CHARLEY’S LG PLANS TO CLOSE, RETIRE 52-YEAR TOWN LEGACY

Storied venue sold and will hold its final bash

On a Thursday night, DJ MARSHiANN bounced around Charley LG’s plush second-story dancefloor, checking on attendees, as NAPA spun energetic electronic music. It wasn’t long before Brendan Sherry, one of the members of Where You At?, hopped behind the decks to deliver a slew of fresh-sounding beats, going back-to-back with other youthful DJs.

As the powerful and crisp sound wafted-out along a mostly-quiet North Santa Cruz Avenue, toward the bluegrass show at a Main Street coffee shop, preparations were underway for the bar’s future.

After about two-and-ahalf years, Alex Hult, CEO of Flights Restaurant Group Inc., has decided to sell the space, which came with plenty of lore and baggage.

The venue was previously the home of Mountain Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon, which was founded by Jim Farwell and Jack McNamara in 1972. Farwell, a decorated Vietnam veteran and founding

Wildcats sweep Los Altos to capture ‘A’ league title

Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor Three teams Los Gatos, Los Altos and Palo Alto entered

the final day of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division season with an opportunity to share or win an outright championship.

In the end, it was the Wildcats standing alone at the top after they beat Los Altos 7-3 on

May 10, clinching their second consecutive ‘A’ league title.

“Happy to win back-to-back championships in this league, which is really tough,” Los Gatos coach Mike Minkel said.

FORMER CHAMBER EXEC REINVENTS AS FLORAL SHOP OPERATOR

Centerpiece Flowers sets tone with dahlias, roses, peonies and carnations

Flowers, like music, are a universal language. No matter what the occasion, there’s a flower for it. Sometimes, it might be something you’ve never heard of—say, a reticulated ranunculus. Or, perhaps a rose peony in bright watermelon pink (arguably the most flirty of the petticoat-wearing plants).

Catherine Somers, owner of Los Gatos-based Centerpiece Flowers, located near Trent Pottery and Oy! Bakery (which used to be the first home of Manresa Bread in Los Gatos), makes it her business to source unusual flowers. She’s not sharing any secrets, but her previous career in the floral industry (she worked at Boston-based Winston Flowers for years, before her husband’s job transferred the family to Seattle), has set her up with some excellent connections.

Somers, a familiar face to residents, having served as the executive director of the Los Gatos Chamber for eight years, is still a fierce champion for small businesses. Keeping the Chamber properly funded is critical to promoting the town’s economy. “These small businesses are the lifeblood of the town,” she says. “They’re what brings people here.”

Somers has an eye for beauty and balance, and always makes flowers the star of the show. With apologies to Trader Joe’s, her selection goes well beyond theirs. Plus, you can’t get prom staples at TJ’s.

“We’re right in the middle of prom and graduation season,” Somers says, while tying a soft green ribbon around a few stems of peony roses, with which I’ve been smitten. “Plus, weddings, and anniversaries—it’s that time of year. We’re getting orders for corsages, boutonnières and posies for brides. I love how wrist corsages are so popular again, and posies are so sweet.”

Did you know that the tradition of a corsage for prom comes from an early 20th century (yikes, that seems so long ago now) custom of men bringing a bouquet to their date’s parents, from which a single bloom would be pinned on their date’s dress? Corsages are also popular hair adornments and can be pinned to the waist of a dress.

It all depends on the dress, but wrist corsages are the most flexible.

Boutonnières have gone beyond carnations and roses to gardenias and cosmos, and 2024 wedding trends are towards brighter and more vibrant, with oranges, fuchsias and unusual greenery as accents. Dahlias, roses, peonies and carnatio ns are the floral core, but hydrangea, gerberas, anthuriums, and chrysanthemums are also in. Long stems like snapdragons and larkspur—plus long-lasting lisianthus and delphiniums—add drama.

There’s a growing movement towards more natural looking arrangements: bouquets that look like they came straight out of a backyard garden in the countryside.

“Flower crowns are part of that natural, back-to-the-earth movement,” says Somers. “I’m getting requests for those, too.”

If you’re looking for a sensational one-of-a-kind centerpiece arrangement, give her a day’s notice, and she can put something together. “Many people bring in their own vase, which is great, but I also have lots of options to choose from,” she says, pointing to the shelves, stocked with containers of

various shapes.

She loves the simplicity of Ball jars, something that fits the ethos of other shoppers who have donated several to her collection.

“I love upcycling,” she says, as she pulls a map of California out of her utility container, stuffed with scissors and floral tape, ribbons, wire, pens and twine. “Why not use them for wrapping flowers?” The familiar outlines of Lake Tahoe become the backdrop for my pink peony roses.

Somers then pushes a small wooden box filled with small cards on a heavy stock in my direction, inviting me to browse. “My husband gave me these ages ago, when I was thinking about opening my own floral shop,” she says. “Although I didn’t get to fulfill that dream back then, I thought these were fun and hung onto them. I tell people to channel the person they are buying flowers for, and then pick something out of the box.” Almost every time, she says, there’s a powerful connection with the subject matter.

It's a bit like tarot card reading, or fortune cookie hunting. Some are humorous, some quizzical. Most are downright poignant. “People have really strong

emotional reactions when they read the sentiments,” Somers notes. “That’s just such a beautiful thing.”

I select one at random: “There are many things in life that will catch your eye: but only a few will catch your heart. Pursue those.”

Centerpiece Flowers is at 242 N. Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos, CA, 95030. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9am until 5:30pm. Follow her @centerpieceflowerslg handle on Instagram to stay florally inspired.

BILLER DELIVERS CLUTCH PERFORMANCE TO KEEP LG AHEAD

Baseball from page 1

“Winning a league championship is one thing, being able to do it back-toback is pretty special.”

Pitcher Anthony Andrews, who helped key the victory with 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief, echoed Minkel’s comments.

“Winning this league obviously is not a small feat,” Andrews said. “This team has always had the talent, but it was about putting it all together and I think this kind of solidifies our spot as one of the best Los Gatos teams to ever do it.”

The Wildcats (23-4) earned an automatic spot in the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs, meaning they’ll be in a stacked eight-team field with the section’s five other ‘A’ league champions and two other squads, most likely the second- and thirdplace finishers from the powerful West Catholic Athletic League (the brackets were released after this edition went to press). The postseason starts with opening-round games on May 18.

Minkel is confident the team is prepared to make a deep playoff push after going 11-3 through a grueling league schedule. This year’s battle for the De Anza Division crown was one of the closest in the last decade.

The Wildcats entered the final week of league play needing to sweep their two-game set with Los Altos to have a shot at the league championship. A 2-1 win over Los Altos on May 9 set up a monumental final day of the league season, as Los Gatos, Los Altos and Palo Alto all had 10-3 league marks.

Los Gatos completed the sweep but also needed Wilcox to beat Palo Alto on the final day to win the title outright. And that’s exactly what transpired, with Wilcox defeating Palo Alto, 3-1. In the title-clinching game, Andrews was magnificent in his longest relief outing of the season.

The team’s closer, Andrews felt strong enough to tell Minkel he was good to go the distance if called upon early.

“I’ve been mostly closing which has been one to two innings max (per outing), so coming in here and being able to throw four innings and being pretty dominant, I’m pretty happy with that,” Andrews said. “I had some velo(city) on my fastball, so it helps being able to play off that with my secondary pitch-

es. And I can’t go without mentioning my defense. It’s always a good feeling being able to trust your defense.”

Minkel praised starter AJ Minyard and Andrews for their performances throughout the season. Minyard allowed seven hits and lasted 2 2/3 innings, one of his shortest outings of the season. However, Minyard has been consistently excellent, posting quality start after quality start.

“AJ has had an unbelievable year,” Minkel said. “This was kind of an anomaly for him. He’s been a biggame guy for us. He didn’t have his best stuff today, and that’s OK for us because we have guys this year who can back behind him, essentially, and carry us the rest of the way.”

Case in point, Andrews.

“Unbelievable job by Tony to come in, shut it down and not give them any momentum offensively because

that’s a really good offensive club right there,” Minkel said.

Los Gatos won the first game against Los Altos when Santino Nanez hit a ground ball fielder’s choice that the Eagles misplayed, allowing the tying and winning runs to score with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ethan Williams (10-1) delivered another superb start, putting the team in position to win in riveting fashion. In the second game between the schools, the Wildcats never trailed, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

They manufactured the three runs on one hit, two walks, two hit by pitches and a sacrifice-fly. AJ Ljepava singled with one out and Carter Johnstone followed with a walk. After Brady Simon was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Donovan Freed walked to drive in a run.

Brayden Smith was hit by a pitch to

make it 2-0, and Sage Romero drove in the third run with a sac-fly to left field. Los Altos scored a run in the bottom of the first and threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the third.

That’s when Los Gatos left fielder Zach Biller made one of the key plays of the game, gunning down a Los Altos runner at home plate to keep the Wildcats ahead, 3-2. Even though the Eagles’ Kai MacQuiddy stroked an RBI single to make it 3-3 moments later, Biller’s play prevented a potentially bigger inning.

“Fantastic job by Zach to make that throw and keep it a one-run game at the time,” Minkel said. “And great job by our catcher Rowen (Smith) to receive that ball and make the tag. Great play all around, big-time play.”

Johnstone went 2-for-3, including a two-run triple that made it 6-3 with no out in the top of the seventh inning.

VOLUNTEERS GATHER FOR LOS GATOS CREEK TRAIL CLEAN-UP

Kiwanis recent award luncheon highlighted deserving locals

On Saturday morning, Los Gatos Kiwanis boardmember Nancy Pearson arrived at Old Forbes Mill with coffee and donuts in-hand, prepared to guide members of the Los Gatos High School Key Club, and other volunteers, on an environmental spruce-up.

While embarking on this green clean, Pearson shared about other Kiwanis activities, including the Special Games held at West Valley College.

Another was the luncheon at Double D’s Bar and Grille, where the club honored local seniors who’ve pushed through adversity, bringing-up their grades to graduate in the process. Now in its 26th year, the group handed-out $25,500 in scholarships via this initiative.

This was emceed by Mike Wasserman, who’s been on board for more than two decades. Attendees included the mayors of Los Gatos and Saratoga, Town Manager Laurel Prevetti, school officials, teachers, counselors and, of course, club members—as well as awardees and their families.

On Saturday, Marian Stewart joined the rest of the clean-up army, all eager to get moving.

Stewart, who recently retired, had been looking for a community cause to participate in.

"I wanted to volunteer,” she said. “I had been always volunteering for the 4 years before while I was still working. It had ran its course, and I knew for sure that I wanted to do more once I retired as I would have more time.”

She explained her parents had been part of the Italian Catholic Federation and used to feed the homeless at the club near the University of Santa Clara.

“So, I volunteered there feeding the homeless for five years, in the place where they held the meetings,” she said.

Pearson noted how the Live Oak Nutrition Center has outreach programs, too.

"They do everything," she said. "Just like our local churches.”

Just then, Shane Garrison showed up.

"Nice to meet you," he said, politely.

Next, Mert Hamsioglu arrived.

"Honestly, it is kinda a community here, we are now all like friends, basically brothers,” Hamsioglu said. "One of my friends was in Key Club and he was telling me that he had so much fun—as he was in it from his freshman year."

Hamsioglu joined midway through junior year.

"We also helped this year at the Special Games, held at West Valley (College)," he said.

Just then Taylor Hager, a recent LGHS grad and former Key Club member, and her brother Bradley arrived.

"Everyone is just like a friend to me here and spending some good time with them is great," Bradley, a sophomore, said.

“Bradley is new and just incoming,” Pearson added. "They all do so much.”

Then, it was down to the business at hand—cleaning the Los Gatos Creek Trail.

The most interesting trash ever picked-up? Everyone agreed it was the suitcase full of strange documents, which they turned over to the police.

Ad LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

I'm writing to share my personal opinion (and not speaking in my role as a Planning Commissioner). It looks like you got your facts wrong in the May 7 edition of the Los Gatan. Throwing Mary Badame and Matthew Hudes under the bus is without merit. On March 4, our Housing Element reviewer from the Department of Housing and Community Development gave an OK for protecting six areas in Los Gatos from upzoning. The next day, it was the other three Council members who voted to reduce that to three.

In fact, this group of three Council members (in particular Rob Moore and Maria Ristow) has been pushing for more housing from the start. Look at their voting records. There will be more important votes affecting our town coming up. Get involved.

Dear Editor,

A heartfelt thank you to the Town of Los Gatos for supporting the "Los Gatos, My Home" public art contest organized by Omniware Networks.

The contest received many responses, with diverse submissions that captured the unique charm of Los Gatos. Each piece captured its unique spirit, reminding us all why we cherish this place. Special recognition goes to the esteemed panel of judges for their meticulous selection process.

Thank you to all involved for your advice and making this event such a success: Kyrsten Gustaveson, Marsha Thomas, Los Gatos Library, Saratoga Art Show, Chamber of Commerce, Pacific Fine Arts and many community volunteers.

MOUNTAIN CHARLEY’S ENDS HALF-CENTURY RUN NEARLY 200 YEARS AFTER NAMESAKE’S BIRTH

Charley’s Sold, from page 1

member of Santa Clara University’s rowing team, was the great-grandson of founding Los Gatos settler James Lyndon. The saloon was named after Irish mountain man Charles McKiernan, who was born almost 200 years ago and famously mauled by a bear in the 1850s.

Farwell died at age 48 in 1992 of pancreatic cancer. His wife, Sue Farwell, partnered with Los Gatos bartender Mark Achilli to continue the business.

In 2008, after selling the business to Esequiel “Paul” Garcia, Achilli was killed outside his Los Gatos townhome in a murder-for-hire that shocked the town.

In December 2016, a jury awarded $45.1 million in damages to Achilli’s

daughter, Alexandra.

She told the Los Gatan her dad was murdered by Esequiel “Paul” Garcia, to whom Achilli had sold the saloon, along with 180 Restaurant and Lounge.

No payments on the damage award (which was reduced to $20.1 million on appeal) to Alexandra Achilli have been made, according to attorney Robert Bohn Jr. “It’s essentially uncollectable,” he said.

Garcia was imprisoned for life, with no chance of parole.

Venue’s

Fresh Starts

In 2021, San Francisco DJ Donovan Friedman and professional hockey player turned restaurateur Hult partnered to launch a dinner theater concept, called Immersive: Los Gatos, at

On Feb. 14 of this year, lawyer Neil Chan established DJJ LG15 LLC, which appeared on a change of ownership notice posted on the Charley’s LG door.

Hult’s team plans an all-day bash on Sunday, June 2, where musicians who’ve graced their stage can play one final time, before it shifts into its cocoon.

the location, featuring spooky drinks, sword-swallowing and aerial dance.

“We’re tapping into something that nobody’s doing down here right now,” Friedman told the Los Gatan at the time.

The quality of the production did match what you might expect to see in Hollywood or New York.

Around that time, an avid disability-lawsuit-filer swept through town and hit Hult’s Flights restaurant a few blocks away. He chose to let that location go to focus on growing his dining empire elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the partnership between Friedman and Hult didn’t play-out as hoped, and Hult opened the re-branded “Charley’s LG” as a still-ornate but pared-down bar to a full house on Feb. 26, 2022.

“Charley’s name will go away, the venue will look completely different, and for many a lot of memories will be lost,” said longtime valley nightspot operator Chuck Oliver on Facebook. “We are excited for a new business coming into Los Gatos and fully supporting them.”

Charley’s general manager Pam Davis told the Los Gatan that despite ups and downs, the bar was doing well.

“We were hitting all of our goals that we wanted to hit,” she said. “We did not have Charley’s up for sale.”

When an ownership group with connections to Los Gatos made an offer, however, Hult—who has two kids and a baby on the way—went for it, Davis said, declining to reveal the price.

The buyers started making overtures around September, and the transaction was completed in April.

Davis adds that, now, Hult can focus more of his energy on the restaurant-focused AI startup he’s developing.

ENDANGERMENT

AFTER DRUG BUST

Officers said they found 25,000 fentanyl pills underneath baby’s crib

Staff Report

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced May 9 a San Jose couple had been charged with three counts of possessing narcotics for sale, one count of child endangerment and unlawful possession of a firearm.

This followed a drug task force raid that uncovered 25,000 fentanyl pills in a backpack stashed under their baby’s crib—one of its largest seizures of the deadly opioid ever.

Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team investigators also found 13 pounds of marijuana, 1.5 pounds of cocaine, a loaded firearm, two digital scales and almost $4,000 in cash.

Octavian Moreno, 27, and Krystal Delgado, 23, have been charged with five felony counts and face a maximum term of 18 years in prison and 13 years, respectively.

District Attorney Jeff Rosen said he was determined to hold the defendants responsible for their crimes.

“This is a county where fentanyl and the callous disregard for its lethality took the lives of two small children—baby Phoenix and baby Winter,” he said in a release. “I had hoped that their short lives had gained some meaning as a warning to all parents. I am relieved today that we have not added another name to that tragic list.”

On May 7, SCCSET executed a search warrant on the couple’s apartment that yielded 6,000 grams (13 pounds) of fentanyl in pill form, authorities said, adding the pills were in plastic bags with “10k” labeled on them.

Officers say they found the couple’s one-year-old baby playing in his playpen a few feet away from a bag of marijuana. Over in the kitchen cabinet—right next to some baby formula— investigators found cocaine, while an illegal firearm was in an unlocked drawer nearby, according to the DA’s Office.
