Mall Brawl When Cupertino canned its city attorney, RANDOLPH HOM, without notice or explanation this past summer, local watchdogs had a feeling there was something sketchy afoot. It looks like they were onto something.

Hom is gearing up for a wrongful termination lawsuit, claiming the city fired him so it could force through the $3 billion Vallco development despite concerns that it violates state law.

The Sand Hill Property Company’s Vallco proposal, which would transform an aging shopping mall into an urban hub of 2,400 housing units and 2.2 million square feet of office and retail space, has become an important test for a new state law (SB 35) that fast-tracks certain residential development to east the affordability crisis. But Hom told the city in April that it didn’t pass muster.

According to a pre-litigation filing, Councilman BARRY CHANG threw a fit, making verbally abusive comments—including one about a colleague, Councilman ROD SINKS, purportedly hating Hom because he’s Chinese—and sending a slew of text messages telling the embattled attorney to shut up and get in line with the city’s efforts to They greenlight the project.

Hom refused to comply with what he called unlawful orders and sounded the alarm about officials’ improper discussions with Sand Hill about its SB 35 application.

“These discussions occurred during the sensitive time period between submission of the application and the deadline upon which the city would approve it,” Hom’s claim states.

“But more than that, the friendly relationship between the [developer and the city] has flourished for over a decade.”

Cupertino spokesman BRIAN BABCOCK said the city is aware of the tort claim, but can’t comment on pending litigation.

Let Us Prey California Attorney General launches investigation into Catholic clergy abuse

T TOOK DECADES for Joey Piscitelli to come forward with his story of abuse and another three years after that to take his accused rapist, Father Stephen Whelan, to court. But the Salesians of Don Bosco—the Catholic order that employed Whelan at a Bay Area all-boys high school where he was said to have assaulted Piscitelli from 1969 to 1971—treated the allegations as a joke.

In closing arguments during a 2006 jury trial, the Salesians compared Piscitelli to James Frey, the author who famously tried to pass off his novel A Million Little Pieces as a

gritty addiction memoir. The defense produced a short video, which showed a mock book cover titled My Story of Abuse by Joey Piscitelli before flashing the word “fiction” in big, bold letters across the screen.

“They just made a mockery out of it,” Piscitelli, a 63-year-old East Bay resident, recalls. “Their lead attorney would laugh at me.”

Though he ultimately won two appeals and a $600,000 judgment, it wasn’t until a dozen years later— at 2pm on Sept. 26—that he felt a measure of vindication.

That was the day last month when high-ranking officials from California Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s office summoned Piscitelli, two fellow Bay Area members of the Survivors Network of Those Abused

by Priests—known as SNAP— and two from bishop-accountability.org to a 20th-floor conference room in a secure building on Harrison Street in downtown Oakland. Melanie Fontes Rainer, a special assistant and chief healthcare adviser to Becerra, and AG researcher Daniel Bertoni joined them at a long oval conference table along with a handful of investigators in expensive-looking suits. From a wide screen on the wall, about 10 other state agents teleconferenced in for the meeting.

“We did most of the talking,” Piscitelli says. “They asked us about clergy exchanging child porn on the internet, taking kids from county to county or across state lines. They wanted to know which bishops were responsible for certain decisions to relocate known abusers. They wanted to know about human trafficking, child trafficking.”

Finally, he thought, a moment of reckoning would come.

The long-running Catholic clergy sex abuse scandal burst into public view with the Boston Globe’s storied “Spotlight” investigation in 2002 and, closer to home, Metro’s reporting on the San Jose Diocese in the early 1990s. But

on new molestation charges, and Leonel Noia—were reassigned to the ministry even after being criminally convicted of sex abuse.

It quickly became clear, however, that McGrath left a lot out.

The diocese failed to mention clergy accused of abusing adults, including Edward Burke and Charles Connor, who in 2002 admitted to molesting developmentally disabled men at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, and William Farrington, who allegedly assaulted a Bellarmine College Preparatory School student decades prior. It also failed to name priests not directly authorized by the diocese, such as Society of St. Pius X priest Benedict Van der Putten, who allegedly molested a teen girl in 2000 at St. Aloysius Retreat House in Los Gatos.

On Sunday, the Mercury News published an exposé about an exorcist at Santa Clara’s Our Lady of Peace accused of sexually abusing a rape survivor from late 2011 through 2012.

The priest, Rev. Gerardus Hauwert Jr., reportedly offered to help the victim when she went to confession seeking forgiveness for behavior related to a trauma-induced sex addiction.

Two days later, Jeff Anderson & Associates, a Minnesota-based law firm, unveiled a 66-page report naming 263 priests in San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco dioceses credibly accused of sexually abusing kids. Using opensource data, the report identifies 135 accused abusers in the Archdiocese of San Francisco, 95 in Oakland and 33 in the San Jose diocese.

“The publicly available statistics suggest that the Bay Area dioceses, acting in coordination and in concert, subjected its parishioners to a public safety nightmare,” the report claims, calling the San Jose Diocese a “dumping ground” for “deviant priests.”

Jeff Anderson, who represents sexual assault survivor Thomas Emens in a suit against all 12 of California’s Catholic bishops says the church continues to conceal information about sexually abusive priests. The lawsuit filed earlier this month claims that the bishops continue to engage in the “geographic solution,” that is, to move problem priests between and among dioceses without notifying the community.

That shuffling around makes it difficult to determine their whereabouts—even now. “As far as I know,” Piscitelli says, “my abuser is still out there. And that’s a shame.”

the recent 900-page civil grand jury report exposing extensive coverups involving 300 “predator priests” abusing 1,000 children at six dioceses in Pennsylvania seems to mark an inflection point. While individual priests have been charged with crimes by local police and some complicit superiors pushed into retirement by the powers that be, the U.S. government never probed the criminality of higher-ranking church leadership or organizational practices that exposed children to known abusers.

With the Justice Department launching a federal inquiry into clergy abuse in Pennsylvania this past month, law enforcement has fundamentally altered its relationship with the U.S. Catholic Church by reclaiming authority from the Vatican to police its stateside criminal activities. David Hickton, former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, told CNN on Tuesday that based on questions authorities are asking about human trafficking and child porn, he believes prosecutors are planning a racketeering case against church officials—the same tactic used to take down organized crime syndicates.

Now, it appears that Becerra’s agents are looking into similar problems in California, which houses the largest population of Catholic clergy and parishioners in the country.

Public outrage and legal scrutiny have prompted church officials to make an effort to come clean. When the San Jose Diocese last week released the names of 15 priests credibly accused of pedophilia, Bishop Patrick McGrath said the move marked the end of “a culture of secrecy in the church” and the start of an era of transparency and accountability.

But events over the ensuing days made McGrath’s gesture look like something else entirely—less a show of good faith than a cynical attempt to get ahead of a quickly developing story and an unprecedented multi-jurisdictional criminal probe into clergy abuse.

Most of the abuse alleged against the list of 15 priests took place decades ago, with the most recent case in the early 2000s. Only six of the named priests are still alive: Don Flickinger, Robert Gray, Angel Mariano, Alexander Larkin, Phil Sunseri and Hernan Toro. BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH THE RACE TO succeed Santa Clara County Supervisor Ken Yeager pits a trustee of the South Bay’s largest school district against a veteran representative of Silicon Valley’s largest city. Whoever wins the election next month will join a board in charge of a $7 billion annual budget and 20,000 public employees serving 1.9 million constituents.

With just a couple weeks left until the Nov. 6 midterms, here’s a look at where the candidates—San Jose Unified trustee Susan Ellenberg and San Jose Councilman Don Rocha—stand on the issues and how they would govern if elected to the Board of Supervisors.

DON ROCHA A lifelong South Bay resident who graduated from San Diego State

with a degree in political science, Don Rocha has worked in public service for the better part of two decades. After six years at the city’s now-defunct Redevelopment Agency, the father of three went on to serve on the Cambrian School District governing board before his election to the City Council in 2010.

Rocha said he’s running for supervisor to bolster services for the region’s most vulnerable residents and to tackle housing affordability, homelessness, traffic, growth and public safety. The terming-out District 9 councilman has repeatedly stressed the importance of taking “a regional approach” to address the issues, in part by reviving a countywide commission comprising officials

from local cities to tackle housing and transit.

Priority number one as a supervisor, Rocha said, would be to make sure $950 million in bond revenue from Measure A, which voters passed in 2016 to build permanent housing for the homeless, gets spent efficiently and effectively.

SUSAN ELLENBERG A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native who graduated from Barnard College before earning her law degree at Columbia University, Susan Ellenberg worked for years as an attorney before she felt a calling to community service that led her to elected office.

Ellenberg, a social justice teacher at Yavneh Day School, became deeply

involved in the San Jose Unified School District while her three kids were still in elementary school. In 2014, with her youngest daughter a freshman at Lincoln High, she took the plunge and ran for the district’s Area 2 seat.

Her work in the ensuing years inspired her to eye the supe seat because so many of the issues at the school district overlapped with those at the county. Homelessness and housing affordability, she said, had a direct impact on the families she served in SJUSD. In addition to strengthening services for the neediest residents, Ellenberg said she would like to expand oversight of the county’s troubled jails and implement sweeping reforms in the foster care system.

Test of Medal San Jose State University honors alumni 50 years after their Olympic protest

AST WEEK, San Jose State University celebrated one of the most historic anniversaries in campus history, and perhaps even San Jose history as well. Exactly 50 years earlier, on Oct. 16, 1968, SJSU Spartans Tommie Smith and John Carlos stood on the Olympic podium in Mexico City after winning gold and bronze medals in the men’s 200m event.

During the national anthem, Smith and Carlos each bowed their heads and raised a black-gloved fist

into the air, reflecting the strength of the human spirit and cementing what’s now one of the most iconic images in Olympic history. The third person on the podium, Australian Peter Norman, stood motionless with the silver medal around his neck, but in full support. Smith and Carlos were also part of the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR), led by SJSU sociologist Harry Edwards, a group formed to expose how the US exploited black athletes, a group that almost boycotted the 1968 Olympic Games.

came from all over the world, inside and outside of sports. On Wednesday, three provocative panel sessions reflected on the history and future of athlete activism, all organized by SJSU’s Institute for the Study of Sport, Society and Social Change. The next night, Smith and Carlos together received the annual Tower Award, the highest accolade given by the university.

Each panel session provided inspiring stories, but the first panel, titled “The Voices of 1968,” included not just Smith and Carlos but also Wyomia Tyus, the first person ever to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 100-meter dash, in 1964 and 1968. Tyus was in the stadium watching Smith and Carlos during their historic protest, noticing how they walked out to the podium without shoes, and then raised their fists into the air during the national anthem.

“The stadium got completely quiet,” Tyus recalled. “It was just eerie, just no one was saying anything. And as they continued

to play the national anthem, you could hear people talking and then you could hear people booing, you could hear people whistling, you could hear people cheering, and I just started feeling, ‘Oh man, I hope nothing happens to them. They’re right out in the open. I hope no one does anything.’”

By now, reporters have asked Smith and Carlos ad nauseam about those moments, and there on the stage, both of the legendary track and field medalists spoke about the eerie silence. They cast the events in spiritual terms of suffering, pain, sacrifice and redemption. They claimed fear was never a factor, as their lives were already being threatened due to the potential boycott.

Carlos recalled the eerie silence with a tinge of gallows humor: “Before we went out, I told Tommie, I said, ‘Tommie, they’ve been threatening our lives.’ I said, ‘Remember, man, we are trained to listen to the gun. When we go out and we do what we do, everyone is going to be in shock.’ And that’s what [people are] talking about in terms of that void. Everyone became deadly silent, they were in shock, they never seen anything like this. And I said to Tommie, ‘If they’re going to shoot, they’re going to shoot in that void. Listen for the gun. We’ve been trained.’”

Also on the panel was Paul Hoffman, member of the Harvard University rowing team, an allCaucasian group that supported the Olympic Project for Human Rights.

Hoffman was the one who gave an OCHR button to Peter Norman as the Aussie walked out to the podium.

Norman then famously wore the button during the protest.

“It’s extremely rare that you have the actual actors and participants in a historic moment, a historic year, on stage to discuss their experiences and the impact of half a century of thinking about that impact,” said Edwards of the morning’s discussion.

The next night, Smith and Carlos received the Tower Award to a standing ovation. At the reception, I told Carlos that I was not yet alive during the 1968 Olympics, but I was in the womb, showing my support.

I was listening for the gun. And he laughed out loud.

The POW! WOW! public art project is brightening up San Jose with a slew of massive murals

ISING HIGH ABOVE the intersection of East San Carlos and South Second streets, a massive crane delivers a load of materials to the top of The Graduate, a new apartment tower geared toward San Jose State University students.

The construction site is buzzing with workers. Some are fitting floor-to-ceiling windows above; others hammer away inside the giant development.

Directly across Second Street, another piece of heavy equipment carries two men up and down a four-story wall. Like the crews at The Graduate, Raoul and Davide Perre are feverishly working to meet a deadline. But unlike the contractors drilling, welding and pipe-fitting, the Perre brothers are working with hundreds of cans of spray paint, methodically constructing a gargantuan mural. It is a psychedelic swirl of interlocking organic shapes. Lotus flowers, fish, a throbbing heart and what appears to be a cartoon horse ripple across more than half of the wall.

The Perres—who are twins and go by the collective nom de plume How and Nosm—began this project on Saturday, Oct. 20. By the time the week is out they will have completely saturated the 12,225 square foot wall in color.

How and Nosm are not alone this week. They are but one of 25 individuals and teams of artists who have descended upon the city to produce large murals and other public works of art as part of POW! WOW! San Jose. This year marks the second annual installment of the festival. Last year, the inaugural event was responsible for 20 murals all over San Jose.

Stroll along South Autumn Street near the Poor House Bistro, and you’ll find three distinctive murals from last year. Adele Renault, known for painting “realistic portraits of pigeons and people,” created an avianthemed wall with dozens and dozens of overlapping feathers. These pigeons

must be huddled in a bunch. She magnifies the size and iridescence of their wings with a gradient that goes from aqua to violet.

Jet Martinez’s tropical blue mural is a flowery fantasia. He’s from a small beach town in Veracruz, Mexico, and the sea infuses the spirit of his work.

In comparison, Casey Gray went for a minimal effect that’s just as striking.

The purple silhouette he’s painted looks like a wavy robot who’s escaped from an ’80s video game into the real world. He gives the creature a red and orange heart and has him float above a green flame.

While all of these murals bring vibrant color and interesting designs to the buildings they adorn, POW! WOW! is about much more than brightening facades. The goal is to create an engaged and responsive community by transforming a mere physical landmark into one that’s visually stunning.

“As artists we have power,” says Juan Carlos Araujo, who runs Empire Seven Studios, is one of POW! WOW! San Jose’s co-founders and the festival’s director of curation.

Araujo explains that murals can help revitalize neighborhoods suffering from high crime and vice. “We’re contributing by adding paint to our neighborhoods and giving something back to those neighborhoods.”

BELONGING In this way the festival’s organizers aim to curate murals that speak directly to the neighborhoods they beautify and give residents a sense of belonging through a shared piece of aesthetic identity.

In some instances, the localized inspiration can be quite literal. In 2017, Jeff Gress played off of the actual address of the wall he was painting:

44 S Almaden Ave., better known to locals as the nightclub LVL 44.

Approaching the back of the club from Post Street, Gress’ piece is impossible to miss. A giant 44 is rendered in 3D perspective and floats upon a dark void, the numbers suggesting some sort of giant starship moving through interstellar space.

Gress, a Hawaii-based artist who has been with POW! WOW! since the beginning and serves as the organization’s operations director, says the festival helps local artists make meaningful connections, both locally and internationally.

“In the beginning we were just doing the event for the sake of creating art and engaging with a wider audience,” he writes via email of the first POW! WOW!, held in Hawaii in 2011. “Money wasn’t on our minds, as it felt like a bunch of friends just getting together and

Today, the POW! WOW! parent organization helps put together festivals in multiple U.S. cities and countries around the world, including Detroit, Washington, D.C., Taiwan and Japan.

For his part, Araujo is pleased to be a part of the San Jose chapter of POW! WOW!, and he hopes that the community will appreciate the work that they’ve done for years to come, as the murals created by POW! WOW! artists adds to a growing outdoor art gallery stretching across San Jose.

IMPACT The How and Nosm piece is the largest piece in this year’s festival.

However, the scale of most of the murals produced by POW! WOW! artists is impressive—especially when one considers how quickly the works go up. This is part of the event’s power. One week the walls are blank, and the next week the murals are up and making an impression.

The blitz of public art seems

tailormade to address a problem that spiraled out of control when the city’s once all-powerful redevelopment agency exercised planning and design control over a downtown building boom that began in the late 1980s. The agency enforced a conservative architectural preference, banned rooftop logo signs and enforced a uniform pallette. The Mediterranean color scheme earned the city the moniker “Tan Jose,” first adopted on the street and later picked up by newspaper columnists.

However, for several years now, thanks Araujo’s efforts with his Empire Seven Studios as well as local arts non-profit The Exhibition District downtown murals have been on the rise. E7 has been responsible for curating many wellknown Japantown murals—like the waves washing over the side of the Santo Market—while The Exhibition District continues to sponsor large works, including the mural covering the side of the De Anza Hotel. The ExD is also behind Local Color, the artist incubator, studio space and performance venue which has reactivated the large vacant space left by the former Ross Dress For Less store at 27 S. First St.

lives, and not only provide an aesthetic enhancement to a community.”

Although it wasn’t part of POW! WOW! last year, a mural at Discovery Meadow will soon receive a San Jose “Creative Impact Award.” AdamsHapner points out that “Sophie Holding the World Together” by El Mac, in collaboration with the Propeller Group, “signals what a community wants to express for itself, what it sees as its ideals in terms of what it wants to focus on and celebrate. It really helps to express a vision for what this city's identity is.”

CLOUT

Local Color is now home to many artists’ creative workstations—including Metro contributor Jeremiah Harada and Jorge Camacho, one of the San Jose-based artists working on a mural for this year’s POW! WOW!. This year, Camacho, who goes by J. Duh, is working alongside another San Jose artist, Francis Marin, on a mural at 1068 The Alameda.

Just as the Exhibition District has done with its work on murals and with the Local Color creative space, POW! WOW! also consults with local municipalities and businesses to get permission for its projects.

In 2017, Araujo helped to spearhead the San Jose installment of POW! WOW! when he met with Kerry Adams-Hapner, San Jose’s director of cultural affairs, to talk about his vision for the festival. One year later, Adams-Hapner confirms that the results of the first POW! WOW! San Jose were positive.

“Broadly, POW! WOW! celebrates artists,” she says. “It demonstrates the power of what art can bring to a neighborhood, to a community.

Beyond helping to articulate collective community ideals and bring neighborhoods and artists together, POW! WOW! also helps to raise artist profiles.

Kristin Farr’s POW! WOW! San Jose 2017 mural lives at 490 W. San Carlos St. on one side of the San Jose Learning Center. It looks like a cheerful mandala that’s been dipped in a bath of molten candy.

She describes the work as a collection of “abstract, geometric designs.” The connective colors—red, purple, teal, green, blue—remain hot and vibrant on the wall. If you look online for barn quilts and hex signs, you’ll see that her work is related to them.

Last year wasn’t Farr’s first time creating a mural for a POW! WOW! franchise. Farr says she’s been to the festivals in Hawaii (twice), Taiwan and Worcester, Mass. While the festival doesn’t pay artists for completing their murals, it does provide flights for out-of-town painters, as well as lodging and supplies. For her it has been entirely worthwhile.

“It's not glamorous all the time,” she says recalling the influx of cockroaches that would well up around her feet while she painted at night last year, “but it sure feels good at the end. It always makes you feel like a rockstar when you do a big project like that.”

On top of the personal vindication of completing a large public work, there are other rewards, Farr says. “When you do a project for free and you're an early-on muralist, it's actually good. You

Professionally, POW! WOW! has also furthered Farr’s career. “The city of Walnut Creek just funded the first city mural there and chose me to do it, and I got paid really well. I never would be in that position if it weren't for POW! WOW!” She feels confident that “for the artists and the communities that we’re painting in, and the organizers, and the kind of family that it builds is really invaluable. Especially as an up and coming artist, a POW! WOW! gave me my first chance to do a mural in public—my first five chances. Now I get paid to do really big murals.”

Harumo Sato agrees. The mural she is painting near the Vietnamese restaurant Dac Phuc, located at 194 W. Santa Clara St. is the first she’s ever done. And this year marks the first time she’s participated in a POW! WOW! When Sato, who is originally from Japan, first moved to the area, it was hard for her to make a living. But she found support from Empire Seven Studios and San Jose Made (SJMADE).

An organizer at SJMADE asked her

to design a poster for one of their craft fairs, which led to a booth of her own. After that, she started to sell her illustrations. Now, she says, “Surprisingly, I’m a full-time artist. I’m very grateful to have found supportive artists and great customers and friends.

I didn’t expect to have such things.”

GROWING PAINS There is a bittersweet irony underlying the story of POW! WOW! San Jose.

For all it does to help artists, and in spite of the fact that the festival is run at a grassroots level by longtime boosters of the local arts community, the movement is supported by the same forces of gentrification that make it hard for working artists to live in Silicon Valley.

The luxury student apartments that are now ascending across from How and Nosm’s mural will almost certainly one day be neighbors to another high rise, which will demand the demolition of the twins’ four story canvas at 300 S. First St. That as-yet-undetermined development will also swallow up the building that now houses the independent art gallery Anno Domini, just next door.

Araujo and his partner Jennifer Ahn will soon shutter their own gallery, Empire Seven Studios, which was itself a casualty to another large housing project. Back in March of 2016, not long after he had completed a large construction project inside the leased warehouse space that has been home to Empire Seven since 2007, Araujo was informed that the entire block had been sold to a developer.

The San Jose-based HMH is currently in the planning stages of what it is calling its 7th and Empire project—a four-story, 97-unit multifamily residential building.

One might also take a cynical view of Google’s sponsorship of POW! WOW! San Jose. After all, the internet giant’s planned development in central San Jose will certainly push up rents throughout downtown, squeezing lower income residents.

It’s a familiar cycle in the Bay Area: as wages rise for young professionals, those professionals, in turn, seek out lifestyle upgrades. Taprooms and brunch spots open; murals appear; and new music venues find success; even as servers, visual artists and musicians struggle to make ends meet.

But two years removed from the news that the land beneath his warehouse had been bought out from under him, Araujo says sees no reason for cynicism. He concedes that some will be displaced by Google, but points out that plenty of local businesses will benefit.

“I could sit here and complain about every tech company in town,” Araujo says. But he doesn’t believe any meaningful change comes from crying over spilled milk. “We have to be like them. We have to be investors.

We have to be funders. We have to be the people investing in our city.”

Araujo says he and the folks at HMH are on good terms now and they are talking about working with the Empire Seven brand as they move forward with their project. The company’s website says that the new development will have a “large mural wall” incorporated into its design.

“Shit—I never thought could ever happen,” Araujo says, before adding that he has every reason to be hopeful about the future of his gallery and visual art on the whole in San Jose.

“I’m not trying to learn how to sell out, but I’m trying to learn how to stay relevant and sustainable.”

Live (or undead) entertainment includes acrobats, BMX bikers, fire dancers, drummers, and the dark comedy of Ed Alonzo, the Second Greatest Showman. Of course, the roller coasters are there for anyone who needs extra reasons to scream.

First released in 1981, this low budget, high gore horror flick has clawed its way to a cult classic franchise—extending across multiple films, comics, video games, a television series and several stage adaptations. In this comic musical, audiences can expect to come away bloodied… well, cornstarched… if they’re sitting in the “splash zone.”

Traditionally, mariachi as a musical form comes from a specific place. It is played on specific instruments, and its practitioners often limit performances to specific spaces within a specific region. New York-based Mariachi Flor de Toloache maintain a rotating ensemble of all women performers— all from highly diverse backgrounds— and infuse their western Mexican arrangements with elements of rock, jazz and hip-hop. They are just as comfortable performing at a local cultural center as they are playing with Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach at the Bowery Ballroom. As such, they are connecting with audiences in a manner that straightforward mariachi acts couldn’t hope to match. (NV)

As part of a string of local celebrations of El Dia de los Muertos, the School of Arts & Culture at Mexican Heritage Plaza presents a walking tour of beautifully arranged altars and other art installations at various locations on the three blocks surrounding the MHP. After taking in the altars and art, visitors can stick around for a cumbia dance party with live music. The following day, La Ultima Parada kicks off at noon, featuring food, drinks and a wide array of merchants and artisans selling Dia de los Muertos-themed items and other works. (NV)

German-born pianist Axel Schmitt, a faculty member at Mountain View’s Community School of Music and Arts, has at least one heavy lift on his bucket list: He’s attempting to perform every one of Beethoven’s piano sonatas—that’s 32 total— before the 250th anniversary of the great composer’s birth in 2020. On Sunday, Schmitt presents his third concert of Beethoven sonatas, this one checking five more off the list. If you’re keeping score, that’s Opus Nos. 49-1, 49-2, 14-1, 14-2 and 22.

Pivotal Moves Ballet Folklorico de Mexico celebrates tradition, mythology and history

HOUGH THE NATION we now call Mexico was formally founded a little more than 200 years ago, the country has a vast and storied history. Recognized by archaeologists as one of a handful of “cradles of civilization,” the region was home to some of the very first urban settlements anywhere on the planet.

Among the many accomplishments

of the pre-Columbian Mesoamerican people: the creation of a complex hieroglyphic system, the development of mathematics and the domestication of cacao. The arrival of Spanish conquistadors was devastating for the indigenous population. However, while the Europeans attempted to impose their worldview on the continent wholesale, the final result of the often violent intercontinental clash was a new and unique culture—one that incorporates elements of Spanish,

Afro-Caribbean and native customs into a colorful panoply.

This is the world that Ballet Folklorico de Mexico founder Amalia Hernández Navarro set out to capture when she created her Mexico City-based dance company back in 1962, according to her grandson, Salvador Lopez.

Lopez joined the company in 1985 and took over as executive director after Hernández’s death in 2000. He says he mostly works to maintain his abuela’s vision, while adding modern flourishes here and there.

The troupe will perform a program that touches on many of the country’s most pivotal historical moments and potent myths when it comes to the Hammer Theatre Center this Sunday.

Dancers will depict the Aztec discovery of the Valley of Mexico, home to the ancient Aztec city of Teotihuacan and present-day Mexico City. In another well-known routine that has been with the

company since its earliest years, performers will re-enact the a deer hunt. Of course, there will be many flowing, colorful dresses and live mariachi players.

The company is still celebrating the 100th birthday of Hernández, which was in 2017, and this current tour serves as something of a retrospective.

Lopez says he believes the dancers in his group serve as cultural ambassadors to Mexico. “Dance is an international language,” he says.

“This is a deep expression of how we see our own culture.”

Audiences come to see a horror film, stay to see a drama in new ‘Halloween’

LASHER FILMS never seemed particularly frightening, even in their heyday circa 1975-85, which David Gordon Green’s Halloween tries to commemorate. Like flaunting the silly Satanic emblems of heavy metal, it was more of a tribal custom—and the deeper you were in the country, the more their paraphernalia repelled boors and evangelicals.

John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) flaunted the same old Knifey McKniferson that all later sequels and ripoffs came to use. But it was better

looking than it needed to be, and keyed up with an unsettling synth score. It’s blase star, Jamie Lee Curtis, had a haunting air of trauma, getting viewers into the proper frame of mind even before the bodies started falling.

This 2018 version ignores the many sequels, suggesting that killer Michael Myers has been in a dormant state since he was arrested at the end of the first Halloween. We see him in a mental hospital courtyard, where maniacs are chained to cement chunks the size of car engine blocks.

The beast is awakened by a pair of dunderheaded British podcasters calling themselves investigative journalists. To try to break him out of his catatonia, they wave Myers’ now rotted pale mask at him.

Curtis’ Laurie Strode always knew he’d be back. She’s now a 60-ish hermit hiding in a rural fortress she built. Dealing with the visiting English idiots, Laurie shrugs off the guilt about how her own daughter Karen was taken away by protective services when she was 12: “If she’s prepared for the horror of this world, I can live with that.” Being stalked by an unkillable maniac might be hard to imagine. It’s a little easier to understand the horror of being raised in a bunker by a prepper.

Now grown up, Karen (Judy Greer) is a woman trying to keep everything normal, and failing at the job. It’s clear the whitemasked beast’s last opponent will be Laurie’s granddaughter Allyson (the promising Andi Matichak).

The men will be out of the game— from Alyson’s father (Toby Huss), a fountain of dad jokes, to Cameron (Dylan Arnold), Alison’s boyfriend, who is in drag this Halloween as Bonnie Parker to Allyson’s Clyde Barrow. Green and his co-writers are aware of the gender-switch in this slasher for 2018: the men die, and the women turn the tide.

Green (Pete’s Dragon, et al) isn’t

a brilliant pop-up engineer, but he provides a great deal of texture, and a credible idea of how the cycle of violence turns. The vivid autumnal colors give this a chill, and the titles are played over a reverse time lapse of a jack o’lantern rotting: coming back from the grave, or at least the compost heap.

Myers, nicknamed “The Shape” to make an already abstract threat even more so, is full of the usual contradictions. He lumbers like Frankenstein’s monster and yet he’s faster than the eye can see. Green gives the film some air with relaxed moments, such as the cozy dialogue between a young babysitter (Virginia Gardner) and the bratty kid she’s minding (Jibrail Nantambu). Two lazing cops on stakeout discuss sandwiches.

One insists that it’s the bread wrapping that makes it a sandwich; inside could be anything from Vietnamese tidbits to peanut butter. As critic J. Hoberman once noted, the slasher audience was the most democratic audience in the world: They didn’t care who got it, as long as someone got it.

So per Hoberman, the killings are the bread. But what fills this sandwich is Curtis’ particular strength and her shame at the way she makes a loud scene at a celebratory dinner for Alyson. Her Laurie is both vulnerable and formidable.

It’s easy to see why some fans were disappointed with this: They went to see a horror film and they ended up with a drama. Some of the murders have pathos to them. Some of it is a little exasperating. Laurie, who turned her house into a stockade of closed-circuit cameras and floodlights, nevertheless keeps the interiors dark; most people wouldn’t give that monster a square inch of shadow.

Halloween isn’t scary, but like the film that started it, it’s moody. What does survive is the malice endemic to the genre. Here is the pessimistic side of the ancient cinematic pleasure of watching Buster Keaton or 007 bouncing back from certain death. Here, instead are a series of morbid resurrections, featuring the unkillable quality of motiveless, mute, faceless evil.

WORD CRIMES ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ plays forgery for fun and profit.

Make It A Double GOD BLESS ALL the actors who aren’t there because of their looks. The literally catty tragicomedy Can You Ever Forgive Me? commences nicely with Melissa McCarthy playing Lee Israel, surly, shabby and frumpy at a publisher’s office—meeting a deadline at 3 a.m. with the help of a big glass of something on the rocks. She’s fired for drinking on the job, even at that hour.

As she leaves, a younger employee mutters “If I ever get like that, kill me.”

Lee snaps back: “If you ask me nicely, I’ll kill you now.”

This true life tale of a drinker with a writing problem is Can You Ever set in 1991. Print hasn’t keeled over and died yet, but Lee, Forgive Me? who’d previously published a number of celebrity bios, is having trouble landing an advance.

When vet bills for her ancient cat press her, Lee goes to The Aquarius, sell a prized possession. It’s a personal note from Katherine Palo Alto Hepburn from the days when the two had collaborated on an autobiography. The money is good enough that Lee falls into a unique field of crime—forging celebrity letters to sell to the local bookstores. She recruits her seedy drinking buddy, Jack (Richard E. Grant), but the scam turns out to have consequences. It also blights Lee’s potential friendship (friendship, or more) with pretty bookstore owner Anna (Dolly Wells), who has writing ambitions of her own.

There’s been studio-generated Oscar buzz for the untrustworthy barfly Grant plays, the kind of man who introduces himself as “Jack Hock: big cock”—dodgy and gay and British and drunk, a mountebank with fingerless Fagin gloves. Why not honor him now? He’s a worldleading actor of smooth lowlives—he’s played wastrels ever since Withnail and I (1987) and poor Gordon Comstock, the ill-starred writer from Keep the Aspidistra Flying, a.k.a. A Merry War. Oddly, the mood of Can You Ever Forgive Me is closer to Orwell’s book about the writing life than the legitimate adaptation.

The elegant soundtrack sports jazz crooner Blossom Dearie, the ill-fated country rocker Spade Cooley and a bit of Justin Bond covering Lou Reed’s “Goodnight Ladies” in a deserted cabaret. Ornery and salty as the film is, it has a cool counterpoint of loneliness to it. And it shows how lost even the recent past is—it has the sense of New York when it was New York, when it was gritty and bad, and seemingly every business sign was missing a letter or a light. —Richard von Busack

HE FIRST TIME Evan Ziporyn heard David Bowie’s album Blackstar, it was from the other side of a wall. The Boston composer was at an artists retreat in Florida when he heard his neighbor in the next room playing music way too loud.

Ziporyn plays bass clarinet, and he was trying to practice. No one would have blamed him if he yelled, banged on the wall or pleaded for quiet in a less aggressive manner. But he didn’t do any of that.

“I remember vividly practicing to

it through the wall,” he says. “He was listening to it obsessively. So I just played along with it.”

Ziporyn’s decision to go with the flow turned what could have been an annoyance into a bold new artistic direction. On Nov. 7, he comes to Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall, leading his 26-person Ambient Orchestra (featuring cellist and soloist Maya Beiser) in a symphonic interpretation of Bowie’s Blackstar, presented to his audience just as he first heard it through the wall, from its first song to its last.

Two days after Blackstar was released in January 2016, Bowie died.

Ziporyn got the news through an

alert on his cellphone in the middle of the night. “I just thought it was a dream,” he says.

The Chicago-born Ziporyn, 58, is an accomplished post-minimalist composer and musician, best known for his work interpreting Balinese gamelan at MIT, where he is a professor, and for his contributions to the avant-garde ensemble Bang On a Can. Like millions around the world, he is a big Bowie fan. Unlike many others, however, Ziporyn’s work brought him into the orbit of the pop-music icon. Bowie had developed an interest in Bang On a Can, and the two musicians met more than once.

“He was an astonishingly normal guy,” Ziporyn recalls.

News of Bowie’s death—of liver cancer, two days after his 69th birthday—deeply rattled his fan base, including Ziporyn. “Slowly, over the course of a couple of days, I began connecting to all sorts of people, from different parts of my life,” he says. “And everyone was in a state of shock. I kept thinking, ‘This is really

important. We need to do something with all this energy.’”

When Ziporyn returned to Boston from his Florida retreat, he thought immediately of doing a Bowie tribute in the classical world. He reached out to his contacts with the idea; within a couple of weeks he had signed up 80 musicians, and the Ambient Orchestra was born.

But then there was the question of the program. Bowie’s music had been interpreted by orchestras a couple of times over the years, but nothing felt right. “We didn’t want to do the standard pops concert where you get a Led Zeppelin-like band and just add some strings to it,” he explains. “Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But to treat this music like we treat all the other music in our lives, we had to find our own take on it.”

That’s when he again thought of the music he first heard coming through the wall. It had to be Blackstar.

Bowie’s final album will be forever associated with his death, but judging from its critical reception, it has slowly emerged as one of the strongest works of his career. “It’s a self-requiem,” Ziporyn says, “but it’s also something else. It’s kind of a guide to confronting death. He made sure to get it out before he died, because, in a certain way, it was preparing us for his death.”

Ziporyn’s Ambient Orchestra will not feature a singer, but instead cellist Beiser takes on Bowie’s vocal parts—“Maya’s kind of our Ziggy,” he says—and he’s enlisted a number of young musicians who feel comfortable traversing the idioms of classical, jazz and pop.

“What I was really taken with is right there in the first song,” he says of Blackstar. “That song moves through this central, swaggering, bluesy thing toward this humanism on his part, which is to talk to us about what he is experiencing, what it’s like to think of yourself as moving from life to death.

And musically, I don’t feel like I’m giving up on anything. I feel like my whole musical being is called on. And what more can I ask for?”
