irst: yes, it’s true, this is not your grandfather’s senior magazine. In fact, as the writers in this issue illustrate over and over again, no one even wants to be called a “senior” anymore, because no one feels like one. That’s one meaning of this magazine’s admittedly tongue-in-cheek name: taking on this new phase of life is a project, and a new generation of retirement-age boomers is redefining what the word can mean. As local boomer comic Richard Stockton says in this issue, “I’m going to act my age and effect more change than I ever have. I’m going to act my age and stay strong.” But it’s not just the boomers; Richard von Busack stands up for the cuspers in these pages as well. Sven Davis writes about how the wild thing is no longer just a young person’s game, and June Smith profiles Vann Slatter, a shining example of how we can completely re-invent ourselves in our second act.

The common denominator to all of these compelling stories is passion. Let that be the guiding principle of this senior project.

Boom with a View A boomer comic reflects on how his generation has changed the way we get old

I

perform mostly in theaters these days, but I did a comedy club recently, and as I walked to the microphone I heard a twentysomething whisper, “Fossil!”

The definition of fossil is “an impression of life in the past, a marker of evolutionary relationships among organisms.” It also means, “A cranky, stubbornly unchanging person.”

I hereby own both definitions. It is my mission to present my baby boomer generation with impressions of our moments of evolutionary change, to remind ourselves how dynamic we are—and all the things we went through to get this way. And I do get cranky. I’ve gone from “born to be wild” to “born to be riled.”

I am Fossil. I am a three-dimensional impression of moments imbedded in the evolutionary layers of baby boomer history.

We’ve gone from Hi-Fi to Wi-Fi. From hot pants to hot flashes. From the ERA to the AARP. From free love to free background checks. From “Hell no, we won’t go,” to “Where the hell did my gingko biloba go?”

The Vietnam War divided my generation and we leading-edge baby boomers continue to split apart. Even now the two halves of my generation come together like a hospital gown.

One half of my generation focuses on protecting their wealth, making sure the younger folks keep the Social Security payments coming to pay for their golf green fees. But the other half of my generation is looking at the final third of their lives as a chance to get it right this time, to make a difference, to make their Aquarian dreams of the 60s live. And one place that is gearing up

for this Silver Tsunami is the adult activity center.

“We’re not putting flat screen TVs and couches in here for boomers to lay around and complain,” says Linda Minton, First VicePresident of the Mid County Senior Center.

“This center will be active!”

Right on! Boomers do not want to go out with a heart attack because their favorite TV show didn’t come on. They want to go out making a TV show that could change peoples’ minds.

“Senior centers are being renamed adult activity communities,” says Janet Sumpter, director of the Los Altos Recreation Center in Los Gatos. “The idea is that everyone brings their talents, their skills, to teach the others.” Changing the name to “adult activity center” fits the new breed coming in. They are becoming meeting centers for boomers to start a rock band, organize community service projects, practice yoga and martial arts, even to produce baby boomer comedy shows.

In the sixties, the four baby boomer elements of the universe were fire, water, air, and vinyl. We communicated our values through the music on that vinyl. When Jimi Hendrix performed the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock, complete with the guitar sounds of the military industrial complex bombs exploding, we could step away from all the patriotic posturing. We internalized this fossil of musical art, and it has become part of how we look at the Vietnam War. When the Beatles sang “it’s getting better all the time,” that was not something we hoped for—we expected it. We required it.We were the first generation that had the audacity to want our work to be fun.

At the beginning of the ’60s, we saw women

kept in the shadows. But boomer women have never lived in the shadows, and they are not going to start now. My life partner and Planet Cruz Comedy co-producer Julie Zito Flannery writes, “Do not underestimate boomer women in society. We have given birth, buried our parents, laid to rest our girlhood dreams, witnessed the heartache and disillusion of our generation. We have taken on the job of rebirthing hope and meaning to the lives of our aging peers, and inspiring our grandchildren with our undying optimism.”

Bob Dylan was not kidding when he wished us to be “forever young.”

We have no intention of giving up sex, drugs and rock and roll. We invented the drugs that let us keep having sex, drugs and rock and roll.

As I get older, people refer to my “decline.”

I think “change” is more accurate. It is true that on the baseball field my foot speed is gone. There are a lot of places for a fly ball to land around me. My son said, “Dad, you look like a man playing baseball under water.” Even hitting the gym five days a week, I have maybe 80 percent of the strength of when I was 28. But my emotional growth, my ability to turn fear into excitement has grown tenfold.

Except when I’m cranky.

I’m bringing my boomer comedy show to the Mid Town Senior Center because I am one with my baby boomer audience, hungry to laugh at the fossilized moments of evolutionary change we lived. I am told sometimes to “act my age.” I'm going to act my age and effect more change than I ever have. I'm going to act my age and stay strong. I’m going to act my age and learn to dance like MC Hammer and call myself MC Fossil. It’s Fossil Time!

y fellow UCSC Slug David Lowery and his band Cracker recorded a song with the lyrics “I hate my generation/I offer no apologies.” They have a point. Younger people, seeing me tottering along, presume I’m another withered casualty of the baby boom—just one more greybeard sucking up oxygen that rightfully belongs to them.

Hardly.

Some six years ago, a PR executive named Marian Salzman targeted people born from 1954-65 as “cuspers.” Similar terms include “baby busters” or “busters,” though isn’t “Buster” a dog’s name?

Let me dispense with the spurious royal “we” of the newspaper writer to use the well-earned “we” of a person born during these 11 years. If born in 1954-65, we were 21 in 1975 to 1986. What a difference between those two dates in America: the economic hilarity of the Ford era on one side, the imperial purple of the haute Reagan years on the other. Key to the Cusper Experience is grousing about long-dead politicians who no one under 50 can be expected to remember. No one calls President Obama (born 1961), a “boomer,” unless the person using the term knows for a fact that Saul Alinsky controls Obama’s every move from beyond the grave.

We’re a mixed bag. Matt Groening deconstructs the kind of work director/producer Ron Howard likes to do, and they were born in the same year. The sacred naissance of Kenny G. occurred within 12 months of the first infant wail of shock-punker G.G. Allin. Add Oprah and Bill Gates and Eddie Van Halen in there, and the personalities resist pureeing into a rich tasty cultural sludge.

Certain musical objects held sacred by almost all Cuspers, such as the first four Led Zeppelin albums, loom out of the demographic fog. But Sirius radio’s computers decide that the Commodores’ “Brick House”—danger, unreinforced masonry!—makes a nifty

segue with America’s droning “Horse With No Name”. Why? Because they’re both tunes from the 1970s. “Let’s Get it On” and “Time in a Bottle?” Same decade, same difference.

We brought up the tail end of the vast demographic tsunami of babies created by homecoming soldiers. No Depression, no Good War—and thank god for that. A lot of us never wore khaki, or heard a bullet fired in anger if we did.

William Manchester, the historian and Marine vet of the Pacific War, observed that if kids rapidly zipped the metal zipper on a sleeping bag, they could see dad hit the deck, since the noise sounded exactly like an 88mm shell in flight. I never got a chance to find out if this trick would work—my own father was stationed stateside in the mid-1950s at a radar base in Maryland. No one had a greater appetite for war movies and service comedies than my dad. He induced in me a cinematic allergy for these genres, and no cortisone will cure it. (Having said that— the very good Fury is the exception that proves the rule, and it was co-produced and starring the well-known Cusper, Brad Pitt, born 1963).

We Cuspers share some frames of reference—at least half to two-thirds of the SNL 40th anniversary special was made for us, and TV’s Batman (1966-8) has stunning implications that we cannot escape nearly 50 years later. We can blame it on underaged geeks if we like, but we must be held responsible for the fact that every third movie and TV show today has superheroes. We’re so obsessed, we’ll even put up with the writing on TV’s Gotham, and tolerate Jada Pinkett Smith’s reaction shots. Happy news, Cuspers—we’re now officially Alfred the Butler’s age, since actor Michael Pertwee was born in 1964. Many Cuspers I know have Alfred’s job today: following a wealthy child around and asking him if he wants some refreshments.

Many of us were raised with a great deal of slackness on the leash—“Why don’t you hitchhike down to the mall and pick up some lawn darts and some food with red dye #2 in it?” We survived it somehow. We weren’t children of the munificence of the 1980s. We still echo our Depression-raised parents’ outrage when someone wastes food or throws away usable stuff.

Many of our numbers taught school, created brilliant programs and cured cancers. The most distinguished of our generation became renowned microbrewers. In the meta-sense, though, we were just sort of there, enduring gas lines and meat price hikes and stagflation, taking care of one damn thing after another, on our journey from underachievement to semi-retired status. We remember the way shiny polyester clothes stank from sweat. We remember when disco sucked. And now we’re pushing 60 and looking to get out, imagining ourselves on the decks of cruise ships if we made it, or studying online photos of retirement property in Ajijic if we didn’t. We’re Facebooking pictures of our children, now in their early 20s and ready to make the same mistakes we did.

Let’s Get It On Why no one is giving up sex in the age of the cougar BY SVEN DAVIS

T

here’s this old joke, you’ve probably heard it, where an injured man asks his doctor if he’ll be able to play the piano when the bandages come off.

“I don’t see why not,” the doctor says. And the patient says, “That’s funny, I never could before!”

I think of this joke whenever I see a product, or treatment, or article promising that amazing sex is easy in our retirement years.

Such news must be met with mixed reactions by younger people with terrible sex lives. The lesson for them: It’s a long wait, but worth it.

Have you noticed we hardly ever hear the phrase “dirty old man” any more?

We seem to have moved past the notion

that anybody in middle age or older with a sexual appetite has something wrong with them. This is the age of the cougar. The grayhairs of today lived through the ’60s, and that free love stuff got into their bones. So to speak. They’re not getting shamed into giving up the grunt, no sir.

The mood may be strong, but the biology sometimes needs a little assistance. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. They have slippery in a bottle now. And hormone therapy.

And buzzy super-stimulators. Not to mention the little pills that no active elders can do without.

I’m talking of course about Ibuprofen. Because, you know, the knees.

Oh and yes, there are also the boner pills, but everybody’s so aware of them they hardly seem worth mentioning. At first, they were this super shameful thing people just whispered and joked about, but now they’re so mainstream I think we’re about a year away from seeing them crumbled up as a topping at Yogurt Hut. One side effect of this senior lovin’ trend is a dramatic increase of STD rates among that demographic.

Retirement communities make very happy hunting grounds for eligible singles, and when worries about pregnancy go out the window, so do the condoms (don’t worry, they self-deploy like little parachutes

before hitting the ground). So isn’t it about time you sat down with your grandparents to talk to them about chlamydia?

An important thing to understand about these pills is that where there’s a way, there’s not always a will. Science and the free market has brought us myriad ways to have sex forever, but what if you just don’t feel like it? Blue pills can’t make you want to have sex. Only champagne can do that. Sometimes.

With some people.

A reliable aphrodisiac has been sought by humanity for thousands of years, with results ranging from comic to revolting to sad, as in the case of the killing of exotic animals in an attempt to extract their mojo.

Powdered tiger penis anyone? It’s traditional!

Some people just don’t have a big sex drive, and they’re quite content. There are plenty of other ways to experience intimacy and express appreciation of their partner. Those ads about swinging into their nineties might make them feel inadequate, which is of course advertising’s job. It’s too bad sexual apathy can carry a stigma, though I’m grateful it spawned the following joke: A young prostitute approaches an elderly man and says, “Hey Mister, how about some super sex?” “What?” the man says, holding his hand to his ear. “Super sex!” She shouts. He thinks for a moment and says, “I’ll take the soup!”

Growing Into It How Hunter Hill’s Vann Slatter got from Navy SEAL to winemaker

T

hough his life story is the stuff of action flicks, Vann Slatter has found a new role he says makes him the happiest: grower and winemaker for Hunter Hill Vineyards. Now 68, Slatter describes himself at age 17 as “just a Capitola surfer, sittin’ on the seawall, going nowhere.”

But he was also very much in love with a girl named Christine. If he was going to win her heart and provide a good life for them both, he’d need to find a job and start building their future, so he joined the Seabees and was deployed to Vietnam. There, while working as a carpenter, he came across an underwater demolition group who were the predecessors of the Navy SEALs (Sea, Air, and Land teams).

“They wore flip-flops, shorts and were blond and cool,” Slatter says. “They said if I could swim, I should apply to join them.”

He learned that SEALs tests took place in the Philippines, and didn’t hesitate to sign up.

In a class of 1,000 enlisted men, he successfully endured four days of rigorous running and swimming tests, finishing among the final 100 who qualified for training in Coronado, California. During those grueling six months, many classmates quit, but Slatter was among the final 17 remaining students. Next, during a probationary period, while he worked with teams of experienced men, Christine, now his wife, moved to be with him in San Diego.

tours with the SEALs, and during his second tour the commanding officer assigned him to a special job in Hawaii. He trained with a small crew to recover Apollo IV, the first unmanned shot that went around the moon. Their job was to secure the Saturn V launch vehicle with a flotation device when it landed in the ocean, so it couldn’t scoot away or sink. This test flight was ultimately used by the Apollo program to send the first men to the Moon.

In retelling the experience, he says, “There we were, three guys and a jumpmaster, waiting 400 feet above the ocean in a helicopter in the dark and we see nothing.” When the craft finally came rushing up, he was so freaked that all he could do was stare until the jumpmaster said, “Mr. Slatter, will you be jumping with us today? Go!” He leapt into the water below and got the craft contained with the collar while another teammate secured it with a 400-pound hook – not an easy feat. Then the group sat waiting in a small boat for an aircraft carrier to pick them up, horribly seasick from the huge swells and burned from leaked aviation fuel. The carrier missed them on the first try. Despite this, Slatter says he would do it all over again, and recalls how as a kid he’d get up at 3 a.m. to watch the Gemini shots.

In 1984, Slatter’s next chapter began when the couple launched Slatter Construction. The company found success building on the abilities to manage people effectively and devise

quick, creative solutions under pressure that he learned in the SEALs. In 2000, Slatter handed the presidency over to son Sid. Today, as the award-winning winemaker at Hunter Hill Winery, Vann tends 14 acres of pinot noir, syrah, merlot and zinfandel grapes, making wines on land the family has owned for more than 100 years. His wife Christine says, “This part of his life defines who he is today. I know he believes this is the pot of gold—or red wine— at the end of his rainbow of life.”

He’s proud of the special pinot noir bottling he’s done for the Warrior Foundation, for which 100% of the proceeds fund scholarships and special needs of families of SEAL soldiers.

“Once a SEAL, you never get out mentally,” says Slatter. “I can’t do the things I used to do, but I can make wine.”

Slatter is now content to wake up each day with Christine on the vineyard property, taking in the postcard view of the duck pond, the beautiful gardens, and the rolling vineyard. He says that, at the end of the day, “No matter what happens, you can always open a bottle of good wine.”

Finding the Friendlies How Road Scholar excursions changed the way I travel

o two bucket lists are the same, but for most of us, they include travel. And for me, a trip holds no interest unless I am in or near the water. I’ve swum with wild Spinner dolphins in Hawaii, taken a nighttime dip in Puerto Rico’s Phosphorescent Bay, and placed a three-day-old Golfina turtle onto a beach near Acapulco for an ocean journey that could take it anywhere in the world.

But how to find these kinds of experiences?

After my husband and traveling companion Jim passed away, I discovered Road Scholar,

and organization offering 5,500 educational tours in 50 states and 150 countries. In no time, I was joining 22 other adventure lovers for an up-close-and-personal encounter with gray whales on the Baja Peninsula. It’s an eight-day, seven-night trip by motor coach to the lagoons of Baja Sur to witness one of the most incredible natural phenomena in the world.

Each fall, gray whales travel 5,000 miles from the Arctic Ocean to these shallow, warm lagoons to court, mate, give birth and care for their young, remaining until April. On 20 >

our way there, Andiamo Travel, the company conducting the tour, passed through the deserts of Baja, where we observed the bizarre boojum tree, towering cardon cactus and other endemic plants.

When we reached Guerrero Negro, the point of entry to the state of Baja California Sur, local marine biologists told our group that 1,500 whales were in residence, and a small percentage, the “friendlies,” would allow us to touch them. Andiamo Travel reserves small boats, or pangas, two years in advance, as each day only a few are allowed in the lagoons

for no more than 90 minutes. We visited Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, where we observed about 50 of these giant mammals at arm’s length.

The next day, we endured a bumpy 40-mile ride on an unpaved road to San Ignacio Lagoon, where almost every one of us made direct contact with mama whales proudly presenting their babies. One baby actually brought its mother to us, and the two cavorted around and under our panga for almost 15 minutes. Then the baby swam over to a boat carrying several children and lay alongside so they could all pet it. It was

the photo opportunity of a lifetime, and none of us who witnessed this incident will ever forget it.
