, but Michelle E. Jordan inhabited the character with verve the minute she opened her eyes.

In the opening scene of Marie and Rosetta, Marie Knight (Marissa Rudd) is applying rouge to Rosetta’s cheeks. They’re in a funeral parlor getting ready to rehearse their first performance together. The two women will also be staying there for

the night, coffins and all, because they’re on tour in the South, where white hotel owners won’t allow African American guests. Rosetta has just hired Marie after hearing her perform backing vocals for her contemporary, Mahalia Jackson. Set in 1946 when Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915–1973) was already established as a gospel and R&B artist, the play recounts the beginning of her partnership with Marie. Like Jewelle Gomez’s play, Leaving the Blues, about jazz singer Alberta Hunter, Marie and Rosetta also reminds audiences of two commanding voices they might have neglected, never heard of or

overlooked. Playwright George Brant creates a conflict between the two women, but instead of truly dramatizing it, they work their differences out in song. And that’s just fine, because both Jordan and Rudd have voices that the angels, and even the devil, would covet. Rosetta started out as a gospel singer, but when she found mainstream success with raunchy, secular songs like “Tall Skinny Papa” and “Four Five Times” the more devout part of her audience turned to Mahalia, her rival in the gospel market. When Rosetta asks Marie whose records she prefers, Marie says she’s divided. Her mother listens to Mahalia, but her father prefers Rosetta. As they rehearse, that musical divide between the secular and the spiritual is bridged by how moving the songs are for a soul in need of salvation. When Jordan and Rudd harmonize, atheists and agnostics should find their musical evangelism convincing and hard to resist. Brant brings biographical details in smoothly—you can see the outline for a biopic like Ray

(2004) in the making—weaving their backgrounds into the script as the actors segue into the song list. Rosetta starts with “This Train” and Marie follows with “Were You There.” Neither singer is imitating the original vocalist, but that introduction indicates how their styles are meaningfully contrasted. Jordan’s voice is lower, and she adds grit to her inflections. Rudd purifies every note, so that each syllable sounds like the embodiment of innocence. Rosetta’s not having it. She stands behind Marie and starts moving her hips so that they sway back and forth. Rosetta explains that despite bringing her sexuality into the music, she’s still all right with God. The audience comes to hear her for the spiritual and the sensual uplift combined. Rosetta and Marie have husbands, but the play casually implies that their relationship might have been sexual, too. Rosetta compliments Marie on her beauty several times. Marie isn’t offended by the flirtation, but she doesn’t reciprocate. Brant asks the question on stage but leaves it open and unanswered. When they sing “Didn’t It Rain” and “Strange Things Happening Every Day” together, they achieve a fusion that feels real, carnal and sacred. Rosetta is also portrayed as a generous mentor. She tells Marie that, unlike working for Mahalia, she hasn’t been hired to be her backup singer. They’re sharing the stage. And she willingly admits that the younger singer is the better piano player. Rosetta was also a rock & roll pioneer in that she played the electric guitar. Jordan breaks a yellow guitar out of its case and we hear her influence in the music of Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix. Despite the success that Sister Rosetta Tharpe achieved, she was largely forgotten at the time of her death. Marie and Rosetta tells us that she was ahead of her time. Jordan and Rudd make sure we won’t forget either woman any time soon. THRU MAR

The Insurgents Humanity fights back against a fascist alien regime in ‘Captive State’ BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

A

FTER THE END of the world, the lights are still bright in Chicago’s Loop; there’s a veneer of normalcy, as long as you’re in the right class and stay in the right places. The top-notch, poorly titled Captive State by Rupert Wyatt of Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the first feature film to acutely deliver the mood of fear in the Trump era. This is what a real resistance would be like.

After a shock and awe alien invasion, the world’s governments capitulated

and instituted a collaborationist regime. Nine years later, the aliens— rebranded as “The Legislators”—run things, strip-mining the earth, drilling, baby, drilling, and sending obstinate humans to some off-world slave labor colony. The sun is wreathed in smog. The new lords reward their Quislings. As that cherished Simpsons joke has it, there are plenty of journalists ready to welcome our new insect overlords. Really white pop is the permitted radio music, approximately what you’d hear on the radio in Saskatoon in 1966. Down in their bunkers, the aliens must be smart enough to sense restlessness, because they’re permitting a “Peace, Unity and Harmony” rally

at Soldier Field. It’s a magnet for a revolutionary action. The script by Wyatt and his wife Erica Beeney doesn’t center around the usual young adult-lit style hero, with one brave warrior giving hope. Rather, the rebels are odd types: nurses, teachers, whores and street criminals, prepared not be taken alive. The aliens monitor all broadband, so the resistance uses analog technology: reel to reel tapes, carrier pigeons, typewriters, and secret messages hidden in cigarette papers. We’re lured into the story through a we-arethe-dead set of lovers, like Winston and Julia in 1984. In the nighttown slums of Pilsner, a Chicago suburb, sex worker “Jane Doe” (Vera Farmiga) has luxuries, a record player and a vase of fresh cut flowers. Her trick is the secret policeman William Mulligan (John Goodman). Wyatt cuts from this sadness into brutally shot urban guerrilla action. On the graffitied walls are memorials to Rafe (Jonathan Majors), seemingly killed in an insurrection in Wicker Park, which was flattened by reprisal

LIFE DURING WARTIME In ‘Captive State’ secret police and rebels match wits.

bombings. His surviving little brother, Gabriel (Ashton Sanders, of Moonlight), has a forced-labor job as a deleter of sim cards. He’s pulled into the rebellion. We can see how they live in this occupied city when Mulligan offers Gabriel a bribe to make him talk, and the bribe is a very small chunk of naan bread. Captive State isn’t perfect. There’s an inelegant info dump by teletype in the opening, which reads like an arcade game telling you what you’re going to be shooting at. The whippy, smallcamera technique can leave you puzzled; a couple of escapes are exciting in the set-up but then vague in the finale. The $25 million budget doesn’t permit a new kind of alien. They’re standard buggos: a gorilla-size crownof-thorns starfish in close up, but crouching form as seen from 100 paces, they earn their popular nickname, “roaches.” We never see their throne room, but we learn that visiting humans need to be enveloped in germicide because they can’t stand our smell. The “Legislators” stand on protocol—“Let them talk first,” urges a translator, trying to get a vice mayor ready for the meeting. The rally the humans stage for their honor is as fearful as you’d imagine, a thundering marching band circling a female figure posing in gaping awe, staring at the skies in gratitude. Films like these are usually populist, with the dictator villains drawn from some safe-for-all combination of the fearful excesses of left and right. But it’s tough to read Captive State as anything but a film on the side of the insurgents, a thriller of colonists and colonizers. Despite the analogies to the Nazi occupation, this is not an exercise in neo-noir. That said, Farmiga, a delicate and deeply apt tragic actor, and the magnificent old bull Goodman, with his eloquent grunts of displeasure, make them a pair of emissaries from a denser, richer and more soulful age of movies. Captive State provides a hopeful end without simple mindedness. While he doesn’t spell it out, you can read a lot of the fate of fascists into Goodman’s line, “Didn’t you pay attention in history class, Gabriel?”

STORYTELLER Up and coming young country artist Adam Hambrick plays City National Civic

Simple Truth Adam Hambrick tackles human condition with straight talk, country twang BY NICK VERONIN

P

OP MUSIC GETS a bad rap—popular country worst of all.

It is derided as a lesser art form—not heady enough for the classical and jazz crowds; not gritty or pure enough for devotees of rock & roll, hip-hop and “real” country. It is manufactured, overly processed, formulaic. It is simple. But these critiques miss the point. There is something truly and sublimely beautiful in the simplicity of a perfectly executed pop country track. Consider “Rockin’ All Night Long,” the debut single from young country newcomer Adam Hambrick. You’d be forgiven for dismissing it as little

more than a slapdash collection of tired country tropes. First, there’s the song’s well-worn title, there’s the American car product placement, there’s romanticising of excessive alcohol consumption. And then there’s it’s very first line: “There were Chevys and levies, whiskey and rye.” But then, after all that, Hambrick proves that this is no hack regurgitation, taking the listener on an archetypal American journey—from the foolish exploits of youth, through the whirlwind of romance, finding true love and marriage, and then on to the joys and struggles of parenthood. The greatest pop songs draw their strength from strong arrangements, powerful lyrics and common cultural

touchstones. “Rockin’ All Night Long” has all of this. After breezing through a twomeasure instrumental intro, Hambrick dives into the iconic country imagery of classic cars and strong drink. But his “American Pie” is no cheap trick. Rather, it is a guidepost. “Gas was cheap and the radio was free,” he continues, conjuring images of aimless summer nights. Reverberant slide guitar, percussive and delayed electric picking and a subtle bass line carry the song through its first verse and chorus without any drums. At just shy of the minute mark the beat comes in to carry the listener through a tale of falling head-over-heels in love. “There’s a knowing you know kind of feeling you get,” Hambrick begins the second verse, winding his way to the song’s refrain a second time. Then everything is stripped away, except a sparse acoustic guitar and Hambrick’s earnest twang. It is through this lullaby of a bridge that we come to find Hambrick in the present. Looking back on his wild years and recalling his and his wife’s honeymoon phase. Here he finds himself in a very different place.

“Now it’s 2am and I’m in a rocking chair in a room with pink everywhere,” he sings softly. “She’s got her mama’s smile and lungs like her dad. And she’s the best reason I ever had…” And this is where the chorus—first sung as a wild-eyed youth and later as a starry-eyed lover—takes on its third meaning: “Bloodshot eyes, watch the sun rise, sleep when you die, phase of life. It’s a full heart, falling hard, singing songs to her in the dark. And drinking up every moment ’til it’s gone. Rockin’ all night long.” Hambrick, who reaches me by phone from Nashville, is preparing to pick up the very daughter he fawns over in his new single. “You kind of run out of songs to sing when you’re rocking a baby to sleep in the middle of the night,” he says, explaining how he hit upon the idea of juxtaposing the “beer-andtailgates, goofy country lyric” with grown-up imagery. “In that moment, ‘rocking all night long’ meant something different than it did when I was in my 20s,” he says. “I was amused by that thought.” Still, it took some time for the song to be fully fleshed out. At the time, the Arkansas-born, Mississippi-raised Hambrick had already made some inroads in Nashville. He’d written a few well-known songs, including “Old Habits,” which was recorded by Justin Moore and Miranda Lambert. And after spending some time in a writing room, working on songs for other country artists, he struck out on his own, tapping industry friends to help him bring “Rockin’ All Night Long” to life. But even then, it took a while to figure out how to bridge the latenight revelry with his late-night daddy duties. Finally, he landed on a verse that is largely open to interpretation. What causes the bloodshot eyes and all-nighters of his torrid romance? The answer is probably different for all of his fans. And he likes it that way. “It is good for people to have clear visions of what a song is,” he says. “But I think it is an anchor point, not a boundary.”

THU MAR 21 | DRINK AND DRAW WITH LADY LEX & SUNSET SLIM The kind and creative Carlos Velazquez hosts Drink & Draw, a free monthly event where folks are welcome to imbibe and scribe. (Scribble & dribble?) He will be joined by guest DJs from Oakland, Lady Lex and Sunset Slim, playing ska,’60s soul, garage and more. This is a very good way to get to know an artistic community while getting your groove on. Thursday, 7pm, at Art Boutiki. 44 Race St, San Jose

FRI MAR 22 | IN THE WORKS: BARUCH PORRAS HERNANDEZ @ MACLA Writer and master of ceremonies extraordinaire Baruch Porras Hernandez hosts this sneak peek of new works in development by Terry Blas, Karina Cervantes, Luna Merbruja, Cristal Olivas, Vanessa Sanchez, Roberto Santiago, Valleygrrls and Young Tsukune. That’s a fantastic list of some grand art makers for you to peruse and connect with live. 8pm. 510 S First St, San Jose

SAT MAR 23 | TILL I FALL ALBUM RELEASE @ ART BOUTIKI MUSIC HALL Santa Clara Valley, you are doing a really good job of producing very skilled bands of nearly all styles. And for that, alt-pop-rock is getting its turn once again! Till I Fall makes me long for some of those fun-but-lonely-bastard sounds of 2002. Their jams also make me want to unchubby myself in order to dance better so that I may, perhaps, rock the frack out with these mofos on Friday. Art Boutiki: Keeping it geeky and freaky since 1906… or somethin’ or other. With Stickup Kid, Hey Thanks! 7:30pm. 44 Race St, San Jose

SAT MAR 23 | J. STALIN OF LIVEWIRE RECORDS @ BACK BAR SOFA J. Stalin’s style and production quality feel like Too Short produced by Kendrick Lamar. But it’s all Oakland, very much an East Bay export. But, thankfully, you can count on a J. Stalin show at Back Bar a couple of times a year. One of the growing regulars to bring more hiphop to San Jose. 8pm. 418 S Market St, San Jose = MUST SEE

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): During the coming

weeks, everything that needs to happen will indeed happen only if you surprise yourself on a regular basis. So I hope you will place yourself in unpredictable situations where you won't be able to rely on well-rehearsed responses. I trust that you will regard innocence and curiosity and spontaneity as your superpowers. Your willingness to change your mind won't be a mark of weakness but rather a sign of strength.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In the animated kids' film Over the Hedge, 10 talking animals come upon a massive, towering hedge they've never seen. The friendly group consists of a skunk, red squirrel, box turtle, two opossums and five porcupines. The hedge perplexes and mystifies them. It makes them nervous. There's nothing comparable to it in their previous experience. One of the porcupines says she would be less afraid of it if she just knew what it was called, whereupon the red squirrel suggests that from now on they refer to it as "Steve." After that, they all feel better. I recommend that you borrow their strategy in the coming weeks. If a Big Unknown arrives in your vicinity, dub it "Steve" or "Betty." GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I urge you to locate a metaphorical or very literal door that will give you access to a place that affords you more freedom and healing and support. Maybe you already know about the existence of this door—or maybe it's not yet on your radar. Here's advice from Clarissa Pinkola Éstes that might help. "If you have a deep scar, that is a door," she writes. "If you have an old, old story, that is a door. If you love the sky and the water so much that you almost cannot bear it, that is a door. If you yearn for a deeper life, a full life, a sane life, that is a door." CANCER (June 21-July 22): Musician Carole Kaye is

the most famous bass guitarist you've never heard of. Over the course of five decades, she has plied her soulful talents on more than 10,000 recordings, including gems by Frank Zappa, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Beach Boys. Twenty-seven-time Grammy winner Quincy Jones has testified that Kaye has written "some of the most beautiful themes I've ever heard in my life" and that she "could do anything and leave men in the dust." I trust this horoscope will expand the number of people who appreciate her. I also hope you'll be inspired to become more active in spreading the word about the gifts that you have to offer the world. It's high time to make sure that people know more of the beautiful truth about you.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): "When you want happiness,

what are you wanting?" asks aphorist Olivia Dresher. The repeat of an event that made you feel good in the past? A sweet adventure you've thought about but never actually experienced? Here's a third possibility. Maybe happiness is a state you could feel no matter what your circumstances are; maybe you could learn how to relax into life exactly as it is and feel glad about your destiny wherever it takes you. In my opinion, Leo, that third approach to happiness will be especially natural for you to foster in the coming weeks.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): There are old traditions

in many cultures that pay special attention to the first brick or stone that is laid in the earth to initiate the construction of a future building. It's called a cornerstone or foundation stone. All further work to create the new structure refers back to this original building block, and depends on it. I'm pleased to inform you that now is a favorable phase to put your own metaphorical cornerstone in place, Virgo. You're ready to begin erecting a structure or system that will serve you for years to come. Be sure you select the right place for it, as well as the best building materials.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Born under the sign of Libra, Ivan Kharchenko (1918–1989) was a military officer and engineer for the Soviet army. His specialty was disarming explosive devices before they detonated. Over the course of his career, he defused an estimated 50,000 bombs and mines. Let's make him your patron saint for the coming weeks. Why? Because I suspect you will be able to summon a metaphorical version of his power: an extraordinary capacity to

By ROB BREZSNY week of March 20

keep volatile situations from blowing up. You'll be a virtuoso at waging peace and preventing strife.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): There was a time, less

than a century ago, when pink was considered a masculine color and blue a feminine hue. In previous eras, many European men sported long hair, wore high heels and favored clothes with floral patterns. Franklin D. Roosevelt, one of America's most prominent 20th-century presidents, sometimes wore skirts and feather-bedecked hats as a child. With these facts as your keystone, and in accordance with astrological omens, I encourage you to experiment with your own gender expressions in the coming weeks. It's prime time to have fun with the way you interpret what it means to be a man or woman—or any other gender you might consider yourself to be.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): According to

estimates by population experts, about 109 billion humans have been born on planet Earth over the millennia. And yet I'm quite sure that not a single one of those other individuals has been anything like you. You are absolutely unique, an unmatched treasure, a one-of-a-kind creation with your own special blend of qualities. And in my prophetic view, you're ready to fully acknowledge and celebrate these facts on a higher octave than ever before. It's high time for you to own your deepest authenticity; to work with extra devotion to express your soul's code; to unabashedly claim your idiosyncratic genius.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): We don't know as

much about European history between the sixth and ninth centuries as we do about other eras. Compared to the times that preceded and followed it, cultural and literary energies were low. Fewer records were kept. Governments were weaker and commerce was less vigorous. But historians don't like to use the term "Dark Ages" to name that period because it brought many important developments and activities, such as improvements in farming techniques. So in some ways, "Lost Ages" might be a more apropos descriptor. Now let's turn our attention to a metaphorically comparable phase of your own past, Capricorn: an era that's a bit fuzzy in your memory; a phase about which your understanding is incomplete. I suspect that the coming weeks will be an excellent time to revisit that part of your life and see what new evidence and insights you can mine.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Why do some

American libraries ban certain books, ensuring they're unavailable to local readers? The reasons may be because they feature profanity or include references to sex, drug use, the occult, atheism and unusual political viewpoints. Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis is one of the most frequently censored books. Others are Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Beloved by Toni Morrison and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. In my astrological opinion, these are exactly the kinds of books you should especially seek out in the coming weeks. In fact, I suggest you commune with a variety of art and ideas and influences that are controversial, provocative and intriguing.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): At the age of 97, Piscean cartoonist Al Jaffee is still creating new material for the satirical Mad magazine, where he has worked since 1964. There was one 63-year stretch when his comic stylings appeared in all but one of Mad’s monthly issues. I nominate him to be your role model during the next four weeks. It's a favorable time for you to access and express a high degree of tenacity, stamina and consistency. Homework: What's the thing you lost that should stay lost?
