As advertising plays a diminishing role in the media business, a growing number of news outlets are trying to get by on some blend of paywalls, donations and auxiliary revenue. San Jose Spotlight, the prolific hyperlocal website launched last month by former Merc reporter RAMONA GIWARGIS, took the non-profit route. With help from her husband, JOSH BARROUSSE, she cobbled together support from a unionaligned cast, including Santa Clara County Supervisor CINDY CHAVEZ, deputy county exec STEVE PREMINGER, South Bay Labor’s BEN FIELD, Working Partnerships USA executive DERECKA MEHRENS and former WPUSAer BOB BROWNSTEIN. Just this week, another local watchdog unveiled a newsgathering project bankrolled by a wealthy patron with mutual enemies and an ax to grind. SUSAN BASSI—whose bitter divorce battle turned her into one of the fiercest critics of the judicial branch writ large and District Attorney JEFF ROSEN in particular—announced this week that she’s teaming up with They businessman CLYDE BERG Did on a journalism venture What? focused on investigating SEND TIPS TO the local family courts and FLY@ the cottage industry that METRONEWS. feeds off of Silicon Valley’s COM notoriously contentious divorce cases.

Berg’s interest in Bassi’s mission stems from his own foray into the legal system when the centimillionaire’s muchyounger ex-wife accused him of sex crimes involving guns, golf putters and dog collars. By the time a judge deemed her claims an elaborate hoax, the ordeal cost Berg millions in legal fees, two years defending against criminal prosecution and irreparable harm to his otherwise uneventful reputation.

In her press release unveiling Berg’s patronage, Bassi promised to dive deep into “family courts and law enforcement agencies dealing with intimate partner violence, sexual assault and false claims made during divorce and custody cases.”

Because Silicon Valley can afford it, she wrote, and “justice is never served when the media isn’t watching.”

CRASH COURSE MedWhat founder Arturo Devesa says his dreams of making it big in Silicon Valley came crashing down in a mess of litigation over double-dealing and stolen secrets.

Start to Finish Claims of fraud go both ways in Stanford-StartX lawsuit

HIS IS NOT how Arturo Devesa envisioned his fate when he moved to Silicon Valley at age 25.

The ambitious young entrepreneur founded MedWhat in Florida in 2010 to create a healthcare virtual assistant inspired by his mother’s experience fielding patient queries as a nurse— an artificially intelligent chatbot that could answer people’s medical questions. After winning $30,000 in a business pitch competition at Florida Atlantic University, where he worked as an adjunct professor, he moved to Palo Alto in 2011 with hopes of growing the company. Two years later, the highly competitive Stanford University-backed StartX

venture capital fund accepted Devesa and MedWhat into its fold.

Things were looking up.

But Devesa’s dream of making it big in the tech industry soon ebbed into a nightmare of litigation. Claims of fraud, stolen company secrets, a lawsuit and counter lawsuit have embroiled MedWhat and StartX— and several investors along with them. Devesa says the legal ordeal has made him question everything he believed about Stanford’s highminded pursuit of innovation and Silicon Valley’s promise of meritocracy.

“I was really naive, and now I just see it for what it is,” Devesa says. “It is not this amazing entrepreneurfriendly thing that everybody talks

about; it's just business. It's like Wall Street.”

StartX began in 2009 as a small student-led startup accelerator on Stanford University’s Palo Alto campus. Four years later, it joined forces with the elite university as Stanford-StartX, touting the same founder-friendly mission. But as a for-profit entity working under the aegis of a non-profit university, it now had a legal obligation to enforce a clear separation of powers from the academic institution that jumpstarted it with a $3.6 million grant.

Some 650 companies later, the fund went from raising an average of $1.1 million per company to $9.3 million and built up a thriving revenue model by courting some of the biggest corporate names in the U.S. And now, it’s slated to close.

“We invested in StartX’s program development because we saw the potential for it to provide great value to Stanford entrepreneurs,” Stanford’s Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer Randy Livingston said in a Jan. 17 announcement of the fund’s decision to stop making new investments after June 30. “We are pleased that this

lawsuit claims there’s no proof Massive Investment did, either.

But Devesa says he wasn’t trying to mislead anyone, and and he fell victim to a broken promise by Regent Capital. He knew their due diligence process could take time, but he says they strung him along by dragged it out for months. Devesa says he was taken aback when Stanford-StartX sided with investors in alleging a variety of missteps by MedWhat.

In researching potential motives, he says he looked up investments by Stanford-StartX in Crunchbase, an online trove of data about companies and funding, and found that both the fund and Magic Stone invested in a direct competitor to MedWhat called Sense.ly. Though MedWhat’s contract with investors required that they disclose any conflicts of interest, Devesa says Stanford-StartX never once alerted him to its dealings with San Francisco-based Sensely.

There are differing schools of thought in Silicon Valley about whether to handle competing investments with care or avoid them altogether. It’s not unheard of for accelerator programs or investors to support competing companies.

Y Combinator, one of the highestprofile programs for startups that helped launch companies like Reddit, Dropbox and Airbnb, says some overlap is unavoidable. “Even if you tried not to accept competing companies, you'd still get overlap because startups' ideas morph so much,” the accelerator explains on its website. “The way we deal with it is that when two startups are working on related stuff, we don't talk to one about what the other's doing.”

But it can come at a cost. A Harvard Business School study published in 2015 determined that companies backed by VC firms with concurrent investments in direct competitors “were 30 percent less likely to introduce a new product in any given year.”

To Devesa, news of the fund’s investment in a competitor felt like a devastating betrayal. So he filed a countersuit in the San Francisco Superior Court last June, charging his investors with breach of contract, fraud, pilfering trade secrets and defamation, among other claims.

“They are destroying the value of their own investments,” Devesa says. Not to mention his faith in Silicon Valley.

It is gratifying that StartX is now in a position to move forward as a financially self-sustaining organization. We look forward to seeing what the community achieves next.”

To Devesa, the timing is more than coincidental. Though the university denies it, the MedWhat founder insists that the dissolution stems from his ongoing litigation, which accuses Stanford of using the fund as a mask by using non-profit employees and resources to run a venture capital enterprise. “My lawsuit shut it down after making public the fraud going on,” he says.

In a December court filing, Devesa claimed that the VC fund’s investments in MedWhat came from Stanford Management Company and “Stanford’s own bank accounts” and were signed by university employees. Since the money was coming from tax-exempt bank accounts under Stanford’s name rather than from the for-profit Stanford-StartX Fund, he says, that amounts to ”violating tax-exemption.”

Devesa’s questions about the structure and management of the Stanford-StartX Fund are just one more part of a multi-faceted case that dates back to April 2018 with a lawsuit first brought against MedWhat by several of its investors, including Stanford-StartX, Caixa Capital, Magic Stone Alternative Investments, Regent Capital Venture Ltd. and Startcaps Ventures.

Allegations in the initial claim last spring include breach of contract, securities fraud, unfair competition and unjust enrichment. Plaintiffs in the original case say Devesa lied about investments he had secured for MedWhat’s Series A funding round to make it look like he met Stanford-StartX’s minimum fundraising threshold.

Devesa purported that Regent Capital committed $3.2 million to MedWhat, according to StanfordStartX’s complaint, and that an entity called Massive Investment promised another $400,000. Based on an email from Devesa saying, “I confirm that all other investors have already funded,” Stanford-StartX agreed to contribute to the round by buying $400,000 of Series A shares. But Regent Capital ultimately did not invest, and the

UT BEYOND the darkness and the light, there is a milieu of Tibetan prayer flags, cholo artwork, posters, mirrors, spiritual knickknacks and demon masks. To riff on Rumi, I will meet you there. To be more specific, I speak of Paco Excel’s Death Before Dishonor tattoo studio, a fixture at the otherwise constantly changing area of Third and San Carlos in downtown San Jose.

The multi-story faded brown Victorian house first housed the legendary New Skool Tattoo shop back in 1995 until a bifurcation of historic proportion spawned an offspring, Death Before Dishonor, in 2008. One room, the separate yet related Bodhidharma Gallery, will host an art show by Joe Demaree this Sunday from noon to 5pm.

Full disclosure: Many people involved here are old, old friends of mine, but I haven’t been upstairs in this building for what seems like a century. As soon as I sit down in Excel’s studio and await his arrival, his apprentice gives me a can of

blackberry- and cucumber-flavored sparkling water. She sits at an old wooden desk in the corner, drawing ideas for tattoos while Sinatra’s “My Way” plays over the system. She started five months ago, I learn.

Upstairs and away from any sidewalk sightlines, Excel’s studio is a cross between a tattoo business, a ’90s San Jose rock scene archive, a Victorian antique shop and a comparative religious studies classroom. I see a collection of LPs in the corner, sandwiched between Buddhist iconography, a Sharks skateboard, a High on Fire poster, antiques, figurines, artifacts of Mexican folklore and a smattering of spiritual ephemera from around the world, including a gorgeous blue and white porcelain plate from an international Buddhist union. Many of these items are gifts that clients have brought Excel from other places.

Then Excel walks in and we talk about how his studio has evolved over the years. This is not some giddy San Jose faux-urban boosterism project.

The place is a bona fide sanctuary

carrying a radical sympathy for time, a site specific environment, an inseparable extension of Excel’s own life philosophy. It feels like an ancient shop you’d find buried away in some back alley of Bangkok or Mexico City, like something you’d see on a travel show, replete with washed-up expats, burnt-out foreign correspondents and nefarious characters lurking in the shadows for decades, not that I’m speaking from experience.

“It’s a little private and nonchalant, but that’s what I like about it,” Excel tells me. “I’m not really into the street shop thing with people looking in the window all the time.”

With subtle precision, Excel is expanding his operation toward the spiritual realm. After tattooing for 25 years, he felt he needed something else.

“My tattoo clients, they don’t come around just for tattoos anymore,” he tells me. “They kind of come around for something a little bit deeper than that. I’ve become kind of a counselor in a sense. When we tattoo people, the conversation gets really deep, there’s a release of pain, it becomes very meditative, and kind of like how acupuncture touches certain nerves, releases certain toxins. I think tattooing does that, too.”

As a result, Excel introduces his crew to yoga, vegan diets and nondualism on top of everything else.

Speaking of which, the Bodhidharma Gallery in the room next door to Excel’s room houses a Buddhistinspired suite of businesses thanks to Stephanie Tate, a yoga and Vipassana meditation teacher with a deep SoCal punk rock heritage. Mom’s Metta Browz is her microblading business, while Mom’s Metta Balm is her brand of skin care products, metta being the Buddhist concept of loving kindness.

In the same room, Demaree’s art show takes place this Sunday.

Back in Excel’s studio, I continue to bask in the cross-pollination of Buddhism, cholo art, punk rock and Victorian artifacts. Everything is connected, but alas, nothing in life is permanent.

“The Victorian mirrors and things like that go with the building because I was brought up in Victorian buildings,” Excel says. “I was raised to move old antiques. My dad collected antiques, so I like to keep antiques around me. I don’t really like new stuff all that much.

I’m not an IKEA guy.”

HEN JUSTIN Pomariga turned 18 last year, he dragged his mother to San Francisco to shop with him at Mr. S, the legendary leather and fetish store. He’d been anticipating his birthday for months, awaiting the day he could legally jump into the BDSM scene after years of Internet research.

“My mom is a very liberal person,” he says. But she hadn’t quite understood what her kid was into before they entered the store. “When she walked in there, she was like, ‘Justin, look at this!’” he remembers.

“She picked up a dildo, and I’m like, ‘What are you doing with that? Put that away!’”

Pomariga went home to West San Jose with a new puppy hood, ready to show it off that same day on GROWLr, a dating app like Grindr for bears. The visit would have been unimaginable for an older generation

of queer people, but Pomariga was born in the 21st century, and his mom, a certified nursing assistant, loves her kid for who he is.

Bigots used to warn about a gay agenda that would turn everyone’s children into perverts. They still say that in a lot of places across America (and, sometimes, in San Jose, like last year when the San Jose Public Library’s program Drag Queen Story Time faced backlash from homophobic parents). But there’s no sending this generation back into the closet. LGBT young people are digital natives who learned about queer sex and gender identity on the internet and aren’t afraid to talk about it.

“My sexual side has always been something that I really try to enjoy,” says Pomariga. “It’s something I love talking about.”

This youngest generation of queer kids are also the exception to the so-called “sex recession.” According to The Atlantic’s Kate Julian, young Americans are screwed because they’re not screwing. In a panicky cover story that spawned a rash of hand-wringing reactions, Julian

asserts that young adults are having less sex than previous generations, despite easy access to potential partners through their phones and fewer cultural taboos about who to sleep with. And the numbers do indicate less sex among young people: In 2017, about 40 percent of high school students reported having sex, compared to 54 percent in 1991, and the teen pregnancy rate is 67 percent lower than it was in 1991.

Some of Julian’s explanations seem plausible—sex is harder if you live with your parents, which many young people do; no one’s getting enough sleep, which hurts sex drive; Julian heard stories of young straight men who seem to think non-consensual choking is a good first-date idea, which turns women off—and others, like “obesity,” which Julian lists without comment, are just ignorant. (News flash: fat people enjoy sex like everyone else).

Julian observes that unlike straight people, LGBT young adults are having plenty of sex. But she doesn’t investigate why, nor does she acknowledge that a huge

percentage of young people identify as something other than straight.

Generation Z, born after 1995, is far queerer and more gender-fluid than the now-basically-middle-age millennials: a study of Generation Z conducted by U.K. market research firm Ipsos MORI found that a third of young people are gay or bisexual, and a recent UCLA paper concluded that 27 percent of California teens are gender nonconforming, meaning they reject the label “boy” or “girl” for something in between. Any analysis of sexual behavior that skips over queer sex is fundamentally incomplete.

But queer and trans people are often well-versed in the language of sex, gender and consent, because we have to deal with our differences at a young age. That makes us more inclined to know what we like and don’t like, and better at seeking it out or avoiding it. And the next generation of queer people, who grew up with great role models on TV and Twitter, gay-straight alliances in school, and the internet in their pockets, is even better at it than we were.

But even the paranoia about “the end of sex” from nice liberals feels icky, grounded in a fear that white straight people aren’t reproducing themselves. That’s the same fear that drove neo-Nazis in Charlottesville

to chant hateful slogans about Jews and people of color “replacing” them.

It’s also the fear that controls the conservative Quiverfull movement, where Christian families, like the Duggars of 19 Kids and Counting fame, have as many children as possible to fill their “quiver” of arrows for the coming war against the rest of us heathens. (Mike Pompeo, our evangelical Secretary of State, considers the rapture relevant to American foreign policy, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders thinks God wanted Donald Trump to be president, so arrows and quivers aren’t as far from mainstream politics as you’d hope.)

The sex panic also ignores Pomariga’s universe, perhaps because straight journalists seem mindbendingly resistant to talking to queer people about sex. Emily Witt,

a staff writer for The New Yorker, explored the world of camgirls, Burning Man orgies and orgasmic meditation in 2016’s Future Sex, but she didn’t ask a single gay person about their sex lives. She’s not directly homophobic; in ignoring gay sex altogether, she just seems to assume, good-naturedly, that gay relationships are the same as straight ones and therefore not worth investigating.

That “we’re all the same” narrative developed as a defense against bigots, who try to disgust their followers with comparisons of gay sex to bestiality, talking up the sexy parts to make us seem like freaks. So a lot of the conversation about gay rights has ignored sex altogether, afraid of giving haters more fuel for their fire. That means queer sex is usually absent from mainstream culture, or even mainstream versions of gay culture.

But queer and trans people do think about sex differently. We’re far less bound by rigid gender roles during sex, which means any of us can top or bottom as we choose, regardless of our femininity or masculinity. We pioneered safer sex as a community response to AIDS, and sex-positive lesbians managing histories of rape led the way on early conversations about consent. And straight people looking for a way out of the “recession” could learn a lot from our stories.

LEARNING CURVE Pomariga, a queer first-generation child of Filipino immigrants (“I say Filipino without the ‘American,’” he says with pride), has a septum piercing through his nose and braces on his teeth. The youngest of three, he came out in sixth grade, the same year his grandmother died back in the Philippines and his family was crammed into a house with another family. It was tough; everyone in school seemed to know he was gay within days of him telling his friends, though he’d barely come to the realization himself. But the rumors brought other gay and bi kids out of the woodwork. He dated a few of them until graduating from Boynton High School last year.

By then, he’d also built a parallel universe of friends on the internet, using forums like Disqus and through his own YouTube channel.

Sometimes they’d Skype, talking face-to-face from across the country about music, video production and sex. Someone gave him a book about Japanese bondage, which opened up a whole new world for Pomariga.

He started sleeping with dominant women in addition to men, which is why he uses the word “queer” instead of “gay” to describe his sexuality. “I brought a girl home once and my mom was like, ‘What’s going on?’” He loved the feeling of an empowered woman topping him, though he still meets dates at the Watergarden, a gay bathhouse on The Alameda in San Jose.

Old people have always clucked about young people’s weird new habits. These days, the clucking centers on Gen Z’s so-called internet addiction, with headlines like “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” and “The Loneliest Generation.”

Some of it is about gender: They make us use confusing pronouns! (A big chunk of Generation Z knows someone who uses gender-neutral pronouns, according to a Pew Research study from last month, but it seems that old people can only

observe from the op-ed pages in bewilderment.) And now, apparently, they’re even doing sex wrong: They write up contracts before they make out! They’ll be the end of civilization!

But when Pomariga talks about sex, he brims with an enthusiasm that comes from real confidence, and that’s something that both straight kids and everyone’s baffled parents could learn from.

GROUP CHAT It’s a Friday night at the LGBTQ Youth Space on South First Street in downtown San Jose, and there are a handful of people watching the most recent episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race on a big screen, with the lights dimmed, theater-style. In the bright front room, where the end tables are stocked with homemade glitter snow globes, six young queer people, including Pomariga—all 18-22—are opening up about sex.

Tyree Jackson, 19, is planning to go home after the conversation, but he looks ready for a night out. He’s wearing knee-high white Chuck Taylors that zip up his leg over carefully ripped black jeans. He wears a white sweatshirt, a ’90s choker, and tiny dangly cross earrings in each ear like George Michael. He works “only

“Really anywhere,” Danner says. “It gets annoying.”

LEARNING TO LOVE

CLASSIC TV It may have been edgy for a network sitcom when it debuted in 1998, but for for queer kids born in 1998, ‘Will & Grace’ is as about as boundary-pushing as ‘I Love Lucy’ is for older generations. on Wednesdays” and, like everyone else in the group, lives at home with his parents. He’s got a crush on a close friend who’d planned to join the conversation but didn’t. “It’s hard to know what’s gonna happen,” he says.

Jessica, 22, who asked that her last name not be used, met her girlfriend on Tumblr. She appreciates how the Internet connected her to other gay people in the small town in Massachusetts, where she grew up a South Asian kid. “I think it can help people who feel isolated,” she says.

Some might not have had problems meeting people before online dating, but for the rest of us, it can be a lifeline.

She and her girlfriend both live at home but find time to see each other anyway, taking advantage of their parents’ denial. “Both of our parents are pretty oblivious to it, which is weird because I think we’re loud sometimes,” she says.

It’s an oblivion rooted in homophobia, she suspects: “They think we’re both girls so it’s all innocent.” Her mother asks about

her “friend” often, though Jessica has come out to her directly before. “She’s told me, ‘Why don’t you try dating a guy,’” though Jessica has, and would rather be with women.

Also interested in relationships is Anthony Francis, 20 and mixed Caribbean-American, who came out as bisexual to his family four years ago. Like Pomariga, he knows his mother wants to meet his dates.

“She’s like, ‘You best take that person home. You better introduce me so I can get to know him or her better,’” he says. Almost all his friends are straight men, but he’s found “a welcome family” at the Youth Space.

In a sweatshirt and athletic pants, he’s cheery and soft-voiced. “I’ve never really been in a relationship before, so I kind of wanted to experiment with my sexual orientation a bit more to see what it’s like.” He’s not interested in casual sex, preferring instead to “get used to that person and be in a healthy relationship.”

Joshua Danner, a black 18-year-old who is also bisexual, is open to casual

sex like Pomariga, but he stays away from apps like Grindr. (“All of Grindr is scammers,” Pomariga quips, and Danner agrees. Turns out they might have the digital intelligence to know who’s real online, unlike baby boomers, who share “fake news” more than everyone else, according to a study published in Science last month.)

In contrast to Alex, a mixed-race 20-year-old who wouldn’t mind if a partner asked for a nonsexual but romantic relationship—limited to hugging and cuddling—sex is fundamental for Danner. “I wouldn’t be dating them otherwise,” he says.

Raised a Southern Christian, Danner says he has found no shortage of dates in San Jose, but there’s a familiar, youthful grandiosity to his claims.

Like anyone in their late teens and early 20s, he and his peers are still figuring things out.

“I get at least two people hitting on me a day,” he brags.

“I wish I had that,” says Pomariga.

“I have like zero people hitting on me,” says Jackson.

Jessica’s challenges with queer dating are more than annoying.

“My girlfriend really likes to hold my hand and sometimes I feel, like, uncomfortable with that,” she says.

“You never know if there’s a random homophobic person walking down the street who’s gonna see it and say something or do something.”

Her fear isn’t unjustified; actor Jussie Smollett was attacked days after our conversation in Chicago, targeted explicitly as a black queer man.

Visibility, even in big American cities, can still be dangerous, and violence against LGBT people is up, according to a 2018 report from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs.

Alex has not yet had sex or been in a relationship. He thinks part of that has to do with social anxiety; he’s known about the Youth Space since April, but had only been once before, because it’s tough to go alone to a new place. (Is he especially unique? Every story from my early 20s involves bottom-shelf vodka and whole jugs of Carlo Rossi. If we’d had words like “social anxiety” back then, we would have used them. We would have hung out at the Youth Space, too.)

Alex does think his phone makes it easier to turn away from social interaction. “Obviously, I do crave face-to-face conversation, and with my really close friends, I obviously want to call or Facetime or see them in person.

But when it’s new people, it’s scarier,” he says. His phone offers so much distraction and he knows he can fall back on it instead of pushing himself to talk to strangers. “It might be a little dangerous to label a whole generation as [too phone-addicted to talk to people], but it does ring true,” he says.

Still, Alex is optimistic, and his friends don’t shame him. They’re all queer, some are poly, some are

monogamous, some are asexual, and they all learned about sex on the Internet. A quick Google search will get you pages of articles on all those identities, and at least in Alex’s social circle, they’re okay to talk about.

“My friends who have slept with lots people before are just like, ‘I’m excited for you to have sex for the first time.’ It’s not like, ‘You have to right now,’” he says. “We know the acronyms. We know the words.”

A friend who loves sex recently told him, “If my partner were to tell me they were asexual, I probably wouldn’t mind, as long as we cuddled and the romantic relationship was great and there was some sort of physical connection.” A few years ago, might that asexual partner have endured unwanted sex to maintain their relationship? Maybe.

That happened to Pia Cruz, 21, also from San Jose. She’s a bubbly Puerto Rican transgender woman who’s used the label “gray ace,” or gray asexual, for the last several months. Just like the Kinsey scale describes a spectrum of sexuality from heterosexual to homosexual and various shades of bisexual in between, someone who’s gray asexual falls somewhere between sexual and asexual. “I feel sexual attraction on rare occasions, but I don’t have enough desire to act on it,” Cruz says.

For Cruz, specific language helps her navigate a sometimes hostile dating world. The pool of people interested in her, she’s found, is “very tiny,” because anti-trans bigotry is so common and because asexuality is relatively uncommon. “Putting a label on it helps me communicate it to the world,” she says.

But she hasn’t always had those labels. In the past, her body dysphoria made sex uncomfortable. “But I would do it anyway, because no one told me otherwise, and I thought I had to do it,” she says. “My first two boyfriends, I kinda just had to, because it was just what was expected, and I didn’t know any better, that what I was feeling was valid.”

Cruz doesn’t think her experience is new. “Just because we have a word for something now doesn’t mean it never existed,” she says.

SEX RE-EDUCATION If the “sex recession” means more virgins like Alex or asexual people like Cruz, that’s not a bad thing.

Neither of them are having sex right now, but they’re also not having bad sex. Cruz has crushes on many of her friends, and she knows her sexual interest could change. “I may be totally into it, potentially in the future,” she says.

For his part, Alex is so excited by the prospect of eventual good sex that he wants to be a sex therapist.

If this generation is having less sex with better bounaries, less shame and more consent, that’s worth celebrating That’s not because of Netflix’s Sex Education—about a high school junior, also a virgin, who counsels his peers on their sexual problems— though Alex has seen a few episodes.

He had “terrible” sex education at his Catholic high school (condom, banana) so he took a sex ed class at De Anza College and watched a lot of instructional YouTube videos from people like TheNotAdam and Stevie Boebi to figure out what he needed to know. He’s not repressed; he came to the Youth Space on a Friday night and talked about his desires and interests, even as he struggles to communicate with his family about his identity. He’s lucky that San Jose has a place for that, that there’s no pressure to have sex there, and that he is part of a generation that can find straightforward, non-judgmental sex information online.

But a lot of the new conversations around sex are the “freedom from” kind: asexuals want freedom from the obligation to have sex, and aromantics want the freedom from the romantic relationships that are assumed to accompany sex. The #MeToo movement might be giving more of us the chance to say no to sex we don’t want. That’s freedom from assault, and it’s the sort of thing that young people like Alex are thinking about before they plunge into sexual activity. What do I want, who do I want to do it with, when is the right time, how do I feel about it, and am I ready?

As author Lux Alptraum wrote in response to Julian’s article in the Atlantic, “The only reliable source of answers we have for what our sex life ‘should’ look like is our own libido, desire and fantasies.” Alex is trying to discover those answers for himself, so far with different results than Pomariga.

Of course, we always technically had the freedom to reject sex we didn’t want, but it’s a lot harder to explain a long-term disinterest in sex without a commonly recognized term like “asexual.” That label also makes it easier for someone like Alex, who’s not asexual but isn’t having sex, to defend that choice socially.

In Sex Education, almost no one has sex while drunk or high; instead, they awkwardly fumble around with their dates and ask for help from the (teenage) school sex therapist when they need it. The sober, funny, all-gender sex in the show feels modern and never coerced; sometimes characters even stop in the middle when it goes wrong, instead of pushing through something awful. Affirmative consent means you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do, and if that means this generation of young people are having less sex or later sex with better boundaries, less shame, and more consent, that’s worth celebrating.

“We’re all just bouncing around in this crazy world trying to find someone,” says Cruz.

Unlike the gay bars of yesteryear, the Youth Space’s goal is to build sober, consensual community. On a recent weekday afternoon, four young people at a wooden table playing an extremely wholesome game of Jenga exclaimed when their tower collapsed. The space also offers workshops about healthy relationships and safer sex, raising awareness through the Santa Clara County Public Health Department’s Getting to Zero program, which works toward zero new HIV diagnoses.

“We allow a space for folks to talk about sex, but we also allow a space for folks who don’t want to, who may be more reserved,” says Stanley Gaeta, drop-in center coordinator at the Youth Space. “First and foremost, the Space provides a sense of community for folks to build friendships.”

Alex and Pomariga’s young lives represent two prongs of a new kind of American sexual freedom. For most of the LGBT rights movement’s history, we fought for the freedom to do things we hadn’t been allowed to do before: freedom to gather in gay bars, freedom to marry someone of the same sex, freedom to live as the gender we are without discrimination. But there’s an equally important thread running below those campaigns, which is freedom from doing things we don’t want to do.

When we sought to gather in gay bars without cops attacking us, we wanted freedom from police oppression. Part of why many of us cared about gay marriage is because we didn’t want to have to marry a person of the opposite sex; we wanted freedom from forced closeting, just as trans folks seek freedom from compulsory gender identities that don’t fit.

The same idea applies to the sex we’re having: Some of us, like Pomariga, want the freedom to explore unique desires that were taboo in the past. San Francisco’s history of sexual liberation fit into this first framework: Come here to figure out what it is that turns you on—whether it’s bondage or other men or, these days, cosplay—and

ESPITE THEIR EMPTY stomachs, the diners lining up outside of Taro San Japanese Noodle Bar were entirely peaceable.

On a mild winter night at the Stanford Shopping Center, anticipation for a homemade bowl of udon outweighed any grumblings about the wait time.

When the hostess greeted and then seated us at the counter, she immediately exclaimed that they made their own noodles in-house.

That sense of DIY kitchen craftiness isn’t immediately apparent in the restaurant’s decor. Blond wood beams

It’s a familiar mid-century modern aesthetic, lightened up with 21st century materials and modalities.

In a nod to the future of eating out, there’s a digital tablet at every seating place. The first concern that comes to mind with this setup is, “Who’s paying attention to the details of our order?” At Taro San, the answer is a comforting, “Everybody.”

Three different servers brought our dishes to the table. Each time we had a request for something offline— spoons or an extra plate—they were all helpful. One waiter in particular sounded genuinely interested in what we thought of our meal. Though

you’d think otherwise, the presence of an e-menu didn’t eliminate those kinds of casual interactions.

And, for a restaurant that’s still in its soft opening phase, the owners had already worked out an efficient system of receiving orders and getting them out to the dining room.

With nearly a dozen items to choose from on the list of appetizers, we started with roasted Brussels sprouts ($7) and a crab sunomono salad ($7). Instead of a tangy balsamic vinegar that many chefs use to sauté their sprouts, here the miso glaze rendered them light and crisp. The miso didn’t mask the leafy flavor of the sprouts themselves. The dish included candied bacon and edamame crisps that offered an unexpected crunch somewhere between popcorn and corn nuts. Sometimes a sunomono or cucumber salad can look wilted and weighted down with sogginess.

That wasn’t the case with this version.

The chef had cleverly arranged the wakame seaweed and slivers of cucumber to cover the white and red-edged pieces of crab meat. Each small stack of greens contained the

pleasingly pungent taste of vinegar, sugar, salt and soy sauce.

Despite being on the “to share” section of the menu, the seared salmon toro sashimi ($15) and chicken karaage ($9) are both substantial enough to (nearly) qualify as entrees. Seven pieces of salmon cut on the diagonal are served on a long plate, beautifully arranged with thin slices of jalapeño, stems of watercress and little dollops of ikura, or red caviar. The seared fish takes on two different shades of pink. Each morsel is a refreshing, bright bite. But the boneless pieces of chicken karaage were fried to perfection. The chef, Jerome Ito, doesn’t fall into the easy trap of saturating the fry with sauce.

You can taste delicate hints of it, but he doesn’t let it get in the way of the flavor of the chicken or the breading.

From our comfortable vantage point, there wasn’t ever a lull in the ferrying of dishes out to tables, and it took a while for a bowl of tori paitan udon ($16) to arrive. As of last month, you could choose from four types of udon. Niku (beef rib eye), the tori paitan udon (chicken in a creamy broth), vegan or duck tsukemen (cold ramen dipped in a hot fish broth).

When one of the servers did deliver our bowl, the soup was steaming and flecked with black sesame seeds.

In case you’ve been suffering from a chicken deficit, this bowl of udon is about as chicken-y as you can get. Slices of roasted white meat swim in the golden broth while a chicken meatball, or tsukune, skewer is served on top.

Vegetables do make an appearance— including enoki mushrooms and baby bok choy—but they’re minor players in this chicken fantasia.

When we’d finished our meal about an hour after taking our seats, the hopeful faces in line had changed, but the length of it had not. Everyone there seemed to know what was ahead of them: a comforting bowl of soup, homemade noodles and plates of fried chicken cooked to satisfy the fussiest of palates.

Fans of French electronic composer Anthony Gonzalez (better known as M83) are familiar with his capacity for creating vibrant and electrifying compositions. This is the man, after all, who named his hit 2011 album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. It makes sense, then, that Gonzalez was tapped to pen the soundtrack for Volta, the latest touring show from Canada’s high-flying performance troupe, Cirque du Soleil. The big show under the big top comes to San Jose this week. Combining traditional acrobatics and elements of action sports with the company’s standard psychedelic palette, it promises to be an extravagant and exciting entertainment experience. (NV)

So many peace-loving, flowerpowered Baby Boomers were devastated by the election of Richard Nixon. The same goes for the wide-eyed Millennials, who as recently minted adults cast their very first presidential votes for Barack Obama, only to be deflated by the rise of Donald Trump. In 1982, a cohort of Gen-Xers—raised by successful hippy parents on Manhattan’s Upper West Side—find themselves in a serious crisis of confidence as Jimmy Carter is routed by his Republican challenger, a Hollywood B-lister. This play follows three lost souls for 48 confusing hours at the dawn of the Reagan Era. (NV)

Wed, 9pm, Free Cafe Stritch, San Jose Bay Area musician Marinero crafts gauzy, laid-back indie rock,inflected with Spanish and island flourishes. His latest single, “Flor de Jamaica,” is a wispy number that sways lightly like a palm tree blown by a mild tropical breeze. The track features bright strokes of bittersweet guitar chords, glittering atop a calm ocean of wavy church organ and splashy drums. He’s set to release a fulllength album this spring with the San Jose-based record store and label, Needle to the Groove.

This is the subject of Nufonia Must Fall, a multimedia hip-hopera by Eric San (Kid Koala) and K.K. Barrett. Hip-hop heads know San as the DJ and turntablist of Deltron 3030. Barrett worked on Being John Malkovich and Her. In Nufonia, which features live puppets, live video and and live music, a robot faces his own obsolescence while attempting to pen a song for the woman he loves. (NV)

The Brooklyn-based performance group Half Straddle presents this hybrid show, which is part rock concert and part theatrical production, centered on a live band working through issues such as complicated family dynamics, sexuality and feminism with songs. It’s all based on playwright and Half Straddle artistic director Tina Satter’s real-life estrangement from her sister. The New York Times calls it “fantastical, odd and sometimes so tender, it’s raw.” The production runs three nights, Thursday through Saturday. (WB)

Not to be confused with the swashbuckling English novel and its many movie adaptations (that’s Beau Geste), this stage comedy presents a young Jewish woman trying to fool her meddling parents by hiring an actor to play her perfect boyfriend while keeping her real goy-friend—a WASP-y executive named (of all things) Chris Kringle—under wraps. Naturally, things get complicated when she begins to have feelings for the actor, and hijinks inevitably ensue. The production runs through March 10. (WB)

Anerae Brown is not the only rapper to keep a career afloat from behind bars. However, the dedication and ingenuity Brown demonstrated while serving a 31-year sentence for first degree murder are certainly notable. Over the course of his 26 years in prison, he released 12 albums, recording grainy flows over a payphone. His talent and gangbanging backstory helped make him an underground hiphop legend. On parole and living in Oakland since late 2018, the man better known as X-Raided is touring again—out to prove that his both truly reformed and truly deserving of his celebrity. (NV)

The televised improv comedy show where “everything’s made up and the points don’t matter” launched thousands of community improv groups back in the early 2000s, when it was a ratings behemoth for ABC. After nearly a decade off air, Whose Line is it Anyway? was revived by the CW and is now hitting the road with a series of unscripted performances based on audience participation and featuring show mainstays Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops, Jeff B. Davis, Joel Murray… and maybe even you. (WB)

Tue, 7:30pm, $43+ Center for the Performing Arts, San Jose Debuted in 1982, Cats is one of the most recognized productions in American musical theater of the last 50 years. Penned by contemporary master Andrew Lloyd Webber, this Tony Awardwinning musical ranks fourth on the list of longest-running shows on Broadway—eclipsed by The Lion King, Chicago, and Webber’s magnum opus, Phantom of the Opera. PERA SAN JOSE’S Moby-Dick is a fresh take on an American classic. The opera, a contemporary adaptation by composer Jake Heggie and writer Gene Scheer—debuted

by Dallas Opera in 2010—is based on Herman Melville’s magnum opus about a whaling ship, the Pequod, its crew of philosophical sailors, and the obsession of its monomaniacal, onelegged commanding officer, Captain Ahab.

The overture opens on a massive

matte painting of swelling waves, which itself rolls up to reveal an impressive geometric set, featuring large cylindrical blocks and curves, textured with old maps that constitute different parts of the whaling ship while looking almost like an observatory. The show commences with soft, melancholic tones and minor chords that phase into bold, bombastic phrasings in step with the reveal of the ensemble cast—sailors toiling away aboard their doomed vessel and dramatically bellowing in unison.

Soon, we are introduced to Queequeg, an American Indian sailor who proceeds to wake up the rest of the ship with an indigenous ritual

and dance. This leads to a religious argument between Queequeg and Greenhorn, the opera’s main protagonist, who in the original book is called Ishmael. From there, we are introduced to the ship: There’s the peg-legged, scarfaced Captain Ahab; his first mate, the shrewd but conflicted Starbuck; and their squadron of ragtag shiphands.

This adaptation is a dramatic, visually impressive anthology of poignant moments that unfortunately don’t add up to cohesive whole. While the performers bring their A-game, there are plenty of problems with this show, mostly stemming from the script.

Ashraf Sewailam, who plays Queequeg, has a deep,mellifluous baritone. It is matched in its richness by Noah Stewart’s, whose Greenhorn has a more buoyant timbre, allowing it to rise above the other baritones in the cast, such as Justin Ryan, who plays Starbuck. The deckhands, when singing together, work as a Gregorian-chanting Greek chorus. The power and depth of their combined voices is palpable, though at times the ensemble works

against the leads, swallowing up or muddying their melodies.

Appropriately, Captain Ahab (played by Richard Cox) has a delicate tenor that pierces through his men’s bassy chorus and shows deceptive power in certain moments.

Throughout, the cast bring intimacy and tension to this otherwise hard-toplace adaptation.

As is so often the case with and Opera San Jose production, the sets are simply stunning. The stage is centered around a two-story mast, which lifts and turns with other large set pieces depending on the scene. The backdrops are abstract yet effective. Whether the cast is out on the open water in search of the great white whale or interacting within the bowels of the ship, they are completely enveloped by their surroundings.

Unfortunately, despite its strong cast and impressive stage design, MobyDick suffers from numerous issues, most of which trace back to the music and libretto by Heggie and Scheer.

Everything about this adaptation feels bastardized, cheapened or infantilized.

Though the score starts out moody and interesting, it is difficult to discern any real separation between movements. Instead, the orchestra seems adrift, floating aimlessly from one dark and somber phrase to the next with little distinction.

The action and dialogue also feel hurried and misinterpreted. This operatic adaptation completely misrepresents the complexities of character, life, philosophy, death and dualism that are brought so magically to life by Melville in the original story. Characters that were originally full of depth are reduced to shallow caricatures. This extends to the libretto, which seems like a mix of actual prose from the book slapped together with convenient plot-moving explication—injected haphazardly and incongruously.

It is common for adaptations to suffer when moving from the page to the stage, and though this epic opera has its shortcomings, it is certainly worth seeing. It is Moby-Dick, after all.

Beau Jest A COMEDY FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

ODD COUPLE Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly play portray the comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in ‘Stan & Ollie.’

JOHN S. BAIRD’S biopic Stan & Ollie has a certain inflationary quality, regarding the appeal of a comedy team in their sunset years. But in lovingly re-creating Laurel and Hardy’s mid-1950s tour of Britain, it’s a film with lots of charm.

The road is tough on two aging performers. It’s bad when no one shows up at the music halls, and it’s worse when they’re congratulated for surviving their has-been status. At a seaside pavilion, the hostess toasts them: “Still going strong, and still using the same material!”

Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) is revealed as the sparkplug of the act, the writer who understood the formula. No matter who else was around them, on screen or stage, Laurel and Hardy needed to be the only person in the other’s world.

As befitting his massive flesh, Oliver Hardy (John C. Reilly) has trouble with his vices. He accumulates exStan & Ollie wives and has a taste for gambling that takes whatever money the alimony leaves. New complications come PG; 98 Mins. with the arrival in London of the team’s wives, who are Feb 15-21 united in mild detestation of each other. Stan’s Russian 3Below Theaters and haughty Ida (Nina Arianda) is a bit of a princess & Lounge compared to Oliver’s spouse, Lucy (Shirley Henderson, first rate as always). Seeing Ollie and Lucy laying down together in their room at the Savoy, him immense, her tiny, one gets the pleasure of marveling at the way opposites attract.

Performing Laurel and Hardy’s cherishable “Trail of the Lonesome Pine,” Coogan and Reilly may be even better singers than the originals.

They eclipse your memories of their models, with Coogan imitating Stan’s monkeyish head scratch and Reilly, through the fat suit and makeup, evincing the beatific side of Ollie.

It doesn’t break new ground, this biopic, but it has its stinging moments.

When the two get into a fight about an old rift, this time Ollie’s slow burn is real, and so is Stan’s hesitant peacemaking.

John Paul Kelly’s lavish production design drips with nostalgia; it can be a tad too sweet and rich for the times, but it’s more evidence that this film was a labor of love.

EXORCIZED Though the Academy initially shortlisted ‘Suspiria,’ the excellent remake featuring a Thom Yorke score won’t appear in this year’s Oscars.

Dance of Death Witchcraft, Nazism and occult aesthetics converge in smart, thrilling ‘Suspiria’

AUNTED HOUSES ARE bad, but what’s really frightening is a haunted city. Suspiria was one of the best of 2018, but it had a too-short release and then wasn’t made available through its distributor until last week.

Suspiria—“six acts and an epilogue in divided Berlin”—shows a coven of bloodthirsty witches as just one cadre of plotters in a city riddled with them. It unfolds during the “German Autumn” of 1977, the era of the Red Army Faction, of kidnappers and terror bombings.

The audio backdrop to this story of fear isthe warble of German police

sirens, and helicopters hovering over the scenes of crimes.

Luca Guadagnino, of Call Me By Your Name, and his cinenamatographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom (Uncle Boonmee…) aestheticize the horror, making it surreal and full of dread.

In the pretitles, a patient bursts in on the aged German psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Klemperer (Tilda Swinton in one of a series of multiple parts).

The young girl Patricia (Chloe Grace Moretz) is as sing-songing mad as Ophelia. She has tales of persecution.

They’re stealing her hair and urine, and they’re threatening to gut her.

She leaves behind baffling notebooks filled with strange geometric patterns.

The titles are scored with a chilling D-minor waltz—penned by Thom Yorke of Radiohead—performed on what sounds like an imperfectly tuned dance studio rehearsal piano. We witness an Amish woman (Malgorzata Bela), mutely pleading for death.

In Berlin is a brutalist performance hall of streaky green marble and dingy curtains. It’s the home of the Markos Tanzgruppe, where a new dancer, Susie (Dakota Johnson), is moving into the dormitories.

Susie was raised Amish, the daughter of the dying woman we saw. The American girl’s skills attract the one reasonably warm instructor there, Mme Blanc (Swinton again). Behind the walls of the dance troupe, the inner circle has a divisive vote on their leadership. Neither side is particularly happy with the outcome. The wit of David Kajganich’s script is that organized religion, even the satanic Old Religion, is just politics by other means.

Suspiria takes The Red Shoes or Black Swan to the next level of horror.

If there is an alchemy in ballet— making the human body do what it normally can’t—it explains a

favorite movie fantasy that with choreographed beauty comes a sacrifice. What if everything that an artist talks casually about regarding the “ritual” in their arts came true?

The biggest idea in Dario Argento’s 1977 original Suspiria was an Unholy Trinity of three mothers, older than the Fates. That’s the most important carryover into this new version—at its finale, in an underground witch’s sabbath. As in the 1977 original, there are fantastically shocking images even before the climactic bloodbath. The literal meaning of “torture” is to twist a person like a screw. The crumpling and spindling of the dancer Olga (Elena Folkina) by supernatural forces is edited to mirror Susie’s first triumph as a dancer.

Johnson, slim and scarlet-wigged, here survives the 50 Shades magillah, and proves herself to be a powerful, fearless dancer, and a mysterious central figure.

There are unanswered questions here. One is how the Markos group was able to survive the decadent arthating Third Reich. In their one public performance here, the troupe wears tattered, blood colored costumes and Byzantine eye makeup. They dance on a floor that’s covered with a peculiarly elaborate sort of geometrical figure: a pentagram that went to grad school. Their piece, called “Volk,” was originally created in 1938.

“Folk” was a loaded word in Nazi Germany, as in the slogan “One people [ein volk], one empire, one Fuhrer.” We’re never entirely sure whether these witches, with their great appetites for pain and suffering, helped to elevate Hitler, or if he was just something they ignored during the performance of their ancient rites.

You’ll hear that it’s tasteless to tart up a horror film with the ultimate horror of the Reich. But evil is evil, and horror films are all about the parts of the human story that do not admit light. But Suspiria is not completely morbid; the movie goes completely emotional in its last shot, as the camera pulls up to note the last relic of a love already erased from life by witchcraft and history.

Oakland’s Bells Atlas compare themselves to a kaleidoscope, and for good reason. Led by the dusky vocals of singer Sandra Lawson-Ndu, there are times they could be confused for a pop band. However, those moments are fleeting—disappearing as quickly as they materialize into the night, along with the bob and weave of percussion, mallets and darkly shimmering guitars. If anything, Bells Atlas resemble the weirdo world pop of groups like Haitus Kaiyote. They are equally influenced by R&B, electronic, soul and jazz. Smooth without being smooth, Bells Atlas will tick a lot of boxes for jazz fans, while pushing them in a distinctly new direction.

The Bad Plus Feb 21, 7:30pm, $30 Cafe Stritch, San Jose

Gilles Peterson

The Bad Plus are a picture-perfect example of the many contradictions and possibilities of 21st-century jazz.

It’s been 15 years since the Minneapolis trio (piano, bass, drums) released their iconic cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and the DNA of that track is now firmly entrenched in the gene pool. Though not the only jazz cover of “Teen Spirit” (or even the first—Josh Roseman beat it by two years), it was considered borderline heretical at the time, almost a millennial prank. These days flirtations outside genre lines are now more acceptable, but that’s due in large part to the Bad Plus themselves.

More than anyone on this list, the question of “Is this jazz?” applies most obviously to Gilles Peterson. A DJ by trade, Peterson does not play an instrument in the traditional sense.

Instead, he was an early innovator of the genre called “acid jazz,” fusing familiar jazz sounds with Latin dance, Brazilian psychedelic, hip-hop and electronic synthesizers, all through spinning and sampling. Known for pulling out dusty deep cuts from all corners of the world, Peterson won’t be selecting music that falls squarely in any one category. In this sense, his work embodies the exploratory, and world-traveling nature of jazz music.

HESE DAYS, IT seems that innovation outpaces our ability to understand what it is doing to us.

As Californians, we are used to tectonic shifts, but the ground beneath us is now in a constant state of flux.

There are new means of transportation, communication and expression; new ways to meet people, new ways to smoke, new ways to listen to and consume music.

All this leads us to question what exactly constitutes “jazz” in the 21st century. The quintessential American art form is now more than 100 years old.

While it was rebellious and celebratory in the early to mid 20th century, is that true today? Or has it become something else, changed forever by the shifting flows of time and culture?

Truthfully, jazz has been at something of a crossroads for a long time, its meaning hotly contested for decades. Some will say Miles Davis’ electric band wasn’t true jazz due to its rock & roll instrumentation. Others will say not only was that jazz, but the harmonically dense prog of British rockers Soft Machine falls under the same umbrella. And what are we to make of Norah Jones’ piano-pop album Come Away With Me, released by heavyweight jazz label Blue Note in 2002? Does its label define the genre?

The fact of the matter is that the

meaning of jazz is under constant negotiation. At this year’s Winter Fest, San Jose Jazz has brought together some incredible artists who fundamentally challenge the definition of the genre. Below are some of the best artists on display at this year’s Fest: the dreamers, stretchers, and border-pushing musicians of 21st-century jazz.

While jazz began in North America, the musics of South and Central America (as well as the Caribbean) have always been an indispensable part of the genre. Hailing from Mexico, Chéjere play a Central American version of the Afro-Cuban genre of “son,” creating a sound that is pan-American, reflective of the full diversity of the Western Hemisphere.

Acoustic and polyrhythmic, Chéjere boast beautiful vocals, intoxicating musicianship and a welcome expansion of the meaning of jazz around the world.

R&B BROS Identical twins Wallace and Walter Scott have been going strong for 50 years.

Smooth Half-Century SMOOTH R&B VOCAL group The Whispers have been a fixture of the music landscape for 50 years. With a sound that draws from vocal greats like The Temptations, The Whispers’ soothing approach keeps the focus on the vocals.

But the enduring act has also applied a solid slow-jam dance groove to its approach, earning a lengthy string of hits in the process.

Though they started in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts in 1963—and gained fame as a live act, aided in part by support and encouragement from Sly Stone—it wasn’t until the end of that decade that The Whispers scored a record deal. Led by identical twins Wallace and Walter Scott, The Whispers The Whispers would eventually release more than two dozen albums. Beginning with 1969’s “The Time Will Feb 15, 7:30pm, Come” (which topped out at No. 19 on Billboard’s $32.50+ R&B chart), the group would score 21 R&B charting SAP Center, San Jose singles over the next decade. The Whispers enjoyed crossover appeal, as nearly half of those singles would appear on the mainstream charts as well.

That all changed with the release of “And the Beat Goes On” in 1980.

No relation to the Sonny and Cher hit, the song displayed The Whispers’ seemingly effortless ability to change with the times. A sleeker, slicker sound for the new decade resulted in even greater success for the group; the Scott brothers hit the R&B Top 40 no less than 16 times in the ’80s. Three of those songs, including the 1987 smash “Rock Steady,” were crossover hits.

The Whispers remained mainstays on the R&B chart throughout the 1990s, with nine charting singles. Three of the Whispers’ LPs—1980’s Imagination, 1981’s Love is Where You Find It and 1990’s More of the Night— were certified gold. The Whispers (1979) and Just Gets Better With Time (1987) earned the platinum sales designation.

Today much of the group’s 1970s material is out of print; the few historical collections of their material focus on the ’80s and beyond, and many best-ofs are latter-day re-recordings of the classic-era material.

The Whispers’ front line has remained remarkably constant over the decades. Today the Scott brothers continue to lead the group; vocalist Leaveil Degree has been in The Whispers since replacing original member Gordy Harmon in 1973. And they continue to receive honors; in 2014 The Whispers were inducted into the Official R&B Hall of Fame. In 2009 the group released its first-ever gospel album, Thankful.

The group doesn’t maintain a heavy touring schedule these days; their SAP Center date headlining the “Valentines Super Love Jam” is one of only two announced West Coast engagements. —Bill Kopp
