While making my way over a crosswalk at Minnesota and Newport avenues, the flashing lights alerted drivers who fly down that street to slow down or stop (optional! it’s a yellow light!), and wait for pedestrians. I was walking as quickly as I reasonably could with a full coffee in one hand and a dog on a leash trying to yank my arm out of its socket in the other. You, a pasty-faced, brown-haired white dude in a beat-up late-model Toyota, somehow felt the need to yell out the window for me to walk faster—an order you punctuated with an expletive. Even if I was shuffling across the street with a walker, who taught you that you were so special that you didn’t have to wait at crosswalks for pedestrians, that you were entitled to drive at whatever speed or in whatever fashion suited your disposition? Who taught you that you could plow through traffic at your discretion, probably because you are too lazy to apply the brakes? Spoiler alert: You don’t own the roads, and will probably remain dumb and angry for the rest of your life. At least that’s my consolation.

Poll Party

The race for Santa Clara County’s District 4 supervisor will pit an entrenched politician against a corporate shill. At least, those are the caricatured negatives being tested in a new poll in the contest between San Jose Councilman DON ROCHA and San Jose Unified trustee SUSAN ELLENBERG. The survey was presumably commissioned by Ellenberg’s camp—though sources wouldn’t confirm that one way or the other—and asked prospective voters whether they’d be more likely to vote against a candidate after reading each prompt.

“Rocha is a career politician and does not have any substantial experience or education outside of politics,” one read. “Ellenberg is supported by corporate leaders and she will put their interests ahead of average citizens,” another said.

Others fished for reaction about Ellenberg’s East Coast heritage and graduation from “an expensive, elite New York law school,” her relative lack of political experience or how she “used more than $120,000 of her personal wealth to buy the election in June.”

Much of the poll seems to stem from talking points that arose during the primary, when candidates DOMINIC CASERTA and PIERLUIGI OLIVERIO, respectively, touted their fourth- and second-generation roots in the district. Of course, that kind of messaging might not resonate as much as it used to, given the county’s increasingly diverse foreign-born and otherwise nonnative population.

Though Fly was unable to ascertain which statements gained the most traction with voters, the survey offers a glimpse of what’s likely to end up on campaign mailers later on in the election cycle.

Reading Rainbow San Jose library’s first-ever drag queen storytime was not without controversy

T TAKES MORE than a few minutes to transform into drag without a proper dressing room, which is why Talon Marks arrives a bit late to storytime at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library in downtown San Jose. By the time she emerges in the children’s wing, the roomful of kids are chanting her name in anticipation. In a red and black polka-dot dress, shiny black pumps and a wig teased into a three-inch pompadour that matches her beard, she towers over the tiniest tots in the front row.

As she warms up the crowd with a

chant—“bread and butter, marmalade and jam, let’s say hello as loud as we can”—the kids analyze their guest speaker’s striking appearance.

“She sounds kind of like a boy,” a child who looks about 4 muses. “She is a boy,” another calls back from a few rows up.

More than 400 people turned out last Saturday morning for the city’s first-ever Drag Queen Story Time, according to the library’s count, bringing their sleeping 3-month-olds, chipper toddlers and reluctant 12-yearolds. I met a dad who wandered in with his baby unaware that storytime was happening, but he said he was glad to have stumbled upon it.

The event, a collaboration with Silicon Valley Pride, was San Jose’s inaugural version of the internationally popular Drag Queen

Story Hour (DQSH), which started three years ago in San Francisco and now runs events in major cities and towns as rural as Peoria, Illinois, and Winooski, Vermont. Though San Jose’s storytime series is unaffiliated with the DQSH organization, the vibe felt similar: songs, youngsters wiggling on parents’ laps and an elaborately done-up presenter reading children’s books about inclusivity and being true to oneself.

“We’ve seen other cities do it,” Silicon Valley Pride Chief Operations Officer Nicole Altamirano said. “We approached the library and they were totally on board with it, so we were super happy it turned out good.”

At craft tables set up in a corner away from the crowd, kids decorated cut-out paper crowns to wear on their heads as they listened. Rachel Warner took her 5-year-old daughter, who’s autistic, because she wanted her to see a unique person in a welcoming environment.

“Inclusivity is really important to me,” Warner said. “There’s more than one type of person.”

San Jose Library Director Jill Bourne greeted families at the door, alongside a police officer in a suit jacket. “We try to treat this like it’s every other program, but it’s really special,” Bourne told the

For queer parents like Mueller, the event fostered a sense of community.

Recent New Hampshire transplants Sarah and Gabrielle Leone brought their 2-year-old son Mateo, who— sharply dressed in a newsboy cap— toddled toward Marks to get a closer look as she read Worm Loves Worm, a book by J.J. Austrian about two smitten wrigglers who tie the knot. Back east, Gabrielle said, they had “buddies for him that had two moms,” and they hoped Drag Queen Story Time would offer a chance to find more friends in Silicon Valley.

In California, 27 percent of youth ages 12-17 identify as gender nonconforming, according to a recent UCLA study. That’s 796,000 people who could likely use affirmation and examples of what gender nonconforming adulthood could look like. Younger kids benefit as well.

“We know, based on the child development studies, that gender begins to be constructed early in childhood, around age 3-6,” explained Maribel Martinez, director of the Santa Clara County Office of LGBT Affairs.

“For a young person who is exploring gender or acknowledging their gender, having positive role models in places where they feel safe to be their full self is really important to their development.”

After another book, You’re Wearing That to School? by Lynn Plourde, about a hippo who wears a sparkly outfit despite peer pressure, Marks accepts a bouquet of flowers, beauty queen style.

Though babies start to get fussy, the mood in the room feels jubilant.

“You can see there’s a big turnout here, lots of people,” said Jeremy Corrales, who arrived with his partner, Justin, and year-old niece. Corrales was scheduled to perform at the next morning’s Drag Brunch Sunday at SoFA Market. “Everyone’s smiling, and there’s so many kids.”

It was enough to bring Mueller to tears.

“Every freedom march, every pride, every protest, all these years has led to this day,” he said. “This is beautiful. This is what we’ve been fighting for all of my adult life.”

In honor of Silicon Valley Pride month, the library will host two more drag storytimes, one at 11am on Aug. 18 and another at the same time on Sept. 15.

Despite the strong show of support, however, the event was not without controversy. Once word spread about the event, the announcements on the library’s website lit up with comments calling drag “abnormal behavior” and “a mental illness,” comparing drag queens to rapists and accusing the library of promoting child abuse.

Several people threatened a protest.

Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco and City Council members Raul Peralez and Don Rocha posted supportive statements about the event on Facebook. Peralez shared a video of a similar event in the Bronx, prompting an onslaught of both angry and delighted responses—116 by press time.

In a rare step, Peralez jumped into the fray in defense of the glamorous spin on traditional storytime, saying, “If my son wants to become a Drag Queen one day it won’t be because I took him to hear an inclusive story at the library. But hearing that story may end up helping him to stand up to bullies one day, bullies who can’t get over their own stigmas and learn to accept others.”

In contrast, when former city employee and stay-at-home mom Zeba Ebrahimi tagged Mayor Sam Liccardo in a tweet calling the event “a nightmare,” the mayor thanked her and tweeted, “I’m looking into it now to understand more of what this is about.”

Liccardo did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

The initial backlash did not translate into a physical strike, to Bourne’s relief, and parents who attended the story hour dismissed the detractors as reactionary.

“You know what? We’re in 2018,” said Martina Martinez, a straight mom who brought her 6-year-old daughter, 9-year-old son and 8-yearold nephew to hear Marks tell her tales in her showy red get-up. “I want that for my kids, to live their lives and respect other people’s.”

Raymond Mueller—a candidate for the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District board of trustees and a gay parent of a 13-year-old boy—said he encourages critical parents to open their minds.

“People fear those things they don’t understand like a child fears the dark,” he said. “I would hope

Ruling to Upend Santa Clara’s Political Landscape

BY WINONA RAJAMOHAN A judge on Monday ordered Santa Clara to split into six election districts to end an at-large voting system that has excluded candidates of color from the city council. Though residents of Asian descent comprise about 40 percent of Santa Clara’s population, not a single one has been elected to the council since the city adopted its charter in 1951.

The ruling by Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Thomas Kuhnle concludes litigation brought against the city by a group of Asian American residents who claimed the at-large election system violated federal and state voting rights laws. “It’s the right decision, and it’s long overdue,” Richard Konda of the Asian Law Alliance said after the court issued its ruling.

Kuhnle said that although he’s concerned about Santa Clara’s apparent violations of state and federal election laws, he chose the city’s six-district proposal out of consideration for “the

rights of people in California to form charter cities, and the greater degree of autonomy charter cities provide.”

The city had initially attempted to address concerns of minority groups by presenting a two-district system through Measure A on the June 5 ballot, but the measure failed to pass. Wesley Mukoyama—a 44-year Santa Clara resident and one of the lead plaintiffs in the case—said he opposed the city’s two-district compromise measure and hoped having more districts would help “the minority people have the chance to fill the city council.”

The plaintiffs had pushed for a sevendistrict map with a rotating mayor appointed by council members, but the plaintiffs’ attorney, Robert Rubin, said in court Friday that they “can live with six districts.” Though the city pitched the six-district plan, it wasn’t what the council majority led by Mayor Lisa Gillmor had hoped.

The mayor called the decision a “confusing situation” that the city will have to look into before deciding how to move forward. “The city will continue to comply with the judge’s order so far as it is able to, given that it is only partial direction,” she said.

Regardless, the ruling stands to dramatically upend the political landscape in Santa Clara, where Gillmor leads a four-member majority bloc on the all-white council.

Virtually every other California city involved in similar voting rights cases wound up settling, which prevented them from appealing. Not Santa Clara, which means the city still has the option of challenging Kuhnle’s ruling. But Konda said he’s optimistic.

“This really is a victory for the community and the democracy,” he said. “Both the Asian American and Latino community will get to elect the candidate of their choice.”

San Jose HighRise Contractor Pays $250K Over Labor Violations The developer of a downtown San Jose apartment tower shelled out $250,000 to settle labor violations alleged by federal investigators. Full Power Properties LLC—the builder that took over for KT Urban and is erecting the 650-unit Silvery Towers— owed the money to 22 workers, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced last week.

Investigators found that Full Power Properties profited off underpaid workers employed by Job Torres, an unlicensed subcontractor doing business as Nobilis Construction. During off hours, those workers lived in captivity, in a squalid warehouse run by Torres.

Acting on a tip that Haywardbased Nobilis Construction used undocumented workers as slaves, agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security served search warrants at multiple sites in August 2017, took the construction boss into federal custody and referred the case to the DOL’s Wage and Hour Division.

Investigators say they found that Torres kept workers in a cramped loft hidden behind a wall, with wood bunks and no running water.

Torres allegedly locked the door from the outside.

There were signs of trouble long before federal investigators began looking into claims of forced labor in February 2017, says Ruth Silver-Taube, legal services chair of the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking.

Silvery Towers developer KT Urban, which enjoyed tax breaks from the city to incentivize the project, came under fire in 2016 for hiring non-union workers, prompting a series of protests by local labor unions.

“Some [protesters] even went to the city of San Jose and complained, ‘Why are you allowing these kinds of projects?’” she recalls. “And you know what? They were right.”

Off the Road How a house in downtown San Jose inspired the Beat Generation

A

NEW BOOK of lost imagery from the Beat Generation has emerged, triggering this columnist to reflect on those celebrated literary troublemakers, some of whom spent some serious time here locally. The Beat Scene: Photographs by Burt Glinn is a landmark collection, much of which is in color. A successful photographer on numerous fronts, Glinn took the shots between 1957 and 1960 in San Francisco and New York. All the usual suspects are included.

Now, since Neal Cassady’s old house still exists at 1047 E. Santa Clara St.—the sizable den of iniquity he shared with his wife Carolyn and their three kids in the early ’50s—I feel obligated to foreground the history for Metro readers who may not have flipped through Allen Ginsberg’s journals, Jack Kerouac’s letters or Carolyn’s book, Off the Road.

That house was legendary. If only the walls could talk.

Neal was the uncontainable genius and prime culture jammer behind much of the Beat Generation. Among many other sordid escapades, he was

immortalized as Dean Moriarty in Kerouac’s novel, On the Road, and also drove the bus for Ken Kesey’s Merry Band of Pranksters. To this day, his legend lives on, with much exaggeration, all over the world.

In August of 1952, Neal and Carolyn arrived in San Jose, “a city then aptly nicknamed ‘Nowheresville,’” she wrote. Neal was holding down a job at Southern Pacific Railroad while planting marijuana seeds in the flowerbeds.

This was back when phone numbers were identified by two letters and five digits. Theirs was CY 7-0295.

Kerouac stayed with the Cassadys several times during the few years they lived on Santa Clara Street, with Carolyn and Jack famously having a passionate affair. Flavors of this love triangle were immortalized in Kerouac’s novel, Big Sur, one of his best books. Decades later, Carolyn spilled the rest of the lurid yarn in Off the Road.

But not everything was hunkydory. As the story goes, Neal and Carolyn were deeply engaged

with the metaphysics of Edgar Cayce, which did not resonate with Kerouac, who was already looking eastward for inspiration.

As a result, it was in San Jose that Kerouac stole a copy of Dwight Goddard’s A Buddhist Bible from the San Jose Public Library, a book that became one of his first major conduits to Buddhism, leading to his embrace of the Dharma for years to come. Don’t ever discount the importance of libraries.

When Ginsberg finally showed up in San Jose to stay with the Cassadys for several weeks in 1954, even more drama unfolded. The Cassadys took him to goofy hypnotist parties in Sunnyvale, and Ginsberg even wrote of meeting “spinster old lady Rosicrucians.” What’s more, Ginsberg was madly in love with Neal. They’d already consummated encounters going back years, and by the time Ginsberg made it to San Jose, he was scribbling masochistic fantasies. Lucky for us, Ginsberg was so bored with Nowheresville that he filled several pages in his journals.

The now-infamous interlude described in various books went down in August of 1954. As Carolyn wrote it, she walked in on Ginsberg and Neal, in Ginsberg’s room, engaged in the act, after which she then retreated back to the living room, horrified. A few days later, she dropped Ginsberg off in San Francisco along with some pocket change and sent him on his way.

Nevertheless, Ginsberg wrote some seminal poems while staying at the Cassady house. He wrote, “Love Poem on Theme by Whitman,” in which he fantasized about a threesome with Neal and Carolyn. “In Back of the Real,” found him wandering desolate in the old San Jose railroad yard, only to equate a discarded flower with the universal struggle for beauty and hope against the wreckage of the landscape. “In Back of the Real” inspired at least a few dozen of my columns over the years.

At minimum, a plaque should be installed at 1047 E. Santa Clara St. I doubt the current owner would mind. Certainly the property value would increase. Certainly fans from around the world would visit. Will the Nowheresville City Council ever understand these things? Like Ginsberg’s discarded flower, we can only hope.

As local governments across the country chase universal connectivity, the capital of Silicon Valley considers how to digitize a city already grappling with user error

WO YEARS AGO, the city of San Jose set out to address an ironic problem.

The self-proclaimed capital of Silicon Valley was riddled with internet dead zones and home to a widening digital divide for the 28 percent of residents who lacked broadband access at home. That’s despite much-discussed efforts to roll out “Wickedly Fast” public WiFi and woo Google into installing a highspeed fiber network.

It was in this climate, with the city still reeling from shedding more than a fifth of its employees during the recession, that Shireen Santosham took a chance and said yes to Mayor

Sam Liccardo’s offer to become San Jose’s first-ever chief innovation officer.

“San Jose as a city had gone through almost a decade of fiscal tightening,” says Santosham, a Harvard-educated former consultant at McKinsey. “Tech in that space had suffered quite a bit.”

But that was then.

In mid-June, the city announced the biggest step yet in a wide-ranging “Smart City Vision” unveiled in 2016, which aims to both digitize city services and encourage private companies to launch “demonstrations” for technologies like self-driving cars. But such projects require fast Internet connections,

which is why the city last month approved a series of new broadband deals with Verizon, AT&T and Sprint vendor Mobilitie to install a so-called “small cell” network funded by an expected $500 million in investment from the companies.

The new small cell network, key to 5G cell phone service that could expedite phone connection speeds between 10 and 100 times current speeds, is the biggest broadband deal of its kind attempted in North America, city officials say.

“We’re right now talking to a number of markets. San Jose kind of leaned in early and said, ‘We want to be a part of this,’” says Jason Porter, AT&T’s Dallas-based vice president of global technology planning. “They wanted to differentiate their city as being a digital-first city.”

Far from a wonky pet project, San Jose Assistant City Manager

Kip Harkness says the upgraded infrastructure is a prerequisite for modernizing city functions like permitting, access to public meetings and communication for first responders—especially as residents get more used to on-demand tech services in everyday life.

“How do you go from the Sears version of government to the Amazon Prime model of government?” asks Harkness, who also oversees a new permanent Office of Innovation spearheaded by Liccardo.

In that pursuit, San Jose, like other major metro areas from New York to Los Angeles, must contend with creating new tech-centric regulations from scratch, including fast-moving issues like consumer privacy, data security and corporate surveillance.

Without safeguards, critics warn that cities may be walking headfirst into

A New IQ What makes a city “smart” depends on who you ask.

On one hand are public investments in infrastructure and tech systems that promise relatively straight-forward improvements in the way a city operates or interacts with residents. The city of San Jose, for instance, is among those investing in new energy-saving LED smart lights, sensor-equipped irrigation for public parks, tracking devices that monitor wear and tear on city vehicles and a longer-term digital overhaul of the city permitting process.

The goal is making the city more “user friendly,” Santosham says,

“so that it doesn’t feel like you’re stepping back in time when you step in city hall.”

Though such efforts can be expensive, they’re not as nebulous as the vast realm of public-private partnerships, where cities enter into one-off agreements with individual tech providers to pilot or deploy emerging technologies. Global infrastructure firm Arup estimates that “smart urban services” will be a $400 billion-a-year industry by 2020.

Amsterdam, for example, is using parked electric cars plugged into chargers as giant batteries to help power homes. Just over Highway 17, Santa Cruz has become a surprising hotbed for debate about the future of so-called “predictive policing,” which advocates say uses big data to isolate locations likely to become the scene of a crime, but which skeptics say is just new packaging for over-policing in poor or minority neighborhoods.

In San Jose, Santosham says more than 30 companies have approached the city about testing self-driving cars, though only two or three unnamed companies are likely to move ahead this year. Several other high-profile projects remain in limbo, according to a June committee meeting update, including Facebook’s proposed Terragraph WiFi system.

“The demand was overwhelming,” Santosham says of the period after the city’s smart city plan was released in 2016. “We had an incredible amount of interest from companies across the Valley.”

To critics like Adam Greenfield, however, such wide-ranging tech pilot projects on public property are merely a thinly veiled attempt at expanding corporate influence on daily life. The author of the 2013 book Against the Smart City is among those skeptical of the benefits of offering infrastructure providers and developers unprecedented access to consumer data.

Though large tech firms have been quick to offer up hardware, apps and software platforms, the space increasingly attracts criticism for vaguely defined buzzwords, including Silicon Valley standbys like “big data” and “artificial intelligence.”

Big Brother-like scenarios dominated by monopolistic tech providers.

Some of those concerns have even been voiced from within the city. Santosham and Liccardo attracted nationwide attention in January, when the pair quit a highprofile federal broadband taskforce that skeptics said was overrun by industry players seeking lax rules and favorable financial arrangements for corporations and less control for local governments.

“When you’re talking about complex issues of technology and regulation, it’s often lost on the public just how badly they’re being screwed,” Liccardo told Bloomberg in April.

With a proposal for San Jose’s first citywide data policy due in the fall, the other elephant in the room is whether all the time and money put into smart city technologies—some honed right here in Silicon Valley— can really make a dent in the region’s most daunting quality-of-life issues, like unaffordable housing and permagridlocked traffic.

“What cities are looking at is how do we bring more services without spending a lot more money,” says Harry Plant, vice president of social impact at San Jose-based Internet of Things technology company Aeris, one of several industry players represented on the city’s smart city advisory council. “The market is so new that you don’t know whether it’s going to generate 50 percent return or 200 percent return or 500 percent return.”

the colonisation of everyday life by information processing,” Greenfield wrote in a recent column for The Guardian.

In cities like San Jose, where fraught development politics are often front and center, smart cities can also become yet another front in never-ending battles over how to retrofit Bay Area cities for ballooning populations. “‘Smart’ is a snazzy political label used by a modern alliance of leftist urbanites and tech industrialists,” sci-fi author and professor Bruce Sterling wrote in The Atlantic earlier this year.

“To deem yourself ‘smart’ is to make the NIMBYites and market-force people look stupid.”

Beyond the conflict, though, remains the question of if and how smart city technologies can actually be brought to bear on issues that most impact local residents.

In some ways, San Jose’s current status as an upcoming Google expansion city lining up a steady stream of new tech pilot projects seems almost inevitable. Since the semiconductor industry first boomed in the 1980s, the city has positioned itself as the urban capital of Silicon Valley.

Still, San Jose has also struggled with keeping costs down to serve residents across its sprawling geography, not to mention competition with San Francisco for luring affluent tech workers. Though city officials have said Google will not get tax breaks or other financial incentives for a reported 40-acre campus near Diridon Station, San Jose in 2013 offered up $7 million in incentives to Samsung.

As the region’s tech companies continues to expand, the question for the city is how to choose which types of new tech connectivity to prioritize.

“The foundational work is, ‘What do we need to do to build a platform?’” says Plant, Aeris’ social impact coordinator. “So they’re not just spending money that’s going down a rathole.”

Already, popular privately managed event venues including Avaya Stadium and nearby Levi’s

Stadium have been competing to build out smaller-scale networks that promise to provide high-speed Internet, mobile payments and longer-term capabilities like face recognition or virtual reality.

For the city, the focus remains trying to unlock more beneficial aspects of technology without walking headfirst into Big Brotheresque scenarios. Key to Santosham’s efforts with the new 5G network, Santosham said, was getting multiple telecom providers to work together, rather than allowing one mega-owner, while also laying the groundwork for a new $24 million digital inclusion fund.

“We don’t really want only private companies driving the space,” she says of the balance the city increasingly tries to strike with new tech initiatives.

Still, knowing what you don’t want is only half the battle.

The real key for San Jose—and aspiring smart cities everywhere— will be developing longer-term policies able to adapt to both ofthe-moment tech fads like electric scooters and serious concerns like data security for residents.

HOUGH ONLY JUST popularized as a postworkout snack in the Bay, acai berries have been a staple in much of South America for centuries.

The Amazonian superfood— pronounced ah-sai-ee—is known for its deep purplish hue, distinctively rich and complex taste, and laundry list of health benefits.

A favorite of Brazilian surfers and beach bums since the ’80s,

acai is now making itself known at Vitality Bowls in downtown Mountain View. This Bay Areabased chain offers a variety of sandwiches, salads and of course, acai fruit in the form of bowls, smoothies and juices.

Mountain View’s location is especially unique in that it was opened in May by 18-year-old Westmont High School graduate Angel Camacho, who is arguably one of the youngest acai entrepreneurs in the biz. The Mountain View outpost is the 50th opening for the everexpanding chain, which was founded

in 2011 by Camacho’s aunt and San Ramon resident, Tara Gilad.

On a Sunday morning when I visited, the small cafe and adjacent patio space were packed with Lululemon-clad customers and a few families getting their fill of the antioxidant-packed breakfast food.

Although I wouldn’t call myself a health nut, I do frequent the Whole Foods juice bar a few times a week. So I was surprised to learn about a number of “superfruits” Vitality Bowls serves that I had never heard of before, including acerola, graviola, camu camu berries, pitaya and aronia to name a few. High in vitamin C, potassium, B-vitamins and antioxidants, these superfruits are combined into a proprietary “VB blend” that acts as a base alongside acai in almost half of Vitality Bowls’ dozen-plus menu items.

I opted to try the tropical bowl ($12.49), one of the most popular menu items, which was composed of acai, coconut milk, apple juice, bananas, mango, flax

seed and pineapple as its base and was topped with organic granola, bananas, strawberries, coconut shavings and a drizzling of honey. The bowl came out neatly decorated and stacked high with fruit, making it somewhat difficult to dig my spoon into. But it was worth it once I did: the flavors and textures from the toppings and base paired together perfectly—the ideal combination of sweet, tangy and crunchy. The tropical bowl’s base was fairly sweet, due in part to the added apple juice and honey, and tasted dessert-like without feeling heavy.

I also sampled Vitality’s superfood bowl ($14.49) which included acai and the VB blend of superfruits as well as graviola, acerola, kale, bananas, strawberries and almond milk as its base. It was topped with tangy blueberries, cacao nibs, granola, bananas, and was sprinkled with a generous heap of goji berries, which are known for their high protein and fiber content. The combination of the crunchy cacao nibs and granola went together nicely with the chewy goji berries and complimented a base that felt filling and healthy without compromising on taste.

While all of the Vitality’s acai bowls come with a multitude of topping combinations, customers can also customize smoothies, juices, and bowls with extra mix-ins or toppings for only an additional 75 cents. Try adding noni fruit, a tropical fruit native to Polynesia that touts immune-boosting and tumor-fighting properties, or ginkgo leaf powder, which is said to improve brain health.

It should be noted that all of Vitality Bowls’ menu items are made fresh to order, so be prepared to wait a few minutes—especially if there is a queue of online or to-go orders. That being said, the acai bowls at Vitality are worth the wait and then some. Made with organic ingredients, zero ice, added sugars, fillers or dairy products, they’re healthy enough that you won’t feel guilty going back for seconds.

Though he may not be recognized by a large national audience, Keak Da Sneak is a legend among Bay Area hip-hop heads and is an influential force within rap music, broadly speaking. A pioneer of the hyphy sound, Keak’s trademark gravelly vocals and stuttering delivery are instantly identifiable, while his infectious turns of phrase—most notably “fo sheezy”—have been picked up by larger names across the genre.

The emcee has had a turbulent couple years. He was nearly killed in a 2016 shooting, and his 2017 album Withdrawal speaks to his struggles with substance abuse.

Led by Bay Area wind ensemble Quinteto Latino, the first-ever Seminario Institute will be held at the Community School of Music and Arts this weekend. Beginning with three days of workshops for pre-professional classical musicians of color from around the country, the event concludes with a concert at the CSMA’s Tateuchi Hall.

The aim of the project is to expose the public to a diversity of players and sounds while also giving the next generation of classical players of color a boost in a sector that is commonly seen as predominantly Euro-American. (WR)

Pinball Wizards Professional pinheads come to Santa Clara to compete at classic arcade show

A

S THE WORLD rushes headlong into its digital future, the bulky metal contraptions we call pinball machines might seem like a curious anachronism. But in 2018, those contraptions have a lot going for them.

“It's what I call ‘RR:’ real reality,” says Josh Sharpe. “Pinball uses gravity and real physics, and that's simply not an experience that can be reproduced in a digital fashion.”

Sharpe is the associate director of the International Flip Pinball Association. His organization is

putting on a pinball tournament weekend as part of the California Extreme classic arcade show at the Hilton in Santa Clara. There, fans have a chance to take part in the game’s 21st century history, vying for a score high enough to land an invitation to the final round in Chicago—where the world’s undisputed pinball champion will be determined.

Profoundly analog and localized, pinball is the veritable opposite of a download. Not only a tangible object bound by real-world physics, pinball machines themselves are intricate feats of engineering, made up of thousands of tiny parts. Different

titles feature unique elements and modes of play, meaning that each game is its own experience.

“I think the most special thing about pinball is that it serves a variety of angles,” Sharpe says. “There are people that embrace the art of pinball. There are people that focus on customizing and modding their pinball machines, similar to hot rods with cars. There are people that focus on the inner workings of the game, fixing them up, and so on.”

And like any game worth its salt, pinball has also birthed a dedicated competitive culture. While this is the first year for the Pro Circuit, IFPA held a championship last year where 24-yearold Raymond Davidson was crowned the game’s No. 1 player, a title he will be defending in Circuit’s final round.

Sharpe is a top-20 rated player himself, though he trails behind his brother Zach, who holds the No. 2 spot under Davidson. For both of them, pinball is a family affair. It was, after all, their father Roger Sharpe, who in 1976 made a history-altering shot in a New York courtroom.

On trial that morning was the very

fate of the game itself. Long outlawed in New York, where it was considered a form on gambling, Roger Sharpe was determined to prove that pinball was, in fact, a game of skill.

There were two games in the courtroom that morning, both of which were built by Gottlieb, one of pinball’s major developers. On one side of the room was a billiardsthemed machine called Bank Shot.

On the other, El Dorado, styled after Spaghetti Westerns. Roger approached El Dorado. Before he could play, the council interrupted.

Fearing that the player’s preferred machine might have been rigged, they sent him across the room to the other game. Pinball’s future would depend on Bank Shot.

After explaining the basic maneuvers to the councilmen, Sharpe (considered one of the best players in the world) made a bold move: He called his next shot. On the next turn, he announced, he would shoot the ball down the center passage.

The council watched incredulously as he pulled the plunger. When the ball came down the chute he paused, waiting to time his shot just right, then he hit the flipper. The ball shot down the center. The council immediately voted 6-0 to overturn the ban on pinball.

These days, Roger doesn’t play as often as he used to, having long ago passed the torch to his sons Zach and Josh. And now, with players like Davidson, and the emergence of the Pro Circuit, that torch will soon be passing again, this time to a generation of players who never saw the game during its 20st century heyday.

“For years Zach and myself were the youngest players competing out there,” Josh says. “It's reassuring to know that there's a whole new generation of excellent players behind us that will carry the torch forward for years to come.”

Cultural Connections GROWING UP BICULTURAL in the eclectic narrative of Bay Area culture, local artist and art teacher Asami Akinaga explores her Japanese heritage in her first solo exhibit “Strength: Drawings & Paintings.”

Born in Japan’s vibrant capital, Akinaga moved from Tokyo to the Bay Area at age 2. But as she spent most of her summers back in her home country, the move did nothing to dampen her ties to her native land.

“I consider myself growing up with both cultures,” says Akinaga who refuses to tie her identity to a single building block. “They hear me speak and they assume I’m American now, and I think that’s strange because I’m just as fluent in Japanese.”

When the opportunity arose for her first solo show, she immediately knew what her story would be. The exhibit features a series of charcoaland-graphite works, all displaying different elements of daily Japanese life—including flowers and kimonos.

Strength: Drawings There are also textile works. A blue kimono & Paintings hung on the wall is embroidered with intriguing black outlines that form a pile of hands, reaching Thru Jul 13, Free up from the base of the garment to its collar. The Mohr Gallery, CSMA, piece was hand-sewn, hand-embroidered and handMountain View dyed by Akinaga and is called Woven Strength. It was arts4all.org the product of sleepless nights and came together with help from her mother and sister.

Growing up in a creative household that always had art supplies laying around, Akinaga cites her family as the reason for her artistic streak.

“This show commemorates them,” Akinaga says.

In the portrait Contemplation, the detailed lines of her mother’s face are enveloped by warm orange hues, which hint at a state of deep, reflective thought.

In “Strength,” Akinaga also works to break down some of the stereotypes she’s spent her entire life listening to—ones centered around a feminine identity and culture that hit close to home.

She Lets Her Hair Down depicts her sister who has let her wavy locks fall over her shoulder. “I wanted to show the representation that Japanese women have more than just sleek straight black hair,” Akinaga says. “She has naturally wavy hair, which is still rare, but it does exist.”

As for the stereotype that all Japanese women are submissive and quiet, Akinaga chuckles, looking back at her own family and says, “From my experience, we were so not like that!” —Winona Rajamohan

BOMB VOYAGE ‘Mission: Impossible—Fallout’ is a knockout, excelling in its mix of trickery and brute force.

HE IMF’S QUARRY is a mysterious anarchist calling himself “John Lark,” a nuclear terrorist who has wrought a long, tedious manifesto about the importance of purging the Earth through suffering. By contrast Mission: Impossible—Fallout gives one nothing to suffer over except for the winching of nerves during one of its expert fight sequences, it’s rousing soundtrack by Lorne Balfe and it’s soaring mountain and cityscapes.

This time Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must retrieve three plutonium spheres from what’s left of the Syndicate of Solomon Lane (the Eli Wallach-like Sean Harris). Hunt is forcibly saddled with Walker (Henry Cavill) a hard-on from the CIA. Betrayal is in the wings as both Langley and MI-6 interfere with the game.

Hunt is on more rooftops than Spider-Man, crawling around the dome of St. Paul’s, the tower of the former Bankside Power Station, and the glass-roofed Grand Palais in Paris. Nothing takes the ennui out of what critic Edmund Wilson called “Europe strutting its same old stuff” like unleashing the spies on these monuments.

Mission: Impossible— The motorcycle and car chases are at a new level of Fallout brilliantly orchestrated chaos—a motorcycle donuting around a five sided Parisian square and seeing hoards PG-13; 147 Mins. of cops barricading every street emptying into it; the sky Valleywide shell-pink and ravishing as every cop in France chases the IMF. And the stunts! Consider 15 seconds of this: a biker T-boning the side of a large truck and somersaulting to the pavement. Watch and remember the renowned stuntman, Dar Robinson, who died doing such a seemingly simple flip.

Hunt’s IMF contains, as always, Ving Rhames dripping with humanity, and expert comedy relief from Simon Pegg, getting the jitters before yet another dangerous impostiture. The finale, a helicopter chase through the Himalayas with every warning button flashing, ends with a cliffhanger worthy of the term.

You could say that Mission: Impossible—Fallout has everything you’d want from a spy movie, but it wouldn’t be correct. What’s missing, probably in the name of realism, is the elegance of the Bonds—the luxury side, the pauses for dinner. Vanessa Kirby, a stunner, turns up as some sort of wealthy but unsavory financier with a knife in her garter belt. And then she’s gone. Shuttled off to the side, she has to give Hunt a weird quick goodbye kiss instead of the proper wining, dining and quip-trading she could have expected from 007. —Richard von Busack

Wheeled Victory Joaquin Phoenix is memorable in new Gus Van Sant biopic on cartoonist

T

HE MARK OF a good movie about Alcoholics Anonymous is that it doesn’t make you want to run for the nearest bar as soon as it’s over. Happily, such is the case with Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, concerning the late, disabled Portland cartoonist John Callahan.

Gus Van Sant’s long-delayed biopic was in the works for a more than a decade. Robin Williams was slated

to be in one version of it. Van Sant, bouncing back from some recent, flawed films, has a less winsome and more subtle star than Williams in the form of Joaquin Phoenix.

Phoenix plays this beatific slacker with thumbprint-smeared glasses and a shock of hair dyed the color of the Golden Gate Bridge. He’s consistently surprising—quiet and ruminative as well as devilish—as the hardcore drinker, nearly killed in a traffic accident and left in a wheelchair as a result. In recovery, Callahan develops skills as a gag cartoonist with a great deal of low-down humor and shock value.

It commences in a sturdy old scene, the man at the pinnacle of his career being honored at the podium in front of a slide-show of his work. It flashes back some 20 years to Callahan’s last day on two feet: starting with a cigarette in the shower, and heading out for a medicinal half-pint of tequila to the beach. There, John tries to interest a female surfer in an early morning drink. (“If the sky gets any bluer, it’ll start singing Muddy Waters tunes,” he tells her. Nice try, but she doesn’t get it.)

Day drinking gives way to more serious guzzling, as John and his dubious new acquaintance, Dexter (Jack Black), roam a cycle of parties in Long Beach, before the car crash. Van Sant leads us, through split screen, to John adjusting to paralysis—trying to be a drinker and a paraplegic at the same time. After he hits bottom, the cartoonist-to-be wrestles with the 12 steps in an eclectic support group at an over-decorated mansion.

impressive, drily funny Jonah Hill).

Among the other members are Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon as “Corky” and Udo Kier who, disappointingly, gets interrupted in what sounds like a supernatural drunkalogue about the roots of his addiction back in the Black Forest at his grandmother’s house.

Hail noble Kier, proving once again that after an actor plays Dracula he never really comes back.

All this is attractive quirkiness, more believable than John’s part time romance with a Swedish nurse turned stewardess, played by a short-haired Rooney Mara using her Girl With the Dragon Tattoo accent. She’s such a dream girl that you suspect she’s going to turn out to be an imaginary muse.

Mostly the film succeeds on tone and sheer likability. It’s good and raucous, as in Callahan’s experiments with post-accident sex (including clips from a vintage ’70s therapeutic movie about how to do it in a wheelchair).

It’s all less serious than The Sessions.

Van Sant captures the sense of Callahan’s success, and the point-black black humor of his work.

The cartoons—bulbous, grotesque and enraging, carried out with Callahan’s limited mobility— turn out to been quite studied, done over and over again for maximum punch.

And there’s a bit of slapstick in the way Callahan races his wheelchair in front of speeding cars, and up a skateboard ramp. Here is not so much a sense of confinement as exhilaration, as in a wheeled dance around some stone city park sculptures with a female friend.

Van Sant’s facility with street life is so gifted that you don’t mind the AA cliches that emerge. (“Maybe you were weakened so that you could become strong,” Callahan is informed).

The director evinces nostalgia for Portland before it became Portlandia, the old city where he began his filmmaking career 30 years ago with Mala Noche. A story of recovery such as this usually isn’t as balanced between the scary fun of carousing and the time spent in contemplation and making amends. The movie offers a sense of place as well as a sense of play.

RIOR TO SIGNING with Atlantic Records, booking concerts nationwide and gaining millions of followers on social media, Bay Area native Claudia Alexandra Feliciano spent the first 10 years of her life in San Jose.

Better known as Snow Tha Product, the hip-hop queen who raps circles around a mostly male-dominated scene has worked alongside some of the biggest names in music and come a long way since early mixtapes like 2010’s Run Up or Shut Up. With rapid-fire rhymes that keep pace with the likes of Busta Rhymes

or Eminem, and a bilingual flow, Snow has not only built a music career but a cult following.

“I’ve had to jump through hoops,” Snow says over the phone from her home in Los Angeles, where her Pomeranian can be heard trying to escape halfway through our call.

“Proving myself as a Mexican woman rapping, I don’t think that’s a very easy task because there’s not very many of us.”

Snow’s musical catalog demonstrates she’s not afraid to write about the disadvantages and stereotypes she’s encountered during her career, including being called “too pretty to rap fast.” Her style of music is blunt and often discusses serious

issues such as immigration, social stigmas and anxiety.

These days, Snow’s collaborators include artists like Ty Dolla $ign, Tech N9ne and Hamilton playwright LinManuel Miranda, but her first collabs date back to her early childhood. She first publicly expressed her passion for music by singing alongside numerous mariachi bands and with her grandfather, who played violin and guitar.

“Everybody just kind of knew me as the little girl who sang with the mariachi,” she says. “Eventually, in high school, I started liking rap.”

Snow then spent years “slowly but surely grinding away” to prove she didn’t fall under just one musical genre. “I didn’t want to be pigeonholed into a Latin rap category,” she says. For her, this meant striving to break away from what others expected of her. “It’s been a lot of work, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

While newer tracks like “Myself ” are full of immediate positive messages about self love and working hard to get ahead, sometimes it takes a second listen to hear the deeper context. Party

anthems like “Help A Bitch Out,” where she speaks about independence and female empowerment, offer more than just the song’s catchy chorus— with lines like “I don’t need no help, I don’t need a man.”

“People don’t take into consideration how much I actually said on it,” she says of the track. “Once you really dig into my verse, you kind of hear a lot of issues being tackled.”

Her bold method of writing often makes her seem fearless, but there is still an undeniable sensitive quality about her. “I’m more scared of being vulnerable than talking crap,” she says before she explains there are a number of songs she’s found too personal to release. “I wouldn’t want to be so vulnerable and not have it come out the right way.”

Not that she isn’t working to put those songs out. In fact, she hopes to spend time recording and release new material after her current tour, which includes her first show in San Jose, the city where she was born.

While the area is pegged to many fond childhood memories and holiday visits, Snow says she’s still disappointed by San Jose’s dearth of all-ages venues. Though she’s excited to play The Ritz this July, she wishes the venue wasn’t 21-and-over because she doesn’t want to exclude any of her fans, whom she credits with her success thus far.

“I’ve never really had too much radio promo or press,” she says. “It’s always basically just been me going out there, touching the fans and talking to them—that’s kind of how my career got built.”

For Snow, there is no feeling comparable to the thrill she feels on stage, and she is excited to perform where a large portion of her family lives—plus she loves the food and is looking forward to eating some good tacos.

“I feel like if it hadn’t gotten so expensive, I would have always lived in San Jose,” she says. “I love visiting my family, and it’s always a party whenever they’re there. Hopefully, San Jose shows up.”

TAJ MAHAL IS a timeless artist who’s always been ahead of his time. The singer, songwriter and guitarist was making Americana and world music long before either musical genre had been coined. He’s earned many accolades— three Grammys and more nominations, the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, an honorary doctorate—and released over 30 albums under his own name.

His most recent project finds him working within the blues idiom and collaborating with a fellow singer, songwriter and guitarist. Released in May 2017, Mahal’s collaboration with Keb’ Mo’—aptly titled TajMo—earned this year’s Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Yet Taj Mahal hasn’t become a household name. “I’ve been a performing artist all these years,” he says, “while the popular side of the music business has been record sellers. So they haven’t been out touring. I have been out touring, and I’ve always had my finger on the pulse of people in the live situation.”

Taj Mahal’s body of work doesn’t fit neatly into most people’s idea of a popular artist. In one sense, his style is difficult to pin down. His albums have explored the traditional and pop music of the Caribbean Islands, his ancestral Africa and the south Pacific. With guitarist Ry Cooder he was in the Rising Sons, one of the first multiracial rock bands signed to a record deal.

He doesn’t view his body of work as especially confusing. “I can take a guitar and go anywhere to the ends of the earth,” he says.

“I can be in the steppes of Mongolia, and if I play what I play, somebody’s gonna say, ‘Oh, you play Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’ blues,’ because of the sound of the music. Most all of popular music is fueled by the movement of Africans into the Western world. I grew up with the bands of Basie and Lunceford and Ellington and Eckstine and Armstrong—all those guys.
