Dozens of people gathered Oct. 5 for the official opening of River Parkway Road, otherwise known as the Nash Road Bypass. The bypass has been a highly anticipated project among city, county and San Benito High School officials. The Hollister City Council approved the plans in November 2016, citing safety concerns for students crossing the street to attend classes. Multiple city and county agencies were applauded for their cooperative efforts. San Benito County Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Jerry Muenzer hailed the project as an example of intergovernmental accomplishments. “A day like today shows how we can come together and get something done,”

Pick of the patch

For much of the country, the fall season means cooler weather, changing leaves and pumpkin spice. Where there is no cool weather to be had, we’ll settle for pumpkins— lots of them—in all shapes and sizes. And Hollister’s Swank Farms caters to the cause. Swank’s annual Fall Festival features a wide variety of attractions and activities, all themed on the harvest season—pig races, a bee garden, mazes both for children

and former children, a cow train, pumpkin slingshots and corn cannons. For families interested in a spooky Halloween experience, Swank farms upholds the feel of all Hallows Eve with its “Gorechard” attraction, a haunted tour through the farm’s cherry orchard. Its festival runs Thursdays through Sundays (plus Halloween, which is a Wednesday this year). Read more about local pumpkin farms in this week’s San Benito magazine.

Commercial pot ordinance coming to SBC NO RETAIL MARIJUANA BUSINESS WILL BE PERMITTED Bryce Stoepfel Reporter

The process of introducing commercial cannabis activities in unincorporated San Benito County is moving forward, if a bit slowly. But progress

is progress, and on Sept. 25 the San Benito County Board of Supervisors heard a presentation from Hdl Companies that laid out potential updates in policy along with an estimated final reading of legislation that will formally introduce commercial cannabis to the county on Nov. 20. David McPherson, a consultant for Hdl

Companies, said that on Oct. 17 changes to the plan will be submitted to the San Benito County Planning Commission. The program will continue to undergo revisions on Nov. 6, and come back for an expected final reading on Nov. 20. “We’re not reinventing the wheel,” McPherson said. “The rates provided are realistic, and

consistent with surrounding counties.” Measure C, while not setting the exact tax rate, established a range for commercial cannabis taxes. The tax per square foot for cultivators will be between $3 and $17, and gross receipt taxes on cultivators will be 2 percent to 4 percent on distributors, 2.5 percent to 4 percent on manufacturers,

and 2.5 percent to 5 percent on micro businesses. The City of Hollister currently charges $7 per square foot and has a 5 percent tax on gross receipts in manufacturing and retail. Anyone hoping for countywide dispensaries will be disappointed. Cannabis retail ➝ Cannabis, 15
