EDITOR’S NOTE Before the arrival of the Warriors, Santa Cruz didn’t have sports teams to get behind (other than the Derby Girls, of course).

Our civic pride instead went into a rooting interest in only-in-Santa-Cruz phenomena that seemed like everybody everywhere should embrace. Spoiler alert: usually, they did not.

That’s why it seemed strange when Bonny Doon Vineyard started to make a big impact in the mainstream wine world. From the start, Randall Grahm was the most “Santa Cruz” of entrepreneurs—a counterculture thinker, visionary and remorseless punner who took no end of joy in mocking the pretensions of the wine industry.

At the same time, he was also

making great wine. I have cherished memories of the bottles I got from his wine club back in the day—they were sometimes experimental one-offs that he never produced again, and among them were the most intriguing wines I have ever experienced.

When Grahm sold off his successful Big House and Cardinal Zin labels in the mid-2000s, something changed. While still capable of producing great wines, Grahm’s big-picture vision seemed increasingly rudderless.

Clearly, he realized this, as well.

In Christina Waters’ cover story this week, she examines how Grahm is attempting to refocus with a new estate vineyard and a new mission, inspired by the hyper-specific qualities of seed and soil. From one punner to another, Randall, we’re rooting for you.

POWER OF TREE

Thank you for highlighting the healing power of trees in your Health and Wellness issue (GT, July 29). I think it’s important to recognize that the health benefits are much more wide-ranging and readily accessible than suggested in the article.

It’s clear that being in forests is profoundly good for us, with a host of documented benefits that include reduced stress, blood pressure and depression, and improved vitality, immune function, and sleep. And it’s not just old-growth forests, not just conifers, and not just the aroma that have positive impacts.

Similarly, being near trees in cities makes people happier and healthier, and even reduces crime rates. The effects are so powerful that even viewing trees through a window or images of trees has positive impacts on health and behavior. Extensive research confirms what many of us know instinctively—trees help us think better, feel better, heal better, and treat each other better—in forests and urban areas alike.

Humans lived in nature for millions of years. It’s what we’re designed for, so it’s not surprising that being near trees

and nature is healthy for us. Saying that trees heal us because of the aromatic compounds they generate is akin to saying that love is good for us because it releases oxytocin—it’s just part of a very rich and complex story. And, like love, our deep and healing bond with trees is much more beautiful and mysterious than what can be measured in scientific studies.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have access to abundant forests and natural places in this area. Being in those places is one of the best things we can do for our bodies, minds and spirits.

P.S. The Japanese term for forest bathing is actually “Shinrin-yoku.”

Scientists at UCSC are using big data to fight cancer, and now they’re getting some help, too. The Genomics Institute’s California Kids Cancer Comparison project was recently awarded $1.2 million in funding. The project, led by UCSC engineering professor David Haussler, will harness big data to search for a wide variety of cancer therapies for children who fail to respond to traditional treatment, and track their effectiveness.

Ten years of planning and community organizing will pay off for some Aptos neighbors. On Monday, Aug. 3, the Santa Cruz County Parks department had a groundbreaking ceremony for Seacliff Village Park, at the corner of McGregor Drive and Sea Ridge Road in Aptos. Phase One, which will be finished in five months, will have a lighthousethemed play structure, a picnic area, a small plaza, a drinking fountain, benches, multiple walkways and drought-tolerant landscaping.

It should be exercised with fairness and equality, starting at home and extending to our schools and community.

Parents must be empowered to guide their children’s choices. They must teach by example, even if that means changing their own behaviors. Schools must be viewed as partners in raising children. They bear a shared responsibility in nurturing and influencing character of our children. They must be given the support and tools to do this with the full and constant participation of parents and the community. Police are

not the enemy. With a few exceptions, they are the everyday heroes that allow a community to function in an atmosphere of security and safety.

I share the sadness and grief of a community that has seen too many tragedies of late. My response has been to abandon Santa Cruz in search of a kinder place. But my hope is that this amazing city, on the beautiful Central Coast of California, will look deep into its soul and muster the good sense and strength to make the right choices to reclaim this most precious jewel for those who have loved it and still believe in its future.

T

he scent of flowers, burning sage and melting candles fill the Tannery Arts Center’s courtyard— the smell of a memorial.

It’s just after 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, and dozens of people huddle around a shrine dedicated to Madyson “Maddy” Middleton, the 8-year-old girl who was slain on Sunday, July 26, in this same arts complex that she called home.

Stuffed animals rest on bouquets of flowers between glass candles and bobbing balloons on this clear night.

The mourners—many of them Tannery residents—throw their heads back and howl at the blue moon in honor of Middleton and

her favorite animal, the wolf.

This has all been part of the healing process. Just a few days earlier, the campus was much quieter. After the initial horror of a 26-hour search that ended in the worst way imaginable, her body discovered in a recycling bin, many Tannery residents kept to themselves.

“Last week, everyone was in shock. “Even though this has affected them, and most likely changed them as a person, they’re trying to move forward.”

But everywhere, there are constant reminders of what happened. At 8:15 a.m. the day before the Howl for Maddy, 10 news cameras crowded the front row of a Santa Cruz County courtroom. A 15-year-old in a green shirt and handcuffs skulked in, shoulders hanging down.

Adrian “A.J.” Gonzalez had always been known around the Tannery as a quiet, nice kid and an amazing yo-yoer. Now he was scheduled to be arraigned as an adult on murder and >12

Robyn Barbour was for the death penalty before she was against it. The Sacramentoarea teacher used to support capital punishment in California, she says, “because my dad was in favor of it.”

Barbour had a change of heart when her grandmother was murdered in 1994.

Her killer is now incarcerated at the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla. That facility houses death row for women—but her grandmother’s murderer got a life sentence.

Barbour recalls a district attorney “who needed to enhance his political stature” by pushing for the death penalty. She also noted the inherent racial bias in the system: white victim, white perpetrator.

Her grandmother’s murderer was “a serial killer,” says Barbour, “and if she had been black, she would have been executed.”

Barbour now serves on the San Francisco– based Death Penalty Focus, an anti–death penalty group.

The state hasn’t executed anyone since 2006 because of challenges to the constitutionality of the practice in California that have attacked the method and process of putting the condemned to death. The state has struggled to come up with an execution protocol that meets Eighth Amendment standards against cruel and unusual punishment, and state officials declared they would wait for a ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court before proceeding.

There’s a lethal-injection chamber at San Quentin built in 2008 waiting for its first customer.

The ruling on the matter of method, Glossip v. Gross, came down June 29. The Roberts court said a three-drug injection, despite well-publicized “botches,” doesn’t violate the Constitution.

Then there’s the issue of process. A U.S. District Court judge ruled in 2014 that the death penalty in California is unconstitutional, not because of the method, but because of delays that stem from a lack of attorneys for defendants.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris appealed the decision; it’s now in the

NEWS CREATIVE HEALING <11 sexual assault charges. It only took a minute for the judge to OK a request from public defender Larry Biggam, who’s representing Gonzalez, to delay the arraignment until Sept. 21.

Outside the courtroom, Santa Cruz County District Attorney Jeff Rosell said he is confident in his case. Biggam said his job is to make sure “the minor, like every citizen accused, receives a fair trial.”

At the Tannery, residents are shocked that this tragedy could happen in their artist community, which was designed to be an affordable creative utopia. More than that, they say they are coping with the loss of two children they watched grow up. They’re trying to help two mothers grieve, mourn and heal.

“We’re one family,” says Tannery resident Setorro Garcia. “It’s a tight-knit community.”

One week after Middleton first went missing, longtime Tannery resident Kirby Scudder takes me on an evening walk around the campus. “It’s been a hell of a week,” he says.

“Our biggest concern is for the two families and the mothers.

We’re deeply concerned about them,” says Scudder, who is dating Laura Jordan, Middleton’s mother. “That’s really job one.

And then, of course, what it did to the community. It’s like having a tsunami come through here.

And there’s no preparation for something like this. No one has the skills to comprehend it or deal with the aftermath of what happens. So, we’re trying to figure it out day by day.”

And so people are moving

forward. Last week near Middleton’s memorial, Gonzalez’s sobbing mother, Reggie Factor, and Jordan shared a loving embrace.

Tannery artists have already put up a mural—a tree near the courtyard with Middleton’s face in the center and bunches of leaves on which people can write a message for her. People are offering counseling, acupuncture and other services at the Tannery through Aug. 9. Residents have been coming together at potlucks in large donations of fruits, veggies and savory meals, including contributions from businesses like Beckmann’s Bakery and Chipotle.

A week before this evening stroll with Scudder, he and other Tannery residents were searching in the woods for Middleton all night. The search continued the next day, on Monday, >16

NEWS BRIEFS RETURNED TO SENDER After enduring four years of gruelling tests, AP courses, high school drama and all the other attempts to stand out in the college admissions battle, 520 students already admitted to UCSC received news last month that their admission was revoked because of a missed deadline.

This year’s number of rescissions is at an all-time high—up from 218 in 2014, and 103 in 2013, and students are furious.

The deadline to turn in a final official transcript of high school grades and courses was, until 2013, July 14. In 2014, it switched to July 1.

Once a student accepts their place at UCSC—or any other UC—they agree to a conditions contract that stipulates their transcript needs be physically in the admissions office by July 1, and if they fail to meet any of the conditions, their

admission will be revoked.

Having it postmarked July 1 and arriving a few days later does not cut it.

Some students, like Garrett Harrison, say that the fault lies with their high school. Every student from his district, the Huntington Beach Union High School District, was rescinded because their transcripts weren’t postmarked until July 1, he says—contractually, their teachers have until June 29 to submit final grades. Now, each student from the six district schools has to appeal.

And that’s after a representative from the district notified the entire UC system about their June 29 deadline.

Somewhere down the line, however, UCSC didn’t get the memo.

The good news is, if they can prove that the missed deadline was out of their control, UCSC Associate Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management Michelle Whittingham

says, students’ appeals will be accepted and admission reinstated.

That doesn’t take away from the shock—as well as confusion with housing placement and class scheduling—that comes with receiving that rescission letter, says Harrison (no relation to the author).

The UC moved its July transcript deadline forward largely for that reason—so that rescinded students have time to find a Plan B before fall begins, says Whittingham.

Having the whole system run electronically would make it easier, she says, but they’re not there yet, she says.

“We communicate early and often,” says Whittingham. “We understand, and in no way take lightly the impact on students and families.” ANNE-MARIE HARRISON

activists who occupied a vacant Wells Fargo building in November 2014. The protesters took over the building on River Street in a protest that was an offshoot of the Occupy Santa Cruz encampment in San Lorenzo Park. Dozens entered, and the District Attorney’s office charged 11 activists, who came to be known as the Santa Cruz 11.

Several defendants have had charges dismissed, and the remaining four accepted a plea deal last month. As part of the deal, the four must each pay $1,720 in restitution and fines, serve 18 months probation, do 100 hours of community service, and stay away from the empty bank.

hands of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

In 2006, a federal judge in California ruled that the three-drug cocktail then in use was unconstitutional. That ruling enacted a de facto moratorium on capital punishment.

“California is moving on two separate tracks,” says Robert Dunham, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC), a Washington, D.C.–based clearinghouse for all things execution.

“One is the abolition, and the second is reactivating it. Obviously, those are internally contradictory tracks.”

Dunham says the state will submit its new draft protocol for comment, but that’s just the beginning. “It will be a matter of probably years before a protocol is in place and approved by the courts.”

State prison officials said they’d issue a draft California protocol within 120 days of

the Supreme Court’s decision.

“In order to comply with California’s capital punishment laws, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation [CDCR] has been developing lethal-injection-protocol regulations,” says agency spokesman Jeffrey Callison via email.

The state is pursuing a one-shot lethalinjection protocol, says CDCR deputy press secretary Terry Thornton. The one-shot solution has generally entailed a lethal dose of sodium thiopental, but pharmaceutical companies no longer provide that drug to correctional facilities. Officials here and in other states have worked to shield the source of the drug from public view.

The CDCR acknowledges that there’s been a problem with access to execution drugs, as it notes that there are currently 751 people on California’s death row as of July 7.

Depending on what happens with the case now before the Court of Appeals, this

“two-track” standstill might be moot, says Dunham of the DPIC. The 2014 District Court ruling threw out the capital conviction of Ernest Dewayne Jones; it found that the death penalty is unconstitutional “because of California’s failure to provide timely counsel to death row inmates,” says Dunham.

“Much of the coverage of the Jones case has talked about the death penalty [being] declared unconstitutional because of the amount of time it takes while the appellate process is completed,” adds Dunham.

“That’s true as far as it goes, but a lot of people are under the mistaken impression that it’s because of endless appeals filed by inmates.”

The California Legislature limits the pool of lawyers available to inmates in capital cases. “The district court found that the state, and not the defendants, were responsible” for the appellate delays, he

says. “California has a conundrum because it doesn’t have a mechanism to move the cases through the appellate process, and once that is completed, it has no method of execution. Fixing one without fixing the other is not a solution.”

For now, capital punishment in California resembles an M. C. Escher drawing—a Möbius strip going endlessly nowhere.

Dunham recalls a print, “the one with the guy on the stairs, where you can be walking on the top and the bottom of the stairs at the same time.”

The method and the process, he says, “are two separate things, proceeding on two separate tracks that are oblivious to one another.”

Meanwhile, there are hundreds of condemned at San Quentin, and more on the way.

“You’d think,” says Barbour, “they would stop sending people there.”

July 27. Santa Cruz County Sheriffs, K-9 units, San Mateo County Sheriffs and the FBI all joined the search. Initially, many figured a homeless person was responsible for Middletonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, as the center is met by a bike path that runs down the levee path to the beach.

The search ended on Monday at 8 p.m., 26 hours after it began.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when an SCPD officer found Middletonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body in a Tannery recycling bin. Police arrested Gonzalez soon after.

Scudder has been trying to avoid reading the news or hearing any more grisly details. He already knows about as much as he can handle.

As I talk to him, a man with tears in his eyes approaches us. Gilbert Rivera, a Watsonville resident, had been hanging out at the Tanneryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Artbar and CafĂŠ and talked to Middleton minutes before she was seen for the last time. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just come from a movie theater, where he was trying to watch Southpaw, the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing film, with his girlfriend. He walked out crying. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t watch movies. Movies arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the same,â&#x20AC;? says Rivera, who also helped search for Middleton. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hit me then. A week later, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hitting me now. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been up for three days.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just trying to heal our wounds here,â&#x20AC;? Scudder says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Overall, I think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing a pretty good job.â&#x20AC;?

Scudder has lived at the Tannery for 10 years, first as a caretaker for the property before it opened. He worries that longtime critics of the project, which provides affordable rents for artists, will use this incident to put the complex, which opened more than six years ago, in a negative light.

But Brown, the Tannery boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chair, thinks people will look past that. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quickly going to see how special and wonderful this Tannery Arts Center is, and embrace it as a special part of our community,â&#x20AC;? Brown says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And the tragedy that happened is difficult to understand. But we definitely donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want it to define the center.â&#x20AC;?

The Bonny Doon Vineyard iconoclast dives into uncharted waters again, fueled by an epic new vision of American soil and a search for the grape less planted

hen a tall young Beverly Hills oenophile transplanted himself to Bonny Doon in the early 1980s, he wanted to produce nothing less than the great American Pinot Noir.

A vineyard was planted, but, alas, the realities of soil, climate and pestilence took their toll, and the enterprising winemaker turned his attention to the more responsive grapes of the Rhône— Grenache and Syrah.

Awash in wines with names involving cigars and telegrams and adorned with original art by counterculture icons, the silver-tongued Randall Grahm quickly made a name for himself as the “Rhône Ranger.”

Soon came eclectic varietals made from grapes rarely planted in California.

Crafting Rieslings, Nebbiolos and Sangioveses like mad, Grahm traveled the world marketing his wines. With his Pacific Rim Rieslings and Big House Reds—large, lucrative lines—Grahm literally became a household name.

He was on the cover of Wine Spectator, the industry bible, looking cocky and

smoking a big cigar. You couldn’t pick up a wine list on either coast without spotting one of his wines, and his reach grew across four continents. By 2004, his brand had expanded into the 28th largest winery in the U.S. And then, poof, f he and his wine empire dropped off the radar. Suddenly the Big House brand belonged to some large, faceless corporate structure. His crown-jewel Santa Cruz restaurant Le Cigare Volant closed. The once-familiar labels grew esoteric and promiscuous in design and varietal. Over the last few years, many longtime fans both locally and elsewhere began to wonder: what happened to Randall Grahm?

Now, however, he seems poised for a second act. He’s uprooted his Bonny Doon Vineyard tasting room from the Ingalls Street complex on the Westside of Santa Cruz and transplanted it to a former art gallery in Davenport. Despite taking more and more time to be a highly involved father of an almost-teenage daughter, he finds time to be around the country selling wines like it was 1990. And he’s getting his hands dirty the old-fashioned

way—as a born-again viticulturist with a daring dream for his 400-acre estate in San Juan Bautista.

THE ESTATE I am picking raspberries with Randall Grahm on that estate, acres purchased with proceeds from the sell-off of his high profile brands. It is as pure a slice of old California landscape as one can imagine. The raspberries, warm from the afternoon sun, are the best I’ve tasted since I was a kid. They occupy a swath of organic orchards and olive groves planted along Grahm’s new estate vineyard, already vigorous with waist-high Syrah, Grenache and assorted exotic, esoteric and experimental grape varietals.

For the iconoclastic wine whisperer, the path to whatever comes next invariably requires a walk on the wild side. And right now—and from the looks of things, for a long long time to come—that means a significant amount of attention, fine-tuning and labor will go into the acres he intends to fill with vineyards.

Having once graduated with a degree in plant sciences from UC Davis, Grahm has gone back to roots.

“We’re putting in a pond,” he says, pointing toward workers and a few backhoes rumbling around in the 95-degree heat. “That’s to capture rainwater—should such occur—and raise the humidity to help with growing all sorts of vegetables.”

Vegetables, orchards, and oddball grape varietals such as Furmint and Rossese—the years have not diminished Grahm’s capacity for Big Ideas. I point toward a row of what looks like tall black hills of charcoal.

And that is exactly what they are.

“Biochar. Everything is planted with biochar,” he says with a grin.

“Biochar from Romania. We mix it with compost—it enhances the

water-holding capacity of the soil.” But it does much more than that, Grahm believes. “It turns smart soil into brilliant soil. The microrhizome population increases.

Everything grows like Jack and the Beanstalk,” he says. “It amplifies the character of the soil. Helps mineral extraction.” Does it do windows?

“Dry-farming might lower the tonnage of harvest compared with conventional methods,” he admits, “but biochar will increase grape quality and flavor intensity.”

REIGN OF TERROIR Grahm has long insisted that expressive, mineral-infused wines are due to “the place, not the grape.”

rootstock. “Very drought resistant,” he explains of the rootstock he personally “imported” from Texas.

The Grenache was grown from seed.

“I was obsessed with Pinot Noir for 30 years,” he admits. “I wanted to make the great Pinot Noir. It was so stupid. To make a great Pinot Noir, I would have had to go to Burgundy.”

Now he’s looking for the grape less planted, so to speak. In addition to the unbred varieties of his Darwinian imagination, he’s interested in Rossese, a Ligurian grape variety—“it’s extremely obscure, aromatic, underappreciated,” Grahm says.

Grahm is still getting to know this new estate landscape—the lay of the land, the microclimates, the best drainage and exposure to sun and shade. The property sits right on top of the San Andreas Fault.

“The soil is friggin’ perfect,” he proclaims. New olive trees form the estate allée all the way to the end of the road. It will take a hell of a lot of time, he admits, to raise the orchards of olives, pears, apples—not to mention grapes—that he’s after.

“We’ll get a little Grenache this year,” he says.

We set out to tour the property, driving very slowly up very primitive winding dirt roads. The views of the Salinas Valley below are stunning. Spectacular giant oaks decorate the hills and canyons.

So he’s essentially asking “what can we do in North America that Europe can’t do?”

The revolutionary part of Grahm’s New World dream is to plant grapes from seed. They can’t do that in Europe, due to the presence of phylloxera.

Grahm’s hyper-terrestrial plan calls for creating, with the help of resistant rootstocks, no less than 10,000 brand-new, neverbefore-been-seen grape varieties.

The official statement runs like this: Grahm wants to create 10,000 new grape varieties over the next 10 years, and to plant a uniquely heterodox vineyard—each vine genetically distinctive from the other—in the hopes of revealing a new Grand Cru in the New World.

“There are two bets here,” he carefully explains to me. “One bet is that by creating so much variety in the vineyard, you can eventually identify gifted individuals totally congruent with the site. And the second bet is that by blending those gifted individuals, you’ll create something enjoyable and unique.”

The result, he believes, will truly be a New World wine that expresses this—and no other—spot on the planet.

“It has lots of slopes, lovely soils, and great northeast-facing exposures,” he says.

Grahm invited a geomancer when the property was purchased five years ago to check for auspicious aspects. “He chose this entrance,” Grahm says, nodding in agreement.

“That would be a great cave. We could dig right into the limestone,” he says, pointing and pursing his lips with pleasure. “The land has volcanic soil as well. We’re still figuring it out. Best to do small plantings at first.”

He gazes off toward the coast ranges, across his field of dreams.

He wonders how much of the harvest of all the breeding, planting and nurturing he will actually see.

many of the 50 states” continues to eat up his time, time spent away from what he believes to be the proper work, which is growing grapes and enjoying his family.

Like all winemakers today, Grahm is up against “a million other wines in the business, and ninetenths of it is crap.” So far he hasn’t had much time to enjoy the new vineyard, either.

“I am nonetheless confident that the estate wines we will produce at San Juan Bautista will be truly world-class,” he says.

In five years’ time, Grahm hopes to have transitioned to a largely direct-to-consumer model.

His crowdfunding initiative will help. Grahm says the Bonny Doon Vineyard tasting room in

Nor is this a momentary whim.

Chasing an authentic California terroir has been Grahm’s passion for many years. Indeed, it could yield his most important legacy.

In the last chapter of his awardwinning 2009 wine text/memoir, Been Doon So Long, Grahm reflects that he has long defined himself as “the guy who is going to plant a great vineyard some day.” And he insists that there is no way to produce great wine “apart from planting a vineyard from scratch with the intention of expressing the terroir of the site.”

“Wines can have life force,” he says. “They persist, they last. It seems to be related to the minerals.

And minerals in the soil—strong terroirs—yield living wine.”

Grahm is looking forward. “I don’t want to go back. I’ve done the moneymakers. My role now is to discover, to explore the depth of this estate,” he says, grinning that wry philosophical grin. “I feel like I’m at the beginning of my career.”

ohsin Shafi arrived in the United States for the first time a little over two weeks ago, but it took a six-hour interrogation by four Homeland Security agents before he was allowed to leave the San Francisco airport. Shafi was flying from his

home in Lahore, Pakistan, and though the agents denied that that was why he had been detained, they asked him over and over again how he got a visa, and why he was in the U.S. Shafi told them he was on his way to Santa Cruz for the “Encounters on the Frontier: Upsidedownland” exhibit

at the Tannery’s Radius Gallery.

And considering that this is exactly the type of experience that fuels the creative fervor of both himself and Santa Cruz expressionist artist Andrew Purchin, his “Encounters” collaborator, there may be a love letter to Homeland Security on the horizon

included in the show.

“Our airport security people have the best art exhibit. They get everybody engaged—everybody taking their clothes off, putting them back on,” quips Purchin. “They’re radical artists.”

Last April, Shafi opened his project “Sada-ism,” to the public in Karachi.

It included comments on Dadaism (a pre-WWI European art movement that critiqued the political status quo), and pieces like a portrait of England’s Queen Victoria with Benazir Bhutto’s face superimposed onto it and a parody caricature “Jesus Charlie.”

The project took a year and a half to complete and was taken down within two hours. Shafi received death threats.

In Pakistan, illustrative art in general is fairly rare, says Shafi, because Islam is an aniconic religion.

For him, pushing the limits of what society allows—like toying with politics and religion in a Muslim nation—hasn’t exactly gotten him into the country’s art mainstream.

Both Shafi and Purchin strive to bring the audience into their work— some is meant to be held, smushed, or crinkled—and it’s informed by dayto-day living, which is why neither fully know what will be at the exhibit’s opening on Aug. 7.

Taken separately, their styles are quite different: Purchin does largecanvas oil paintings, while Shafi has come full circle to making digital and paper collages. But together, they critique, mix and meddle in collaborations of paint, paper, canvas, videos, collage cut-outs and tense, sometimes playful, imagery.

Purchin’s a Jew and Shafi’s a Muslim, so cross-cultural conversations are kind of their bread and butter. They’ve been bouncing artistic ideals off each other since they met through social media in 2010. In 2014, they opened part one of “Encounters on the Frontier” in Lahore, and this month’s installation will feature pieces from that exhibit as well as new ones.

For their collaboration in Pakistan, Purchin put together a wooden-framed game called “Crustopoly” with old

fashioned-cans, toy horses, dirt and twigs from Santa Cruz and Lahore.

Players roll dice marked “Muslim,” “Jew,” “East,” “West,” “Brother,” “Sister.”

“That’s it—it’s odds. We’re just born into the family or gender that we’re born into,” says Purchin. “It’s a role of the dice, whether it’s upside down or right side up.”

When Purchin was planning to travel to Lahore for the exhibit, says Shafi, he was very worried about the security situation in Pakistan, partially because of how Western media has portrayed the country. In the beginning, Shafi had a hard time taking his anxiety seriously.

“For me, I live there and that’s my life and I don’t feel insecure.

But I realized that Americans see Pakistanis, maybe particularly after 9/11, as mainly terrorists,” says Shafi.

“It was funny and sad; I didn’t know how to respond.”

The sad irony, says Purchin, was that while in Lahore, Santa Barbara suffered through the Isla Vista killings and Pakistan was comparatively quiet.

And at the Tannery, where the Santa Cruz installation of “Explorations on the Frontier” will open, Shafi and Purchin led a workshop just hours before 8-year-old Madyson Middleton went missing.

“We think of the world as so dangerous and of our land as so safe,” says Purchin. “It’s ‘upsidedownland’— it can happen anywhere.”

“As artists we’re lucky that that we can share these experiences with other people,” says Shafi. “I’m sure that other people are experiencing these things—meeting new people going to new places—but not everyone is a writer, performer or painter.

That’s where I feel the blessing of being an artist, of experiencing and telling other people in your own creative way.”

Pants on Fire Smart, sexy and hilarious, Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s ‘The Liar’ is a triumph BY CHRISTINA WATERS things happen. With each person he encounters Dorante exaggerates and spins the truth further and further out of recognizable shape.

Not out of malice, mind you, but essentially because he gets carried away. As the hyperbolic dandy Dorante, the beautiful Brian Smolin has more fun than should be legal, getting in and out of sticky situations by the seat of his beribboned pants. Meeting up with Dorante on his first day in Paris is the equally resourceful but pathologically honest Cliton (a flatout brilliant Toby Onwumere), and the two join forces to woo a pair of beauties, one way or the other. But wait! Our over-confident liar gets his potential conquests confused,

a situation blithely exploited by the playwright with a nod to Cyrano de Bergerac, and soon both women are after Dorante’s head. With his immediate, um, affections aimed at Lucrece (the juicy Sierra Jolene), the liar finds that he has mistakenly courted her best friend Clarice (the saucy Mary Cavett) instead. All hell breaks loose, especially since Dorante has told so many overlapping, interlocking lies to so many—including Clarice’s secret fiance, his dapper comrade in romantic crimes, and even his own father.

anta Cruz Shakespeare’s nimble new production of The Liar is the sort of searing live comedy that blows all things digital right off the map. Every single actor in this splendid production is remarkable.

That needs repeating. Each and every actor adds, and nothing interferes. Romping through a very brisk two and a half hours, the entire ensemble ran away with the audience on opening night.

The play by David Ives (based on a 17th-century comedy by Pierre Corneille) offers a virtuoso weave of commedia dell’arte, SNL, and hip-hop.

We all know this guy—the liar, Dorante—an amiable arriviste who blows into town and wants to make

(so well that the fast-paced dialogue practically levitates), but he also threads the plot with enough silly innuendo that you’d swear it was ghostwritten by Shakespeare himself. Adding the exact tone of delicious devilry to the whole mix is actress Melinda Parrett, playing twin servants— one an uptight scold, the other a roaring hottie. (Pay attention— Parrett will play Lady Macbeth in the final play of the season.)

The Liar—liberally riffing on Corneille’s iambic pentameter—is loaded with enough wordplay to push any company of actors to their limits. And the cast nails it.

So much fast-paced wit, with clever comedic gestures to match—it’s hard to believe our eyes. And ears.

Each performer creates playful sizzle to season dialogue that bridges fancy-pants France and 21st-century vernacular.

Oh, the eye candy! David Mickelsen’s gorgeous period costumes showcase jewel-toned vanity. The guys swash and buckle in lavishly feathered hats, hose and doublets, capes, swords, high boots, and plenty of starched ruffles. The women’s gowns are sumptuous with cinched waists, hoop skirts and lace. Everybody gets to wear fantasy wigs. And the hats! Such foppish fashion, such Louis XIV Baroque excess, is a seriously chewy feast. Yet The Liar soars most on its text. Playwright Ives’ insanely funny script allows some of the “rhymes” to devolve into sitcom groaners. Dorante’s climactic confession actually stopped the show on opening night.

Not since Richard Ziman’s Falstaff have I laughed so hard. Director Art Manke—whose Bach at Leipzig remains one of my fondest theater memories—took an exceptional cast and set it on fire. You always know what’s going on, and every minute of it is delicious. Strap yourself in. The Liar is a triumph—a show smart enough to disarm skeptics and sexy enough to delight audiences in need of pre-Candy Crush fun.

Portland roots-rockers seek their Wilco nirvana

n 2009, when alt-country band the Harmed Brothers left North Carolina to go on tour, they were headed for big changes. At a stop in Portland, Oregon, several members told singer-songwriter Ray Vietti that they wanted to cut the tour short and head home. Vietti wasn’t ready to go home, so he stayed, and the Harmed Brothers disbanded.

Eager to finish the tour, Vietti played a few shows solo, but he asked Alex Salcido and Guthrie McClenny, two local singer-songwriters he had met in Portland, if they’d like to join him for a three-guitar festival performance. The two agreed, but decided it would be better if McClenny played a drum kit and Salcido tried his hand at the banjo.

“It was just a by-chance type thing,”

says Vietti. “Alex wasn’t even a banjo player at the time. He told us, ‘I think I can play it.’ Sure enough, he can play it. He can play the hell out of it.”

The three pulled off the show and realized they had struck upon something special. In that moment, a new incarnation of the Harmed Brothers was born.

McClenny eventually left the band, but Vietti and Salcido are now one of the standout roots acts in Portland.

Regularly drawing comparison to Uncle Tupelo—the pioneering alt-country band built around Jeff Tweedy, who now fronts Wilco, and Jay Farrar, who went on to form Son Volt—the Harmed Brothers play folkinspired, American roots-rock.

Building off of a mutual admiration and a musical chemistry that was

apparent from the start, Vietti and Salcido are now six-plus years into their Harmed Brothers collaboration, and there is no end in sight.

“We’re pretty good at making each other a little bit better,” says Vietti “I immediately felt comfortable with Alex, and we share a love for a lot of the same music. There was just an instant bond there.”

A consistently raw outfit, the Harmed Brothers prioritize emotional authenticity and capturing the soul of a song—especially in the studio.

Where popular radio-roots bands such as Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers lean toward slick production and overdubs, the Harmed Brothers are all about recreating the live experience, for themselves and listeners.

From the beginning, the two have gone into recording studios, set up a few feet from each other, and played two or three takes. Sometimes they nail a song in one take. It rarely takes more than three.

Their comfort with quickly laying down tracks came in handy when they recorded a session for Daytrotter, a web-based music project. The popular platform releases tracks by several different artists each day, all recorded at the Horseshack, a studio in Rock Island, Illinois. The live tracks, as well as an instantly recognizable Daytrotter illustration, are posted online for fans and Daytrotter members. The experience helped introduce the Harmed Brothers to a wider audience and sealed their credibility as an underground band to watch.

For their forthcoming album, the Harmed Brothers turned to their community of fans to help them fund the project through crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. The album, which is tentatively self-titled, is slated for release in February of 2016. It’s already recorded, but there’s “just the little matter of the bill.”

For the album, Vietti and Salcido kept their raw recording approach, but they brought in more musicians to help. Having toured for years, the two have made a lot of musical friends and they wanted the album to reflect that.

“The production value has gone up slightly,” says Vietti, explaining that each album has been more arranged than the last. “There’s still that raw element, there’s just more instrumentation.”

With a solid foundation and a wide-open future, Vietti and Salcido are open to exploring their musical possibilities. The two are continually improving as songwriters and getting tighter as a band. Like Wilco, from whom they draw inspiration, they push the boundaries of what American roots-rock music is, and will keep doing so indefinitely.

“We’re working toward our Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” says Vietti referencing Wilco’s widely celebrated breakout album. “We’re working toward our great art record.”

INDIE ROCKERS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS Happyness brings its warped lyrics to the Crepe Place on Friday.

ondon’s indie trio Happyness is currently on their second U.S. tour. Like a lot of bands, they are on the slow train to building up an audience through constant touring and releasing albums. But to them, it felt really sudden.

When they released their debut self-titled EP in 2013, followed shortly by their LP, Weird Little Birthday, they had no expectations, but ended up getting a surprising amount of interest on music blogs. This led to the LP being re-released earlier this year on Bar None Records. But the stunning

thing is that all this time, they were barely a band—they’d never even played a show.

“It all happened in a quite backwards way,” says guitarist/ vocalist Benji Compston. “We weren’t really a band as far as anyone else was concerned. We would just think of stuff, record songs, re-record songs if we wanted to and re-record them again if we wanted to. It was lazy in a nice way.”

The lack of pressure in the creation process translates onto the albums in its laid-back slacker-rock sound which brings

to mind ’90s-era Yo La Tengo and Pavement. Pressure was so low, in fact, that there were no strict rules regarding who could play what on any given song. On some tracks, members played instruments they had no prior experience with.

“Whatever instrument was nearest to you, or you felt like playing, you just pick up and play the songs like that,” says Compston. “I think there’s something really cool about picking up an instrument and playing it when you hardly know your way around it and you’re learning how

to do things. That’s something we like doing in general.”

It actually took them a while to get the hang of playing live because of all the swapping, but they purchased a keyboard and drum machine, which helped smooth out the process a bit.

Considering how easygoing the music is, one of the most surprising things about Happyness is how weird their lyrics are. It’s a little buried under the fuzzy guitar tones, meandering drums, and understated soft-spoken melodies.

Most listeners barely even notice their peculiarity until they’ve had several listens with the records.

“We’re not consciously going, ‘oh those are weird lyrics.’ It more just happened that way,” Compston says. “We spend so much time together we just have these weird stories, like things that we’ll say. I don’t want to say in-jokes, because that makes it sound more exclusive than it is—just weird little things we’ll share. That’s just naturally what goes into the songs.”

Opener “Baby Jesus (Jelly Boy),” a gentle acoustic ditty about a man who happens to have the same birthday as Jesus, has the whispered vocal line “I’m the motherfucking birthday boy, don’t steal my thunder, baby Jesus.” Low-key Wilco-esque rocker “Orange Luz” opens with the line “You are so ugly when you’re smiling.” The original opening line was supposed to be “Celery, why are you trying to kill my father?”

Perhaps most perplexingly is the slick Broken Social Scene groove of “Naked Patients” with the line, sung totally straight-faced, “There’s something so funny about a sick body and the things that it does that it shouldn’t do.”

“We didn’t think very hard about where these songs were going to end up when we recorded them,” says Compston. “I know everyone says about lyrics, ‘oh, whatever it means to you,’ but it is kind of that.

Whatever energy people want to collect from the songs, that’s kind of cool. We were quite surprised that anyone was picking up on it at all.”

Jill Meniketti (above), however, figured out a way around that. By day she’s the band manager for legendary rock band Y&T, and by night, Meniketti is a savvy author who realized that she could turn the band’s concert tour into her very own book tour— which is exactly what she’ll be doing before and after the Y&T show this Friday, with copies of her debut novel Welcome to the Groove House, a perfect read for the rock ’n’ roll audience.

The Begonia Festival has been a Labor Day weekend staple in Capitola since 1952, with its family-fun activities including the sand sculpture contest, fishing derby, row-boat races, beach movie screenings, live music, and, of course, the iconic nautical parade of boats and floats laden with begonias floating down the Soquel Creek. Now in its 63rd year, the festival committee, which is entirely made up of volunteers and run by donations, invite the community to join them at Michael’s on Main this Sunday for a fundraiser to support future years of begonia beauty. The fundraiser will feature live music, wine tasting from local wineries and appetizers, as well as silent and live auctions.

LOCAL BAND SUN MAIDEN

On Sun Maiden’s Facebook page, there’s a link to lead singer Johanna LeFever’s Soundcloud page, where she’s uploaded a handful of tunes. This is all that currently exists of Sun Maiden’s music.

These are stark, melancholy folk tunes LeFever recorded in 2009, which she made just before hitting the road to go travel as much as she could—this travel bug is incidentally how she got her band name. A friend dubbed her Sun Maiden, as she was constantly chasing the sun in her travels.

Despite the sad, reflective overtones of her music, LeFever finds herself writing mostly while she is traveling and rock climbing, a time she feels happiest.

“A lot of inspiration comes from travel and adventure. I prefer to be in nature because normal life is a little overwhelming,” LeFever says. “Traveling is when I process my day-to-day life and relationships. I’ve been through some really hard times in the last two years, and I’ve gotten a handful of amazing songs out of it.”

The recordings are mostly solo, but there are some with drummer Keith Stocker. Recently, she’s expanded her group to include other members on guitar and bass. The material is still folkinspired and self-reflective at its core, but it sounds much different.

“It’s definitely still melancholy, like wondering, sad, but the tempo is definitely higher, and a bigger sound. It’s danceable at times, which is new and different. I like the higher energy and the more complicated band arrangements,” LeFever says. “Basically the songs I play now, none of it’s recorded. We’re really dying to get that going. A ska innovator? The answer is an enthusiastic yes. The Jamaican legend, who recently turned 83, predated and informed the music of reggae greats from Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff to Prince Buster, the Skatalites, and Augustus Pablo. A sessions player during the golden age of reggae, Ranglin, whose rhythmic playing at once bridges and dismisses established styles, put his imprint all over albums from some of the biggest labels in the game. Trinidadian trumpeter Etienne Charles is a leading force on the New York scene, bringing these foundational currents to the fore while creating a gorgeous new synthesis all his own. Recently named a Guggenheim Fellow, he’s released a series of acclaimed albums, including 2013’s Creole Soul (Culture Shock Music), an expansive project inspired by Haitian chants, calypso beats, sultry blues and galloping bebop. A.C. MYLES As a young Fresno man in his teens, A.C. Myles toured a lot with his band, really honing his guitar licks and performance style. The young musician has blossomed into a very competent, passionate blues singer-songwriter. He plays electric blues with a lot of energy,

and has two full-lengths under his belt. There’s a lot of tradition in his songwriting, but it’s fresh and exhilarating in its execution. On the surface, Esperanza Spalding is a jazz bassist and cellist. But the sphere of her music is way too large and complex to limit to just a few words.

The groundbreaking artist exists at the intersection of neo-soul, jazz, blues, experimentalism, international, fusion and rock. Her 2012 album, Radio Music Society, was a smash hit, topping Billboard’s Jazz Album chart and earning Spalding two Grammys. Her current tour, dubbed Emily’s D+Evolution, is centered around “rekindling her childhood interest in theater, poetry and movement.” What that means remains to be seen, but considering past outings, it will likely be textured, lively and boundary-pushing. 2008, when an off-Broadway play was produced based off of the life of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti (it was documented in the recent film Finding Fela). For anyone still not in the know, Afrobeat is an intoxicating mixture of jazz, funk and tribal African music, created in West Africa in the ’70s. Nowadays, New York, particularly, boasts a healthy amount of local bands playing the music. One of the leaders of the scene is Brooklyn’s 11-piece Zongo Junction, which brings a lot of energy and some deep grooves to the music. AC

a genre-bending film adapted from Reif Larsen’s book ‘The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet.’

Out On A Whim Fanciful style trumps story in ‘T. S. Spivet’ BY LISA JENSEN that combines text with illustrations, scientific diagrams, calculations, maps, and other visuals supposedly drawn by the story’s pre-teen hero in the course of his adventures. The book’s winsome images, along with the storyline about a genius boy from Montana on a solo cross-country trip to accept a prestigious award from the Smithsonian Institute must have appealed to Jeunet’s highly developed sense of whimsy.

Ten-year-old T (for Tecumseh) S (for Sparrow) Spivet (Kyle Catlett) lives in a rambling farmhouse out in the middle of nowhere in Divide, Montana. He says his taciturn, lassoswinging cowboy dad (Callum Keith Rennie) was “born 100 years too late.”

His mom (Helena Bonham Carter) is an easily-distracted entomologist

who’s obsessed with discovering a species of beetle so rare that it may not even exist. Teenage sister Gracie (Niamh Wilson) is fed up with her boring life and addicted to the Miss USA pageant.

Until recently, T.S. also had a nonidentical twin brother, Layton (Jakob Davies), a mini-cowboy like his dad and the apple of their father’s eye— until an accident with his Springfield rifle took his life. But T.S. takes after their mom, full of scientific curiosity, and always drawing maps and graphs and pseudo-scientific calculations to try to make sense of every aspect of his life. After sitting in on a lecture at a nearby university, T.S. accepts the challenge to create a perpetual motion machine, “the Holy Grail of inventors.”

he films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet are often more about style than story. Sometimes, the combination of the two is wildly felicitous, as in his beloved Amelie, or his mesmerizing A Very Long Engagement. And sometimes, the story doesn’t quite live up to Jeunet’s always unique and inventive composition, which is the case with The Young and Prodigious T. S. Spivet.

But even if it never quite comes together as a whole, the film is full of the charming little epiphanies and percolating stylistic touches that make it a must-see for fans of Jeunet.

The director’s source material this time should be a perfect fit. First-time author Reif Larsen’s 2009 book, The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet, is a genrebusting experiment in storytelling

from Miss Jibsen (Judy Davis, in imperious/neurotic mode), a high-placed undersecretary at the Smithsonian. The plans he submitted for his device have just won the Baird Award for the popular advancement of science—although everyone assumes he’s a grown-up. Invited to speak at the gala awards dinner in Washington, D.C., and, with his family preoccupied with their own concerns, T.S. packs a suitcase and hops a freight train heading east (by painting the signal light red, so the train has to stop).

Much of the story depends on steampunk-looking gears, gyros and fanciful plans, and Jeunet makes full use of them all in what you might call the margins of the movie—T.S.’s own drawings and fantasies, excerpts from his mother’s illustrated diary that he takes on the road, an Inside Out-type detour into Gracie’s cortex. There are many sly visual gags, including the moment when T.S., hiding out inside a motor home on one of the freight cars, escapes a guard’s detection by posing as one of the cardboard cutouts propped up inside the window.

Jeunet-regular Dominique Pinon pops up as a railway hobo. But the closer T.S. gets to D.C., the less persuasive the story becomes—from a ride with a trucker (Julian Richings) that feels more ominous than comic, to the finale at a talk show, with Jibsen and the clownish host vying for control of little T.S. It may be that the story itself ends with too much of a whimper (however sweet-natured), after all the clever storytelling. Or it may be that the whimsical sensibilities of Jeunet and his team (this is an international co-production shot mostly in Canada) don’t translate as well outside of his usual French setting, despite the American source material. But while his wacky humanism is less resonant here than usual, Jeunet’s fans might want to check it out—sooner than later, since it will probably only be at the Nick through Thursday, Aug 6.

FILM NEW THIS WEEK FANTASTIC FOUR While the film trailer for Fantastic Four leaves little in the way of actual plot summary, there is at least a lot of epic music with big special effects and crazy-looking sci-fi fight scenes mixed in with the Marvel super-crew. They are, of course, four outsiders who teleport to another universe, which totally messes with their body chemistry, and now they have to vanquish their formerfriend-turned-foe. This set of supers (Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B.Jordan, and Jamie Bell) reads like a generational update to the 2005 go-around with Jessica Alba and Chris Evans—does this mean they’re old now? Someone please implement a rule in Hollywood that there must be at least 10 years between remakes.

SHAUN THE SHEEP From the claymation masters who brought us the genius of Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit comes Shaun’s epic story of lambish mischief and farm-to-city adventures. The sneaky sheep decides to take a day off from the farm, but after a mix-up with the farmer, the whole flock is off to the city in an attempt to get everyone back home safely before anyone is made mincemeat.

ANT-MAN For those who didn’t grow up reading the Marvel comic, the idea of a guy with the ability to shrink to the size of an ant sounds like the opposite of what you’d want to have happen in the middle of a scuffle with an evil villain, and at the risk of sounding trite, with Paul Rudd as the leading superhero? OK, maybe nonComicon goers won’t understand till they see it, but hopefully Rudd’s comic relief ability will round out his backstory as a cunning con man and complement Corey Stoll as his nemesis, Yellowjacket, and Michael Douglas playing his guru, Dr. Hank Pym. (PG-13) 117 minutes.

INFINITELY POLAR BEAR Writer/ director Maya Forbes‘ directorial debut and arguably Mark Ruffalo’s most complex, beautifully layered role to date, Infinitely Polar Bear explores the inarguable difficulty of living as a manic depressive man in a time when it still wasn’t openly discussed—and making the decision to be a stay-at-home dad when it was socially unheard of. Ruffalo plays a father of two girls who agrees to stay home while Zoe Saldana pursues her dream at Columbia University in an artful look at mental disorders and the ins and outs of being a dad. Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, and Imogene Wolodarsky co-star. (R) 90 minutes.

MINIONS Jon Hamm said recently on The Daily Show that minions are just as appealing to adults as they are to children because “they look like capsules, they look

like pills”—and he might be right, sort of. Who can possibly resist the googly-eyed, squishy yellow minions whose shape is somewhat … comforting? Finally, the makers of children’s films have figured it out—that, and the sly adult jokes that in the minion nonsensical garble, which somehow makes perfect sense and no sense at all, are completely hilarious. This time around it’s the origin story of the adorable single-celled yellow organisms, seeking their evil villain leader from the dinosaur age to the present where they find Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock) who, with her husband Herb Overkill (Jon Hamm), hatch a plan to steal Queen Elizabeth’s crown—and then take over the world, naturally.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION At this point, audiences might be thinking it’s Tom Cruise in another of these franchise films that is truly impossible (did they get him in a lifetime deal with the devil?), although, as far as action franchises go, needing to eradicate a rogue international organization with equally skilled agents sounds creative enough. At least all the characters surrounding Cruise—from Simon Pegg’s unflinching wit to the best British pout of 2015 (we’re looking at you Rebecca Ferguson) to the incandescence of Alec Baldwin’s face— make up for the tired resurrection of Ethan Hunt. Christopher McQuarrie directs. Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jeremy Renner co-star. (PG-13) 131 minutes.

PAPER TOWNS Although Cara Delevingne’s eyebrows were the first to make a name for the young fashion model, now on virtually every surface— magazine, billboard, music video—the storyline for Paper Towns gleans interesting enough (with the Fault In Our Stars writer behind it all, we expect some tear jerking) for the coming-ofage teenage romcom. Popular and mysterious, Margo (Delevingne) is the quintessential adolescent fantasy who, after barging into Quentin’s (played

by Nat Wolff) window and wheedling him into her devious revenge plans, disappears altogether. The search to find missing Margo holds promise, although likely not due to Delevingne’s

smoldering stare—but rather the young cast with Wolff at the helm.

Oh, it gets better—Adam Sandler plays Brenner, former Pac-Man video game champion, who must use his gamer skills to save the world after aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic games as a declaration of war.

Let’s allow that to sink in.“We got this—if we don’t, the world ends,” says Sandler, and although the cast offers some comic potential to the science fiction action comedy (Peter Dinklage with a mullet? We accept.), the jury is still out on whether this is a clever parody of itself or seriously a movie about Donkey Kong and Tetris ending human civilization. Chris Columbus directs. Adam Sandler, Kevin James, and Michelle Monaghan co-star. (PG13) 105 minutes.

SOUTHPAW While Jake Gyllenhaal’s impressive physical transformation into boxer Billy Hope has been the subject of most talk show hosts’ line of questioning, the actor’s dedication to the roles that require an obsessive level of intensity is worth the oohs and aahs (although his abs are too).

With a more dominating physical presence than ever before, Gyllenhaal plays the hopelessness of Hope with a rattling intensity—an intensity that has director Antoine Fuqua’s penchant for raw thrillers written all over it, but with slightly more nuance than past works. Rachel McAdams plays Hope’s wife and Oona Laurence his young daughter, bringing softness to an otherwise bristly storyline. Kurt Sutter directs. Rachel McAdams, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Forest Whitaker costar. (R) 123 minutes.

THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT In the twenty or so years after WWII, psychology, among other fields, was dominated by an almost obsessive need to study what conditions must exist for the average person to believe so fully in a radical rhetoric that they would commit horrible atrocities—are people inherently evil or can their environment change them? So, in 1971 an ambitious

Stanford University professor by the now infamous name of Philip Zimbardo drafted an experiment to see what would happen when 24 male students were randomly sorted into role of guard and prisoner for a prison simulation. What ensued shocked and horrified him, the students, and the entire world in what has become one of the most critical and hotly critiqued studies of the twentieth century. TRAINWRECK Amy Schumer said on a recent episode of BBC’s Graham Norton Show that when she wrote Trainwreck she assumed they’d cast some skinny, blonde model type for the lead; thank the goddesses they did not.

Schumer brings her own completely bawdy brand of crass dudeness and uncensored shenanigans that only she could. Playing herself, she systematically takes down one gender stereotype after the next as she tries to escape a “real relationship” with Bill Hader despite their obvious chemistry. The classic roles of “player” and “sensitive-type” are reversed as Hader’s character attempts to pin Schumer down, with the help of LeBron James as what we can only assume is the best BFF ever. (R) 125 minutes.

Poor Chevy Chase. That must smart. This family road trip stars Ed Helms as Russell Griswold, son of the infamous Clark played by Chevy Chase in the first round of early ’80s National Lampoon’s classics. But with Christina Applegate at his side playing Debbie Griswold there may be a point to digging this one out of the ground—let’s hope they achieve even half of the bawdy absurdity that Chase and the ol’ gang delivered with effortless sincerity. John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein direct. Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Skyler Gisondo co-star. (R) 99 minutes.

W

hat a pleasure to revisit one of my old haunts, El Palomar, in the historic old Palomar Hotel (designed by architect William Weeks, who also built Santa Cruz High and the Darling House) downtown. During a spontaneous lunch with a singing buddy it was nice to discover that the booths are still large and cozy, and the lunch specials are still huge and delicious. I fell in love with El Palomar’s sopes a million years ago, and I thought I’d see if they still delivered the same old pico de gallo magic. And while I was at it,

why not add a tostada slathered in beans and melted cheese ($9)? Bev went for the lunch special combo, too, only hers was the sope and enchilada duo, plus rice and beans ($12). Our hands reached for the chips and salsa at the exact same moment. Crunching, talking, more crunching and swiftly our lunch arrived. I’m here to tell you that the delicate, feather-light sopes are still spectacular. Crisp clouds filled with guacamole, shredded cabbage, tomatoes, sour cream and diced onions and peppers. The tostada was even better. I think what I crave here is the sexy contrast

between gooey soft (melted cheese over beans), and crunchy (fried tortilla). Incredibly satisfying. No, I couldn’t finish my sope. And Bev took home the enchilada for the husband. Smart woman. Of course, the El Palomar Taco Bar (in the arcade walkway) is quick, no-frills delicious. But sometimes you just have to spread out and spend some time. For that, I suggest sliding into one of the big booths.

ention Cinnabar wines to most wine lovers, and they immediately think of their famous Mercury Rising. Mercury is extracted from cinnabar, giving this purple-red wine its catchy name.

But there’s much more to Cinnabar Winery—close to two dozen other varietals, including an ultra-smooth 2013 Pinot Noir.

The 2013 Pinot ($39) is made with grapes from Lester Family Vineyards, overseen by local expert viticulturist Prudy Foxx. Aromas of pomegranate, mushroom, clove and a hint of rose petals entice before a luscious mouthful of ripe black cherry, baking spice, vanilla and herbs greet the tongue. It all comes together perfectly in this sumptuous Pinot; accolades are due to winemaker George Troquato, who has been with Cinnabar for almost three decades.

some time ago, and the samples of delicious Indian cuisine he made were amazing. Majumdar, a judge on Iron Chef America and Cuttthroat Kitchen, is upbeat and funny. He hails from Rotherham in England—stone’s throw from my hometown of Sheffield.

I bought one of his books, “Eat My Globe,” a collection of rollicking tales of his travels through 30 countries eating a variety of dishes. This time he returns to show us how to make the quintessential cocktails of this life: Martini, Negroni, Manhattan, Sazerac, Old Fashioned, and Hemingway Daquiri. The event is from 1-5 p.m.

Are there similarities between your two specialties, coffee and wine?

CHRISTINE SHELTON: There are similarities in how you taste them.

There are similarities in the words used to describe them. But they are definitely two distinct, different crowds. It’s just one business, but it does adjust from day to night.

During the day, it looks and feels like a coffee shop. And then at 4 o’clock when the wine bar opens, the lighting changes, the music changes, the whole ambience

changes. When people come in at night, they look around and say, “Is this the same place?”

Do you pair small plates with drinks?

I do recommend different dishes for the wine that people are drinking. It’s pretty casual though. I recommend the Ca’Momi red blend from Santa Rosa with our chicken and artichoke flatbread. It’s just delicious.

You have some decadent coffees, like the Peanut Butter Mocha. What do you recommend to someone with a sweet tooth?

What’s really popular is the Blackberry White Mocha. It’s blackberry syrup with white chocolate and our espresso, milk and cream. We also have something called the Caramel Sensation. It’s a blended caramel drink, but it has caramel drizzle on it.

What I like is that we have customers come in and the wife gets a glass of wine, but maybe the husband just wants a mocha and he can have that at night. They have a choice.

ou don’t normally see a restaurant that specializes in coffee and wine. But that’s exactly what Zizzo’s has been doing ever since 2010, when husband and wife Christine Shelton and Aaron Anderson took over the business.

It’s even got an authentic piano bar (perhaps the only in the area), with live music. Zizzo’s doesn’t have a full kitchen, but they do serve small plates, sandwiches and pastries baked in-house. As of Aug. 1, Zizzo’s has expanded its live music to five nights a week (Tuesday-Saturday), and they’ll soon add a Sunday morning brunch with jazz.
