Sean Carscadden Trio The Sean Carscadden Trio plays a NorCal mix of New Orleans funk, folk and traditional music with a contemporary flavor that gets people dancing. In addition to Carscadden, the band includes bassist Cliff Hugo and drummers Mikey Cannon or Kendrick Freeman.
Tom Sanders San Francisco-based photographer who shoots for a variety of clients including Variety, Russian Esquire, Target and Play Station. He has spoken at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Idaho Historical Society, WWII Museum in New Orleans, and many other locations. Whether photographing or creating films of sub-cultural portraits, celebrities or advertisements, Tom shoots and films with a humanistic approach, his images are never forced and are constantly evoking emotion from the viewer. Acacia House In Bay Area foodie circles, chef Chris Cosentino doesn’t need an introduction. The man behind San Francisco’s carnivore temples Incanto and Cockscomb and winner of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef Masters,” Cosentino is a charismatic star on the local skyline, known for his love of nose-to-tail cooking, cured meats and Italian cuisine.

Now, Cosentino has ventured into wine country with Acacia House, part of the Las Alcobas resort in St. Helena. While the rest of the resort is earthy browns and grays, Acacia House fronts the property with a white facade, situated in a picturesque building with an appealing front porch. The restaurant’s decor and menu strive for a light touch. The dining room is finished in wood and cream colors, and the waiters wear beige and green uniforms that are part golf fashion, part gardening club. The menu is tidy: two snacks, seven appetizers, eight entrées and no specials on my visit. Acacia House BOHÈME | SUMMER 2018
caters to both hotel guests and locals, and there is a conscious effort to appeal to a broad common denominator, with a nice balance of vegetarian options and classic, wellloved entrées like lamb and pork. The seemingly endless supply of excellent housemade breads and whipped butter are easy to love. The bread, multigrain and olive, is so addictive you’ll have to stop yourself before the appetizers arrive. All of this doesn’t mean, however, that Cosentino came to Napa to kick back and tone it down. On the contrary, it seems as if the Napa Valley’s casual, farm-to-table aesthetic has brought out a softer, playful side of him, without taking the flavor away. Beef and pork are standouts here but also look for the hamachi crudo appetizer, fatty slices of amberjack with cubed strawberries, pink watercress and serrano pepper. Acre offers a clean, minimalist industrial design with open-concept floor plan adorned with several communal tables for larger groups, as well as smaller tables and benches for more intimate coffee-drinking sessions. Bear on the Lake Bear Republic Brewing Co. opened in 1995 in Healdsburg, and its second Rohnert Park location on scenic Roberts Lake in Rohnert Park is a hit, too. The menu is typical brewpub fare. For starters, go for the fried calamari, artichoke and spinach dip and macaroni and cheese. The order of calamari is small, but lightly battered and good. The dip is so creamy it runs off of the chips. The best is the macaroni and cheese. The cheese is thick, and it’s garnished with breadcrumbs and herbs that elevate the dish. There are also good burgers (try the “black and blue”). Pizza shines here too. And the beer? Roberts Lake Sunset Wheat is a newer addition to the menu. Get Gott’s Remarkably, Gott’s Roadside manages to serve Niman Ranch grass-fed burgers, inspired ahi poke crispy tacos and an allvegetarian Impossible Burger without a whiff of pretense. Yes, Gott’s has come to Marin County in Greenbrae’s Bon Air Center. It might be their most impressive display of comfort-food-meetsCalifornia-fresh to date. Before it was Gott’s, the original St. Helena roadside burger joint was Taylor’s Refresher, founded in 1949. Brothers Joel and Duncan Gott bought the iconic restaurant in 1999, but didn’t change the name until 2010. A signature neon “EAT” sign confirms the retro/diner vibe, but everything else is modern, open and airy. Stark white walls, an exhibition kitchen surrounded by glass and plenty of blonde wood tables and metal chairs make for a visually stunning interior. Unlike the other locations, the one at Bon Air features a bar with draft beer options, as well as canned
and bottled choices. Extra taps will allow the eatery to rotate seasonal and new microbrews to keep the selection varied. Predominately Napa wines are available by the glass and bottle, and because it’s Marin, Revive Kombucha is also on tap. Gott’s isn’t just for burger lovers. The fresh tacos and inventive salads and sandwiches are not mere afterthoughts. That said, the burgers—including the California, with a fried egg, bacon and arugula, or the Western Bacon Blue Ring, filled with onion rings, Point Reyes blue cheese and bacon—are difficult to resist over a chicken kale caesar. With a family-friendly menu that features just the right mix of familiar (sweet potato fries) and new (kimchi burger), Gott’s is almost certain to be an instant success. Born on a Bayou It started with doughnuts. Beignets, to be more precise. Rob Lippincott grew up in New Orleans, where he became a Merchant Marine captain and later a charter boat skipper. He developed a love for the powdery doughnuts and all-things New Orleanian before moving to California. Lippincott worked as a cook at Healdsburg’s late Bistro Ralph and then took a job as a winery mechanic before striking upon the beignet trade. He sold the quintessentially New Orleans’ doughnuts at farmers markets. He did well, but with a growing family, he had his sights on bigger things.
Rob knew the owner of Santa Rosa’s La Bufa Mexican Restaurant and heard he was planning to retire. I tried to put all my favorite food under one roof. That means a menu of Crescent City classics like red beans and rice, cheese grits and andouille sausage, New Orleans–style egg dishes, fried green tomatoes and po’ boys and beignets. “Beignets and po’ boys are our mainstays,” says Rob. Pilot R&D develops menus and proprietary food and beverage products for companies like Sprig, Exo, Avenir, Primal Kitchen and Barnana. While those projects are hush-hush, Pilot launched its own brand, Render, and has introduced a product called State Bird Seed, a partnership with San Francisco’s State Bird Provisions restaurant.
Bird Seed grew out of State Bird Provision’s transformation of leftover quinoa and seeds into a salty, crunchy snack that’s also used as an ingredient on other dishes. The Pilot team refined the process and created three flavors (sea salt, almond and rosemary, and furikake) and put it all an attractive, co-branded re-sealable bag.

DRINK The North Bay also goes by the name of “wine country.” While most people think of the Napa Valley, emerging winegrowing regions in western Sonoma County produce great stuff along with other famed appellations in Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, Sonoma Valley and even Marin County. But it's not all wine in these parts. The North Bay's beer and craft distilling industries have put the North Bay on the map. Maybe "Drinklandia" is a better name for us.

Awesome Possum On the eve of only their second official week of service, the team at Old Possum Brewing Co. were in good spirits. “I don’t think we’ll have any shortage of customers,” bar manager Jordan Bothe cheerily says of their hideaway location in a south Santa Rosa business park. An avid microbrew hunter himself, Bothe says he’s already seen repeat customers come back, and bring more friends. Also sanguine, Old Possum’s owner and head brewer, Sandro Tamburin, says, “People feel pleasure in finding these kinds of places.” Besides, he’s got a backup plan— an even more under-the-radar brewery that’s been successfully operating on the site for four years. Tamburin’s theme at Old Possum is all about sourcing locally and closing loops where possible. A hard-won food-service permit allows the brewpub to serve bread from Red Bird Bakery down the street with house-prepared bratwurst and pork chops made from animals fed with spent grain from their brewing process at a Windsor farm. On cue, the farmer shows up just as the brewery’s butcher and chef, Christian Velasquez, doles out samples of
wet-brined, house-cured ham. “Better than mine,” he says approvingly. Old Possum’s five beers now on tap include the quaffable Porch Pounder, made with pilsner malt; a collaboration with Fogbelt called Treehugger pale ale (get it—Fogbelt’s beers are all named after redwood trees), made with Admiral Maltings grain from Alameda, and the most “classic California” of the group; the amber, balanced Fuzzy Critter IPA, a hop-forward brew with English-style floral notes; and, the wildest option, a stout aged in Caribbean rum barrels. oldpossumbrewing.com.

Vines by Bike A ride to the all-but-hidden Stubbs Vineyard southwest of Petaluma, paired with wines sourced there by DeLoach Vineyards, makes for a great afternoon. Start in in downtown Petaluma, which has free, four-hour parking, just enough for this 42-mile loop. Passing the Petaluma Creamery, Western Avenue becomes Spring Hill Road, and the scent from eucalyptus windbreaks hangs in the air. A long-horned bull looks up, deep in dry grass, then resumes his determined munching. There are a few vineyards along this road, but more Angus than Pinot Noir. On this side of the hill, patches of green still tint the yellowing hills at the end of June, and green blades stick up around hay bales drying in fields. Here comes the reason why: the sky clouds over and I’m fighting a chilly breeze as ocean air makes one last run inland in late morning. This must be the gappiest place in the Petaluma Gap. For a spell, it might as well be February.
It’s a left at Bodega Avenue and the Coast Guard training center, then push on up Valley Ford Road. Turn left on Fallon-Two Rock Road for a stretch, then right on Alexander, a quiet country lane for half the week until the shooting range fires up from Thursday to Sunday. At last, a left turn back to Petaluma-Tomales Road takes me to Chileno Valley Road on the right. A moderate climb through an oak forested ravine opens to a view of a swan-graced lake. Right on Wilson Hill Road—now this is a climb. At the summit is the goal: a splendid view of Stubbs Vineyard, nestled in a little valley and sheltered from the harshest winds. After enjoying a steep descent, watch your speed on the left at Hicks Valley Road, which leads to Petaluma-Point Reyes Road. Marin-bound bikers can make a pit stop at Marin French Cheese Company to the right; otherwise turn left toward Petaluma. The road is busy but provides a wide, smooth shoulder after passing the vineyards and olive groves of McEvoy Ranch. The sudden shift from country back into town is made gracious by the grand old houses of Petaluma’s D Street.

The sparsely distributed vineyards of the Petaluma Gap region are perhaps best explored on a bicycle. The sights, the smells and, of course, the wind inform a terroir experience that’s rewarding even without opening a bottle—but we will open that bottle.

The Real Bohemians If you’re looking at a map right side up, the namesake river of the Russian River Valley viticultural area appears to hang a sharp left right in the middle of the region, and weaves toward Guerneville through the redwood-forested canyon like a tipsy but determined tippler through an increasingly dark and crowded bar. You might guess that, as a wine region, this artistic enclave and vacation wonderland would harbor the kinds of wineries founded by real bohemians, and you’d be right about that in the case of Korbel Champagne Cellars, whose estate vineyards have hugged a bend in the river since the latter quarter of the 19th century. Korbel was founded by three bohemians from Bohemia, proper.

Confused? Long before the term “bohemian” was associated with impoverished artists drinking absinthe in louche company, it mainly applied to a region of hardworking German-speakers in the western part of what’s now the Czech Republic. Not that student Francis Korbel didn’t get himself into a spot of radical fallout in 1848, the

tumultuous granddaddy to 1968’s Prague Spring, with similar results. For his part, Korbel was sent to the Daliborka Tower prison in Prague Castle, a fate that might only seem romantic if you’re drinking cheap Czech beer and scribbling in your notebook about it circa 1992. Still, long after Korbel got out, allegedly sauntering out the gates in civilian clothes, he memorialized his dreary imprisonment by building a brick tower reminiscent of Daliborka at his winery on the banks of the Russian River. You’ll learn all this and more on the free tour at Korbel, which includes a smart, Ken Burns– esque documentary screened in a little theater with wooden pews for seats—sweater-vestwearing historian narrator not optional! The tour starts in the railway station of the Korbel brothers’ own stop on the San Francisco and North Pacific Railroad—something to think about on your drive west on River Road, which was originally built as a railroad, not an auto road. korbel.com

JitN offers an emerging artists program that gives these young musicians opportunities to perform live at concerts, alongside professionals. Players are selected mainly through teacher recommendations from local schools, and perform at venues throughout the Bay Area. “The reality is that in the tradition of the art form, mentoring has always been a really vital and
essential part of the process,” Guarneri says. “You can learn more in 10 minutes on the bandstand than a whole semester in a classroom.” Most of JitN’s concerts are free, because Guarneri believes that giving back to the community is the best way to become part of it. Guarneri, who lives in Fairfax, teaches trumpet at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and performs with two of his own jazz groups, has enjoyed a successful career in the music business, including 15 years with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, 10 years playing on TV and movie soundtracks and recording four CDs. “For me, it’s a way of giving back for the great life that I’ve had in the music business,” he says of JitN. jazzintheneighborhood.org

Rock Artist For the last several years, graphic artist Katie Kincade has made her mark on music in Sonoma and Marin counties as an in-demand concert-poster designer. She also produces eye-popping original album art, band logos, T-shirts, drumheads and more. “I’ve always been doing art in one form or another,” says Kincade. Growing up in Southern California, she moved to San Francisco to study fine art at San Francisco State and moved to Petaluma in 2005. A photography major, with a minor in graphic design, Kincade says she didn’t do much with the degree until a friend in rock band the Grain asked her to make a logo for them.

Kincade’s main source of inspiration is her favorite band, the Grateful Dead, which
influences her overall look, best described as a twisted throwback to concert art of the 1960s. Many of her posters depict nature scenes, like rosebeds or waterfalls, bordering psychedelic representations of people or animals that swirl within circular patterns and jump off the page in striking poses.

She did, and then she made a concert poster for them, then another and another. Word of mouth spread quickly, and now Kincade works full-time as a graphic artist, working almost strictly with local bands and festivals. Kincade’s work is marked by highly detailed, densely layered and colorful splashes of illustration that complement a musician or band’s sound. Her portfolio includes work for Steve Kimock, the Greyboy Allstars and Poor Man’s Whiskey, and venues like Terrapin Crossroads and HopMonk Tavern.

Sweet Songs In the eight years that vocalists, multiinstrumentalists and songwriters Erin Chapin, Caitlin Gowdey and Vanessa May have lived and played together as Rainbow Girls, their collective spirit has helped them grow as individuals, too. “Playing as part of this collective has given me an opportunity to find harmony in my own life, in the most natural sense of the word,” says May. “To bring that to other people is really important, and has been a driving force for me.” SONOMA COUNTY

Last year, Rainbow Girls unveiled their first album as a trio, “American Dream,” which touches on experiences of love, loss and what May calls the political storm going on. “There’s been a lot of dissonance around, people having a hard time finding where they fit in,” she says. “Rainbow Girls’ and my own journey with this is to help people find that harmony in their own lives.”

Named after the so-called Rainbow House where the three first met and hosted weekly open mics while attending school in Santa Barbara, Rainbow Girls moved to Bodega Bay after college, living in a cottage on Gowdey’s grandparents’ property when they’re not touring the U.S. or Europe. There they continue to cultivate original, richly layered, three-part harmonic folk music and connect to the North Bay musical community through a weekly open mic series at the house. “We moved up to the North Bay, and at first felt like it wasn’t home because we were traveling so much and had such deep roots in Santa Barbara, but as soon as we started doing open mics again, we realized we do have friends here and we do have something to contribute to this community,” says May. “And in that, we’ve seen so much of our own growth.”

Ever since late 2015, when Santa Rosa Symphony conductor and music director Bruno Ferrandis announced his plan to step down from the podium after the 2017–18 season, the symphony has searched the globe to find his successor. The search is over. Thirty-year-old Francesco Lecce-Chong begins his tenure with the orchestra next season.

Born in San Francisco, Lecce-Chong is a rising star in the classical world. He is currently also conductor of the Eugene Symphony in Eugene, Ore., and this summer he wraps up his stint as associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Lecce-Chong is excited about expanding the community's access to music. "I'm passionate about making sure that people of all ages and all backgrounds have a chance to experience what we do," he says. That sentiment is a major component of the symphony's mission, and Lecce-Chong praises its youth orchestra as well as its various school and after-school programs. "It's important that we not only invite kids to the concert hall, but that we go to them and offer our services," says Lecce-Chong. "I want to be with an orchestra that has those priorities."
