Through painstaking deliberations and difficult decisions, the community voted for their favorites. Now, in this issue, we unveil the winners of the annual Best of Morgan Hill awards. Readers had the chance to vote for a variety of businesses, organizations and more through an online ballot that was live for a month. With more than 100 categories to consider, at least

20 selections had to be made in order for the ballot to count. We received numerous entries, with the community telling us their favorite places to eat, where to shop, what they like to do on the weekend and more. The results show many old favorites have once again reclaimed their titles, but plenty of others have been voted the best for the first time.

ood trucks became a product of the Covid-19 pandemic when bars and taprooms such as Kelly Brewing Company had to follow mandates of serving food in order to remain open. At the time, taproom manager Isaac Laing was just trying to pivot and go with the flow as the restrictions began to lessen up. Once everything got “back to normal,” as Laing put it, he continued to bring back the food trucks and noticed having them around was better for business. “We're giving them a space,” he said. “It's good for them, it's good for us.” Laing calls it more of an agreement since Kelly Brewing Co.—which opened in 2018—is not profit sharing with any of the vendors. His biggest goal in all of this is attempting to have a food

truck or pop-up restaurant just about everyday, especially when special events are happening simultaneously. The brewery will test for knowledge during trivia night on Tuesday evenings, while those who enjoy live music can show up to a jam session on Wednesday. “We're just trying to make it the hangout,” Laing said. Laing likes to rotate the vendors and mentioned that certain days are busier than others. He said it’s mostly about narrowing it down to what customers are craving. Some vendors have designated days such as Vegan Vendetta on Monday and Dre’s Good Eats on Wednesday. On Friday, he’ll switch it up the best way possible by bringing in popular trucks such as La Patrona Comida Mexicana based out of Hollister. —Juan Reyes

fter 45 years, Rosso’s Furniture & Decor went under new ownership in 2023, but brothers Jaime and Anthony Rosso didn’t have to look far to find someone to pass the torch. Jaime’s daughter Sarah Rosso and her business partner Melissa O’Malley took the helm of the longstanding furniture business, with locations in Gilroy and Morgan Hill, and are in the process of a rebirth of the business with a number of new ideas. Rosso said the business’ customer base stretches from south San Jose to Monterey County, as well as Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. “The customer experience is everything to us,” she said. “We want them to feel welcome from the moment they walk through the door to delivery.” Rosso grew up in the business, starting off as a receptionist 27 years ago as a high schooler who did a lot of what she called the “grunt work.”

She took every opportunity she had to learn the ins and outs of the business, shadowing Jaime and Anthony, who opened the store in Gilroy in 1978. She also spent time with the other managers, including Mary Aguire, who Rosso said was a major inspiration for her. Working her way up at Rosso’s Furniture, Rosso said she always had a goal in mind. “Since I was a little girl, I dreamed of becoming the owner one day,” she said. “But did I really believe it would happen?” That dream has now come true. The Rosso brothers are known for being active members in their community, volunteering, sponsoring, donating and advocating for schools, teachers and students alike, and that is something Sarah Rosso said will continue with the new ownership of the business. “Giving back is a big part of who we are,” she said. —Erik Chalhoub

for 2023. The two-year distinction was announced in January by the California Distinguished Schools program. The program, administered by the California Department of Education, selected 356 out of 5,872 California elementary schools (the top 6%) as Distinguished Schools. Charter School of Morgan Hill (CSMH) serves grades K through 8th at its campus at 9530 Monterey Road north of town.

“This award is truly a testament to the whole—our staff, parents, students and community,” CSMH Principal Susan Pfefferlan said. “We pride ourselves on being a family of learners and this is validation of our commitment to project based learning and fostering the development of the whole child.” When it comes to on-campus curriculum, CSMH focuses on its “unique project based learning model,” which encourages students to explore and experiment in a collaborative hands-on environment, and equips students with the problem solving and critical thinking skills to become “lifelong learners.” —Michael Moore

he parking lot at the corner of Depot and First streets in downtown Morgan Hill opened in 2019 to accommodate the rising traffic in the area thanks to new businesses at the Granary and its surroundings, although it remains unfinished to this day (actual painted lines are much needed). Step outside your vehicle, and chances are you’ll be greeted by a friendly cat or two who lives in the neighborhood. They’ll purr, rub and talk to you, perhaps trying to spot a treat. uge crowds fill the grassy grounds of the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center every Friday night in the summer for an evening of live music, dancing, food and family fun during the Friday Night Music Series. Put on by the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce, the series of 10 weekly concerts ran from June 16 to Aug. 18 this year. “It’s a great event,” said Tom Blount, a Morgan Hill resident since 2003 who attended the July 14 concert that featured the opening act of the JJ Hawg Duo and the top bill, Pop Fiction. Perched in a low-back

folding chair with a pizza box at his side, he added, “I’ve come to this event in the past and it’s always worth it. The music is just great.” From kids to adults, the concrete dance floor pulses with dancers to an unbroken chain of tunes into the evening as a light show sprays across the crowd from above. The free Friday gigs also include food tables, face painting, goods for sale and more. Each concert features an opening act, followed by a headliner. —Tarmo Hannula
