EARLY RESULTS SHED LIGHT ON MAKEUP OF NEXT LOS GATOS TOWN COUNCIL Pellerin is expected to slide to an easy victory in her Assembly race Drew Penner, Editor
Voting results released Friday night, a little after 8pm, showed an early lead for Rob Moore (24.1% of the vote) with Jeffrey Suzuki in second place (at 18.97%) and Rob Stump in third (at 17.71%), with Mary Badame trailing (at 16.77%), followed by Steve Raspe (at 13.21%) and Heidi Owens at (9.24%). Just before the polls closed in Santa Clara County, more than a third of ballots had been returned (397,435—of which 2,461 were “challenged,” and 22,766 were “undeliverable.”) More than half (54%) of these were by Democrats, 22.8% were from “no party preference” voters, and 19.1% were from Republicans, followed by American Independent (2.8%), Libertarian (.6%), other (.4%) and Green (.3%). Given that Moore and Suzuki are more progressive candidates, that leaves open the possibility that others could easily make up ground throughout the evening. Residents are deciding who will be seated the three available Council jobs over the next four years. The candidates are Jeff Suzuki, an anti-racism activist as well as a Transportation and Complete Streets commissioner, planning commissioners Steve Raspe and Rob Stump, Santa Clara Coun➝ Election, 4

LOCAL SECURES $100K FOR RAT TRAP BIZ ON SHARK TANK Ian Fleming held watch party for ABC reality show appearance at fitness center Drew Penner, Editor
Just before his episode of “Shark Tank” began, Los Gatos resident Ian Fleming told the 40-50 supporters who’d gathered Oct. 28 on the Club at Los Gatos’ patio, next to the glow of the aquatic area, to please give him some grace.
“You’re not allowed to judge. When you’re up there it ’s tough,” he said, to a murmur of laughter, mentioning his wife has seen him do that exact thing as the popular ABC reality show plays. “I’m that guy that sits on the couch, and I look at ‘Shark Tank’ and I’m like, ‘Babe, look at this guy. He’s not even doing the valuation negotiation right. What an idiot!’” Fleming walked onto set seeking $100,000 for a 5%
stake in his trap business, which was developed while their family was living in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They’ve since moved to Los Gatos. He told the crowd the scariest moment came at the beginning of filming, when you’re waiting for the doors to open and you can feel your heart pounding. “The producers knew everything about me at that point, ➝ Shark Tank, 6

WHAT’S UP WITH ‘THE MINT’? Beta Bionics’ patch pump is changing the way people approach taking insulin Ir a Dasnurk ar, Contributor
Irvine-based insulin delivery technology company Beta Bionics recently obtained FDA clearance for its new Mint insulin patch pump, opening the door for an official commercial launch in early 2027. The pump aims to simplify daily blood glucose management for people living with Type 1 diabetes worldwide, though it does introduce drawbacks for users. To understand the product, it’s important to understand Type 1 diabetes—the reason why such a device is needed in the first place. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic health conditions worldwide, affecting adults and children alike. It is an autoimmune condition that occurs when the body destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas that help control blood sugar levels; however, it can be effectively managed through daily insulin therapy. Common forms include manual insulin injections, tubed insulin pumps that are attached to the body, or, as of recently, tubeless insulin patch pumps. Since the creation of tubeless patch pumps in 2003, continuous innovations have made them more automated and convenient for people living with Type 1 diabetes around the world. Much like its other patch pump competitors, the Mint pump is placed directly against the skin. It is composed of two parts—a reusable controller and a disposable insulin reservoir—and is cleared for individuals ages 6 and older who require insulin therapy. It introduces various benefits both for users and the environment: • Extended Wear Time: The disposable reservoir holds up to 200 units of insulin and is cleared for three days of continuous wear, with an additional 12 hour grace period for device changes. • No Recharging Required: The reus-
able controller operates without requiring multiple recharges, reducing daily maintenance and increasing convenience for users. • Reduced Electronic Waste: By utilizing a reusable controller alongside a disposable reservoir, the design minimizes plastic and electronic waste compared to fully disposable patch pumps. Modern diabetes management also relies heavily on digital integration, and the Mint pump is no exception. Rather than using buttons on the device, the pump is controlled entirely through an app that is compatible with both iOS and Android, and is also designed to communicate directly with continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) to create an integrated blood glucose management system. However, there are some drawbacks to the Mint system. Because of its two part design, users have to manage swapping out the disposable reservoir as well as keeping track of the lifespan of the reusable piece. This is completely different from commonly worn competitors like Insulet’s Omnipod 5, which are thrown away entirely once the three day wear period has finished. If the reusable piece is accidentally trashed by users used to fully disposable pumps, their insulin therapy must halt until they get a replacement. Additionally, unlike the Omnipod 5 or Tandem’s Mobi, the Mint relies on an autonomous algorithm. This creates a disadvantage for users who prefer to manually micromanage their insulin doses. Though the basic Mint hardware has secured FDA clearance, Beta Bionics aims to eventually upgrade the device into a fully automated insulin delivery system known as the Mint 3D. The company has submitted a separate FDA approval application for its 3D Intelligence dosing algorithm. If cleared, this algorithm will allow healthcare providers/clinicians to select from three distinct automated delivery configurations to actively adjust insulin delivery based on live patient CGM trends.

VOTING LOCATION An Uncle Sam skeleton greets voters on the third floor of the Santa Cruz County government building, which was evacuated days earlier due to a hazardous materials scare.
VOTES ARE TABULATED
Election, from page 1
ty employee Heidi Owens, current Mayor Rob Moore, and former mayor and current Council member Mary Badame. There’s been plenty of twists and turns in this campaign, from public forums hosted by local broadcasters KCAT and Pirate Cat Radio, to an event at the Los Gatos Theatre put on by the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce, to a face-off at The Terraces of Los Gatos senior living community. Measure N, the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District School Bond (55% vote required to pass) was hanging in the balance with 54.41% in favor, with 10,842 votes counted. On Friday, District 28 Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, who’s facing off against Republican Carol Pefley (Pellerin got 72% of the vote in the primary), told “Dangerous” Dan Orange on the Bushwhacker's Breakfast Club program on 88.1FM in Santa Cruz that she’s had to miss a campaign event in Silicon Valley because she was stuck on the Santa Cruz County side of the hill—in a couple hours of traffic hell on Highway 17. She also walked the former speaker at the Los Gatos Lions Club through how difficult it was to get a child marriage ban across the finish line—by using a “gut and amend” tactic, then waiting patiently for Governor Gavin Newsom who seemed to be taking his sweet time to approve it. “It’s been an issue that this legislature has been working with for almost 10 years,” Pellerin said on the KZSC airwaves, noting Chelsea Clinton helped to push this issue to the forefront. “We
just really saw the window, like, slightly open here. And we’re like, ‘We’ve gotta run with this, this year. So, I had a bill, AB1267, languishing in committee. So, I was able to take the contents of that bill, and dilute it and put in new language that would be our historic child marriage ban bill—that set 18 as the minimum age to marry, no exceptions.” The original text was a substance use disorder bill, supported by Janus of Santa Cruz, but Pellerin said they’d discovered there was already a law on the books to address their concerns. Pellerin said she was touched that Newsom held a signing ceremony for the new law. “The governor invited survivors and advocates and authors,” she said, after which Dangerous Dan asked her about the uncertainty around whether Newsom was planning on signing the bill. “He likes drama…I had just driven back from Sacramento and got into my house, and got a phone call from the governor’s office that he was signing the bill the next day, and could I come up for a signing ceremony? I was exhausted.” Luckily, her district director, Mary Anne Groen, signed up for driving duties back to the capitol. On election night, there was a steady stream of vehicles passing by Pellerin’s former office—from when she was Santa Cruz County Clerk—as people inserted ballots into the drop box. And inside, an Uncle Sam skeleton sat behind another ballot box. One of the election officials said she wasn’t too scared when the building was evacuated, a few days earlier, when a mysterious white powder billowed out of an envelope that had arrived at Congressman Jimmy Panetta’s office on the same floor. The product turned out to not be hazardous, though the incident shut down the courts and County government affairs for an entire day. Panetta was expected to handily beat his Republican challenger, Peter Verbica (who got just 20.5% of the primary vote, to Panetta’s 58.4%).

IN THE DEEP END
Shark Tank, from page 1 so, they’re playing the ‘Africa’—Toto song,” said Fleming, who spent time on wildlife film shoots with his father growing up, noting he used the music to pump himself up. “What they don’t tell you is, you don’t, like, go straight into your speech. They make you stand there, like, for what feels like eternity while they get all these shots. Before I got on, I knew I wanted to get Lori, because she’s the queen of retail. And we want to be in retail.” So, he smiled directly at Lori Greiner, hoping to win her over with his charm, but he says he was thrown a bit when she didn’t respond exactly as he’d hoped. However, he had nothing to worry about. In fact, his presentation went about as smoothly as one could hope. He presented a simple but effective storyline about how the wisdom he learned on the other side of the globe from his dad (who he described as “a former crocodile hunter”) served as inspiration for the local company. “He told me about the delicate balance between hunter and hunted, and how to create simple systems that work—like catching hornbills,” told the sharks. “My father’s teachings held true in the city when I first came to the US, when I had—not a hornbill problem, but a rat problem.” Fleming removed the drape from his prop setup to reveal a bunch of fake rats gathered around a big bucket with a ramp—his trap. The sharks feigned fear, yelling “Ahhhh!” Robert Herjavec raised both hands, palms face-out. Alex Anderson, the co-owner of The Club at Los Gatos, said he was out of town when they got the request to use the space for a “Shark Tank” viewing. “This is what it’s all about,” he said. “This is why we have the backyard. As you can see, there’s a ton of support for him. I love that he’s doing it live.” It was the sort of product that allowed the investors to take turns digging into their personal well of infestation memories. Barbara Corcoran remarked on the large nature of the product. “We didn’t have one rat; we had hundreds of rats in our house,” she said. “My baby brothers used to catch them and my mother was always screaming. It was terrible to live with.” Daymond John grabbed one of the stuffed animal rats. “And Barbara, if you open it, you know what happens?” he said, as the toy rodent “attacked” the right side of his head. But no one was laughing when Fleming reported Vulcan’s lifetime sales as $1.6 million. He said their trap costs $89.99—leaving plenty of margin (about 15%) since
ENJOYING THE MOMENT Ian Fleming was nervous about how his turn on Shark Tank would look in the final edit.

Fleming added they’re projecting $5 million in sales this year. This was the perfect bait for the sharks—it led to three separate offers. John asked about the possibility of getting into big box stores. Corcoran tried to steer the deal towards social media marketing. Kevin O’Leary—just days after being imitated as a heartless data-center-pushing capitalist on Saturday Night Live—broke the ice with the first offer: $100,000 for 10% of the company, “however, this deal has to have a royalty.” He asked for a royalty of $10 a unit until he earns $400,000. “So, I’m basically 3Xing my dough,” he said. “While he’s squeezing your head,” Greiner commented. Corcoran offered $100,000 for a straight 10%. This is where John put on his metaphorical farmer’s hat. “I bought guinea hens to eat ticks. Then, they started having eggs. And then

the rats came around. And then I had to buy a rat snake. But that rat snake— but that was eating some of my eggs,” he said, adding he had install wire to fortify the coop. “I can’t get rid of the rats…Are there patents on this?” Fleming said one was set to be issued the very next day. John pointed out that he works with Carolina Coops (a foul-housing business that opted not to appear on Shark Tank to avoid giving up equity) and offered $100,000k for 15%. Fleming tried to get two or more of the sharks to team up, but found no takers. (Greiner said she doesn’t want to be thinking about rats constantly, with Herjavec exiting the pool for a similar reason.) He then asked John to come down to 7.5% and got an, “Absolutely not.” But Fleming was successful at getting John to come down to 12.5%. “In the moment, I just felt like Daymond’s a better guy (to go with) because he knows about rats, and he has all these companies that are adjacent to rat traps,” he told the Los Gatan. “Barbara didn’t
want to do the retail. She was like, You should go digital. So, strategy didn’t align. She had a better valuation…I almost had remorse afterwards. But I think it was the right choice.” Morgan Hill resident Raymond Lee, who knows Fleming through Sunday rugby games, said this could not have happened to anyone nicer. “Under fire, he handled himself with grace,” he said. “He didn’t look stressed out, didn’t look flustered.” Julie Golino, a San Jose resident whose husband used to coach Ian in rugby, “I love ‘Shark Tank’—I watch it as much as I can,” she said, noting it takes bravery to go on a program like that. “For Ian to do that, I was so proud of him.” His wife, Linnea, was also impressed with how things turned out. “I just thought about all the ways that I would have messed that up—and he kept his composure,” she said. “He’s got this amazing calmness and discipline that I don’t have. And that has carried him all the way through to national television. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Judge issues Emergency Protective Order allowing firearms seizure Drew Penner, Editor
Police took a 48-year-old Los Gatos man into custody after responding to a battery call along the 200 block of Edelen Avenue on Sunday evening. According to the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department’s transparency portal, officers headed to Old Town shopping center after receiving a call from a woman at 6:18pm who said she’d been choked by her partner and that he remained on the premises. Body camera footage shows the police were on scene by 6:26pm. “The investigation is still ongoing, so we won’t be providing any additional in-
COUNCIL APPROVES ICE DETENTION CTR MORATORIUM Mary Badame is the sole abstention in the 4-0-1 vote Drew Penner, Editor
On Monday night at a special meeting, Town Council approved an urgency ordinance that temporarily blocks US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement from locating detention centers in Los Gatos. Countering his critics, Mayor Rob Moore—up for reelection the next day— said he doesn’t think the move was just a symbolic gesture. “The City of San Jose and the County have prohibited ICE detention facilities, and so has Gilroy,” he said. “Very quickly, there will be very limited land in our county where a detention center could go…It’s important to recognize that for this DHS, money is no object.” A representative for Congressman Sam Liccardo asked the Town Council to approve the urgency ordinance, which required four votes to pass. Sue Ann Lorig, a Los Gatos resident who shares information about due process rights with local businesses, said she appreciates that Council was taking up the issue. “I urge you to please vote unanimous-
formation at this time,” Cpt. Greg Borromeo, department spokesperson, said in an email. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Le Jacqueline Duong issued an Emergency Protective Order against the man, which requires him to stay 300 yards away from the victim. The application, filed by an LGMSPD officer, states the victim, after being “strangled” for approximately 8-10 seconds, “was fearful for her life” and “unable to exit the apt. when police arrived.” Firearms were seized from the home and the suspect is not allowed to possess any until the order expires on Nov. 6 at 5pm, per the court document. The police returned to the location with a search warrant around 4:30pm Monday that allowed them to look for guns and ammunition. ly to approve the moratorium tonight, so that Los Gatos can join the other jurisdictions that have already taken action,” she said. “Your leadership will also encourage other cities and counties to follow.” On July 2, a chain retail shop downtown was visited by a man in uniform who claimed he was an ICE agent, Lorig said, adding staff there asked if he could return the next day to speak with a manager. “He never came back, but he really scared a worker who has been a naturalized citizen for over 20 years,” she said. “She couldn’t come to work for a few days, as the incident really shook her up.” The owner of a “trendy local restaurant” reported two of his employees skipped a day of work because of reports of ICE traffic stops on their routes to work, per Lorig. The vote was 4-0-1 in favor of the emergency measure, with Mary Badame, also up for reelection, abstaining. As soon as the meeting ended, Badame and her partner made a beeline for the exit and refused to comment on the issue or her abstention. In a statement released Tuesday, Liccardo cheered Council for taking action. “Local leaders in Los Gatos have demonstrated how using local land use tools effectively can protect their communities from the disruption of reckless and lawless federal actors,” he said in a release. “By taking this step now, these jurisdictions can protect the health and safety of their residents and restrict potential actions by DHS to convert vacant buildings into ICE detention or processing centers.”

HEARING POSTPONED AFTER RESIDENTS PACK LPES AUDITORIUM TO OPPOSE LG PLACEMENT Locals are fighting to keep the rapist out of their mountain community Drew Penner, Editor
On Oct. 28 just before noon at the Summit Store, all anyone seemed to be talking about was the upcoming court hearing for the potential release of “sexually violent predator” Michael Cheek to the Loma Prieta neighborhood of Los Gatos. And at a packed meeting at Loma Prieta Elementary School the night before— with the Santa Cruz County sheriff and multiple deputies in attendance—a question posed by an audience member was about whether Cheek would be allowed to shop for groceries at the mountaintop business or not. “It’s like your unofficial community center,” Sheriff Chris Clark responded, noting kids like to head to the Summit Store to eat after school. “I’ve had coffee events there.” He said an order prohibiting Cheek from entering the Summit Store might be one of the items discussed at the Santa Cruz County Superior Court hearing on Friday. Cheek was convicted of kidnapping, rape and forcible oral copulation back in 1980—and was sentenced for that to 20 years in prison. He escaped and committed another rape in 1981 (the victim in that case was 15). Cheek was subsequently convicted of rape and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor and was given 11 years and four months in addition to the earlier sentence. When Cheek’s prison term was almost up, the Santa Cruz County District Attorney had him declared a “sexually violent predator” under the Sexually Violent Predators Act. However, if a criminal can be treated in a less restrictive setting—and if the public is adequately protected (by close
supervision conditions)—they can be conditionally released into the wider world under the supervision of the Department of State Hospitals. The Department of State Hospitals (DSH) determined Cheek could be released on a conditional basis, finding he could be properly supervised in a less restrictive environment. Ben Abeln, the manager of the Summit Store, told the crowd he’s been told to be careful about how far to go in opposing the placement in order to avoid a lawsuit. He said some in the community think Check should be allowed to move in. “I put up a large banner yesterday that somebody took down,” he told the audience. “We’re in uncharted territory.” The proposed placement site at 25237 Terrace Grove Rd., which would be supervised by Liberty Healthcare, is near schools and neighborhoods where families live, the Sherrif has noted. Speakers at the meeting kept raising the telephone and wireless connectivity issues that are familiar to Santa Cruz Mountain residents. Bridget Freiri, director of the Expanded Learning Program for Loma Prieta Joint Union School District, told the Los Gatan she worries the authorities could get so many false reports of Cheek escaping, that if he ever did really go on the lam, they might not take it seriously. “Our cell service here is so spotty,” she said. “It’s going to be like the boy crying wolf.” Tara Rasmussen, of Scotts Valley, told the newspaper she’s concerned for her parents who live up on the summit. Under a 2018-20 contract, the Department of State Hospitals was required to pay Liberty Healthcare of California, Inc. $2,154.21 a month for a “pre-placement patient,” and up to $81,143.41 a month for an “enhanced supervision client add on cost.” ➝ Hearing, 17

MAC ENTERTAINS WITH 4TH ANNUAL LOWRIDER ART SHOWCASE Photos by Dinah Cotton / Los Gatan
Dinah Cotton, Contributor
Sunday Nov. 1, the United Lowrider Council of San Jose (ULCSJ) members parked classic lowrider cars on Montalvo Arts Center’s Great Lawn in front of the Villa. In addition to viewing of lowriders this event showcased aspects of the vibrant Hispanic culture, to share and enjoy. Attendance at this family event was free. This event is produced in collaboration with ULCSJ, Local Color San Jose and the MAC, all nonprofits. This was a culturally enlightening and relaxing afternoon. Food trucks provided savory eats. And there was a full bar on the terrace. Bayology Radio (bayologyradio.com)—AKA “The Bay Area’s Oldest”—provided the disjockeying.
A culture emerges
Lowrider culture began in the 40s in Southern California. Stock cars were lowered towards the road and driven around neighborhoods slowly. These lowriders cars helped to promote a cultural identity—and became quite the art form—within the Hispanic community. Today’s lowriders are much more extravagant than the original ones. Many are considered works of art. This year’s fourth annual ULCSJ event was held on Dia de la Muertos. Many lowriders had altars of remembrance in them, displaying traditional symbolism and history behind this sacred date. These cultural expressions were a joy to see. Erin Salazar, the founder and of Local Color San Jose spoke. “We are an artist-led nonprofit that supports creatives and creative work across the South Bay,” Salazar said. “I also want to shout-out to the Lowriders Council—and every single one of the artists that brought their creations and their beautiful creations out here for us to view today.” At Charmaine’s Garden Terrace, Local Color artists along with Montalvo volunteers set up their wares. There were even arts and crafts tables. How about an all-women lowrider car club? Angel Romero founded one. When she was very young, her mother drove her in lowrider groups to fall asleep. Today, Romero’s lowrider has her mother’s portrait painted on her lowrider in remembrance. In another lowrider “Chola” Lola’s lowrider’s trunk displays an altar with photos of her pets that had gone “over the rainbow bridge,” as well as family members that have passed on.
Hispanic heritage
In addition to the stunning lowrider cars on display, cultural dances were performed and children’s activities were held. Presentation High School’s folklórico performance group Alebrijes de Flor Performing Arts, is a nationally recognized competitive dance team. Their danc-

Montalvo Arts Center reaches out
Montalvo Arts Center Executive Director Angela McConnell told the festive crowd their vision can be distilled down to a single word: belonging. “It really is our goal to enhance the lives of all people—with ALL, with a capital ‘A’ underlined, in italics and bold—ALL people. So, we hope you feel very welcomed, and we hope you will come back and check out our programming. We are open almost every day of the year—to hike, look at art and be inspired by the creative process. So, thank you for being here. We love these cars, we love our patrons and our friends, and we love all of you.” If you missed the lowriders this year, just know it is an annual event. Plans are being made for next year’s lowrider afternoon at Montalvo. TEENS DONATE 100 CHROMEBOOKS TO CAMPBELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Youth-led nonprofit Kids Empower Kids partners with Rosemary Elementary to bridge educational gaps Staff Report

until you believe in yourself," shared the founders of Kids Empower Kids. Since its founding, Kids Empower Kids has raised over $45,000, organized more than 25 fundraisers and service initiatives, engaged over 50 volunteers, and partnered with more than 10 organizations. Its community impact has also earned recognition from the City of San José. The Rosemary Elementary partnership reflects KEK's belief that meaningful change comes not just from providing resources, but from building lasting connections. For these young volunteers, the greatest reward isn't simply counting the number of Chromebooks distributed. It's seeing a child's confidence grow, watching a difficult concept finally click, and knowing that their time and effort have made a difference. About Kids Empower Kids: Founded in 2021 by Aanya Remi, Kids Empower Kids is a youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering young people through education, volunteerism, and community service.
KEK
A group of Bay Area teenagers is proving that young people can make a meaningful difference in their communities. Kids Empower Kids (KEK), a youthled nonprofit founded in 2021, has partnered with Rosemary Elementary School in Campbell to provide 100 Chromebooks to students while expanding academic support through tutoring and classroom volunteering. The initiative began with a simple goal: help students gain access to the technology they need to succeed academically. Through fundraising and community partnerships, KEK donated 100 Chromebooks along with additional educational resources. But the organization's commitment didn't end with the donations. Recognizing that access to technology is only one part of educational success, KEK launched a summer tutoring program at Campbell Library and expanded it into a year-round initiative, supporting 25 elementary students. Through personalized, one-on-one academic assistance, student volunteers help younger learners strengthen their skills, overcome challenges, and build confidence in their abilities. When Rosemary Elementary later expressed a need for additional classroom support, KEK expanded its efforts. Twelve high school volunteers were recruited to assist teachers across five classrooms during school service days and holidays. In one particularly meaningful moment, a teacher shared that a student who had struggled with a learning skill for two weeks finally made a breakthrough after receiving one-on-one attention from a volunteer. "We started by providing Chromebooks because we wanted every child to have the tools to learn at home. But we quickly realized that access to technology is only part of the solution. Sometimes, what makes the biggest difference is having someone sit beside you, explain something differently, and believe in you

Anhelina Baftalovska is a data analytics worker turned flower chain owner Laur a Ness, Contributor
What’s a Ukrainian with a background in data analytics doing making floral arrangements in a small shopping center near a Best Western in Los Gatos? Turns out Anhelina Baftalovska, a Los Gatos resident and mother of three, is now a member of the franchising world. She just opened the first French Florist boutique in the South Bay, a franchise that began in 1978, and now has 20 locations across the United States. French Florist, with its classic logo and regimented approach, has a growing presence in California. Locations in the Bay Area include San Francisco West, Los Gatos and Sonoma. Each boutique is independently owned and operated, bringing local expertise and personal service to its community while benefiting from the resources, technology and standards of the French Florist brand. The French Florist in Los Gatos, operated by Baftalovska, is a 1,243-square-foot atelier featuring handcrafted premium arrangements, chocolates, candles and teddy bears. It officially opened Oct. 28 at 53 Los Gatos Saratoga Rd., Unit 105. A ribbon-cutting will take place on Nov. 18. If you know where Restaurant ASA Los Gatos is, you now know where to get some well-curated floral arrangements, which you can order out of their catalog—or you can custom-design your own with the help of Anhelina and her floral designers. Each one is delivered in a sturdy box that says, “You are Loved.” Already, people have discovered her. “I’ve been doing deliveries all over, including San Carlos and San Jose,” Baftalovska told me, as she showed off buckets of beautiful roses in shades of peach, pumpkin, magenta and pink, alongside stunning deep red-violet Calla lilies. They look exceptional aside pure white roses in a highly popular arrangement called, “French Kiss,” which will set you back $170. Originally born in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, Anhelina and her husband Nelson moved to the United States in 2016 and made Los Gatos their home. After building a career in sales in Ukraine, she pursued a new professional path, gaining experience in data analytics, staffing and healthcare data. Eventually, she wanted to start her own business, and that’s where French Florist came in.
“When we met the French Florist team, we immediately connected with them, because they represented everything we were looking for in a brand,” Baftalovska said. She believes flowers have the power to transform an ordinary day into something extraordinary. “In France, flowers are woven into everyday life,” she said. “They're not reserved for birthdays, anniversaries, or special occasions. They're part of the home, part of the atmosphere, and part of the simple pleasure of living beautifully.” Asked what makes French Florist different, she points to the fact it is an established luxury floral brand with access to resources and consistency. “Our flowers are sourced directly from exceptional growers, helping us deliver fresher blooms and beautiful arrangements designed for lasting enjoyment,” says Baftalovska. “By working directly with growers rather than relying on traditional intermediaries, we can reduce the time flowers spend moving through the supply chain. That means fresher blooms, longer-lasting arrangements and exceptional quality for our clients.” From classic roses to distinctive seasonal varieties, every flower is selected with the same intention: to bring extraordinary beauty into everyday life. Asked to name her favorite combination of flowers, she defers to the corporate policy: Whatever makes our clients feel seen and cared for. She says that flowers are deeply personal. “Some people are drawn to the timeless elegance of roses, others love the lush beauty of hydrangeas, the romance of peonies or the unexpected charm of seasonal blooms,” Baftalovska says. “That's what makes floral design so special. There isn't one perfect combination. There's the perfect combination for you. Because the most beautiful flowers aren't necessarily our favorites. They're the ones that become yours.” Michael Jacobson, CEO of French Florist, calls Los Gatos an exciting market for French Florist, saying, “The town has a strong appreciation for local businesses and high-quality experiences, which makes it a natural fit for our brand. We’re so grateful to establish roots here and grow alongside Anhelina and the Los Gatos community.” Details French Florist’s same-day flower delivery in Los Gatos and surrounding areas: frenchflorist.com/local/ca/los-gatos or call (415) 818-8181

WILDCATS CLINCH A SHARE OF THE PAL BAY DIVISION TITLE
SPORTS
Football team firing on all cylinders with playoffs looming Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor
It’s a good thing Los Gatos High School football coach Mark Krail scheduled some perennial powers in non-league competition because the Wildcats certainly aren’t getting much resistance from Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division opponents this season. Los Gatos has steamrolled four division foes, with Menlo-Atherton being the latest casualty. In cruising to a 42-20 victory over the Bears on Oct. 31, the Wildcats (8-1 overall, 4-0 league) clinched at least a share of the league championship with one regular-season game remaining. Los Gatos can capture the title outright if it beats rival Wilcox on Nov. 6. Jack Siri had another superb performance, completing 14-of-19 passes for 169 yards and three TDs. Devonte Troutt carried the ball 14 times for 93 yards and a score. In a 49-14 win over Menlo School the previous week, Troutt delivered the finest game of his burgeoning career. He rushed for a career-high 234 yards on 18 carries and six—count ’em, six—touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 94 yards, including a long TD reception. Troutt’s seven TDs ranks right up there among the best single-game performances in program history. Shane Harmer was a multi-purpose threat, with 68 yards receiving and 168 yards on kickoff returns. Jackson Fitzpatrick led the way defensively with 10 tackles, including three for loss. Lane Newman and Ryan Gangemi each had an interception, while Nico Flores blocked a punt that TJ Lombardi scooped up and returned 75 yards for a TD to make it 14-0 with 2:33 left in the first quarter. Troutt’s 25-yard TD run accounted for the team’s initial score, and Los Gatos would make it 21-0 when Siri connected with Harmer on a perfectly executed 47-yard play—a straight go route down the right sideline—to give the Wildcats a commanding lead. Midway through the
PROLIFIC Wildcats tailback Devonte Troutt had one of the more memorable performances in program history when he scored seven touchdowns in a 49-14 win over Menlo School on Oct. 23. third quarter, Siri scored on a well-designed naked bootleg, a three-yard TD run that had the M-A defense completely fooled. To give an idea on how dominant the Wildcats have been in league play this season, the 42 points vs. M-A represented their fewest in four contests. They managed to put up 49 points each against Sacred Heart Prep, the King’s Academy and Menlo School.
Saratoga 26, Homestead 22
The Falcons continued to surge by dealing the Mustangs their only loss in Peninsula Athletic League Lake Division play. Saratoga improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in league play, and is in a tie for second with Gunn in the standings, just half a game back of Homestead (7-2, 5-1). Saratoga can earn a share of the league title with a win over MacDonald in the regular-season finale. Falcons quarterback Anson Hulme completed 16-of-28 passes for 200 yards
and added another 160 yards rushing, including two TDs. The teams were tied 7-7 after three quarters when the offensive fireworks started. After a Homestead score early in the fourth, Saratoga responded with Hulme’s 80-yard TD pass to Justice Andrews, who finished with six catches for 132 yards. Hulme proved to be a playmaker defensively as well. He recovered a fumble on Homestead’s ensuing possession, then led the Falcons on a six-play, 65-yard drive, capped by his 11-yard run to make it 19-14. For good measure, he also blocked a field goal. The Mustangs responded with a TD and two-point conversion, retaking the lead, 22-19 with 9:24 to go. Hulme’s 40-yard TD run with 2 ½ minutes left accounted for the final margin. Andrews also was a force defensively, producing two interceptions. Motekiai Asikia had 12 tackles, Hulme 10 and Nick Wilhelm eight for Saratoga. Benji Zinman totaled four quarterback hur-
ries, providing the push on the Saratoga defensive front.
Girls Volleyball
The Wildcats suffered a straight-sets loss to St. Francis on Halloween in the opening round of the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. However, since each of the eight teams that qualify for the Open earn automatic berths into the CIF NorCal Tournament, their season is not over. Los Gatos was one of only two public schools—the other being fellow SCVAL De Anza Division member Palo Alto—to make the Open Division. Los Gatos went 9-3 to finish second in the SCVAL De Anza Division, splitting the season series with league champion Palo Alto. It has been fairly consistent throughout, producing stellar results in tournaments and in league play. Some of the team’s top performers include Sienna McGrath, Caylin Thomas, Lulu Farwell, Stella Kanter, Olivia Reese Bill and Sadie Bins.

VICTIM LIVED IN LOS GATOS Hearing, from page 8 In Oct. 15, 2024, California State Auditor Grant Parks said DSH “does not have an effective oversight process to track and monitor Liberty Healthcare’s implementation of the recommendations that result from its reviews. Consequently, DSH has allowed several known deficiencies to persist since at least 2019 without holding Liberty Healthcare accountable for implementing timely resolutions.” Parks noted the program’s costs had ballooned from $6.6 million in fiscal 2018–19 to $11.5 million in fiscal year 2022–23. Cheek’s situation has already been pored over by the California Court of Appeal, Sixth Appellate District, which overturned the lower court’s ruling that a homeschool made official during the drive to keep him out of Bonny Doon could not be considered a preventative factor. And it’s relevant to this new Santa Cruz Mountains option, because the Sheriff is working to legalize multiple homeschools in order to keep him out of the neighborhood. No one seemed to have any workable ideas about where exactly to put a “sexually violent predator” such as Cheek. In interviews, some suggested a suburban locale like Scotts Valley, but then seemed less certain when pressed about the concept of finding a home for the rapist near a greater density of vulnerable individuals. But locals have been particularly frustrated about the attempts to allow Cheek to live in the very area where he committed his crimes. While on the stand in one of the original cases, Cathy Stratton, a woman who was living in Los Gatos with a roommate, described how Cheek met her on the beach in Santa Cruz before he forced her to drive up into the mountains multiple times to victimize her. Cheek was to go before Nancy De La Peña on Friday at 1:30pm. But Santa Cruz County District Attorney Jeff Rosell announced Thursday the hearing had been postposed to Jan. 22 (in Department 6), “while the proposed placement location, 25237 Terrace Grove Road in Los Gatos,” is reviewed further. “Our office believes that public safety and community concerns must remain central to any decision regarding the proposed release,” Rosell said. “We oppose the release and remain committed to advocating for the safety and well-being of our community.” *Read the full story at LosGatan.com
