EDITOR’S NOTE For so many of us, January is a month of reckoning. It’s the one month of the year we’ve all decided is the time to look our health and fitness goals dead on and say, “You! That’s right, you! I’m coming for you!”

I understand how wrong this can go. By the end of December, I’d run almost 800 miles for the year, and on New Year’s Eve I was laying plans for running 1,000 miles in 2018, imagining just how great that New Year’s Day run was going to feel and what a great start it was going to be to January. Then I woke up the next morning with the worst flu I’ve had

Barry Scott (GT, 1/3) seems to think that the RTC’s adding a trail-only scenario to the options for the rail corridor is some kind of subterfuge to undermine the will of Santa Cruz County residents, when in fact the addition of this scenario was made as an expression of the growing support for a wide, safe bicycle and pedestrian throughway that wasn’t an option when Measure D was passed.

The study he references, the Unified Corridor Investment Study, is merely the RTC’s intelligent examination into the facts of each of these alternatives so that citizens and our representatives will be able to fairly evaluate the cost/benefit of each.

Fact: the 1.3-mile disconnected piece of trail we’re getting ready to build now is necessarily narrow in order to protect the rail corridor tracks, and is already over its original budget by 100 percent due to removing trees and installing retaining walls and train signaling equipment—for a prospective train that is as yet unapproved and unfunded.

As for CalTrans’ 2018 State Rail Plan, if we’ve railbanked the corridor, after seeing how we like a wide, safe, protected bicycle and pedestrian trail from Davenport to Monterey County, and then the county

maybe ever, and couldn’t get out of bed for days. I lost two weeks of my grand plan to recovery time—so much for 1000 miles, probably.

Reckonings are not always easy.

voters want to pay for the proposed train service through town operating at speeds of “up to 125 miles per hour” (quoted from the CalTrans 2040 plan), then I’m all for it.

But in the meantime, let’s use our Measure D funds to continue the study and improve Highway 1 and our METRO service, and build a wide, scenic, protected trail now, with money we already have and which falls within the parameters of what the voters have already approved.

ONLINE COMMENTS RE: BLACK IN SANTA CRUZ As the parent of an adopted Black teen (who happens to know Ebony and her daughter Deshaun) and an adopted Latina teen, I can say that at least from my family’s experience, being Black is more challenging. There have been many times I cried with my daughter because, starting at 4 years old, she was bitten (is she made out of chocolate) or scrubbed (dirty) by peers and more recently, yelled insults, including the “n” word, when she and I were at the gas station by a passing by driver. I am Latina, but look white, and people do not realize I am her mother. The sad thing is that parents, school teachers and administrators often react to these offenses as “kids will be kids,” “it’s only one person in Santa Cruz,” “it can’t be >8

Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) and Envision Housing have partnered to draft a new document called This White Paper that has nine housing-related recommendations for 17 local communities designed to make housing more affordable. It also calls for fee changes, increased construction, density bonuses, funding for affordable housing, and changes to parking requirements.

Dickinson is now regarded as one of the most original American poets. I offer this story up as a pep talk for you, Sagittarius. In the coming months, I suspect you’ll be reinventing yourself. PISCES Feb19–Mar20 Gilbert Stuart painted the most famous portrait of America’s first president, George Washington. It’s the image on the U.S. one-dollar bill. And yet Stuart never finished the masterpiece.

Begun in 1796, it was still a work-in-progress when Stuart died in 1828. Leonardo da Vinci had a similar type of success. His incomplete painting “The Virgin and Child with St. Anne” hangs in the Louvre in Paris, and his unfinished “The Adoration of the Magi” has been in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery since 1671. I propose that Stuart and da Vinci serve as your role models in the coming weeks. Maybe it’s not merely OK if a certain project of yours remains unfinished; maybe that’s actually the preferred outcome.

Sweet Dreams Begin With A Healthy Mattress A Real Estate Retrospective

50 years ago this week I showed up in this world, a product of the Summer of Love. From my humble beginnings as a hippie kid, it is doubtful that anyone back then would have guessed that - of all things - I would now be passing the milestone of having spent more than half my life in real estate.

Considering that, when I was growing up, real estate wasn’t a profession I knew even existed, it took a series of fateful coincidences to land me in the career path that has shaped my adult life and brought me levels of success and fulfillment that I could have hardly imagined.

After an 8-year college career with little direction, I had returned to the Monterey Bay area to dabble in my father’s construction business in Monterey, but the physical rigors of construction didn’t feel like a match for me after years of scholastic learning and I much preferred the culture of Santa Cruz, so I decided to move up here instead.

On the other hand, his investments in real estate intrigued me greatly. I was impressed with the concept that you could buy a property and have rental income carry your mortgage while the value increased over time. I got a real estate license to learn more about such principles and also because it seemed a good opportunity to be able to earn commissions even as I learned about investment.

Looking back on my first real estate interview, it proved to be a formative if somewhat traumatic experience. Within a few minutes of meeting me, the broker had said, “I’ll give you a job here, but you’re going to have to cut your hair, ‘cause you look like a damn hippie and nobody is going to buy a house from you.”

Early on, the thrill of competing with my fellow agents, and being able to earn the trust of clients to represent them in the largest purchase of their lives kept my attention wrapped up with the profession of real estate. But over time, the example set by my father eventually brought my focus back to the basics of investment in real estate as a means of building a portfolio that can create a stable financial future.

me because I have Black friends,” “I’m not a racist.” We are all prejudiced in some way, but being Black in Santa Cruz (and other places which see themselves as liberal, accepting, or “I am not racist, classist, sexist, whatever,” is challenging and once we own up to this, we can move forward.

This is not to demean other people of color with complicated histories and experiences.

Just to honor and respect the authors of this article, the people who were profiled in it, and everyone who works for a more accepting and safe Santa Cruz.

I appreciate this article and the people who participated in it! Lovely idea, so important.

The caller is responsible for teaching new folks the various “figures,” such as a “chain,” “hey,” “butterfly whirl” or “mad robin”; they must also consider the desires of experienced dancers for something fun and intriguing. “Solstice Special,”

“Early in the Evening,” “New Year’s Eve,” and “Ice Princess Meltdown” are some of the thousands of written dances a caller may choose to teach.

Some expert callers pull together a variation of dance figures on the spot, or create a medley to add an element of surprise.

The dance form lends itself to inclusivity for its simplicity and adaptability, therefore contra dancers are diverse in age, energy and experience. New dancers are always welcome; each dance begins with a workshop to teach the basic figures.

“I love bringing newcomers into the joy of contra dance,” says local dance caller Andy Shore.

“It is wonderful watching their faces as they realize ‘I can do this!’ More seasoned dancers get to experience this, too.” Contra is incredibly forgiving of mistakes made in the dance pattern and some forgetfulness adds laughter and playfulness to the mood.

Local Santa Cruz contra dancer Ginger Hobbs describes the scene as “an exhilarating combination of socializing and exercise, flirtatious, creative and playful, and all happening to fantastic live music.”

The band changes tunes from a reel in A minor to a faster piece in G. The mood in the dance hall responds, with the sounds of footstomping, whoops and tongue trills.

The dancers’ enthusiasm creates a positive feedback loop with the band and intensifies the energy in the room. Several minutes into the dance, the moves become subconscious and a dance trance ensues. The caller stops prompting and the music and movement flow.

The Santa Cruz contra scene, in its 34th year, is part of a global subculture. One can travel danceto-dance around the country and continent-to-continent to engage with contra folk.

If only the world would be more like a contra dance—inclusive, flowing, creative, playful and synergistic. At least we cultivate it right here in our own town.

In the universe of bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, Sarah Blincoe says she’s one of a kind.

With her hair pulled back tightly through a black Callaway hat as she sits at the head of an ornate wooden table, Blincoe tells her largely male audience on the second floor of NextSpace in downtown Santa Cruz that “girls in bitcoin are like unicorns.”

She isn’t the only woman in the room, though. First-timer Karen, a massage therapist, shyly tells the group that she’s a “non-technical person trying to do this.”

Christina Prince, who attended the meetup with her husband, is curious about the “mysterious bitcoin” she’d been hearing about.

Blincoe looks happy to see Karen and Christina at the meeting, and makes sure they feel comfortable. As an industry vet and CEO of her own cryptocurrency company—Dual Stream Technology Inc.— the under-35 co-organizer of the monthly Santa Cruz Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Meetup says her main goal for 2017 “was to get more women involved in bitcoin.” She’s succeeded.

Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are going mainstream, attracting millions of people and billions of dollars. And since that August meeting, which drew 18 people, bitcoin has begun making bigger and bigger headlines. It broke through the $4,000 barrier for the first time later that month— which, at the time, was a historic high.

Four months later, the price of a single bitcoin has more than quadrupled, briefly rising above $18,000 before stabilizing around $13,500, where it sits today. The attendance of the Santa Cruz Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Meetup has also quadrupled, overwhelming the mediumsized conference room at NextSpace. The group’s 45th official meeting is at 6:30 p.m.

ohn Aird had a feeling UCSC leaders were preparing to make a big ask.

Aird is the co-founder of the Coalition for Limiting University Expansion (CLUE), which has been relatively quiet in recent years.

He admits to wishing he hadn’t supported a 2008 settlement agreement that allows UCSC to grow with a few stipulations limiting its impact. These days, Aird’s serving on one of three new groups that will provide input on the university’s next Long Range Development Plan.

“I expected that the university was going to present this committee with their case to grow. I expected that. You would have to be blind not to realize that the process to reach

out to the community was part of an effort to avoid the backlash that happened last time,” he says. “What I didn’t expect was an increase that large. This is a 50 percent increase.”

UCSC Chancellor George Blumenthal officially announced Friday, Jan. 12, that local government and community leaders should explore the idea of expanding the UCSC campus to accommodate 28,000 students as early as 2040.

That’s an increase of nearly 10,000 additional students over the school’s enrollment totals from last year.

“It’s just the reality of the world we live in. There’s no doubt about that.

The notion that we’re going to cap enrollment is simply not realistic,” Blumenthal told a private gathering

of local media the day before his announcement. “It’s a pipe dream.”

The school’s new goal, he says, is in line with UCSC’s values of embracing diversity and supporting social justice, while the state’s population grows and California’s prestigious public universities become even more competitive for already qualified students.

UCSC is currently embarking on its new LRDP, and will study the feasibility of the 28,000 number.

He stresses that there will be a long list of unknown factors over the next 22 years, and he says he’s open to hearing what the community has to say. He hopes community members feel the same way about hearing his ideas. >14

City Councilmember Cynthia Mathews, who serves on the Community Advisory Group, says there was a “collective gulp” at Friday’s meeting—followed by concern about Santa Cruz turning into a “company town.”

Santa Cruz County Supervisor Ryan Coonerty says he was hoping the university would announce that it would not be growing at all. In the coming days, he expects the community to have grave concerns about “the big three” issues where UCSC has an impact on the city of Santa Cruz—housing, traffic and water.

“It only reinforces the city and county’s position that UCSC shouldn’t grow, that we’re already overly impacted, and that if we do grow, they need to put all that growth on the campus, so it doesn’t affect our local housing supply, which is in crisis,” says Coonerty, who also serves on the Community Advisory Group.

Of all the impacts, Coonerty says the biggest issue is housing,

because rents are already so high and because housing growth affects the other major issues, like traffic and water.

As Santa Cruz mayor in 2008, Coonerty worked with Blumenthal on the agreement for the previous LRDP. That plan allows UCSC to grow to 19,500 students as early as 2020, and the campus agreed to limit its impacts. For instance, the agreement promised that UCSC would house two-thirds of all new enrollment growth.

Blumenthal is optimistic that UCSC can make a housing commitment like that again in this LRDP, although he says that the university isn’t legally obligated to.

“That’s something that has to come out of the process,” he says. “I’m just getting up here and telling you what is the charge that I gave to the LRDP committee to think about. Now, they may come back and say we should house three-quarters of our students.

They may come back and say we should house all of our new students.

They may come back and say, ‘This is

not sustainable.’ I don’t think they’ll do that. This is just the beginning.

I wanted to set a number and a timeframe so that people can start to plan and think about, ‘What would you have to do in order to make this work?’ We’re not prepared to make a commitment one way or the other.”

Coonerty says that the effects of campus growth will always be more important than the enrollment number itself, but he feels it’s hard to imagine growth of this magnitude working for Santa Cruz at all.

“I’m open, as always, to working with the university on reducing the impacts,” says Coonerty, who represents District 3, which includes UCSC. “I always think it’s helpful to focus on the impacts, rather than the number. But at the end of the day, we can’t have that much growth on a community this small.”

Blumenthal stresses that the university is not announcing that it will, no matter what, grow to 28,000 students. But he still believes “it’s better to pick a number that’s expansive.” He says that this

The Women’s March will be on Saturday, Jan. 20, and begins around noon at Locust Street and Pacific Avenue.

Anyone looking for something to do beforehand may want to check out the Reproductive Rights Network of Santa Cruz County, which is is hosting its annual Pro-Choice Brunch on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Santa Cruz, 250 California St. Karlyn Bennehoof, senior

development officer for the Center for Reproductive Rights, will be the day’s keynote speaker, and donations are kindly requested, as they make everything else possible.

“We usually give our speakers an honorarium. This year we’re having three speakers,” says Carole Fuller, chair of the network, which is made up of 50 other organizations. “We usually hold enough money to keep it ’til the next year.

We have to pay for the rental of the space and the food.

We’ve also sent money, in the past, to clinics that have been firebombed.”

This year’s theme is “The Defense Never Rests” for this annual Roe v. Wade celebration that Fuller says began 25 years ago in an effort to pressure then-California

Senator Henry Mello to stop voting to defund Medi-Cal abortion coverage. Mello definitely got the message, Fuller remembers, as he began voting differently.

All year, women’s voices have made headlines, whether it was Senator Kamala Harris (D-California), Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York), actress Rose McGowan, or Oprah.

And the #MeToo movement helped make “feminism” the 2017 word of the year, according to Merriam-Webster.

At the Women’s March, this year’s theme is “Be the Change,” highlighting continued resistance to the Trump administration. There will be an activist fair, food, art, speakers, and music.

The total market capitalization for bitcoin now exceeds $231 billion, and the total global market value of all cryptocurrencies is more than $700 billion.

More than 1,000 merchants accept Bitcoin, including Microsoft, Overstock.com, New Egg, Expedia, and Dish Network. Some companies, like Starbucks, let customers switch the currency onto what’s called a “Gyft Card,” while others convert cryptocurrencies to dollars for a fee. The currency is far from perfect, however, as certain fees run high, and it can take hours for a single transaction to go through.

The rise of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has mirrored the growth of Santa Cruz’s cryptocurrency meetup.

“Interest is coming in from all over the place,” Blincoe tells GT in a recent email.

“Healthcare, investing, distributed systems, nonprofits, financial institutions, and average everyday people join us each month. We are an extremely diverse group, with ages ranging from 9 years old to 80.”

There are no age limits on bitcoin, and one teenager invested birthday money from his grandmother six years ago. Now at 18, CNBC has reported that he’s a millionaire.

NextSpace’s intimate second-floor conference room, which hosted more than three years of pizza- and wine-fueled gatherings, can now barely hold the evergrowing meetings. Blincoe says she would love to host meetings in a new space that can hold a couple hundred people, and do beginners sessions to help educate the people of Santa Cruz County.

When Sean Gilligan co-founded the Santa Cruz Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Meetup with his two friends in July of 2014, he says he could have never anticipated the sudden explosion of interest in bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, or his Meetup.

Locals, Gilligan tells me, are starving for good information about bitcoin and other digital, virtual or alternative currencies.

Beginners have begun to overwhelm his monthly gatherings, and he gladly welcomes “crypto-newbies,” as he calls them.

The majority of attendees, says Gilligan,

are still those with technical backgrounds, like computer science, engineering and web development. But activists and those hoping for economic change have begun to come to the monthly meetings in large numbers as well. The fastest growing group at the Santa Cruz Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Meetups, he says, are investors, traders and speculators.

“Seasoned cryptocurrency specialists and the crypto-curious are all more than welcome to the group,” Gilligan explains in an email.

Part of bitcoin’s value is that only 21 million will ever exist, a decision that was largely made to prevent inflation. Each coin’s divided into 10 million smaller parts, called Satoshis.

The Satoshi is named for the mysterious creator of bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto. The secret identity of Nakamoto, the man who designed and launched the world’s first cryptocurrency in 2009, remains a growing legend. On exchanges like Coinbase or GDAX, investors or speculators can buy any percentage of a bitcoin that they wish, and have exposure to the cryptocurrency without having to pony up the more than the $13,000 it costs to buy an entire coin.

As bitcoin has soared in popularity, so has its notoriety. Skeptics have noted that bitcoins aren’t regulated like normal money.

Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz called for it to be outlawed for its “lack of oversight.” Others have decried bitcoin’s exorbitant energy use and called into question its volatility, the motives of its creators and its ability to remain insulated from fraud, but it’s been garnering more respect from economists.

The topic of fraud is one that comes up in the weekly meetings at NextSpace. There are many other intricacies to digital currency that Blincoe and Gilligan explore, like legal issues, fees, tax laws, where to buy cryptocurrencies, and setting up digital wallets.

“The future will be so much fun, and cater to a wide span of people no matter their exposure to technology,” writes Blincoe. “We are just getting started!”

number did not come down from the University of California Office of the President, although he says administrators would be “unhappy” if UCSC tried to cap expansion.

“I made a choice to give [a number] that I thought was not an unreasonable one to consider,” he says. “Is it magical?

Did I have a mathematical formula that got me there? Of course not.

But I think it’s quite reasonable.

And we have to study it. We have to understand what it means.”

The school is also planning to build a new housing development with a public-private partnership, and Blumenthal hopes that, if the project becomes successful, it will provide a model going forward for new housing developments on campus that lessen UCSC’s impacts on the city.

Listening to Blumenthal’s explanations, it’s hard to make out what the future of the school will be in the next few years, let alone two decades into the future. He says that if the campus grows at a rate of 400 students a year between now and 2040, that would allow it to grow to about 28,000 students, and he explains that there are plenty of unpredictable unknowns over the next 22 years that may offer exciting solutions.

At the same time, Blumenthal says that the university is at capacity right now—not just in terms of housing, but also when it comes to classrooms and basic infrastructure. Blumenthal doesn’t know when UCSC will even reach its target of 19,500 students, which it can legally do in a couple of years.

“I honestly don’t know. We’re getting closer. We’re now over 18,000 students. We are getting closer, but we don’t have the capacity to grow today like we had in the past. Inevitably, our growth has to slow down,” he says. “We don’t have the facilities.

We don’t have the classrooms. We don’t have the laboratory spaces. It isn’t a question of getting a bigger shoehorn to shove everybody in. We just plain don’t have the seats. I don’t know. There will be certainly some pressures to grow. If you look for instance at what’s being planned for the UC system for next year, there will be more growth in the UC system than there will be in Santa Cruz.”

NANOTECHNOLOGY Burgeoning with discoveries and innovations, the impact that the field of nanotechnology may have on the future of mankind cannot be minimized.

Particularly when it comes to medicine and the treatment of disease, nanotechnological advancements are taking place at breakneck speed, and are

highly specific to the disease being treated. For instance, as reported recently in the journal Nature Materials, scientists have recently developed microscopic particles (nanoparticles) that selectively seek out and destroy specific viruses, like the human papillomavirus and the herpes simplex virus. Traditionally, viral infections have been difficult to treat with medicine, but these new designer nanoparticles are capable of actually destroying the virus, representing a potential paradigm shift in how they are treated. Similarly, recent research published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society demonstrated that researchers have developed nanoparticles capable of tricking cancer cells into essentially killing themselves. And, unlike with traditional chemotherapy, these nanoparticles only target the cancer cells, while leaving normal and healthy cells unharmed.

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE “Antibiotic resistance has been called one of the world’s most pressing public health problems,” says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s website. It occurs when bacteria find a way to evade and survive the effects of antibiotics—even if only a small number do this, the ones that do can multiply, leading to an army of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that becomes more and more difficult to treat.

One stark example of this is Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted by ticks that produces symptoms like headache, fever, fatigue, and often a bull’s eye skin rash, and if left untreated can have serious, lifelong neurological side effects. A recent study of primates led by researchers at Tulane University found that Lyme bacteria could survive a 28-day course of antibiotic

Even more concerning was that some of the subjects in the study actually tested negative for Lyme disease based on an antibody test, even though the bacteria were still present in their bodies and had invaded organs like the heart and brain. This finding illustrates how difficult it can be to treat bacterial infections when antibiotics aren’t effective, and may help explain why people treated with them for Lyme disease often still report symptoms.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, about one in five U.S. adults experiences mental illness, and one in 25 U.S. adults experiences serious mental illness, every year. Additionally, 6.9 percent of U.S. adults had at least one major depressive episode in the last year, and 18.1 percent experienced an anxiety disorder.

But one exciting field of study that may help with this epidemic is that of psychopharmacogenetics, which is essentially using a person’s specific genetic makeup to

prescribe medications and doses, instead of taking what basically amounts to a shot in the dark.

Many antidepressants work only slightly better than a placebo in many studies and they are often wildly inconsistent in terms of effectiveness and type and severity of side effects. It turns out that this may be due to genetic differences among people whose bodies either break down the medications very rapidly or very slowly. In the case of the former, not enough of the drug reaches the brain to be effective, and in the case of the latter, too much of the drug builds up in the system and causes severe side effects. A better understanding of psychopharmacogenetics may lead to highly individualized and more effective treatments for all sorts of mental health conditions. Or perhaps simply try the quirky and counterintuitive approach of sleep deprivation (typically conducted in controlled, inpatient settings), which a recent meta-analysis covering more than 30 years and 66 studies found to rapidly reduce depressive symptoms in about

It is said that Father Time is undefeated, so the idea of hanging an “L” on him and turning back the clock has always been a deeply seductive human pursuit. In 2017, researchers published a paper in Science magazine describing a scientific breakthrough that could one day lead to a game-changing drug that may defy the normal aging process. The discovery centered on a metabolite known as NAD+—found in all living cells—that plays a key role in DNA repair. Mice given an NAD+ booster called NMN showed an improvement in their cells’ ability to repair DNA damage caused by old age, and the research is so encouraging that human trials are set to begin soon. Another type of anti-aging treatment known as senolytic drugs are also being championed for human trials by researchers. These drugs work by killing off old and damaged cells called senescent cells that hang around and wreak havoc in the body, and are implicated in many chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and diabetes.

The announcement comes on the heels of encouraging results from phase 2 clinical trials, and researchers look forward to teasing out just how effective MDMA-assisted psychotherapy might be when tested using the gold standard of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. It also represents somewhat of a full circle moment for MDMA, which was originally used in the psychotherapy community in the 1970s to much success and acclaim—but when the drug became associated with the recreational party scene, it got fast-tracked to criminalization. The FDA’s announcement may also have an opening-of-the-floodgates effect with respect to other psychedelics being studied in a similar manner.

In particular, drugs like psilocybin, ibogaine, and ketamine have all shown some level of effectiveness in treating other mental issues like depression, anxiety, and addiction, and are all good candidates for further research.

Pickle Power How the sport that no one had heard of took over Santa Cruz BY HUGH MCCORMICK

F

ive years ago, Santa Cruz pickleballers like Terrance Long were limited to a single court at Louden Nelson Community Center in downtown Santa Cruz. Today, because of the hard work and passionate lobbying efforts of Long and other members of the Santa Cruz Pickleball Club (SCPBC), there are 28 designated pickleball courts scattered throughout Santa Cruz County. ”The growth of Santa Cruz pickleball has been tremendous in the last four years,” says the 59-year-old Long. “The game is a great way to get some exercise and to have fun at the same time. It’s

easy to learn, and even easier to get good quickly.”

A cross between tennis, badminton, and ping pong, the explosive growth and popularity of pickleball—in Santa Cruz County and across the nation—has been astounding.

There are an estimated 2.46 million pickleball players in the United States, and even though the sport (in its earliest form) has been around since 1965, most of its growth has occurred within the past decade. Often touted as the country’s fastest growing sport, the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) in its annual “Listings of Places to Play” report, estimates

that 76 new pickleball courts are being constructed each month in the U.S. and Canada, with a current total of around 3,748 courts in the U.S. The Santa Cruz Pickleball Club (SCPBC) boasts more than 200 active members, and the unmistakable pick-pock of the whiffle-like pickleball can be heard across the county each and every day of the week.

As a founding member of the SCPBC and an official ambassador for the USAPA, the youthfullooking Long has seen his “little fringe sport” blossom into a full-on recreational craze. He and his wife Karen Long, now president of the

SCPBC, have been instrumental in bringing and promoting pickleball within county lines.

“We have an awesome group of players,” says Long. “A mix of ages, genders, and ethnicities that continues to grow. It’s easy to learn and it’s really getting popular.”

IN A PICKLE On a cool and cloudy Friday morning in late December, Brommer Park swarmed with pickle ballers of all shapes and sizes. Eight courts, four players to a court, were filled completely, and 15 people stood eagerly in the wings, waiting for a

Experienced picklers happily hit with pickleball neophytes, offering helpful tips, suggestions, and encouragement. The mood was light, airy, jovial, and totally welcoming.

After each game, tired and sweaty pickle ballers approached the net and tapped paddles in good spirits.

The “sport that no one’s heard of” is actually a pretty big deal here in Santa Cruz County. Pickleball regulars do their best to explain their passion: “It’s much like being a ping pong player on the surface of the table,” some say. Other players just throw in the towel, and say “it’s four dudes with paddles

hitting a ball.” Most diehards have a ready answer for the incessant and inevitable “what the hell is pickleball?” question, though, which they follow with an encouragement for newbies to try the sport for themselves.

So what the hell is pickleball?

Here are the basics: Pickleball is played on a court measuring 20 by 44 feet—the same size as a doubles badminton court—and players (singles or doubles) use aluminum/ graphite paddles to hit a ball (similar to a wiffle ball) over a 34- to 36-inch net. The paddles (usually ranging from $80-$150) are smaller than a tennis racquet, but larger than a ping pong paddle. The game is fastpaced, even though the white or yellow wiffle-esque ball travels at only a third of the speed of a tennis ball.

Like in tennis or ping pong, players serve cross-court, but underhand, to bring the ball into play. The “double bounce rule” ensures the serving team lets the ball bounce when returned. The court is striped similar to a tennis court, with left and right service courts, but with no alleys. There is a 7-foot non-volley “deathzone” in front of both sides of the net, affectionately known as “the kitchen.” Much of the fast-paced action occurs at the net, and the kitchen equalizes the power players from the not-so-strong players.

The first team/individual to 11 points wins, though they must win by two points.

It really only takes one session to grasp the game’s nuances and funky scoring, and to remember to stay out of the bloody kitchen.

impact exercise, and because there is not as much running around as there is in tennis. The learning curve is fairly mild as well; pretty much anyone who’s ever played a racquet sport can pick up the game easily.

Jerry Louis is 70. Now an expert 5.0 player, Louis says his physical and emotional health improved markedly once he started to play pickleball regularly.

“The social aspect is fabulous,” Louis says. “Many older people have no real social interaction. It gets you out of the house to do something physical, and the health benefits are enormous. After just a little while, you feel better.”

Louis and a huge number of ex-tennis-playing seniors have switched allegiances, abandoning tennis for pickleball. Their reasons are both physical and mental.

Pickleball is a sport that can be enjoyed at any level of intensity, and the perfect form/amount of physical exercise for anyone healing from overuse injuries. It’s proven to be less strenuous, requires less running and most importantly, the people are much, much chiller.

“It’s the most welcoming group of any sport I’ve ever been involved in,” says Louis. “And in my 70-71 years I’ve been involved in a lot.”

This sentiment is echoed by pickleballers across the nation.

The people who play pickleball are just nicer. Maybe it’s the funny name or the silly wiffle ball. Maybe it’s the sage wisdom of an older generation—but no matter where you play, pickleball courts are always full of laughter, hope, joy, and encouragement.

That’s a far cry from tennis, say many.

Long admits that “tennis is a game with too much etiquette. No laughing, no helping each other out with tips, no smiling. With pickleball you can laugh and joke around.

People exchange phone numbers. It’s a community. That never happened with tennis.”

Long believes that the social part of the game is the reason so many people are abandoning tennis in favor of pickleball. “Pickleball is

welcoming to all,” he says.

Not everyone is happy about the meteoric rise of pickleball, though.

The “country’s fastest growing sport” has drawn the ire of tennis players across the nation, especially here in Santa Cruz County.

Many tennis players have become increasingly weary of the up-andcoming sport of pickleball—and of losing precious tennis courts throughout Santa Cruz County. A vicious battle between the SCPBC and disgruntled tennis players has raged for years. Both sides have sent numerous letters to the Board of Supervisors, and have accused each other of wrongdoing and outright lies. The debate of whether or not to build four permanent pickleball courts at Brommer Park became especially divisive. Pickleball uses a different kind of net than tennis, and Brommer Park is the only court with pickleball nets—at other courts, players set them up for each match. Websites and social media posts like “Santa Cruz Pickleball Club: Lies by the Truckload” were met with claims from the SCPBC about the benefits of pickleball, the county’s need for more courts, and its growing popularity.

“For some, change is hard,” says Long. “We show up at city council meetings in large numbers. Peaceful and respectful, but with a story.”

The SCPBC’s steering committee has been actively working with the city of Santa Cruz, the County, and Scotts Valley. Their numbers at City Council meetings dwarf those of tennis players.

“There has been animosity with tennis players. We’ve been battling them for five years,” says Louis wistfully. Louis points to the rise of pickleball and equates it to that of snowboarding.

When snowboarding first began, skiers didn’t want people snowboarding on their ski slopes.

“Now there are more snowboarders than skiers,” says Louis. “I think that’s what’s going to happen with pickleball and tennis.”

by the number of people thrusting their faces near the glass boxes and framed prints in the hope of recapturing a distant memory.

Statements like “I remember that beach” and “honey, it’s Wilder Creek” were heard frequently.

Killion’s exhibit is a welcoming journey that you can begin in Southern California; from there, the room swings to the right and wraps around a corner to the Pacific Ocean, Big Sur and Point Lobos.

Most visitors were instinctively drawn to what they knew: Natural Bridges, Davenport, Año Nuevo.

The show continues on to Killion’s current Point Reyes locale before melding into the Northern California coastline finale.

Born and raised in Mill Valley, Killion’s obsession with the California landscape spans the entire coast, extending from below the Santa Monica Mountains to the North Coast’s picturesque beaches and beyond. An avid backpacker and hiker, he spends the majority of his time outside. He says he began printmaking almost accidentally when he broke his leg in a bicycle collision.

“I would have never become a printmaker if I hadn’t been hit by a car,” Killion says.

In school, he studied African history, eventually travelling to Africa where he worked in Sudan as administrator of a medical relief program in a camp for Ethiopian refugees. His time abroad inspired his 1990 book Walls: A Journey Across Three Continents, which was published five years before he

returned to California and began teaching at San Francisco State University. He has since published multiple illustrated books on California’s landscapes.

The process hasn’t changed much in 1,000-plus years, and is just as laborious and difficult as you’d imagine. Some prints require as many as 12 separate blocks, and that’s before the printing part has even started. If the print is in color, as the majority of his work is, each color requires its own block and run through the press.

Along with Killion’s work, the show includes poetry and excerpts from poets and writers like Jane Hirshfield, Jack Spicer, Jaime de Angulo, and Pulitzer winner Gary Snyder. Snyder and Killion are longtime friends and collaborators, and worked together on his California Coast book. The poetry is in both English and Spanish.

Part of the fun, Killion says, is that he never really knows how a print will turn out.

“There is always a surprise,” Killion says. “That’s the great joy of printmaking. It takes part of the construction of the image out of your hands and puts it out into this magical space.”

T

he night Barack Obama was elected in 2008, Laura Burhenn was living in Washington D.C. and had an amazing night. “I drank champagne on the street with strangers in front of the White House,” she says. “Joan Baez was randomly there next to me.”

It was the complete opposite in 2016, when Donald Trump won the election. Burhenn was on a solo tour, and on election night she was in Portland, Oregon, in shock. She finished out her tour over the next month in a zombie haze, trying to understand what exactly happened.

“I felt tired and traumatized. I’m

sure that’s how most people felt even if they were at home. I thought, ‘I don’t know what to do with this,’” Burhenn says. “I felt like I was feeling not only my own feelings, but everybody else’s feelings as well.”

It was in January, after watching the inauguration and experiencing the Women’s March in L.A.—where she now lives—that everything really clicked for her. She spoke with a friend of hers, Patrick Damphier, about recording an album for her group Mynabirds. Over the course of two weeks, she wrote and recorded the passionate, New Wave-inspired indie pop record Be Here Now, which was released on Aug. 25 last year.

“I felt like I was a journalist in making this record, where I was making a record of the time. But it wasn’t like, ‘here’s the facts.’ It was like, ‘here is how everyone is feeling.’ The album to me sounds like a mood ring,” Burhenn says.

Trump’s horrific presidency continued to fuel her record even as she was making it. She recalls being in the studio when he announced the Muslim ban, and the airport protests that shut it down. The song that came from that, “Hold On,” spoke about the issues facing refugees in these times. She even enlisted a Burundian refugee choir to sing backing vocals on the song.

“In those two weeks, America changed in ways that didn’t seem possible. There were all of these executive orders being passed,” Burhenn says. “I thought, ‘oh my god, I’ve got to write a song for refugees.’”

Writing and recording an entire record of material in such a short period of time was a first for Burhenn. Although she had addressed political issues on her albums before, she had never written something so immediate. She didn’t want this material to become dated while she waited for a label to release it. She instead opted to release the album as a couple of EPs as quickly as possible, before releasing the album in its entirety later in the year.

“I didn’t really care about making money on this. I didn’t even know if I’d tour it,” Burhenn says. “I was afraid that if we don’t get these songs out now, they’re not going to be timely. They’re going to be totally irrelevant in a month or two, which is hilarious wishful thinking looking back on that now.”

The feel of the music jumps around from song to song because the feelings that Burhenn was going through at this time were so complex. The title track “Be Here Now” is an optimistic call to action inspired by her experience at the Women’s March.

“I expected to feel a unity of anger. But instead, what happened was this overwhelming sense of joy.

That’s where the song ‘Be Here Now’ came from. That was the greatest party I’ve ever been to. It was complex. My experience wasn’t just one particular emotion. It was an overwhelming relief,” Burhenn says.

She’s also still processing the meaning of the album, in the middle of the Trump administration.

“I think with this record, I tried to just sit with each feeling. That’s why I called it Be Here Now, to get to that Zen principle of meditating to let thoughts and feelings come and go, and just recognize that feelings are fleeting,” Burhenn says. “That feeling doesn’t define us. And finding wisdom amidst chaos is a matter of sitting with the emotion and letting it turn into whatever it will.”

YAYA’S KITCHEN Sarah Cruse recalls an earlier musical project that she worked on during a dark period of her life—the darkness, she says, was represented in the music itself. But you would never know Cruse had a dark side by watching her current band, Yaya’s Kitchen, which emanates joy and a passion for life.

Yaya’s Kitchen is a collaboration between her and guitarist Toby Salciccia, who she met at a Reiki class in 2013 and clicked with instantly.

Together they meshed their styles into what they like to refer to as soulfolk “with a hint of hip-hop,” but really it’s less about the genre than the spirit of the music, which they see as something even deeper than happiness.

Before Yaya’s Kitchen was a band, they curated an open mic at Café Gratitude for a year and a half. This eventually led to the two of them writing original songs together. It took nearly two years for them to come up with the right name. They landed on Yaya’s Kitchen, because Yaya is Cruse’s nickname.

Currently the group is working on their debut full-length album, which will be called Oh Mama. RAILROAD EARTH I have no idea what the roots music scene is like in Stillwater, New Jersey, but if Railroad Earth is any indication, the rural town has it going on. Formed in 2001, the Americana/newgrass band with a penchant for jamming made a splash almost as soon as it was formed, performing at the renowned Telluride Bluegrass Festival that same year.

Led by singer-songwriter/frontman Todd Sheaffer, Railroad Earth has released a steady stream of albums since then, each of them capturing the upbeat, downhome fusion of traditional techniques and contemporary delivery. Sexual exploration fuels ‘Call Me By Your Name’

A

merican movies that deal frankly with sexuality are mostly sniggering comedies or tales of dark obsession. We’re not used to movies portraying sexual exploration as a normal part of growing up, without a lot of moral and religious Sturm und Drang weighing it all down. Which is one reason the much-lauded, coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, has such a European feel to it—and the fact that this international co-production is directed by Italian Luca Guadagnino (A Bigger Splash), and set in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy.

Scripted by the great James Ivory

(veteran director of classics like A Room With a View and Howard’s End), from a 2007 novel by ItalianAmerican writer André Aciman, Call Me By Your Name follows the relationship between the 17-year-old son of a globe-trotting academic, and the 24-year-old American grad student hired as his father’s research assistant. Evolving over six weeks of a hot, lazy, Italian summer in 1983, the story explores physical attraction, yearning, and romantic attachment in ways viewers of all sexual orientations can understand.

The protagonist is Elio (a starmaking performance by Timothée Chalamet, last seen in Lady Bird).

Elio’s father (Michael Stuhlbarg), of Jewish and mixed-European extraction, is an American archaeology professor who moves the family to a 17th-century villa every summer to study fragments of ancient Greek statuary that periodically wash up on the local shore. Elio’s upbringing is culturally rich; English, French and Italian are spoken in the house, his mother (Amira Casar) reads them fairy tales in German, and his parents’ friends are critics and historians.

Elio reads a lot, but he’s not necessarily shy or bookish. He has friends among the local teens, mostly girls with whom he flirts

and experiments. But it’s an event of seismic proportions when his father’s new summer research assistant arrives. Oliver (Armie Hammer) is a brash, handsome American, self-possessed and confident. “Later,” he chirps whenever he’s about to take off somewhere. All the village girls instantly fall in love with him.

Elio, too, is fascinated. But as relatively sophisticated as he is for his years, his ever more complicated feelings for Oliver are unchartered territory for him. They become friends, as Elio tours Oliver around the village on their bikes and introduces him around.

Also European is the movie’s slow, leisurely pace, and its unafraid depiction of the physical aspect of sexual attraction. But the focus wisely remains on Elio as he comes to terms, emotionally, with his own identity, whether slaking his urges with some very unique stimuli, or holding the screen in the final minutes (a closeup of Chalamet’s expressive face), without dialogue, as Elio makes up his mind to move on.

I had issues with the pep-talk Elio’s father gives him toward the end; it’s meant to be a moment of heroic parental support, but it feels overwritten and insincere, presuming to offer absolution Elio doesn’t seek.

The Sufjan Stevens songs felt a bit overly poppy to me, too. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise thoughtful, courageous film.

(And here’s another interesting aspect of the 1983 setting: no one has a cell phone. Instead of wandering around with their eyes glued to their hands, the village teenagers are actively participating in their own lives, and the life of the community. They ride bikes, they swim, they go dancing at night in the village square. And they read; Elio and his friends are always exchanging books. If the story were set in the modern day, these kids might google “sex,” but it wouldn’t occur to them to try it.)

And yet the acclaim for Phantom Thread has been nearly universal, with some critics calling it his best film yet. Pretty wise of him to re-team with There Will Be Blood ’s Daniel Day Lewis (who says this film will be his last role) for the true story of the turbulent love life of 1950s London fashion icon Reynolds Woodcock. That’s exactly what this latest film from director Ridley Scott is, telling the true story of how billionaire John Paul Getty balked at paying ransom money to the men who kidnapped his grandson in the 1970s. Perversely, it’s gotten a buzz bump from the fact that one of its central performances— Christopher Plummer as the elder Getty—was recast mid-production after original actor Kevin Spacey was accused of sexual assault, requiring Spacey’s scenes to be reshot. Well, that’s what he would do if he were a real commuter, but apparently he just plays one in this action movie about a businessman who gets caught up in a criminal conspiracy on his drive home. Don’t forget to check your phone a lot to see

how the conspiracy’s going, Liam!

DARKEST HOUR Just a few years ago, Hollywood trade mags were asking “What’s wrong with Gary Oldman?” after he gave a rambling, profanity-laced interview to Playboy magazine in which he defended Mel Gibson’s anti-semitism and whined about Obama’s supposedly terrible presidency. He then went on the expected apology tour, and here he is playing Winston Churchill in an Oscar-bit World War II movie. Take note, crazy-saying Matt Damon!

Luckily, perhaps, avowed libertarian Oldman is unrecognizable in makeup as celebrated reformist Churchill, as director Joe Wright traces the critical decisions Churchill made immediately upon becoming prime minister, ending Britain’s strategy of Nazi appeasement and taking a stand against Hitler. Kristin Scott Thomas, Ben Mendelsohn and Lily James costar. (PG-13) 127 minutes.

THE DISASTER ARTIST This giddy, lightly fictionalized adaptation of a non-fiction book about making The Room is directed by James Franco, who also stars as Wiseau, in a performance of fascinating weirdness. You don't have to know anything about the movie or its makers to enjoy this affectionate look at outsiders amok in the Hollywood dream factory. (R) 103 minutes. (LJ) FERDINAND The classic children’s book The Story of Ferdinand has not gone out of print since its publication in 1936, so my guess is there will be plenty of enthusiasm for this animated adaptation— unless they changed the ending to make the pacifist bull a world heavyweight champ. Directed by Carlos Saldanha. Featuring the voices of Cena, Kate McKinnon, Anthony Anderson and David Tennant. (PG) 106 minutes. (SP) INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY So far, this horror franchise has given us exactly one half of a good movie (the first half of the first film), but

it keeps right on rolling along. In fact, the scariest thing about the Insidious films might be keeping the timeline straight. The third film was a prequel to the first film, and now this fourth one is a sequel to the prequel, but still comes before the first two films. It continues (er, continues to set up?) the mythology of “the Further,” which is basically an astral purgatory that unlucky kids keep getting stuck in and needing demonologist Elise Rainier to pull them out of.

Directed by Adam Robitel. Starring Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell. (PG-13) 103 minutes.(SP) LADY BIRD With Lady Bird, writerdirector Greta Gerwig delivers a wry but warm-hearted portrait of family, home, and dreams in modern America. The family in question is not dysfunctional in any clichéd movie comedy way, but Gerwig captures the gulf of potential calamity in the fractious relationship between a high-school senior (Saoirse Ronan) and her loving, but harried mom (Laurie Metcalf). As in most motherdaughter relationships, one false move or the wrong word might set either one of them off as they try to navigate the minefield of what they think or feel, and their ability (or not) to express it. Odeya Rush and Jake McDorman co-star. (R) 93 minutes.

PADDINGTON 2 People seemed to like the 2014 adaptation of the popular children’s book, so you better believe there’s a sequel! At the center of the story once again is the (mostly) CGI bear, who can talk and live with humans. This time, he gets to solve a mystery— finally, something realistic! I was beginning to feel like bears were being misrepresented by this series. Directed by Paul King.

Starring Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant and Hugh Bonneville. (PG) 103 minutes.

THE SHAPE OF WATER You could call it Beauty and the Beast meets The Creature From the Black Lagoon, but that doesn't suggest the profound emotional pull and dramatic resonance of this bewitching new movie from Guillermo del Toro. Sally Hawkins is marvelous as a mute, spinsterish woman mopping floors at a secret, Cold War-era government research facility, who bonds with a captive amphibious man (soulful Doug Jones) — a sentient being capable of intelligence and compassion. In small deft strokes, theirs becomes one of the most compelling, fanciful, and satisfying love stories of the year — in the name of diversity, tolerance, and the right to fall in love with whoever you choose. Del Toro's sheer joy of filmmaking is contagious in this evocative modern fairy-tale.

(LJ) THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI Frances McDormand is superb as a middleaged mother with a spectacularly vulgar mouth, a fearless takeno-prisoners attitude, and a relentless drive to see justice done after the unsolved murder of her teenage daughter. Another actress might chomp on the scenery with extra relish and hot sauce, but McDormand plays her small and close, with her volatility —and vulnerability—boiling at the surface. Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell are also great in this layered and complex morality play from playwright-filmmaker Martin McDonagh (In Bruges) — once again mixing raucously funny dialogue and irreverent observation of human nature with an uncompromising sense of morality. Directed by McDonagh.

Persephone Found Aptos’ Persephone: Lovely setting for an ambitious menu BY CHRISTINA WATERS

F

rom a gleam in the eyes of an entrepreneurial family to the handsome neo-Craftsman dining room that has emerged, Persephone is a good-looking newcomer to the Aptos scene.

Completely transformed from its past as a pizza parlor, Persephone offers deep banquette nooks, white table cloths, and polished wood floors to pamper its guests. The remodel is the handiwork of architect Dennis Britton, who created a light, highceilinged space for the cooking of

chef Cori Goudge-Ayer and her pastry chef/mother Karen Potter. Such a beautiful dining room deserves an ambitious menu. And Persephone certainly has one. The wine list is as long as the dinner menu is short, and from a handful of wines by the glass we chose a finely-structured berry-bright Broccardo Dolcetto d’Alba ($14) and an Italian Vino Rosso made from a dozen varietals ($15). The house sourdough focaccia arrived in a linen-lined basket, along with olive oil and a complex garlic

spread. Soft and toothsome, it made a low-key accompaniment to our meal.

Melody and I took our time scoping out possibilities on the menu, which offers several prix fixe variations starting at $54, so that new patrons can source out a wide range of flavors.

First courses arrived swiftly, mine a half order of Truffled Tortiglioni ($11/ half) sauced with a very mild artisanal cheese sauce and dotted with a slice of truffle. Melody’s was a gorgeous bowl of butternut squash soup ($12), ringed with a green herb cream and topped

with crispy fried spaghetti squash. The soup was a lovely creation, both richly flavored and elegantly creamy. The pasta delivered little flavor and cried out for more aggressive seasoning. Of our two entrees, we both preferred the generous portion of strip loin steak ($32), sliced across an aromatic cushion of cipollini onions, crisp potatoes, mushrooms, and squashes in an appealing red wine sauce. A more flavor-intensive cut of meat, however, might have justified the hefty price.

From the menu’s four entrees I had chosen the only fish option—seared ling cod ($28). The fish was moist and mild inside an expert crisp crust accompanied by a host of flavor ideas.

Braised fennel, mysteriously cold confit of tomatoes, a sensuous puree of parsnip, tasty buds of romanesco, and a caper-dill yogurt sauce. There was more—crispy bits on top which were identified as shallot, and a slick of watercress oil. Any two of the above adornments might have been sufficient to flatter the mild-flavored fish. This is not a kitchen, thus far, devoted to minimalism.

The dessert menu here is equally ambitious and wide-ranging. A flourless chocolate bundt cake with many sauces, and a persimmon and grape panna cotta were on offer, but we went with a shared order of apple tart ($12) and a glass of excellent Birichino Muscat Canelli ($8). The deconstructed tart was organized into a tower of flavors. From a small pastry base arose a little “cake” of baked apples with a scoop of caramel ice cream on top. The ice cream was dotted with black sea salt that made all the flavors pop. A tuile perched on top. This modestly proportioned dessert we finished up quickly, except for the uncrisp pastry.

Our check arrived as we were still consuming dessert, which, frankly, made us feel rushed—and at $117 for dinner, before tax and gratuity, we wanted to enjoy the surroundings.

I anticipate another visit to the evolving Persephone in the near future, hoping for an expanded menu of choices in this very attractive dinner house.

In particular, when they couldn’t find authentic British fish and chips here, they decided to take things into their own hands. A year ago, they participated in their first pop-up for their company Scrumptious Fish and Chips, at the Food Lounge. These days, you can find them once a month at Steel Bonnet brewery in Scotts Valley. The next time they’ll be there is Friday, Jan. 26. Tim talked to us about what makes their fish and chips authentic.

TIM KORINTH: Obviously starting with the right product. From the fish perspective, in the U.K., most fish and chips will either be cod or haddock. I use Pacific cod. It’s a nice, moist, flaky fish that contrasts really well with a crispy batter. The chips make a significant difference. It’s not just a matter of cutting a potato and frying it. There’s a whole process that goes into a proper chip, which is thicker, a fluffier interior, a golden,

crunchy exterior that’s seasoned.

A French fry is typically about a quarter of an inch in thickness, whereas a chip is about half an inch.

It’s like a steak-cut fry. But the process is you have to remove some of the excess starch and you have to twice fry it to get the right texture.

The techniques and recipes I use are all authentic. Everything we do, we make it from scratch.

You serve a tartar sauce and curry ketchup?

I was actually born in Germany and I grew up in England. So we get the curry ketchup from my German heritage. The German version of fish and chips is Currywurst and chips, which is a bratwurst made with this curry ketchup. It’s one of those sauces that I just love. It goes really well with the chips. Even though the curry ketchup is not a traditional English item, it’s just something that I brought with me based on my background, because of my heritage. Everyone seems to love it. f you haven’t made it to VinoCruz yet, the new wine bar in Soquel, then you are in for a treat. My husband and I had a delightful visit there recently, for both winetasting and dinner.

VinoCruz has an abundance of interesting varietals, all local.

One label caught my eye—a bright pink rose on a black background

by DeVincenzi Cellars. But it’s the contents of the bottle that count, and this Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 is very fruit-forward and robust. With all of the distinctive aromas and flavors of a good Cab— black currant, tobacco and coffee notes, with some nuances of vanilla, toast and spice—it’s a hefty mouthful of red wine. VinoCruz describes it as “a big wine with notes of chocolate, leather and a long finish.” It sells for $13 a glass at VinoCruz, and it’s also available there by the bottle.

DeVincenzi Cellars is operated by Frank Virgil, and since it’s quite new, there is no tasting room or website, but you can follow them on Facebook, and taste their wines at VinoCruz.

Virgil tells me he has now released the 2014 Cab, and it sells for around $20.

When the grill is hot, brush and oil the grill.

When the flames have dissipated place the steaks on a hot spot on the grill. Brush with the excess marinade and move the steaks out of the flame if there is a flare up. Grill the steak for 4 to 5 minutes on each side for medium rare. Remove the steaks from the grill and let them rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. Serve immediately after slicing.

Yes, I shop here at least four days a week. Shopper’s is not only convenient to where I live but it’s the best grocery store. I love Shopper’s! You walk in the door and you’ve got the wooden floors — how good does that get?! It’s like 1950’s home… I like the size of the store. It’s cozy. I like that I know where everything is, and if I can’t find something, I’ll ask Dennis. He’s been here forever. I stop in at all times, including as early as 6:30 am when commuting to Salinas, to pick up Pacific Cookie Company goodies for my boss, ‘Mr. Health!’ Shopper’s is charming, and I think on-site ownership is an an important aspect.

Important, how so? I was shopping here when Jim’s (Beauregard) dad, Bud and his partner, Vin Williams, ran the store. Now you can talk with Jim, and his son, Andre. Thing runs so smoothly. The checkers are very friendly and efficient: I can get in and out faster than any other store in in the area. I think the produce is perfect and the meats are the best in town, because of the high quality, plus the butchers are fun to shoot the breeze with. The guys are real pros, I’ve see them in the locker room and I appreciate that nothing is precut or packed in styrofoam. You know what else I like? Shopper’s unbelievable wines. I usually get an Alfaro wine; Shopper’s carries it all and at all levels.

What do you like to cook? From Asian to Italian to barbecue to California and more. It seems like Shopper’s has whatever I’m looking for — a terrific pasta selection, fantastic Spanish olive oils, sombal oelec, a spicy Asian hot sauce, and more. Shopper’s is known for carrying great local products such as the produce, of course, as well as the coffees, Avida scones, the best I’ve ever had, and Companion breads — are you kidding me?! I see a ton of my patients here: I’m talking old Santa Cruz, the people that have kept this town going and connected to community. I just had a chance meeting with a new UCSC big wig. I told her, ‘Shopper’s has the best of everything.’
