EDITOR’S NOTE I remember when GT publisher Jeanne Howard and I went over to meet SCPD Chief Andy Mills for the first time at his office, as he was just starting the job. I walked away thinking, “Hmm, nice guy. Some of his ideas could shake this place up—but who knows if he’ll really get to implement them.”

But indeed, he is. Mills’ op-ed in GT last month announcing he wanted to “break the cycle of reactionary homeless policy” was a strong opening salvo. This week’s cover story from Andrea Patton takes a close look at how that policy shift is shaping up, particularly in regard to the homeless encampment that has sprouted up in San Lorenzo Park as a result of Mills’ stated desire to quit chasing sleeping homeless people around the city, issuing citations.

What most stands out in this story, I think, is Mills’ ability to

Re: “Primed Risk” (GT, 10/8): Ireland was just hit by a hurricane, a very rare occurrence. Six hurricanes followed one after the other, with Maria hitting Puerto Rico and nearby islands with ferocity. Irma hit the entire State of Florida, which never happened before. Harvey stayed over Houston longer than normal, dumping 50 inches of rain, due to a recent slowdown of air currents, hotter ocean water and hotter air over land.

The multiple fires in California, fueled by lush vegetation from heavy winter rains, then hotter, drier air in the summer, created huge losses of acres of forest, vegetation, and entire neighborhoods.

Too many people died. Too many lost their homes, businesses, and communities. Climatechange-exacerbated disasters are rapidly becoming more expensive than spending the money required to fix the problem.

When will we realize we are in a worldwide emergency, and start letting our Members of Congress know every day that we want action commensurate with the

build a powerful, if shaky, coalition of support from a lot of different factions, despite the skepticism that many locals unsurprisingly have toward letting the homeless population set up camp in a public park. It just goes to show, I think, that people are desperate for some progress in how Santa Cruz deals with its homeless issues. Those issues are not going away; housing here is not suddenly, miraculously going to be affordable for everyone.

Patton’s story reveals that the San Lorenzo Park camp is home to a range of people, who don’t always fit into the popular assumptions about homelessness. It also explains why, as a viable solution, this experiment is full of both flaws and possibilities for the future. I’m reminded of what Mills wrote in his op-ed, that if he can’t find a way to help foster real change, “another chief in 15 years will struggle with the same problems I wrestle with now.” I hope that’s one of Mills’ visions for the future that doesn’t come to pass.

STRANGER ‘THING’ Kudos for Steve Palopoli’s stellar interview with John Carpenter (GT, 11/1). Working at UCSF when The Thing debuted, I was struck by how perfectly it captured, intentionally or not, the sexual paranoia of the early AIDS era (and I eventually wore out my copy of the edgy soundtrack album). It was also that extremely rare remake of a good movie that was actually superior to the original, a notable exception to the general rule. Remaking a classic film seems like a setup for failure. I’ve never understood why producers of remakes don’t go looking for flawed movies with fascinating basic premises. Thanks again for the feature on one of America’s finest directors.

Actor/writer Jason Segal offered audiences a quick bite of genius in his 2008 film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, when his character manned a Dracula puppet and performed a rock opera called A Taste for Love. Segal later said that he had thought about doing an entire live production of Taste, but that his mentor Judd Apatow told him that would “never” be a good idea. GT editor Steve Palopoli pressed Segal during a live Q&A on Friday in Santa Cruz. Never?

Segal has been reconsidering; maybe it could work, he said, if it was staged in small venues.

Santa Cruz’s new rules for takeout containers and disposable cutlery went into effect on Tuesday, Nov. 7. The revised ordinance, approved by the Santa Cruz City Council in September, requires food service businesses to switch any to-go containers to materials that are biodegradable, compostable or recyclable.

Plastic cutlery is not allowed, although compostable cutlery is. The rule bans plastic straws, plastic stir sticks and all polystyrene products, including hot beverage lids. Restaurants must only give out cutlery when customers request it.

ONLINE COMMENTS RE: BUSINESS CLOSURES Great article Jake! When all that is left is chain stores and chain restaurants, Santa Cruz will be just like any other town. “Nothing to see here folks … same stores, same restaurants, different town.”

E-commerce doesn’t appeal to all of us, and there is no personality in a computer screen. Virtual dining out, anybody? A resident of Santa Cruz County for more than 25 years, I finally decided that my paycheck was more valuable to me if I could save some of it, or better afford gas and

food–instead of giving it all to a landlord.

Certainly the problem is complex. But a big piece of the puzzle is a lack of housing inventory. People who buy homes with cash with no intention of living in them, and the vacation homeowners who usurp local housing inventory contribute to the crisis.

Maybe after they’ve bought everything out from under what’s left of the middle class, they’ll wonder where all the nice restaurants and wait staffs went, or why there is a teacher shortage. This is not a “tip of the iceberg” warning. There is a hole in the hull of our community.

BY MARIA GRUSAUSKAS permafrost since November of that year. “And so we’re really trying to figure out what it is that made that strain so rapidly lethal,” says Motyka, who recommends the book The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History for anyone interested in learning more about it.

While 1918 was pre-vaccination and pre-antibiotics (“If you got pneumonia, you were toast,” says Motyka), the yearly flu epidemic remains a serious public health matter 100 years later. One thing we now know about the flu virus is that it is continually evolving.

“The flu has a segmented genome, so that means it can redistribute itself quite quickly,” says Motyka.

“It’s basically cutting and pasting its DNA constantly.” The two major

antigen markers (hyaluronidase and neuraminidase, which the N and the H stand for in the flu virus labels) exist on the surface of the influenza virus, and their function is to break down cell walls so that their genetic material can be injected into the oblivious, warm-bodied host.

“And you have, essentially, a pattern of staying the same for a couple of years, and then shifting a little, and then shifting a little more, and then every once in a while you’ll have a jump, and that’s called a major antigenic shift,” says Motyka.

When this happens, people have little immune protection against the new virus. A major antigenic shift occurred in 2009, when an N1H1 flu virus, the same particularly troublesome combination that

mily St. John Mandel’s dystopian masterpiece Station Eleven takes place after a fictional swine flu wipes out more than 99 percent of the world population within a few short days. Besides the bubonic plague, which killed at least 25 million people, the closest we’ve come to such a virulent pandemic was the 1918 “Spanish Flu,” which infected one-third of the global population and killed some 50 million people before mysteriously fizzling out by 1919.

“They actually have copies of the 1918 flu,” says Dawn Motyka, M.D., of the Ask Dr. Dawn podcast. Virus samples were extracted from the lung tissue of an Alaskan influenza victim who’d been fully preserved by

darkened 1918, emerged with a new set of genes, and killed between 123,000 and 203,000 people globally.

Similar to 1918’s pandemic, an unusually strong majority of deaths occurred in people younger than 65—between 62 and 85 percent.

The CDC estimates that since 2010, the flu has killed between 12,000 and 56,000 people annually in the U.S. While it’s still too early to tell what exactly the 2017-2018 flu season will look like, trivalent vaccines (which include H1N1, H3N2 and B Victoria) and quadrivalent vaccines (which includes the addition of the B Yamagata strain) are estimated to be about 40 percent effective. More importantly, says Motyka, they will lessen the duration, severity, and period of contagiousness.

It’s not just the under-2 and over-65-year-old portion of the population who should be getting the flu shot, says Motyka. It’s also important for anyone with any form of lung disease, from asthma and chronic bronchitis to any form of COPD, as well as for the smokers you may know and love.

“Because the pneumonia that people get after the flu is what kills them,” Motyka says. When influenza infects the lungs, it damages the lung’s immune system for a couple weeks, opening them up to postinfluenza pneumonia by staforius bacterium, which is a particularly nasty bug that doesn’t usually get there, she says.

“If you get that kind of pneumonia it has about a 50 percent chance of killing you,” says Motyka. “Even if you get hospitalized, and you get the appropriate treatment, if you’re over 65 and get post-flu pneumonia, it’s really aggressive.” Flu combined with pneumonia was the eighth leading cause of death in 2014, according to the CDC. In the case of any sort of super flu, the N95 face mask—yes, like the one you may have purchased during the latest bout of wildfires, but were too embarrassed to wear in public—can effectively filter out the flu virus.

“Everyone should keep one in their car,” says Motyka, “and in flu season, don’t be afraid to pull it out and put it on.”

This past October, Santa Cruz lit up under a cloak of seasonal black and orange— nope, not Halloween. And definitely not the Giants. The monarch butterflies have returned to Santa Cruz.

This year’s numbers are up a few thousand, says veteran Natural Bridges State Park interpreter Martha Nitzberg. Even though it’s early in the season, she estimates there are already about 9,000 monarchs fluttering about their designated preserve, located at the state park. Last year’s population of 3,500 represented an all-time low.

“It’s better now than in a bunch of years.

It’s exciting to see so many butterflies so early in the year,” Nitzberg told me last month.

Be that as it may, the number of Natural Bridges’ overwintering butterflies is still down more than 95 percent since 1997, and the Tasmanian blue gum eucalyptus canopy that has sheltered generations of butterflies is falling apart.

Extremely sensitive to changes in weather and habitat, as well as to toxins in the environment, monarchs migrate up and down North America, with thousands coming to the local eucalyptus grove, which is nestled in a small canyon. Eucalyptus trees have small leaves that are thin enough for monarchs to wrap their feet around. For longer than anyone can remember, those trees have also provided the butterflies a convenient food source and a haven during the winter months, like a warm blanket or an umbrella to protect them from the wind and rain. But the blanket at Natural Bridges is becoming worn, frayed, and tired.

Monarch populations at the state park began declining precipitously in 1997, Nitzberg says, which is also when the oncereliable eucalyptus curtain began coming down. “Our grove started losing trees in the early 2000s,” she recalls, with much of the damage during some violent wind storms in the ’90s.

A few years later, pitch canker—a pine tree-killing disease—infected the vast majority of Monterey pine trees at the state park, eliminating the windbreak from the park and putting more strain on >16

W

hen rock climber Chris Sharma finds himself suspended over the water, clinging from a precarious cliff overhanging violent waves, he knows exactly what the stakes are. As he clambers his way up, searching for the right path, Sharma almost always feels his grip start to slip. He pushes off the rock, yelling at the top of his lungs, before splashing into the surf below, and then swimming back to the cliff to try again.

“The real danger comes when trying to get out of the water,” says Sharma, a Santa Cruz native who is considered by many to be the world’s best rock climber.

Sharma has travelled the world, pioneering some of the most difficult routes on Earth. One of his favorite spots is Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands off the eastern coast of Spain, where he grew as a climber, clinging to the chief features central to his life—the mountainous cliffs and the sea.

“It’s brought me back to the ocean,” Sharma says. “In Mallorca, there is this mixing of two environments that are so important to me.”

Sharma stars in a new film called Above the Sea, a part of the 12th annual installment of the traveling adventure film festival Reel Rock, screening at the Rio Theatre at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10

(see page 48). The film chronicles Sharma’s adventures in deep-water soloing, a type of climbing where the participant climbs difficult routes ropes-free, relying only on the water below to provide safe harbor in the event of a fall.

“Climbing without a rope has high consequences, and I never really did it, because you have to climb far below your limits to ensure safety,” Sharma says. “I have always dedicated myself to climbing at the edge of what is humanly possible.

To do this, you have to be able to fall over and over again. With deep water soloing, it enables you to try things at the edge of what is possible.”

NEWS CLIFF HANGER <12 mentality to analyze swells, tides and wind direction in order to plan and execute his latest climb—all skills that he honed growing up by the beach, playing in the breaks and along the bluffs.

“Growing up in Santa Cruz, with a connection to the ocean, it differentiates me and gives me a unique advantage with this type of climbing. It’s second nature to me,” Sharma says.

Among climbers, what sets Sharma apart is a blend of his rock-solid fundamentals and sheer physical strength that lets him glom onto the slenderest of rock holds, even while balancing on tiny crystals that are often vertical and overhanging.

“What really sticks out to me about Chris, aside from his genetic gifts, is his mental approach,” says Tom Davis,

the founder and co-owner of Pacific Edge Climbing Gym, off Murray Street.

“He has this Zen-like abandon and capacity to fire on all cylinders.”

Davis remembers the day Sharma first walked into Pacific Edge— within three months of the gym’s opening in 1993.

Sharma, born in 1981, always knew he had athletic gifts, but traditional team sports weren’t for him, and neither was surfing, which he says he was “really bad” at. He’s still grateful, he adds, to Davis for opening Pacific Edge.

“With climbing, it just clicked,” Sharma says. “I was probably the first generation of kids who wouldn’t have found climbing without a gym.”

At age 14, just two years after walking into Pacific Edge, Sharma won the U.S. Bouldering Championship.

At 15, Sharma bagged the first-ever

ascent of an Arizona climb called Necessary Evil—at the time, widely considered the most technically difficult rock climb in North America.

As the sport burgeoned in popularity, Sharma became the young climber to watch in a crowded field.

Closer to home, Sharma continued honing his craft on the boulders in Castle Rock State Park, nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains off Skyline Boulevard, near Highway 9, where Sharma remembers establishing some of the park’s modern climbs. The experience taught him to have the imagination to envision aggressive climbing lines where none existed before.

“It’s always been a talent of mine, to identify these beautiful lines that exist out in nature, and it was Castle Rock that really helped me unlock that potential,” he says. >18

Michael Brian Baker says that growing up, we naturally connect to something special.

“Innately as children, we are the frequency of love,” says Baker, a founding member of the Breath Center in Ojai, California. “And most of the things we do—whether it’s the cars we drive or the clothes we buy—are about seeking acknowledgement and love.”

Baker is coming to Capitola’s new Breath+Oneness yoga studio on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, for a session of breathwork at Holistic Veterans’ annual Community Healing Project, and he wants people to get more in touch with the importance of love.

Baker says his sessions can be a lot for some newcomers to take in, but that others leave feeling rejuvenated. Videos online show participants holding hands, and sometimes they find themselves weeping, laughing or crying out—and he

swears it’s all more than hot air.

Baker says he focuses the sessions around a sense of “orchestrated epiphany,” and loosely bases his breathing rituals on South American medicine ceremonies, although he skips the traditional drugs (which are illegal in the United States, anyway). “We’ve created a massive healing ceremony where people can come in and feel the experience without having to ingest any medicine,” Baker explains. “The breath and/ or the individual becomes the medicine and their own healing.”

Baker traveled the world when he was younger, looking for a deeper sense of wisdom.

He remembers meeting monks with such spiritual awareness that he says it felt to him like they had unique powers.

“I thought, ‘Wow, there are these people from the Far East who developed what seemed to me to be superhero powers through years of meditation, like the kung fu movies from when we were kids,” Baker says.

He moved back to Southern California, where he helped open a yoga studio and got to know Santa Cruz native and Dharma Punx author Noah Levine.

Baker says he found this healing breath by accident, and has watched it work wonders for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, psychological trauma, addiction, depression and even severe physical injuries. His session, he says, can provide as much healing in 90 minutes as some festivals and forums do in an entire week.

“It moves energy internally that you normally couldn’t get moving with any physical exercise,” he says. “It also ignites the vascular system of consciousness, which is a nonductory system, meaning you can’t take a picture of it.”

He says he’s even seen it help people going through difficult transitions like divorce. “It will accelerate that process in such a beautiful way—a gentle, gentle way,” Baker says.

The Nov. 11 Community Healing Project will also feature other sessions, including a drum circle, yoga and live music from Holistic Veterans founder Paul Damon. Health care practitioners will set up outside the studio.

“There are practices, like this breath, that will reenergize, get brain plasticity increased, get brain activity really moving again,” Baker says. “That’s the magic behind the Breath Center. Spread the love. That’s literally what we’re doing. When there’s more of that and less worry, less focus on what’s not working, then we can begin to shift things, not only in our own lives, but in our life experience and what’s going on around us.”

the eucalyptus. “Our grove is getting old,” says State Parks volunteer Abby Pulman.

“Trees are falling down, and the grove is not as protected.”

For decades, Nitzberg and others pushed to plant more eucalyptus trees around the park to protect monarchs’ overwintering, a debate she’s reticent to rehash. “It’s a touchy subject,” Nitzberg says. “I need to be politically correct.”

The blue gum eucalyptus is officially classified as a “moderate” invasive species, and some groups, like the California Native Plant Society, don’t want any of it at state parks—or pretty much anywhere else for that matter, even to refortify a butterfly grove.

A few months ago, Nitzberg and her colleagues did score a win in the debate, as staffers will be allowed to plant a threetree windblock of eucalyptus trees to reinforce the grove.

of the California Native Plant Society, used to be a docent at Natural Bridges, and remembers the situation being complicated. Gluesenkamp, who later managed a monarch grove at Stinson Beach in Marin County, says that although their size may seem like an advantage, eucalyptus trees can actually grow too tall and block out the sun, which butterflies need in order to thermoregulate.

Brett Hall, vice president of the Sacramento-based nonprofit, adds in a follow-up email that it’s impossible to know all of the factors at play. “Monarchs have been crashing everywhere, from other reasons beyond the degradation of the euc grove,” he writes.

Also, even a healthy grove of eucalyptus trees would not protect monarchs from a more existential threat: a parasite called Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, or “OE,” as it is known among butterfly enthusiasts. OE weakens the insects, often leaving them deformed

and unable to fly as far or as long as healthy butterflies.

Scientists estimate that OE has infected 30 percent of the western migratory population.

It’s the latest crisis to strike an already battered species, and the situation on the Central Coast is serious. Once butterflies are infected, they do not recover. The Xerces Society, a butterfly advocacy group, is monitoring its spread.

And local gardeners may be making the situation worse. Nitzberg says that many Santa Cruzans believe they are helping the monarchs by planting milkweed in their coastal gardens to feed monarchs, and the trend began with the noblest of intentions.

After all, the milkweed plant provides all of the nourishment a monarch needs to transform from caterpillar into butterfly.

Milkweed plants were even sold at the Natural Bridges Migration Festivals for years.

Attendees were encouraged to buy $1 plants to “save the monarchs” and plant milkweed

in their yards to create “butterfly corridors.”

But the overly abundant milkweed has turned into a host for OE. These days, park workers don’t sell plants, and they discourage anyone within five miles of the coast from planting milkweed, because plants closer to the ocean are particularly susceptible. The flowery plant also disrupts monarchs’ iconic annual migration, when there’s too much of it, leaving them stuck in Santa Cruz year round eating the OE-infested plant grub.

If milkweed proliferates in the monarch wintering grounds, many butterflies won’t migrate at all. The butterflies will lay their eggs year round in Santa Cruz, overstaying their welcome.

Nitzberg discovered a large number of caterpillars this past summer in Santa Cruz County, and she’s begun questioning the status of the entire monarch migration.

“We don’t want them to hang in Santa Cruz for the summer,” she says. “They need to leave for the summer.”

NEWS CLIFF HANGER <14 Those skills came in handy in 2007, when Sharma moved to Spain, where he continued to be creative about discovering and establishing new lines. Sharma grabbed headlines when he climbed the hardest deepwater soloing line in the world on the fabled Es Pontas, a natural arch that protrudes from the rollicking Mediterranean Sea just off the southeastern coast.

But as he pushed boundaries physically, Sharma found himself always on the road.

“It’s a great lifestyle, but it can be exhausting,” he says. “I wanted to find a way to live in one place and climb. For me, it all connected on my first trip to Mallorca.”

For Sharma, the island of Mallorca will forever contain a personal dimension that exceeds the purely athletic pursuits of his climbing career. He finished his 2007 climb with a heavy heart, as his mother Ghita Jahn had just passed away.

His latest climb in September of last year was equally difficult, as documented in the new film, and represents yet another climbing triumph, one coinciding with the birth of his daughter, Alana, which took place in June of last year. He named the climb Alasha, a mash-up of his daughter’s first and last names.

“The climb represented an equally groundbreaking connection to my daughter,” he says. “It’s amazing how we come full circle in our lives. For me, these two climbs happened parallel to this opportunity for reinvention.”

At 36, Sharma looks at his career— both his accomplishments and his future goals—with a meditative sense of calmness that’s uncommon in his hyper-competitive field.

Sharma recently opened a climbing gym in Barcelona with his wife, Jimena Alarcon. He still gets back to Santa Cruz about three or four times a year, he says. Many of the friends who helped him pioneer routes at Castle Rock still live in the area, as does his father, Bob. “I want to keep pushing the limits and finding beautiful things, finding ways to inspire people and share this great sport,” he says. “It’s been an honor to be a part of the evolution of rock climbing.”

A policy shift in the SCPD has led to an encampment in San Lorenzo Park that makes some locals nervous, but has others believing it could point the way toward better solutions for Santa Cruzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homeless issues BY ANDREA PATTON

M

ack Palmer, a softspoken 43-year-old man who struggles to get around, was one of the first people to move to the benchlands area of San Lorenzo Park after a citywide effort to clear the downtown post office of homeless campers living there. Before that, Palmer slept by the library, and before that, near Santa Cruz City Hall.

Occupy Santa Cruz, an offshoot of the larger Occupy protests that began on Wall Street, was started in San Lorenzo Park in the fall of 2011 by twentysomethings who said they were fed up with corporate abuses and a financial

Boy, that’s worked well.” -SCPD CHIEF ANDY MILLS system that protected institutions it deemed “too big to fail.” That camp’s main hub was above the benchlands and closer to the Santa Cruz County Government Center than the current one. As it swelled in size over time, Occupy Santa Cruz—like similar movements in other cities—grew into a gathering place for local homeless in search of safety and community. Unsubstantiated rumors spread through the media about a disease outbreak, and feces dumped on the other side of the river. Not long after, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department served the campers with an eviction notice. A day later, before dawn on Tuesday, Dec. 6, officers from all over the county, dressed in riot gear, rousted the remaining campers.

Adams says the Occupy camp was vastly different from the current situation, and City Manager Martín Bernal, who’s been with the city for 20 years, agrees. “First, the numbers were much bigger,” Bernal says.

“The purpose was totally different, and the situation was totally different in terms of what caused it to come into existence.”

In the six years since, city leaders, along with local nonprofits and clubs, have taken steps to make both the San Lorenzo River and park more inviting to Santa Cruz residents and visitors, in the name of “activating” the area. The Public Works Department installed lighting on part of the lower part of the riverwalk, and opened a new footbridge. Parks and Recreation workers installed a nine-hole disc golf course on the benchlands in 2012 with the help of the Delaveaga Disc Golf Club, hoping that if sports enthusiasts were there throwing

discs, it would dissuade the homeless from hanging out.

Sean O’Neill, president for Delaveaga Disc Golf Club, says the course never got much use, though, for two reasons: design and safety.

He says players often found trash and syringes littered about. “It’s not exactly a place that an experienced golfer is looking to play because of its simplicity, and it’s not that inviting. It’s geared more toward a beginner player, and it makes it harder to, say, introduce children to disc golf at a place where you can potentially find needles,” he says.

RIGHT TO SLEEP Mills says he made his announcement out of a sense that it’s the right thing to do, both morally and for the good of the whole community.

“My personal belief system—as well as [what] the courts are ruling fairly consistently—[is] that people have a right to sleep,” says Mills, who’s been chief of the Santa Cruz Police Department since August.

“And so I want to make sure we are treating people well. I think people are healthier, make better decisions, have the potential of getting out of some of the circumstances they are in, when they have sleep. I couldn’t imagine being in a place where I could sleep for one hour at a time, in the cold with yelling and screaming and all the other things that happen in that environment. Sleeping on rocks, or sidewalks, or bus benches.”

Mills, 60, adds that, at his age, it’s hard enough for him to sleep in a bed.

Adams, who is also executive director of the Warming Center, sees uninterrupted sleep and

local homeless advocate. “He's huge and dark, yet upon speaking with him, he’s soft and quite vulnerable.”

Sitting on his collapsed green tent, with a towel covering one of his bare feet, Palmer tells me that he has been living outside for three-and-a-half years, since his downtown apartment was foreclosed on, and he was evicted. He briefly moved in with his mom, who was sick and appreciated his help in taking care of her, Palmer says, but her landlord informed them that they were breaking U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) rules, so he was out on the street.

“I haven’t been stable since,” he says.

Until recently, he was sleeping on concrete with only a sleeping bag.

His living conditions have improved since being allowed to set up a tent at night and take it down during the day, in cooperation with a new moratorium on the sleeping ban that SCPD chief Andy Mills announced in a GT op-ed last month. In the days that followed, many others set up camp in San Lorenzo Park. The city brought in portable toilets, wash basins and extra trash cans.

Palmer has high blood pressure and sleep apnea. Last year when it started raining, he got sick three times.

“I don’t think I could do that again,” he says. “I was put in the hospital in intensive care three times. I have to sleep with a sleeping mask, but out here I can’t sleep with one. And I really need to have that, because I stop breathing.”

the allowance of tents as “rung one” of a ladder to improving the homeless situation in Santa Cruz.

He’s traveled the state touring homeless encampments three times, interviewing more than 400 people in 40 cities for Out of Sight Out of Mind, his documentary on West Coast homelessness.

“When we demonstrate dignity, people behave in more dignified ways,” says Adams, who also leads the Coalition for Homelessness and the Downtown Bathroom Task Force.

“When people are desperate, they start behaving more desperately.”

Mills will be the first to admit that the benchlands encampment is not a beauty to behold. But he says he has been closely following court rulings around homelessness. “And then the courts, and housing and urban development have given some very clear guidelines that you need to have enough beds for those who are without shelter, and until that takes place, I don’t know how I can thoughtfully and rigorously enforce a camping ban,” he says.

Mills has heard that employees working at the county building near the tents haven’t been thrilled by the current situation, and he is aware of the need to maintain a functioning city where everyone feels safe.

Jason Hoppin, Santa Cruz County’s public information officer, says there have been ancillary issues that employees have noticed.

“One of the unfortunate side effects of having that population over here is there is a subset of them that engage in behaviors that are basically unacceptable,” he says. “It’s drug use, it’s public intoxication, it’s prostitution. We’ve had employees that have witnessed those types of activities,” he says, clarifying that such activities aren’t necessarily entwined with the homeless population at large.

“They don’t necessarily go hand in hand. The law abiding homeless persons who are over there now shouldn’t have to witness that either,” he adds.

The county has added two sheriffs to patrol the area, along with increasing alarm security at the

county building. Hoppin says county workers are also in the process of removing two large storage lockers on the back lawn that he says people are hiding things under.

Mills says some of his critics have doubts about his approach, although they don’t always address the chief directly, and that members of Take Back Santa Cruz have been particularly vocal.

“There are those who think I’m enabling,” Mills says. “They want to see rigorous enforcement on the homeless. What does that look like? We’ve written thousands of tickets, literally, for camping. Boy, that’s worked well. I’m much more concerned with effectiveness than efficiency. I can write thousands of tickets, but if it’s not doing any good, then let’s figure out something else to do.”

After Mills’ announcement, one Take Back Santa Cruz member wrote on Facebook, “Poor SanLo park and those families that try and enjoy it.”

Another complained about police officers shooing away some suspicious drugged-out men carrying nice leather purses who he felt should have been questioned. “I give up, no more calling police,” the man wrote, tagging Chief Mills.

Analicia Cube, who started Take Back Santa Cruz nine years ago with her sister and friend who are also mothers, says Mills absolutely got pushback on their site, because many of its 17,000 members are scared and disturbed by the situation, and don’t see the San Lorenzo encampment as a viable alternative.

But what Mills is bringing to the table is at least an attempt at a real solution, she says.

“Our children and our elders are afraid to wander the streets,” Cube says. “We have to just believe. I know it’s going to be really hard for everyone, and I know that after everything we’ve been through, and the compassion fatigue we’re all feeling, that this right here is just another ask. But for the first time, I feel like somebody else is asking me. At least it’s something new, it’s not, ‘oh, it’s OK. Just keep

So for now, Mills has Cube’s wary support. “As long as the chief is prepared to show us some positive outcomes and get us to checkmate, then I believe that Take Back Santa Cruz supports him 100 percent,” she says.

This is the kind of dialogue that Mills wants to see. He’s glad that his op-ed piece started a conversation about the issue.

“This battle is taking place of ‘what do we do with these people,’ and some of this is kinda forcing us to have that conversation as a community,” Mills says. “I think people are so entrenched in their minds, they’re not willing to listen about homeless issues. Everybody has their little stake in the ground and if you pull that stake out, you feel like you’re giving ground.

Well, that’s not necessarily the case. People say, ‘I want rigorous enforcement.’ Okay, wait a second here … so rigorous enforcement,

but just on the homeless, not on everybody else. Now wait a second, that doesn’t make any sense to anybody, does it? It doesn’t to me.

We’re going to take one class of people, the poorest of the poor, and we are going to do rigorous enforcement on them?”

FUTURE TENTS As clouds roll in and the rainy season gets underway, no one can say for sure how long the encampment—or the relaxed enforcement—will be around.

If SCPD receives a complaint from a property owner, officers will still enforce the ban on a case-by-case basis. Mills says he is concerned for everyone’s safety, including that of the families who use San Lorenzo Park, especially, up by the playground. And as much as he might mock “rigorous enforcement” for a class of citizen, he says he is certain to employ it for crimes and behavioral issues. “Defecating, urinating, stealing, smoking dope downtown, spreading trash all over the driveway of Wells Fargo, that

All of those things are amazing, and I celebrate them,” Adams says. “And yet, whether the police department or the city does it or not, this will become uninhabitable at some point. But what is the plan? My organization has lots of plans. Lots of ideas. Can we work with the city on those? I hope so.”

SLEEPING BAGGED Adams has followed recommendations from the city’s Homeless Coordinating Committee as closely as anyone, getting the word out about the list of 20 ideas and suggesting modifications.

Mills and the county are both on board with the recommendations to get people a day-use facility where the homeless can receive services designed to get them out of homelessness and participate in constructive activities while addressing mental health or addiction as well as hygiene.

The questions are how to do that, and who will foot the bill. The city points to the county and state as typically being providers of health and human services. Hoppin, on the other hand, points to cities like Los Angeles, which set aside $176 million of their own dollars to address their much larger homeless population.

“Relying on the state to pay for everything is somewhat of a fool’s errand,” Hoppin says. “I think there’s going to have to be some skin in the game locally to get this done.

We don’t know what the funding formula is going to look like yet, but like I said, it’s a good thing that everybody is moving in the same direction.”

Hoppin, who works with County Administrative Officer Carlos Palacios, says he’s still waiting from the city for a clearer indication of the next steps in the process. “We are not alerted to what the city’s plans are, and we still don’t have a handle on what their plans are, what’s their exit strategy here, where this is going.

We’ve been meeting with them and asking for that. We don’t have a clear

doesn’t work. I completely get that,” he says.

He’ll also be waiting to see what happens when the winter shelter opens on Nov. 15. If many beds go unused, Mills may take another look at the moratorium. “That changes the perspective a little bit,” he says. “If there’s 100-plus beds and people aren’t taking them, then perhaps enforcement does become a significant option, so people need to avail themselves of the help that’s available to them, and we’ll do everything we can to point people in the right direction.”

Whatever the future of the benchlands in the short term, Bernal says San Lorenzo Park won’t work as a permanent encampment.

“It’s a facility that gets used for events, so people can’t be there all the time anyway. The uses aren’t compatible with what’s there. And it floods in the winter, so it’s not a good long-term solution. We need a more permanent solution. We’re working on that,” Bernal says.

While traveling the West Coast, Adams has seen all kinds of so-called “tent cities”—including ones in areas like Los Angeles, where people are allowed to sleep outside in tents any place that isn’t privately owned.

“The problem with an encampment with no rules, no boundaries and admitted use of illegal addictive substances,” Adams says, “is that there may begin to be dangerous interactions based on the acquisition of substances and the means to afford them, which can include illegal, coercive, and exploitive behavior.”

Adams points out that so far, things at San Lorenzo Park have been surprisingly peaceful and he says the number of overdoses have been declining in the park. He sees the encampment as surprisingly successful, but believes there are ways it could be improved by developing clean, safe and dignifying sanctuary-type camp programs, safe parking programs and authentic, safe sleep zones.

Mark Hemersbach, a 58-year-old Santa Cruz resident of 35 years, has been homeless for two years. “It only took 10 days to go from heaven to hell,” he says. He’s been living in a tent at the benchlands for the last six months. <25 picture yet,” he says, noting that there’s no evidence that homeless people are drawn to services from out of the area.

Palmer, the homeless man who’s been on the streets since being evicted from his apartment, has a Section 8 housing voucher that is set to expire next month. Jenny Panetta, executive director of the Santa Cruz County Housing Authority, said at a meeting last month that about half of voucher holders aren’t able to find housing before their Section 8 expires.

Palmer faces many challenges as he searches, including what to do with his few belongings while he is away from them so that they don’t get stolen. He would like to stay close to his mom in Santa Cruz, but there are fewer low-income housing options in North County, and so he says he will probably have to move to Watsonville.

Storage facilities are one of the short-term fixes that the city’s recommendations identified as a need. Bernal says some steel shipping containers and plastic bins that the city ordered for this purpose have arrived, and they’re being set up on the city’s parcel on River Street that served as a staging center for the winter shelter last year. Adams has been pushing for storage containers in several of the spots where homeless people already congregate to make it easier for them to use the facilities. Adams would also like to see a mobile shower trailer where people can get clean, part of an idea he calls “popup homeless services.”

FALLING THROUGH THE CRACKS Mark Hemersbach, a 58-year-old Santa Cruz resident of 35 years, has been homeless for two years.

He’s been living in a tent at the benchlands for the last six months, after what he calls a “set of bad circumstances” involving the collapse of his marble and stone contracting business, he says, when a large developer didn’t pay the bills and he didn’t have the resources to fight them in court.

“It only took 10 days to go from heaven to hell,” Hemersbach says.

He had 25 employees and had invested his life savings in the company. Hemersbach says that a nearby storage facility would help provide homeless people some peace of mind, while cutting down on theft from a population that doesn’t have much to their name to begin with.

“It would give the people a sense of organization if they can maintain it, and in the end it would give people a little more hope,” he says.

These days, Hemersbach has become something of a mediator among the community benchlands, sometimes settling disputes, and other times organizing morning cleanup efforts to make sure the camp stays as tidy as possible. “We don’t want to be an eyesore for the public,” he says. “We understand this is a park. It’s not supposed to look like a run down beat-up litterbox, and we don’t want it to look that way.”

Both your mother, Annalee Jacoby Fadiman, and your father were famous writers. How did they influence your path?

It wasn’t hard for me to imagine becoming a writer, since I’d seen my father make a living from it, and I knew that before I was born, my mother had been a well-known journalist—the only woman war correspondent in China. In other words, writers didn’t seem to starve.

And my father worked at home.

It was like living over the family store—you see how it’s done. My mother was the bigger influence when I wrote my first book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, a work of reportage. My father was an essayist, so he was the bigger influence when I wrote my two essay collections, Ex Libris and At Large and At Small. But it took me a long time to feel able to write essays, because that was his territory.

Wine became a big part of your father’s life and self-image. What did it mean to him, both personally and culturally?

He truly loved the taste of wine, and had a fine palate, the kind that can effortlessly discriminate among vintages. Wine also symbolized the kind of life he’d aspired to when he was growing up poor in Brooklyn.

Not that he’d thought about wine then; he’d thought only about books, his other great love and an equally powerful symbol of cultivation and refinement. But after Prohibition, when he could buy wine legally

in the United States, starting a wine cellar not only let him bring something he loved into his life, but also seemed like the sort of thing a gentleman would do.

You write that even though your father experienced success, he still sometimes felt like an outsider.

Why did he feel that way and how did he cope with it?

Like many successful people who grew up without money, he always felt he was imitating a gentleman rather than being the real thing.

He felt particularly inauthentic when he was an old man, because his childhood memories seemed more and more real, and his adult achievements less and less real every year. His insecurity both motivated his work—I’m certain that he wouldn’t have accomplished as much had he been more self-confident—and made him exasperatingly self-deprecating.

You’re the wine lover’s daughter, but not a lover of wine yourself.

After a lifetime of wondering if my inability to love wine made me an inferior human being, I visited a couple of taste scientists and did some laboratory and genetic tests, from which I learned that biology was to blame. I just don’t have the same palate as my father. However, I wouldn’t and couldn’t have written The Wine Lover’s Daughter unless I loved wine as a subject, much as my father did. The history of wine has tremendous cultural resonance for me, not to mention the fact that it reminds me of my father.

Despite fewer music programs in schools, Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony thrives BY CHRISTINA WATERS After 10 measures of Beethoven, he stops them to make a particular point about phrasing.

“It’s just a little bit slow,” he tells one section of the chambersized orchestra, composed of 26 players—brass, woodwinds, harp, and percussion balanced by 12 violins, violas, and cellos.

Next, another crucial passage.

“Let’s start at measure 125,” Berman says. The sound swells to fill the rehearsal room. Now it all slows down to work out the kinks. It’s all about fine-tuning the difficult passages so that in performance the entire musical selection will flow from start to finish.

“For a conductor working with young musicians, one of the biggest

challenges is actually helping them develop the ability to use their musical tools—like technique, musicianship, and expression— in coordination with their ears and eyes,” explains Berman. “No amount of artful gesture on the part of the conductor can make that happen. So instead, we talk about these things and do them again, and again, and again.”

They are playing a very famous movement of Beethoven’s 5th right now, the “da da da DUM” part. They sound exactly like a symphony orchestra. “153—one more time,” Berman says with a smile, then raises his hands and gives them a downbeat.

he triumphant thunder of Beethoven’s 5th symphony is the first order of business.

It’s the next-to-last rehearsal before the Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony’s fall concert, and finetuning is the name of the game.

Music Director Nathaniel Berman—a respected Bay Area conductor and member of UCSC’s Music faculty—takes the small podium and announces the areas that need work that evening. Two dozen sets of teenaged eyes follow his guidance with laser focus. He reminds them of tempo and balance of volume among instrumental sections. They respond. He demonstrates by singing the pitches and tempos. They respond.

smoothing out glitches, to then playing through the entire sections.

The focus is absolute. The director hums and sings and practically pulls the phrases from individual sections. The strings sound quite beautiful, melting yet powerful.

“Pick up to 254,” he says, pointing to 16-year-old Mia Balsley, who begins her lovely oboe solo. “Playing with the youth symphony has taught me to challenge myself, as a musician and as a person,” she admits. “I just love the atmosphere and am grateful to be able to play with others who enjoy music as much as I do,” says the young musician who began playing oboe only two years ago.

“OK guys, let’s play it through,” Berman says after some final tinkering. “I love seeing the young players’ pride and satisfaction in their work,” he tells me, admitting frustration with the current state of music education. “With very few schools offering string programs of any kind now, and fewer band programs than there were in past years, there are simply far fewer kids taking up instrumental music,” says Berman.

This group of students is a notable exception. “Commit to the piece,” he encourages them. “Don’t be afraid to make a mistake!”

I’m frankly amazed. These are teenagers, yet they are completely engaged. No shuffling, no whispering—complete focus. The musical dynamics are impressive.

“The satisfaction of seeing the kids mature and identify as musicians is really profound,” says Berman, who urges them to “play light!” at an unforgiving moment.

“Again!” They repeat the tricky part.

He nods. “Again!” They play it again, better. And one more time, until it’s perfect and crisp. After an hour and a quarter of exhausting focus, they will break for 15 minutes, and then continue on for another hour.

Afterall, they have a concert to play.

Lewis Rogers of Busman’s Holiday explains why the former busking duo went orchestral BY AARON CARNES

L

ewis Rogers isn’t used to being struck suddenly by creative inspiration. But he was hit with some a couple years ago while his band Busman’s Holiday, for which he sings and plays guitar, was on tour.

He imagined a complete song with an orchestral section, and wanted to record it as soon as possible.

“It kind of overtook me. I was very excited. I was like, ‘We’ve got to make this next album, and we’ve got to have a 21-piece orchestra,” says Rogers.

The song in question is called “See the Rain,” and Busman’s Holiday did in fact record it with a 21-piece orchestra. It’s a moody, gorgeous

track that brings to mind some of the more eclectic songs in Randy Newman’s ’70s catalog.

The song was released last fall on Popular Cycles, the third album for the Bloomington, Indiana-based duo that also consists of Rogers’ brother Addison, who sings and plays drums.

Normally, Busman’s Holiday songs consist of some acoustic guitar, a suitcase drum set and some harmonies. But this time the duo overdubbed a lot of instruments; not every song has a 21-piece orchestra, but many have string quartets and/ or horn sections. In other words, it’s by far the most ambitious thing the brothers have ever recorded.

“I think the earlier things are just like I felt good about what we had.

I think it’s why those old records are so sparse. You don’t want to ruin something. It’s so easy to add crap. Cycles felt like, ‘let’s get more instruments on there, because we can do this,’” Rogers says.

The group spent many years writing, recording, and touring as a two-piece.

Many of their early gigs, which date back to Rogers’ teen years, were on the street corner, and not in venues.

“It was good conditioning ’cause it feels like you have to sing loud and you have to project,” he says. “You have to have songs that will make people stop. You figure out which

songs are the ones that make people stop. It’s a really good way to kind of learn how to entertain people really quickly, which I think has been pretty valuable for us.”

But there was a downside to cutting their teeth in the busking realm. Like a theater actor trying to adjust his or her skill set to the big screen, Busman’s Holiday slowly came to realize that some of the things that were off-limits when playing for spare change were useful for creating a nuanced record.

“It was only recently that I felt like I could sing quieter than as powerfully as I could. It took me a long time to realize that I didn’t always have to sing at full volume,” Rogers says.

It clicked by the time they went to record Popular Cycles, which is a tender, emotive record. The weaving of strings and horns punctuates stirring melodies. For this record, they allowed themselves to take some time and explore everything they could do to make the songs better, even if that meant re-writing parts in the studio.

“Getting the right textures, I find, is really important to making a good album. We spent so much time thinking about what’s going to go on it, what’s going to go on top of the stuff,” Rogers says.

The group still tours a lot, though they favor clubs these days over bustling city streets. However, they can’t take a 21-piece orchestra out on the road with them—and they don’t want to. They haven’t decided exactly what their live band this tour will be like, but they do know it’ll be much more stripped down than the record. The focus will be on the core melodies and chords—Addison, for the record, still plays a suitcase drum set.

“We try to make sure the melodies are strong enough, where hopefully if you just hear the melody even, it’ll carry the song enough,” Rogers says.

“Hopefully, any way someone hears it they’ll be happy. I feel like it’s the melody and the lyrics. And hopefully giving it a good enough performance where you feel like you weren’t robbed of an experience.”

In 1994, Richard Moore, aka DJ Daddy Spleece, fell in love with reggae. It didn’t just become his favorite music, it became his obsession.

“I was like, ‘that’s it for me. That’s all I’m going to listen to. That’s all I’m going to play,’” Moore says.

At the time, Moore was living in Fresno. In the coming years, he became a prominent reggae/ dancehall DJ, playing pretty much anything from Jamaica. He got weekly reggae shows going at various clubs pretty much every night of the week, and would bring live reggae bands to town. In other words, he helped create a serious reggae scene.

When he moved to Santa Cruz nine years ago, he didn’t need to build a scene—venues like Moe’s had been doing that for years. Fortunately for him, the demand for reggae music here is high. He spins at various events in town—usually at Moe’s—hosts a weekly reggae radio show on KZSC every Tuesday morning, and even maintains the website santacruzreggae.com.

“Since moving to Santa Cruz, I fell back in love with roots,” he says. “I really focus there as far as the radio goes.”

PATRICIA BARBER TRIO Over the past 25 years, Patricia Barber has carved out a singular niche on the jazz scene as a skilled

pianist whose keyboard work adds considerable drama to her low-affect vocals. An incisive interpreter of standards and more contemporary pop tunes, she’s often at her best singing her own poetically charged material, including songs inspired

by Greek mythology written with the support of a Guggenheim Fellowship.

A resident artist in Chicago’s illustrious club the Green Mill (her latest release is the digital-only album Monday Night Live at the Green Mill, Volume 3), she’s performing with her highly sympathetic trio, featuring drummer Jon Deitemyer and bassist Patrick Mulcahy, top Chicago cats.

AMINÉ Up-and-coming rapper Aminé has bars and he has hooks, but what really seems to set him apart is his ability to mix silly humor with uncomfortable truths. The video for “Redmercedes” has the unsettling aesthetic of the rapper going to a car dealership wearing whiteface, dressed in Ivy League clothing, and being treated as thugs by the “racist” black salesman. Apart from being odd and hilarious, it makes a strong point about racism. Now in its 60th season, the Santa Cruz Symphony presents Embracing the Dance, a concert showcasing the work of celebrated American composers John Adams and Leonard Bernstein, as well as Ludwig van Beethoven. The program begins with Adams’ 13-minute long “Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra” from 1985. It continues with Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from the West Side Story score, and concludes with Beethoven’s 7th symphony, the 40-minute long masterpiece that includes a funeral march as well as moments of levity and joy. Three outdoor adventure film festivals converge on Santa Cruz this weekend BY GEORGIA JOHNSON

rom Cowtown to the island of Mallorca, next weekend will likely be the most allencompassing three days of the year for environmental short filmmaking in Santa Cruz. Telluride’s Mountainfilm on Tour and the Save the Waves Film Festival, along with much-anticipated debut of Reel Rock 12, fall within days of each other, spanning from sea to sky and featuring almost every outdoor activity you can think of.

The fact that these festivals all are happening in a single weekend demonstrates how much demand there is right now for the films—which may be best-known for featuring adventurers and athletes doing really badass stuff outdoors, but also seek to promote

environmental awareness.

The Trump presidency is a grim time for environmental literacy and protection. Twenty-seven national land and marine monuments are pending review under Trump’s administration, and the U.S. Department of the Interior is working to shrink protection borders around several national monuments, including Utah’s Bears Ears, to open more land for oil drilling.

Beyond their importance as habitats and ecosystems, many of these landmarks are destinations for the adventure sports community—and many filmmakers in that community consider this an important time for storytelling as a form of activism.

First up is the Save the Waves

International Film Festival on Thursday, Nov. 9., at the Patagonia Outlet. It will screen 15 films spanning four continents, and examine how to protect coastlines, oceans and wildlife— all accompanied by some really stunning surfing footage. Over nine years, the festival has continued to grow steadily.

“You have to walk a fine line between rattling people’s cages, and not leaving them with a sense of hopelessness,” says Trey Highton, Save the Waves Film Festival Director. “With technology and social media today, people’s attention spans are shorter; so if we are able to put an impactful, meaningful message into a highly visual consumable and entertaining

format, that’s the most impactful way to get a message out.”

Reel Rock 12 has had climbers and non climbers alike across the world gripping their seats in anticipation for months. It’s screening at more than 100 locations worldwide, and comes to the Rio Theatre the day after the Save the Waves film festival. The tour will feature short films, starring, among others, Santa Cruz native and pro climber Chris Sharma and rock star 19-year-old Margo Hayes—the first woman to complete a 5.15a-grade climb, one of the highest level climbs for both men and women. Of Reel Rock 12’s four films, two feature women. Hayes, and Maureen Beck, a woman who climbs extremely difficult routes with only one arm while shotgunning beers—to say she’s a badass lady is an understatement.

“Our culture and society has grown accustomed to a male-dominant industry and now people want to see a little more equality and more women in film,” says Mountainfilm on Tour Director Crystal Merrill. “In the last two years, I have seen a pretty big change and way more women in films and filmmaking.”

The Mountainfilm on Tour hails from Telluride, where it has screened a mish-mosh of mountain-themed films annually since 1979. Following its hometown showing of more than 100 documentary-based films, the nonprofit then hits the road, stopping at more than 150 locations worldwide, including Santa Cruz on Saturday, Nov. 11. The hope is to inspire a greater appreciation and understanding of the environment and our impacts.

“Coming to Santa Cruz is like coming home for us, because we have an audience that is really supportive and gets it,” Merrill says.

“But what’s important for us to focus on [are] audiences that don’t get it, that don’t understand what it’s like to have access to public lands in your backyard or realize what it’s like to almost lose those.”

FILM NEW THIS WEEK DADDY’S HOME 2 Somebody out there must have been really naughty this year if Santa thought moviegoers deserved both Daddy’s Home 2 and A Bad Moms Christmas this holiday season.

They are, of course, essentially the same movie; this one brings in the dads of the first movie’s dads (instead of the moms of the first movie’s moms) to try to milk a second film out of a dumb premise. Mel Gibson and John Lithgow join original feuding dads Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell.

Lawick’s footage had been stored away in the National Geographic archives and forgotten about for more than half a century, and along with new interviews of Goodall, brings some close-up insight into her celebrated life and work. MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS It’s got to be tricky adapting one of the world’s most famous whodunit novels, almost a 100 years after its release—mainly because a lot of people already know whodunit. Especially since Agatha Christie’s 1934 book has been adapted for film, TV and even video games many times. Still, director Kenneth Branagh (who also stars as Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot) is here to give it his best shot, with an all-star cast and a stylish modern look. Costarring Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Willem Dafoe, Penelope Cruz and Michelle Pfeiffer. (PG-13) 114 minutes. (SP) NOVITIATE Neither religious herself nor laboring under any

weird issues from a religious upbringing, filmmaker Maggie Betts never imagined herself making a movie about nuns. But she says a book about Mother Theresa, which made her realize for the first time that nuns are supposed to be literally married to God, led her to write and direct this story of a young mid-century girl who is drawn into the mystery and romance she finds in the idea of convent life, but struggles with issues of faith and sexuality. (SP) BATTLE OF THE SEXES Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs’ 1973 match-up comes to the big screen in Battle of the Sexes, a thoughtful and entertaining movie about gender, identity, politics, and celebrity at a pivotal cultural moment in American history. Written by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), it was directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton—whose first film, Little Miss Sunshine, demonstrated their skill at developing sympathetic characters and tuning into the subtle absurdities of life. (PG-13) 121 minutes. (LJ) THE FLORIDA PROJECT Even good kid actors are usually more tolerable than remarkable, but Brooklynn Prince is getting glowing reviews for her performance as a six-year-old girl living with her off-thewall mother in a motel in the shadow of Walt Disney World.

She’s getting Oscar buzz, but the actress who plays her antiheroine mom, 24-year-old Bria Vinaite—who had never acted before and was discovered by director Sean Baker on Instagram—is getting even more.

Together, they’re the core of this edgy drama. Willem Dafoe costars. (R) 115 minutes. (SP) GEOSTORM What would be amazing is if all the scientists in this global disaster movie were like, “Oh no, here comes a GEOSTORM!” And then a 1993 Isuzu Geo Storm drives up, and everybody goes, “Aw, actually it’s so cute, why did we stop making them?” I emailed the producers of Geostorm like 1000 times about my idea, but they still wouldn’t let me write this movie. (SP) HAPPY DEATH DAY Whether or not you have any interest in this horror take on Groundhog Day—a teen keeps reliving the day she dies over and over until she can figure out who her killer is—I think we can all agree it’s a lock for worst title of the year. (SP) JIGSAW When asked about their approach to making a Saw film in 2017, the directors of this movie summed it as … “Saw for 2017.”

Whoa, insightful! Don’t look now, but Get Out was also “Get Out for 2017” and Suburbicon is “Suburbicon for 2017.” For future reference, citing the year that you are making a new movie for a long-dead franchise that hadn’t even been good since its original entry in 2004 is not the same as justifying the existence of that movie. Even the Jigsaw Killer himself has officially been dead for 10 years within the universe of these movies, so who knows where they’re going with this.

Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig. Starring Tobin Bell, Matt Passmore and Callum Keith Rennie. (R) 92 minutes. (SP) THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER Imagine Fatal Attraction remade by the director of bizarre arthouse hit The Lobster—with a touch of Joel Edgerton’s underrated The Gift thrown in for good measure—and you’ve got The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

Colin Farrell plays Dr. Steven Murphy, a prominent surgeon with a seemingly perfect family (including wife Nicole Kidman) and life, who takes teenaged Martin (Barry Keoghan) under his wing. Everything goes great, Martin does not act progressively creepier, and revelations from the past definitely do not threaten to shatter Murphy’s domestic bliss and rip his life apart. J/k! He totally does, and they totally do.

Johnson’s legacy—should it be more weighted toward his pioneering civil rights efforts, or his terrible mishandling of the Vietnam War? But there are far more historically pressing questions here. Like, for instance, which casting in this biopic is weirder: Woody Harrelson as LBJ, or Jennifer Jason Leigh as Lady Bird Johnson? Rob Reiner directs.

(SP) LUCKY John Carroll Lynch is Hollywood’s most unassuming Renaissance man. Probably best-known as the lovable Norm Gunderson from Fargo, his remarkable career as a character actor recently also included the absolutely terrifying Twisty the Clown in American Horror Story.

Now he makes his directorial debut with this, the late Harry Dean Stanton’s final film, in a story about a 90-year-old atheist seeking enlightenment in a quirky Texas town. If that sounds a bit like David Lynch’s The Straight Story, well, John Carroll Lynch is very up front about the inspiration—in fact, David Lynch (no relation) co-stars in this film, along with Ron Livingston, Tom Skerritt and Beth Grant. (SP) THOR: RAGNAROK Okay, it’s less about the gods of classical Norse Mythology than the Marvel Comics pantheon, but only a real killjoy would fail to get a kick out of this third installment of the Thor series. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston continue to have way too much fun with the prickly relationship between heroic Thor, God of Thunder, and sly, acerbic half-brother Loki, deliciously untrustworthy Trickster God. But — surprise! This time Hemsworth gets most of the laughs. It's all directed with a droll, light touch by Taika Waititi, who give his adroit cast plenty of room to maneuver.

ecrets to homemade pasta will be revealed at Pasta Night up at the 1440 Multiversity Teaching Kitchen on Wednesday, Nov. 8.

Executive Chef Kenny Woods, who designs and executes menus for the handsome new retreat center, will lead a small gathering through a hands-on pasta workshop, with wine pairings and dinner, too.

There are many of us who love pasta, and secretly wish we knew a few tricks about finessing dishes to delight and impress our guests—or simply to enjoy with family. Well,

Woods will reveal some professional techniques for participants, such as learning to create and stuff classic tortelloni with whipped lemon ricotta, winter greens, and more.

After you’ve learned to create this Northern Italian farmhouse classic, you can relax and enjoy the creation, along with two other savory dishes and two wine pairings. It all happens in 1440’s brand new, state-of-the-art teaching kitchen classroom, and will finish up with Chef Woods sharing his tiramisu secrets. After extensive Facebook contretemps, I have discovered a few things that might help you (and me) navigate the expanding world of the New Cocktail currently happening in our neck of the woods. Some old school cocktails, e.g. the martini, the Sidecar, cater to those who enjoy the irreplaceable flavor of the central liquor involved in the cocktail, e.g. gin and/or brandy and Grand Marnier. Others, including ace Avanti mixologist Katie Cater, reminded me that a good cocktail requires balance of ingredients and that the alcohol needn’t be the dominant flavor note.

It might be any number of herbal or fruit ingredients. So when we see “gin” as one of the items in a multiingredient cocktail, that doesn’t mean that gin has a starring role.

Silly me. I was still on the page where cocktails contained few ingredients and highlighted the central liquor involved. The New Cocktail can be a glamorous mixture of anything that tastes fabulous, even if alcohol plays a minor role. Got that?

ason Revino, owner of the popular Scotts Valley Cambodian restaurant Jia Tella’s, opened another restaurant in July called Two Doors. It’s got pizza, burgers, sandwiches, finger foods, beer, and bike décor everywhere. Oh, and it’s in the same building as Revino’s first restaurant—and next to the bar that he also owns, JT’s Next Door.

We asked Revino to explain it all.

JASON REVINO: My main restaurant is Jia Tella’s, which is two doors down. Right next to it is JT’s Next Door, which is my bar. When I was building it, Jia Tella’s was open, and I’d be working on building the bar next door, and all my friends would call me [asking], “are you at the restaurant or are you next door?” I’d go, “I’m next door.” It just kind of stuck. When I started building Two Doors, they’d say, “are you at Next Door or are you at JT’s?” “I’m two doors down.” It’s kind of an Abbott and Costello “Who’s On First?”

Why the bicycle theme?

The whole concept when I built Jia Tella’s—remember Seinfeld, the soup

Nazi? It’s like “my way or the highway.”

Everything in there is my favorite.

Same thing with Two Doors. I had to decorate it. I love mountain biking. I go all over the world mountain biking.

If I’m going to decorate it, it might as well be with something I love.

I love beers, I love burgers, I love pizza, I love mountain biking.

Barking Dog, Star Wars, Sick ’n’ Twisted. Where’d you come up with these sandwich and burger names?

They’re named after bikes and trails all around Santa Cruz. It was something kind of fun. I ride a Devinci Spartan bike. My favorite pizza is a Devinci. It’s got black olives and sausage, onions, a little bit of garlic. It’s a thin crust. My favorite salad is a Spartan. I love Caesar salad. Barking Dog is our Italian Sausage sandwich. That’s a trail that’s way in the top of the mountain, kind of hidden. You got Sick ’n’ Twisted, Pipeline. Those are all names of trails. It’s fun. We create an environment where you want to hang out with some friends, drink some beers and get some good food.

I

was fortunate to sit next to David Estrada at a recent Pinot Paradise dinner at Lester Family Vineyards—from which all proceeds went to Hospice of Santa Cruz County.

Estrada, a retired Scotts Valley dentist, realized in 1990 that he wanted to make wine as well as attend to teeth. He established his estate vineyard that year, planted five different Pinots and “a few rows of Chardonnay and Viognier,” and called it Clos Tita after his wife, Tita.

I tasted Estrada’s elegant Pinot at the dinner, but I wanted to write about his interesting Gironde, and found a 2013 for $29.99 at Deer Park Wine & Spirits in Aptos—a well-stocked market with a selection of local wines. This Gironde is a well-made and robust blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, which Estrada says has a complex long finish with “chaparral character in the nose.”

When the Sun is in Scorpio all of humanity enters into a time of testing. Humanity is given Scorpio’s Nine Tests. An example of the tests, ancient yet relevant today, can be read in the biblical story of Samson, the Old Testament hero, who had to choose between passion (Delilah) and obedience to and love of God. The Nine Tests describe the Scorpio labor (each sign offers us tasks and labors to overcome). The tests are subtle and are given to ascertain whether we are strong enough to proceed forward into Initiation.

As we encounter the tests we either enter into an expanded field of Soul light or remain within the underbelly of Scorpio, the darkened emotional waters of the personality. The latter makes us feel imprisoned and drowning.

The Nine Tests focus on the three aspects of the personality (physical, emotional, and lower mental). How we respond is part of the test. Do we react or respond when the tests appear? The Tests are as follows.

1. Physical tests: sexuality, physical comfort over service to others; and the right use of money.

2. Emotional tests: fear (inhibiting activities); hate (which destroys relationships); and excessive and obsessive ambition and desire for power, (which can destroy entire nations).

3. Mental (lower mind) tests: pride (creates a barrier to the Soul); belief in separateness and isolation (create barriers to Right Human Relations); and cruelty (outcome of inappropriate use of power).

These tests are for our own personal spiritual practice. They are not to judge others. Neither are we to judge ourselves.

Observation, discrimination, non-criticism and compassion must be learned. We are all traveling the path together. We are all being tested. Understanding these things, we help each other. Struggling toward Jerusalem, together.

It’s the best market in town! The checkers and baggers are polite and they check you out quickly. At some stores, it’s like being in the Twilight Zone — how long will I be here? — with people sliding their store cards, and when they break out the coupons you’re done; you’re there forever!” KARRI: “We know the people here. That makes it a much more personal experience for us, rather than feeling faceless and nameless.”

What do you folks like to cook? KARRI: “He’s Mr. Meats. I do a lot with vegetables and explore many cuisines such as French, Italian, Mediterranean, Mexican, Chinese and more. Items you’d think you might not find here you do.

Like Champagne vinegar, vanilla beans, and tamarind paste for Thai food.” TOM: “Shopper’s butchers are pros and their products are top quality such as grass-fed meat, rack of lamb, flank steaks, and sausages. I love their whole chickens for beer-can-chicken. The marinated teriyaki products are amazing! For the quality you get and the environment, the pricing is reasonable.” KARRI: “Shopping at Shopper’s is always fun.”

Plan on shopping here for holiday meals? KARRI: “Yes. My mother usually cooks the turkey for Thanksgiving, but I’ll make all the sides.” TOM: “I like breaking tradition by doing ribs. For Christmas, we’ll get a crown pork roast and a filet mignon.” KARRI:” Shopper’s overall wine selection is pretty big, and we’ll get some great Cabernets. Also Bushmill’s and whipped cream for Irish coffees. Shopper’s is a family-oriented market, and not only is it a holiday tradition for us but an every-day tradition as well.” TOM: “Holidays or not, Shopper’s employees bend over backward for you. It’s fun running into friends and family during holidays. It’s a local thing.”
