COLLEGE FASHION SHOW PRESENTS DESIGNS FROM UP-AND-COMERS

Evening directed by Alexander McQueen collaborator Ungless

A steady beat pumps out over a glossy white runway. A curtain shields models wearing items from up-and-coming designers, in a show creative directed by early Alexander McQueen collaborator Simon Ungless. Was this New York Fashion Week? Paris? Or Milan?

In fact, this was the Friday evening “main event,” of the May 16-18 Cilker Annual Art + Design Expo at West Valley College in Saratoga, a celebration of retiring Design Faculty Chair Diane Hurd.

It was an opportunity for the students to prove they’re ready to take on the fashion industry. And with a wide array of unique creations—from a pompom jacket bursting with color, to a lavish crocodile skin gown—the students and alumni of West Valley demonstrated they have a firm grasp on their fashion identities.

BOOST SECURED BY CHAMBER’S NEW ADMIN

Council unanimous in its support for destination marketing

Last year, the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce fought a pitched battle to win a top-up in funding out of remaining Covid-relief dollars, from $55,000 to $88,000. This time around, Council was eager to show its support of new Executive Director Jennifer Lin, unanimously agreeing to maintain the higher level out of Town coffers—with the potential for more increases down the line. And at Council May 7, Lin shared how proud she is of what her crew has been able to accomplish.

SALVATION ARMY WOMEN'S AUXILIARY 5TH ANNUAL A.R.T. GARDEN LUNCHEON

Event raises $25,000 to send youth to Camp Redwood Glen

On May 17, despite an early morning chill, the day blossomed into ideal outdoor luncheon weather.

But the Salvation Army Silicon Valley Women's Auxiliary 5th Annual Work of A.R.T. Garden Luncheon and Silent Auction was not your ordinary get-together.

It was a gathering with a serious purpose. After all, the three letters stand for “adventure,” “roots” and “transformation.”

This purpose? To raise funds to help

The Salvation Army in Silicon Valley expand its facilities, and to send children to attend summer camp.

And not just any camp—Camp Redwood Glen.

The getaway location for youth is all about "creating space where change is possible.”

It’s a place where children can escape the difficult realities of their daily lives to experience the peace and serenity only found in nature.

The generous attendees raised $25,000.

Also, many went home with fabulous artwork and a full heart.

Hats off to all of these women and their very successful fundraiser.

STUDENTS FEATURED IN ‘BE-YOU-TIFUL’ CONTEST EXHIBIT

On May 18, the Triton Museum in Santa Clara opened its new digital art gallery with poetry, video, essays and visual art from the Eating Disorder Resource Center’s “Be-You-tiful” contest. Students were invited to submit pieces exploring how social media and the world around them influences the way they see themselves. The exhibit runs through June 16.

Shivaani Kumara Venkatesh, a 7th Grade student at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, in Saratoga, won second place in the middle school poetry category with her poem “Reality.” It’s reprinted below with permission.

REALITY

The girl in the mirror looks a lot like me Same height, same hair, same face

A shadow of whom I used to be Now I’m a stranger in this place

Yearning to be someone special Vigor unleashed, untamed Endeavoring to make vivid dreams come true With fervor, I lit the flame

Like Icarus, I soared into the sun–Blinded by desire I wanted to achieve

To satisfy

Within me, that burning fire

I used to be extraordinary Now I’m just extra ordinary I spread my wings, felt so free

Let my hopes and dreams take flight

Then crashed into reality: I’m a shadow of whom I used to be

But there’s a glimmer on the horizon A rainbow through the rain Once more, I feel myself rising With nothing to lose, and everything to gain

LOS GATOS HIGH BOYS LACROSSE TEAM MAKES HISTORY WITH FIRST CCS TITLE

Wildcats lead wire-to-wire in 12-10 win over Palo Alto

The Los Gatos High School boys lacrosse team wasn’t exactly firing on all cylinders entering the Central Coast Section playoffs.

The Wildcats lost two of their final three regular season contests, including one to Carmel High School for the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s second automatic CCS playoff berth.

“We kind of limped into the playoffs,” Wildcats coach Chris Nespor said.

But once Nespor saw the playoff bracket come out, he knew the team had a golden opportunity to win a section championship. That’s because Los Gatos which earned an at-large berth had already owned wins over four of the seven other teams in the Division II field.

After earning the top seed in Division II, the Wildcats proved they were the class of the field with a 12-10 win over No. 2 seed Palo Alto High School in the championship match on May 18 at Carlmont High School in Belmont. Jack Baldwin scored four goals, Luke Goddard and Zach Gouldrup had three goals apiece and Cullen Wood finished with two scores to help clinch Los Gatos’ first title in program history.

“The team came out on fire,” Nespor said, referring to the Wildcats taking a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. “But as expected in a championship match, Palo Alto punched back and got back in it.”

Palo Alto cut its deficit to 8-4 at halftime and eventually got within two goals, but never closer.

“They continued to decrease the gap as the game went on, but we did a good job of staving off many of their runs,” Nespor said. “We would score a big goal or get a key stop on defense to keep them at bay.”

Sophomore Zach Otoupal, the twotime PCAL Gabilan Division Defensive Player of the Year, collected 13 ground balls and added two assists, while junior goalie Carter Paradice had 11 saves. Nespor praised the two

defensive stalwarts while also giving credit to a couple of other players who played vital roles in the win.

“Jack Donovan was a spark plug, energy guy for us, good on the ground balls and super strong on the defensive end,” Nespor said. “He produces many plays that aren’t seen in the stat box but 100% seen by the coaching staff.”

The latter also applies to junior Luis Coderque-Ferrer, who handles the majority of the team’s faceoffs.

“Luis took all but two of our faceoffs today, and I felt like we had the advantage,” Nespor said. Alongside contributions from the wingers, Coderque-Ferrer’s performance was key to the Wildcats setting the tone early in the game, he said.

This season, Baldwin, Otoupal and Paradice earned PCAL Gabilan Division first team honors, while Donovan, Goddard and sophomores Jack Harrington and Ben Reilly made second team all league. Coderque-Ferrer received a spot on the all sportsmanship team.

For Nespor, this was his sixth and final season coaching the Los Gatos boys lacrosse team. He’ll be taking a job at his alma mater, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he was inducted into the school’s Lacrosse Hall of Fame, in 2020.

“The last six years, I couldn’t ask for anything more in terms of support from the parents and the school,” he said. “Obviously, it’s special to end the season on a win, especially for our seniors. To go out by doing something that’s never happened before in Los Gatos lacrosse history is a pretty big deal. And for this being my last year, it’s pretty cool to go out on top.”

Nespor departs leaving the program in excellent shape, as Los Gatos is projected to return a half-dozen starters from this year’s team for the 2025 season.

“Our sophomore and junior classes are super strong groups,” Nespor said. “We’re excited about our freshmen, too. That speaks to the future of this program and where it’s headed.”

Track and Field

The Los Gatos High girls 4x400 meter relay team highlighted the Wildcats’ performance in the CCS

Championships on May 18 at Gilroy High School.

The team of Vanessa Leathem, Shea Elmore, Madison Kohli and Elise Greenstreet cruised check that, blazed to the finish in a personal-record (PR) of 3 minutes, 54.05 seconds.

They won by more than three seconds, a rather comfortable margin in a 4x400 relay.

The top three finishers in each event, along with anyone who hits a State meet at-large standard, advances to the CIF State Championships, May 24-25 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Kohli, the freshman sensation, also took third in the open 400 meters to qualify for State in that event.

She nailed a PR of 55.99 seconds, her second lifetime best in as many weeks. In the CCS Semis a week earlier, Kohli finished in 56.16 seconds. Junior Nicole Steiner finished second in the shot put with a mark of 41 feet, 10 ½ inches.

She also took fifth in the discus with a mark of 114 feet even. Elmore placed seventh in the 800 meter run in PR of 2:15.71. The Los Gatos girls finished seventh in the CCS team standings. Meanwhile, Matt Gladney was the top

placer on the boys team, finishing third in the 110 hurdles in 14.62. Aydon Stefanopoulos and Jensen Bidmead finished in seventh- and eighth place, respectively, in the 1,600-meter run.

Madison Kohli, seen here in the CCS Semis on May 11, helped the girls 4x400 relay team to a first-place finish in the Championships on May 18 at Gilroy High School. Kohli, Shea Elmore, Vanessa

THE STONE HOUSE AT 15 UNIVERSITY AVE TELLS ITS TALE

Residence constructed for photographers from Pennsylvania

Have you ever wondered about the little stone house at 15 University Avenue? In the middle of downtown, it seems oddly out of place. In fact, it’s the only residence within the boundaries of the Los Gatos Historic Commercial District.

The house is a 1906 Craftsman bungalow, a style embraced by many Californians in the early 20th century. Natural materials were highly popular design elements back then, since they helped to reflect a building’s rural surroundings. While stones taken from Los Gatos Creek were often used to build walls, foundations, and chimneys here in town, this is the only wood frame house with an exterior covered in rounded rocks. Although it appears that the rocks are structural, they’re actually just decorative.

The single-story bungalow with a large attic was constructed for Charles and Alice Wagner, who arrived here from Pennsylvania in 1904. Both Charles and Alice were photographers, and they set up a studio in their home.

Charles became famous around town for capturing the glory of giant redwood trees. He also used the exterior of their stone house as an interesting backdrop for some group photos. Alice hand colored his images using oil paints, and the couple’s work was often displayed in local shop windows.

On Nov. 11, 1920, Los Gatos held a big celebration on the first anniversary of Armistice Day (now known as Veteran’s Day), the date the Treaty of Versailles was signed ending World War I. The town welcomed home 260 servicemen with a barbecue, dancing and outdoor games. Charles Wagner had the honor of winning first place in the “Fat Men’s 50-Yard Dash.” Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), no photograph exists of that event.

In 1930-31, the house was purchased by Jacques and Therese Libante, natives of France who emigrated to San Francisco. Like so many city residents who became tired of the cold and fog,

the Libantes moved to Los Gatos for the favorable climate. They thought it would be especially helpful for their son Andre, who suffered from asthma.

The Libantes had experience in the laundry industry in San Francisco. They opened a shop on East Main Street in Los Gatos and quickly built a reputation for their painstaking work cleaning lace and fine fabrics. Their business grew, and in 1934 they moved it into a beautifully designed Art Deco building, which they constructed in the garden adjacent to their home. It featured large picture windows so they could display their work. Jacques had a custom starch formula for the shirts of each of his gentlemen clients. They purchased a truck so their hand-laundered and carefully-pressed goods could be delivered to Los Gatos homes.

Therese Libante is remembered for having a beautiful rose garden which she tended when she wasn’t busy iron-

ing. She was careful to wear bloomers under her skirt when working on her roses, and she reportedly didn’t mind being teased about these colorful fabrics coming into view when she bent over to prune her prized flowers.

Jacques, who was 24 years older than Therese, passed away in 1960. Therese was listed as the homeowner in 1991 in the Town’s application for a National Register of Historic Places designation. She died five years later. The Stone House is still owned by the Libante family, although it is no longer occupied as a full-time residence.

TOP-TIER COLLECTIONS DEBUTED

Fashion, from page 1

through constructions of tan corduroy, jacquard ribbon and rib knit fabric that blended a groovy 70s vibe with European traditions.

Elizabeth Clar, of Vintage Fusion Jewelry, contributed items for the collection, resulting in a pleasant harmony of waist chains and innovative crown elements. “I created a belt and two headpieces for her collection which featured a lot of pompoms,” Clar explained. “It's just been an amazing experience.”

Robertson’s most remarkable ensemble—a baby-pink ribbed knit teddy, with its high-neck and jacquard ribbon wrapping around the model like a garter—was the core of a look that served as an ode to tracing the contours of ultra femininity and the innate sexuality of the modern woman. A cropped jacket apparently made entirely of spherical tufts in his theme's colors (green, pink, red and tan) was layered on top.

The silhouette recalled the May Queen Dress designed by Andrea

Flesch for the A24 film “Midsommar.”

A large gathering of multicolor flowers around a doomed Florence Pugh. But of course, Robertson's understated counterpart lacked the threatening and murderous undertones of the movie’s floral mound.

Separately, the elements could be considered innocent. But together—and styled in such a sensual manner—Robertson delivered a commentary on self-assurance. “I'm definitely playing on femininity and sexuality; but also, if you wear the jacket, it's like armor,” Robertson said. “I wanted to play on the confident, strong woman.”

Tweedy and Earthy

Nods to modern femininity were woven through the show. A tweed coat by Surayya Modhaddam embodied the essence of timeless sophistication in a blend of silver, tan and dark blue. A structured coat exuded the elegance of 1960s womenswear. But the mesh pockets and breast overlays gave it

A silk jogger embellished with a side stripe and red lining, was coupled with a matching jacket. Its opaque bodice contrasted with mesh sleeves. When shed, it revealed its true form: a sleek, thin-strapped jumpsuit with detailed beading.

San Juan imagined a powerful woman in his collection, his nod to sultry prevalence and purpose. “She’s not afraid to show her sensuality with the toughness, while being a woman in America,” San Juan said.

High Fashion is Not a Crime

Joshua Cruz, a designer who goes by the brand name Public Crimes, authored one of the highest-fashion chapters of the night. For example, a sleeveless black trench coat, with its shapeless silhouette and raw hems, allowed for plenty of movement, conferring an air of nonchalance.

Then, a cowl neck reptilian gown commanded attention. It draped along the body, evoking the sophistication of a professional exhibition, akin to Porterville, California-native Rick Owens’ powerful aesthetic.

A two-toned gown captivated with

a modern update, while still paying homage to Chanel's wool cloth legacy.

Eliot Brammer unveiled a captivating earth-toned collection sprouting with florals that embraced innovative layering techniques. Among the highlights was a striking emerald jumpsuit with pleated silk sleeves. These began bubbling in sections down the expanse of the arm and flowed into open panels. But what made this piece unique was its versatility—courtesy of removable bands (as demonstrated by the model).

Jonathan San Juan arrived in a moodier light. The returning alumni’s attention to detail displayed his recent growth beyond the walls of the school. Black and red, the colors of his theme were powerful and sultry. His opening look, a black high-leg bodysuit featuring a plunging neckline was complemented by the vibrance of red-mesh peasant sleeves. It was paired with a twotiered, floor-length skirt, cinched at the waist with a sizable panel left open to offer a leggy exhibition.

its contrasting elements: a snakeskin bodice featuring sultry cutouts at the hips, seamlessly transitioning into a lengthy skirt, complete with a side train, showcasing a blend of textures in a contemporary take on classic glamor.

Notable splashes included pieces by graduating students Kayal Muthukumar and Narges Jamshidi. Muthukumar displayed her proficiency with heat transfers on unconventional fabrics. The assemblage of bright pinks, blues and greens shone through thanks in large part to lip decals. Jamshidi presented a black and white closet, referencing 20s slip dresses and silk paneling of nightwear past. A chevron-constructed dress and lacey pieces with silk counterparts were the epitome of classic.

The looks showcased throughout the evening, which was organized in partnership with Content Magazine, represented just a sampling of the sartorial ideas bubbling up from West Valley College’s fashion department. The program appears to have a bright future, and will no doubt bring more top fashion minds to the forefront in the years to come.

BANKS OF LEXINGTON RESERVOIR SCOURED

200+ pounds haul included car headlights, bottles and Styrofoam

As avid rowers of the Los Gatos Rowing Club, we frequently encounter trash floating in the Lexington Reservoir during our practices. The scope of this problem is alarming. Every year, the San Francisco Bay is overwhelmed by a staggering 7 trillion pieces of microplastics, equating to roughly a million pieces per resident, according to the San Francisco Estuary Institute. This alarming influx is primarily due to urban runoff, which poses severe threats to marine life and the broader ecosystem. Determined to help address this issue, we worked with the Creek Connections Action Group and Valley Water to gather the community to help preserve the pristine beauty of our local waters.

On National River Cleanup Day, May 18, we worked to clean the Lexington Reservoir area with a dedicated team of 24 volunteers, including students from The Harker School, Fischer Middle School, Rolling Hills Middle School, Bellarmine College Preparatory, Valley Christian School and Los Gatos High School. Volunteers were also members of the Los Gatos Rowing Club and Scouts Troop 339; and we worked alongside adult advocates. It was heartening to see people of all ages uniting for the common cause of environmental preservation.

Starting along the reservoir banks, we quickly spotted pollutants such as cans and bottles. A closer inspection revealed tiny, colorful plastics scattered across the embankment. Knowing that microplastics are the silent killers of ecosystems, which pose choking hazards to wildlife, we meticulously removed these harmful materials.

We also began to come across numerous bits of plastic foam, which we tracked back to a primary source: five large, three-foot-tall blocks of Styro-

foam. This petroleum-based material is particularly harmful, because it doesn’t biodegrade and its form allows it to float on water surfaces, endangering marine life

Finally, to celebrate our hard work, we enjoyed a rock-skipping competition, taking in the beauty of the newly-cleaned scenery. By the end of the day, our efforts netted more than 200 pounds of trash, making the Lexington Reservoir cleaner and safer for everyone.

This was just one of 48 Valley Water and Creek Connections Action Group initiatives for National River Cleanup Day. Across the region, hundreds

of volunteers joined hands to protect our aquatic ecosystems. We invite everyone to sign-up for our next cleanup event on Coastal Cleanup Day, Sept. 21, when we will be returning to the Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos. By making a concerted effort to stop littering—and picking up trash when we see it—we can tackle the plastic pollution problem plaguing the San Francisco Bay Area.

DESTINATION MARKETING

Chamber of Commerce, from page 1

“We are planning to continue our multi-prong approach to destination marketing,” she said during the regularly scheduled meeting.

The program for the upcoming months includes social media managed by a dedicated employee; a print and digital destination guide; a You Belong in Los Gatos street pole banner series (in early summer); and the production and marketing of largescale events that entice visitors with unique experiences.

“Some of these major events include, notably, the VIP experience for our wine walks, which we launched last month, and holiday cable carstyle trolleys and Santa visits,” Lin said during public comment. “We have added, this past year, the kid and pet Halloween Paw-Looza, and a Valentine’s-themed sweethearts stroll.”

Vice Mayor Matthew Hudes brought up the possibility of selling Los Gatos as a place where people can host weddings and other multi-day ceremonies.

“We do think there’s definitely opportunity there,” Lin said. “And we think there’s other ways to draw in visitors for overnight.”

“We might be the ideal spot,” she said, explaining that adding a VIP tier to events can mean overnight stays make more sense.

Councilmember Maria Ristow asked what the Chamber would cancel if it dropped back down to the $55,000 funding level from the year before last.

Lin said the board has already been discussing this.

“If it was dropped down to $55,000, I think what we would do is cease to operate the physical Visitor Center and want to give that back to the Town,” she said.

Hudes made a motion to assign the Chamber $88,000 “with the intention to fund it from TOT in excess over the current budget,” but he said this includes the working to make Los Gatos more of a destination for weddings and other celebrations, as well as for wine-drinkers and VIPs.

The motion passed unanimously.
