City seeks Garlic giant responds to documentary applicants to fill seat on council NETFLIX SHOW SUGGESTS COMPLICITY WITH CHEAP CHINESE IMPORTS

PAUL KLOECKER SEAT WILL BE FILLED WITH APPOINTEE

Gilroy’s Christopher Ranch, America’s biggest garlic producer,

disputes accusations that it conspired to fix garlic prices and sells garlic peeled by Chinese prisoners, allegations raised by competitors in a new Netflix documentary series investigating food scandals called “Rotten.” The episode, called “Garlic Breath,” shows what it alleges is undercover video taken in Chinese prisons of workers peeling garlic—using their teeth

in some cases, according to an undercover witness, to remove roots because the peeling had ruined the prisoners’ fingernails. The hidden camera video shows boxes marked with the Golden Lion brand, sold by Christopher. Ken Christopher, the thirdgeneration manager of the family-owned private company, this week denied the the documentary’s allegations. He said that

Christopher, Gilroy’s biggest employer, is planning to file suit against Netflix asking it to stop showing the documentary and to issue a correction. He said the company is overwhelmed by negative comments on social media as a result of the show. Christopher said his company has never sold garlic peeled ➝ Christopher, 2

The Gilroy City Council voted unanimously to appoint a new council person to replace Paul Kloecker, who died last month. People who want the seat have until Jan. 18 to submit applications. The Gilroy City Charter gave the council three options. Either, make an appointment that evening, accept applications until the Jan. 18 deadline, then interview and appoint a candidate by Feb. 5, or, call for a new general election. An election would have cost the city up to $350,000, prompting the council to take the more frugal option. The steep price tag of the special election is due primarily because the cost for the standalone election is not consolidated with other jurisdictions, meaning the city would need to pay the entirety of the bill. For the general election in 2016, the cost for the city council race including all candidates cost $43,677. One known contender for the spot is Tom Fischer, a longtime commissioner on the Planning Commission, who just barely missed winning the seat Kloecker won in 2016. Kloecker garnered 5,471 votes, 95 more than Fischer, who got 5,376 votes. Three speakers took their opportunity to speak

Gilroyan to tattoo on Ink THE 24-YEAR-OLD ARTIST IS LOOKING TO WIN $100K ON NATIONAL TV By Brad Kava Editor

A Gilroy tattoo artist will be featured in a 16-week competitive tattooing TV show called “Ink Master,” which airs at 10pm Tuesdays on the Spike network. If he wins, he would receive $100,000.

Daniel Silva, 24, who works at Rock Zone, at 1323 First St., is the youngest competitor on the show in its 10th season. Last year he beat the Season 8 winner in a San Francisco televised face off in front of a live audience after which he got 500 requests for tattoos. His life is a real come-frombehind story. At 20, the Gilroy High School graduate served a year in jail for dealing cocaine and marijuana. He got out and

lived on friends’ couches and garages for a year, while he saved up money for a $300 tattoo machine and worked in retail. He got a station at Rock Zone when it was the only place that would give him a spot because he was so inexperienced and hadn’t served an apprenticeship. His first month he had three customers. He had four the next. But after spreading his art on social media his clientele grew geometrically. He’s now booked a

year in advance. The popular TV show found him as a result of his strong presence on social media. The fact that he’s so young and facing much more experienced competitors made him a real darling on the show. “The trade is super hard to get into,” said Silva. “You can’t learn it in school. It’s one of those trades where you have to know someone to learn it. For me it ➝ Tattoo, 14
