Council says no vote in Dist. 1 CITY COUNCIL DECIDES TO APPOINT A SUCCESSOR TO RAY FRIEND By Barry Holtzclaw Reporter

Robert Eliason

Would you like to be a City Council member, but avoid the time and expense of an election? The Hollister City Council has rejected an option of scheduling a special council election next spring, and instead is accepting applications for an appointment to the District 1 council seat left vacant by the resignation of Ray Friend. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 14. The council has tentatively scheduled interviews for prospective council candidates on Oct.1, when it also intends to make the appointment. By law, the city has to make its decision on an appointment before Oct. 7, 60 days after Friend’s resignation became effective. That’s one month before the mayoral position and the three other council member seats are up for grabs. Friend’s resignation came too late for his open seat to be included on the Nov. 6 ballot, according to the city. On Aug. 20, the council voted 3-1, with Mayor Ignacio Velazquez opposed, to appoint Friend’s successor, and not allow District 1 voters to pick his replacement.

From local bands and classic cars to yard sales and antiques, Aromas Day is a smalltown celebration offering a connected community feel that is distinctly American. This year’s Aromas Day celebration on Sunday, Aug. 26 was no different. Neighbors came out to celebrate their town and welcomed visitors from all over the tricounty area. The one-day festival included live music, great food, art in the park, classic cars, kids’ activities galore, yard sales everywhere and a serene and unpretentious community vibe.

Virus forces county website to go offline SAN BENITO DATABASES SAFE, BUT ARE SHUT DOWN FOR A WEEK Jaqueline McCool Reporter

Beginning Saturday, Aug. 18, the San Benito County information technology office took county websites offline, following the

detection of a virus in the system. Access to several databases, including elections and the assessor, was not possible for nearly a week. Emergency Services Manager Kevin O’Neill said several parts of the county website were back online as of Aug 27, but the process to get everything up was slow to ensure the virus did not re-enter the system. County emails were

still offline as of Aug. 27, and O’Neill said getting that system working was a top priority. O’Neill said the sites were taken down as a precautionary measure to make sure the virus didn’t spread. He said departments were being prioritized to get back online, but could not say when the process would be completed. O’Neill said the IT

department had been working 12- to 16-hour days to ensure the departments were back online. They are prioritizing the departments and completing the process in phases to ensure the virus won’t come back. “All of the county network is down, and that’s by choice,” O’Neill said. O’Neill said contacting individual department offices by telephone

was the best way for the public to get information. He believed departments would be able to give most information, despite the issues. County administrator Ray Espinosa said in a statement to the Free Lance, “I just want to assure the community that the county is still functioning and work is ➝ San Benito Web, 11
