EDITOR’S NOTE In the last year, we’ve written several pieces about Santa Cruz’s current crop of tech visionaries.

Thanks to Santa Cruz Works, we’ve even seen a movement arise aimed at keeping these cutting-edge thinkers working locally, rather than losing them to the never-ending “brain drain” of the Silicon Valley tech titans.

We don’t hear a lot about videogame designers, though. I mean, a talented designer would have to be crazy to stay here, right, now that San Francisco is pretty much the national capital of video-game work?

That’s why I like Sam Working’s cover story this week on Edmund McMillen, a local game designer who fits the Santa Cruz tech aesthetic to a

T. McMillen himself is as thoughtful and unassuming as his games are challenging and audacious. The Soquel High grad has a fierce DIY ethic, and even after making it big with best friend Tim Refenes out of their Santa Cruz bedroom studio after the release of Super Meat Boy a few years ago, he continues to put ideas before commercial concerns.

As Working’s story explains, the idea for McMillen’s most recent game was his strangest yet. It flatout shouldn’t have worked; he almost purposefully seemed to create a game that would be too weird and mind-bending for the mainstream.

The result? His biggest hit yet, with almost 5 million games sold. Reading about how The Binding of Isaac came together will remind you that Santa Cruz tech doesn’t play by the rules, it rewrites them.

Thank you for making the city of Watsonville your recent cover story that included the great artwork by Kirby Scudder (GT, 7/15)! We longtime residents feel that most in the county don’t know the “real Watsonville.” It’s great for business (HQ of national companies: West Marine, Nordic Naturals, Superior Foods, Driscoll’s, California Giant Berry and Granite Construction), great for food, Yamashita Market, the only Japanese market in the county (fresh tofu on Thursdays), the Historic Appleton Grill and Ballroom, Ella’s at the Watsonville Airport, the numerous inexpensive taquerias and our Watsonville farmers market every Friday at the city plaza, where the produce is about half the cost of other farmers markets. We also have the amazing Watsonville wetlands for nature walks. I encourage everyone to come visit Watsonville; it’s only 30 minutes from Santa Cruz, and you will have a great experience. By the way, our famous Strawberry Festival is Aug, 1 and 2 in downtown. Hope to see you here soon!

I just read the terrific front-page article, Overdue South, in your July 15 issue. It is very exciting to read about the energy and money being poured into revitalizing downtown Watsonville. However, there was one big oversight. Nowhere does the article mention the arts as a player in this lovely city. Yet, one block away from downtown is the Pajaro Valley Arts Gallery, which presents six to seven vibrant, high-quality art shows each year, many featuring local artists. The organization also reaches out to the PVUSD in numerous ways, and has representation on a number of community boards and interest groups. Yet there was no mention of PVAC or of the arts, and even Kirby Scudder left this beautiful gallery, Watsonville’s only visual arts venue, out of his “artistic rendering.”

It is shortsighted for communities to not recognize the tremendous economic and cultural advantages that a thriving arts organization brings to a downtown area.

As a member of the Board of Directors of PVAC, I can say that all of us are looking for opportunities for more partnership with the community and more visibility downtown.

Those who drive Highway 1 may soon find themselves thinking of a legendary local politician. On Friday, July 24, Assemblymember Luis Alejo will be dedicating a four-mile stretch of the highway to former Watsonville legislator Henry J. Mello, who died in 2004. Mello, who served as senate majority leader, advocated for land preservation, gay rights and senior citizens.

President Barack Obama recognized students from Watsonville this month for efforts in environmental stewardship and education.

The winners of the President’s Environmental Youth Award (PEYA) included last year’s fifth grade class at Mount Madonna School, for their year-long campaign titled “Don’t be a Nurdle, Help the Sea Turtle: Poaching, Bycatch & Plastic Pollution, Tell the World About Our Solution.”

SURF NOTE The cover story in your July 1 issue offers an intriguing look at the three Hawaiian princes who brought their surfboards to Santa Cruz in 1885. These young men could not have imagined their influence on the subsequent

history of this town and of surfing in general, which is the focus of the article. The authors briefly mention the “profound cultural and political transition in Hawaii” in the years following the men’s first visit. In fact, on Jan. 14, 1893, the U.S. “minister” in Hawaii conspired with a small group of non-native armed residents to overthrow the legitimate, popular government of the islands. Five years later, the U.S. officially annexed Hawaii through a joint resolution of Congress. There has not yet been a treaty and the native Hawaiians have not been compensated for the theft of their land, their culture, their dignity, and their human rights.

How do you feel right now?

Nimmo: It’s kind of overwhelming [laughs].

We’re seeing all this stuff, very little of which we understand, and so we’re trying to piece together the bits of the jigsaw puzzle and make sense of it all. There is so much information that it takes time to assimilate it and get it all into your head.

What’s been the biggest surprise?

To me, Pluto looks much more interesting and much more active than I expected. I expected it to be relatively uninteresting. I expected it to look like Callisto (a Jupiter moon), which is heavily cratered but not very active, whereas Pluto looks like it’s been active quite recently and it has all kinds of features on the surface that we really don’t understand at all >14

L

ike many stories, it started with a question. When I asked my landlord what he thought about Airbnb.com—the DIY vacation rental website—his response was more informed and impassioned than I could have imagined.

In his eyes, the town’s growing slew of vacation rentals takes away valuable housing from the city, while also competing unfairly with established hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Obviously, there are mom-and-pop vacation rentals on Airbnb, too, he says, conceding that those are the ones more in line with the site’s reputation.

“But that’s not always what’s going on,” adds my landlord, who requested his name be withheld due to the sensitivity of this topic. “There are realtors and other investors that are

looking at the income stream they could have if they bought a property for tourists, which takes housing stock away from the city. If you’re in the system as a traditional inn, you’re getting nit-picked all the time by the city. You’re getting audited and taxed and inspected and sometimes fined.

That doesn’t happen with Airbnb.”

In the new sharing economy, local governments across the country are trying to figure out how to deal with such websites. And of course, everyone has an opinion.

It isn’t difficult to see the appeal of Airbnb. For around $100 a night, a couple can live like royalty with an ocean view in a home they might otherwise never be able to afford.

Meanwhile, homeowners, by posting an online listing, can rent out a spare

bedroom for tourists to help with steep mortgage payments. Or they can rent out their entire home when they leave for weeks at a time to help finance a vacation of their own.

But there may be deeper issues embedded within online vacation rental sites like Airbnb—perhaps including the future of our neighborhoods. Santa Cruz Vice Mayor Cynthia Mathews says she is concerned about protecting the city’s housing supply and doesn’t want to see too many homes turned into vacation spots. She adds that locals worried about vacation rentals have been emailing to say that they don’t want their neighborhoods overrun by tourists.

Francis Nimmo is the spaciest guy in Santa Cruz, at least for the past few weeks. As one of an elite group of researchers working on the first satellite to visit Pluto and the solar system beyond, the UCSC astronomer has been James T. Kirk-like, exploring strange new worlds and boldly going where no one has gone before.

It’s taken nine years and $722 million for the piano-sized New Horizons satellite to travel three billion miles to Pluto, and Nimmo, now stationed in a Maryland command center, was one of the first to see the photos it sent back when it reached the closest point on July 14. Now, it will travel out of our solar system.

Born in England and schooled at Cambridge University as a geologist, Nimmo, 44, became interested in the heavens after hearing a lecture about space exploration from an American professor who talked about studying Venus.

It inspired him to do a project on Venus and study planetary geology. He’s taught planetary sciences, including what the planets are made of and their atmospheres, at UCSC for the past decade. Nimmo’s main job on the project is to determine the size of Pluto and its moon Charon, as well as whether they are perfect spheres.

So far, only two percent of the data from the probe has been analyzed, but Nimmo says the results have been worth the effort. His team spends long days looking at data, meeting in the mornings and analyzing photos and math long into the night. GT caught up with him by phone this week.

Santa Cruz County and the city of Santa Cruz have been looking at regulations for vacation rentals. The city may restrict what kinds of units may be used for short-term rentals.

For instance, the city will discuss whether or not accessory dwelling units, or ADUs—converted garages and “granny units”—should be allowed to be rented out to tourists, as they currently are. Meanwhile, the county is looking to better track vacation properties and collect transient occupancy taxes (TOT)—the same ones hotels have to pay. In addition, the county has passed limits on the amount of vacation rentals allowed in certain neighborhoods.

The discussion doesn’t look to be over yet. From San Diego to Manhattan, communities have been grappling with a list of tough issues related to the DIY rental trend.

First is the issue of housing supply.

Especially in expensive communities like the Bay Area, New York and even Santa Cruz—some of the least affordable rental markets in the country—government leaders like Mathews want to prioritize housing long-term renters over tourists.

The second concern is a land-use one. Santa Cruz homes are normally built in residential zones, while hotels and motels are usually in commercial ones. When someone starts a de facto bed and breakfast, one could argue that the host is essentially running a commercial enterprise—with all the impacts that come with it, parking and otherwise.

The last piece of this political puzzle is that traditional inns must abide by a long list of guidelines—almost none of which apply to Airbnb listings.

For example, a new inn has to go through an exhaustive public process, including public hearings and pricey applications. And once open, they’re subject to a different level of public scrutiny.

INSIDE STORY Susan, a popular host on Airbnb,

started renting out a wing in her Westside home almost two years ago and couldn’t be happier. “We love it.

I think it’s a wonderful company,” says Susan, who requested that her last name not be used. “They have our backs. They give us $1 million in insurance. It’s the only vacation rental site I’d participate in.”

Susan charges about half of what a motel might on a busy summer night, and also collects TOT, which she pays to the city. She says she never would have rented out the space for a longterm tenant, so her operation isn’t taking away any housing. But still, she sympathizes with anyone looking for an affordable place to live. “I feel their pain. This is a hostile rental market,” she says.

A company spokesperson from Airbnb says that when it comes down to it, Airbnb is providing an important tool to everyday homeowners.

“Home-sharing allows people to turn what is typically one of their greatest expenses into a tool to help make ends meet,” Airbnb’s Alison Schumer says in an emailed statement. “While most hosts use Airbnb to pay the bills, their guests generate sustainable local economic activity that >16

Its “Horological Smartwatches” were recently profiled in the New York Times, as a way to combine the beauty of precise Swiss timepieces with motion detectors and exercise trackers with a two-year battery life. One line manufactured

by Swiss watchmaker Frederique Constant sells for $1,000-$1,400.

On the lower end, Jawbone is using Kahn’s MotionX technology in a sleep and exercise tracking device called UP Move, which sells for $50.

Kahn, who was educated in France, says he fell in love with Santa Cruz the minute he saw it.

It’s probably the most expensive help-wanted sign around. Santa Cruz’s Fullpower Technologies is spending $25,000 a month to rent the county’s only billboard, which was grandfathered in years back after other unsightly billboards were torn down.

Some 61,000 people a day pass the sign, which faces southbound traffic just past the summit on Highway 17.

Company owner Philippe Kahn says he hopes it will attract the best engineers for his growing company, founded in 2003, which makes wearable technology such as watches that track fitness and built-in bed sleep monitors.

“We are looking for the most talented professional

technologists in Silicon Valley and some of them commute over the hill,” says Kahn. “With Fullpower, they now have a key opportunity in Santa Cruz. Downtown! We create technology that changes the world for the better.”

The billboard was an unconventional approach.

“It’s an expensive proposition, but well worth it to find the best talent,” Kahn says. “We are hiring as many talented, passionate firmware, server, iOS/Android engineers that are at the top of their game as we can find. I’d love to hire 100, but realistically, the new superstar team members that we are looking for takes time to find. Talented, passionate team players are everything.”

right now. There are enormous canyons on Charon that are as big as the Grand Canyon, and Pluto has mountains of ice that are as big as the Rocky Mountains. There are some bits of Pluto that are smooth and look new, so there’s some active geological processes.

It’s not a dead world at all. There’s probably some kind of energy source down there and what that means is that one of the things life needs, apart from water, is some kind of energy source. Pluto must be relatively warm, and that’s a good thing for making a habitable environment.

Why is it important to go to Pluto?

One way to think about it is it’s filling in the last bit of unknown on the map of the solar system. Every other appreciable science body we’ve been to, but nobody had any idea of what Pluto looked like. It was a pixel in the Hubble telescope. Now, it’s a world. We’re starting to understand it on a level that we understand all the other bodies in the solar system.

What’s the biggest difference between Pluto and the other bodies?

Pluto is half ice and half rock. There are other places like that, such as the moons of Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus. The big difference is that other moons are orbiting something much bigger than themselves so they get affected by the tides of the big body they are orbiting.

Those tides can cause heating and fracturing.

Pluto is not orbiting anything big, and so, in a sense, it’s a controlled experiment. What does an icy body look like with no tides acting?

When you get to the far reaches of the solar system, does it make you think there has to be more life out there?

As a general statement, there are two things that have changed since I was in high school.

The first huge change is that we now know there are planets everywhere. When I was in high school 30 years ago, we didn’t actually know there were planets anywhere except this solar system. Now we know they are everywhere. The other big change is that there are oceans on many, many of these icy moons. And that’s a big

change, because it means that liquid water is far more common in the solar system than we had expected. It’s not just found in this narrow band of the Earth, and liquid water is thought to be one of the prerequisites for having life.

Does that mean the odds are better of more life in the universe?

I think there’s got to be life somewhere in the universe. At this point, with so many other planets, I can’t imagine that there isn’t life somewhere. Now, whether it’s detectable, that’s another question. There’s a big difference between life, which might mean algae, or life like us. So, saying there’s life out there is a weak statement. Saying there’s intelligent life is much stronger. Finding something like algae out there is impossible with today’s technology, but in 20 years we may have the tools to see something like chlorophyll.

And what about intelligent life?

That’s a much harder thing to think about.

How long does intelligent life survive, right? If civilizations only last a few hundred years before they destroy themselves, then, maybe it’s not

out there. That’s a very hard calculation to make.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

For me, Star Wars, because I was at an impressionable age when it came out. It was the second movie I ever saw, and frankly I don’t think I’ve seen a movie that’s as good since.

How is it that we can get data from Pluto, but I can’t make a call from the beach in Santa Cruz?

Yes, right. The disparity is that you are not carrying around a 200-foot diameter aerial on your cell phone. That’s what’s listening in to New Horizons. It’s a 200-foot diameter dish, so it can collect a lot of signals.

If you had a chance to go on a space shuttle, would you?

Absolutely. And, you know, if somebody offered me a one-way trip to Mars, I would take that, too.

Seriously? Do you have a family?

I do have a family, so maybe I really wouldn’t.

Things change when you have a family. But it would be way cool.

Providing reasonable housing prices in a tourist town is no small task. That’s why the Santa Cruz City Council has been working for the past few years to encourage more people to build back units, or ADUs, to create more housing.

In order to protect that housing supply, the council heard a proposal during a May meeting to forbid such units from being used as shortterm rentals. At public comment, homeowners pleaded with the council not to adopt that change—many of them explaining that they would not have been able to afford buying a home in the first place if they had known they couldn’t use the ADU for Airbnb.

They told the council their stories.

Joe Collins, a local philanthropist and author, has donated $40,000 in vacation rent collected from the unit behind his house. Collins says he would never rent the unit out longterm, because he likes family and friends to stay there sometimes.

The council chose to delay the vote.

Some councilmembers want to forbid short-term rentals in any new ADUs, while grandfathering in any existing units, as long as the owners had been paying their TOT. In the past few years, the county’s Board of Supervisors has implemented caps on the number of vacation rentals in the Live Oak, Aptos and Seacliff areas. Vacation rentals won’t be allowed in more than 15 percent of each of those areas or in more than 20 percent of one block.

Also last month, the county board voted to require Airbnb hosts to list their TOT certificate number on their webpage, as a way to keep track of who’s up-to-date on their taxes. First District Supervisor John Leopold hopes that will make it easier to find any problem rentals.

“It will be a lot easier to identify those people that are not playing by the rules, who are operating as an illegal hotel or lodging facility,” Leopold said at the meeting, “and we’ll be able to take action.”

How a Santa Cruz designer created one of the most unlikely hits in video game history

dmund McMillen still sports the same calm blue eyes, unassuming smile and Melvins T-shirt as the struggling, unknown game developer he once was, trying to get by with his friend Tommy Refenes in their bedroom studio. But the 35-year-old McMillen, who has lived in Santa Cruz all his life, has been anything but complacent since the wild success of his independent title Super Meat Boy in 2010. After designing a number of award-winning games like Gish, Coil and Aether, and forming the indie game company Team Meat with Refenes, McMillen is now experiencing his biggest and most unexpected

success yet with The Binding of Isaac and its multiplatform expansion from the end of last year, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

Full of dark satire and disturbing imagery, The Binding of Isaac is the kind of unlikely hit that only McMillen could dream up. For him, it was a chance to return to his game-making roots.

“I wanted to do something to relax, but also prove that I was still independent,” says McMillen. “Before Meat Boy, I had been making games without caring about money, or getting on a platform. Even though Meat Boy stayed true to what I was doing, it was still

very safe. It was the least risky of all the projects I could do, because I wanted to try and make a future.

I did some really weird stuff back in the day, and I wanted to be able to prove that I was still able to do that. I didn’t have to worry about pleasing everybody.”

Even the way The Binding of Isaac was released was unorthodox, at least for a developer as successful as McMillen. It was released as a small, unpolished game, meaning that big-name console deals like the ones they got for Super Meat Boy were out of the question. Independent developers can license their games to websites like Adult Swim or Newgrounds for a one-time payout, but the most popular and effective indie platform is a digital-distribution service called Steam. It allows users to purchase games from the biggest and smallest names in the industry; they can be browsed and demoed for free, but most cost money to download. Although McMillen had his reservations about submitting such an unpolished game to the marketplace, the positive reaction from friends convinced him to go through with it.

“I thought it would maybe be like a midnight movie, with a small user base that really likes it, since I love

Steam liked what they saw, and McMillen put it up for sale for $5.

At first, The Binding of Isaac got a lukewarm reception—a few people were playing it, but first-day sales were weak.

McMillen was not surprised.

The mechanics and style of Isaac are unlike any other game, and he designed it to be extremely difficult.

Opening with a child named Isaac running to his basement to escape his fervently religious, knifewielding mother—a twisted modern take on on the Biblical story of Abraham and Isaac—the game leaves the player, as Isaac, to figure out how to defeat deformed-fetus enemies using the tears that shoot from his eyes, and gather powerups that hilariously mutate his body to defeat disgustingly designed bosses like “the gurgles.”

The Binding of Isaac is also a “randomly generated” game, meaning that every time the character dies, the game restarts with a completely different experience; untried enemies, new

tools and a different dungeon to explore.

“Nothing like Isaac was really available at all in the gameplay sense, and theme-wise there was nothing like it,” says McMillen.

“Going in, all signs were that this game was not going to do well.

How was I going to get anyone to purchase it, much less play it?”

Usually, a game’s first-day sales are a good indicator of how it will perform from that point forward.

But in keeping with McMillen’s odd career trajectory, Isaac was the exact opposite. After a few months, the game seemed to find its audience, and he started to notice a steady climb of users—100 people a day were buying it, then 500 people a day, than 5,000 people a day.

To date, The Binding of Isaac and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth have sold almost 5 million copies—3 million more than his breakout title Super Meat Boy.

THE BINDING OF EDMUND MCMILLEN <20 Isaac, McMillen teamed up with Florian Himsl, a designer with whom he had worked on some of his more graphic and risque games.

Although McMillen wanted to do something very different for this game, his central inspiration for Isaac still came from the same man who had inspired him throughout his career: Shigeru Miyamoto. A legendary Japanese game designer who began working for Nintendo in 1977, Miyamoto created some of the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most recognizable franchises, including Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. Super Meat Boy was McMillenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homage to the former, and with Isaac he set his sights on re-imagining the latterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; one of the most beloved video games of all time.

While there have been many iterations and sequels since, the original Zelda: A Link to the Past follows Link, a young warrior who is given the task of rescuing his homeland Hyrule and the Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon. Miyamoto based the game on his sense of exploration as a child, and in order to do justice to the title, McMillen had to turn inward for his own inspiration, as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had been thinking a lot about â&#x20AC;&#x2122;80s Christian propaganda and the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;video games are evilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; movement,â&#x20AC;?

McMillen says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;More or less the whole feeling like an outcast as a kid. If Miyamoto wrote about his childhood loosely with Zelda, discovering things and turning over rocks, what is my truth there? If Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to remix Zelda with my aesthetics, then I wanted to add my own themes and experiences as well.â&#x20AC;?

Growing up, McMillen says, he had two significant religious influences. One was his grandmother, who was very Catholic in the spiritual sense, but not overbearing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I always thought of my grandma as a mystic,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She would light candles, cast spells and talk about stories like Revelations and other creative things that I found very interesting and would draw from.â&#x20AC;?

On holidays, however, McMillenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side of the family would come into the picture, and he describes them as fire and brimstone-type Christians. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Anything I watched or played was bad,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember them turning off Ren and Stimpy, and telling me that Dungeons and Dragons would make kids kill each other. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s weird to be young like that and have an understanding of how wrong they are about some of these things. As a young boy, having a bunch of people tell me that there are all these supposedly wicked things out there just made me more interested.â&#x20AC;?

Ironically, as he worked on the game he started to think somewhat differently about the effect his religious upbringing had on him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was writing all this, I started to realize how there is a duality to it for me, where it did make me feel like an outcast and like I did not fit in, but in doing so it made me feel unique and like I had something to offer,â&#x20AC;? he says.

MEAT THE TEAM The process of creating The Binding of Isaac was also unusual in that it did not involve McMillenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Team Meat partner, Tommy Refenes. He was on vacation when the project was conceived, and by the time he returned, he felt that it would be unfair to Himsl if he stepped in.

But McMillen and Refenes have made their name in the video game industry together.

They spent the better part of two years painstakingly creating and programming Super Meat Boy all by themselves, culminating in a 30-day mad dash to finish in time for Microsoftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Game Feast,â&#x20AC;? an Xbox Live advertising campaign designed to promote smaller, cheaper, arcadelike games for direct download right to usersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; consoles. While both had made video games before, Super Meat Boy wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a flash game played in your Internet browser, or a game designed for a small audience. The two friends were independently building a game that was expected

Super Meat Boy became the most popular game on Xbox Live Arcade, garnered the second-highest score on Metacritic (an Internet Movie Database for video games), and sold upward of 2 million copies.

Its success quickly launched the small Santa Cruz game studio into the national spotlight, as blogs and major media outlets like The Wall Street Journal were clamoring for interviews with the minds behind Meat Boy. Shorty after the game’s debut, a documentary called Indie Game: The Movie was released, which followed Team Meat as they created the game. It won the best documentary award at Sundance, and further thrust Super Meat Boy and its developers into the spotlight.

CONSOLING HIMSELF The summer following the original release of The Binding Of Isaac, McMillen released an expansion that almost doubled the content of

to be released for wide distribution on one of the most popular video game consoles in the world, and in order to make that happen they stayed up days at a time to reach art deadlines and programming goals, while climbing deeper into debt as they essentially worked for free, for themselves.

But on the morning of the release date that they had all but killed themselves to meet, not only was Super Meat Boy not prominently displayed on the Xbox Live front page as promised, it was also nowhere to be found in the marketplace, at all. For a video game developer, this is the equivalent of expecting your product to be lining the shelves in a store’s most visible aisles, when in actuality the customer now has to find a manager and ask them to dig one up from the back room.

After phone calls with Microsoft, though, the game went up, and Super Meat Boy went on to sell 22,000 copies in its first day alone.

the game—more enemies, cool new items, and artfully designed boss fights—and the game truly hit its stride. By the end of summer 2012, Isaac had surpassed the sales of Super Meat Boy. However, even though millions of people were playing, it was still an unrated game that McMillen and Himsl had spent only a few months making, and it was only available on PC, meaning a lot of the console players who enjoyed Super Meat Boy were unable to play it. McMillen wanted to bring the game to a wider audience, and realized that this might be his chance to finally get a game on a Nintendo platform.

McMillen teamed up with the studio

Niclaus, which was experienced in adapting and remaking computer games to be played on console. What was supposed to be a year-long project quickly stretched into two years, as McMillen worked the kinks out of his passion-project-turnedblockbuster.

“I had felt cheated many times when people re-released games,” he says. “I didn't just want it to be a revamped game, especially since I had to charge three times the price.

I wanted to give people a reason to buy it again.”

During this process, an interesting conversation started to emerge surrounding the game. Although it was adapted directly from a Bible

story and re-imagined in cartoon humor, it was making some in the industry nervous. In Germany, Isaac was given a 16+ rating for â&#x20AC;&#x153;potentially blasphemous content.â&#x20AC;?

And after initially promising talks with Nintendo, the game was denied access to their platforms by headquarters in Japan, perhaps not surprising, considering Nintendoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generally family-friendly approach.

McMillen was understanding, but the Internet, as usual, was not.

These decisions prompted heated discussions on forums and between video game writers everywhere about who gets to decide what blasphemy is, and why any one religion should supercede others

in determining the definition.

For instance, Hindus may find it blasphemous to kill a cow, yet thousands of games have cow killings, and they are not considered blasphemous by these rating systems.

But the demand for the game was clearly there, and after two years of hard work The Binding of Isaac was ready for release on consoles.

In November of 2014, The Binding of Isaac was released on Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita Handheld, with the XBox One version slated for release in 2015. Even more importantly for McMillen, after more than 10 years of making games,with dozens of titles released, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll finally be releasing a game on his childhood heroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s platform, Nintendo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For whatever reason, after the expansion came out, Nintendo decided to change some of its policies, and now Isaac will be released on the Nintendo 3Ds in the next few months,â&#x20AC;? he says.

What is perhaps most impressive out of all of this is that McMillen didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t plan or expect any of the success heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had with The Binding of Isaac. He merely set out to have an honest conversation with himself about religion, and make a fun video game while he was at itâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and in the process, his game became the catalyst for people all over the world to have that same conversation with themselves, as well. For McMillen, the point is not only to create games that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proud of, but also games that would have inspired and nurtured him as a conflicted child. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I know that there is a kid out there who stayed up all night long for the game to come out, and then stayed home from school the next day so he could play it,â&#x20AC;? McMillen says, in an emotional scene from Indie Game: The Movie. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To think that I could make something that could have a creative impact on this kid so he thinks, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hey, two guys made this, maybe I can make something, too,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just cool. It feels really, really good.â&#x20AC;?

annah Lash started composing music at the age of 4, and in less than 30 years she has hit full stride. Lash will complete several dozen commissioned works during this year, perform her own harp concerto at Carnegie Hall, and

bring the world premiere of her orchestral piece Eating Flowers to next month’s Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. Currently on the Music Composition faculty at Yale University, Lash’s expanding output is filled with magic, rigor and invention for voice, solo

instrument, chamber orchestra and opera. Lash was chosen by celebrated composer John Adams to create this year’s commission for Marin Alsop and the Cabrillo Festival orchestra.

“John is one of my biggest heroes,” Lash says. “I so admire

how brave he is, and the commission was very meaningful for me.” The invitation came last autumn, at which time Lash says she “started from scratch” to create the short composition for full orchestra.

down and being very quiet for a long while,” Lash says. “I know it sounds a bit mystical, but I let the ideas come to me. A tasty seed has to be there—tasty enough to grow more things. Once it’s there, I begin.”

In this case, Lash began with a rhythmic pitched-percussion pattern. “I decided to work with it, it was definitely a strong thread,” she says. The creation of Eating Flowers, says Lash, both did and did not come easily. “I was inspired for sure, but I also worked very hard at it,” she says. “Writing for a full orchestra, with triple winds and full complement of percussion was a huge and wonderful challenge.

My job was to make full use of the orchestra, without overwhelming the initial inspiration.”

Lash describes the style she invokes as resonant timbres. “I amplify colors to a large extent— the color palette of the sound, but also the harmonic palette,” Lash says. “All my compositions have a common DNA that’s fairly recognizable.” That palette has been called “striking” and “introspective” by the attentive media.

“I love full orchestras, and I find myself attracted to that much possibility of sound and complexity,” Lash says. “To a certain extent I find my greatest strength lies in orchestral music.”

Having said that, Lash confesses that she has three operas in the works right now. “I’m fortunate.

I fall in love with each different project. Each one I’m working on becomes my favorite,” she says.

But of all the instruments, the harp—her primary instrument—is high on her list. As if the professor and mother of a 3-year-old weren’t already balancing many full plates, Lash admits to practicing the harp “five to six hours a day,” in preparation for performing her

own harp concerto this October at Carnegie Hall.

Music was always her calling.

“For a little while modern dance was a serious contender, but I eventually felt that I wouldn’t have served music fully that way,” says Lash.

Famed for polyphonic compositions that engage in dialogue with the masterworks of Josquin de Prez, Lash has built exquisite tonal structures “preserving 16th century rules, but with a tiny bit more chromatics.” Renaissance composers make work Lash calls “ravishingly beautiful. Even though there are rules to this sort of structure, for me the rules aren’t so rigid, as they are the way a living organism grows.”

“I do try for beauty,” Lash admits.

“I wouldn’t want to write music if it weren’t beautiful.” Lash has favorite composers, such as Mozart, Haydn, the Baroque—“I can never get enough Bach”—and moving forward in time, “Schubert, Schumann, Mahler—Bartók is huge for me,” she says. Influences upon her work include the avant garde legend György Ligeti, and living composers Aaron Kernis and John Adams, as well as her mentor in composition studies, Martin Breznik.

“Yes,” says Lash, happily. “I am full up on commissions—it’s really an adrenaline rush.” Lash agrees that composers of new music have to work to win audiences. “You have to woo people a bit, convince them you’re not trying to alarm them.

If you have a commission you feel a bit more loved. I have a definite OCD streak,” she says with a laugh.

“I finished the Cabrillo commission way in advance.” On Aug. 15 we’ll get to hear the results.

In Too Deep Even floodwaters can’t keep Pokey LaFarge from tunneling into the history of early American roots music BY CAT JOHNSON blues, listening to Skip James, Sleepy John Estes, and the like. In these artists, he found something real.

“It felt like there was something deeper, and honest, and human, and timeless about it all,” he says. “Perhaps there were some qualities in the older forms of music that I thought were missing in some of the things I was being exposed to.”

LaFarge’s attraction to early American roots and blues stuck, and he’s made a career as one of the few young artists to really delve into early country blues and jazz, with plunky banjos, clarinets, cornets, and complex emotions concealed in simple lyrics. There’s no shortage of roots bands around, but, as with

LaFarge, the field gets much smaller when you trace stylistic influences back to lesser-known artists such as Tampa Red or Howard “Louie Bluie” Armstrong.

LaFarge credits his own emergence into the spotlight with his work with rock superstar and vinyl evangelist Jack White. After hearing LaFarge on WSM 650 AM, home of the Grand Ole Opry, White called LaFarge and asked if he’d like to record for his label, Third Man Records. White also took LaFarge on tour with him for 16 shows.

“It certainly was good for business,” says LaFarge. “But I also gained some good friends in that whole crew. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for Jack and Third Man.”

okey LaFarge is in his office in St. Louis, Missouri, dealing with an unexpected mess. The singersongwriter has just walked in and found the place flooded.

“It’s been raining like hell for about a week,” he tells me over the phone, explaining that flooding comes with the territory when you live in river country. With his strong Midwestern accent, friendly demeanor, and downhome expressions, I can’t help but feel like I’m talking to someone from the past—and LaFarge’s music backs that up.

When other kids his age were listening to Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube, LaFarge was getting into the early

The experience gave him a deep appreciation of his Midwestern home.

“I don’t think you can appreciate where you’re from unless you get away from where you’re from,” he says. “Whether you’re from St. Louis and living in San Francisco, or you’re from San Francisco and living in St. Louis, I think there’s different perspectives from people who never leave and people who do leave and then come back.”

LaFarge’s appreciation for St. Louis is rooted, in part, in the city’s rich history—musical and otherwise. On the migratory route between New Orleans and Chicago, St. Louis was a hotbed for jazz in the early-to-mid-1900s.

During that time, some Midwesterners were packing up and heading, like the Joads in The Grapes of Wrath, to California. LaFarge speculates that Californians may soon be heading back to the Midwest, where housing is still affordable, there’s plenty of water, and there’s a thriving cultural scene. He’s working on a new song about a reverse, drought-driven migration, titled “The New Dustbowl.”

Despite his strong historic inclination, LaFarge doesn’t lock himself into strictly playing old-style music. He hints that his next album will not necessarily follow in the same country blues vein.

“It’s important to realize that this is just a present incarnation of my music, and my music will continue to evolve,” he says, explaining that he’s starting to sound more original and less traditional. “I think I’m starting to become even more of my own musician. That’ll be fun to see, and also fun to hear the critics chatter.”

For now, though, LaFarge is sticking to the matters at hand.

“I’m going to go,” he says, “and get back to mopping up the floor in my office.”

Indie duo Wye Oak reinvent themselves on ‘Shriek’ BY AARON CARNES

ust about everything Baltimore duo Wye Oak were known for— heavily dynamic songwriting; folk-rock instrumentation; hooky, passionate melodies—went out the window on last year’s Shriek.

For longtime fans of the band, it was a little confusing what exactly the band, made up of Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, was doing. Singer-guitarist Wasner doesn’t even play guitar on the album, which had up to that point been a defining aspect to their sound.

The duo was suddenly mixing bass, keys, percussion and electronics in a much more understated way than they had in the past.

“We wanted to see if we could make a record that was more subtle and nuanced, that didn’t necessarily reach

out and take you by the throat, like those huge crescendos would,” Wasner says. “It’s not a synth-pop record. It’s not a rock record. It doesn’t fit any of those boxes. I think when people don’t know how to immediately categorize something, some people find that really unpleasant and confusing.”

Formed in 2006, the duo first garnered attention in the indie world with their third LP, Civilian, released

by Merge Records in 2011. Music bloggers loved it, the title track—a heart-wrenching, indie-folk tune with extreme loud and quiet sections that would make the Pixies proud—got placement in a handful of shows, including AMC’s zombie hit The Walking Dead, and they toured nonstop. But after a couple of years of

heavily promoting the record, Wasner felt creatively stifled.

“In the past, we wrote a lot for our live shows. One trick that works is the big bursts of volume. That was something we as a two-piece took advantage of—it made it on our records, too. I think Andy and I both felt that we had exhausted everything we could do with that,” Wasner says.

A lot of music publications reported that Wasner grew sick of the guitar, which isn’t really the case, she explains. She was used to writing songs on a single instrument, and felt like she’d run out of ideas doing it that way, regardless of instrument. What did appeal to her was tracking multilayered songs on her computer. Shriek is not only different because it’s so

centered on keyboards and electronic bass, but also in the careful crafting of the songs.

“I was able to capture more complex ideas from the start, during the actual writing stage of the process, as opposed to sitting down with a guitar and strumming a few chords and writing a melody to it,” Wasner says.

“I was able to work with—through the magic of technology—any instrument I desired as I was writing. It changed the way I was able to write. Honestly it changed my life.”

This process was necessary too, as Stack moved first to Portland, then to the small artist community of Marfa, Texas, with Wasner staying in Baltimore. She was able to craft entire songs and email them to Stack, and they could work on them that way.

However, Wasner says, even if Stack hadn’t moved, this is exactly how they would have written Shriek. It was just what was working for her.

The overall reception to Shriek has been mixed. The melodies are surreal, and the production is spacey and ethereal, with a much more gentle, almost new-age synth-rock ’80s sound.

But the band members are really happy with the record, and think it’s their best songwriting to date.

“It wasn’t a step forward from a sales perspective or a notoriety perspective. To be honest with you, Andy and I kind of melt down under that level of scrutiny. We would both be very content to operate in that middle realm indefinitely. I think we both feel very strongly that bigger is not necessarily better,” Wasner says.

Wasner says the next album could be completely different. She doesn’t really know.

“The second you find a formula that works, it doesn’t work anymore.

You have to keep yourself on your toes. I feel like there are people that hear what we went through to make it, and they’re like, ‘Oh that makes perfect sense,’” Wasner says. “We’re making records for us, and hopefully some other people. People are going to love it, and hate it. People are going to change their minds. I have always loved it, and that means more to me than anything.”

D’OH BROTHERS Considering their name is taken from one of the show’s most famous catchphrases, it should come as no surprise that the Do’h Brothers are major fans of The Simpsons.

“I used to have a whole room in my house with a bunch of Simpsons stuff—it’s become my daughter’s room at this point,” says guitarist/vocalist Dave Muldawer. “We wanted to come up with some sort of Simpsons thing.

Nobody ever gets the name. They call us the Dough Boys or the Dill Brothers.”

The band plays a wide array of danceable rock covers by groups like Dire Straits, the Cars, the Kinks, Foreigner, and Don Henley, as well as some original rock tunes.

“I see myself as a songwriter along the lines of Steve Miller, Tom Petty and Bob Seger,” says Muldawer. “If our originals were made back in the ’70s, they’d fit right in there.”

Muldawer first got together with bassist Greg Brown in 2007 to record roughly 25 originals. Their sessions turned into a band, and they played primarily original tunes, developing a modest following. After their drummer moved, they played less frequently until they replaced him in 2013.

“When we got going again, people wanted to hear more covers than originals. So we switched from doing 80 percent originals to 80 percent covers,” Muldawer says.

A lot of their shows feature several sets; they bust out the louder, more danceable songs later in the evening, always squeezing in some originals.

“Sometimes you try a song and the dance floor becomes less crowded.

On her latest album, Pretty Bird, singer-songwriter Cosy Sheridan sings, “Rise out of the water / I will believe in the cup of human kindness.” It’s a sentiment grounded in warmth, vision, and a connectedness to all things. So it goes with Sheridan, who has been writing thought-provoking, acoustic guitar-driven songs about the Earth and our place on it and the beauty of life for decades. But don’t write her off as a folkie softie.

The Moab, Utah-based Sheridan is also a funny, button-pushing artist who doesn’t shy away from sensitive issues, environmental or otherwise.

Case in point: her song “Turboyeast,” about vaginal yeast infections, which broke the folk singer mold and was featured on the Dr. Demento radio program. CAT JOHNSON

San Francisco’s the She’s quickly became a buzz band around the bay while the quartet was still in high school. Indeed, their 2011 record Then It Starts To Feel Like Summer captures the joy and sadness of their young age with some really catchy, surfy dreampop tunes. They’ve graduated high school, and their most recent record, last year’s Dreamers, has a heavier edge to it. The songs are still hooky ’60s surf-rock loving, but the distortion is a little louder, and the songs are a little more dissonant. Even their video for single “Dream Girl” is a total psychedelic blur. AARON CARNES

I

n the canon of famous literary characters, few have been so gleefully adulterated over the years as Sherlock Holmes. The brilliant, eccentric “consulting detective,” first conceived of by Arthur Conan Doyle in the 1880s, has proved irresistible to countless other writers trying their hands at Holmesian-style tales, among many other multimedia adventurers. In the famous series of mystery films of the ’40s, Holmes was enlisted in the fight against Hitler. Two popular current TV series update Holmes to the present day.

So, the new movie, Mr. Holmes, joins a longstanding tradition of adapting the character to suit the needs of a new author or agenda, presenting an elderly Holmes in retirement as he attempts to solve

one last case. Based on the Mitch Cullin novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher (Stage Beauty), it reunites star Ian McKellen and director Bill Condon, almost two decades after their successful collaboration on Gods And Monsters. It is, in many ways, a lovely, lyrical film about aging, loss, and redemption, although it settles for an overall tone of wistfulness, instead of the deeper resonance it might have had.

The framing story begins in 1947, with McKellen’s craggy, truly ancient-seeming Holmes returning to his stone farm cottage and beehives on the Sussex Downs after a trip to postwar Japan. Retired from detective work for the past 25 years, he’s gone to Japan in search of a rare herbal compound

he hopes will improve his declining mental faculties. After years of enduring Dr. Watson’s fictitious embellishments about him (like the deerstalker hat and the pipe; “I prefer a cigar,” he says), Holmes is determined to write a story of his own.

Holmes’ household is run by his Irish housekeeper, Mrs. Munro (Laura Linney), a war widow whose young son Roger (Milo Parker) is an avid reader and fan of Watson’s stories. (He’s always begging Holmes to “do that thing you do,” deducing everything about a person by looking at them.) Holmes allows Roger to help him with the bees, and, with the boy egging him on, he begins to reveal that the story he’s writing is about his last and only unsolved case. But in addition to simply telling the story, we soon

realize, Holmes is struggling against his diminishing powers to remember what happened in the case—and why it was the reason he quit the profession.

The narrative is riddled with flashbacks to the case, 30 years earlier, where a young man (Patrick Kennedy) hires Holmes to follow his pretty young wife (Hattie Morahan), who’s grieving for her two stillborn children. Holmes’ trip to Japan also threads in and out of the modern story. Another poignant thread is the uneducated Mrs. Munro’s fear of not measuring up in her son’s eyes as Roger becomes ever more attached to the brilliant old man.

There’s one small delicate moment of connection between two characters, around which, when it’s finally revealed, the entire rest of the story revolves. The problem is, it’s so subtle, the audience doesn’t quite feel it. Even given all the details of plot, counterplots, subplots, and red herrings we’ve ingested up till then, the moment seems to come completely out of nowhere. Much can be lost in translation from page to screen, as we all know, and perhaps a closer narration in the book (which I haven’t read) renders this encounter more of the emotional epiphany it needs to be.

The motives and cross-currents underlying that trip to Japan are also a bit unclear—although a visit to the ashen, bombed-out crater of Hiroshima, where Holmes witnesses the Japanese tradition of honoring one’s dead, provides an expressive coda for Condon’s film. And there’s a sly in-joke at the cinema with Holmes watching a black-and-white film about his exploits where the onscreen Holmes is played by actor Nicholas Rowe—who starred in Young Sherlock Holmes back in 1985.

This is a thoughtful, atmospheric addition to Holmesiana. Still, I hope the next time the movies want to do something really original with Sherlock Holmes, they discover the novels of Laurie King.

SOUTHPAW While Jake Gyllenhaal’s impressive physical transformation into boxer Billy Hope has been the subject of most talk show hosts’ line of questioning, the actor’s dedication to the roles that require an obsessive level of intensity is really worth the oohs and aahs (although his abs are, too). With a more dominating physical presence than ever before, Gyllenhaal plays the hopelessness of Hope with a rattling intensity that has director Antoine Fuqua’s penchant for raw thrillers written all over it, but with slightly more nuance than past works. INFINITELY POLAR BEAR Writer/ director Maya Forbes‘ directorial debut and arguably Mark Ruffalo’s most complex, beautifully layered role to date, Infinitely Polar Bear explores the inarguable difficulty of living as a manic depressive man in a time when it still wasn’t openly discussed—and making the decision to be a stay-at-home dad when it was socially unheard of. Ruffalo plays a father of two girls who agrees to stay home while Zoe Saldana pursues her dream at Columbia University in an artful look at mental disorders and the ins and outs of being a dad. INSIDE OUT In the tradition of Toy Story 2 and Up, comes Inside Out, a Pixar movie so smart, so crammed with ideas, and so full of genuine emotion, it reinvents the whole idea of what an animated movie can be. (Oh, and it’s really funny too!) Directed by Pete Docter, its premise is that each individual person is governed by a mission control center in the brain where five key emotions constantly jockey for position. A foul-up in the control booth temporarily disconnects the 11-year-old protagonist from her personality, and intrepid emotion Joy (Amy Poehler) must trek through the adolescent brain to set things right—a journey both hilarious and moving in this accomplished joyride of a movie.

JURASSIC WORLD Steven Spielberg apparently learned nothing about franchises that have worn out their welcome from the poor reaction to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Oh wait, that movie made hundreds of millions of dollars? Oh, maybe he did learn something! Anyway, in this one, there’s a new dinosaur park, and everything goes fine! Not really, but wouldn’t that be kind of awesome?

LOVE & MERCY Bill Pohlad’s generally absorbing fiction film about the amazing life and harrowing times of Brian Wilson, of the Beach Boys, narrows its focus to two pivotal moments in Wilson’s life. Paul Dano is terrific playing the younger Brian in the mid-1960s, at the height of his creative genius, and John Cusack is surprisingly

effective as the ’80s-model Brian, under the thumb of controlling psychotherapist Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). And it’s all connected by the music, a fabulous, gluttonous feast of Wilson music, from surf tunes to Smile, that informs every single scene. (PG-13) 120 minutes. (***)—Lisa Jensen.

MAGIC MIKE XXL Oh the very, very thinly veiled layer of sexual innuendo that oozes—no, explodes—from this “dance comedy.” But, hey, who can argue with abs, abs, abs? Channing Tatum (who really is a great dancer, guys) is back from stripper “retirement” to the daily grind with his best buddies, the Kings of Tampa. On their way to a stripper convention, no less, Magic Mike (Tatum) is joined by veteran dancers Big Dick Richie, Tarzan, and Ken (who didn’t get a creative stage name?) and some fresh faces as they thrust their way towards one last blowout performance. And while it’s worth noting that a movie about a tightknit group of female strippers would never be this successful at the box office, it’s a film for the giggles and the blushes and squeals of delight— like going to a male strip club, only cheaper and probably with better indoor climate control. Gregory Jacobs directs. Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, and Matt Bomer co-star. (R) 115 minutes.

MINIONS Jon Hamm said recently on The Daily Show that minions are just as appealing to adults as they are to children because “they look like capsules, they look like pills”—and he might be right, sort of. Who can possibly resist the googly-eyed, squishy yellow minions whose shape is somewhat...comforting? Finally, the makers of children’s films have figured it out—that, and the sly adult jokes that in the minion nonsensical garble, which somehow makes perfect sense and no sense at all, are completely hilarious. This time around it’s the origin story of the adorable single-celled yellow organisms, seeking their evil villain leader from the dinosaur age to the present where they find Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock) who, with her husband Herb Overkill (Jon Hamm), hatch a plan to steal Queen Elizabeth’s crown—and

then take over the world, naturally.

TED 2 The lovably foul-mouthed teddy is back—and this time, he wants to produce a spawn of his own (terrifying, we know). However, as anyone who’s survived a trip to Build-A-Bear knows, the insides of a Teddy are not conducive to reproduction, hence why Ted asks John to provide the goods.

What ensues is a typically hilarious battle for civil rights (“we’ll take it all the way up to Judge Judy if we have to”) so that Ted can prove he’s a human and keep the child he’s always wanted. Seth MacFarlane directs. Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, and Amanda Seyfried co-star. (R) 115 minutes.

TERMINATOR: GENISYS It would be hard for a Terminator film to be lamer than Terminator: Salvation, which was perhaps the first movie in history to make killer robots boring (just kidding, Chopping Mall! You blazed a trail.) The trailers for the annoyingly spelled Terminator: Genisys at least make it look like it will be weirder, although nice job spoiling the big twist, dumbasses. Anyway, Arnie is also back as the timetraveling robot assassin who used to be badass until he started saying things like “Why do you cry?” Duh, I cry because they won’t stop making Terminator movies.

TRAINWRECK Amy Schumer said on a recent episode of BBC’s Graham Norton Show that when she wrote Trainwreck she assumed they’d cast some skinny, blonde model type for the lead; thank the goddesses they did not.

Schumer brings her own completely bawdy brand of crass dudeness and uncensored shenanigans that only she could. Playing herself, she systematically takes down one gender stereotype after the next as she tries to escape a “real relationship” with Bill Hader despite their obvious chemistry. The classic roles of “player” and “sensitive-type” are reversed as Hader’s character attempts to pin Schumer down, with the help of LeBron James as what we can only assume is the best BFF ever. (R) 125 minutes. Starts Friday.

We Got the Beets

F

rom the new Kevita beet and apple cider vinegar tonic to our favorite artisanal purple kraut, we are steeped in beets this summer. Nothing was quite as ravishing as a recent salad in which I sliced roasted golden beets from Dirty Girl Produce atop arugula and small globes of buffalo mozzarella. With a drizzle of olive oil and a squeeze of Meyer lemon, the combination was both fresh and rich.

Actually it was fantastic. And easy.

Please roast beets in this fashion: cut

off the leaves (save them for a braised side dish), roll in olive oil, and wrap in foil. Bake for at least 40 minutes in a hot oven, 425 degrees or so, and check them every now and then to see if they’re done. If a knife can slide into the center easily, you’re there. Remove from oven. Wait one minute. Then, take a paper towel and gently rub off the skin. Voila! You may choose to slice and marinate the beets as they cool, something I always like to do. Then use on salads or pastas or even all by themselves next to a piece of salmon.

WATER OF LIFE 2.0 At our house we enjoy a wee drop of single malt after dinner every now and then. Mostly now. And for those occasions, we have at the ready three single-malt whiskies at all times. One is the “house” whisky, and at our house (at least this summer) it’s the absurdly satisfying Glenfiddich. Then there’s the luxury single malt, which is and always will be the incomparable Highland Park, distilled way up in the Orkney Islands and pretty much as perfect

WINES OF THE WEEK Well, according to the high rating just received by Ryan Beauregard’s Chardonnays by the folks at Wine Enthusiast, you probably should run out and try some of these supple creations. First, grab two 20’s and a 10—Beauregard wines don’t grow on trees—and then have a go at the lovely 2013 Beauregard Ranch Chardonnay, Ben Lomond Mountain.

And/or, try the 2013 Bald Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay, Ben Lomond Mountain (which took a Gold Medal at the 2015 Chronicle tasting).

Both of these stellar Chardonnays earned 93 points. Congratulations to the Beauregard wine team.

Golden beets with buffalo mozzarella, single-malt whiskies and award-winning local Chardonnays BY CHRISTINA WATERS

Finally, we like to have something a bit unruly, unusual and idiosyncratic for the odd evening. Usually, that’s Laphroaig (pronounced “la-froyg”), made on the tiny island of Islay (“eye-la”). Made at the 225-year-old distillery, this exotic creation is pungent beyond belief and exudes a seaweed tang (OK, it tastes like iodine and smoke) along with the matchless huskiness of peat fires. However, a few weeks ago, I reached for the Laphroaig on my favorite aisle at Shopper’s Corner only to find ... no Laphroaig! Not to be daunted, I scanned the shelf for something with the word “Islay” on it, and found Ardbeg, 10 years old and 46 percent alcohol.

The distillery just turned 200!

It’s always a pleasure to try new spirits, so we were game for a taste. The color was noticeably pale and golden for a whisky perfumed with so much caramel, smoke, cinnamon and seaweed. I found it less blustery than the monster Laphroaig in those characteristic peat and seaweed tones of Islay, and with a disarmingly sweet opening.

Honey, tar, smoke and a top-note of licorice fill out the middle. The finish contains a delightful burn and continues long after you’ve swallowed, but your dreams, I assure you, will be filtered through a soft veil of peat and smoke. Set aside around $50. It’ll last you a while.

alling all Merlot lovers— Hunter Hill has released its 2013 estate Merlot ($25)— and a superb one it is, too. It’s a wine that has all the delicious qualities of a well-crafted Merlot; nuanced notes of coffee, tobacco and spice, and rich fruit flavors of plum, strawberry and cherry. With a perfect amount of acidity, this merlot pairs well with a variety of foods, including roast chicken, ham, beef, and Italian cuisine—especially pasta, pizza and tomato-based dishes.

I opened up the Merlot to have with a dinner of pork loin and roast potatoes, and imbibed on a glass of it while preparing the meal.

This, for me, is the perfect time to enjoy a glass of vino—followed by another glass at dinner, of course!

A friend had given me some homegrown kale from her garden, and it was a superb match with the robust Merlot. The wine held its own with all the bold food flavors. But I’m a great believer in drinking whatever feels right at the time, and not always sticking to the “white wine with fish, red wine with meat” rule.

I have often enjoyed a glass of red with fish just because I was in a red-wine mood at the time.

Winery owners Vann and Christine Slatter say they are proud of this Merlot, which they say is “carefully crafted from grapes which ripened on the cool coast overlooking the Monterey Bay, creating an elegant wine in the true Merlot style.”

A

n eclectic market that can fill almost any need, AJ’s Market and Natural Foods rivals those fancy gas stations of Italy and France, where you can munch on a grilled panini or croque monsieur while you fuel up your car. There is often a line at the deli restaurant ordering AJ’s beloved burgers, chicken gyros and fresh-caught salmon. If it’s produce you want, Live Earth Farms offers theirs alongside organic flowers. To stock his two markets and gas stations in Soquel and Capitola, owner AJ Javed scours the Bay Area to find fun and interesting foods and specialty items.

My favorite treat is a Middle Eastern dessert called Nory Candy, which I discovered on a shelf in aisle two, above 20-pound bags of jasmine and sushi rice. Javed spoke to us about how he’s built his business.

I remember when you bought the gas station a long time ago. I can’t believe how it’s grown up!

AJ JAVED: Yes, I bought it in 1987. It was a really run-down gas station, but I knew the location was very good. I had this idea from the very start that a grocery store would do well here.

The permit, however, was not easy.

It took almost eight years to get the permit for the food. It is a labor of love.

And I’ve had help along the way. My right-hand guy, Thyer Nofti, runs the

kitchen. He brings an eclectic flavor to our restaurant. I was going to do hot dogs and he said, “No, no, no—gyros, hamburgers, salmon and salads.”

Where does the international flair and flavor come from?

I am the kind of person who encourages my employees to add their creativity. That’s why we have a lot of different flavors. We try things and see if they work; if not, we try something else. My wife and I love our neighborhood and I love my business, and so it is wonderful to find the things we sell here. But it is really involved and a lot of work to find interesting items.

I notice a lot of spices, oils, and various things from India, including the to-die-for samosas.

I am from Pakistan, so that’s where the Indian influence is coming from. We also have items from Syria and Pakistan. It is a very international store right here in the heart of Soquel. But we also focus on local businesses and products.

We have local king salmon when it is in season, a lot of local specialty beers and probably one of the best selections in town of local wines.
