It’s only been a few weeks since District 2 County Supervisor Anthony Botelho announced he’ll retire at the end of his term in 2020. Three candidates wasted no time in announcing they were running for Botelho’s open seat; Wayne Norton, Valerie Egland and Kollin Kosmicki. Botelho is retiring after 16 years as a supervisor of the district that covers Aromas, San Juan Bautista and the San Juan valley. The Free Lance spoke with each of the candidates about their campaigns, why they’re running for supervisor and what they think needs to be changed in San Benito County.

The 650 members of the San Benito High School graduating class of 2019 were awarded their high
school diplomas under sunshine and warm temperatures during a picturesque day in Hollister. “I was very impressed with our 2019 graduates. We had amazing singers and articulate student speakers,” said Board President Steve Delay, who was front and center
with his board colleagues for Friday’s graduation festivities. “I expect there will be some incredible accomplishments from these students.” The newest SBHS grads will soon head off to various post-secondary paths from junior college to fouryear universities to trade
schools, with others entering into job apprenticeships and other endeavors. Jaron Cota (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Frederick Keith (UCLA) were co-valedictorians for the Class of 2019, while Stanfordbound Ian Sills was the 2019 class salutatorian.

Council takes fights to Facebook SOME COUNCIL SPEAKERS URGE SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY Jaqueline McCool Reporter
Visitors to recent Hollister City Council meetings have likely seen increasing tension between council members boil over into shouting matches. The
most recent flashpoint was the hearing of an appeal by Mayor Ignacio Velazquez on a council downtown development decision. The council conflicts have gone beyond council chambers, spilling over onto the pages of Facebook. Complaints and questions about the growing social media presence of Velazquez and
District 2 Councilmember Rolan Resendiz were raised multiple times by their council opponents and some members of the audience at the June 3 council meeting. Resendiz and Velazquez are active on Facebook and within public Facebook groups on the online platform. Velazquez hosts monthly town halls on Facebook
Live on the first Sunday of each month. Velazquez often reaches out to the public from his “Hollister Mayor-Ignacio Velazquez” account. While most council members frequently take to Facebook to share personal information, they have also used it as a way to voice political concerns or gauge public interest. Council members Honor
Spencer and Marty Richman also have Facebook accounts, both of which are private. Richman has an account that was used for his 2018 campaign, but no posts have been made since 2018 shortly after the election. Some Hollister residents urged city staff at the June 3 meeting to ➝ Social media, 4

for the Aromas water district and chair of the county’s committee on aging. He also is a delegate to the state Democratic Party convention. Norton said that while Botelho is leaving big shoes to fill, he believes he can step into them. “I think I have his combination of leadership and competence,” said Norton. The three issues Norton said San Benito County is facing are local jobs, housing and transportation. He said these issues are connected and that the other candidates would likely have the same platform, adding that he wants to focus on “good governance” if elected. Norton said he admired the way Botelho was able to work with people of different parties and beliefs as supervisor and that he would like to continue that if elected. He pointed to the tension among Hollister City Council members and said the county needs a supervisor who can work with everyone. He also believes his time as a government reporter make him uniquely capable of being supervisor. “I’ve seen the government firsthand; I know how it works,” said Norton. “I see how [elected officials] should and can work together.”

Valerie Egland involved in county politics, including time on the pedestrian commission, the parks and recreation committee and the county planning commission. “My mantra is ‘from the Pajaro to the Pinnacles’,” Egland told the Free Lance, adding that her platform emphasizes “work, wealth and wellness.” Egland says she wants to bring highpaying jobs to the county, fix roads and infrastructure and promote tourism in the county. A key part of Egland’s plan is to promote the use of county parks, as well as Pinnacles National Park, to generate tourism revenue for the county. She said she wants people to spend time in the county

after they’ve used the parks. Egland said she wants to explore creating a parks, library and cultural district similar to a hospital district or a school district. “You’ve got the hospital district, you’ve got the school district; you need something that’s going to pick up the vital need,” said Egland. “They’re all sitting there just waiting to come together.”

Kollin Kosmicki also is a former editor of the Free Lance and the founder and writer for San Benito Live, an online news site. He has been reporting on local politics for over a decade and says his time spent holding those in local
government accountable made him think about what he could bring to the table. Kosmicki has several detailed plans, said his three main focuses right now are housing, roads and economic development. He said roads would be his No. 1 budget priority and that he would like to see the budget for repairing potholes increase. In order to draw high-tech business to the county to cut down on commute times for residents, Kosmicki said he wants to divert funding to pay for an economic development director for the county. He said he’d also like to “roll out the welcome mat” for businesses, and part of
that would be expanding broadband infrastructure so businesses would be more enticed to move to the county. Kosmicki also said he’s like to capitalize on the Pinnacles National Park and the wineries in the area by working with the Chamber of Commerce to generate more tourism to the county. When it comes to housing, Kosmicki said he wants to gain more control of development by taking a closer look at the development of single-family homes in the area. “I’m in favor of more controls on housing so we can slow down the growth a little bit here,” said Kosmick. “I feel like that’s been ignored.” He said he’d like to get rid of in-lieu fees for developments that make it easier for them to build and require more projects to complete environmental impact studies. Some of the other ideas Kosmicki is exploring include moving the county toward an all-electric vehicle fleet and building a new library. He said he would like to use some of the county’s reserve funding to help kickstart big projects. Kosmicki said he plans to sell San Benito Live or narrow its focus significantly if he’s elected. During the campaign, he said he has suspended all coverage of county government and politics for San Benito Live.

example from social media guidelines in King County requires employees using Twitter to write, “These tweets are my own.” While Hollister’s city council has rules of decorum outlined in the municipal code, there is nothing that explicitly deals with the use of social media. “If you’re acting as a City of Hollister representative, then there’s probably some legal rules,” Avera said. He told the Free Lance that if different council members were to comment on one Facebook post, it could violate the Brown Act. He added that council members’ posts and messages on official pages could be subject to public records requests. Avera said those kind of rules are outlined, but there are no rules about how council members should conduct themselves online. Brown Act violations occur when a majority of
initiate a social media code of conduct for the council. The Free Lance took its own poll on Facebook and asked residents if they believed a social media policy should be put in place. Of 66 respondents, 50 favored a policy and 16 did not. City manager Bill Avera told the Free Lance that creating a social media policy for the council was a possibility if a few council members directed staff to do so. He said that he would not bring a policy like that to the council unless asked to do so. Some California municipalities have social media policies for government employees. Many of the rules require disclaimers about opinions expressed on the account that mention the account is separate from that employee’s government duties. An
the council is having a private discussion, which in Hollister’s case would be three or more members. Discussions can be through any medium: online, in person or via email. Many of the comments made on Facebook by council members spill over into meetings, especially regarding the 400 block. There are pages on Facebook dedicated to opposing and approving the project; Velazquez and Resendiz are both administrators on the Facebook group “Save our 400 block.” Following the council’s decision to deny the appeal of the planning commission’s decision to approve the 400 block tentative map, Velazquez took to his Facebook group, where he reposted articles and detailed his argument against the development. Resendiz commented on several of the posts. When Velazquez is
posting on the page, he posts from his Facebook account, “Hollister MayorIgnacio Velazquez.” He is also an administrator for the group via his private Facebook page. Velazquez told the Free Lance that he uses Facebook because it’s “the most popular locally.” He said using the mayoral account to post is not a conflict of interest or ethics violation because people know he is mayor whether or not his account says so. Speaking on social media is his First Amendment right, said the mayor. “Outside of the city [council] chambers, I’m free to speak my mind on issues,” Velazquez told the Free Lance. Otherwise, he added, “It would be infringing our rights of free speech.” On June 8, Velazquez engaged with several constituents in the comment
section of the Hollister Free Lance article about the 400 block appeal. In a response to a commenter, Velazquez called the project “the biggest scam of the people that I have seen in a long time.” He posted the comment from the “Hollister Mayor-Ignacio Velazquez” account. Council member Carol Lenoir spoke at the June 3 council meeting about how she does not use social media after Velazquez’s lawyers alleged council members Marty Richman and Carol Lenoir had a conflict of interest when it came to hearing the appeal. Attached in documents filed in the appeal by Velazquez’s lawyers were comments Lenoir had made on a BenitoLink article describing the 400 block project. Lenoir was expressing her support for the project, and at the time the comment was posted, she

was a city planning commissioner who had not yet been appointed to the council. Velazquez’s lawyers said this expression of bias prior to the 400 block appeal would taint Lenoir’s decision. Lenoir refused to be interviewed. The attorney acting on behalf of the city in all matters relating to the 400 block, Lauren Layne of the Fresno law firm of Baker, Manock and Jensen, said at the June 3 meeting that a personal expression about a project outside of city council chambers would not represent a conflict. Many of the speakers at the appeal hearing pointed out Resendiz’s comments on Facebook in opposition to the project. Avera said getting a social media code of conduct out of the current council would be “challenging.”

Before I begin, I’d like to give a quick shout out to Christina Applegate! Administration wanted me to speak here today, so here I am. Thank you for this opportunity and I am almost 100 percent sure you will regret it. But don’t get me wrong. I take my task today very seriously. When I got the call three weeks ago notifying me that I would be speaking here today, I decided to prepare with the same intensity that many of us have devoted to studying for an AP test. So late last night, I began. After drinking three cans of Monster, snorting tons of Adderall, and spending hours watching frozen TV dinner reviews, I finally opened my browser. However, with all this time that I had, I was able to reflect on my high school years, both the good and the bad. We have all come a long way since our first day of high school back in 2015, and America has, too. Many of us have forgotten that McDonald's announced all-day breakfast that year. That was something truly special. The transition from middle school to high school was an exciting, albeit intimidating process. Many adjustments had to be made. There were new classes, new teachers, new students, and not just one, but three whole new campuses to navigate. Many of us felt lost, uncomfortable even, but with a few growing pains, we were able to overcome those challenges and expectations. Some of us rely on our friends and families, and others teachers and faculty. Regardless of where we draw our support from, we all have one thing in common: We are San Benito High School graduates. Some people don’t view high school graduation as an accomplishment or something to be proud of. They scrutinize us for believing that we’re done learning. Well to that I say, “Quit being a hater and killing my vibe.” This is an incredible achievement for all of us, and it is something that we should take pride in. No man has put it into words better than moral philosopher and ethicist 17 Krieg in his absolute banger, “Love for My Haters,” where he eloquently presents a unique stance against his so-called “haters.” But I digress. This is not a time for publicizing mediocre Soundcloud rappers. No offense. No, I’m here today because believe it or not, I actually do have something real to tell you. We are all embarking on a new phase in our lives, and knowing if we’re up for it is scary. As our high school years are finally coming to a close, and college draws near, we are likely to experience a range of emotions: Exhaustion. It’s been a long year, hasn’t it? From college admissions and standardized testing to extracurriculars and class events, none of us ever really had a chance to catch our breath. Regrets. From ➝ Frederick Keith., 11

owdy y’all. Buenos días a todos. Here we are, celebrating the longest commitment any one of us has ever undertaken. Now it is time to start our new commitment: adulthood. There’s no one to hold our hands, no one to tell us what to do, no one to tell us how to live our lives. To some of us, we may see that as an absolute win. But to others, it may be hard to let go. Either way, we are the masters of our own destinies. We have the power to do anything we may choose, no matter how cheesy that may sound. The decisions we make our ours and our own. Some of us may be ambitious, waiting to finally bring our ideas into the world to change it forever. Others will live a happy satisfying life, with a family and children. And, of course, there are those in between. The greatest, and scariest, the thing is, there’s no one to tell us whether or not we made the right choice. That’s on us. Now, we have more opportunities than ever before. It is our responsibility to take as many opportunities as we can, since we are now entering the most exciting time of our life. That’s precisely why the learning cannot stop. High school is over, but by no means are we done learning. And Lastly, Mr. Johnson, one of the smartest faculty members on campus, alumnus of Berkeley (Again, go, Cardinals!), and after 37 years of dedication and instruction who has decided to retire, you will be missed. Lastly, to my classmates, I venture to say that we’ve accomplished quite a feat. And not only have we labored, studied, struggled and accomplished so much, but we have done it at a truly remarkable time. Never before have we seen the advent of such great technological change. Truly, the bond between Silicon Valley and our small rural city has never been closer. This year we achieved what some believed to be impossible. In years past whenever one would walk to class, they oh so courageously took the risk of embarking on a perilous crossing. No amount of social dilemmas or physical ailments compared with the struggle and fear of crossing the infamous Nash Road. Now after so many years and oh, so many thousands of casualties, the great divide between our school has been sealed off—Nash road has been closed! (And it didn’t even cost $5 billion in fencing). Current and former Balers, we may now walk from history to English without the fear of becoming history. Rejoice, Nash Road is closed! Yes, yes, the future of the school like the future of my fellow classmates is bright and full of opportunity. We are ready to challenge the presence of fake news and misinformation, so prepare for a surge in well educated young adults going to the polls in 2020. Our childhood paralleled the rise of the smartphone and social media. Thus we have developed a broad command over social media, which has allowed us to speak our minds instantaneously across thousands of miles. Where in years past, people were constrained by verbal communication, we all have the power to be rational, eloquent activists waiting to denounce instances of injustice across the world. Wherever life takes us, let us all take comfort in the fact that we hail from a special place. Whether your family has been here for generations or you moved here in the fourth grade like me, Hollister means home. We are about to embark on a monumental crossing. For some of us, we’ve spent our whole lives waiting to take these steps and know exactly what lies on the opposite side. For others, the crossing is not merely an intermediate step to a location, but instead a vehicle driven by chance and destiny which will open up the wonders of life regardless of life path. The time has come y’all. Like the gates between Matson and O’Donnel, the gates of high school have closed. It is safe to cross over. So go, go on and cross Nash road into your future! Thank you!

Panetta asks feds to drop plans to allow drilling PLAN WOULD OPEN PARTS OF COUNTY TO NEW OIL/GAS WELLS Staff Report
Congressmember Jimmy Panetta on June 7 called on the federal Bureau of Land Management to halt any plans to move forward with the proposal to open hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands and mineral estate in San Benito County and other areas along the central coast of California to new oil and gas drilling. Panetta, whose 20th District includes part of Gilroy and all of San Benito County, wrote to BLM Acting State Director Joe Stout and Central Coast Field Office (CCFO) Field Manager Ben Blom, citing concerns about the proposal’s impact on wildlife habitats and air and water quality. The Democratic congressman also stressed that the proposal stands in direct opposition to California’s efforts to develop a clean energy economy. “I request that you do not proceed with the CCFO proposal to open new lands for oil and gas leasing and development, ensuring the central coast of California can continue aggressively pursuing policies that

SBHS SCIENCE TEACHER/ COACH JOHNSON RETIRING AFTER THREE DECADES Staff report
A baker’s dozen of graduates participated in San Benito High School’s Adult Education commencement ceremony May 30 in the school library, recognizing adults who have worked throughout the year to complete their high school diploma credits. Thirty-one Adult Ed students earned their diplomas in 2018 and 2019, according to staff. SBHS Director of Educational Services Elaine Klauer offered opening remarks, and graduate Salvador Vaca spoke about the pride he felt completing his diploma requirements and setting an example for his children. SBHS Trustee John Corrigan, ELL instructional assistant Rafaela Espinoza and teacher Liz Pulcheon presented diplomas to the graduates. The Adult Education Program begins the first Tuesday and Thursday after Labor Day each year, offering adults looking to complete

Johnson retiring after 37 years
San Benito High School science teacher and coach Bill Johnson is retiring at the end of the 2018-19 school term, ending a 37-year tenure at his alma mater. Johnson, who graduated from SBHS in 1969 and played football for the University of California, Berkeley, started working at SBHS in 1982 as a science teacher and football coach. Johnson had done both at Gavilan College prior to working two years in Sacramento for the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
He started teaching four different classes (biology, plant science, algebra and pre-algebra) in three different classes. “They say you can do anything after your first year” teaching, Johnson said, noting that throughout the years he has taught physical education along with genetics, Advanced Placement biology and AP environmental science. Johnson said he has “loved making connections” with his students, “sharing life lessons, the wonder of science, especially biology,” and has “made some really good friends.” He said he particularly has enjoyed the relationships he has forged through the years with the students he has coached. At various times in his four decades on campus, Johnson has coached baseball, football, wrestling and boys’ and girls’ golf. Johnson was the defensive coordinator for Carey Laine’s 1984 and 1985 Central Coast Section football championship teams and was the head coach for the squad that earned the three-peat in 1986. Last year, Johnson was inducted into the Baler Education Foundation Hall of Fame.

Brush cleared by prescribed burn JUNE 11 FIRE TO REDUCE FIRE FUELS, IMPROVE WILDLIFE HABITAT Staff Report FIle Photo
The Bureau of Land Management Central Coast Field Office was set to burn roughly 30 acres of noxious grass and brush outside the entrance to the Clear Creek Management Area, approximately 60 miles south of Hollister in San Benito County, starting Tuesday, June 11. The BLM will conduct the prescribed burn— depending on weather and air quality conditions— in partnership with CAL FIRE. The burn will help reduce fuel available for wildland fire by eliminating invasive yellow star thistle, which in California can grow to shoulder height and form massive, briar patches, according to a BLM statement. The Central Coast Field Office received a grant from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to help pay for the prescribed burn as reducing noxious weeds helps rejuvenate native grasses, which may improve habitat for elk. There are three elk species in California: Rocky Mountain, Roosevelt and Tule. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation works to protect crucial elk winter and summer ranges, migration corridors, calving grounds and other areas vital to elk and other wildlife. The BLM uses an integrated weed management strategy, which includes herbicide application, sheep and goat grazing and prescribed fire to kill invasive weeds like Medusa head and yellow starthistle plants before they have a chance to set seed. Prescribed burns are used to help restore balance to the ecosystem. The exact timing of the prescribed burn will depend on temperature, wind and relative humidity, and is being conducted in close coordination with the Monterey Bay Air Resources District. Smoke may be visible to nearby rural landowners. Updated information will be provided on BLM California social media sites using #RxBurn. The National Interagency Fire Center predicts the likelihood for large wildland fires will be above normal this summer. An unusually wet winter has produced an abundant grass crop, which has already cured or dried out. These heavy fuel loads have a high potential for creating extreme wildland fire behavior. In the last decade, nearly 90 percent of wildland fires have been caused by humans. Individuals who spark wildfires, intentionally or
developed recreation site, or other designated areas. • No fireworks, including “safe and sane” fireworks. • No welding or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame. • No explosives. • No campfires, barbecues or open fires, except in a developed campground. Portable stoves with gas, jelled petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are authorized with a valid California campfire permit available free at all BLM, Forest Service and CAL FIRE offices or at www.preventwildfireca.org/Permits. Think back on when we started high school. We survived back then and we can survive now. Despite all of these emotions, the one that we will experience the most is excitement. Imagine all of the new possibilities and wealth of opportunity abundant in the world. All of it is for our taking. But in our quest for fulfillment and self-discovery is adversity, and with adversity comes failure. However, there is nothing inherently wrong with failure. Making mistakes and disappointing others is a part of success. Failure makes us stronger, helps us grow, and provides answers. As beneficial as it is, the reason it hurts so much is because of our own faults. Being San Benito High School graduates means our greatest liability is our need to
classes we never got to take, to people we wish we became friends with sooner, there will always be things we wish we did differently. Joy. From submitting that last final to getting the girl to say “Yes,” our hearts will feel full and liberated. Nostalgia. These four years sure did fly by didn’t they? As much as we’re looking forward to a new chapter, part of us probably wishes we could start over from the beginning. Anxiety. Once the end is finally here, that means whole new beginnings and that’s terrifying. Moving in to a new city where you don’t know anybody is scary, but there is solace in knowing that every other incoming freshman feels the same way too.

We must continue to learn in order to make the correct decisions for ourselves, to seize all of the opportunities possible, and to live as good of a life as possible. Learning is not a bad thing, it cannot hurt you, even though sometimes it might seem that way; it is not illegal to learn as much as possible. In fact, learning can only make you better, and it can only make our world better. If you couldn’t tell, the world is having trouble trying to contain the pesky human species. And, unfortunately, all of those humans don’t quite get along with each other. Through learning, we may have the solution to these problems, and I don’t know about you, but to me that is incredibly exciting. A 24-year-old Hollister woman was killed in a headon collision on Highway 25 in Hollister Sunday evening, and police arrested a man for drunk driving who was suspected of causing the accident.

About 5pm June 9, a Hollister police officer arrived at the scene of a head-on collision between a black Mercedes sedan and a black Nissan sedan on Highway 25 just south of San Felipe Road, reads a June 10 press release from the California Highway Patrol. As a result of the crash, the driver of the Nissan suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The San Benito County Sheriff 's Office, acting as the coroner's office, identified the woman as Ashley Marie Santiago, 24, of Hollister. The driver of the Mercedes, Ernesto Hernandez, 28, of San Jose, suffered major injuries and was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, police said. Hernandez is suspected of having been driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the collision. He was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, according to police. Hollister Police arrested three local men whom police called “gang associates” on suspicion of possession of a firearm after conducting a vehicle stop for a traffic violation, authorities reported. About 10:57pm June 1, a Hollister police officer was on patrol in the area of Highway 25 and Sunnyslope Road when he saw a vehicle make a
traffic violation, reads a June 7 press release. The officer stopped the vehicle and contacted all three occupants, who are “known gang associates,” according to police. The three occupants of the vehicle were identified as Francisco Silva, Jessie Flores and Jose Ceja. The officer found that Silva, who was driving, was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, police said. As officers continued to search the vehicle, they found a loaded handgun inside the car. The weapon was accessible to all three suspects. All three were arrested. Silva was booked on suspicion of

Amy Quinones’ college running career is not over yet. The former San Benito High standout has one more season of athletic eligibility left, and she plans on using it for the 2020 track and field season. The recent Sacramento State graduate will re-apply for a nursing graduate program next year and in the meantime take a couple of classes to fortify her resume and academic transcript while training for another track season. The thrill of earning her undergraduate degree in four years—”It went by so fast,” she said—made Quinones’ walk across the stage to grab her diploma that much more special. “It was surreal,” she said. “I was in disbelief in how I was already at this point, and it was a really cool experience because I had four of my track teammates right in line with me and we got the front row of the ceremony. To have a lot of family support there, my jaw kind of dropped as I crossed the stage because I could not believe I was already graduating.” Quinones has one more season of athletic eligibility remaining because she took a redshirt season during her freshman indoor track season and also got injured during the outdoor track season of her sophomore year. Quinones is coming off a tremendous season in cross country and track, establishing numerous personal-records (PRs) in both sports. During the cross country season, Quinones was the top Sacramento State finisher in
all six races, something she also accomplished in her sophomore and junior seasons. Her lone race victory—it’s ultra difficult to win at the Division I running level—came at the Fresno State Invitational when she covered the hilly 5k (3.1 miles) course in 18 minutes, 2 seconds. Quinones has a PR of 17:32 in the 5k and 20:26.1 in the 6k. “Going into Fresno I was able to put it all together,” she said. “With the years of experience I gained, maturing and the added confidence I had in myself, I was ready to run a great race because I also had a solid summer training period. My endurance and base was definitely strong. Winning that race was a really cool experience.” Quinones was running with her teammates until the final mile, when the Sacramento State coaches told her to go for it. At the time, Quinones was in third or fourth place, but it didn’t take long for her to unleash a superior kick down the long straightaway to the finish line. With around 150 meters left, Quinones took the lead and crossed the finish line first for a spectacular race win. “It was definitely a nice moment because we won the team title and individual title,” she said. “That really set the stage for the rest of the season.” On the track in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, Quinones was no less impressive. She nailed PRs in all of her events, going 2:08.54 in the 800, 4:23.99 in the 1500 and 17:20.24 in the 5000. Among those marks, Quinones felt most proud of her 1500 time because it continued to show progress after she went 4:51.87 during the indoor season at the University of Washington Invitational on Jan. 26, the first time she had gone sub 5 minutes in the metric mile. “I felt like that started my breakthrough because I had been
IN THE FAST LANE Former Balers standout Amy Quinones (center) recently completed a terrific season on the track, establishing personal-records in all of her events, including a time of 4:23.99 in the 1500-meter run. trying the majority of my career to get under the 5 minute mark,” she said. “All the work I’ve done in the past four years, it was like, ‘Alright, this was in the making and I knew I could do it and it finally came.’ It was really cool because after the race my teammates and coaches congratulated me because they knew it had been a big goal of mine for a long time.” Quinones also finished in second place in the 1500 during the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships, putting her on the podium. “It was really cool to reach each
of the goals I had set out at the beginning of the year,” she said. Quinones had some strong performances despite not being able to actually run for an entire month leading up regionals and the conference championships. She started developing lower back pain and had to cross train and use the ElliptiGo, a machine that combines the motion of an indoor elliptical trainer with the outdoor mobility of a traditional bicycle. Fortunately for Quinones, she had developed a big base by running 60-plus miles a week for months, so she
just needed to maintain her fitness and save her legs for the actual races. When Quinones toed the starting line for the NCAA Division I West Region Track and Field Championships on May 23, she had already received the news that she hadn’t gotten into her graduate school of choice, leaving open the possibility of her returning for one more season of competition. She’s already accomplished so much, and yet she’ll have one more season to leave a lasting mark in what has been a terrific college career.

ary Lou, 80, of Gilroy, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.
G
ene Bourdet, a native son of Hollister, died of natural causes on Friday, May 31st, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Roseville, CA. Born November 24, 1922, Gene grew up on Southside with brother Len and sister Janis. The family moved into town during Gene’s high school years where he made all league in both baseball and football. Gene attended junior college in Salinas for a short time before going to Oakland to work in the shipyards. In 1943 he was drafted into the military and was sent to Bozeman, MT for training. There he met his future wife, Eileen Olson. After the war, Gene returned to Bozeman, married Eileen, and finished his education at Montana State College while playing quarterback for the Bobcats. At this time, he and Eileen began a “team” of their own (5 children over the next 13 years). His career included coaching at the high school level in both Fairfield, MT and Livingston, MT followed by a return to his alma mater in Bozeman. There he assisted in coaching both track and football. In 1958, he was appointed athletic director and head of the department for health and physical education. In 1970, Gene moved back to California where he served as athletic director for the Fresno State Bulldogs (1971-1978) and then as athletic director for the San Diego Aztecs (19791983). A heart attack in 1982 prompted Gene to eventually leave athletics. He (with Eileen) made the full circle back to Hollister in 1985 where he worked for his childhood friend, Sonny Paullus, in his real estate company at Ridgemark. For the next 30 years (Eileen passed away in 2008) they enjoyed living near sister Janis Rose and nephew David Grimes (wife Colleen) in the close knit community of Gene’s hometown. As his health declined the difficult decision was made in2015 to move to the Roseville area and live with family. Gene was a Rotarian for 48 years and a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Church. He will be greatly missed. A service will be held at 10:30 AM on July 2nd at the Immaculate Conception Church in Tres Pinos, CA. Military honors and a reception will follow.
