comments@metronews.com RE: OFFICIALS SPAR OVER WHO SHOULD INFLUENCE BILLIONS IN TAX APPEALS, NEWS, NOV. 28

Excellent watchdog reporting that I have not seen anywhere else.

I saw you not close the milk lid completely again. You know that’s what makes it go bad before the expiration date. I keep seeing milk jugs in the trash that are still half full of milk. Such a waste. Last night I saw you take the milk out of the fridge, into the living room, which was odd. I guess you already had a glass in there? Or maybe you were drinking right from the jug? I couldn’t tell, because the blinds to the family room were closed again. I look forward to the cool summer breeze which permits you to keep your windows open all night. If you were with me, I’d buy you all the milk you ever wanted. A milk jug for every day of the week. You could bathe in milk. But alas, you don’t even know who I am. I know who you are. I want to whisper sweet nothings into your ear like the wind blows through the tree that I am hiding in. But even I know that this love can never be. And without you, I am not whole. I am but 2 percent of a man.

Santa Clara County Board of Education trustee DARCIE GREEN made her romance with RICK GREEN a public spectacle. From the onstage proposal at the San Jose Jazz Festival to the story they shopped about him taking her surname—because feminism!—to the incessant social media updates professing their undying devotion, the two courted an audience for their infatuation. That made it more than a little awkward when, in the first week of 2016, Metro exposed Mr. Green’s longstanding history of battering women and the questionable judgment of a locally prominent feminist—and then-Assembly candidate—overlooking that past. Ms. Green responded by lashing out at the messenger.

They Fast-forward to the Did present—and the What? anticipated trainwreck. On Sept. 6, the onceSEND TIPS TO rising star in Silicon FLY@ Valley Democratic METRONEWS. politics wound up in COM the clink after she was accused of running over her husband. In hubby’s telling, she tried to ram him with her car for reasons he declined to divulge. He called police, filed a stay-away order against her, worked out a joint custody situation for their 2-year-old son and posted selfies of his injuries to social media. Because Mr. Green took the first legal action and has been pretty vocal about the incident, his version of events has become the public record. Mr. Green even spoke at length with Fly about his newfound calling teaching kids about the dangers of intergenerational violence. Ms. Green didn’t return Fly’s call for comment, has yet to file a response in court and hasn’t disclosed much except for an initial Facebook post shortly after the car collision. “Thank you … for everyone who has not handed down the big ole ‘I told you so,’” she wrote in a show of self-awareness that concluded with a note of defiant optimism. “I love believing in people and always will.”

BY ANY OTHER NAME Lila Rose, the 30-year-old founder of anti-abortion group Live Action, brands herself a “human rights activist.”

Rose Against How a San Jose native became the face of millennial anti-abortion activism BY TORI TRUSCHEIT

L

ILA ROSE has had a very good year. In October, she starred in a mini-documentary from The Atlantic about the anti-abortion organization she founded in her parents’ San Jose living room at age 15. Then she got married and went on a honeymoon, posting to Instagram from the beach with her new, extremely clean-cut husband in matching blue and white outfits. And in the same month, the Supreme Court confirmed a justice who will likely do more to end abortion than anyone in recent history.

Reproductive justice organizations are preparing for the biggest rollback of abortion rights in decades, and the mood among pro-choice women and sexual assault survivors is low. “It scares me for my daughters and their friends,” said Laura Jimenez, executive director of California Latinas for Reproductive Justice. But Rose told The Atlantic she was “excited to be alive” during this time, when abortion could become illegal everywhere. Rose, now 30, became a high-profile anti-abortion activist after she pretended to be a 13-year-old and infiltrated Planned Parenthood in 2008, making hoaxy videos that she hoped would get the organization defunded. Even with heavy Breitbart promotion that led to a Congressional investigation, the videos didn’t affect Planned Parenthood’s

national funding. “The videos were heavily edited and fraudulently obtained, and ultimately there was no finding of wrongdoing,” says Lupe Rodriguez, spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. But they put Live Action on the map. It’s a right-wing version of the Silicon Valley startup narrative, except Rose is marketing herself; these days, she leads a team of about 20 employees in an Arlington, Virginia, office, the millennial figurehead for the same anti-abortion tactics that groups like Operation Rescue have been using for decades. Rose calls pro-choice feminism “antiquated,” but nothing about Live Action’s opposition to abortion, birth control, and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) is modern; one in four American women of reproductive age will have an abortion, 98 percent of sexually active women have used birth control at some point, and IVF is old news in Silicon Valley, a hotbed of tech fertility companies that are based around its possibilities. A Supreme Court poised to roll back protections on body autonomy feels especially extreme at a time when #MeToo has reshaped consequences for sexual harassment and in a county that recalled a judge that voters deemed too lenient on a rapist.

its existence drives right-wing voter turnout for anyone who promises to get rid of it. Instead, the idea is to close abortion clinics one by one, until they’re concentrated in blue states and it’s almost impossible to get an abortion in most of the country. But California is not immune to this strategy, either. The Supreme Court ruled against the state in June when it said “pregnancy crisis centers” that masquerade as abortion clinics and convince unsuspecting patients to carry their pregnancies to term are allowed to maintain their facade. The clinics don’t provide help with rent after the baby is born or free child care so you can keep your job or stay in school, and California’s high cost of living makes an unintended pregnancy even more difficult to manage. Those political decisions mean reproductive rights advocates in California can’t focus all their attention on supporting other states. It means they have to put at least some energy into protecting what rights Californians already have. But access is still an issue here. Medi-Cal covers abortion, which is the best possible insurance scenario to allow everyone who needs an abortion to get one. But the high cost of living in California means that for many people, the list of financial hurdles for getting an abortion are long. And threats to exclude Planned Parenthood from receiving funding through Medicaid, the ostensible goal of Rose’s attack videos, would directly affect access to abortion in California. Live Action avoids many underlying questions behind the policies they support, including that life starts at fertilization and that contraception is as bad as abortion. The idea seems to be that if you’re not having procreative sex in a heterosexual marriage, you shouldn't have sex at all. For Rodriguez, Rose’s positions don’t match the public health reality of a sexually active public, nor do they align with what most people believe. “Young people, and all people really, are not abstaining from sexual activity,” she says. “Would Jesus agree?” one of Rose’s followers asked when a guy on Twitter wanted Rose to butt out of people’s sex lives. “Who cares?” he answered. That’s the big question, the vast gap between those who’ve just stacked the Supreme Court and everyone else. The debate rages, but the shift away from legalized body autonomy is already underway, and the impact will be generational.

for the

The most wonderful time of the year!

DECEMBER 5-11, 2018 | metrosiliconvalley.com | sanjose.com | metroactive.com

Stanford professor Michele Dauber, who led the Judge Aaron Persky recall and founded the Enough is Enough political action committee, thinks we’re in a new moment. In the Obama era, she says, there was broad consensus “that women should be captains of their own fate, and they should be able to decide when and under what conditions they have sex and and when and under what conditions they have babies.” But Kavanaugh’s confirmation indicates that things have changed. The moment might be new, but Rose’s work feels old-school. Her organization uses the same grisly photos of fetuses that protesters have always used outside abortion clinics, now with the addition of memes, like the one on her social media pages that compares photos of slavery and the Holocaust to abortion. Her Twitter background is a direct echo of the Women’s March logo: same colors, same silhouette-style image, except the woman in the image has a pregnant belly with a fetus. Her tweets skip weekends, as if she’s employed someone to do her social media and they take Saturdays and Sundays off. That’s hard to know, since the “who we are” page on LiveAction’s website lists no other staff members, as if Rose is the only person in the organization. Even her Instagram feed, featuring screenshots from her Fox interviews and carefully posed selfies, is oddly impersonal. But Rose is a leader for winning times, and abortion foes are winning. She doesn’t need to be scrappy and terrifying like the evangelical extremists camped out in front of Midwestern abortion clinics in the early ’90s. She also, apparently, doesn’t need to speak with any media she deems less than fawning. Rose skipped out on a long-planned interview with Metro. She can simply appear on TV and smile on her tightly curated Instagram feed, secure in the knowledge that reproductive rights are fading in America. That fade could be gradual, but it does seem likely. Usually, when states pass anti-abortion laws that seem unconstitutional, higher courts shut them down. But with Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court and the Trump administration stacking lower courts with young anti-abortion judges, we might see fewer of those laws get overturned in the early stages. Cynics say the right might not want to overturn Roe v. Wade itself, since

HEALTHY HOLIDAYS Veggielution’s ‘Eastside Street Food Hub’ is setting up weekends near Christmas in the Park.

Tasting Success Farm-to-fork nonprofit Veggielution helps food vendors get street legal BY GARY SINGH

B

ETWEEN THE Hammer and the Ha Ha, I went looking for Veggielution. Why? Because jackfruit mole tamales and vegan hot chocolate are great ways to activate dead public spaces.

A full-functioning urban farm located at the far back corner of

Emma Prusch Park in East San Jose, Veggielution already serves up a bouillabaisse of community activities, including farm tours, garden adventures and all sorts of educational initiatives. People can dig in the soil, cook in the kitchen or harass the pesky peacocks that invade the farm. I’ve done each of those things myself. “We went out in East San Jose and

we actually walked around and talked to vendors and basically recruited them on the street,” said Emily Schwing, Veggielution’s development communications manager. As a result, street vendors accustomed to selling store-bought food from illegal carts with no health permits can now learn how to go through proper channels and do their job on the books. Equipped with a business tax ID and new skills, the vendors are on a path toward starting their own legal street food businesses. “No one here in San Jose wants a street food scene to be just packaged goods,” Schwing said. “They want it to be as diverse as the people. So we help create a system where the different cultures around San Jose will be able to step into a street food scene that’s set up for them to be successful, letting them cook what

they know how to cook, and making that the new standard.” With a presence near Christmas in the Park, Veggielution intends its “Eastside Street Food Hub” as a way to introduce local food culture to visitors who come to San Jose’s main winter attraction. The street food hub was originally located in the dimly lit, horribly designed swath of empty concrete between the Hammer Theatre and Second Street. On paper this made sense, but it turned out the Ha Ha public artwork completely obscured the food hub, disconnecting it from any flow of pedestrian traffic coming from Christmas in the Park. The whole operation then relocated to Paseo de San Antonio in front of the defunct Camera 12 Cinema building, where it will now sit on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings for a few hours, giving passersby a chance to sample a variety of local fare including fresh tamales, sandwiches and holiday drinks made from scratch by East San Jose vendors. As such, the scenario in front of Camera 12 is a much more effective way to activate a failed public space. The dead theater complex is one of the most hideous eyesores in recent memory, resulting from decades of hick-town redevelopment failures. Now, in front of the building on weekend nights, one finds a handful of vibrant tables where happy families can purchase jackfruit mole tamales and hot cinnamon tea, although the menu will change every weekend. It’s a fantastic way to activate an underutilized pedestrian walkway. To the city of San Jose’s credit, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) stepped in at the last minute to help connect Veggielution with kitchen access at the Gardner Community Center when the previous kitchen wasn’t working out. The new food entrepreneurs-in-training were able to get the job done on deadline and bring out the goods. “Our vendors have never really worked in a kitchen before, so being able to help them operate in a kitchen is also a part of this learning process,” Schwing said. “The fact that PRNS just kind of stepped up and found an opportunity, they found a space that wasn’t being used, we had a need, and them being able to help us fill that need was huge.”

Super speech

Charles Martinet turned a minor Shakespearean role into one of the most recognized voices in video game history BY MIKE HUGUENOR

L

IFE IN THE Mushroom Kingdom is a grand adventure. Even though it’s filled with koopas and piranha plants, it’s a place where the sky is always blue and a hero is never far away. That hero, of course, is a little fellow in a red cap and blue overalls. A man whose modest profession brought him to an amazing new world. A plumber named Mario.

For 37 years now, Mario has been synonymous with fun and adventure—a character loved the world over. But while most people think of him as hailing from Brooklyn (where he is said to live) or Tokyo (where he was created by Nintendo), the lesser known fact is that Mario is actually from San Jose—or at least his voice is. Charles Martinet, the man who has voiced Mario internationally in all of his video games since 1996, was born in here. And as Nintendo prepares to release Super Smash Bros Ultimate (the 146th title to feature

Martinet since he began playing the part) it’s worth taking a look back at another grand adventure: the story of how an ordinary kid from the South Bay faced his fears, took on the world and became an internationally recognized super hero.

WORLD 1-1 It was a warm September day when Mario came into the world, fair, with a gentle breeze. Fitting for a hero, the San Jose Mercury announced the birth: 14 “MARTINET—To Mr.

SYSTEM RESET Upon graduation Martinet found himself back in the Bay Area. Inspired by his adolescence abroad, he applied to UC Berkeley as a history major, intent on becoming some sort of foreign dignitary. “I thought I’d end up being a lawyer and hopefully work in a foreign office, work my way up to ambassador, something like that,” he remembers. “I craved living overseas again, and in my 20-year-old mind, I thought that could be possible— working in an embassy, doing that kind of work.” But when it came time to write a thesis, his run was cut short. The only professor he could see himself working on his thesis with was unavailable. With no clear way forward, Martinet dropped out of college. For someone with international ambitions, dropping out hurt. Looking back, however, it’s hard to see the failure as anything other than providence. With his schedule now cleared, a friend suggested Martinet take his acting class. He initially balked at the idea, citing his own timidity. But, as it turns out, his shyness was no match for his appetite. “The way he got me to go was to say, ‘We’re going to go to lunch every day before class.’ And so I said, OK!’” Lured by the promise of free food, Martinet took his first acting class. For weeks, he sat quietly in the safety of the back row, watching his classmates read

their monologues and hoping to go unnoticed. That could only last so long, and eventually, his name was called. Up on stage, fear passed through him in waves, moving from one leg to the other as he tried to stop himself from trembling. “My right foot was shaking so much that I put all my weight on it. Then my left foot was shaking so much that I tried to put the weight evenly between the two, and then the two were shaking like crazy!” Martinet doesn’t remember what the monologue was anymore, but he does remember what happened when it finished: the class broke into applause. No one had noticed his fear. At that point he realized something incredible: He had enjoyed himself. With each lesson (and its accompanying free meal), he found his fear abating, replaced by a new sense of freedom. He went on his first audition, trying out for the role of Oberon in a local production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This audition would mark Martinet’s second serendipitous failure—the event that put him squarely on his life’s course. “I think that failure told me, ‘This is what I want,’” he says now. “Not to be a lawyer, not to be an embassy person: I wanted to be an actor. Because it was fun. When I was on that stage, it was really fun.” With newfound conviction, Martinet dove headlong into acting. Using the same monologue from his Midsummer audition, he auditioned for Berkeley Repertory Theater’s summer apprenticeship program, competing for space against many of the people who had actually been cast in the play. And this time he got in. When the apprenticeship ended, he moved to England, where he studied everything from dialect to dance at the prestigious Drama Studio of London. A year later, the man who could once “disappear in a room with three people” returned to Berkeley a trained actor, ready to begin a career. Shortly after he returned, Martinet was hit by tragedy. “My dear friend committed suicide, and I found his body,” he says. The discovery was shocking, the pain difficult to put into words. In

recovering from the Algerian War and the student protests of ’68, an army trained for guerrilla warfare prowled the metropolitan areas. “There were guys with machine guns on,” Martinet recalls, describing the heavily armed gendarmerie. “There were terrorist plots to kill [French president Charles] de Gaulle. The Vietnam War was going on then, too. The whole world was on edge.” It was a lot for such a young mind to take in. Already a shy child, Martinet grew more introspective throughout his time in Europe. By the time he graduated high school, he was timid but cultured, and ready for the next stage of his life.

James Reber met Martinet in college. A navy vet, Reber attended UC Berkeley on the GI Bill. Initially, he’d planned on studying sociology, but his plans were soon derailed by William Shakespeare. Shifting his focus to drama, Reber joined the Berkeley Shakespeare Festival in the role of business manager. By all accounts, his tenure with the organization was rocky. Articles from the time describe Reber as a stormy Irishman combative with press and prone to infighting. After three seasons, he left the company, and Berkeley altogether, for San Jose. At the time San Jose did not have a repertory theater, but Reber quickly put together plans to form one. He sent brochures to politicians, pastors and journalists, attended parties and got to know the power players in the city. After working San Jose’s socialite circles for a year, he managed to nab two grants totaling $90,000. On Dec. 8, 1979, he drove up to Sacramento and incorporated the San Jose Repertory Theater. By now Reber had begun to move in San Jose’s theater world. Then one day he bumped into an old friend from Berkeley. “I ran into Martinet somewhere, and he had been acting,” Reber recalls, still sounding surprised after all these years. The last time he had seen his friend from college he had been a shy history major. Now he was an actor? It was a happy coincidence. Reber needed actors, and Martinet needed a reason to get out of Berkeley. After coming down to San Jose for an audition, Martinet landed the first major acting gig of his career, becoming one of the founding members of San Jose Repertory Theater in the process. In early 1981, The Rep opened its first season with a production of Noel Coward’s manners comedy Private Lives. The cheerful Martinet was cast in

the humorless role of Victor Prynne, a character many actors found stifling. “Coward himself once said that the roles of Victor and Sibyl were hopeless,” wrote the Peninsula Times Tribune in a review of the production. “But Charles Martinet works wonders in his performance.” “He was clearly an audience favorite,” says Reber. Martinet would go on to play a number of major roles at the Rep, including the lead role in Molliere’s Tartuffe, and the Gentleman Caller in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. But it was a smaller part in the theater’s second season which would change his life entirely. The San Jose Rep opened its second season with a modernized take on The Taming of the Shrew. Set in postwar Italy, it was a lively production with the air of a party. It called for big performances. To highlight its setting, everyone in the production spoke in some kind of dialect. “Bronx, Moroccan, lots and lots of Italian,” one reviewer noted. Martinet, in his second performance for the Rep, was cast in the role of Gremio, an elderly Italian man, whose hopeless pining for a younger woman is the play’s subplot. Having studied in London—and lived for many in Europe—he was uniquely ready for the part. Over the phone, Martinet does his Gremio voice: “Ah, signore Petruchio! Mamma mia!” Sounding a little older, and a little less cartoonish, it is still unmistakably the voice of Mario. The Taming of the Shrew debuted at the Montgomery Theater on on Sep. 18, 1981, and ran for a week and a half, giving Martinet plenty of time to become comfortable in the voice that would come to define his career. Just three months before it premiered, a Japanese card game company called Nintendo released its first video game: an arcade cabinet challenging players to jump over barrels and avoid flames while trying to defeat a rampaging ape. The hero of that game was a little plumber in a red jumpsuit and hat.

17 To supplement his modest actor’s income, Martinet waited tables at Original Joe’s for his first few years with the Rep. But by the time he left the company in 1984, he had found a much more lucrative gig: corporate videos. “I made more money in a day than I made for a week in the theater,” he remembers. “I was very lucky that I got to play the broadest, craziest characters in the theater, and I followed that right into my work in acting for corporate videos.” By his estimate, Martinet did around 600 corporate videos over the next few years, working with every company he could in booming Silicon Valley. Once, after spending nine hours filming a 15-second ad spot, the director asked him if he did voiceover work. “I said, ‘Yes, of course,’ not knowing exactly what he meant, and he handed me a script.” It was 12-word ad for the former Orchard Supply Hardware store off of Bird Avenue. Martinet read the dozen words into a microphone and instantly doubled the money he had made that day. It was his first job as a voice actor. “Then one day I was doing what actors do, sitting on the beach waiting for the phone to ring, and I got a page from a friend.” It was another actor. He had gotten wind of an audition nearby, something about a trade show in Las Vegas. It wasn’t necessarily open to the public, but... “I have no idea why, but I went to this audition,” Martinet says, “and I was literally walking in the door as the casting director was walking out the door. I said, ‘Can I read for this?’” Caught in the doorway, the director agreed to set the camera up again and film one more audition. “He said I was an Italian plumber from Brooklyn named Mario, for this company called Nintendo, and we were going to do a real-time animation system that had never been done before. They had no idea if it was going to work or not, but I still had to keep talking all day long if I wanted to get paid.” The company, he was told, made video games, and its audience was

primarily younger. “So I resisted the temptation to make a gruff, angry plumber sorta thing, and I thought I could do something really fun instead.” That’s when he remembered a role he had loved, one of the highlights from his days at the Rep: “One of my favorite people of all time, the sweet, kind, lovely, wonderful Gremio. And so I thought, well, make that voice younger and start talking.” He didn’t know anything about video games (“Just Asteroids and Tank,” he says), so he had to think of something else to talk about. “I thought, well, I’ll just make up things about food, following the theme of why I ended up taking an acting class to begin with. So I just started making up things about spaghetti, and pasta, and different types of food. And I just kept talking until I heard the director say, ‘Stop talking! Cut! You’ve run through the whole tape!’” The only actor to take the direction to “keep talking all day long” seriously, Martinet landed the part of a lifetime.

THE VALLEY

In 1991, Martinet began performing as Mario at Nintendo trade shows. Sitting behind a screen with motion capture balls glued to his face, he would speak in character to the crowd while a computer rendered his facial expressions in real time. At event after event, he was a hit. Then, five years later, he got a call from Nintendo. “They said, ‘Mr. Miyamoto would like you to play Mario in a video game.” Widely considered one of the greatest games ever made, Super Mario 64 came out in 1996 and has sold over 11 million copies worldwide. The first fully 3D game of its kind, it was also the first to give its hero a voice. Anyone who has played the game will remember its title screen—which opens with Martinet’s jubilant proclamation: “It’s-a me! Mario!” In the adventures that ensue, Martinet’s voice helps players

truly feel what their digital avatar is experiencing. There are wordless exclamations of pain, exertion and surprise. Martinet’s performance— and all the performances to come in titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey—are now regularly heard spilling from television speakers in homes all over the world. These days, Martinet spends much of his time on the road. Ever the traveler, he is a regular guest at Comic Cons and video game events. Often, people tell him he is the voice of their childhood. At every opportunity, he repeats his message: “Follow your heart. Do what you love to do. Expand your dreams. Seek your happiness. Because when you’re happy, you bring happiness into the world. And I think we need that more than anything now.” Martinet’s role as the plumber from Brooklyn has now spanned 27 years. It’s a role he’s played with audible and infectious joy. And after nearly three decades in the blue overalls, he’s just happy that, of all places, the grand adventure brought him here. “I know the guys that do all the other voices, the Master Chief, and the villains and things, but I’m just lucky that I got to play this guy that I love more than any other character I’ve ever met: Mario. A common man who falls in love with a princess and devotes his life to rescuing her. It’s such a beautiful story. It really is almost Shakespearean, you know?”

This place just opened and it’s already got my attention for its super-authentic Szechuan menu, which features smoked Hunan pork, a nice variety of steamed dumplings and even a spicy pig ear app. Their entire menu is “100 percent handmade,” and they offerup a rotating selection of dinner and lunch specials. Ding’s has all the earmarks of a fantastic hole-inthe-wall eatery that could become a family favorite for years to come. More research needs to be done, and a visit or three are in order.

It’s not very often that food court food makes this list, but I think Westgate mall’s Rule the Roost might be onto something. While the business model may look similar to that of a popular chain (that shall go unnamed) with their crispy chicken sandwiches and waffle-cut fries, they do set themselves apart with one word: spice. Rule the Roost has the much-vaunted Nashville hot chicken that us chili heads crave.

SANTALAND DIARIES

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Wed, 8pm, $20 Lohman Theatre, Foothill College

Wed, 8pm, $22 Northside Theatre Company, San Jose

After last year’s successful holiday run, TheatreWorks in partnership with Foothill College is bringing David Sedaris’ classic tale of working as a mall Santa’s grumpy little helper back for a second offering. Born out the writer’s real experiences as a curmudgeonly elf in New York City in the early ’90s, Santaland Diaries’ hilarious, cynical but ultimately sweet vignettes helped launch Sedaris’ career, and are a perfect fit for the one-man show format. Just like last year, the production will feature emerging local talent Max Tachis in the narrator’s role, ensuring continued success for this witty Christmas classic. Runs through Dec. 23. (TM)

It’s a Christmas tradition. This week, the Northside Theatre Company once again takes on Charles Dickens’ iconic tale about selfishness, regret, time and reconciliation—1843’s A Christmas Carol. Northside’s telling is an adaptation by the theater group’s founder and former managing artistic director, the late Richard T. Orlando. With Orlando’s help, Northside Theatre Company has built a reputation as a model of private-public arts partnerships for small theaters, delivering impressive productions with talented casts for years. Plays Wednesday through Sunday until Christmas Eve. (TM)

CHRISTMAS BALLET ZOSO

MATT BRAUNGER

Wed-Sun, 7:30pm, $58+ Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts

Thu, 7pm, $25+ The Ritz, San Jose

Fri, 7:30pm, $20+ The Improv, San Jose

Like any good tribute band, the Led Zeppelin-aping Zoso can be said to have a schtick—that is, if you can rightly call technical mastery a “schtick.” Performing almost all of the legendary band’s catalogue, from the tightly wound, explosive jams of Led Zeppelin to the maximalist, genre-spanning experimentations of Physical Graffiti and In Through the Out Door, Zoso claims to be “the most accurate and captivating Led Zeppelin live show since the real thing.” That’s a pretty bold claim, but Zoso can back it up. Wowing teenagers and baby-boomers alike since 1995, Zoso is bringing its act to the Ritz this Thursday. (Fake) Robert Plant’s chest hair included. (TM)

No serious examination of the facts will lead a sensible person to conclude that the Trump trolls have a point when they say it’s a “scary time” for straight white men in America today. That doesn’t mean cis dudes don’t face any challenges. Comedian Matt Braunger manages to coax some non-confrontational laughs out of the insecurities that arise from being single and 39 in the #MeToo era. “I don’t want to be creepy!” he says, lamenting the unfortunate nature of his own biological imperatives. “No matter how smooth you break the ice, the objective is still the same.” Thru Dec. 9. (NV)

Much like The Nutcracker, Smuin Ballet’s annual production of The Christmas Ballet has become a favorite of the Bay Area Christmas season. Unlike The Nutcracker, however, The Christmas Ballet isn’t constrained by centuries of tradition, animated toy soldiers and dancing rodents. Instead, the local dance company will present a medley of holiday musical favorites, with the company’s talented dancers pirouetting through jazz, ballet, tap and other dance styles. Founded in San Francisco in 1994, Smuin Ballet has grown into one of the premier Bay Area ballet companies, with its contemporary, innovative and awe-inspiring productions. (TM)

ZYDECO HELLRAISERS

NOT SO SILENT NIGHT

Fri, 7pm, $35+ Bing Studio, Stanford

Sat, 6:30pm, $26+ SAP Center, San Jose

The zany, uptempo style of Louisiana folk music known as Zydeco first emerged from the sweltering swamps of New Orleans—the result of French, German, Spanish, American Indian and Afro-Caribbean co-mingling. The genre has been centuries in the making, and Dwayne “Dopsie” Rubin aims to keep the tradition fluid with his zydeco-fusion band, Dwayne Dopsie & the Zydeco Hellraisers. Rubin, who has been called “America’s Hottest Accordion Player,” plays explosive mix of zydeco, blues, jazz and reggae, while also incorporating other far-reaching genres. The result speaks for itself; the Hellraisers have found fans all over the world with their distinct blend. (TM)

What started in 1991 as a small acoustic-only offering by a local radio station has grown over the decades into an alternative rock spectacular. ALT 105’s annual one-day winter show Not So Silent Night features the biggest names in rock and its various sects, and this year’s show at the SAP Center is no different. Featuring Death Cab for Cutie, Bastille, Florence and the Machine, Young the Giant, Chvrches, The Struts and many more, the annual Not So Silent Night festival has become a staple of the musically inclined Bay Area holiday season. One of the best bands to come from indie rock’s late ’90s-early ’00s golden age, Pinback inspired a generation of musicians to stray from chords, distortion and just about every other standard rock trope. When bands like Franz Ferdinand and Yeah Yeah Yeahs went for angularity, Pinback went for the gracefully slanted. When Modest Mouse transitioned to stadium-size positivity, Pinback retained the quiet experimentalism of a bedroom project. Members Rob Crow and Zach Smith have never stopped making music in their various other projects, but it’s been six years since a new Pinback record. Does this tour harken new music? Let’s hope. (MH)

In the binary universe of the Santería religion, Iré (blessing) is the opposite of Osogbo (curse). However, like true binaries, neither could exist without the other. Written by playwright, author, poet and professor Paul S. Flores, We Have Iré is a new theater project that uses the cosmology of Santería to explore the Cuban-American identity in all its complexity. Flores has teamed up with jazz composers, DJs and choreographers for the project, making We Have Iré an ambitious and highly multidisciplinary experience. This Saturday, the public has a brief opportunity to see the exciting play in development, witnessing its formation in real time. (MH)

BEYOND THE FRAME Elizabeth Murray’s ‘Chain Gang’ is one of many pieces currently on display at the Anderson Collection at Stanford.

Breaking Out Stanford’s ‘Spotlight on Elizabeth Murray’ looks back on an artist unconstrained BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR

E

LIZABETH MURRAY’S paintings aren’t contained within picture frames. They burst through, out of and beyond the confines of ordinary rectangles. “Spotlight on Elizabeth Murray” (at Stanford University’s Anderson Collection through March 25) features nearly a dozen of her oddly shaped constructions.

Instead of making a collage to fit inside of a frame, Murray (1940-2007) started each new work by sketching out her ideas. Then her bulbous,

gangly forms would come to dictate the organic shapes of her canvases. The massive painting Bop (20022003) epitomizes her approach. It’s an amalgamation of bold colors that challenges the viewer to come up with a logical response to it. A geometry assignment given at a clown college with a garish palette to match. Ketchup red outlines a distended yellow letter “M,” which, in turn, exhales a teal ghost. The ghost is about to collide into a pink worm with holes cut out of its midsection. Red squares frame the holes. There’s a brighter pink cloud, floating vertically, digesting a green zigzag or

lightning bolt. It’s neighboring a dark blue double bladder containing a game of Connect the Dots. And that’s only the top half. Murray was interviewed during the process of making Bop. She said, “What I’m looking for is resolution. I have it one day, and I don’t have it the next day.” That resolution or irresolution comes through in every colliding shape and color. Bop is often described as cartoonish. The brash, inflated disharmonies make it so. But Murray’s exaggerated shapes aren’t accompanied by a narrative. Her painting alone is an exclamation articulated. It’s equivalent to, yet beyond, language. In the excellent American Masters biographical documentary Everybody Knows, filmed over the last years of Murray’s life, she talks about her efforts “to put content into abstraction.” In a sensible sounding voiceover, Meryl Streep reads excerpts from Murray’s journals. They don’t reveal the exact or intended meanings of the work but offer more insights to her general approach.

Murray writes, “How does one become an artist? An artist signifies not just someone who crafts art. It is a way of thinking about life. A consciousness of the magic of life.” Mouse Cup reflects her particular way of thinking about life. And, as with most of Murray’s paintings, her titles provide viewers with a clue, or a possible way of looking at her work. You can make out the cup, a coffee mug, as the liquid begins to spill and the vessel itself begins to break. Gray steam seeps up out of the beverage and then down the sides. The heat could be causing the split in the canvas. Or is it caused by the hand with five fingers and a thumb (that’s six digits)? It’s extending away from the same gray steam, stretching to grasp the handle. Murray nods to a mundane aspect of domesticity, the morning cup of coffee. And she gives it an innocuous title as if to deflect our attention away from what’s right in front of our eyes— something in her home is falling apart. Twenty-seven years after graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Murray returned to her alma mater to give a lecture in 1989. In an audio excerpt, she cites Willem de Kooning as an early influence, explaining what his work taught her: “To learn how to look, to learn how to feel how alive a painting is.” There’s a bright orange cat at the pink center of Abraham. But you might miss his triangular-shaped head in the midst of all the squiggles, jagged lines and blotches. The Anderson only labels it as “gouache and watercolor pen on collaged paper on foam.” But even without any biographical information, Abraham must have been one of the cats who roamed around the country barn Murray painted in. The controlled chaos circles around him, an expression of an active cat’s zooming mind. Like de Kooning, she teaches us how to look at the way her hand moves the brush across the canvas. Murray’s playful approach to form and color can be cartoonish, but you can’t avoid the feeling that her paintings are alive and in perpetual motion.

dancing and physical comedy.

‘Joy!’ to the World FEW PEOPLE CAN cast a spell simply by entering a room. Tandy Beal can. With the carriage of a queen and the grace of a Botticelli sylph, the dancer-turned-impresario personifies joie de vivre. Energizing a stage or critiquing a new work-in-progress, Beal is as fully alive, active and engaged as it is possible to be. Or at least that’s what it looks like to her many students, audiences and fellow dancers. And it has for more decades than seems possible. Beal of the dark eyes, long limbs and infamous mane of Pre-Raphaelite hair just can’t quit. She’s been everywhere, collaborated with everyone from Frank Zappa to Bobby McFerrin, and directed both the Moscow Circus and Pickle Family Circus. Her company, Tandy Beal & Company, has been provoking wonder and joy for 43 years. Once you’ve done all that, it’s hard to stop. And what doesn’t stop is Beal’s faith in the magic of live performance. “We’re all in the present moment,” she insists, her eyes shining. “We are together. And anything can happen. This moment in real time, with all its joys and possibilities, your Joy! A Holiday Show whole body shares the experience.” In her life of performative immediacy, Beal and Dec 7-9, $15+ her repertory company of dancers, singers, acrobats Hammer Theatre and clowns invite audiences “to be part of something Center, San Jose larger than themselves.” tandybeal.com/joy Beal spent the past summer in New York “doing solo work again.” There she discovered that she still had all her own dancerly wits about her. She’ll be among those performing in the upcoming Holiday Show. Joy!, her latest holiday-themed production, will include plenty of new material, plus a few choice nuggets from Mixed Nutz, Beal’s updated Nutcracker Suite tour de force. “I’ve lived in the world of circus—and, for many years, of music. Joy! is a braid of those languages—circus, music, and dance—multilingual production,” she says, calling out some of the bits she’s most excited about in the new show. “Highlights from the Nut, like the Russian hip-hop dance— very fun. My two dear pals from the Pickle Family Circus, great physical comedic actors who went on to Cirque du Soleil, Jeff Raz and Diane Wasnak. These two clowns together have a chemistry like Laurel and Hardy.” The show’s title evolved after lots of brainstorming. Nothing seemed quite right. “So I stopped and asked myself, What am I doing?’” she recalls. “And the answer was that I want to bring some joy to people. So … Joy!” “We need this; we need joy,” Beal says.

LADY IN WAITING Abigail (Emma Stone) uses her feminine wiles to curry the Queen’s favor in ‘The Favourite.’In ‘’

Mudpie

In ‘The Favourite,’ a negger, a schemer and a crowned simpleton match wits BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

C

AKED WITH MUD, Emma Stone’s Abigail arrives at Queen Anne’s palace. Abigail notices that she’s not just filthy, but she smells. A servant says, “They shit in the streets around here. Political commentary, they call it.” For similar reasons, what Yorgos Lanthimos does in The Favourite could be called historical fictionalizing. One understands the desire of Lanthimos (Dogtooth, The Lobster) to toss some mud at a wide-eyed cinema sweetheart like Emma Stone; it’s like Bunuel slapping mire on Deneuve

in Belle du Jour. And the era invites mockery; the first decade of the 1700s were something like peak foppery, with mile-high wigs and white makeup to conceal syphilis sores. It’s a sour comedy of the rivalries between Queen Anne of England (Olivia Colman) and her bedchamber companions, the Duchess of Marlborough, Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), and the newly arrived Abigail (Stone), Sarah’s poor relation. The unfortunate Queen suffered smallpox, a watery eye, severe gout, perhaps lupus, and 17 pregnancies that never produced a child who lasted until puberty. She was a martyr to the office of royal broodsow. No master of statecraft,

she’s ordered around snappishly by the power behind the throne, Sarah. Abigail is cast into the kitchen to be a scrubber, but she’s too wiley to be kept there long. What commences is a contest between Sarah, looking as dangerous as a highwayman in the renowned costumer Sandy Powell’s black riding and hunting outfits. Abigail has a poisoner’s guile (she knows herbs) and throws herself at the queen in unsubtle ways, such as by stripping and hiding in the royal bed. The Queen gets strength from having her new lover, and doesn’t have to put up with Sarah’s negging. Sarah is one of those suitors who justifies her insulting tongue on the grounds that she is a truth teller. It’s a great idea for a film, but as realized here it’s a misanthrope’s tale in which every new bit of empowerment just makes a person worse. One interesting part of Anne’s short reign is the rise of the rivaling two-party system that still chains Washington, D.C. today. But the game here is a contest between old Tory fools distracted by duck racing and young Whig fools who like to play naked orange-tossing games. While there’s

talk of the London mob and the European wars, they’re both off-screen. Anne’s lesbianism was rumored by the merciless pamphleteers of the day (even Jonathan Swift engaged in the contemporary mud-slinging). Given what a devout woman Anne was, perhaps not. The quarrels between the three women were actually religious, over different brands of Protestantism. The contemporary prose, one of the peaks of English literature, was sometimes served up with nightsoil, but still the bluntness in Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara’s screenplay isn’t wit. The script defeats the actors. This was an age of insinuation. So there’s just aimless coarseness to threats like “Do you want to get punched?” or “I have a certain desire to see your nose broken,” or even Sarah claiming that Harley (Nicholas Hoult), the perfumed leader of the Whigs, smells like “a 96-year-old French whore’s vajuju.” Colman is the redeeming part of this unfortunate codicil to The Draughtsman's Contract. At the end she’s a sated, swollen gorgon who’ll inflame any case of Trumpancholia in the audience, especially in the baleful last shots with the camera underneath her stage-jowls, making her look like an Olmec head that suffered a stroke. Her Anne ultimate becomes one of those royal simpletons in whose sense of pleasure is completely dead, except for the pleasure they take in seeing other people on their knees. The music is an assortment of baroque mixed with horror movie organ, and minimalist scrapes and thrums on a cello, with Elton John singing “Skyline Pigeon” over a harpsichord during the end titles. Like the costumes, the locations are rich: the ultimate purpose of these palaces was to be used for the movies. Robotically calibrated pan shots and fisheye lens swallow up these interiors, rooms so vast that they curl up at the edges of the screen. Considering these characters, though, fisheye isn’t the right word. Stink-eye is more like it.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN With a new album in the works, Redd Kross is back on tour.

High & Low Redd Kross blends power, punk and pop culture in bubble gum factory shootout BY BILL KOPP

S

INCE FORMING IN 1980, Hawthorne, Californiabased Redd Kross have been expertly straddling the link between punk rock and power pop. And at their best, the band have erased the arbitrary line between those styles. Nearly 15 years after ending a lengthy hiatus, the band is still going strong with a tour, a new album in the making, and a pair of archival releases that remind modern-day listeners of Redd Kross’ trademark blend of inventiveness, humor and style.

The band’s name is an off-color reference to a notorious scene in the classic 1973 horror film The Exorcist. And that kind of bratty yet knowing plundering of pop culture is a signature approach for the group. In “1976,” a standout track on the group’s 1990 album, Third Eye, Redd Kross parody mall culture, ’70s fashion, Kiss and Elton John, all inside four minutes. Knowledge of pop culture adds to the listener’s appreciation of the band’s music, but bassist Steve McDonald insists that it’s not strictly necessary. “I guess it’s sort of like the way people say that the Kinks were too English to be widely accepted like the Stones and the Beatles in the U.S.,” McDonald ruminates.

“We’re holding trash culture and mainstream culture in some sort of high esteem,” he continues with a laugh. “And in the process, [we’re] making sure that we stay underground.” Redd Kross have indeed remained steadfastly outside of the mainstream scene upon which they so often comment. Though the band had a brief brush with the major labels in the 1990s, their undeniably catchy and uptempo music never broke through, even on the modest level enjoyed by artists like Jellyfish or Matthew Sweet. McDonald has few regrets, and he has his own theory as to why Redd Kross never achieved major success. “Some of it would be [the result of] choices we made and the timing in which we existed,” he offers. Ultimately, though, he thinks that aiming for widespread commercial success wouldn’t have been in the best interest of the band co-led by him and brother Jeff McDonald. “Maybe subconsciously we knew that wasn’t really the right choice for us,” he says. Ultimately, Redd Kross’ underground status does work in their favor. From their perch outside the mainstream, the band has been able to comment wittily

on passing fads and fashions, while paying tribute to everyone from ABBA to David Bowie to Charles Manson to the New York Dolls. And the group has done it all while maintaining their own stylistic identity. McDonald believes that through it all, Redd Kross has remained true to their own unique musical aesthetic. “I don’t think that we ever made our music in a way that we didn’t relate to in order to take another stab at the roulette wheel,” he says. “We still always did our own thing.” And as Redd Kross barrels toward their 40th anniversary, the band looks forward and backward at once. McDonald is reluctant to share details about the album due in 2019, but he offers a hint: “So far, it’s kind of a party album.” Acknowledging that current events have made it “such a tense and polarizing time for people out there,” he says that Redd Kross would “really like to invite people to have a good time for a while with us. Because you have to kind of refuel your spirit before you continue on with that fight.” Redd Kross’ aesthetic vision draws from across the musical landscape. The band is closely allied with Melvins; Steve McDonald has played bass with the sludge-metal heroes, and Melvins drummer Dale Crover is now an official member of Redd Kross. Though the two bands’ styles might seem miles apart, they’re already planning a twinheadliner tour for 2019, with Steve and Dale doing double duty. The band’s 1984 EP, Teen Babes from Monsanto, has just been reissued with five bonus tracks; it shows that Redd Kross’ focus on pop culture is equal parts irony and genuine appreciation. And Hot Issue, a new collection of previously unheard tracks, demonstrates that Redd Kross has always had more good song ideas than the means to release them. Without a hint of hubris, McDonald compares Hot Issue to the Who’s 1974 collection of outtakes, Odds & Sods. “It’s our nod to your rarities collection,” he says. When it’s suggested that the album holds together like a collection of new songs, McDonald smiles. “That’s my brother’s loving, curating touch.”

As someone who has been to Germany enough times now to enjoy pickled fish, I can say that Germans love hot beverages and wandering around from booth to booth… that and pickled seafood. I mean, I’m hooked and doomed—it’s hard to find here. But spiced bevs and candied nuts? You’ll find them there this Saturday. (I used hooked in a joke about fish. You’re welcome.) 11am-9pm. I think we could use the morale-boosting powers of cheese in these trying times! So maybe before or after you go to the Weihnachtsmarkt in Mountain View, you can stop by and celebrate cheese in Palo Alto. It’s only nine miles apart! It’ll be your most European Saturday in years. 2pm–4pm. 399 Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto = MUST SEE

Each of us gets into the holiday spirit in our own special way. Some of us build gingerbread houses; some of us build gingerbread psychiatric hospitals. To understand how you can long for human connection and (ugh!) long to avoid it at the very same time, it helps to understand the mechanics of loneliness. Like other emotions, loneliness is “adaptive,” meaning it has a function. It most likely evolved to motivate ancestral humans to behave in ways that would help them survive and mate. (Survival in the harsh ancestral environment would have been strongly connected with social bonds, and mating without a partner tends to be a bust for those who aren’t aphids or slime mold.) The problem is, our psychology is complex, and work orders laid out for us by different emotional adaptations— different functional feelings—sometimes conflict. For example, the sadness that comes with loneliness is also motivating—only it can motivate you to lie facedown on the couch. This probably seems anything but useful, but psychiatrist and evolutionary psychologist Randolph Nesse explains that the slowing down in energy that’s a partner to sadness

gives us time to examine our behavior, figure out whether we might do better with different tactics, and, if so, change our MO. It is important to take stock like this— to a point. But if you remind yourself of the evolved job of emotions, you’ll see that it’s sometimes in your interest to override them. In short, you can do your sadness homework without making your loneliness worse by spending your entire holiday mumbling into the throw pillows. Tell your besties that you could use some cheering up, and give yourself an emotional work assignment: going to a minimum of three parties over the holidays where groups of your friends will be in attendance. Keep in mind while you’re lifting what feels like your 3,000pound arm to apply mascara before going to some shindig that we’re bad at predicting what will make us happy or unhappy. Chances are, once you’re at the party, you’ll catch a buzz from the eggnog, get laughing with your friends and accidentally slack off on your fashionable nihilism—your muttering that it’s all nothingness and you’re alone in the universe except for your unpaid debts.

I’m a 32-year-old guy with a really great female friend. We talk on the phone, grab food, etc. She even kept me company in the hospital after I got into a motorcycle accident. I’ve started falling for her, and I want to ask her out, but I’m afraid of losing her friendship.—Conflicted It’s just a bit of a twist on the friendship ring. You’d like to give her a friendship penis. Risk researchers find that decisionmaking in the face of uncertainty is really hard for us. However, by plugging in all the information we have, positive and negative, we can make an educated prediction about how things are likely to turn out—and whether we can afford the loss if our effort is a bust. For example, if you have only one friend and if you’re pretty sure you could never make another—say, because you live on one of those tiny desert islands in a New Yorker cartoon—you might decide it’d be too costly for you to risk saying something. And if, on a scale of 1 to 10, your friend is a 9.2 and you’re

more on the bridge troll end of the spectrum (in both looks and career prospects), your chances of romance with her might be pretty slim. (Shrek is not a documentary.) If, after weighing the pros and cons, you decide to ask this woman out, you could simply say, “I’d like to take you on a date. Would you be interested in that?” Yes, it’s possible that doing this would tank your friendship, but chances are, you’d just act a little weird around her for a while. Then again, if you said nothing and constantly agonized over wanting her, you might also end up acting all weird—in ways that would make continuing your friendship impossible. (Okay, so she’s not into you, but maybe if you send her yet another love poem written in your own blood...)

I get very lonely around the holidays. My family is just my parents, and they’re far away. I don’t have a boyfriend right now. I have many friends and good people in my life, but instead of hanging out with them, I find myself isolating. So...it seems my treatment for loneliness is loneliness and then feeling sorry for myself that I’m home alone. Help!—Pity Party Animal

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY

By ROB BREZSNY week of December 5

ARIES (March 21-April 19): When I write a

Spanning the East River to link Manhattan and Brooklyn, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. But almost immediately people spread rumors that it was unstable. There was a growing fear that it might even crumble and fall. That's when charismatic showman P. T. Barnum stepped in. He arranged to march 21 elephants across the bridge. There was no collapse, and so the rumors quickly died. I regard the coming weeks as a time when you should take inspiration from Barnum. Provide proof that will dispel gossipy doubt. Drive away superstitious fear with dramatic gestures. Demonstrate how strong and viable your improvements really are.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You have a cosmic

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Robert Louis

horoscope for you, I focus on one or two questions because I don't have room to cover every single aspect of your life. The theme I've chosen this time may seem a bit impractical, but if you take it to heart, I guarantee you it will have practical benefits. It comes from Italian author Umberto Eco. He wrote, "Perhaps the mission of those who love humanity is to make people laugh at the truth, to make truth laugh, because the only truth lies in learning to free ourselves from insane passion for the truth." I swear to you, Aries, that if you laugh at the truth and make the truth laugh in the coming days, you will be guided to do all the right and necessary things. mandate and a poetic license to stir up far more erotic fantasies than usual. It'll be healthy for you to unleash many new thoughts about sexual experiments that would be fun to try and novel feelings you'd like to explore and people whose naked flesh you'd be interested to experience sliding and gliding against yours. But please note that the cosmic mandate and poetic license do not necessarily extend to you acting out your fantasies. The important thing is to let your imagination run wild. That will catalyze a psychic healing you didn't even realize you needed.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): In my continuing efforts

to help you want what you need and need what you want, I've collected four wise quotes that address your looming opportunities. 1. "What are you willing to give up in order to become who you really need to be?" —author Elizabeth Gilbert. 2. "Leave the door open for the unknown, the door into the dark. That's where the most important things come from." — Rebecca Solnit. 3. "You enter the extraordinary by way of the ordinary." ―Frederick Buechner. 4. "Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." ―Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Stevenson published his gothic novel Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1886. It was a bestseller, and quickly got turned into a theatrical production. In the ensuing 132 years, there have been well over a hundred further adaptations of the story into film and stage productions. Here's the funny thing about this influential work: Stevenson wrote it fast. It took him three feverish days to get the gist of it, and just another six weeks to revise. Some biographers say he was high on drugs during the initial burst, perhaps cocaine. I suspect you could also produce some robust and interesting creation in the coming weeks, Sagittarius—and you won’t even need cocaine to fuel you.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): A blogger on Tumblr

named Ffsshh composed a set of guidelines that I think will be apt and useful for you to draw on in the coming weeks. Please study these suggestions and adapt them for your healing process. "Draw stick figures. Sing off-key. Write bad poems. Sew ugly clothes. Run slowly. Flirt clumsily. Play video games on 'easy.' OK? You do not need to be good at something to enjoy it. Sometimes talent is overrated. Do things you like doing just because you like doing them. It's OK to suck."

Astro

CANCER (June 21-July 22): I've called on author

Robert Heinlein to provide your horoscope. According to my astrological analysis, his insights are exactly what you need to focus on right now. "Do not confuse 'duty' with what other people expect of you," he wrote. "They are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect. But there is no reward at all for doing what other people expect of you, and to do so is not merely difficult, but impossible."

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): What does "beauty" mean to

you? What sights, sounds, images, qualities, thoughts and behavior do you regard as beautiful? Whatever your answers might be to those questions right now, I suggest you expand and deepen your definitions in the coming weeks. You're at a perfect pivot point to invite more gorgeous, lyrical grace into your life; to seek out more elegance and charm and artistry; to cultivate more alluring, delightful magic.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarian athlete

Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player who ever lived. He was also the first to become a billionaire. But when he was growing up, he didn't foresee the glory that awaited him. For example, in high school he took a home economics class so as to acquire cooking abilities. Why? He imagined that as an adult he might have to prepare all of his own meals. His ears were so huge and ungainly, he reasoned, that no woman would want to be his wife. So the bad news was that he suffered from a delusion. The good news was that because of his delusion, he learned a useful skill. I foresee a similar progression for you, Aquarius. Something you did that was motivated by misguided or irrelevant ideas may yield positive results.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You know the expiration

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The Bible does not say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute or even a "sinner." There's no mention of her sexual proclivities at all. Delusional ideas about her arose in the Middle Ages, instigated by priests who confused her with other women in the Bible. The truth is that the Bible names her as a key ally to Christ, and the crucial witness to his resurrection. Fortunately, a number of scholars and church leaders have in recent years been working to correct her reputation. I invite you to be motivated and inspired by this transformation as you take steps to adjust and polish your own image during the coming weeks. It's time to get your public and private selves into closer alignment.

dates that appear on the labels of the prescription drugs you buy? They don't mean that the drugs lose their potency after that date. In fact, most drugs are still quite effective for at least another 10 years. Let's use this fact as a metaphor for a certain resource or influence in your life that you fear is used up or defunct. I'm guessing it still has a lot to offer you, although you will have to shift your thinking in order to make its reserves fully available. is renowned for his verbal skill. It may be best exemplified in his song "Rap God," in which he delivers 1,560 words in six minutes and four seconds, or 4.28 words per second. In one stretch, he crams in 97 words in 15 seconds, achieving a pace of 6.5 words per second. I suspect that in the coming weeks, you will also be unusually adept at using words, although your forte will be potent profundity rather than sheer speed. I encourage you to prepare by making a list of the situations where your enhanced powers of persuasion will be most useful.
