Back in the ’70s and ’80s, a colorful term emerged to describe players like George Shirakawa. These would be people who made a career of hopping from one publicly funded program to another. Sometimes they did some good for those in poverty. Often they
Last weekend, I was dragged, still protesting, to Les Misérables. I had read Richard von Busack’s review (“Just Miserable,” Dec. 26) and was anticipating two-plus hours of tedious, overblown hooey. In the first minutes of the film,
however, I was relieved by a spectacle that was obviously well produced, and soon I found myself absorbed in the lives of Fantine, Jean Valjean, Cosette and Javert. I found the casting surprisingly excellent, the acting consistently convincing (despite singing parts, verse and close-ups that von Busack derided). The director, Tom Hooper, is to be congratulated for bringing Hugo’s behemoth, via the stage production, successfully to the screen. There were not many people in the theater that evening, but those few, as the credits rolled, applauded. Hopefully, they found the film, as I did, fresh and full of heart. With that historical clincher in mind, the urban-blight exploration junkie fell off the wagon and recently surveyed that same stretch of road as it exists today. Ghosts of pizza joints, neighborhood bars and muffler man statues from ancient times added to an already gorgeous travelogue. As with many acts of exploration, the pillars of self, time and space underwent a profound transfiguration. First of all, nothing on that stretch of road qualifies as “blight,” so that made the junkie feel better right away. Hope emerged right off the bat, and it didn’t take long to walk down Willow from First Street to the Highway 87 overpass. As with any interesting part of San Jose, it has to be experienced on foot to appreciate the historical curiosities that emerge from behind every storefront.
Decades ago ago, for example example, this neighborhood was highly Italian in character. I was barely alive, but a quick inspection of the city directories illuminates just how thriving this working-class neighborhood actually was. It was part of what was then famously called Goosetown, and many shopkeepers lived upstairs from or near their businesses. The whole stretch of road bubbled with activity. There were barbershops, pizza joints, retail and mini-industries of food, repair shops and service professions. Sam’s Log Cabin, for example, occupied 245 Willow St. for more decades than anyone can remember. The legendary Ricardo’s Pizza occupied 218 Willow, pretty much right across the street from Sam’s Log Cabin. Operated by Richard Quisenberry and featuring classic décor of red-and-white checkerboard tablecloths, wooden chairs and Italian accoutrements, Ricardo’s was likewise a popular neighborhood hangout. Extra seating existed upstairs above the kitchen, and a
small stage sat near the opposite wall. Circa 1970/1, a then-unknown group, the Doobie Brothers, were the house band at Ricardo’s, gigging on a regular basis. Warren Arlo Walter was the doorman at Ricardo’s and still has a few of the beer signs. “The famous horn player, Chet Baker, also played often at Ricardo’s on Tuesday jazz night,” Walter recalled. “Chet had some substance abuse issues in those days and Richard actually kept the horn—a flugelhorn I believe it was—so it would not get pawned.” It gets better. During that same era, Babe’s Muffler sat right at the southeast corner of Willow and Almaden, complete with a gigantic statue similar to the one still remaining on The Alameda. That’s right—Babe commanded the corner of Willow and Vine 43 years ago, just like Christ the Redeemer overlooking Rio de Janeiro. At one time, there were even three Babe statues in San Jose. I eagerly await the second coming of Babe at that corner. Someday. It will happen. Just waltzing up and down that stretch of Willow, from the residential area to the industrial environs near the intrusive freeway, ghosts just kept emerging. At 93 Willow, for example, another legendary bar called Stella’s occupied a basement as recently as the late ’80s. That one I do recall seeing myself. Twenty years prior, though, it was a restaurant called Spanish Village. Again, in those days, many of the local folks in the service industries lived just down the street, above their businesses or somewhere nearby—a true community in every respect, before decades of bumbling San Jose planners and suburban sprawl converted everyone to Walmartians. In any event, Badalamente’s Sausage is probably the last remaining Italian joint on that part of Willow left from the older generations. Even the unsightly Highway 87 could not drive it away. It will live on. The rest of this survey will continue at a later date, Babes or not.

The selection varies from day to day, including cheesecake, chocolate truffle, tiramisu, hazelnut Napoleon, hazelnut chocolate mousse and lemon tart. The cheesecake is divided into three layers: cream-cheese frosting, uffy cheesecake ďŹ lling and a thick Graham cracker crust with a hint of caramel. The chocolate truffle consists of simply chocolate cake with thick hunks of chocolate on top and throughout. Both were garnished with a single raspberry. All the cakes are $5.95. The cafe gets its ice cream from Humphry Slocombe, a premium (and quite unusual) ice cream company in San Francisco. Of the roughly 20 establishments that currently carry Humphry Slocombe, Bitter+Sweet is the only one in the South Bay. It is some of the best, sweetest ice cream I’ve ever tasted, plus it’s doled out in 3-ounce scoops, so it doesn’t feel like you’re overdoing it (unless you get two scoops). In addition to somewhat standard avors like Tahitian vanilla and bittersweet chocolate, you can indulge in such atypical avors as Vietnamese Coffee (which tastes like the sweetest, creamiest java ever) and Secret Breakfast (made of bourbon ice cream and corn akes, although it evoked eggnog and cinnamon rolls for me). Single scoops are $3.25, double scoops $4.50. Newly opened VYNE BISTRO, located along Paseo de San Antonio, has seven pinot noirs available by the glass—perhaps a nod to both the red’s Sidewaysinduced popularity and the smooth, versatile flavor of the variety. The new wine bar, previously a Beard Papa’s, sits next to iMiNUSD and Philz Coffee. It had been under construction for what seemed a long time, but the wait is over, and Vyne Bistro is an appealing addition to downtown San Jose for wine enthusiasts. Perhaps in tandem with the style of its youthful neighbors, a very modern, minimalist interior greets patrons with a glossy white bar, as well as black and chrome furniture accented by touches of red in the walls. The clublike interior may project a bit too much L.A. flare for a wine bar, but the conservatively priced menu and knowledgeable staff provide a comfortable balance. Vyne carries more than 40 wines by the glass and half-glass. The prices ($4–$8 for a half-glass, $7–$18 for full glass) are fairly reasonable given the quality and selection. Vyne’s offerings of reds range from rich pinots from France and Santa Lucia Highlands and a medium-bodied Bordeaux from the Haut Médoc appellation to a dark Australian shiraz. For whites, some of the standouts are an organic chardonnay by N’Oak in Napa and a French Sauvignon Blanc from the Sancerre appellation, which is known for its sweet whites and lightly effervescent, sweet gewürztraminers. The best way to enjoy Vyne is with a flight of two or four different half-glasses, keeping in mind some categorical rules of selection, even if it is just whichever best pairs with your cheese plate. In addition to entrees such as an appetizing porcini risotto, gourmet salads and paninis, Vyne assembles cheese and charcuterie platters. The cheeses include a smooth and nutty but infamously fragrant Époisses, a hard, salty Idiazábal, an earthy boschetto al tartufo and the creamy, tangy Humboldt Fog. A selection of three cheeses runs $13 and arrives beautifully arranged with apple slices, honey and nut spread, water wafers and mixed crackers, a strongly fragrant boutique olive oil and fresh grapes—all comfortably sharable among two couples. We don’t move.” Strangelove, among the most well-known Depeche Mode tribute bands, capture not only their sound but their subdued performances as well. Like Depeche Mode, they bring projected videos to shows, and their attention to detail is so fine they even change outfits throughout the concert to look the way Depeche Mode did during the year of whichever particular song they are playing. In the 1920s, Marxist playwright Bertolt Brecht collaborates with socialist composer Kurt Weill on The Threepenny Opera, a satire on capitalist excesses mirrored in a criminal underworld. Some 30 years later, Bobby Darin has a hit (in very capitalist terms) record delivering the lyrics to Threepenny’s most famous number, “Mack the Knife.” With fingerpopping, lounge-singer cool, Darin croons about “old MacHeath’s jackknife” and “a body just oozin’ life.” Kurt Weill: The song enters the pop repertoire. On YouTube, Berlin, Paris, various versions can be sampled, including an unintentionally hilarious duet in which a hip Pearl New York Bailey attempts to parse the lyrics for a square Dinah Shore. As for Weill? Fleeing Nazi Germany, he detours Saturday at 8pm, Sunday to Paris before ending up in America and writing some at 2:30pm; $39–$75 memorable show tunes. California Theatre, San Jose This weekend, Symphony Silicon Valley presents “Kurt Weill: Berlin, Paris, New York,” a classical cabaret, with soprano Lisa Vroman performing a spectrum of Kurt Weill compositions, from The Threepenny Opera Suite (including “Mack the Knife”) and the Seven Deadly Sins to a selection of Weill’s later songs, most notably “Lost in the Stars.” Vroman remembers hearing Darin’s “Mack” when she was young, in “Ella Fitzgerald’s arrangement. My father was a big fan of hers.” The soprano, a veteran of many musicals, first appeared in Threepenny onstage for ACT. She is also well practiced at Seven Deadly Sins, a song-dance work that Weill and Brecht (with choreography by Balanchine) wrote in 1933. The piece tells the story of two Annas—either sisters or perhaps two personas in one body—who travel America experiencing Wrath (L.A.), Lust (Boston), Envy (San Francisco) and the rest before settling down in rural Louisiana. Vroman describes Seven Deadly Sins as “a unique being” that is usually “done with a singer and a dancer, who are two halves of one person” and a male quartet representing members of their family. There will be no dancing for Symphony Silicon Valley, but as Vroman explains, “I have done it with a dancer, which is easy to understand. happier this time; now she plays all three of the Furies at once. If 9/11 was personal to anyone, it’s the spook known only as “Maya” (if that’s really her name; when someone goes around named after the Veil of Illusion, that’s a symbol). Weaker men might have moved on and let a cornered Osama bin Laden die slowly by kidney failure—but not Maya. Zero Dark Thirty takes place over a decade, between 9/11 and the final killing of the madman in 2011. Maya has no personal life (“I’m not the girl who fucks,” she says, as if meaningless sex or Christian warrior chastity were the only options). She has no backstory. Maya is contrasted with the film’s only other woman, a much warmer
CIA associate named Jessica (Jennifer Ehle). Jessica is shrewd enough, but she has a soft little chin made for the tickling, and she’s even planning to bake a cake as a treat for a key informant. Is it possible to fight a war on terror without monomania? Zero Dark Thirty says no, and Jennifer goes out of the picture in an unsurprising way, to winch up Maya’s need to soldier on. Zero Dark Thirty’s opening torture scenes have rustled up plenty of controversy. I, however, see no controversy: Zero Dark Thirty is clearly in favor of torture. The rough stuff is phased out because of Obama, and when Maya and her team get the news from 60 Minutes, you can detect the sinking feeling in the room. Later, there are lines about the impossibility of confirming the bin Laden location with the prisoners: Gitmo internees are allowed to lawyer up nowadays. Until then, Zero Dark Thirty indulges Cheneyian fantasies about the effectiveness of enhanced

methods, complete with the badmovie scene of the prisoner’s defiance: “You’re just a garbage man in the corporation,” shouts the Arab who needs a lesson in manners from the Ph.D. (in torture?) who is racking him. Zero Dark Thirty saves its own face by insisting on the cost of torture—the cost to Maya, that is. Bigelow keeps cutting to the shock and sadness on her actor-surrogate’s face until you barely know who’s getting it worse: the suspect or the duty-bound woman. Bigelow deserves her reputation as an action director in this very long film’s centerpiece: the helicopter mission into Pakistan on bin Laden’s compound. This is expert work. Cutting across from our expectations, the SEALS are as hairy as bears instead of the shaven-headed musclemen we expect from Michael Bay movies. Bigelow alternates intense shots of the airborne ambush with night-vision footage, swirling with gold embers. Th The armored fighters are crowned wi with rows of lenses; it’s an outer-space inv invasion, conducted around a maze of wa wailing children and wives. The pity an and lunacy of war become clear; it’s th the finest part of a movie that sprawls ter terribly. This payoff is postponed, but various oth other terror attacks keep the film rol rolling. Composer Alexandre Desplat arranges some John Barry horns to remind us we’re watching a spy movie instead of ordinary people tapping at keyboards and ignoring their lunches. New figures emerge (such as Mark Strong and Mark Duplass), while the old cycles continue. There’s always a forlorn Christmas tree in the officer’s club, and the muezzins in Pakistan seem to wail 24 hours a day. The film’s numbskull side manifests itself when it implies that no one else remembers September 11 except for Maya and that the attack’s casualties (heard calling 911 during the film’s beginning) all wanted bloody revenge. “Kill him for me,” Maya tells the SEALS. The last bathetic shot of Maya facing a world without her quarry could be scored to Peggy Lee’s hit: Is that all there is to an assassination? Is that all there is?

Brolin, the star, is meant to look like Robert Ryan, but they keep shooting him in profile so you think “Dick Tracy” instead. He leads a group of vigilante cops on the trail of 1940s L.A. thug Mickey Cohen (played by a minionkilling, roast-peacock-eating Sean Penn (beaky, foreshortened and looking like a Rondo Hatton bobblehead). Nick Nolte, of the last bad movie about this era, Mullholland Falls, is once again strangled by a tight collar. As Chief Parker, Nolte sounds like a laryngectomy patient. Spirited Animation ONE COULD sum up these half-dozen jewels scattered by Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki by suggesting that they take their great beauty and narrative tension from two unreconcilable principles: first, that Japan is a sacred land, with a still-living animistic tradition; second, that Japan has been savaged by industry to the point where some reckon it as the most polluted island on the globe. Camera Cinemas’ current six-film series, which runs Jan. 11–17, begins with the introduction many of the West had to Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli: Princess Mononoke, a brilliant, narratively tricky fairy tale of a wounded warrior’s recovery and a wolf-princess’ intervention. Spirited Away, perhaps the best and most enigmatic of his films, won the 2002 Oscar for best animated film. It’s an Alice in Wonderland pastiche, rich with psychological tensions. A daughter’s trespassing parents are turned into swine; thus she’s forced to work as a menial in a traditional spa for ghosts who need R&R. It is a most exquisite meditation on the holiness of water. No one who sees Spirited Away
will ever forget the train sequence—a ride on a causeway with a masked spirit sitting nearby; Japanese cinema is rich with scenes of significant trains and train journeys, but this is one of the most poignant of them all. Castle in the Sky is Studio Miyazaki’s version of Ghibli Series Swift’s Laputa from Gulliver’s Travels, the Jan. 11–17 floating kingdom that Camera 3, hovers over the Earth. My San Jose Neighbor Totoro features the biggest star of Ghibli’s glorious menagerie: the colossal, catshaped protective forest spirit that aids a child whose mother is in the hospital (the balance in Miyazaki is often not of good and evil but of sickness and health). Porco Rosso relates the adventures of a dashing pig who is a biplane aviator in Italy. The early Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is a post-apocalyptic fantasy about a princess holding off a coming war. Six films in 35mm prints, dubbed in English. The subtitled versions are preferable, but most children will be too amazed and delighted to mind. Richard von Busack

Water World A MOSTLY dry-eyed species of wheelchair romance, director Jacques Audiard’s romantic Rust and Bone demonstrates a documentarian’s camera: authentic-looking desperation finessing the seaside sweetness. In the longer-lens shots, sometimes even the beaches look hard used and second-rate. Everything touched by the bruiser Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts) looks semilegit. We first see him in a hejira to his sister’s hard-scrabble place in the south of France, hauling his young son with him. The sister breeds dogs (it’s a low-rent puppy mill), and she helps herself to expired groceries at her job. Ali eventually goes to work for a clandestine surveillance business that chain stores use to spy on their employees. During a pick-up gig as a bouncer at a thuggy nightclub, Ali encounters Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), who has just had her nose bloodied in a fight. She is a troubled killer-whale trainer at a Marineworld-like park. There’s a definite feeling between Ali and Stephanie when they go back to her place together in the wee hours: the possibility is squelched by Stephanie’s male live-in. Shortly afterwards, a freak accident deprives her of her legs, an incident Audiard stages as a dream of underwater horror.
Rust and Bone features Cotillard’s best acting yet, with the delicacy and the existential hardness both visible, both believable. Admittedly, the time honored “where’s the rest of me?” scene is good for any actor. It’s augmented with researched, authentically hard recovery time: after the ordeal, Cotillard’s Iljk Xe[ 9fe\ Stephanie looks R; 120 min. different. It’s more than Opens Friday, just her leglessness: she Camera 3, does a sterling job of San Jose manifesting trauma, of being a hollow-eyed shut in. Not that it robs her of appeal: many a fan would prefer 2/3rds of Cotillard over 3/3rds of a lesser woman. If Rust and Bone sounds like Oscarbait, it is, but it’s honorable and not euphemistic. The procedural details of her rehabilitation are novel. So is her cheer in showing off a bit of a metal prosthetic leg to Ali; she flicks her skirt up and gives him a peek. There’s intelligence here, but more importantly there’s balance between Ali and Stephanie’s stories, which isn’t the usual case in a movie about a working-class fighter and his lady. harmonious place L.A. in the 1940s was by approving this mixed-race band (including a too-sensitive Ryan Gosling, Michael Peña and Anthony Mackie) to get the goods on the megalomaniac Mickey. Locations are a plus: Union Station, Clifton’s Cafeteria, Charles Beelman’s Elks Building for the finale, a good digital recreation of Slapsy Maxie Rosenbloom’s nightclub, with Yvette Tucker doing a first-rate Carmen Miranda impersonation on stage. But the Mexican cop’s name (Navidad) and the forest of gunned-down Xmas trees say everything that the tell-tale January release doesn’t say: this was meant to be a holiday tentpole, but audiences got wise. Stick around for the last third. It’s hilarious rewrite mania: the fates of Mickey’s unfaithful squeeze (Emma Stone) and Brolin’s clay-pigeon pregnant wife (Mireille Enos) must have hung in the balance with every draft. Ultimately, trick gunplay fit to make John Woo cry bullshit meets plotting to make James Ellroy cry, vow to quit and enter the priesthood. (Opens Fri.) (RvB)

Brownout Show BACK IN 2001, California was in the middle of an energy crisis and suffering several large-scale blackouts. As unfortunate as they were, they did inspire what would become an annual tradition in the South Bay—the Brownout show. The first Brownout was at the Fishbowl in Sunnyvale in April of that year and featured Xiu Xiu (a five-piece group at the time) and the Velvet Teen. Both bands played all-acoustic sets as a sort of tip of the hat to the energy shortages. The brownouts ended but the Brownout shows Homestead Lanes kept going. The 11th installment takes place this Saturday with Record Winter, Mike Huguenor, Colorscout and more. As the Saturday, Jan. 12; shows evolved, they have become more of a mixture of acoustic 8pm; $8 and electric indie-rock bands. This year’s featured headliners are the very not-acoustic Record Winter, who have a heavy folk influence layered with lot of processed guitars and keyboards, creating a lush wall of sound. Also sharing the bill is Mike Huguenor (from the punk bands Shinobu and Hard Girls), whose solo EP Bardamu is a self-conscious alt-rock gem. Colorscout, a band that mixes folk, pop and soul, and Cartoon Bar Fight will also perform. Mathew Joseph Payne (from chiptune band the Glowing Stars), Casey Jones (a whimsical, heartfelt folk singer) and James Scott (who hails from Olympia, Wash., and is promoting his new, off beat folk-rock album Kind) round out the bill. The only question is: who is going to strip down and play an all-acoustic set, and who will just play a standard plugged-in full-band set? Considering the threat of a rolling blackout is next to none, we’re betting on the latter.—Aaron Carnes

A better use of resources often is a false-color image—for example, an infrared photo of rocks revealing their mineral composition. At other times, when the goal is to study the shape of the surface, measuring craters and mountains and looking for telltale signs of tectonic shifts or ancient volcanoes, scientists want black-and-white images at maximum resolution so they can spot ďŹ ne detail. Don’t scientists realize the PR value of a vivid color photo? They realize it all right. But the dirty little secret of space exploration is that a lot of the solar system, and for that matter the cosmos, is pretty drab. “The moon is 500 shades of gray and black with tiny spatterings of greenish and orangish glass,â€? Izenberg says. “Mars is red-dun and butterscotch with white ice at the poles.â€? As for Mercury, Izenberg’s bailiwick, NASA has posted on its website detailed color photos showing vast swaths of the planet’s surface. If the accompanying text didn’t tell you they were true-color, you’d never know. False-color images are often a lot more interesting. The colors aren’t faked, exactly; rather, they’re produced by amplifying modest variations in the visible spectrum and adding in infrared and ultraviolet. Done skillfully the result can be striking. The spectacular fullcolor nebula images from the Hubble Space Telescope were all produced by black-and-white sensors with color ďŹ lters. For what it’s worth, some colleagues of Izenberg’s a few years ago oated the idea of putting an off-the-shelf digital camera on a probe in addition to the more expensive models. The idea didn’t get off the ground, as it were, partly out of concerns the camera wouldn’t survive the extreme temperatures of space. But chances are the raw results wouldn’t have been all that impressive anyway. Experience suggests a good space photo needs a little—eh, don’t call it show biz. Call it art.

They’ve thought about it, actually. But the truth is, we’re probably better off the way things are. We got in touch with Noam Izenberg, a planetary scientist working on the MESSENGER probe, which is now circling Mercury taking pictures. He told us there are basically two reasons space photography is mostly in black and white. The ďŹ rst, as you rightly suppose, is that grayscale images are often more useful for research. Most digital cameras, including cheap models in addition to the custom-built jobs on space probes, are monochrome, or more accurately panachrome. Each of the pixel-size receptors in a digital camera sensor is basically a light bucket; unmodiďŹ ed, their combined output is simply a grayscale image generated from all light in the visible spectrum and sometimes beyond. To create a color image, each pixel on a typical earthbound camera has a ďŹ lter in front of it that passes red, green or blue light, and the camera’s electronics add up the result to create the image. Filtering dumbs down each panachrome pixel so that it registers only a fraction of the light it’s capable of seeing. In an earthbound camera, some information is lost. Space cameras are designed to measure not just all visible light but also the infrared and ultraviolet light.
