COMMUNITY AFFAIR For four decades Gilroyans have successfully pulled together to build the biggest garlic festival in the world.

T

You don’t usually think of Gilroy without also thinking of garlic, and vice versa. One word always seems

to follow the other. You don’t stand in line between innings at a Giants game at AT&T Park for garlic fries, but for “Gilroy Garlic Fries.” Maybe it’s those shared g’s and r’s and l’s. Alliteration often gets overlooked in the spread of great ideas. Maybe it was the result of a lot of hard work in the realm of agricultural marketing. Either way, the fusing of “Gilroy” and “garlic” has to be one of the most successful examples of branding between place and product in contemporary American history. The two words dance arm in arm around the world.

With the 40th Gilroy Garlic Festival upon us, maybe it’s a good time to remember that when the festival began, neither Gilroy nor garlic had much of a positive public image at all. The Festival itself has been praised for years for the efficiency, the value and the pure fun of the event itself. But the Garlic Festival also represents a triumph of brand marketing. It has carried the name of the city of Gilroy across the world, and it has completely turned around the reputation of garlic. Today, garlic is ubiquitous in American cuisine, beloved for its

bold and pungent taste and versatility. In the last few decades, nutritional science has even found significant health benefits to eating garlic, making it even more popular. Today, in millions of household kitchens, unlike the 1970s when the festival began, you can find a garlic press, maybe a terra-cotta garlic roaster, and bulbs of fresh garlic. But garlic was not always the belle of the ball. For most of the 20th century, garlic was ostracized, largely because of its odor but also because it was associated with immigrants from southern ➝ 6

here is no evidence that Scottish-born 19th-century seaman John Gilroy ever tasted garlic. But today, especially in Northern California, his name (and his namesake city) is as deeply linked to the famously odiferous herb as peanut butter is to jelly.

Europe, said food anthropologist Pauline Adema, who published the book Garlic Capital of the World: Gilroy, Garlic and the Making of a Festival Foodscape in 2009. “The early community leaders (in Gilroy) were able to take this thing that had been a big negative, that had been seen as foreign and stinky—‘the other’ as we talk about in anthropological circles— and, partly because of good timing and geographical location, make it a positive.” The creation story of the Gilroy Garlic Festival is well-known, at least locally. It was the product of a partnership between Gavilan College president Rudy Melone and farmer Don Christopher who, with his brother Art, first began growing garlic in Gilroy in the 1950s. The two were joined by chef and garlic evangelist Val Filice. Melone died in 1998—his stewardship of the Festival earned him a New York Times obituary. But a year before his death, he told writer Jenny Midtgaard, that “there was

a general air of embarrassment about garlic,” at the time of the Festival’s founding. Melone, Christopher and Filice spearheaded a small group of community leaders, each of whom took on a role crucial in the success of the fledgling festival. Assigned to engage the world outside Gilroy were two women: veteran publicist Caryl Saunders, and Karen Christopher, Don Christopher’s wife (Karen Christopher eventually was divorced from Don Christopher who then married another woman named Karen, so there are two Karen Christophers in the Gilroy garlic story). In 1978, a year before the first festival, Melone and Don Christopher hosted a Rotary Club event at Christopher Ranch that could be seen as a kind of mini Garlic Festival. Karen Christopher (the first) credits Saunders for inviting several key media figures to that event, including Betsy Balsley, the food editor for the Los Angeles Times who was so charmed by the

event, she encouraged Don Christopher to make it an annual event. Balsley’s enthusiasm was the first indication that Gilroy’s rehabilitation of garlic might play favorably to the world outside. Karen Christopher sits in her Morgan Hill home, holding an old spiral-bound book. It’s the 1980 California Media book, a resource guide featuring the names and contact information for scores of newspapers, magazines, radio stations and television stations. “I had never done promotion before,” she said. “I’m not one to think small. I saw this as a larger opportunity for the industry and the community. So I bought this.” The first Gilroy Garlic Festival had been a small success, and there were media members there to write about it. But the second year, Christopher decided to vault into another realm altogether. She wrote press releases on the festival and sent them out (snail mail only, of course) to media outlets all over California and many around the country.

Many of the press releases were printed verbatim in newspapers and periodicals across the country.” The strategy was simple, to blanket the media with news releases to create a kind of momentum for coverage. She cold-called TV producers, got people booked on talk shows, set up photo shoots and cooking demonstrations. She employed the festival’s secret weapon, the charismatic chef Val Filice who would do radio gigs cooking a few of the festival’s signature dishes in the studio. “The aroma of that garlic would float around the studio,” remembered Christopher, “and the next thing you know, people are walking in the door, trying to figure out what that wonderful smell was. And Val always had enough to give everyone a sample.” Food festivals were an exciting trend at the time and the image of garlic—the smell, the reputation, all the potentially amazing dishes— proved to be irresistible to the media. Sunset magazine and AAA magazine covered the festival. The Wall Street Journal wrote a ➝8

feature, which was picked up by its satellite publications around the world. Clever wags couldn’t resist the vampire references: The Great Falls Tribune in Montana headlined its story: Count Dracula Would Not Stay at Gilroy Garlic Festival and Cook-Off. “Garlic was the easiest product to ever market,” said Christopher. “If you think about it, you have the food angle, the agricultural part of it, the fun aspects—y’know, the ‘vampires are coming to get you!’—the health aspects. There were so many different ways to cover the story, it just blossomed. Once the word got out, it just grew like crazy.” The first Gilroy Garlic Festival came at a time when the contemporary gourmet food movement was maturing as well, said anthropologist Adema. “What was happening in the Bay Area in the ’60s and ’70s was this food movement expanding. It’s not just (Chez Panisse food icon) Alice Waters—though she just happened to have a garlic dinner a few years earlier—but it

was also ‘hippie’ food, that subcategory of foods associated with the counterculture.” Growing interest in Italian, Greek and Asian cuisines coincided with new ideas about nutrition and there within those overlapping circles stood garlic. The early success of the Garlic Festival as a magnet for curious out-of-town visitors was an example of cultural trends coming to meet an ambitious outreach effort, backed by a well-organized event. “I did have some sleepless nights,” said the first Karen Christopher of those days before the first festival. “There was all this busy-ness going on around me. The entertainment was coming together. The food was coming together, the booths. Everyone in the community who were involved were really putting out all kinds of effort. And I thought, ‘Oh my God! If I don’t do my job, nobody’s going to show up.’” But people did show up. And they haven’t stopped.

et ready to “Party Like It’s 1979,” as the Garlic Festival celebrates 40 years of family fun Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29. Genuine Iron Chef Michael Symon hosts the Garlic Showdown on Sunday, and there’s a new kids’ cooking competition, plus an electronic music DJ tent. There’s also wine. This year’s Wine Garden, sponsored by the Gilroy Rotary, offers sips from the following wineries: Creekview, Fortino, Guglielmo, Hecker Pass, Kirigin, Lion Ranch, Martin Ranch, Medeiros Family, Miramar, Morgan Hill Cellars, Rapazzini, Sarah’s Vineyard, Satori, Solis, Stefania, the Stomping Ground (Alara, Calerrain, Jason Stephens and J Winston) and WildEye. Attendees will be able to purchase wines by the glass or by the

taste, to enjoy with garlic bread, calamari and other comestibles. The cost for a 6-ounce glass of wine will be $9. Tickets can be purchased for single 6-ounce pours or three 2-ounce tastes. An abundant selection of the Valley’s finest will be offered, including bubbles, Bordeaux, Italians, Rhones and more. Jane Howard, director of the Gilroy Welcome Center, says the wine garden is one of Gilroy Rotary Club’s top two fundraisers annually and serves wine all three days from 10 am to 6 pm. A special wine-tasting guide is being created by Articulate Solutions and the Welcome Center for people to use in making decisions about wines to taste. B

eing the Garlic Capital of the World means there are plenty of garlic goodies to be found in Gilroy, but growing your own garlic may be the most rewarding way to celebrate this cousin to onions, shallots, chives and leeks. In late spring, garlic plants may not look like much. Their green tops are browning and falling over. By summer, they will be ready to harvest, sharing their underground treasure with cooks of all ages. Whether you use your garlic to braid as gifts, in a hearty Italian

tomato sauce, or to make your own Gilroy favorite, garlic ice cream, late summer is the perfect time to start growing your own garlic. Garlic can be grown in containers, shade gardens, on balconies or windowsills, or in traditional garden rows. As a bulb, it is a resilient plant that can fit into practically any landscape. Before planting your garlic, however, you will want to prepare the soil. You can do this by chopping up disease-free yard and kitchen waste and lay this material on top of the soil or dig it in a few inches.

By the time October rolls around, the worms will have created the perfect growing medium for your garlic. While you can grow new garlic from bulbs purchased at the grocery store, you are better off buying starts from a reputable grower. Grocery store garlic is perfectly safe to eat, but it may harbor diseases that can harm future crops for many years. Garlic comes in two basic forms: hardneck and softneck. The softneck varieties store better, but the hardneck varieties produce bigger cloves that are easier to peel. When you are ready to plant, simply separate the cloves from a garlic bulb and plant them approximately 6 inches apart and 1 inch deep, with the root end down and the pointy end up. That’s it! Garlic has been cited as a cureall and demon repellent, among other questionable attributes, but research has shown that garlic really does repel aphids, cabbage worms, codling moths, Mexican bean beetles, peach borers, and even slugs and snails. In my book, that makes garlic worthwhile simply as a natural pest and disease inhibitor. Of course, I love to eat garlic, so I would plant it anyway! When the leaves start to turn yellow and fall over, gently remove them from the ground, dust off the dirt, and put them in a shady spot for a couple of weeks. If you feel inspired, you can then try braiding your garlic crop, but I have found that it’s a lot harder than it looks. Be sure to save your very best garlic for planting in the following fall. his isn’t Chris Dufur’s first win. In fifth grade he entered a computer science class poster contest and came

in first. “I had a drawing of the Scooby Doo dog and he was sitting at the computer,” Dufur said. “Everybody loved that.” This year, with his mother’s coaxing, Dufur, 33, entered the Garlic Festival’s Art Poster contest for the first time, and won. Owner of Alliance Backflow Services for the past 10 years, Dufur admits he didn’t take art seriously until four years ago. “It’s always been something I wanted to do and it was always a passion of mine,” Dufur said, adding that he works in a variety of genres, including charcoal, pencils, pen and ink, clay and digital art. “It’s almost necessary to have to explore other forms of [art], because it progresses you as an artist,” Dufur said. With his entry, Dufur hoped to create “that feel of Gilroy and that feeling of familiarity.” “I just kind of thought, what’s the best way to present the garlic?” Dufur said. Showcasing the foreground with an overflowing tub of garlic, and the Gilroy hills providing the backdrop, Dufur’s winning entry is a perfect representation of Gilroy. “I wanted the garlic to really stand out and kind of showcase the piece,” said Durfur. “All I had to do was draw the garlic shape, and then I had to put a little bit of purple and

shadow colors. It’s really about the color. Color is very important in the aspect of a painting.” Dufur is very serious when it comes to color, so much so that he actually mixes his own paint. “I do make my own colors, so I usually buy the dry pigment and all the binders,” Dufur said, adding that the entire process takes approximately half an hour for each color depending on the amount. “I just enjoy making my own materials because I feel that I learn more about my craft when I do that,” Dufur said. “I feel I understand the color better.” With the exception of one graphic design class, Dufur is a self-taught artist. He does consider local artist Scott Lance, winner of the 2009 poster contest, his mentor and “an amazing artist.” “He was just someone I always looked up to and inspired to because he had that passion for art, the kind of passion that I do,” Dufur said. His twin brother, Josh Dufur, is also a talented artist. The two worked together on a large mural at the Running Shop and Hops in Morgan Hill. Recently, the brothers collaborated on a poster submission for the Gilroy Rodeo. “We kind of work together a lot in that aspect because we have a lot of good ideas through each other,” Dufur said. Dufur is looking forward to the festival and the opportunity to share his art with the community. He is scheduled to appear 11am-2pm Friday, July 27, and noon-2pm both Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29. “I’m excited for people to actually see my work because it’s going to help me progress and get my name out there, and make me strive to be a better artist,” Dufur said. sk any young lady who’s been named a pageant queen, and she’ll tell you the title was won only after months of preparation. And for some, after years of dreaming about it. But Sloan Pace had never even considered it. “I never really thought I would [be in one] until this one came up,” says the 2018 Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen, daughter of James and Rory Pace. However, a chance suggestion from a friend who participated in last year’s pageant had the recent Gilroy high school grad giving it a second thought.

“She enjoyed it, so I thought I’d give it a try,” the 17-year-old says. It’s a good thing Pace did. Not only was Pace crowned queen at the scholarship pageant held on May 6 at Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park, but she was awarded the $1,000 top prize from the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association (GGFA) as well as Christopher Ranch’s top prize, a $10,000 scholarship. Pace also won the Garlic Speech competition, awarded with $1,000 from Olam. “We prepared for the pageant for around two months,” Pace says. “We met twice a week and did a rehearsal-type thing—we did garlic trivia, practiced our skits and our talents.”

Even though she never saw herself as a pageant queen, her resume of youth activities have certainly prepared her for the title. And they also show Pace’s tenacity in gaining such other crowning achievements. A Girl Scout from age 5 until high school, Pace has been a competitive gymnast for nine years, both as a member of a club team and her high school varsity team, where she served as captain for two years. She also sang with the Gilroy High School Chamber Singers for four years, traveling with them to Ireland, Costa Rica and New York, and took part in Gilroy Unified School District’s Gilroy-Takko Student Exchange Program. As a high school sophomore, Pace stayed with a host family for one week in Gilroy’s sister city, Takko-machi, and was “immersed in Japanese culture,” she says. Little did Pace know the exchange program would prepare her for one of her duties as queen: This September, she will return to Gilroy’s sister city for their Garlic and Beef Festival. Pace was also a member of the Biomedical Science Academy at Gilroy High School, a four-year program. It’s a hefty list of achievements for the young Gilroy resident, who will be entering the University of California-Berkeley this fall. “I’m planning on studying molecular and cell biology with the hopes of going on to medical school after,” she says. “I’d like to work in maternal-fetal medicine, a branch off of obstetrics.” Before heading off to college, though, Pace and her court will appear at several events this summer. She’s enjoying newfound friends in her court. “It was really a collaborative experience with all the other girls in the pageant,” Pace says. “We all got really close. It was nice to build that new family.” Queen Sloane Pace and her court will represent the 40th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival July 27-29.

ith the Gilroy Garlic Festival mere days away, you may be wondering what this year’s event is bringing to the table (other than the strong-smelling bulb). Todd Trekell, the 2018 Gilroy Garlic Festival president, says the festival’s committee surveyed customers last year with the goal to evolve and to meet customers’ needs. He believes these needs will be met this year, with the return of

old festival favorites and some new attractions. Excited to celebrate its 40th anniversary, Trekell gives his Top Ten List of Things To Do at the 40th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival July 27-29.

10. Arts and Crafts Expect to see various South Bay vendors back. “A lot of people forget, yes, we are ‘America’s Premiere Summertime Food Festival,’ but we’re also an arts and crafts festival as well,” Trekell says.

In partnership with the Gilroy Rotary Club, the festival has brought back the Wine Garden, with some additional tweaks “to make it even better,” Trekell says. “It’s just an incredible opportunity for our South County vintners to show off some great wines that they produce.”

The Gilroy Museum is located in the historic 1910 Carnegie Library Building and houses a collection consisting of more than 25,000 items relating to the history of Gilroy. The museum is staffed on a voluntary basis by members of the Gilroy Historical Society and admission is free.
