It took an eternity, but San Jose’s stone age website has finally evolved into the modern era.

The self-described Capital of Silicon Valley has long been lambasted for its out of date web presence, but on Nov. 30 San Jose’s clunky website was transformed with a sleeker, more user-friendly design.

City spokeswoman ROSARIO NEAVES says the overhaul culminates a three-year process that kicked off when the last web contract expired. “That’s what prompted us to look at the change,” she tells Fly. “More importantly, we recognized that it was time for the city of San Jose to have a mobile-responsive design.”

With tech companies luring away prospective city employees with promises of higher wages and tantalizing perks, San Jose struggled to retain the right talent to see the redesign through. “We did have some staff turnover earlier this year,” Neaves acknowledges.

But with a new web administrator— Cinequest’s digital wizard, MATT OPSAL— city officials doubled-down with a “war room” presence to get the site launched before the dawn of the second decade of the 21st century.

The city’s new home page—which required a $550,000 bump this fiscal year to carry it across the finish line—boasts “top requested” services and data mines, including junk pickup, building permits and affordable housing. Residents can also use the address lookup bar on the homepage to find info on garbage, recycling, yard trimmings, water and whatever other mundane municipal needs one can imagine.

Another plus, per Neaves, is that the Economic Development Department’s under-the-radar blog—a lively little online chronicle of local business—gets a well-deserved boost.

Wonder Drug How a pharmaceutical company spent decades developing a breakthrough cystic fibrosis treatment BY JULIA KANE

N THE MORNING of Oct. 21, Lou Ann Alexander opened her email to find the news she’d been waiting nearly 16 years to read. “I was completely stunned,” she recalls. “I’m hoping this is what we’ve been praying for.”

When Alexander gave birth to Claire in June 2003, she seemed like a healthy infant. Then, at six months old, she developed pneumonia.

Realizing that her oxygen level fell dangerously low, her pediatrician immediately admitted her to the hospital, where she spent a harrowing week. In the months that followed, Claire kept getting sick until finally, at

15 months old, a blood test revealed that she had a rare genetic disease: cystic fibrosis.

When Alexander, an optometrist in Santa Clara, looked up cystic fibrosis online, she learned that Claire’s body was producing abnormally thick, sticky mucus. It coated her lungs and obstructed her pancreas, causing frequent pulmonary infections and digestive issues. When Alexander read that the progressive disease would likely take Claire’s life in her early thirties, she says she “fell apart.”

A decade-and-a-half later, that bleak prognosis has changed drastically.

On Oct. 21, the FDA approved a revolutionary new drug called Trikafta. Now, 90 percent of cystic fibrosis patients—including Claire—

have a treatment that targets the underlying cause of the disease.

It has been a long road to this point. In June 1989, Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui and Dr. Francis Collins, two geneticists, pinpointed the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis, the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. The two scientists toasted their discovery with coffee mugs of Canadian whiskey. It was “a moment of celebration, but also a realization: now we have the real work to do,” said Collins, speaking to the annual North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, at the end of October.

In the decade that followed, scientists experimented with gene therapy, a method of replacing defective genes with healthy ones, but to no avail. Eventually, in 2000, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation—a non-profit started in 1955 by a group of parents who didn’t expect their children to make it to kindergarten— invested $40 million in a biotech firm in San Diego, California called Aurora BioSciences. Aurora had developed technology that could rapidly test chemical compounds on cells. The

testing potential drugs, a litany of obstacles stood in their way.

First, they had to understand the biology of the disease. Next, figure out how to clone lung cells from cystic fibrosis patients. Then, develop a method to see whether any of the chemical compounds worked on the test cells. And finally, after they’d identified a few promising candidates, work out how to get the medicine into a pill and design clinical trials. “It takes hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people working for decades to get a drug like this—a breakthrough drug—discovered, developed, and approved,” Leiden says.

As Vertex rushed to produce new drugs, patients like Claire worked to stay healthy. They were racing the clock. As cystic fibrosis patients get older, their lung function typically deteriorates due to infections, inflammation, and obstructions caused by the thick mucus. “What we want to do is maintain her current lung function for as long as we can,” Dr. Michael Tracy, Claire’s cystic fibrosis doctor and a pediatric pulmonologist at Stanford Children’s Health, explains.

Claire, who doesn’t think of herself as a sick kid, has another motivation for keeping her lung function high.

She loves to dance. As Claire practiced ballet combinations at The New Ballet School in San Jose on a recent Saturday morning, she moved from plié to pirouette to arabesque, every muscle of her body held in perfect tension.

“Technically, she’s very strong, and she has gorgeous artistry as well,” remarks Sarah Stevens, one of her instructors.

Claire spent July as a student with the American Ballet Theatre’s highly selective summer intensive program in New York City. Now, she spends two-and-a-half hours, seven days a week dancing and rehearsing for The New Ballet School’s upcoming production of The Nutcracker.

Staying healthy enough to keep dancing takes work. Twice a day Claire dons a high frequency chest wall oscillation vest, which shakes her lungs and dislodges the mucus. She uses inhalers and a nebulizer to take medications that open her airways, thin out the mucus, and then irritate her lungs, forcing her to cough up phlegm.

Strict adherence to the treatment plan is key. “You never get a vacation from CF [cystic fibrosis],” Alexander says. “Ever.”

foundation wanted the company to train its sites on cystic fibrosis drugs.

The concept of a charity giving millions of dollars to a for-profit company—known as venture philanthropy—was unorthodox, to say the least. “To go from the basic research—the academic research—to actually starting to develop new therapies, there needs to be a partnership, oftentimes with companies,” Dr. Michael Boyle, the senior vice president of therapeutics development at the foundation, explains. “They’re the ones who actually develop new drugs, not universities.”

Cystic fibrosis is rare, and there was no research suggesting that the root cause of the disease’s symptoms—dysfunctional CFTR protein within cells—could be fixed with a drug. Initially, pharmaceutical companies weren’t willing to gamble their R&D budgets on it, so the foundation stepped in and funded the early research, eliminating the financial risk. Unlike venture capitalism, the high risk-high reward system where investors fund startups hoping for a big payoff, the “big payoff ” the foundation bet on was a lifesaving drug therapy.

In 2001, Vertex Pharmaceuticals bought Aurora for its rapid drug screening technology. The company had a choice to make: keep researching cystic fibrosis, or focus on more prevalent diseases? If it hadn’t been for the funding from the foundation, Vertex would have discontinued the cystic fibrosis program. Although the foundation’s investment was small in the world of big pharma—the foundation has invested a total of $150 million in Vertex’s R&D program, Vertex has invested over $6 billion— the timing proved crucial.

At first, when Vertex scientists set out to develop a drug to treat cystic fibrosis by fixing a tiny defective protein—a rare feat in science—others in the pharmaceutical industry were dubious. “People actually laughed,” recalls Dr. Jeff Leiden, the chairman, president, and CEO of Vertex.

“Seriously. It was just like, there’s no way in the world that could be done.”

That didn’t deter the team at Vertex. They practiced research through brute force, eventually testing not a few targeted chemical compounds, but over a million. But before they even got to the point of

Claire also takes 30 pills a day, including three to four digestive enzyme pills whenever she eats. “She likes to boast about how many pills she can take at once,” her father Blake Alexander jokes. Her record is 12.

Claire, a reserved teenager with a droll sense of humor, tries to stay positive. She reveals the one good part of having cystic fibrosis. “I get to skip the lines at Disneyland,” she says with a shrug and a smile.

Ever since Claire’s diagnosis, doctors told her mom, dad, and older brother to keep her healthy because there were promising drugs just around the corner. The doctors hoped those drugs would be available by the time Claire turned 6, but that birthday came and went.

Finally, in 2012, there flashed a glimmer of hope. The FDA approved Vertex’s first cystic fibrosis drug, Kalydeco. The drug only treated about 4 percent of cystic fibrosis patients—there are over 1,700 genetic mutations, each of which affects

protein formation in a different way—but proved it possible to treat the underlying cause of the disease.

Claire’s family was hopeful. “Even if it’s not for your kid, you’re happy,” Lou Ann Alexander says.

Kalydeco was a big success for Vertex, and a proof of concept for the drugs that would follow. Leiden explains that although Vertex didn’t yet have the medicines to treat the majority of patients, “we felt we understood the biology in a way that could lead us there.” The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation sold its royalty rights for $3.3 billion, directing that money back into research.

Over the next six years, Vertex came out with its second and third cystic fibrosis drugs: Orkambi and Symdeko, which could treat about 50 percent of patients.

Unfortunately, none of the drugs worked for Claire. Her health started to slip. In March, Claire spent 10 days in the hospital with a nasty bout of bronchitis that

plunged her lung function from the high 90s down to 83 percent.

Then, on Oct. 21, the trajectory of Claire’s life changed. When Alexander first heard the news, she was hesitant. “You wonder sometimes if it’s too good to be true,” she says. She and her family had been waiting, hoping, praying for nearly 16 years. She started reading about the clinical trials.

In results published in The New England Journal of Medicine on Oct. 31, researchers found that after taking Trikafta for a period of six months, cystic fibrosis patients similar to Claire improved by 13.8 percent on pulmonary function tests, which measure how much air a patient can expel over one second. The average doesn’t tell the whole story, though.

Some patients saw improvements of over 25 percent. “Amazing! Isn’t that amazing?” Alexander exclaims.

Perhaps even more exciting, patients in the trial experienced an average of 63 percent fewer lung infections.

When it came to infections that led to hospitalizations or that required intravenous antibiotics, that drop was even higher. Those numbers mean Claire will spend fewer days in the hospital and more days dancing ballet.

Alexander struggles to put her emotions into words. “I felt like the entire time we’ve been battling time,” she says about waiting for something revolutionary to come along. “I think it’s finally here.”

Claire, too, is excited. She read a testimonial by Gunner Esiason, a 28-year-old cystic fibrosis advocate and one of the patients in the trial.

“Could I actually tell that it was working right away?” he wrote in a blog post. “You bet your ass I could.”

“I’m excited to see if it works like that,” Claire says when she first heard the news. “I hope it really works.”

Claire began taking Trikafta on Nov. 16, as soon as her insurer approved it. The drug has a hefty price tag—$311,503 per year—but with coverage and a Vertex patient support program, the Alexanders pay $15 per month. Since Claire started Trikafta she’s been coughing less, her heavy cough has all but disappeared, and she feels more energetic.

Although Trikafta is life-changing, 10 percent of patients still lack a therapy that treats the underlying cause of their disease. On Oct. 30, the foundation announced that it would channel $500 million into research on new cystic fibrosis therapies through 2025.

The cystic fibrosis community did take a moment to celebrate the milestone, though. At the annual North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference the last week of October, Collins, one of the researchers who discovered the gene back in 1989, took the stage.

Every time there is a breakthrough in cystic fibrosis research, he performs his original song, “Dare to Dream.”

Novel Idea Creators of Asian American literary anthology recount their struggle to be read

ORTY-FIVE YEARS ago, the first anthology of Asian American literature came into the world, a groundbreaking compilation titled, Aiiieeeee!

Just a couple weeks ago, two of the original editors—Shawn Wong and Lawson Fusao Inada—appeared at San Jose State University along with poet Marilyn Chin to discuss the literary diaspora’s evolution since the days of that original anthology. All three enlightened the capacity crowd of students with stories from the

’70s, especially what it was like for Asian American writers at that time, how they managed to overcome isolation and find each other, the insults hurled at them by the literary establishment, and all the obstacles surmounted by the subsequent generations. Of all the author events I’ve attended at SJSU for 20-plus years now, this event approached the very top. The history and the stories and were moving.

Wong is back in the news these days due to the controversy surrounding Penguin’s recent power grab over the 1957 novel No-No Boy

by Seattle’s John Okada. Concerning the plight of a Japanese-American draft resister in WWII, No-No Boy is now universally understood as the first Japanese-American novel. The original publishing run was only 1,500 copies—the publisher had it printed in Japan and shipped to the US because the subject matter irked many Americans—so by the time Okada passed away in 1971, the book had disappeared into total obscurity. Wong and his buddies discovered a used copy lying around in a bookstore and then contacted Okada’s widow to obtain permission to copyright and republish the novel.

Since no other publisher wanted it, Wong had to raise money and republish the book himself in 1976.

Three years later, he transferred the rights to the University of Washington Press, who’ve now sold over 150,000 copies of the book over the last 40 years while also evolving into a leading publisher of Asian American literature in general. To this day, No-No Boy has

had a dramatic influence on many members of Asian diasporas who wouldn’t have otherwise known that any such thing as Asian American literature existed that long ago.

However, earlier this year, Penguin, claiming No-No Boy was in the public domain, decided to republish the book on its own, without even contacting Okada’s family, thus unleashing a firestorm of controversy. Wong led the resistance, along with Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen, who has taught the novel in his classes for years. Thanks to a tidal wave of bad publicity and potential copyright lawsuits, Penguin eventually backed down and pulled its version of the novel from all US bookstores.

Just last week, Wong wrote an essay about all of this for Asian American Writers Workshop, a website I’ve also written for myself, so it was spectacular to see him stand there at the podium in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Main Library and read the essay in its entirety. His point was the struggle to rescue the novel from obscurity, and keep it in print, was just as important as the book itself. Time has proved him right.

SJSU students filled the room for the Aiiieeeee! event, almost all of whom were not even alive when the anthology first came out in 1974. After Wong read his essay, Marilyn Chin, decked out in a leather jacket with images of roses stitched into it, then took the podium to perform dramatic and hysterical monologues and various poetic forms, including some raunchy haiku that cracked everyone up. Or almost everyone. Some of the students seemed almost afraid to laugh.

Then came Inada with some glorious stories about what it was like to operate as a poet in the late ’60s and ’70s, trying to elevate an Asian American identity when that term was just starting to exist. It wasn’t easy.

All three of them testified to the struggles they had with traditional American professors decades ago, most of whom limited the academic study of literature to the same old canon and who thought nothing worthwhile had been written since 1940 or so.

Publishers were even worse.

All in all, the elders arrived, they spoke and they told stories. Let’s hope the publishing industry can finally catch up someday.

ROM THE 17TH floor of the KQED building downtown, San Jose is an impressive sight. The city of more than a million sprawls, unfurling against mountain ranges to the east and south and against an equally sublime range of suburbs to the north.

Normally, this view is only available to members of the Silicon Valley Capital Club. Today, however, there is an interloper among their ranks—a different kind of San Jose elite, still not quite used to the high life: producer B. Lewis.

It’s 10am and Lewis has already had a full day. While the rest of the coast was asleep, he was finalizing the art for his first proper full-length release, putting the finishing touches on an album cover he designed himself. Lewis BY MIKE HUGUENOR Sierra Nevadas, he was already north of Bakersfield on the I-5, making a trip from his new home in Los Angeles back to the place where it all began: San Jose.

This week, Lewis releases his debut, Sunset on Carmella.

Commissioned by San Jose Jazz, the record caps off a yearlong partnership between the musician and the local non-profit arts organization, which included a number of public performances and a series of lessons on music production delivered to a group of South Bay high school students.

For Lewis, the album is something of a farewell to his longtime home.

In October, the producer moved to LA after signing a deal a major management team, the same group behind some of the biggest pop hits of the last few years.

Pick one—the new record or inking the deal—and it would

already be a banner year for the producer. Yet both moves pale in comparison to Lewis’s other recent accomplishment: a writing credit on an album released just a few weeks ago by Kanye West.

The road here has been neither easy nor direct. In San Jose, few lamps light the way of the artist. But from the 17th floor, as the city comes to life, and Lewis puts a decade of grinding behind him, his future is looking bright.

PASSING PORTRAITS Born in San Jose in 1988, Bradford Lewis was raised in a musical household. The son of a jazz musician, he started playing bass while still in elementary school.

“Then guitar, and then piano. Pretty much all self-taught,” he says.

In his early years, the Lewis family moved around a lot, bouncing from Los Gatos to Willow Glen to South

San Jose. Eventually, they settled in Evergreen.

As a teenager, Lewis began going to all-ages shows in San Jose and Santa Cruz, most of them in DIY spots, church basements and community centers.

“I was watching these bands and thinking, ‘I can do this shit,’” he remembers.

Inspired by the scene’s accessibility, he started his first band in high school: a metal band he describes as “experimental and wild.”

“I was like, ‘What if we got thicker strings, tune down to Drop G and just see what happens?’”

That project was a learning experience. In addition to writing all the music, Lewis provided the equipment and practice space (the family garage), booked the shows and even drove the band around.

“It came to a point in time where I thought, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’”

For Lewis, the point had always been the music. Playing in the band got him interacting with other musicians and up on stage for the first time. Unequal workload aside, he enjoyed it. So, in 2007, after graduating high school, he enrolled at Ex’Pression College (now known as SAE Expression College) a local private university focused on training students for jobs in the entertainment industry. There, he began to hone his production skills, learning how to engineer, record and mix a session.

But all of that would just be prologue, the price of entry into a great coliseum of working musicians, all of them fighting the impossible and trying to survive in the Bay Area.

through the crates and checking out what he finds.

“I just love music,” the 38-year-old selector and show promoter says.

These days, Modiri is a part of the soul and R&B night “The Changing Same” at The Continental, where he spins under the moniker Shea Butter.

The first time he heard B. Lewis, Modiri was doing a little digital crate-digging on Bandcamp, clicking his way through every single release tagged “San Jose,” just to see what he’d find. That’s when he discovered one of Lewis’s first beat tapes.

“He stood out,” Modiri says. “I was like, ‘Who the fuck is this guy?’”

He was mystified. At the time, he had been organizing a recurring party called The Treatment. He thought he knew the San Jose music like the back of his hand. But then, here was this guy with these crazy beats.

Soon after, Mordiri saw that Lewis was playing a show at First Street Billiards, the former pool hall now home to Forager.

“I was, like, a fan,” he says. “I went up to him and I was like, ‘Dude, I love your shit. You’re awesome.’”

He invited Lewis to perform at The Treatment , and they became fast friends.

Modiri started coming by the studio, aka the garage at Lewis’s mom’s house.

“That was not a comfortable studio,”

he says. “It’s a garage. So when it was hot, it was fucking hot in there. And when it was cold, it was fucking cold.”

Still, Modiri was impressed by the music. Even more so, he was also impressed by Lewis’s work ethic.

If Lewis eventually had to move to LA to get where he wanted to go with music, it was certainly not for lack of trying here. From 2009 on, he collaborated with a vast range of artists big and small, many of them people he’d met around the Bay Area.

There was K.Flay, whose debut album had recently cracked the top 15 on the Billboard rap charts. There was a tour with Sonnymoon, a band featuring Anna Wise, who had just recorded all the female vocal parts on Kendrick Lamar’s studio debut, Good Kid M.A.A.D. City. In 2014, he produced Winter & The Wolves by Rhymesayers rapper Grieves, putting him in touch with the Midwest’s famously vibrant underground hip-hop scene. That record even featured an appearance by underground hip-hop heavyweight Slug, of Rhymesayers’ marquee act Atmosphere.

“We did about 85 percent of that album here in my studio,” Lewis told me back in 2016. “Slug doesn’t really do features anymore, so that was kind of a cool thing to put on my resume.”

The more he collaborated with people, met people from outside of San Jose who were connecting nationwide, the more people took notice of his work—and the drive that Mordiri had picked up on years earlier.

“He probably works 10 to 14 hours a day at recording music,” Modiri says. “All he does is make music. But unless you’re working with him, you don’t see it. It probably just comes off as, ‘Oh, he’s really talented.’ In reality, it’s years and years and years of being locked up in his studio.”

One of the people who noticed Lewis’ dedication was a musician in LA named Scott Fulton.

“I came upon his work on a music blog,” Fulton says. “He released this album of beats that really caught my attention. The production was really unique and forward-thinking. I listened to it a ton at the time.”

STRANGE THINGS By 2017, Lewis and Modiri had been friends for the better part of a decade, and their relationship had begun to change.

“It was just organic,” says Modiri. “It was never like, ‘Hey, be my manager…’

But that’s exactly what happened.”

In his first act as manager, Modiri told Lewis to write up a list of all the people he wanted to work with. After one look at that list, he gave Lewis a clear directive.

“He was like, ‘You need to get to LA ASAP. There’s nothing here for you in San Jose anymore,’” Lewis recalls.

Taking his new manager’s advice, Lewis started making trips down to Los Angeles, staying for a week

or two and doing the same thing he’d been doing in the Bay: meeting people, collaborating, grinding. It didn’t take him long to get in with in with the promoters of the iconic, long-running and now-retired LA party, the Low End Theory.

“It was very similar to what we were doing up here with The Treatment—a beats night,” says Modiri.

At Low End Theory Lewis was a hit, and was brought back repeatedly (including once for one of the event’s farewell shows). There, he made connections with a range of new people—among them an LA-based producer named Falcons. In 2018, Lewis and Falcons put out their collaborative Daydrift EP, a moody blur of neon synths, backpacker beats, and big pop hooks. With a team already behind Falcons, the five-song set brought Lewis’s music to an even wider audience.

Around the same time, Lewis had begun working on some tracks with a friend in LA he just calls “Jerry.”

“We have a good connection, good vibe,” Lewis says. “We like making weird stuff.”

One night while working on music together, Jerry told Lewis that Kanye was on the hunt for new beats. “I’m like, ‘Sure Kanye’s looking,’” Lewis remembers, not thinking much of it.

“Everybody’s always looking.’”

Without fretting over who might ultimately listen to the session, the two set about working on a couple ideas. One of them had all the hallmarks of a B. Lewis song: dreamy, floating synth pads, understated rhythm, a subtly complex chord progression. That idea started to catch and they recorded a vocal melody: a soft, crooning vocal line that creeps upward as the chords resolve underneath.

At the end of the night, they had three or four songs. By then, Lewis had already written hundreds, most of them just sitting in iTunes folders on his computer, labeled by year.

After the writing session, he went right back to working on his own projects and preparing for his next big collaboration.

“It was 2018, and the 50th anniversary of the Dionne Warwick

song ‘Do You Know the Way to San Jose?’” says Brendan Rawson, director of San Jose Jazz. “We were thinking, San Jose is such a different place from what it was 50 years ago. What’s the soundtrack of this region today?”

To answer the question, the organization began a new concert series: “Do You Know San Jose?” In addition to performances by a number of up-and-coming local musicians, the series was to feature an artist in residence, a significant role whose duties included multiple performances, a series of lessons taught to local high school students and the commissioning of a new album. For their first artist in residence, San Jose Jazz set their sights on Lewis.

For Lewis, used to scraping and scrapping for every job he got, the choice was easy.

“Shea just came up to me and was like, ‘You wanna do an album for San Jose Jazz?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, sure.’”

And then he got another call.

“My buddy Jerry, he was like, ‘Yo, I think we got this Kanye cut.”

HUSTLE HARD As mellow as he may seem to the untrained eye, B. Lewis possesses a tireless work ethic, according to those who know him well.

Earlier that week, Kanye had announced a new album over Twitter along with the cover art and a date: “9.29.18.” Everything pointed toward an on-air album release. But that’s not how things went.

“Never came out,” Lewis says.

Instead, at the end of the show, Kanye delivered a pro-Trump sermon to a captive audience, dipping in and

out of song as he told the crowd that white people should get to make Cosby jokes, too, and that everyone should just follow their hearts.

Understandably, Lewis was confused.

“I called my boy and I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ He’s like, ‘I have no fucking idea.’”

Lewis’ connection called Kanye’s people, then called back.

19 all his projects: his mom), he pieced together his first official solo album, Sunset on Carmella. The title captures the bittersweet nature of the moment.

“Carmella Court was where I lived,” Lewis says. “So Sunset on Carmella is like the sun going down on San Jose and rising in LA.”

“He says, ‘It’s not coming out tonight. I guess he’s putting it on hold.

He wants to rewrite some shit.’”

All of this was back when the record was supposed to be called Yandhi. A few months later, Kim Kardashian West announced a new release date: Nov. 23. Like the first release date, that day came and passed with no album.

Over the next 11 months, the new Kanye album was teased repeatedly.

A version of Yandhi leaked, and was even reviewed a few places. Then in January, rather than release the record, Kanye started holding gospel performances billed as “Sunday Service.” In what sounds like a scene from a particularly lazy Simpsons episode, he delivered an Easter Sunday Sunday Service at Coachella.

By then, the album had been renamed. It was no longer Yandhi, with its connotations of intellect and non-violence. Now, draped in hues of gold and royal blue, the album was called Jesus is King. West had become a born-again Christian.

Lewis, on the other hand, had begun to lose faith. For more than a year, he’d been telling people about his track on the new Kanye album. The claim was starting to sound desperate.

“Nobody believed me!” he says.

“I’d been teased with this thing dropping nonstop.”

Luckily, he had other irons in the fire. The record he had done with Falcons the previous year had caught the attention of Electric Feel, the production team behind “Psycho” by Post Malone, “Havana” by Camila Cabello and other big pop hits. Scott Storch worked with them, and Frank Dukes.

“The people on that label are literally the people that he wrote down on that list three years ago,” Modiri says. “Everything was planned for him to be in this spot.”

Electric Feel wanted him to move to LA permanently. Having heard what he was capable of, they wanted him doing sessions yesterday. It had taken a decade, but he was finally where he wanted to be. All that was left to do was submit the album to San Jose Jazz. With the help of his longtime friend (and the secret ear for

SUNSET ON CARMELLA This week, Sunset on Carmella is out on all streaming platforms. In a way, it is the start of B. Lewis’ career: his first album under his own name, with a label behind it. All it took to get here was a decade of work, hundreds of songs and dozens of collaborations.

“For me, nothing was laid out,” he says. “I just kind of found my own way. I ping-ponged around until I found my own sound.”

These days, B. Lewis is no longer a San Jose resident. But sitting over a beer at the SoFA Market in downtown, he can’t help reminiscing.

Towards the end of the interview, he remembers his first paycheck, back when he was still in high school at Valley Christian.

“I worked at a machine shop,” he says. “It only lasted, like, two weeks.

Not because I didn’t like it, but because my friend’s dad, who ran the place, was like, ‘You need to do music.’

I got paid like $180 or something like that. I’m glad I did it, but…”

Here he pauses. The song that had been playing over the loudspeaker has ended, and a new song is just beginning. This one begins with vocals: a soft, crooning line that creeps upward over a strange sounding chord. Together, a pair of voices sing: We began after the storm inside The song is “Everything We Need,”

by Kanye West. The melody, sung by Ty Dolla $ign and Ant Clemons, is the same one Lewis sang, in the version he wrote at a friend’s house back before the move, back before the album and management deal, back before he ever knew any of this was going to happen. “…but I’m doing fine,” Lewis continues, as the chorus ends and the beat kicks in. “I’m doing fine.”

THE 2019 WINE harvest presented many hurdles to local vintners.

However, plenty of winemakers in the Santa Clara Valley are optimistic about the product of a wet winter followed by a long summer, which stretched well into the fall.

The late and protracted season led to a later than usual harvest in many of the state’s winegrowing regions, including the South Valley. But as December rears its head, the season seems to finally be over—ending just as the first major storm of the year rolled in to lash Northern California with wind and rain.

Prudy Foxx, a viticulture consultant familiar with the terroir of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Clara Valley says that 2019 looks good overall, even if late heat waves caused some cluster shrivel across the region.

“I think the whites are fantastic this year,” she says, adding that “some of the heavier reds, like cabernet and Rhones, really benefited from long hang time and slow ripening.”

John Aver of Aver Family Vineyards in Gilroy finally brought in cinsault, mourvedre and petite sirah. “I like the quality of the fruit, and acids and sugars seemed very balanced for the most part, but our yields were down slightly,” he says of 2019.

Vic Vanni of Solis Winery—also based in Gilroy—shared Aver’s positive outlook. Vanni picked his last cabernet and sangiovese on Nov. 1. “The crop is about 30 percent more than average and great quality,” he says. “We had a relatively cool summer and mild fall with unusually cool nighttime temperatures the last couple of weeks.”

Sandy Moller of Satori Cellars is also looking forward to her 2019 vintage.

“It was a little lighter harvest than times past,” she says, “but the quality of the fruit was outstanding. We picked each varietal at its perfect balance.”

And while Kim Englehart of Lion Ranch Vineyards & Winery in San Martin had a bumpy season on account of equipment issues, she is excited to introduce some new varietals to her winery’s lineup.

“We heard from some in the area about high mildew pressure, but we’ve had no issues using our organic schedule,” Englehart says, adding: “We now grow all eight of the red Chateauneuf du Pape varietals.”

SOUTHERN REACH Fine dining restaurant ASA Los Altos has expanded south, opening a new location in Los Gatos. ASA LOS GATOS replaces the now defunct Grill 57.

The expansion specializes in upscale American cuisine with a heaping side of Italian and Spanish influence. Try their paellas and their liberty duck confit with rhubarb compote and huckleberry-raspberry sauce. Their craft cocktails are also a must-try. The Asa G&T is made with Fords Gin, Carpano Bianco Vermouth, Fever Tree Tonic, edible flowers, grapefruit and juniper berries. Reservations are recommended.

EPALESE FOOD CAN be a bit of a mystery to diners. Is it Chinese? Is it Indian? The answer: yes. One of the original fusions, Nepalese food was born in Nepal, as trade routes turned the landlocked country into a delicious nexus for Chinese, Indian and Tibetan cuisine.

Nepal’s most popular culinary export is most certainly the momo, which is a tasty steamed dumpling filled with savory and spicy goodies, such as chicken, pork and vegetarianfriendly options.

While there are numerous momo trucks and pop-ups throughout the South Bay, brick-and-mortar locations are still rare. Enter MOMO GRILL, which began as a food truck and recently opened their first storefront in Saratoga.

The menu at Momo Grill boasts a number of fresh creations—including a fried chicken momo, which is as good as one might imagine. Its crisp exterior gave way to a savory chicken filling, and even featured a touch of broth, reminiscent of a Chinese XLB There are also Chinese and Indian options on the menu. The lamb roganjosh was particularly good, but be warned—the spice level is as advertised: hot!

HOUSE ROAST Despite closing their Downtown San Jose location earlier this year, CHROMATIC COFFEE opened a coffee bar at their roastery last month, in the same complex that houses Hapa’s Brewing Company. Located just a few miles north of Downtown Willow Glen on Lincoln Avenue, this is where the magic happens—from the actual roasting of the beans to the packaging.

Co-founder and coffee guru Hiver van Geenhoven says the new location has a few features that should excite coffee lovers, including some tech for their roasters that tracks the changing colors of the beans in real time, as well as a Voga Coffee machine that makes pour-over quality coffee at the same price as drip.

“We’re one of only three coffee houses in the Bay with this tech!” he exclaims.

This new location will also feature baked goodies from Manresa Bread, public cuppings every Thursday at 11am and offer classes on brewing and latte art.

The South Bay seems to be the place for Japanese ramen houses seeking to expand in the States. Last year saw acclaimed Ramen Nagi open its first two American locations in Palo Alto and Santa Clara; this year saw the equally revered AFURI RAMEN + DUMPLINGS open their second American location here in Cupertino (the first was in Portland). Their yuzu shio ramen is particularly tasty. It’s made with a clear chicken broth called “chintan,” which is simmered just below boiling to give it a clear and light flavor.

ADEGA EXPANDS Adega—San Jose’s first restaurant to earn a Michelin star—opened a brandnew bakery, PASTELARIA ADEGA, late last month in the heart of downtown San Jose. Taking a page out of Manresa’s playbook, the new location will specialize in quality Portugese baked goods, such as bread, cakes and other confections. Their pastel de nata (or Portugese egg tart) is the essential item here. It has a crispy exterior and soft and sweet custardy center.

SHORT STOP Popular south San Jose BBQ joint, TAOB PIT STOP, will be closing their restaurant for the remainder of the year and probably into early next year to complete some kitchen renovations and upgrades. However, the catering side of the operation will still be open for business, and there’s also a possibility that they might be bringing the Pit Stop to several cities as a pop-up while the renovations are underway.

Gordon is a big fan of Austen’s work; this is the third of her novels that he’s adapted for the stage. Pride and Prejudice, which runs through Jan. 4, is directed by TheatreWorks’ founding artistic director Robert Kelley, who is stepping down at the end of the company’s current 50th season. (MS)

It’s unclear if musicians Alex Abalos, Mike Boo, Michael Reed and Marcus Stephens—who together form the Bay Areabased avant-electro-jazz outfit Secret Sidewalk—have named their project in homage to this stoner mecca, but their beautifully strange tunes would certainly provide an ideal soundtrack for a psychedelic journey through the East Bay foothills. Stronger Vessel SJMA hosts Woody De Othello’s new solo show, ‘Breathing Room’

HE ELECTRIC LIGHT switches and sockets on the gallery walls are ceramic trompe l'oeils.

Woody De Othello glazed them to catch and then trick the eye.

Up close, you can see that they’re misshapen. Like the other sculptures in “Breathing Room,” his solo show at the San Jose Museum of Art, De Othello’s work suggests the presence of a real-world object.

But the final product, whether it recalls a radiator or an air conditioning unit, is deliberately cast to appear off-kilter. He animates the inanimate, capturing

things in the act of inhaling, exhaling or holding their breath.

A few museum-goers scribbled their impressions of his work down on special notepads offering lowtech feedback to the artist. One anonymous visitor wrote, “Some of your work is nightmare-ish. I love it!

Then I read about your intent and saw it in a totally different light." I met with the artist in his El Cerrito studio to talk about his intentions, “nightmare-ish” or otherwise.

“There are two different things that are apparent in the show,” De Othello says. “One of them is riffing off of this anthropomorphic type of domestic object that breathes.” He’s referring to

an AC unit, a space heater and an air purifier. These machines control the temperature and the environment by circulating air. The artist is meditating on the way we breathe inside the controlled environments of our homes and public spaces.

But in a piece like Passive Prayer Inverse, the human body is contorted to form tortuous poses. Arms and hands twist unnaturally behind a head or cover up a face to hide an expression of shame or anguish.

“You turn on the news and listen to something traumatic and sad,” he explains, “and then you might have something heavy in your personal life on top of that.” De Othello believes that this “vessel” work, which isn’t based on a representational object, contains “the sediment of those negative feelings.”

He believes that these distorted sculptures of the human form come from a more intuitive place than the breathing machines. De Othello also says that the terms “vessel” and “figure” are becoming more interchangeable for him. In fact, his works look like a cross between the two concepts, as if a

figurative sculpture had devolved and become an odd vase.

The center of gravity in Getting In My Own Way, Self-Imposed Blockades is a giant red foot. De Othello drapes an elongated arm and hand over the single leg, adding in an enormous ear that blooms just above the ankle. He might have melted down a caryatid’s face and torso to create it. But the artist has blasted away any suggestion of a coherent human soul. Instead, he extracts a traumatic moment from the subject’s psychic life and freezes it in place. Still, he maintains, it’s “the material that dictates what it wants me to do.”

Sometimes the original idea starts with a drawing. But once he starts to shape it, “the clay wants to do something else.” De Othello says he opens up “to this communication with the clay.”

“Breathing Room” also includes three of his gorgeous acrylic and gouache paintings. Their melting interiors are clearly connected to the sculptures, but the stories they tell can stand on their own. The vivid oranges, reds and pinks complete the psychological profile of the sculptures.

They give us a glimpse of the daydream, or the vision, behind all of those unhappy, mangled limbs.

You can draw a quavering, emotional line from the tangled flesh in Self Image to the oozing black viscera of Defeated, depleted. Neither the painting nor the sculpture depicts an intact face. The painter of the self portrait is kinder to his subject. He includes a vase of flowers in order to soften the blow of the distress we’re seeing. The body lacks any bone structure. It coils around itself like a sleeping salamander.

De Othello acknowledges that Defeated, depleted is an expression of feeling overwhelmed. But he banishes the feeling into a vessel. “Breathing Room” contains many of his anxieties.

The exhibit is also a reminder of how he contends with them.

“You can't really control when your body and your mind is low,” he says. “But to be aware of it, and pause, that’s the only way to get through it.”

It’s Complicated Things fall apart in Noah Baumbach’s latest film, ‘Marriage Story’

ESPITE THE FOLK wisdom, marriage doesn’t have a 50 percent chance of failing. Variables—like region, religion and so forth— indicate that the pass-fail rate is more like 40 to 50 percent.

Apparently people like those kind of odds.

In Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, an anguished husband named Charlie (Adam Driver) notices a throw pillow in the office of his saber-toothed LA divorce lawyer, Jay (Ray Liotta). It’s embroidered with the words “Eat, Drink and Remarry.”

Looking for repeat business?

Baumbach previously directed The

Squid and the Whale, about the tumult between a divorced pair (Laura Linney, Jeff Daniels); if there are similar autobiographical elements here, it proves we cannot learn from our parents’ mistakes. In voiceover, Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) is reading a note about all the things she loves about her husband—the way he came out of a troubled Midwestern background and became “more New Yorker than New Yorkers,” Charlie is a theatrical director, a magnet for talent… but this apparent love note was composed as part of a counselling program carried out just before the divorce. Now the two are fuming in the office of an overlyjeweled male therapist who displays books with titles like Why? and Woe.

The idea is that if Nicole could write down the reasons she married Charlie in the first place, it’ll make the exit graceful. No such luck.

The quarrel between this couple, which comes to a wall-punching, window-rattling fight, is represented by the same split that was in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall. (No surprise; Allen is a huge influence on Baumbach). He’s a serious New Yorker, she’s LA born and bred; her mother (the ageless Julie Haggerty) was an actress, as is her sister (Nurse Jackie’s Merrit Wever, very funny). The split becomes irrevocable when Nicole gets a role on a TV show that sounds awfully like Avatar, leaving Charlie to try to take his production of Electra to Broadway.

This leaves custody battles for their kid Henry (Azhy Robertson) who is not above a bit of manipulation in dealing with his fractured parents.

Baumbach finds new depths in his performers, in the wounded, frightened side in Driver, and the macho side in Johansson; she’s quite small, but formidable in a boy’s haircut and trousers. The passing of various Halloweens gives this film a sense of time going by. In one year,

she’s dressed up as Let’s Dance era Bowie: the 1983 edition, from the year before Johansson was born.

The shape of Marriage Story is problematic—episodes were good enough for Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage, back even before Netflix existed. In installment form, the story wouldn’t have seemed to have peaked too early with the Strindbergian fight between Nicole and Charlie in the bare, beige divorce apartment he’s taken up. (It’s a perfect set, every New Yorker’s nightmare of such a place: window slats like prison bars, too sunny and nowhere to walk to—just as a roachy, walled in Manhattan noisebox would be any Angelino’s nightmare).

Bitter-comic relief comes in from the hired hands. Laura Dern is wonderfully scary-sexy in that ghastly LA industry style, where you have to keep dressing like you’re 20 deep into your 50s. Dern plays Nora, Nicole’s lawyer; she has a speech about the historical newness of the idea of the “perfect father.” that’ll get her to the Oscars.

Alan Alda is very warm as Bert, a shabbier, palsied lawyer Charlie hires for a time—a mensch, but he ends up costing Charlie $25,000. Bert is honest about the Kafka-style contradictions of what a court looks for in a father.

Less showy but just as funny is Texan stand-up comedienne Martha Kelly as the observer hired by the court to examine Charlie’s place. She’s on some unnerving extraterrestrial wavelength, and gives one more rendition of the running gag about why LA is superior to NYC (“the space!...”)

Marriage Story is authentic about the tragedy of the situation, when the person wounding you is the person to whom (once upon a time) you’d first look to for solace. The bond between Charlie and Nicole endures at the end, in a matched pair of songs from Sondheim’s Company—one at an LA family party, the other at a Broadway bar (who knew Kylo Ren could sing?) Marriage Story would be the worst first date movie, ever, but more seasoned couples can see it and huddle for comfort.

IVEN THE CURRENT popularity of midcentury decor, it isn’t hard to find a bar with an interior design like The Branham Lounge.

Hues of deep mahogany and burgundy blend effortlessly with the leather-upholstered chairs. It’s easy to imagine Don Draper knocking back a few in this dimly lit South Side watering hole.

However, while plenty of popular drinking establishments have adopted this same aesthetic in order to appeal to the

millennial milieu, The Branham Lounge has been rocking some version of this look for half a century. And this Saturday, the bar will celebrate 50 years with some seriously retro all-day drink specials.

“A lot of bars these days are made to look this way,” says Tony Riffis, co-owner of The Branham Lounge. His bar, by contrast, simply hasn’t changed all that much since it first opened its doors in the fall of 1969—in a shopping center anchored by one of the first Orchard Supply Hardware stores (the space is now occupied by a Sprouts).

Riffis took over operations of Branham with his business partners—

husband and wife Matt and Desta Price—about two and a half years ago. In that time, they’ve worked to maintain and elevate everything that has made the bar a communal hub for the past 50 years, while simultaneously keeping up with changing tastes. That means keeping things simple for the daytime and afternoon crowds then turning up the volume at night.

The day starts with “the best happy hour in the South Bay—hands down.”

That runs from 10am to 7pm every day and draws mostly older regulars, some of whom actually worked at Branham back in the ’70s. It was a union bar back then and all the bartenders and cocktail waitresses actually wore uniforms.

The lounge then sees a surge in professionals who come in to catch the tail end of happy hour.

This group eventually blends with the late-night crowd, which skews younger. That’s when DJs start spinning, the dance floor opens up, revelers pile into the photo booth and bartenders serve more of Branham’s craftier options, like their barrel-aged Manhattan.

In addition to booking “the biggest names we can,” which have previously including DJ Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys, Riffis is also willing to try less conventional events. He has plans to host a “meat raffle,” which is exactly what it sounds like.

“You pull a number, spin the wheel and you can walk out with at T-bone steak or a lobster tail,” he explains.

“They’re really big in the Midwest.”

Riffis invites anyone and everyone to mark his bar’s 50th year on Dec. 7 by enjoying select 69-cent drinks all day, in honor of the bar’s 1969 founding. An open fondue bar will be available from 2pm-6pm.

DJ Rocky Rock, known for his work in The Black Eyed Peas and Sublime, will be on the decks from 9pm to close.

DEC 4–12 | “RAIN, MIDNIGHT RAIN, NOTHING BUT THE WILD RAIN / ON THIS BLEAK HUT, AND SOLITUDE, AND ME.” The recent change in weather, while welcome, has led me to the warmth of isolation, a familiar old friend. Edward Thomas’s poem “Rain” goes into that dark, narrow midnight, as rain comes, and the sun, like everything else, is on the other side of the world.

One of the best reasons to head into downtown San Jose on First Fridays is the incredible musical energy of Howard Wiley and the Nappy Roots at Cafe Stritch. Truly a gift to usher in the first weekend of the month. I once saw a guy injure his neck by bobbing it too hard.

Might want to stretch first… Saturday night is the 50th Anniversary of Branham Lounge with DJ Rocky Rock. It’s so cool to see a South Bay establishment reach such a milestone.

I’ve been dating this really great woman for three months. She’s just decided that she needs to be single right now, despite our forming a pretty strong connection. She explained that she really, really likes me, but she’s never been single for very long and thinks it's best for her at the moment. I can respect that. She also says we can keep sleeping together if I want. I want to do that, but I’m wondering: Could that ruin our chances of having a real relationship again in the future?—Wanna Play It Smart People give you a reason for their behavior.

It may not be the real reason. Like, I’d tell somebody, “So sorry...got a work thing!” and not, “I’d shave off my eyebrows to get out of your 8-year-old’s oboe recital.”

There’s a good chance you’ve been demoted from boyfriend to emergency penis. Research by evolutionary psychologist Joshua Duntley suggests that we evolved to cultivate backup mates— plan B partners we can quickly pivot to in case a partner ditches us or dies in a freak accident. The problem is “the scarcity principle.” Psychologist Robert Cialdini explains that we value what’s scarce or out of reach, fearing that we’ll lose access to it. In fact, the desirability of the very same person or thing often increases or decreases according to shifts in its perceived accessibility. (Picture Denny’s with a velvet rope and a scary bouncer instead of “Open 24 hours! Seat yourself!”)

Once your value is perceived to be low, there might not be much chance of rehabbing it. So it might pay to find other sex partners and give this woman a chance to miss you. It ultimately serves your purpose better than turning yourself into the man version of those freezedried food packs sold for earthquake or apocalypse prep kits: delicious like seasoned particle board but just the thing while you’re waiting for rescue in the remains of your office building with nothing to eat but your arm.

My boyfriend recently proposed to me. I’ve gotten to thinking that if I’d never worn braces, he wouldn’t have been interested in me. I had a terrible underbite.

Allay your fears by being honest: Tell your fiance that you got braces to correct a really bad underbite. A dude who’s attracted to the way you look now is unlikely to dump you upon learning about your supposedly sordid orthodontic history. Looks are vital for attraction, but they’re just part of what matters. A massive cross-cultural survey by evolutionary psychologist David Buss finds that men, like women, prioritize kindness and intelligence in a partner. In fact, these are men’s and women’s top asks. And these are things that can’t be engineered with $7K in oral railroad tracks and years spent covering your mouth when you laugh lest those tiny rubber bands shoot across the room and put out somebody’s eye.
