The Gilroy City Council approved the 2020-2021 budget at June 3 on 5-2 vote, with council members Marie Blankley and Dion Bracco voting not to approve the budget. The new $134 million spending plan will focus on “preparing to meet tomorrow’s service demand through prioritizing customer service, economic development, public safety and infrastructure improvements in a fiscally responsible manner,” said Rachelle Bedell, community engagement officer for the city, The city expects total revenues of $144,926,190 for the fiscal year that begins July 1, and projects a drop in revenues, to $132,842,432 for the 2021 fiscal year. Because of that, the expenditures outlined in the budget will be cut by more than $10 million, ➝Budget, 11

Nearly 900 Gilroy Unified School District graduates took part in four different commencement ceremonies throughout town as members of the graduating class of 2019 earned their high school diplomas under sunshine and warm temperatures “I am very proud of the Class of 2019, and excited to see how they
build on the strong foundations formed in Gilroy’s schools,” said district board president James Pace, who sat front and center with his board colleagues as well as district and site staff during the commencement ceremonies. “These students have proven themselves to be curious, innovative, hard-working and caring. I’m sure they will represent Gilroy well in the years ahead.” Both Christopher High School, with 360 graduates, and Gilroy High School, with 327 graduates, held graduations in a garden setting within the main quads of their respective campuses.
John A. Perales Jr., who is bound for Northwestern University in Illinois, was the class of 2019 valedictorian and Gabriel Campuzano was the salutatorian for Christopher, while USC-bound Diego Hsu was the 2019 class valedictorian and Santa Clara-bound Christopher Arellano Reyes was the salutatorian for Gilroy High School. Nationally recognized Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy awarded 32 diplomas to its graduates, who spent their high school years attending classes on Gavilan College’s main campus in Gilroy.

Congressmember Jimmy Panetta on June 7 called on the federal Bureau of Land Management to halt any plans to move forward with the proposal to open hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands and mineral estate in San Benito County and other areas
along the central coast of California to new oil and gas drilling. Panetta, whose 20th District includes part of Gilroy and all of San Benito County, wrote to BLM Acting State Director Joe Stout and Central Coast Field Office (CCFO) Field Manager Ben Blom, citing concerns about the proposal’s impact on wildlife habitats and air and water quality. The Democratic congressman also stressed that the proposal stands in direct opposition to California’s efforts to develop a clean energy economy. “I request
that you do not proceed with the CCFO proposal to open new lands for oil and gas leasing and development, ensuring the central coast of California can continue aggressively pursuing policies that protect the state’s critical natural resources and support a sustainable future,” he wrote. On May 9, the BLM released a Proposed Resource Management Plan Amendment and Final Environmental Impact Statement, which would open more than 700,000 acres of public land across 11 counties in
California, including Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz counties, to oil and gas lease sales. If this plan were to go forward, it would end a five-year moratorium on oil and gas leasing of federal land and mineral estate in California, which has been in effect since 2013. The deadline to file a protest on the proposal is Sunday, June 9. Brush cleared by prescribed burn JUNE 11 FIRE TO REDUCE FIRE FUELS, IMPROVE WILDLIFE HABITAT Staff Report

The Bureau of Land Management Central Coast Field Office was set to burn roughly 30 acres of noxious grass and brush outside the entrance to the Clear Creek Management Area, approximately 60 miles south of Hollister in San Benito County, starting Tuesday, June 11. The BLM will conduct the prescribed burn—depending on weather and air quality conditions—in partnership with CAL FIRE. The burn will help reduce fuel available for wildland fire by eliminating invasive yellow star thistle, which in California can grow to shoulder height and form massive, briar patches, according to a BLM statement. The Central Coast Field Office received a grant from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to help pay for the prescribed burn as reducing noxious weeds helps rejuvenate native grasses, which may improve habitat for elk. There are three elk species in California: Rocky Mountain, Roosevelt and Tule. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation works to protect crucial elk winter and summer ranges, migration corridors, calving grounds and other areas vital to elk and other wildlife. The BLM uses an integrated weed management strategy, which includes herbicide application, sheep and goat grazing and prescribed fire to kill invasive weeds like Medusa head and yellow starthistle plants before they have a chance to set seed. Prescribed burns are used to help restore balance to the ecosystem. The exact timing of the prescribed burn will depend on temperature, wind and relative humidity, and is being conducted in close coordination with the Monterey Bay Air Resources District. Smoke may be visible to nearby rural landowners. Updated information will be provided on BLM California social media sites using #RxBurn. The Bureau of Land Management Central Coast Field Office initiated fire restrictions, effective June 10, for BLM-managed public lands in Fresno, Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties, due to wildland fire danger. The National Interagency Fire Center predicts the likelihood for large wildland fires will be above normal this summer. An unusually wet winter has produced an abundant grass crop, which has already cured or dried out. These heavy fuel loads have a high potential for creating extreme wildland fire behavior. In the last decade, nearly 90 percent of wildland fires have been caused by humans. Individuals who spark wildfires, intentionally or unintentionally,
may be held responsible for fire suppression and repair costs. The public is advised to be extremely careful when recreating outdoors, carry a shovel and water at all times, and check weather forecasts and fire danger ratings before leaving home. The following restrictions will remain in place until further notice: • No tools powered by internal combustion engines (such as chainsaws or lawn mowers) off established roads or trails. • No motorized vehicles off established roads or trails. • No target shooting, as hot bullet fragments, exploding targets and metal from recreational shooting can spark a wildfire. Use of firearms for hunting is still allowed. Hunters must abide by state of California laws and regulations. developed recreation site, or other designated areas. • No fireworks, including “safe and sane” fireworks. • No welding or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame. • No explosives. • No campfires, barbecues or open fires, except in a developed campground. Portable stoves with gas, jelled petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel are authorized with a valid California campfire permit available free at all BLM, Forest Service and CAL FIRE offices or at www.preventwildfireca. org/Permits. Sheriff's deputies and Morgan Hill Police chased down three suspects—including a juvenile—and arrested them for firearms violations after someone reported shots fired in a rural area west of Morgan Hill, according to authorities. The suspects were later identified as Fili Alfaro, 18, Daniel Villarreal, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile, police said. Deputies found a loaded handgun, assault rifle and ammunition inside the vehicle.

JUVENILE WAS EJECTED FROM VEHICLE; DRIVER ACCUSED OF HIT AND RUN Staff report
An 18-year-old Gilroy man is accused of fleeing the scene when a juvenile passenger was ejected from the suspect's vehicle and died after an alleged DUI collision in south San Jose early Thursday morning. About 3:46am June 6, San Jose police responded to a report of a traffic collision with major injuries at Monterey Road and Palm Avenue, according to San Jose Police Sgt. Enrique Garcia. The initial investigation found that a gold 1999 Toyota Camry traveling north on Monterey Road drifted into the southbound lanes and continued north near Palm Avenue, according

Isael Velarde to police. The Camry struck a center median cement guardrail, lost control and ejected the juvenile passenger from the rear seat. The car then collided into a roadside guardrail. A witness passing by stopped and contacted the occupants of the Camry to render aid, but the vehicle fled north in the southbound lanes, according to police. The witness also saw a juvenile male lying in the roadway. The juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
About the same time, California Highway Patrol officers were responding to a call reporting a wrong-way driver on Monterey Road at Palm Avenue. CHP officers located the Camry and made a traffic stop at Monterey Road and Bailey Avenue, about 1.5 miles from the original collision scene, according to San Jose police. Officers determined that alcohol and/ or drugs were a factor in the collision. The driver and passenger—both adult males— were detained, police said. The driver, Isael Velarde, 18, was arrested and booked at Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of felony hit and run, DUI causing injury, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving without a license. Velarde attended Christopher High School, according to his Facebook page.

Police continue to seek information about a hit and run collision that left an elderly male pedestrian dead on Monterey Road in San Martin. About 9:30pm June 4, officers from California Highway Patrol, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and Santa Clara County Fire responded to a hit and run collision involving a pedestrian on Monterey Road, just south of Cox Avenue, reads a
press release from CHP. Upon arrival, officers found a deceased elderly man lying on the roadway. The man had succumbed to injuries suffered during a collision with an unknown vehicle, according to police. Investigators think the driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian fled the scene in a northbound direction on Monterey Road, police said. The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office has not identified the man who died. As of June 10, the office was still seeking to notify
the victim’s next of kin, according to a coroner's staff member who answered the phone. Investigators pursued a potential lead in the case when they discovered a damaged vehicle parked in an industrial area of Gilroy June 5. However, police located and interviewed the registered owner of that car, and determined the vehicle was not involved in the June 4 collision. Fail to achieve Fellow graduates, teachers, staff, school board members and distinguished guests. Welcome to the graduation for the Class of 2019. Before I begin, I’d like to thank my mother, my father, my two sisters, my Grammy, mi abuelo y mi abuela, my aunt, my uncle and my best friends, Malcolm, Nick, Ian and Vanessa. Without them I could never be up here today. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt. Words spoken in a time of stress, emotional turmoil and uncertainty. A time many of you may be going through right now, as the future stares you directly in the face. We sit here and believe ourselves to be at a crossroads of sorts, a fork in the road with one path to our highest aspirations, and the other to a life of regret and disappointment. Failure and fear of failure are the taboo of the world, a pain and an experience all too real for all of us. Class of 2019, we’ve all failed at one point, the most successful people in business, leadership, and sports have failed thousands of times—and yet many more than them have succeeded! Still, many of us and much of our society view failure and success as complete opposite ends of the spectrum. This view of the world leads one to believe that you either win or you lose. Theoretically, this is true. For example, we tend to believe that you can’t really half-fail or half-succeed. However, today, I am here to challenge this perception—the idea that we view failure as an end point, a finality. Rather, I propose that success is an evolution of failure. Failure is nothing more than a learning moment in our path to success. Failure is the catalyst for our dreams and not the end of them. I’d bet that all of us sitting here today can point to examples where we failed: an exam, a project, at work, a relationship or perhaps a competition. At the time, this may have felt terrible, shameful and in many cases feel like the end of the world—maybe the end of your journey

t is my honor to represent this astounding, graduating class of 2019. First and foremost, I would like to especially thank the administration, the teachers and the faculty members behind the scenes here at Gilroy High. You have all provided us as students with an excellent education while fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment. None of us would have been able to get to this point without a village supporting our every decision, and for that, I would like to thank all of those who have helped us become the people we are today. None of us get to choose our family or what situation we were born into; we simply have to take what we are given and make the most of it. But it turns out that we all won the birth lottery. We have all been given the gift of education, opportunity and a chance to be the change we seek to see—and for that, we are lucky. High school has taught us many lessons, but what I have taken away most from this social experience is that it is the relationships we decide to build that teach us most about life. The most important figure in my life, the woman many know as Ms. Hsu—the Spanish teacher in colorful dresses and high heels that can be seen dancing swiftly across the classroom—that woman I know personally as my mother, the strongest woman I have ever met. I love you, Mom. Thank you for your unconditional love, your never-ending support, and for showing me that mistakes are an inevitable part of life. You have taught me that the mistakes we make are lessons we will grow from as individuals. And to all the parents out there, thank you ➝ Hsu, 12

Learn from the present While writing this speech, I realized that summing up the last four years of high school is pretty difficult to do within five minutes. As I wrote this I had no idea where to start or where I would go. I felt like it was my first day of freshman year or the beginning of my first cross country race. As freshmen we all had something in common; we were all lost on what to do and adjusting to the new environment we were in. We also had many firsts: our first football game, first float-building competition, first homecoming dance, first rally, first finals and the first of many mistakes. Sophomore year came around and it felt like a repeat of freshman year, with a better experience, because we didn’t feel lost anymore; we felt more unified and got to meet new friends that we’d overlooked before. Junior year came like a slap to the face. I can guarantee you that, due to the long nights of reading the APUSH textbook. Even though Mr. Williams’ class kept most of us up really late, we all still miss the man, the myth, the legend. Finally, at the crossroads of the end of our student career and our mature paths of further education, serving our country or pursuing a place in the workforce, we reached it: senior year, where on behalf of the senior class, I think I can say senioritis hit us pretty rough. We were all like a Michael Scott from The Office when doing homework or honestly, any work in general. Senior year was also

Kubra Sait once stated, “Asking questions is the first way to begin change.” Questions are asked on a daily basis—something that’s become essential to our lives. Questions are also a means to opening up a conversation with people you barely know, much like I’m doing now. Right? Well if questions are truly capable of this, let’s have a conversation. Let’s begin by taking a moment to understand what is in front of us this very day. Take a second to look around, take in the faces of the people we shared a fraction of our lives with, the buildings that surrounded us and the very ground we have crossed over and over again. We are only moments away from navigating through a platform while hoping we don’t trip over our gowns in the process. Before any of this happens, however, I urge every single one of you to reflect on your life at Christopher High these past years. More importantly, ask yourself how many times you woke up to get to class on time, or even to show up by the end of second period. Why? Well, every morning we are able to wake up is a complete victory in every way possible. Every morning you wake up, understand that you have the potential to shape, mold, and stretch your day into one that benefits you and, hopefully, others. The class of 2019 falls nothing short of perfect, and it consists of the most qualified people to change the lives of others they come across. I would not be able to point out the unique qualities that each and every one of you possess, mostly because it isn’t simple; it wouldn’t be anything I could sum up with a couple of words. What I can say, however, is that every student here woke up. They woke up today. We woke up

Memories make art YOUNG ARTISTS MAKE PORTRAITS FOR CHILDREN IN AFGHANISTAN
“This project is seen as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for children in Afghanistan to see themselves portrayed as works of art,” according to the district report. Forty-five students from Mt. Madonna and Christopher High Schools submitted portraits to the project. “I hope that our participation in the Memory Project serves two purposes: that my students understand that they can impact our world using their artistic talents, and that the children who receive the portraits we have drawn (are shown) that people across the world care about them and their well-being,” Hage said. “We are all a part of something bigger than we can imagine, and it is our job as global citizens to take care of each other.” Participating artists worldwide created almost 30,000 portraits in the 2018-19 school year. More than 160,000 portraits of children in 47 countries have been distributed since the beginning of the Memory Project.

Students in Haviland Hage’s art classes at Christopher High School and Mt. Madonna Continuation High School have recently completed portraits of children living in Afghanistan as part of the Memory Project, according to a recent school district announcement. The Memory Project is a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers, art students and solo artists to help cultivate global kindness by creating portraits for children around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, war, extreme poverty, neglect and loss of parents. Students create these portraits to help these children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well-being and to provide a special childhood memory in the future. Art students from Christopher and Mt. Madonna were assigned photos of children from Afghanistan.

National women’s clothing chain Dressbarn recently announced plans to close all 650 of its stores, including the location in the Gilroy Premium Outlets. Until the stores close, customers can continue to shop at Dressbarn in store and online and use Dressbarn-branded credit cards for purchases. There are no current changes to Dressbarn’s return, refund or gift card policies. In a statement, Steven Taylor, chief financial officer of Dressbarn, thanked customers for supporting the store chain in its more than 50 years of operation. “This decision was difficult, but necessary, as the Dressbarn chain has not been operating at an acceptable level of profitability in today’s retail environment,” he said. “During the wind-down process, we will continue to provide our customers with the same great experience both in store and online, offering them even better deals and value. We will work to assist our associates through the transition and maintain existing relationships with our vendors, suppliers and other key stakeholders through this process.” Plans for closing individual Dressbarn locations, including information about store closing sales, will be shared during the wind-down process, according to the retailer. A timeline has not been announced. Dressbarn has hired A&G Realty Partners to assist on real estate-related matters.
The Gilroy City Council on June 3 approved two sculptures for the Hampton Inn & Suites at 5955 Travel Park Circle that is under construction. Artist Ben Trautman will create the sculptures that will be placed along the Monterey Road frontage of the hotel. The main piece will be a 20-foot-tall blue sculpture designed after a garlic stalk. The second will be located near the entrance at Travel Park Circle, and will be a 54-inch-tall by 36-inchwide sculpture of a head of garlic.

Driver arrested in June 9 fatal accident HOLLISTER WOMAN PRONOUNCED DEAD AT HIGHWAY 25 COLLISION SCENE Staff report

A 24-year-old Hollister woman was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 25 in Hollister Sunday evening, and police arrested a man for drunk driving who was suspected of causing the accident. About 5pm June 9, a Hollister police officer arrived at the scene of a head-on collision between a black Mercedes sedan and a black Nissan sedan on Highway 25 just south of San Felipe Road, reads a June 10 press release from the California Highway Patrol. As a result of the crash, the driver of the Nissan suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The San Benito County Sheriff 's Office, acting as the coroner's office, identified the woman as Ashley Marie Santiago, 24, of Hollister. The driver of the Mercedes, Ernesto Hernandez, 28, of San Jose, suffered major injuries and was transported to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, police said. Hernandez is suspected of having been driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the collision. He was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, according to police. Anyone who has information about this collision can call the CHP at (408) 848-2324.

Deputy is recovering from rattlesnake bite INCIDENT OCCURRED DURING MARIJUANA ERADICATION EFFORT Staff report
A Santa Clara County Sheriff 's deputy is recovering after he was bitten by a rattlesnake while on a marijuana eradication assignment, according to authorities. The deputy was bitten 1pm June 6 in a rural area of San Antonio Valley Road, east of Mount Hamilton in unincorporated Morgan Hill, according to a press release from the sheriff 's office. Deputies assigned to the sheriff 's
Marijuana Eradication Team were conducting an operation in the area at the time. One of the deputies was bitten on his leg by a rattlesnake while hiking through the remote area, authorities said. A CALSTAR ambulance was dispatched due to the terrain and location of the call. After he was bitten, the deputy and his team hiked about one mile back to their vehicle before driving to the helicopter landing zone. About 1:49pm, CALSTAR arrived and airlifted the deputy via helicopter to a local hospital. The deputy is in stable condition and is being treated by medical staff.
The MET team was initially scouting the area for possible marijuana grows and found infrastructures of a recently used grow, according to the sheriff's press release. They located a large amount of trash, camping supplies, hundreds of yards of irrigation pipe and large areas of trees and brush that had been cut down and removed to make space for the garden. The press release adds, “As a safety reminder to all, rattlesnakes are known to be out more frequently during hot summer days. Be cautious and aware of where you are stepping during hikes, and wear protective clothing.”

Two new police officers and a new quick response vehicle for the fire department were included in the budget for the next two years, according to Bledell. She told the Dispatch that there were seven “strategic goals” that the council and staff considered when approving and creating the new budget: • Ensure financial stability; • Enhance public safety capabilities; • Revitalize downtown; • Focus on revenue-driven economic development; • Retain stability in the city’s workforce; • Provide opportunities for meaningful public engagement; and
• Ensure neighborhoods benefit equally from city services. In the 2020-21 fiscal year, the city projects that the biggest source of revenue for the city would be $61.4 million from charges for services, with the second largest source of revenue coming from $47.5 million in taxes. Council member Blankley told the Dispatch that she could not vote to approve the budget because in her view it did not account for increasing expenditures. She said she would have been OK with the budget if it had offered cuts or significant cuts in order to pay for all of the outlined strategic goals. Council member Bracco did not respond to the Dispatch’s request for comment on his “no” vote by the time of publication. The biggest expenditures for the coming fiscal year are expected
to be $52.5 million for personnel expenses. “The city maintains a general fund reserve level of 20 percent of annual expenditures for general operating needs and an additional 10 percent for economic uncertainties,” the budget report read. “These new levels were established by the council during the previous biennial budget process.” Bedell said compiling the budget took five months of surveying and reviewing the current budget. In a statement to the Dispatch via email, Mayor Roland Velasco said, “This particular budget reflects many of the priorities we’ve heard from the community, including public safety, fire response, economic development and fixing our infrastructure, and continues to rebuild the city with respect to restoring services levels to meet our growing service demand.”

Thanks for always sticking by my side; I appreciate you. Although I stand here on this stage as valedictorian, intelligence is much more than a perfect GPA or high SAT score or acceptance at a big name university. These factors are not indicative of intelligence. For too long society has associated these things with intelligence, and it is time for that to change. I’ve learned, through the remarkable people I’ve met, that intelligence is displayed in endless ways in which none are particularly how many words you can read per minute nor how quickly you can solve a math problem. What I’ve learned from my relationships is that everyone has a gift, and that intelligence is simply a measure of competence. It is the ability to do something successfully while having a receptiveness to learn from previous experiences so that we can continue to better ourselves in whatever discipline we practice. That is intelligence; and with that, I believe everyone in this graduating class has the capability to do something truly magnificent in this world. Finally, if there’s something to take away from this speech, it is these three pieces of advice my good friend, and the best man I know, Brandon Kappalmaa gave to me: 1. Seek Yourself. Ask yourself who am I? 2. Find companionship. Know that in love there will be no mask; and 3. Do not lose sight of your dream. Thank you and Congratulations Class of 2019, We did it! Fight on!
to success. It’s no wonder that failure can lead to fear—this fear of failure will lead us to avoid failing at all costs. The most expensive cost being our very own success! As awful as our failure experiences may have been, It is important that we walk out of these situations not thinking, “Well I’m never doing that again,” and instead ask, “What can I do better next time, or how can this event help me grow as a person?” I talk to so many people who say that their biggest fear is failing. It is counterintuitive to believe that a fear of failure will lead to an increase in success, when in reality a fear of failure leads to a lack of trying. It’s written right in our gym: Wayne Gretzky’s famous quote, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.” Everybody here has seen those words, but how often do we really apply that idea in our own lives? We need to shift our perspective toward a more positive outlook and believe that failure is simply a steppingstone to success. Class of 2019, all of you here are going on to different chapters in your lives! Don’t allow the fear of failure to keep you from your destiny! Many of you are preparing to attend incredible colleges and universities—don’t be afraid to fail.

the year of many lasts: our last first day, last football game, last time at the senior tables, last prom, last rally, and in my case, the last day of doing the morning announcements. Through the years we adjusted and became comfortable, we made our friends, joined our favorite clubs and did our favorite
sports. The thing is, to focus on these little things, to focus on embracing the race itself, the experiences gained from racing through the course. What lessons you learned from your mistakes, the memories that you made and the challenges that you faced throughout the fouryear-long race. Racing isn’t about the amount of time it takes to get from start to finish. It’s the adventure you have along the
way, the people you meet and the unique moments that you share. We yearn to shape a future for not just ourselves, but an even better future for Gilroy High School. Throughout our lives, we have been taught that success is about being at the top of your class and going to a great college, but I agree to disagree. The thing I love about Gilroy High School is that it embraces and recognizes not just people moving on to higher education but people moving on to serve our country or going into the workforce right after high school. Gilroy High School has taught me many lessons: One that really stuck to me was that success doesn’t bring happiness, happiness brings success. Though each one of us here today face different struggles, experiences, and learned many different lessons throughout the last four years, we now embark on a new journey, a new race into the real world. We can take our experiences and lessons with us to prepare us for this new adventure and help us create our own trail of success. Remember, yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift—that’s why it's called the present.

today to graduate, sure, but more importantly, to live another day. To share moments with the people we love and look up to. We woke up because we wanted to take hold of our lives and take another step toward happiness. Why do we wake up? In order to teach others what you were once taught. We wake up because we are able to, and so we take advantage of this opportunity. We do this because some people weren’t gifted the chance to wake up just one more time. So we honor them, and the people before them, by waking up. My mother once told me that my life should consist of happiness, that I was to find others who could enhance my life for the better, to fill it with the people I love. I don’t claim to be a motivational speaker, however, I can promise you that nobody, absolutely nobody can take your ability to make your life into what you want it to be. So take hold. Take hold
of everything that your heart desires. If you aim to be a top surgeon practicing the most complicated surgeries known to man, perfect. Do it. If money doesn’t interest you and you decide that giving back to the community is something more valuable, pursue that. The people sitting next to you—I urge you to look at them—have done the same you did today. Every single person here has accomplished something most of us take for granted every morning we wake up. That is to say, how many times have you opened your eyes in the morning and looked toward your phone instead of looking toward the rest of your day. The point is, today is something gifted to each and every single person here. To not make the most of what we are gifted is to lose out on a completely overlooked blessing. So really, what is a question? If a question truly serves as a catalyst prompting some sort of change in our lives, then let’s ask them. So without further ado, Class of 2019, are you ready to wake up?

It started off as one of the more uncomfortable conversations Monica Ruelas has ever had. Last November, the former Gilroy High and Hartnell College running standout received a call from Michael Freiss, the respected and venerable University of Alaska-Anchorage cross country and track and field coach who announced his retirement on June 4. When Freiss made a scholarship offer to Ruelas—who at the time was pondering another offer from another program that wanted an answer within days— she had no choice but to ask how much money Alaska was offering in the scholarship package. After all, like any recruit, Ruelas wouldn’t be doing her due diligence if she didn’t have a scholarship comparison. “I felt uncomfortable because this is not the type of conversation I’m having with people everyday or ever,” she said. “I had to kind of pressure coach and ask him up front because this other school needed an answer. I had to tell him what I needed, and he kind of had a little laugh with me, which made things easier. … I’m really excited. I never pictured Alaska as ever being an option because it’s Alaska (far away) and because they have such a good running program.” Once Ruelas heard the numbers, the next step was to take a visit to the school in January. On the visit, Ruelas felt a sense
of calm and peace in choosing Alaska as her next destination. “Coach Freiss made me comfortable enough to trust him that I could come move over there and benefit as a runner and student,” said Ruelas, who will run cross country and track for Alaska. “After that trip I was so excited to start the next new chapter in my life.” The last two years at Hartnell have proven to be one of the biggest maturation periods for Ruelas, on and off the course/ track. Ruelas’ freshman season was marred by a lack of confidence, and she came close to calling it quits on her running career during the cross country season. However, Ruelas stuck things out, and her recently completed sophomore year in cross country and track and field was a complete 180 degree turnaround. In cross country—Ruelas’ best sport—she earned All-American honors with a sixth-place finish in the California Community College State Championships. “That was my best race because never did I think I would get All-American,” she said. “That was crazy. The women’s team also placed second as a team, so in that sense we were all proud for the hard work we put in and to have that moment right there. As Coach Z (Hartnell coach Chris Zepeda) said you’ll come back here with some of your teammates in 10 years for the school’s Hall of Fame and relive that moment again.” On the track, Ruelas competed in all of the mid to long distance events, from the 800 meters to the 10,000 meters (6.2 miles). She has personal-records of 2:21.48 in the 800, 4:52.46 in the 1500, 18:03.55 in the 5,000 (3.1 miles) and 39:28.30 in the 10,000. It was her performance in the 5,000 at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic on March 30 that Ruelas was particularly proud of, as she came close to hitting her goal time of 17:59, something she once thought impossible. “That was my best race,” she

It was just Coach Z, mom and I because it was 10’o clock at night. I’m truly proud of that time, and it’s pretty crazy to think I did that because in my freshman year I was struggling just to stay in the 19 (minute range).” Ruelas’ huge improvement from her freshman year to her sophomore season resulted in three race wins during the cross country season and four firstplace finishes this past season on the track. What was once foreign territory for Ruelas—staying with the leaders and finishing up front—became a somewhat common occurrence.
When Ruelas entered Hartnell, she was raw and far from a finished product. She’ll enter Alaska as a more refined and confident runner, and yet because Alaska is a highly competitive Division II program, Ruelas will be fighting to earn the No. 5 or 6 position on the cross country team. “I will come in and play my role and learn from all the other girls because they have some really fast times,” Ruelas said. Even though Anchorage is a long way from home—Ruelas previously lived in Gilroy but resides now in Hollister—she knew going far away from home for college would serve her well. “The main reason I chose Alaska is because of something I learned throughout my two
years at Hartnell,” she said. “Without getting out of my comfort zone, I won’t be able to learn something new, and to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. I feel this next experience will help me grow as a student, person and athlete.” Ruelas was emotional when Hartnell had a ceremonial letter of intent signing two weeks ago, finalizing all of the hard work that it took to get to this point. “There were a couple of tears for sure,” she said. “I had my teammates, my coach and my family there, and it was getting ready to say goodbye. I’m kind of scared for that to be honest because I know I’m going to miss them.” Ruelas will surely be missed as well.

errill Zimmershead, age 75, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 30, 2019, in his home in Gilroy, CA.
She lived a long, beautiful life and will forever be in our hearts. “Your presence we miss, your memory we treasure. Merrill was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 1, 1943. He moved frequently throughout his childhood due to his father’s military career. He was a self-described “Navy Brat.” He attended high school in San Diego, CA and graduated in 1961. Merrill worked in various positions in the Bay Area, including the Santa Clara Fire Department. He married in 1971 and moved to Gilroy in 1976. He proudly earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree, built a thriving law office and practiced as an attorney for over 35 years in Gilroy. Merrill had a big heart and often did work pro-bono for those in need. In spite of his chosen vocation, Merrill was beloved by those who knew him both personally and professionally. He would often greet friends and clients with a wide grin and a terrible joke. In his younger years he was an avid traveler who loved to visit historical sites and vacation in tropical climates. Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Mexico were among his favorite destinations. He was also an active member of the community volunteering his time for various community projects and fundraisers. His volunteer time was varied and included, but not limited to, heading the financial branch of the Gilroy Garlic Festival. No matter the circumstance in which he found himself, Merrill was an eternal optimist, choosing to see the bright side in life. He has joined his father, Clarence “Red” Eugene Zimmershead and his mother, Hazel Josephine Zimmershead. Merrill is survived by his sisters Margaret Harmon and Hazel Zepeda and his children: Denise Gluhan, Michael Zimmershead, Matthew Zimmershead, Melody Gebhardt, Maxwell Zimmershead, and Megan Valenzuela, as well as 14 of his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne L. Conrotto, and their son, Duane L. Conrotto. He leaves his second wife, Katherine Conrotto, his granddaughters, Tjiska Elaine and Kimberly Clare, and his daughter-in-law Karen Conrotto. Conrotto earned a degree in anthropology from Stanford University after which he began a 17-year journalism career. He was editor of Desert Magazine (where he received a California State Fair Gold Medal in Journalism) and the Palm Desert Post. He was a former president of the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce. After moving to Sonora in 1967, he earned a Master’s Degree in English at Stanislaus State University. He taught at Oakdale High School from 1972 to 1992. He was chairman of the English Department there, and introduced Advanced Placement and GATE to the school. He is the author of numerous magazine articles and books, including, Miwok Means People.
