Several thousand Gilroyans lined the streets Sunday to cheer on the Gilroy and Christopher High football teams which won their respective California Interscholastic Federation section championships, the first time both won

simultaneously. Gilroy won a championship in 1926.

The parade, which started near the Gilroy Medical Center on West Sixth Street, wound its way west, then south on Miller Avenue on its way to Christmas Hill Park.

Sounds simple? Well, it’s not, but Christopher High Football mom Deanna Franklin along with a team of supporters, Mayor Roland Velasco and the two schools got together quickly to get the job done. It was nothing short of a touchdown.

Gilroy City Councilman Paul Kloecker died from lung disease Friday morning bringing to a close a lifetime of service to his country, community and love for family and friends.

Kloecker, 82, won his first of three terms on the Gilroy City Council in 6

1981 when he earned a reputation for steadfastness and earnest preparation. While Kloecker was tenacious, he always strived not to let politics destroy relationships.

"We would argue about politics and I even remember him hanging up on me once," said longtime friend Ron Kirkish. "He called me up the next day and asked, 'Are you still mad at me?' He would never let something like that destroy our friendship, but he would still let you know he disagreed with you."

Kloecker's career in construction management proved invaluable to the city, where he used his expertise to manage the city's infrastructure. He served 12 years on the Santa Clara County Transportation Commission, two years as vice chair, 12 years as a board member of the Association of Bay Area Governments serving two years as vice president. tried to force it to build a sidewalk all the way to 10th Street. Daniel Harney voted no twice and Mayor Roland Velasco voted against it once.

The application for Gateway Apartments, a 75-unit, four-story complex proposed for a 1.86-acre site on vacant land was initially denied by the Planning Commission on February 18. The applicant appealed the decision to the council, which discussed the project at sessions on March 21 and April 4. The applicant, AMG & Associates, had threatened to sue the city and each council member if the appeal is denied by the council, so the issue was also discussed during closed session. The project has since been sold to Danco Communities, of Arcata.

The presiding voters argued that the city needs affordable housing for seniors, despite the hazards of this one. The complex would have 67 low income units for single people earning under $59,000 and eight units for those with a very low income under $39,000.

spaces for each apartment, while the public anticipates at least two cars per unit.

“Even the developer admitted there won’t be enough parking,” Velasco said.

The council had asked AMG to build a sidewalk from the project to 10th Street, which the developer said would cost $1 million, according to Harney, but the company declined.

The new company is putting a raised sidewalk and gutter in front of its building, but it ends there.

It has contributed $73,000 in fees for a future sidewalk to continue to 10th.

Velasco said he expected sidewalks to services to be built as more housing is added to Monterey Road, but for now, the city was suffering from a “leapfrog approach” to construction, rather than a more considered plan for the whole area.

Vice Mayor Dion Bracco had a business near the site, but has since bought a large property near Home Depot for his towing business. He feared the city wouldn’t see a sidewalk along that part of Monterey Road “in our lifetimes.”

project to downtown or to grocery stores or doctors offices,” said Harney.

Velasco compared it to the 262-unit Alexander Station project around the corner, which was approved but drew thousands of complaints from residents afterwards from people who said they were blindsided by what has become the city’s tallest and most dense housing project with too few parking spaces.

“I didn’t like the location away from transit, away from the services people will need,” said Velasco of the newest project. “I also didn’t like backing it up against the rail line. The point I was making is that somehow because someone says it’s affordable or senior housing, you shouldn’t have to approve it. Alexander Station is a perfect example of not enough thought going into a project. They hide behind the idea that we need the housing.”

One of the biggest complaints with the approval Alexander Station is that it won’t have enough parking for residents and they will spill out onto already crowded streets.

On Wednesday November 24 at approximately 4:30 pm on the 7500 block of Alexander Street, Jason Contreras, 32, was gunned down on the sidewalk; the apparent result of an argument that made Contreras the city's first homicide victim of the year.

Police have identified Jay Robert Vasquez, 20, as a suspect in the murder and have issued a Ramey warrant for his arrest.

Vasquez is considered armed and dangerous.

A Ramey warrant is used by law enforcement to arrest a suspect without charges being filed. Police often use Ramey warrants to get information from a suspect while they are in police custody. Officers can bypass the prosecutor's office and get a Ramey warrant from a judge based on their current evidence.

Vasquez faces three charges at this time:

murder, crime committed for the benefit of a street gang and of being an active gang member.

A nearby neighbor heard what he thought was were loud banging noises on his door, expecting a roofer to come by that day. Shortly after the blasts outside, his wife correctly identified the bangs as gunshots.

“He was laying on his side and his friend was yelling to him, ‘Wake up Jason!,’” a witness who lives nearby said.

According to witnesses, Contreras was in a parked car with three to four people shortly before the shooting. Contreras reportedly exited the vehicle when a confrontation with the unidentified person occurred.

There were two shots, one to the chest and another to the abdomen, according to the witness, paramedics rushed to save Contreras's life, but the Gilroyan was seen dead half an hour after the shooting.

“His friend was yelling at a woman in the car, telling her to call an ambulance,” he said. “He pulled off the guy’s shirt and was using it to stop up the wounds. I went

out to see if I could help, but I didn’t want to get in the way. It looked like he was already dead.”

The 7500 block of Alexander Street between Martin and Lewis Streets has changed a lot over the years a longtime resident described; a neighborhood that went from being quiet and full of homeowners to one of drug traffic, gunshots and police raids.

As of Monday, a monument has grown on the sidewalk of the murder.

A whiteboard full of messages of love along with 49ers gear, votive candles, crosses and cans of Modelo with a nearly empty bottle of Hennessy, remain.

Family and friends continue to mourn there.

“He was a great guy, like a brother; almost like a father to me,” said a family member who asked not to be identified. “He was very loved.”

In 2013 Contreras was charged with two felonies for car theft and possession of methamphetamine as well as two misdemeanors, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. Contreras pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 270 days in County Jail and ordered to pay $1,323 in fines.

The Gilroy Bicycle Pedestrian Committee wants to expand available bike parking downtown from 60 to 380 bike parking spots and is waiting for permission from the city council to start work on the plan.

A $3,000 donation made by the Sunrise Rotary Club to the Bicycle Pedestrian Committee for the installation of bike racks was recently rescinded due to ongoing trouble navigating through city red tape.

Community Development Director Kristi Abrams came to the rescue.

“I kept on getting emails from Kristi Abrams and she said, ‘No problem.,’” Bicycle Commision Chairperson Zach Hilton said. “She told me that they could

It's been a bit of a bumpy ride for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission as the group works to increase bike riding in Downtown Gilroy.

Aside from the bureaucratic soup that frustrated Sunrise's donation, the commission has had time to present its work to the city council but is still waiting for an official motion to proceed.

They will start, however, with four $743 new bike racks; green and designed in the form of a bike, 67” long and 41” high made of galvanized steel with a 26” “Downtown Gilroy” sign printed where the front wheel would be.

The remaining two will be installed in front of Pinnacle Bank and the CMAP building.

“We want to create a gateway effect,” Hilton said. “Most of the downtown’s activity happens between Sixth and Fourth Streets. The racks will also serve as public art pieces.”

The city will install two of the racks at the corner of Sixth and Monterey streets; one in front Old City Hall and another in front of the Halls Building.

Sunrise’s donation is not wasted, however.

The club has decided to donate the funds to Gavilan College to be used for bike racks and potentially a bike FixBikit station.

On Wednesday Pinnacle Bank announced that they would purchase an additional bike rack.

One of the City’s Strategic Plan goals is to develop a vibrant downtown. In keeping with Council’s desire to assist downtown, funding has been appropriated to aid in that effort.

I voted against this tax bill because it would have a negative impact on too many families on the central coast of California and our nation. The bill lowers taxes for the wealthy, while raising taxes on many working and middle-class families. The bill would leave millions without health insurance or with increased premiums. It sets the stage for massive cuts to critical services and entitlements to my constituents and support for our communities. It will add $1.5 trillion to the national debt.

Most disconcerting, the bill caps the state and local tax deduction at $10,000, far below the average $23,000 deduction claimed by over 177,000 households in California’s 20th Congressional District each year. The plan also reduces the limit on the mortgage interest deduction, which will have a detrimentall impact on high-cost housing markets in our district.

I believe that we need bipartisan tax reform crafted through an evidenced-based process, with deliberative hearings and input from a wide range of experts.

Instead, we were presented today with a partisan bill that was rushed through Congress without sufficient vetting. As a result, we were left with a bill that will not meet the needs of Central Coast middle-class and low-income families, and will only exacerbate the challenges that they and our nation currently face.

New Hope sees future in new digs ON SUNDAY THE CHURCH CELEBRATED ITS PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

On Muraoka Drive, in a newly remodeled building on the north end of town, surrounded by warehouses and industrial buildings there was a party going on. There was a rock band, food, drinks, laughing and singing.

It wasn't a nightclub or a house party; it was a church ceremony.

After four years of construction New Hope Community Church was celebrating a new beginning. The building itself, large enough to double as an airplane hanger, can host over 1,000 worshipers. There are an information desk and i-Pads at the doors designed to help guide the parishioners and televisions on the wall, broadcasting the band's performance with accompanying lyrics on one of the monitors.

It took a lot of faith to finish the project and a lot of hope. Having hope is something that lead pastor Malcolm MacPhail is an expert at and he needed every ounce of hope he could muster when he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 1994.

“There wasn’t a donor so they weren’t going to operate,” MacPhail said. “Hope was all I had and at the time, it felt like there was none left.”

MacPhail survived and with

an new abundance of hope, he embarked to grow his congregation.

New Hope Community Church is an Assembly of God Church, a Christian denomination founded in 1913. The atmosphere within the church, from the lively music and the technology is unlike that of most other churches.

"It's based on salvation in Christ, the expression of spiritual gifts and it's a belief that we are to go all over the world with missionaries," MacPhail said. "We spend over $100,000 a year to support missionaries going into third world programs running feeding programs and building bible colleges. I just got a letter from a missionary in the Democratic Republic of the Congo who built a bible college in the jungle."

It took New Hope four years to raise the $800,000 it needed to complete the church on Muraoka Drive. Even during the construction process, despite the sawdust, church services continued on Sundays.

"Everybody bared with the process and it was great to see everybody do church as a team," Pastor Chris Soto said.

"Everybody pitched in. We're in a great place financially and we're happy to celebrate that with such a big project."

With the completion of the church, New Hope Community Church will work to continue its mission to bring together the various churches in Gilroy to make a greater contribution to the community.

BUILDING BLOCKS Lead Pastor Malcolm MacPhail uses lessons from the past to help guide his New Hope Community Church into the future.

"There's been an increase in relationships between other denominations and other pastors in the last 10 years and there's a greater awareness now that churches are a vital part of the community," MacPhail said. "We work very closely with the public schools, Rebekah Children's Services and St Joseph's. We also partner with an organization in San Francisco's Tenderloin District. Churches now see the importance of going beyond our walls and do acts of kindness more than ever before."

The work to complete New Hope was another collaborative effort from various

contractors in Gilroy including Kent Construction and R W Gish Construction along with contractors Tom Cline, Steve Jeske, Dan Crumrine and lobby design by Rachelle Castaneda and Nicole DelMoral.

"This is a great day for us," MacPhail said. "We doubled our capacity so we can invite more people to experience Jesus Christ."

Aside from Sunday services, New Hope hosts Rise Youth Movement for jr. high and high school students on Tuesday nights, New Hope Women, The L.O.F.T., designed for young adults aged 18-35

and Adventure Awaits for children on Wednesday nights. The church also hosts various recovery groups on Fridays.

"We do something about every night so we can get the full use out of this building," Soto said.

The church is not 100 percent complete quite yet; they still need to finish their cross.

"We have one, but it's just not here yet," McPhail said. "We just need to refurbish the one we have. It's a huge one. It was actually used to in a play to hang a real person on. It's even got blood stains on it. It's pretty cool. That's the only thing we're missing."

County to expand shelter services As winter sets in and temperatures drop, Santa Clara County officials are actively working with all jurisdictions and providers to ramp up warming centers and associated services for homeless individuals and families, according to county staff.

“Warming centers and shelters can help save the lives of our most vulnerable children, seniors, veterans and individuals,” said District 1 Supervisor Mike Wasserman, who is South County’s representative.

“A simple cold or flu can turn deadly for someone living outdoors when temperatures drop.”

During extreme cold temperatures that warrant a declaration of inclement weather, the county’s

Office of Supportive Housing implements the Inclement Weather Plan, which supplements the regular, ongoing cold weather shelter program.

Overnight temperatures are expected to continue to dip into the mid-30 degrees, according to the local forecast.

There were an estimated 7,394 homeless individuals within the county and 388 in Morgan Hill, according to the 2017 Santa Clara County Homeless Census and Survey Report.

“We expand outreach and services for the homeless to reduce instances of hypothermia and frostbite caused by extreme weather including the cold, wind

and rain,” said Michelle Covert, housing and homeless concerns coordinator for OSH. “Many of the homeless reside in encampments in creek areas and are at increased risk due to health conditions.”

Components of the Inclement Weather Plan include expanded shelter services, outreach to encampments by the county’s Valley Homeless Healthcare Program, warming centers and the monitoring of homeless persons treated for cold weather injuries at local hospitals.

• Type HOMELESS in the message • Send the message During declared Inclement Weather Episodes, up to 192 additional beds will be available at the following locations: Bill Wilson Center (691 S 2nd St., San Jose), City Team Ministries (1174 Old Bayshore Hwy, San Jose), HomeFirst’s Boccardo Reception Center (2011 Little Orchard Street San Jose), the Gilroy Armory (8490 Wren Avenue, Gilroy), LifeMoves Georgia Travis House (260 Commercial Street), Montgomery Street Inn (358 N Montgomery St, San Jose), Project WeHOPE (1854 Bay Rd, East Palo Alto) and the Salvation Army (405 North 4th Street, San Jose).

Valley Transportation Authority’s 68 bus provides public transportation has pickups as far south as Gilroy through Morgan Hill, and goes north to downtown San Jose to the Diridon Transit Center.

The Office of Supportive Housing recommends that those wanting to assist the homeless during winter months donate new or slightly used cold weather gear such as hats, socks, gloves, sleeping bags, shoes, coats and blankets. Items can be dropped off at HomeFirst, 2011 Little Orchard Street (main entrance is on Cimino Street) or Sacred Heart Community Services (visit sacredheartcs.org for hours and location).

ernida Jones, of Morgan Hill, California, died peacefully on December 18, 2017. She lived in Morgan Hill for the past 46 years.

Vernida continued her career as a hairdresser for several years before she retired.

She leaves behind one sibling, Mary Philips and two children Loretta Volpi (Rocci) and Allen Jones (Isabel).

She was a loving grandmother to five grandchildren; Deborah Hernandez, Ruth Lane, Dina Bengivengo, Rachel Jones, and Robert Jones; ten great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed and loved forever.

urrounded by loving family members, Agapita Babiera Zaballero passed away at 92 years in Morgan Hill on December 7, 2017. Pinang, as she was known, was born in Manila, Philippines on December 5, 1925 and was preceded in death by her husband Francisco Zaballero.

Kloecker leaves behind his wife Pat, a retired 7th Grade teacher at Solorsano Middle School, Joseph, a current teacher at Solorsano and Valerie who married Adam Weingarten of El Cerrito California and a granddaughter Gia Rose Weingarten.

The city council will have two options to fill his vacant position according to city staff.

On its first meeting of the year Jan. 8, the city council may direct staff to advertise for applications to fill the vacancy. They

can then interview prospective applicants and appoint someone to fill the position within thirty days after the declaration of the vacancy until a successor is elected in the next general election.

Kloecker loved music, playing the piano and saxophone and was involved in the South Valley Orchestra. He also tried his hand at acting, playing President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a stage performance of Annie, where his daughter Valerie played an orphan and son Joseph worked building sets.

Kloecker had a well-earned reputation for standing up for what he thought was right, exemplified by his belief of introducing altar girls at St Mary's Catholic Church.

"He was always forward thinking," Pat said. "When we first came to Gilroy he wanted Valerie to be an altar girl at St Mary's. He had seen examples in his travels in the Navy and with his Jesuit training, he thought it was a great idea. The parish said ‘No way,’ but he kept working and working on it. He was relentless. Eventually, they relented."

Kloecker's faith extended beyond the church and into the community. He believed in people and did everything he could to bring out the best in those around him.

"He always saw the potential in people before they saw it in themselves," remembered Joseph. "He would always guide people. When they said 'I can't,' he said 'They could.'"

Kloecker is fondly remembered by his colleagues on the city council and the city's police and fire departments paid their respects, escorting his body from St Louise Medical Center to Habing Family Funeral Home.

Kloecker loved Gilroy Gardens and served as a docent and an engineer for the train at the park. He also cherished his volunteer work as a marshall for eight years at Pebble Beach for the AT&T Pro-Am Tournament,

Detroit where he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering before embarking on a 22-year career in the Navy where he earned an MS in Financial Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey.

Given a choice between attending MIT or the Naval Postgraduate school, he picked the latter, in part, to fulfill a lifelong desire to live in California.

The decision was a fortuitous one. He met the love of his life, Pat, a Gilroy native, who was then a school teacher in Monterey and the couple was married on Aug.10, 1974 at the Carmel Mission.

Kloecker's served as an engineer construction manager with the Seabees, the famed United States Naval Construction Battalions, where he helped build runways and housing while stationed in Vietnam. For his service, Lieutenant Commander Kloecker was awarded a Bronze Star for his service and always remained committed to caring for returning veterans.

When Kloecker's military career ended in 1980, the Kloeckers decided to move to Gilroy, where he embarked on a career as a construction project manager and a facility manager as a building boom erupted in Silicon Valley. It was then when Kloecker embarked on a career in public service to the city of Gilroy.

Kloecker showed his love for community service, volunteering with the Gilroy Garlic Festival where he served as the construction chairman during the festival's infancy. His commitment to go above a beyond is remembered fondly.

"One night he and his crew were out on Santa Teresa Avenue, painting divider lines by flashlight on the road," Pat recalled. "He often came home at 2am and was back at it by

➝ Paul Kloecker, 1 Kloecker was a living example never to give up. After his third term ended in 1995, Kloecker worked hard to reclaim a spot on the city council, eventually winning back a seat in 2016.

"He was tenacious," said City Council Member Dan Harney.

"Despite his illness, he fought very hard to attend every city council meeting and closed session meeting. He was an exceptional resource to the city, with his expertise and deep understanding of the issues. He would come early, immersing himself completely in all the agenda items.

"He told me politics is a lot like baseball–if you go up to bat enough times the law of averages says you'll eventually get elected.

At the time I didn't realize he was talking about himself."

Kloecker served as a role model for future leaders of Gilroy, including Mayor Roland Velasco.

"I first met Paul in the eighties when I was following the city council," Velasco said. "He took stands on controversial issues and while he would tell someone he thought they were wrong, he was always positive and respectful. Recently he was talking as much, but when he did–everyone sat up and listened."

Kloecker, was born on April 21, 1935, in Erie, Pennsylvania to August Roman and Kathryn Vaehnle Kloecker. He was the second youngest child in the German-American family with sisters, Claire, Kathleen and brothers John Edward and Roman Kloecker who survives as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Kloecker graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie, a Jesuit High School where he played saxophone with his band, the Tune-Toppers.

The children who live on the campus of Rebekah’s onsite school were excited to see all the motorcycles and toys, she added.

Rebekah’s and House of Thunder have teamed for the annual toy run for more than a decade. Sandoval said by now, the toy run typically provides holiday gifts to more than 1,000 children whose families are served by Rebekah’s Children’s Services.

“It reaches multiple communities,” Sandoval said.

Rebekah’s is not the only recipient of House of Thunder’s and the biker community’s generosity. Toys collected during the Dec. 2 Red and White toy drive also went to Cathedral of Faith and St. Justin of Santa Clara, Milburn said.

The South Bay motorcycle community came together in Morgan Hill this month to help make the holidays merry and bright for local children who are less fortunate.

The House of Thunder Harley Davidson annual Toy Run started in the dealership’s parking lot on Condit Road the morning of Dec. 9. More than 50 bikers loaded up new stuffed animals, dolls, kids’ bicycles and other new presents onto their motorcycles and a trailer, and rode together to donate the gifts to Rebekah’s Children’s Services in Gilroy.

More than 2,000 new toys were donated to House of Thunder in the weeks preceding the Dec. 9 toy run—mostly

from the annual Hells Angels “Red and White Toy Drive” which took place at the dealership the previous week, according to House of Thunder Marketing Manager Joel Milburn. More than 20 motorcycle clubs and 400 bikers from throughout the Bay Area participated in the Dec. 2 event.

Also on Dec. 9, the dealership donated the proceeds from a bike raffle—more than $5,000—to Rebekah’s Children’s Services, which offers a variety of health, education and other services to children and foster families in South County, Salinas and Campbell.

House of Thunder also invited patrons to donate toys at the dealership’s showroom.

“Customers just kept coming in, and coming in with more toys,” Milburn said.

It was a special sight when the bikers roared into Rebekah’s Children’s Services parking lot Dec. 9, loaded up with toys.

The new western store, Ariat, was selling its most expensive products at extreme deals. English riding boots that usually sell for $1,000 are selling for $400. American boots originally listed at $400 were selling for as low as $50 with a combination of outlet and holiday markdowns.

On Monday, a week before Christmas, the line to pay at Francesca’s Collections boutique store stretched across the store. The Jockey outlet had mostly sold out of seasonal clothing and managers were offering customers a chance to buy presents online at the store and have the items shipped for only $3. Jockey’s manager, Dave Cartee, was giving customers the kind of personal service they can’t get online. For men who may not know much about women’s underwear, he was helping out by looking up in his computer records what the women had bought in the store before.

Other stores were doing what they can to get shoppers in and away from online shopping. Lucky Brand has jeans $20 cheaper than online prices.

Other stores are trading coupons. If you go into one store, you get a coupon for additional savings at another Outlet outpost.

Parking lots were packed the weekend before Christmas and while some stores estimated that sales were up, a manager at Lucky said sales were down for the year as much as 7 percent and 10 percent at the holidays.

“We are down in traffic,” said Cindy Alvarez. “I feel like people are buying more online.” Jeans in the store are $79, but $99 online.

showed up to celebrate our champions,” Councilmember Dan Harney said. “Besides the players being celebrated, it was great how from both high schools’ marching bands, cheerleaders and color guards marched together.”

Gilroy High players were ready to flaunt an undefeated season, which included a 24-6 victory over Christopher in October. As players from both sides mingled at Christmas Hill Park after the parade, several were shouting for a no-pads rugby match. The desire to keep balling was alive and kicking.

“Oh yeah, we’d totally play them, right now,” said Gilroy High senior Tony Andrade.

Gilroy’s historic football achievement has not gone unnoticed in Silicon Valley.

“I was at a recent Silicon Valley Clean Energy Board of Directors meeting and all the other cities were talking about how our kids set a new record with two division champions in a school district,” Harney said.

According to reports, Thompson, who was reported as a transient, was trespassing on the Union Pacific railroad two miles north of the

Gilroy Transit Station when he was killed.

The VTA transferred the passengers on train 156 and passengers from other trains San Martin Station to Gilroy Transit Station by bus at 6:41 pm.

The fatality was Caltrain's ninth in 2017.

Gomez is ready to compete for state emanuel lee Sports Editor

When Anthony Gomez was in the middle of a losing streak during an otherwise solid freshman season, his coaches kept on encouraging him.

“They said, ‘Wait, it’ll be your time.’ That is what pushed me through my freshman year,” Gomez said. “They said to be patient because my time will come.”

Indeed, it’s Gomez’s time. The Christopher High junior entered the week ranked No. 2 in the heavyweight division of the Central Coast Section rankings.

For high school athletes, the recruiting process can be long, arduous and at times excruciating. For Kalena Paredes, the path to play softball at New York University (NYU) barely hit a speed bump.

The Christopher High senior utility player signed her official letter of intent Wednesday on campus in front of family, friends, coaches and teammates.

“I’m sure I’m going to get emotional,” Paredes said in a phone interview with the Dispatch Monday. “When I was inviting all my friends, family and coaches, just remembering the people

who helped me get to this point, it got emotional.”

The 5-foot-3 Paredes won over the NYU coaches with her enthusiasm, talent and work ethic. Paredes has played multiple positions for Christopher High and her club team, the San Jose Lady Sharks. In high school, Paredes has done an excellent job of playing left field, which presents plenty of challenges due to the weather conditions and positioning of the field at Christopher High.

“She pretty much had left field locked up for the last couple of years,” Cougars coach Julian Santiago said in an email

to the Dispatch. “She did a very good job in left at Christopher, which is not an easy thing to do, with the wind and size of the field. She was also one of the centerpieces of the lineup. She could hit for average and power. One of the most memorable shots was in Watsonville last year. One of the longest (home runs) I’ve ever seen (her hit).”

Paredes said one of her proudest moments at Christopher High came in a 4-3, 8-inning loss to Pioneer High in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Central Coast Section Division II playoffs.

now playing at UCLA— Paredes laid down a suicide squeeze that brought in a run to force the game into extra innings.

“No one thought we would be as close as we were,” Paredes said. “And we almost won the game.”

Even though Paredes has a smoothness to her game, it wasn’t always this way.

In fact, Paredes laughed at herself as she recalled her first couple of years once she took up the sport at age 7.

“Let’s just say I wasn’t the most coordinated in the early years,” she said. “I was still competitive, enthusiastic and I loved being out there, but I wasn’t the best player.

But from a young age, I

learned how to deal with failure. I knew I had to keep moving forward and working hard.”

Paredes credits her parents, Paulo and Denise, and her uncle, Rico, for introducing her to the game and being supportive in the process.

“I think my uncle bought me my first glove,” she said.

Paredes has used that nurturing environment to grow into a player who works diligently on and off the field. Paredes carries a weighted 4.12 GPA, which is in the top 10 percent of all students in the class of 2018 at Christopher.

If Gomez stays healthy and continues to work hard, he’ll likely meet his nemesis, Jose Quintero of Alisal, in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division Championships and CCS Championships.

Even though Gomez has a less than stellar track record against Quintero—he’s 0-4 against the Alisal junior since the start of last season—Gomez has to like his chances for a breakthrough the next time the two wrestlers meet.

That’s because Gomez was on equal terms with Quintero in their latest meeting three weeks ago.

Gomez lost the match, 2-1, when he rode into a Quintero shot with 2 seconds remaining. It was an agonizing defeat, and yet it also gave Gomez confidence that things will be different the next time they square off.

“I’m going to get him the next time for sure,” he said.

Gomez credits the four losses to Quintero as a huge motivating factor to improve. In their first match last year, Quintero easily handled Gomez, 7-0. ➝ Gomez, page 20

Orchard Valley has spectacular year

The Orchard Valley Toros U15 FC girls soccer team ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 5 nationally in their division this past season, finishing 18-1-4. The Toros won their final two matches in the NorCal NPL Showcase in Davis, while also taking home the National Premier League 1 West championship.

OV will play in the prestigious NPL Champions League in the spring. Christopher High’s Gomez ready for state return at the 2:58 mark of the first period, it couldn’t put too much of a damper on Gomez’s CCS breakthrough.

Gomez had already punched his ticket to state after recording a 5-3 win over Los Gatos’ Michael Wiley in the semifinals. Gomez recorded a two-point takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining, and he was left in tears in the aftermath of the victory.

“Making it to state was the whole goal of the season,” he said. “At the moment, I was stunned. I kind of thought, ‘Wait, did I just do this? Wow, I’m going to state.’”

Gomez remembers having a great conversation with Cougars coach Jose Lara, who served as the assistant coach last year.

“He said, ‘Why didn’t you come up and hug me afterward?’” Gomez said.

“I told him I didn’t know, that I was so stunned and basically in tears.”

Lara was effusive in his praise for Gomez, whom he has helped develop into one of the section’s elite heavyweights.

“Jose is very energetic, very outgoing and has a high standard in terms of what he wants to accomplish this year,” Lara said.

“He’s a solid wrestler and very coachable. He’s hungry for that CCS title and even more hungry to place at state. And he’s perfectly capable of doing that if he follows our plan.”

Lara said the plan is for Gomez to shoot, wrestle tough and wrestle smart.

“And so far Anthony has been applying those really well,” Lara said.

As of last week Gomez weighed 230 pounds. That means he’s giving up to 55 pounds in a given match, and Gomez said to counter that he’s planning on adding several pounds of muscle as the season goes along. It must be good to be a heavyweight. While the majority of wrestlers have to cut to make weight, Gomez has the luxury of not having to diet.

Gomez went 2-2 last weekend in the Tournament of Champions in Reno, a solid result considering the top-flight competition in the event.

Off the mat, Gomez works two jobs: one at Crocs in the outlet mall and the other helping his grandma with her cleaning business.

“Anthony juggles school, sports, work, and he does them in remarkable fashion,” Lara said. “He doesn’t let anything get him down, and he’s willing to accept any challenges.”

Indeed, Gomez said the greatest challenge of his life came when his parents divorced three or four years ago. Gomez used wrestling as his oasis, a place where he could go to get away from the emotionally turbulent time he was enduring.

“My parents getting separated really pushed me to learn how to depend on myself and take care of others,” Gomez said. “It kind of pushed me to train even harder for wrestling and kind of take my mind off things.”

Last year’s state experience has driven Gomez to be his very best. He entered Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield like many first-timers to the state experience: wide-eyed, nervous and just happy

“Every time I’ve lost to him, especially after the first time, I knew I needed to get my stuff together,” Gomez said. “The second time I lost to him, I was really upset and knew I had to train even harder.

I had to keep pushing myself.”

Whenever Gomez goes up against a strong opponent, the matches tend to be low scoring. It’s the ultimate battle of attrition, and yet that suits Gomez just fine. Gomez has a similar game plan for every match: wear the opponent down before going in for the kill shot.

“You have to tire the guy out and get him out of position so you can take that shot and capitalize,” he said.

From there, NYU coach Now-Allah James watched Paredes at a weeklong tournament and one-day camp

in New Jersey later that summer, and the two talked in person near the end of the tournament/camp.

“I went up to him and he said he remembered me (from the email and video I sent him),” Paredes said.

A couple of weeks later, the two set up a date in which

Paredes would take an official visit to NYU, which occurred in February 2017.

Paredes might be a Gilroy native, but she left her heart in New York City.

“After I took a tour of the city and the campus, he said he hoped I would pick NYU,” Paredes said.

“I said yes right there and then. I didn’t need to think about it. I knew this was where I wanted to go to school and play softball.”

Paredes never imagined Wednesday’s scenario: at a table, with loved ones surrounding her, ready to sign a letter of intent. It was

only when college coaches started expressing interest in her two years ago when Paredes started to visualize this happening.

“That’s when I actually started to believe I could get recruited to play college softball,” she said.

Paredes has proven to

be mentally tough, not letting certain situations bother her to the point where it would affect her performance. She stays undeterred and focused, knowing her hard work and dedication to the game will get her closer to her goals.

For any bid proposal submitted on or after March 1, 2015, and any contract for public work entered into on or after April 1, 2015, Section 1725.5 of the California State Labor Code requires that a contractor must be registered with the California State Department of Industrial Relations to be qualified to bid on, be listed in a bid proposal or engage in the performance of any public work contract that is subject to the requirements of this chapter.

“Contractor” includes subcontractors as defined by the Code Section 1722.1. Failure of the contractor and subcontractors to be registered at the time of bidding as required by the labor code shall render the bid as non-responsible.
