Once this news outlet exposed claims of sexual misconduct and discrimination

While officials from South Bay cities expressed shock and dismay at the allegations, they came as no surprise to the County of Santa Clara, which only decided to reconsider its ties to DST after the critical publicity.

County Supervisor JOE SIMITIAN and Office of Supportive Housing Director KY LE heard about the troubling accusations from former DST employee ZIA MACWILLIAMS back in May. Fly learned just a few days ago that the county struck up a one-year deal with DST anyway, hiring the non-profit as part of an $860,000 initiative to help CalFresh recipients find jobs.

Ly failed to mention that when we asked him about any pending DST allocations.

“Is there a pending contract with DST?” we asked on Oct. 7, the day Ly finally emailed us back. “No,” he replied. “We had been working on a contract with DST for a culinary training program, but last week, DST withdrew.”

Technically, he was right. When Ly responded, exactly 10 days after our request, there were no pending contracts because the CalFresh partnership was signed and sealed three days prior.

LoPresti excused the mix-up. “This is a separate contract from the one Mr. [Ly] was communicating with you about,” LoPresti said, “and we are actively reviewing our options with regards to this contract in light of the allegations against DST’s leadership.”

Bill Wilson Center CEO Rents Room to Homeless Student

BY GRACE HASE A mini fridge, blackout curtains and a microwave were just a few of the items on Sparky Harlan’s holiday shopping list—but they weren’t gifts for friends or family members. Rather, the Bill Wilson Center CEO needed them to prepare a spare room in her house for college students with no place else to go.

Just a week before Christmas, Harlan’s first tenant, a San Jose State computer science major named Abdul, moved in as part of a broader initiative by the Bill Wilson Center, Airbnb and local colleges to offer free lodging to homeless students. With the help of a $250,000 state grant, the Santa Clarabased Bill Wilson Center will cover the cost and book rooms for homeless college students on the short-term rentals website.

But with a goal of housing 100 homeless students in 100 days, Harlan said she felt the need to step up and lead by example. “If I want other people to put up their spare bedrooms

to help homeless college students, I should do that also,” she said.

Santa Clara County’s homeless population has reached staggering numbers in the last few years. A 2019 point-in-time census found 9,706 homeless residents on the county’s streets in January—an increase of more than 20 percent since the same time in 2017.

As for college students, a recent survey found that 22 percent of homeless respondents in San Jose between ages 18 and 25 were enrolled in college. But the time between quarters or semesters leaves students particularly vulnerable, as libraries have shortened hours and many other school facilities close. “Over the winter break [we’re] making sure students don’t end up homeless during this four-week period when classes end and begin again,” Harlan said.

In Abdul’s case, his roommate recently graduated, leaving him

in a last-minute bind to find a place to stay. The quick turnover of apartments for college students is something that Harlan said is becoming increasingly common.

“They sleep in their cars or they start trying to couch surf,” she explained.

“There’s just a lot of this very on-theedge student population out there.

I think that’s why you have some of the colleges saying, ‘We don’t see the homelessness you’re talking about,’ because it’s not how you normally define a homeless population.”

Since the Bill Wilson Center kicked off its 100-day challenge on Nov. 4, Catherine Voss Plaxton—SJSU’s interim associate vice president of student services—said the collaboration has served 37 students.

“With the capacity we have built through partnerships like the 100day challenge, we have more tools to address student housing needs beyond on-campus housing,” she said.

Police Still Investigating SJ Candidate’s Car Crash

BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH Police are still investigating a Dec. 16 car crash in which a San Jose City Council candidate fatally struck a pedestrian by Blossom Hill Elementary School in Los Gatos.

According to the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department, Jenny Higgins Bradanini—who’s running against Matt Mahan and Helen Wang for Councilman Johnny Khamis’ District 10 seat—was headed to a doctor’s appointment at about 11:40am that day when she rammed her SUV into Timothy Starkey, a 66-year-old Santa Cruz man.

Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Sgt. Jamie Fields said on Monday that the incident is still under review, that no arrest has been made and that a cause has yet to be determined.

She declined to disclose whether distracted driving played a role.

Higgins Bradanini, who expressed condolences to Starkey’s family last week, has been taking time off from her campaign to deal with the fallout of the tragedy.

Her campaign manager Eric Stroker said he has no updates to offer at this time.

Meanwhile, Starkey’s friends have

started a fundraiser for his widow, Kathleen Starkey. As of early Monday afternoon, a GoFundMe campaign for the Starkeys garnered $7,500 of its $10,000 goal from 48 donors.

“Tim Starkey brought so much joy to the lives around him and had a heart of gold,” GoFundMe campaign creator Carrie Coffee Ziemer wrote on the site.

“Tim shared his sense of humor with everyone he encountered and was happiest cooking a meal during the holidays or a Sunday night dinner with a curated soundtrack.”

Ziemer invited people to share “fond memories” of Starkey on the page, in addition to financial help for his surviving loved ones.

“The Starkey family is grieving with family and friends while also working through the repercussions of the accident and loss of Tim,” Ziemer wrote.

“The family has had a tremendous amount of love and support offered to them and has a long and difficult journey ahead. In order to help ease the stress of the financial burden that lies ahead, we have created this fund for Kathleen, Bridget and Joe. They are so grateful for the love, support and contributions from their village.”

N A CHILLY downtown San Jose morning, Kristi Yamaguchi is reading from her children’s book, Cara’s Kindness, in front of the ice rink that bears her name. Several lowincome students, first- and second-graders from the Hubbard Media Arts Academy in the Alum Rock Union School District, sit on metal benches in front of her.

that resembles an Alaska Airlines plane since that company helps support both the ice rink and the Hubbard Program, the latter of which happens in partnership with the San Jose Public Library Foundation. Vertical Alaska Airlines banners on stands flank the stage area where Kristi sits, as well as the back railing behind the seating area. The wind is kicking in big time.

On the table behind the kids I see gummy bears and Nature Valley granola bars, plus necessary containers of hot chocolate. Within moments, a gnarly wind knocks over the Alaska banners,

and as the airline PR people scramble to pick them up, all the kids remain glued to Kristi’s words. No one will let the temperamental weather ruin their fun. Plus, we don’t get to see an Olympic gold medalist read from her own book in this neighborhood very often, especially one so dedicated to making sure underprivileged kids have access to books—a very worthy cause.

I am flooded with gratitude just standing in the back and watching the event. Since my mom was a career librarian who raised me in libraries and taught me to read at age 2, all of which built a foundation that probably saved me from darker paths later in life, any effort that increases children’s literacy, or supports reading or even just access to libraries, gets my support. Too many people underestimate the positive influence of libraries on kids.

Yet Kristi is not the only local skating legend participating in the event. Santa Clara native Polina Edmunds, who represented the United States at the 2014 Winter

Olympics in Sochi and won silver medals in two US National Competitions, also shows up to read for the kids. In Polina’s case, she reads from All You Need is Love, a children’s book based on the Lennon-McCartney tune of the same name. The song lyrics accompany illustrations by Marc Rosenthal.

Polina reads the lyrics and flips through the pages for the kids to see.

Also present is KNTV news anchor Jessica Aguirre, who reads from “You’re My Little Christmas Wish.”

The readings unfold in two sessions. The first group of kids listens to the women celebrities read while the other half migrates over to the SJ Public Library’s Maker Spaceship, which is parked along Market Street in front of the ice rink. A 39-foot bus converted into a mobile technology workshop equipped with three solar panels and running on renewable diesel, the Maker Spaceship includes laptops, 3D printers, laser cutters, desktop CNC telescopes, video production suites and much more. It’s designed to help kids to learn about STEMrelated activities and overcome any obstacles they might have with technology. It’s a rocking piece of work. If you think library resources are limited to books on shelves, well, step into the 21st century. Please.

Eventually, Polina then performs on the ice with several children, including Kristi’s daughter, after which Kristi herself takes to the ice and shows many of the kids how to skate, or at least balance themselves.

The Sharks mascot, SJ Sharkie, eventually shows up to join in, as does someone in a Santa costume, although the kids seem way more interested in Sharkie. When the mascot has to leave, the kids are bummed out.

Before, during and after all of this, newscasters, print reporters and city employees invade the scene to take gratuitous selfies with Kristi, as always. Since I’m a back-of-the-class kind of dude, I keep my distance, but as I watch the event unfold, I look across the ice rink at the San Jose Museum of Art, the building that used to be the San Jose Public Library, where my mom worked in the 1960s, before I came along.

Internal forces are showing me the power of libraries and the effects of gratitude. And it’s working.

TAYING IN BED all year is not an option for most of us, but if you felt like doing that in 2019, we get it. Recent decades have ended on more hopeful notes—the dotcom frenzy and the inauguration of Barack Obama defined the previous two years that ended with nine. Songs struck a more positive note as well. The end of 1999 brought us Rob Thomas’ “Smooth” and ten years later “Boom Boom Pow” advised us that we were so 2000 and late—and to get on with “that future boom boom boom.”

What coal nugget landed in this year’s stocking? The inescapable, twisted “Bad Guy,” an ode to puffed-chest criminality embodied in the shameless name callers and ass slappers that seem to have infected everything from Hollywood’s couches and presidential tweets to marathon finish lines.

Kumbaya optimism and the mobile computing power that surged at the decade’s onset gave way to a crude devolution. The promise of digital democratization spreading Arab Spring-style liberation and global prosperity crumbled faster than Greenland’s Ice Sheet. Somehow, the oligarchs, despots and climate change deniers won the decade.

And so it goes. If we can’t drain the swamp, we’ll celebrate it. In that spirit, we bring you our annual compendium of bad actors and ignominious events that fill the ink smeared pages of The Year in Review.

But despite the slacktivism and clicktivism and viral awareness-raising campaigns, the internet galvanized some real movements this past decade. Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter started with people on the streets, but the latter endured past its flashpoint with the Ferguson protests in 2014 by amplifying its message online. A few years later, #MeToo actually built up momentum through millions of coming-out stories of sexual harassment and assault and then poured into the streets at the Women’s March.

The Decade When Reality Became a Niche Did you hear about the lottery winner who shat on her boss’ desk before quitting her job? Or how the FBI confirmed that George Soros funded the migrant caravan? Both stories have gone viral, reaching millions of readers on Facebook.

And both, of course, are complete and utter fabrications.

The deliberate faking of stories to mislead or amuse is nothing new. But the advent of social media has proved the line oft attributed to Winston Churchill, that “a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.”

Just a few years ago, the term “fake news” was meaningless. Today, according to a Pew Research Center study, Americans consider it a bigger problem than climate change, terrorism and racism.

Silicon Valley made it so easy to propagate false information and only recently began taking tentative steps to rein in the force it unleashed. But there’s a profit motive to maintain the status quo, which casts doubt on the lengths social media companies will go to make good on their promises.

Facebook is free and generates revenue by selling ads, which are valued based on how many users arrive at pages. And nothing keeps users more engaged on Facebook than provocative clickbait about fluoride turning frogs gay.

But there’s more at risk than an uninformed electorate. While throwing the term “fake news” around damages public discourse here in the US, it poses an existential threat to people gathering news in Egypt, Turkey, Somalia, Cameroon and under other authoritarian regimes. As 2019 comes to a close, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, there are at least 30 journalists in jail worldwide on charges of “false news.”

The Decade of Trolling As 2009 rolled into 2010, we were entertained and outraged in equal measure by the upstart media startups who had mastered the new digital tools of storytelling. Platforms like Gawker and Vice tickled an entire generation’s cynical sensibility, getting a rise out of stuffed shirts and exposing the hypocrisy of political leaders in the process. The Daily Show, which had long excelled in lampooning beltway bureaucrats, hit its stride, taking on a gravitas that scarcely could have been imagined when Craig Kilbourne first sat at the anchor’s desk.

But the sardonic, winking voice of publications like Gawker and Vice— which initially promised to root out the problematic structure of traditional point-counterpoint journalism—was co-opted by corporate brands, propagandist trolls and mainstream media itself. Comedy news, once primarily a tool of liberals, was adopted by conservatives, then by the far right.

In 2016, a man who launched his political career by trolling President Barack Obama was elected to the highest office of the land. Donald Trump is the decade’s biggest troll. A master of sticky, schoolyard taunts and brazen gaslighting, he continues to undermine norms and erode checks on executive power, dodging challenges at every turn with the troll’s familiar refrain: Just kidding. Why so serious?

The Decade of Streaming Media The past 10 years have been a particularly fast-moving time for the recorded media industry. Just as we finally gave up on CDs in favor of MP3s, traded in our DVD players for Blu-ray compatible machines and truly mastered our Netflix queues, everything was thrown out the window once more. The next generation of music fans will save serious hard drive space by streaming the majority of their music on services like Spotify. Even iTunes, the Apple service that effectively killed compact discs, is being phased out to make way for streamingonly Apple Music. Fortunately, all that space we’re saving by donating our DVDs and Blu-rays will come in handy, since vinyl records continue to grow as an in-demand medium for listening to music at home. Go figure.

OLD WEATHER BEGS for a warm cocktail. Hot toddies, Irish coffees, hot buttered rum— these seasonal favorites are well known for good reason. But the depth of warm cocktails is vast. Let’s dive into these warm winter wonders and get you up to speed on what to expect when ordering one.

There is a lot of science behind why a hot drink is so delicious.

A mug of hot coffee or hot tea in the morning can set the tone for your whole day. A hot drink

soothes a sore throat, warms up cold hands and helps to regulate body temperature. As far as warm cocktails go, the formula is similar to any other—start with a spirit, add something sweet and then something to counterbalance that sweetness. When alcohol is warm, the volatile notes of the ethanol can sting the nose, so most warm drinks are rich, bold or elongated to help minimize those effects.

One of the first warm drinks I ever tried was the hot toddy. Although I didn’t have a definitive recipe for one until a few years ago, I found a few common items all hot toddies must have: whiskey, lemon, sweetener and hot water. Some common flavoring

elements added to a hot toddy are cinnamon, cloves, bitters, ginger or even tea as the hot element. I prefer to use a honey-ginger syrup and a little bit of an allspice liqueur as the sweetener.

Most bars that have piping-hot water can accomplish this drink, but it isn’t always guaranteed. Before ordering a hot toddy, ask the bartender.

The Irish coffee is also well known, but often confused for many other builds. Most believe the simple addition of Irish whiskey to coffee makes it Irish. Some say mixing your java with an Irish cream liqueur like Baileys makes it an Irish coffee.

However, the hands-down best preparation of the drink I’ve had comes from the birthplace of modern Irish coffee: the Buena Vista Cafe in San Francisco. I don’t have the column space to get into the dozens of places that claim to have invented the drink, but Buena Vista has been making this drink the same way since the early 1950s.

The recipe for the Irish coffee is simple, but the preparation makes the difference. Add a shot of a quality Irish whiskey to a preheated glass, then add a teaspoon of sugar

(a half-ounce of simple syrup works as well). Once the sugar is dissolved, add hot coffee, then top with freshly whipped cream.

The fresh cream is the secret here.

You can prepare this very simply.

Add an amount of heavy cream to a mason jar, cap it, then shake it vigorously until it nearly doubles in volume. It will still be pourable, but the added air will allow it to float on top of the drink when poured over the back of a spoon.

Another hot drink go-to for the holidays is the Tom & Jerry. This cocktail dates back to the early 1800s and it is something like a warm eggnog. A batter is made with separated eggs, sugar, vanilla and a little bit of magic. The cocktail itself is typically a mix of dark rum, brandy, batter and hot milk. Due to its labor-intensive preparation, it is not a common drink to find in a bar, but that doesn’t stop our friends at Haberdasher. They only serve the Tom & Jerry for a few days a year.

This time around,they’ll be mixing the drink Dec. 25-29, so get them while you can. Haberdasher is also featuring a selection of hot toddies through the middle of January.

Lastly, my current favorite warm cocktail to have around the holiday is a simple add-this-to-that kind of preparation—which is exactly the type of drink I usually try to make more complicated. However, this one is just perfect on its own: Chartreuse and hot chocolate.

Chartreuse is a French herbal liqueur that is extremely complex in flavor, with sweet, savory and spicy notes.

A few years back a friend of mine introduced it to me, and I haven’t had a holiday season without making some since. This certainly isn’t easy to find in a bar, either, but try making it at home on a cold night when you’re looking to get cozy.

However, it is clear that Zomboy takes great care in constructing his sonic assaults— fussing over every pitch-bent squeal—and making sure to balance out the mayhem with melody. Squalls of fuzzy noise and dadaist drum collages give way rich and dramatic piano passages, which might have been plucked directly from the Andrew Lloyd Webber songbook. (MS)

Marshmello and Deadmau5 have both revealed themselves, but the world of bass music still has one well-known, anonymous DJproducer duo—and despite what they recently led fans to believe, it will stay that way… for now.

ATLiens promised an unmask back in August, but the “reveal” turned out to be a troll, with DJs Hekler and Marauda standing in. Despite keeping a low profile, the pair continues to amass a following, and quickly. Their heavy beats have even been featured in a phone commercial. When Santa Clara Valley Brewing opened in 2015, CEO Tom Clark declared that San Jose needed more breweries. Four years later, downtown is beer-soaked and SVBC is closing its doors. Friday is last call for the brewery. Over the course of its short lifespan, SVBC racked up numerous awards, including a silver medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival for its Alviso Mills hefeweizen.

Clark and his partner Steve Donohoe named their beers after Santa Clara Valley locations and landmarks; their flagship Electric Tower IPA will be pouring until the bitter, hoppy end. (MS)

No surprise that these seasoned players would have an idea of what they want to do with their sound, as their love of heavy rock spans about four decades. ColdClaw’s second full-length, Anti-Martyr: Decades to Suffer, released in September, crosses both these subgenres to dabble in hardcore and thrash for a strangely addictive new sound from a band that seems eager to subvert expectations. (MS)

East Bay trio Beats Antique is all about giving audiences what they want—that is, of course, if they happen to want a smart and snakey blend of Middle Eastern folk and downtempo electronica, with lots of belly dancing. These guys bring an anything-goes chaos to the stage, mashing up and mixing from a dizzying variety of sources. Dancer and percussionist Zoe Jakes is, in fact, at the center of this band’s live performances. Just like her musical collaborators, Jakes throws a lot into the artistic blender— everything from traditional belly dancing to Balinese—to present even more compelling evidence that our world is getting smaller every day. Front & Center Jordan Casteel upends centuries of erasure with ‘Returning the Gaze’

T

HE HISTORY OF portraiture—in my experience of it—is a whole bunch of dead white people.”

That’s an excerpt from a video interview with the artist Jordan Casteel. It plays at the tail end of her Cantor Arts Center exhibit “Returning the Gaze.” In nearly every one of the paintings on display, the subjects of her portraits, mostly male, train their eyes on the viewer.

Her response to the history of white portraiture includes a series of intense stares from black men who are very much alive and well.

Casteel also believes that black

men and their bodies have been, and continue to be, explicitly “criminalized, villainized and sexualized” throughout history and in the media. By showing men who command the space they’re inhabiting, “Returning the Gaze” is her way of creating a counternarrative. Her first subjects were her classmates in school (Casteel graduated with an MFA from the Yale School of Art). But after moving to Harlem, she found new subjects in the people she encountered every day.

“Usually it’s someone who’s standing off to the side. I’ve had an inclination toward seeing people who might easily be unseen,” she says. The large canvases (up to 90-by-78 inches) are meant to

rival the “Old Master” style. Where black men and women have been omitted from those narratives, Casteel poses them front and center. Not only are they visible, but each subject carries the emotional impact of a short story or poem. In her paintings, the dead white people may or may not even exist.

If they do, they live well beyond the borders of her frames and perspectives.

Her approach to skin color can, on occasion, also depart from classical approaches to an oil’s approximation of real flesh tones. Galen 2 (2014) is the deepest shade of emerald green. He sits, naked, on a white folding chair in his kitchen. His body faces sideways, against a radiator and toward a refrigerator. His head though is turned outward to meet the painter. He stares at her with a faint question mark in his eyes. Galen trusts her but wonders what the end result will look like. Will he recognize himself on the checkerboard floor and its distorted reflection that gleams against the oven door behind him?

of a bed. Jojo’s socks match his face, but the monster muppet in his hands is a contrasting green. Without any factual information, you can infer that they’re brothers. Casteel captures their characters but then goes on to fill the canvas in with telling details about their home. Jojo sits on a round patterned cushion as his head drifts toward his older brother’s. A painting also rests against a wall. Its presence suggests that there's another narrative nestled somewhere inside the main plot of blues.

In a series of bold works, Casteel paints several nudes, but of men in their own skin colors. Ato, Yahya and Elijah’s bodies (all from 2014) are young, fit and appear in various shades of brown. They’re not chaste paintings. You can make out the muscular curvature of buttocks, biceps and pectorals. But they’re sensual rather than sexual. She admires their bodies but doesn’t forsake their souls. The men aren’t simply her muses; they look at her as if to a sister, aunt or mother.

Physically and psychically vulnerable, they still let her in. She’s disarming, and as familiar as someone in the family. They allow her to see their sweetness, strength and charm.

During the video interview from 2018, Casteel asks, “What does it mean to put a living brown body out into the world in this context?”

Venturing outside on the streets of New York, where she lives, the artist finds clever ways to include political messages inside of her portraiture without making them heavy-handed or merely didactic. Her paintings may feature slogans, but the propaganda emanates from body language or a facial expression. Timothy (2017) wears a black T-shirt with white lettering that reads, “Black is Beautiful.” He’s sitting against a red wall that reads, in part, “a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.” The message is, perhaps, redundant. One look at the smile on his face communicates her purpose and her beautiful intent.

Your friend’s response to her delinquentdoodle destroying your stuff— “Yawn...whatever”—suggests she comes up short in a personality trait called conscientiousness, one of the five core personality dimensions that shape how we typically behave (the other four being openness, extroversion, agreeableness and emotional stability). Each of these dimensions reflects a spectrum so, for example, extroversion includes everything from extreme extroversion to extreme introversion (the party animal versus the sort of animal that prefers hiding under a car till the shindig’s over).

Research by psychologists Joshua Jackson and Brent Roberts finds that people with high conscientiousness are responsible, hardworking, orderly and able to control their impulses. (Their work was focused on the behaviors of the conscientious, as opposed to thoughts and feelings.) Not surprisingly, other research—a cross-cultural study by psychologist Martin C. Melchers— finds that people with higher levels of conscientiousness tend to be more empathetic (making them less likely to react to their animal turning a friend’s possessions into chew toys by being all, “Dogs will be dogs!”).

Personality traits are to a great extent genetic, and tend to be pretty stable over time and across situations. However, psychologists Nathan Hudson and R. Chris Fraley find that a person may be able to change their personality traits, including their level of conscientiousness.

Their research suggests that a person can become more conscientious by continually setting very specific weekly goals—for example, tasks to follow through on that they’d normally let slide.

The problem is this friend of yours might need a wakeup call to be motivated to change. People who get away with living sloppy typically see no reason to live otherwise. Consider the difference in how driven someone would be to clean up their act in the wake of “hitting bottom” vs., say, “hitting middle.”

Another demotivating factor might be your friend’s “welfare trade-off ratio,”a term that unfortunately sounds like illegal food stamp swapping. In fact, as evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Lars Penke explain, a person’s welfare tradeoff ratio refers to how much weight they place on their own interests relative to those of another person. In other words, “welfare” really means “well-being”—as in, “How willing am I to sacrifice what’s best for me so you can have what’s good for you?”

Buss and Penke add that people who are narcissistic—self-centered, exploitative, with a strong sense of entitlement, and lacking in empathy—“habitually place a higher weight on their own welfare relative to the welfare of others.” Now, maybe you don’t see this sort of selfish, cavalier attitude coming out habitually in your friend, but maybe that’s because friendship is fun-centered and thus doesn’t have the sort of strains put on it that a business partnership or relationship does.

(You don’t have to decide whether to have an abortion because you went out for drinks with your friend.)

Where does this leave you?

Unfortunately, without a lot of attractive options. Though it’s reasonable to prefer that she change her philosophy on dog training (which appears to be “Why bother?”) expecting her to do so is basically the love child of toxic hope and irrational expectations. Tempting as it must be to simply demand she train her dog, as you’ve already seen, telling people what to do tends to backfire, leading them to tell you where to go.

What you can do is choose: Consider whether the benefits of having her in your life are worth the cost. If you decide to keep her around, be realistic: Leave any pricey rejuveceuticals and anything else of value locked in a kennel when visiting her and Cujodoodle. It might also help to look on the positive side: It’s only her dog running wild; she isn’t hollering out the back door, “Kids, if you rob the liquor store, don’t forget Mommy’s merlot!”

My friend recently bought a $3,000 labradoodle but refuses to pay to get it trained.

The dog is really badly behaved. Whenever I bring up the need for training, my friend gets very defensive and lashes out at me. Last time I visited her, the dog got into my bag and chewed through some seriously expensive skin care products I treated myself to. She acted like it wasn’t an issue and even said it was my fault for leaving my bag on the floor! FORCE FIELD A strong cast helps, but is not enough to save the fractured ‘Star Wars’ conclusion.

Skyfail At least ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ succeeds in finally ending the saga

F

IRST COMES THE brassy blast of John Williams’ iconic theme—hurtling at you from 42 years in the past and from a galaxy far, far away. Then, the first words in the title crawl of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. “The dead speak!”

And that’s your problem right there.

An enervating part of the Star Wars religion is the way the dearly departed keep coming back as bluetinted ghosts—as in Return of the Jedi, when old Obi Wan joined the teddy bear picnic of Ewoks from the next

world. The grave never seems to be able to hold either the characters or the actors who play them, such as Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher.

When the filmmakers mean us to feel sorry about an already demised actor dying on screen, it’s like that glitch in Facebook’s algorithms that reprints a person’s obituary on the anniversary of their death. It’s sad, and news to some, but it lacks surprise.

Moreover, The Rise of Skywalker violates a sacred law of good filmmaking—that is waiting to show the monster until the end of the movie. From the crawl, we know that Emperor Palpatine (quavery old Ian McDiarmid) has come back to life.

He’s resurrected and needs to be snuffed. Thus, we know where this movie will end. Him and the final order (a football stadium full of hooded faceless cheerers-on) hide on a grim, bad planet, punctuated by streaks of blue lightning. It’s a Sith stronghold that can only be found with a triangular widget, which in turn can only be found with the help of an inscription on a blade, written in the dread tongue of Mordor (actually Sithese), which C3P0 is forbidden to utter. And we know that the last of the Jedi, the one-named Rey (Daisy Ridley—sometimes beautifully fierce, sometimes blandly intrepid) must be the spearhead.

The Rise of Skywalker has the disadvantage of following The Last Jedi, maybe the best in the series; during lag times in this J.J. Abrams vehicle, one recalls the energy Rian Johnson brought to the lightsaber fight in Snoke’s crimson throne room, and the groans of the grizzled Chewbacca, and the closeups of Adam Driver’s vaguely teenage face swollen with emotion.

Kylo Ren helps this film. One enjoys

the mournfulness of this would-be villain, and how this grandfatherworshipping warrior is like Napoleon III, floundering violently in the shade of his famous uncle, the real Napoleon.

Kylo is now delicately scarfaced, and his shattered helmet has been repaired, kintsugi style, with some veins of crimson metal. The Rise of the Skywalker’s most compelling motif is the relationship between him and Rey, the woman he loves and hates and can’t stop pulling a lightsaber on.

The two are so bonded that they’re in each other’s heads. They share separate spaces at the same time; in one fight, she’s on a spaceship and he’s in a marketplace; he swings his saber and bursts open a bag of beans, and the beans roll at her feet, many miles away.

Their more or less climactic duel takes place atop the rusting ruins of the Death Star, surrounded by a turbulent sea. But there’s plenty of rudderless action as the rest of the characters make a crowded, yet uneventful, chase from one planet to another. The Rise of Skywalker seems to lose track of everyone, particularly the becalmed rebels where a digitally reconstructed Leia (Fisher) waits for news. Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose—who refreshed The Last Jedi—is put in the corner. C3P0 risks lobotomy in a scene with no payoff; Chewbacca becomes a hostage for a while, and then he isn’t.

Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaacs) are given underling dialogue as well as the company of a pair of women warriors (Kerry Russell and Naomi Ackie) with whom they don’t spend enough time.

There’s constant eye candy: a Kumba Mehla-style celebration in the desert called “The Festival of the Ancestors” (which the movie certainly is), a sixeyed sandworm attack and various growling muppets. Yet nothing much connects: the threats during a final duel, blasted with CGI lightning, sound like the taunts of children on a playground trying to top each other.

This was once a series that did things that no other movie franchise could; the best thing you can say about it now is that it’s finally wrapped up.
