Celebrate the best Through painstaking deliberations and difficult decisions, the community voted for their favorites. Now, in this issue, we unveil the winners of the annual Best of San Benito awards. Readers had the chance to vote for a variety of businesses, organizations and more through an online ballot that was live for a month. With more than 100 categories to consider, at least

20 selections had to be made in order for the ballot to count We received numerous entries, with the community telling us their favorite places to eat, where to shop, what they like to do on the weekend and more. The results show many old favorites have once again reclaimed their titles, but plenty of others have been voted the best for the first time.

moke Point BBQ and Provisions has the feel of a classic diner with modern tastes. Its first location, which opened in 2020, is situated in a converted house at 206 Fourth St. in San Juan Bautista, complete with checkered tablecloths, ‘80s rock and roll music and MotorTrend TV playing on the television. Earlier this year, Smoke Point opened a second location at 1709 Airline Highway in Hollister. The restaurant is headed up by Michelinstarred Chef Jarad Gallagher, who has worked in a kitchen for three decades. He became a sous chef at 19 and an executive chef at 21, training at Le Cordon Bleu, a culinary school in Paris teaching French cuisine. After working for Michel Bras’ famed

Best BBQ Restaurant: Smoke Point restaurant, Le Suqet—which has been classed several times as one of the top 10 restaurants in the world—Gallagher returned stateside to work at some of the most renowned restaurants in the Bay Area. Smoke Point offers classics such as brisket, baby back ribs, grilled chicken, tri tip and pulled pork along with other options including smoked portobello mushrooms and jalapeño cheddar sausage. The corn bread is drizzled with honey and brushed with jalapeño butter. The sides include mac and cheese, Fuji apple and ginger coleslaw, barbecue beans and elote. Gallagher’s experience on the grill has not gone unnoticed, as readers voted Smoke Point as the Best BBQ joint in San Benito County. —Erik Chalhoub

San Benito County Historical Park (8300 Airline Highway): For those who really want to take a step in the past make sure to visit the historical village that features Willow Creek School House, Dunneville Dance Hall and Tres Pinos Jail. hat is the name of the magic pills that make you constipated? With only a hint to go off of, “U-No-BLANK,” such was the question brought forth during a Harry Potter-themed trivia night at Running Rooster in downtown Hollister. Having read all the books and seen all the movies, albeit two decades ago, I dug into the deep recesses of my memory to try and remember that very small detail that was only mentioned in a sentence among a series that spanned thousands of pages. On an educated guess, I suggested “Poo” as the fill-in-the-blank word. Score one point for Ravendor (our team name, a mashup of two names Harry Potter fans will know). At the end of the twohour marathon, our team ended up eighth out of 16, an impressive middle-of-the-road feat considering we were casual Potter nerds. On a recent Wednesday night, no seats were available in the bar area at Running Rooster, as Harry Potter fans showed up in droves for the themed trivia night organized by Geeks Who Drink. Our team was stationed at the window looking out to downtown, where the hustle and bustle of the weekly farmers market on San Benito Street was beginning to wind down. A regular told me the weekly trivia gatherings at the Hollister

favorite that began more than a year ago have proven to be a big hit. Running Rooster is also a regular in the annual Best of San Benito awards, this year voted Best Family Restaurant, Brunch, Burger, Cocktails and French Fries by readers, while Amy Moore was honored as Best Waitress. On a suggestion, I ordered a pepperoni pizza, a staple of the menu. Although our server told us the personal pizza was about medium-sized, I wasn’t prepared for the generous size of the pie, which is always a nice surprise when dining out. The gooey mozzarella cheese, not-too-crispy pepperoni was coupled with the crust fired to perfection. Even better, I had enough to take home
