THINKING ABOUT GETTING A NEW WOOD STOVE?

A

modern wood stove, insert, or fireplace is an excellent choice as a primary source of heat for your home. Heating your home with a modern wood stove is both economical and eco-friendly, not to mention the bonus of coziness and beauty. While open, wood burning fireplaces do not generate a meaningful amount of heat, modern wood burning stoves, inserts, and fireplaces are intended to be used as the primary source of heat for your home. With overnight burn times and air controls, heating your home with wood is now simple and green.

ARE PEOPLE STILL ALLOWED TO HEAT WITH WOOD?

Yes! Because modern wood stoves are so clean burning and efficient, and because wood is a renewable fuel source, there’s even government incentives for investing in a wood stove or insert. There’s a federal tax credit for investing in a new wood stove or insert that began last year and goes through 2032.

IS HEATING YOUR HOUSE WITH WOOD ECO-FRIENDLY?

Heating your home with a modern wood stove is eco-friendly. Wood is a renewable fuel source, locally sourced and carbon neutral. Efficiency and clean burning go hand in hand. The pollution controls are what make a modern wood stove a better and more efficient heater. A very old wood stove or open, wood burning fireplace can produce 100 grams of emissions per hour. Particulate emissions are fuel going up the chimney and polluting the air, instead of being turned into heat for your home. Modern wood fireplaces have pollution controls that burn those particulate emissions inside the stove, so that what’s coming out the chimney is mostly steam. All modern, EPA certified wood stoves emit less than 2 grams of emissions per hour.

PROJECT COST

Different options for brand and material, along with variables with installation make it so there is a wide range of cost for getting a wood stove. Your local fireplace store will be

able to give you specific pricing, so that you know exactly how much the project will be before you commit to moving forward. With the tax credit that’s happening, now is a great time to invest.

HOW TO GET STARTED

Stop by your local fireplace store and have an industry professional help you pick the right wood stove for you. It’s good to be prepared with the approximate square footage of the space you’re heating. Photos are also helpful, especially if you’re interested in getting an insert. While in the showroom you can look at displays and make choices about which options will be best for you and your home. If you need an installer, a professional installer will then come to your home for a site check. They will put together your pipe list, make sure everything will fit and look nice, then give you an exact bid for installation.

RETAILER

There are many decisions to be made when choosing a fireplace. These decisions can be

made easier by working with a great local retailer. The best stores will have knowledgeable, experienced staff who can help walk you through the project. They’ll be able to provide technical advice, or connect you with a qualified, experienced installer if needed. The store you choose to do business with will help you with post-installation service and answer any questions that come up. A high-quality fireplace is built to last 20-25 years, so the folks you choose to work with are people you’ll be connected to for years to come. Please consider choosing Woodstove & Sun to help you with your fireplace or outdoor living needs. We offer wood, gas, pellet and electric stoves, fireplaces and inserts, as well as Polywood outdoor furniture, kitchens, grills, fire pits, pizza ovens, and umbrellas. Our showroom is located at 510 Soquel Ave in Santa Cruz. Please call, email or stop by! TOWN OFFICIALS FRUSTRATED AS STATE CONTINUES TO PUSH THEM ON HOUSING Sacramento calls for much more ‘aggressive’ targets Drew Penner, Reporter

Listening to Los Gatos’ elected officials talk about the most recent Housing Element rejection from the Department of Housing and Community Development, at the Dec. 5 Council meeting, one might think the homes ministry had pulled a baitand-switch. “‘What? That’s not what you told us we needed to do,’” Councilmember Rob Rennie said, revealing the thoughts that raced through his mind when the negative feedback on the residential development plan arrived. “It’s frustrating.” The Dec. 1 letter harps on Los Gatos for not doing enough to plan to remove barriers to housing based on race—and other factors—and not presenting a comprehensive-enough plan on how it'll ensure affordable units actually get built. Sacramento wants to see more specific—and loftier—goals for improving housing options for people of all income levels. After all, “the Town is wholly a racially concentrated area of affluence” with the “highest median incomes in contrast to the rest of the region,” the State points out. “Actions should be added and revised with aggressive numeric targets and geographic targets throughout the Town, including lower-density neighborhoods,” HCD Senior Program Manager Paul McDougall wrote to Los Gatos Community Development Director Joel Paulson. “Examples include creating more housing choices and affordability in single-family neighborhoods beyond complying with law (e.g., SB 9, ADUs) such as missing middle housing types, targeting affordable housing funding, homesharing, more than one unit of converted space within a single-family structure, increased multifamily capacity, enhanced efforts on religious institutional sites and other alternative land use and financing strategies.” Essentially, it was seven pages of

bad news, from the perspective of the municipal officials. Their hopes had been built up by a consultant who promised Los Gatos was “95%” of the way to a successful Housing Element. “Yours is very close to getting there,” Veronica Tam, of Veronica Tam & Associates, told the Planning Commission in November. “What is likely going to happen is when we resubmit the revisions to the State, by the end of the week, they would be able to incorporate the majority of the revisions that we have made and dismiss most of the concerns.” Los Gatos officials are balancing their desire to appease HCD by taking tangible steps to ensure poorer residents, and people who’ve historically been shut out of the community for other reasons, can soon make a life here, with the strong feelings of many locals who oppose proposals for several-story multi-family housing projects. “I’m trying to think back through the comments we’ve got,” said Rennie, rubbing his face with both hands during the Dec. 5 discussion, which revolved around easing story pole requirements for developers (which HCD had flagged as one constraint). “They haven’t been completely clear with what they want. It’s almost like peeling an onion. We get a little more each time of what they want. And I’m still trying to look below the layers of onions here, in hopes of shortcutting some of the rounds with them.” Rennie read out the section of the letter where McDougall talks about the “aggressive numeric targets” that are needed, including in “lower-density neighborhoods,” even beyond the minimums listed in the Regional Housing Needs Allocation tables. “So, they still think we should do more,” he said. Rennie had pushed back on up-zoning in single-family neighborhoods across Town during the General Plan update process. He also made the motion to remove the post office site downtown from the Housing Element’s sites inventory—a course of action that was affirmed earlier in the Dec. 5 meeting. It’s not that the Town hasn’t been

making progress, as rejections have come in one after the other, it’s just been too incremental, McDougall said in his Dec. 1 letter. “The element now includes actions to promote an inclusive community; however, the element must provide specific analysis of income and RCAA at a regional level (town compared to the broader region) to better formulate appropriate policies and programs,” he wrote. “The analysis should at least address trends, conditions, coincidence with other fair housing factors (e.g., race, highest resource, overpayment), effectiveness or absence of past strategies (e.g., lack of publicly assisted housing and lack of multifamily zoning), local data and knowledge and other relevant factors.” The State seemed displeased that 80% of the lower-income housing the Town is required to build is concentrated in two census tracts. Mayor Maria Ristow said she shares Rennie’s irritation with HCD’s communication strategy. “With every single letter we get back, there are things that didn’t come up in the discussion,” she said. “There are things that we comply with after one submission and then we’re told to do it a different way.” During the meeting Council agreed story poles will no longer be required for multi-family and mixed-use developments (digital renderings will be used instead), though this still needs to be formalized with a future vote.

WILDCATS DENIED STORYBOOK ENDING Jonathan Natividad

Los Gatos falls in state title game

dec e mbe r 13-1 9, 20 23 : los gatan.co m

Juan Reyes, Reporter

The Los Gatos High football team was on the cusp of bringing home the program’s first-ever CIF State Championship Bowl Game title. However, the Wildcats came up just short following a 45-42 loss to Central Valley Christian of Visalia in the Division 2-A championship game at Pasadena City College on Dec. 9. Despite the loss, it was a heck of a ride for Los Gatos High in 2023. “This is all uncharted waters,” Wildcats coach Mark Krail said. “We have our banquet on Monday [Dec. 11] and so we're going to turn right around and celebrate these guys. I think they're going to take away from it a feeling of wow, we did some really good things.” The Central Coast Section Division I champion Wildcats finished as the second best team in the section rankings after capturing its 16th title in the program’s history. AJ Minyard and his senior teammates got over the playoff hump after losing to Bellarmine two years ago and then falling to Mitty in the 2022 playoffs. “We just never wanted to see that happen again,” Minyard said. “We took that upon ourselves to just keep going, keep going and keep going.” Los Gatos definitely kept it going following a 14-6 win over El Cerrito High in the NorCal Division 2-A Championship Bowl Game on Dec. 2. That put them at No. 33 in the state rankings. Jaylen Thomas and most of the seniors have been playing together since sixth grade. They were also part of the group who had their freshman year cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Knowing that this is gonna be the last time we're putting the pads on together, it's just hurtful,” he said. “We were really a family this year. … I feel like I could walk up to anybody and just talk to him, like he's a brother to me.” Minyard called it a special season, especially after growing up in the area and always wanting to play football for the

Wildcats. He said they grew up together and he strongly believes Los Gatos has the biggest brotherhood in the entire state of California. “I'm excited that I got to live it out,” he said. Minyard is a Santa Cruz native but said he considers himself more of a Los Gatos guy who was once the ball boy for the Wildcats about nine years ago. “I've been part of this program, Los Gatos roots. This is my town,” Minyard said. Central Valley Christian was No. 66 in the state behind a spectacular season from Fresno State commit Bryson Donelson. The standout senior running back racked up 3,095 yards rushing and 44 touchdowns on 270 carries, and hauled in 31 receptions for 563 yards receiving and nine scores going into last week’s state title game. The Wildcats’ defense did a decent job of containing Donelson, yet he still man-

aged to score three times including a 70-yard touchdown run that gave them a 17-point cushion in the third quarter. Prior to that, the Cavaliers took an early 3-0 lead in what was a defensive see-saw battle in the opening stanza. Los Gatos had a golden chance to respond, but a promising drive stalled after the offense was stopped short on a 4th-and-1 conversion attempt. The defense came through with a big play of its own when Scott Garwood recorded an interception for Los Gatos. Yet, it didn’t take long for the Wildcats to turn the ball right over. Minyard was hit from behind on a pass attempt, and the ball sailed directly into the hands of lineman Grant Shannon for the interception. Donelson capitalized on the turnover with a 12-yard TD run for a 10-0 lead. The first half woes continued for Los Gatos when running back Boxer Kopcsak-Yeung fumbled the ball in the second quarter.

CVC scored on the very next play, and then Kroeze connected with Ryan Lewis for a 38-yard TD that gave the Cavaliers a 24-7 lead going into halftime. “A little bit of shoulda, woulda, coulda in that first half,” Krail said. “We gave up the one right at the end of the half, which kind of took a little wind out of our sails.” The Wildcats were in desperate need of a spark coming out of the break. They started to cook with fire following a 63-yard TD reception from Minyard to Thomas, cutting the deficit to 24-14. “We came out in the second half fired up, our coach gave us that halftime speech,” Thomas said. “Our offense was just working. We just started putting plays together, just started connecting. … We didn't slow down No. 6 [Donelson] as much as we wanted to, but at the end of the day we made the comeback. We just couldn't finish.” Kopcsak-Yeung kept Los Gatos within reach after a 42-yard TD run, and Minyard scrambled his way 12 yards into the end zone that made it 38-28 with 10:17 remaining in the game. After not being able to get off the field most of the game, Los Gatos’ defense finally made the huge stop it needed and was in prime position to keep chipping away at CVC’s lead. Instead, Thomas mishandled the punt and lost the ball in Wildcats territory. Donelson scored his third TD of the evening that put Central Valley Christian ahead, 45-28. The Wildcats wouldn’t give up that easy, though. Minyard orchestrated a pair of scoring drives that gave Los Gatos a fighting chance in the end. Max Thomas hauled in a 24-yard TD, and then Minyard connected with Owen Panu for a 19-yard score that made it 45-42 with less than one minute remaining in the game. “I think it's just our tenacity,” Minyard said. “We pride ourselves on being fast and physical. And we're never gonna put that aside. We’re always gonna be full force no matter what the score is, what the time is, and we're just gonna keep going.” The miraculous come-from-behind attempt was all but over when an onside kick attempt from Sam Pearman was recovered by CVC. All the Los Gatos players and coaches could do was watch from across the field as the Cavaliers celebrated their first state title in the program’s history. Despite the loss, there was no reason for them to hang their heads. “This experience has just been unique,” Thomas said. “I couldn't have asked to go to a different high school with different coaches with different guys. I wouldn't want to, not in a million years.”

As we retreat indoors for the (hopefully) rainy winter, we’re fortunate to have a world-class public library in our community, with resources and amenities that could only be imagined years ago. It seems that Los Gatans have always recognized the value of a public library. In 1898, a committee of prominent citizens was established by the Board of Trade to find a location for a library and reading room that would be managed by the Town. The Los Gatos Floral Society offered to donate its book collection, and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union followed suit with 350 “choice books.” A location was found in the back of a retail store on W. Main Street and $16 was budgeted to fix up the room. The tiny library, which opened with 846 books, was available to all 1,600 residents free of charge as long as they were recommended by a “responsible person.” When a larger facility was needed to accommodate a rapidly growing popu-

NEW CONCEPT The Carnegie Library Children’s Corner, circa 1906. A separate Children’s Room was constructed in the basement in 1919. lation, the town acquired land adjacent to the Episcopal Church on University Avenue and applied for a grant from the Carnegie Foundation. Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant and self-made business tycoon who became one of the

wealthiest Americans of the 19th century, devoted the last decades of his life to large-scale philanthropy with special emphasis on education. Between 1883 and 1919, he funded the construction of more than 3,000 free public libraries

throughout the English-speaking world. Carnegie’s $10,000 grant to Los Gatos for a new library building was especially timely. An acceptance letter arrived on Oct. 17, 1901, just four days after a catastrophic fire destroyed most of the downtown business district. People were jubilant, believing that their town would soon be on the road to recovery. Construction was completed in 1903. Citizens embraced their new 2,000-square-foot library and welcomed an ordinance which forbade spitting tobacco juice on the floor, stealing library materials, and using profane language in addressing the librarian. In 1906, librarian Henrianna Rankin created a Children’s Corner in the oneroom library. Los Gatos was the first small town in California to offer this concept, which the State Library in Sacramento used as an example for other towns. Over the years, the Children’s Corner proved to be a highly popular destination. When the Carnegie Library was damaged in the 1906 earthquake, it was held together simply by wrapping a thick steel cable around the foundation. By the early 1950s, cracks had appeared in the walls and ceiling, and beams in the basement began to sag. No thought was given to historic preservation, so the stately building was ultimately condemned as unsafe. It was torn down in 1954 and the site was sold to the church for use as a parking lot. All that remains of the Carnegie Library are the twin palm trees that originally flanked the main entrance. After a 10-year stay in interim quarters on E. Main Street, the town library moved to the new Civic Center in 1966. By then, the book collection had grown to 70,000 volumes. The new Memorial Library featured a separate children’s wing and a large reference room with a microfilm machine on the lower level. The current library, built in 2012 to replace the cramped Civic Center site, is a 30,000-square-foot architectural marvel and the pride of Los Gatos. From a modest beginning 125 years ago, each of the five generations of public libraries has proven to be a valuable asset in our community. Alan Feinberg is the founder of the LOST Gatos Project. Our mission is to reignite passion among Los Gatos residents for preserving our town’s unique character and historic treasures before they’re lost forever.
