Hand of Fate Gee, I guess you’ve never heard about Learned Hand’s judgement that nobody should have to pay any more than the tax code says (“Search for ‘Greedy Corporation,’” SV411, Dec. 12). Google apparently worked within legal limits to minimize its taxes, something done by plenty of others, including both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. Taxes on corporations are a canard in any case. Corporations treat taxes like
any other cost of business. And guess who ends up paying those costs? Do you imagine it’s anyone other than the company’s customers? At the end of the day, corporations don’t pay taxes, they just collect them. There are really only two parties to this transaction, the tax collectors and the taxpaying citizens. “Taxing corporations” is simply a way to hide the facts and surreptitiously feed the ravenous beast of overweening government. For Shame I have never written a letter to complain about another person ranting about yet another person, but in this case I felt it quite necessary. In your recent I Saw You column (“Can Creep,”
Dec. 12), you printed a rave that I am absolutely appalled that you actually published! This person was referring to someone who stole their aluminum cans. In the end, they referred to this person as a “sorry excuse for a human being, do the world a favor and end your worthless life now.” I find it very offensive that you would do this person the honor of printing this, as it seems to advocate suicide!! What if this person did in fact commit suicide, would this person that had their stupid cans stolen feel any remorse? Have a heart—you have no idea what this other person is dealing with; in the overall scheme of things, just like the ranter said, it’s only $5 or $10! 40 pieces eventually went up for auction, mostly paintings and a few sculptures. Davis’ own works in the auction included several still-life pieces, abstract figurative works and portraits of friends, family and sports stars. Other participating artists included Bruni Sablan, Mark Gray, William Rhodes, Lorraine Lawson and others. I wouldn’t quite say Davis’ painting talent equals his athletic ability, but during college he majored in studio art, and he currently heads the Vernon Davis Foundation for the Arts, an effort to help disadvantaged youth realize their artistic potential via grants and good old-fashioned mentorship. That is, he’s not bankrolling athletic scholarships; he’s helping artists instead. Each year, a scholarship is awarded
to provide tuition support for pursuing a university arts education, with this year’s award going to Niyjale Cummings, originally from East Palo Alto. In the gallery, Cummings’ mixedmedia minisculptures of wire and found materials were on display right next to the other works. The evening was a star-studded affair; seemingly every news crew from the Bay Area was there for the red carpet, while the line for the mere mortals stretched almost all the way to Winchester. Quarterback Alex Smith showed up, along with other teammates, as well as Niners owner Jed York. The room was elbow-to-elbow for the duration. Photographers pointed their cameras and snapped shots every which direction, nonstop. Wearing a rumpled pair of Dockers, I had to audible my way through $1,000 dresses, bespoke masterpieces and wedding rings seemingly as big as golf balls. Cummings eventually took the podium, speaking along with city officials, arts leaders and Davis
himself. He declared that winning the scholarship has given him a new sense of confidence, direction and selfesteem, things he never had before. “I never would have thought Mr. Vernon Davis would be a painter,” said Cummings. “I never would have thought he would like my artwork. I’m nobody from East Palo Alto. Nobody knows who I am. I used to Google myself and nothing would show up.” Continuing, Cummings recalled that, initially, all his friends thought he was crazy for wanting to be an artist. “I come from a family where all my relatives played football,” he said. “When I started doing art, it was a new thing, and I was even doubting myself about doing it. I did it when I was younger, and nobody understood it. I did it in high school; nobody understood it. When I won the scholarship, everyone was like, ‘Whoa, you can actually do something now.’” A As the evening wore on, hardly any anyone crammed into the space see seemed to pay that much attention to the art. One piece, a vase, even went cra crashing to the floor, after someone bum bumped its pedestal. I didn’t ask if it wa intentional grounding. was A in all, everyone appeared sincere All t in their applause for a worthy cause, ack acknowledging that the state of California must do something to get music and arts education back into elementary schools. It was great to hear a bunch of left-brain businessfolk actually applaud such a concept. In that sense, the event was inspiring. Although Santana Row isn’t all that unusual, providing the same upscale shopping one can find in any major city anywhere, Gallery 85 is quite distinctive. One rarely sees a high-profile athlete who is also an artist, let alone someone with the will to financially support creative types. When I grew up, athletes did not do that. Instead, they beat up the creative types. And speaking as someone from a dysfunctional family who was probably saved from potential criminal paths by a lifelong arts and music education, I can only share everyone else’s applause.

fall, my brother and I went on a downtown beer crawl along San Pedro and First streets. We visited four out of the 10 or so beer places that are all located within walking distance from one another.
some big news: there are plans in the works to open a 100 percent craft-beer bar with a few dozen taps next summer in the open space on the other side of the building where Bellano Coffee (a.k.a. B2) has set up shop. The variety and the close proximity of the food vendors in the open market, as well as the outside seating area in the Adobe Peralta Plaza, are undoubtedly great draws for the Market Bar.

We were struck by the considerable knowledge of our server, and she answered all our questions about the current beer menu, which consists of 15 draft beers—and in particular about the various sour ales on tap. A nearby customer with a bright smile let us know that she was a regular and loved Good Karma for its beer selection. Owner Ryan Summers stopped by to ask what beers we were having, and an enthusiastic conversation ensued around our latest and greatest beers tasted. My brother said that he couldn’t wait to return, as he really enjoyed Good Karma’s lively and down-toearth vibe. We agreed that Ryan exudes a contagious positivity. Having had their much-anticipated grand opening celebration in September, business had been holding steady according to Johnny. He confirmed that the folks serving beer at Original Gravity were expected to pass the certified beerserver exam offered by cicerone.org. Rob Monroe, bar manager and event coordinator, shared that his main goal is for customers new to craft beer to take away something positive from their experience.

It may be a few steps removed from the basic idea of a grilled cheese sandwich, but it was juicy and dripping with cheese, on the outside as well as inside. Similarly, the Butch Cassidy ($7.50) features provolone and Russian dry salami on San Francisco sourdough—and was a gooey delight. It is the perfect sandwich for anyone who likes strong-flavored salami. The truck does, of course, offer a more standard grilled cheese sandwich. The Bandit ($4.50) comes with Monterey Jack, Parmesan and American cheese on Texas toast. However, one odd variation is that they do not just grill the outside of the bread but the inside as well, yielding a crispy top layer of cheese. My personal recommendation would be the Sundance Kid, with a caveat—it is a messy affair. For $6.50, and available only at lunch, it is made with Gruyere and mild cheddar, is served on a single slice of sourdough bread and topped with a sunny-side-up egg. Mine had an egg that was cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of runny yolk. Make sure to ask for a fork and lots of napkins. For side dishes, they offer tomato bisque ($3), a tangy, creamy concoction that is packed with lots of basil and large hunks of croutons. Even better are the Mashed Tater Balls ($3), three balls of creamy mashed potatoes that are lightly crispy on the outside. The combination of chives and cheddar cheese gives the potatoes some needed punch. My only complaint about GCB is that everything was priced a little too high. In both cases, the pork is tender, juicy and cut into thin fajita-style hunks. The Pork Diddy sandwich ($5) is prepared Vietnamese-style on a French roll with pickled carrots and daikon. It also comes with cilantro and Porky’s special Woo-Hoo, which tastes like a creamy offshoot of Thai peanut sauce. The rice bowl (Sir Oinks-a-Lot, $7) is served over steamed rice and comes with the same toppings as the sandwich, except with hunks of peanuts instead of cilantro. The tacos (Porky’s Revenge) are only $2 apiece and arrive on corn tortillas with cilantro, onions and Woo-Hoo sauce. For the carb-conscious, they serve lettuce wraps, known as Th-Th-Th-Th-Wrap, for $3 apiece. The wraps feature pickled veggies, peanut chunks, cilantro and, of course, Woo-Hoo sauce. Porky’s offers tater tots a la carte for $1.50, but for $4.50 they come “Piggy Style,” with both types of pork and sauce. The Piggy Style tots were a slight disappointment. The pork and the tots felt like separate items sharing the same plate. The dish could use something extra to bring them together, like another sauce perhaps. Maybe that something extra could have been a fried egg, which Porky’s does offer for $1. The one nonpig menu item is the deceptively titled Suicide Wings, which I assumed would be ridiculously spicy. They weren’t. The wings were actually sweet, tangy and just a little hot. I wasn’t the first person to get the wrong impression from the name. Suicide Chicken, the owner explained, was part of the Angry Birds theme that served as an inspiration for the food truck. They are suicidal because they fling themselves at their enemy, the pigs, just as in the video game. I didn’t make the connection because the birds look like rubber chickens. Specializing as the area’s first vegan pizzeria, Plant Based Pizza will disabuse you of any assumptions you have that vegan cuisine being nothing more than tofu and cardboard. The owner moved his business from Los Angeles—where, he says, vegan food is not all that trendy anymore—to Willow Glen, where the new take on pizza seems to be drawing a line of curious customers. The small restaurant (be aware, Plant Based Pizza has only a handful of tables; try ordering out) offers a wide range of pizzas made completely free of any animal products. With choices ranging from a Vegan Meat Lovers and Hawaiian to Veggie Special or even an Indian-styled pie, pizza lovers can enjoy their favorites, free of guilt. The taste? The crust is crispy, the “cheese” stringy and creamy; even the vegan pepperoni stands in just fine for the real thing. Those looking for a new favorite pizza should sample the Indian version, which features a smoky, cumin-laced tomato sauce contrasted by zesty cilantro with a generous helping of roasted peppers, red onions and tomatoes. The restaurant’s menu also includes pizzeria classics such as calzones and strombolis, made vegan of course. Despite the obvious complexity of Dogcatcher’s music—soul grooves textured with jazz, folk and indie-rock elements—the best way to describe the band is “easy.” In fact, Dogcatcher titled their newest album It’s Easy. This isn’t to say that the music is thoughtless. Rather, it’s intellectual music that encourages listeners to deliberately shed their anxieties and ease into the relaxed grooves and smooth Rhodes organ and just make the decision to feel good. Singer Andrew Heine has a lot to say in each song, but he is
very economical with his words. If you really pay attention, you’ll grasp it all. It’s easy. (AC)

Man or Astroman had the right idea when they made clone versions of their band to go out on tour in their place. Your Heart Breaks takes this thinking to the next level. The band is really a collective of more than 50 people who are spread out all over the country. Combined, they’ve released seven albums on six different labels since their modest beginnings in Bellingham, Wash., in 1999. What they sound like depends on who happens to be in the band at any given show, though they classify themselves as queercore. The music, however, jumps around between variations of indie rock,
folk, punk rock, electronic music and twee-pop. (AC)

His new single “Speechless,” which he will be performing at Studio 8, is an impressive vocal feat. It is, like a lot of his songs, a romantic slow jam. He’s got some up-tempo R&B numbers, too, which can get downright sexual, but even those are still romantic. He’s a skilled singer who has been at it since the early ’90s, when he joined boy R&B trio Immature. Even at 11, he was singing some passionate love songs, with precision and restraint. (AC)

Building a cult following with their early, artsy work, they broke out in a huge way with 2005’s Catch Without Arms. At the time, it may have been easy to say it was their poppier bid for bigger success, but it’s a solid album of some of their best and most enduring songs. They didn’t lose their talent for thoughtful, unusual arrangements, as their next album proved, and after that they reinvented themselves yet again with the help of Dan the Automator. But through it all, there has been an core of integrity and vision to their work that’s kept their fanbase solid as the mainstream’s attention ebbed and flowed. (SP)

Quentin Tarantino uses the ’50s version of the Columbia Lady in his pre-titles, but Ride Lonesome was a mere 73 minutes long, while the unkempt sprawl of Django Unchained exceeds the bounds of the Western movie/
slavesploitationers that Tarantino is raiding—whether low and grimy (like 1971’s Goodbye Uncle Tom) or highbudget and Di Laurentiis–produced (like 1975’s Mandingo). Django Unchained sits solidly in Tarantino’s comfort zone, with a combination of low-key speechifying and big payback. The mania is counterpointed with full-throated emotion. Django Unchained is so caramel-hearted that Tarantino even includes Jim Croce’s atrocious “I Got a Name” to accompany the saddle-pals’ ride. Dr. King Schultz (Christopher Waltz) is a dentist-turned-gunslinger, practicing his trade at the end of the 1850s. In a freezing woods in Texas, he liberates the slave Django (Jamie Foxx), for
the practical reason that the shackled man can lead him to a trio of criminals hiding on a plantation. Django takes to the killing work with ease—“Shootin’ white folks, what’s not to like?” He has a mission of his own. His wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), has been sold down the river by a cruel master (Bruce Dern). She’s languishing on “the fourthbiggest plantation in Mississippi,” a place known as Candyland, operated by the disgusting Calvin J. Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). To infiltrate the place, Django will pose as a free black slaveholder seeking to buy bare-knuckle fighting Mandingos. Tarantino’s least-acknowledged influence, Richard Pryor, might well have loved the riffs (a ride of Klanlike vigilantes ruined by a bungling seamstress) and the dirty fun of the villain’s hangout, the Cleopatra Club. Waltz’s Dr. King (an odd joke, considering what the real MLK thought of violence) delivers speeches that are a handsome apology for the potential
anti-Germanness of Inglourious Basterds. Schultz, practically a one-man Goethe Society, reaches for his culture as often as he reaches for his revolver. Foxx’s heavyweight glare is tempered by Django’s yearning for his wife. Foxx gives a physical but neutral performance; he’s a killing machine so untroubled that he rides a dancing pony. It is, however, Samuel L. Jackson who catalyzes everything Tarantino has to say about slavery. Jackson is the second-highest grossing actor of all time by some measures. Much of what filled his wallet, he earned with “Bad Mother Fucker” parts. Jackson is made for Candyland; as per David Thomson’s phrase about Vincent Price, Jackson has “a sweet tooth”—he likes rich, even decadent parts. The result is easily guessed: Snakes on a Plane quotes when his name is mentioned. Jackson may have had more well-developed roles when he worked for Spike Lee Lemmons. But ask not where or Kasi Le L. Jackson would be without Samuel L Tarantino, ask rather… . It’s one thing to imagine being whipped and branded—some people do that kind of thing for fun—but what Jackson gets at is a lot dirtier, eerier and harder to countenance. He shows us the corrosion of a man who has to pretend to be a pet, wriggling with gratitude, putting on a show of human warpage that only white people grown stupid and lazy from the slaveholder’s life wouldn’t suss out. Jackson demonstrates the rage that everyone loves, with a counterbalance of implosion, as he stumps around pretending to be kindly and dotty. This is the performance of Jackson’s career. If it’s foolery, it’s the kind of fooling that goes on in King Lear.

DEADFALL (R; 95 min.) Disappointing film noir with some advantages, one of them being the fact that there aren’t any other elf-free 90-minute movies this time of year. A plus: Olivia Wilde (of House M.D. and the late Alexander Cockburn’s niece) as one half of a pair of too-close Southern siblings on the lam in the snows of northern Michigan; Wilde has the too-vivid beauty Joan Bennett displayed in her Fritz Lang film noirs. Stefan Ruzowitsky made the dreadful All The Queen’s Men and the flawed but interesting The Counterfeiters. He leads this one out of the gate with punch: a severe car accident leaves Liza (Wilde) suspended upside down inside the car from the safety belt. Her brother, Addison (Eric Bana, suitably tough), is forced to use his gun within the first five minutes, asking for forgiveness when he pulls the trigger. What seems like a sidebar about a crooked, shamed Detroit boxer (Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy) turns out to be the start of parallel plot lines converging at a Thanksgiving table, where Kris Kristofferson and Sissy Spacek are the hosts. The last half-hour falls apart. Addison’s God-haunted desperation and conflicted feelings turn into typical one-dimensional villaining, and the ordinarily deft Spacek and Kristofferson play it like a TV Thanksgiving special in which there’s a sudden home invasion. SCENES FROM the Marriage of an Idiot: This Is 40’s Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) endure the week before her 40th birthday, which she is cravenly describing as her 38th. Their marriage is under pressure because of child rearing, lack of sex and debt. Neither half of the couple has a good example of how to age gracefully from either of their parents—both Pete’s and Debbie’s fathers have remarried and started new families. This symmetry continues in their business lives: Pete is an ex-Sony employee now running a boutique label (old-time power-pop rocker Graham Parker, playing himself, is the low-selling current star). Debbie runs a money-losing clothing boutique with two feuding employees, one slutty (Megan Fox), one wily (Charlyne Yi). This Is 40 is director/writer Judd Apatow’s follow-up to Knocked Up, starring Mann, the real-life Mrs. Apatow, and their two female children as the couple’s kids. The attempt to peel back the comedy seems to reveal all the more sitcom undercurrent, all the more vertigo-inspiring navel (and other orifices) gaze. Aging doesn’t mean wisdom but instead a montage of
ever-more invasive medical procedures: colons plumbed and cavities searched, and Ms. Mann lamenting the decline of her superbly toned body. Apatow gives us, ultimately, more of a wail of self-pity than a laugh. On the bright side, Rudd looks and acts much like This Is 40 the actor playing his father: national treasure R; 134 min. Albert Brooks as Pete’s Opens Friday sponging dad, Larry. Larry’s second marriage was to a younger woman whose clock was going off, the result being three invitro-spawned toddlers: “Go play with your tiny uncles,” Larry tells his young granddaughter—the film’s funniest line. Yi and Melissa McCarthy give this film’s ever-stalling comedic flywheel a spin or two. The occasional hard laughter echoes with hollowness among the movie’s insanely affluent surroundings: This Is 40 (40 minutes too long, that is) is getting at something, but it doesn’t get there by 40 miles—not more than 40 people outside L.A. will understand it. This is not a refinement of the fratpack comedy as much as a tombstone for a subgenre. Richard von Busack

Considering villain, B-movie coincidences and brisk fight scenes, it might have worked—except for the actor who shaped it for his talents. Clad in a vintage, distressed-leather jacket with occasional chest-baring scenes and flaunting obviously dyed hair (maybe it’s time to go gray?), Cruise is in a stretch that’s far exceeds his reach(er). CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY/HIS BUTLER’S SISTER (1944/1943) Based on a Somerset Maugham tale about a New Orleans singer (Deanna Durbin) who can’t get over the louse she married, a thug with an unnaturally close relationship with his mother (Gale Sondergaard). The louse in question: Gene Kelly, showing a brutal streak hinted at in some of his heel parts. Director Robert Siodmak was on the way to make a chain of deathless noirs (The Killers, The File on Thelma Jordan, etc.), and even if he felt Durbin “flinched at looking like a tramp,” according to Siodmak’s biographer Deborah Lazaroff Alpi, Durbin loved the results, and the film was a hit. Durbin could have gone on to be a dark star of noirs. This is a rare, hard-to-find-onDVD treat. BILLED WITH His Butler’s Sister. Frank Borzage directs Durbin in a frothy tale of a girl forced to work for her half-brother as a maid—drawing the attention of both the master of the house (Franchot Tone) and the domestic staff (including Sig Arno and Hans Conried.) IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946) The Stanford Theatres annual screening of the holiday favorite; it sells out, so advance tickets are advised. Frank Capra’s based-on-a-pamphlet fable is animated by James Stewart’s kindliness as self-sacrificing George Bailey, who decides to take his own life when he’s ruined by a chortling banker (Lionel Barrymore). If the film alternates moments of film-noir clarity with more

Reviews (R; 129 min.) Adapter Tom Stoppard does a superior job of whipping the story into just over two hours, keeping as many aphorisms as possible and not neglecting Tolstoy’s compassion for the minor characters. But director Joe Wright (Atonement) stages the tale of ruinous adultery as a postmodern entertainment. This Karenina is ultimately a case of a film that thinks it’s a play. The anti-heroine, Anna, a Russian aristocrat destroyed by adultery, is played by Keira Knightley. Her glacial face—her skin is almost ceramic in its whiteness—is key to the same po-mo approach that stalls the audience identification with her suffering. Knightley can’t break through the thickness of the frame. Jude Law makes a dutiful sympathetic Karenin; he is a dull, understanding saint dressed in clerical robes like a priest. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s vain Vronsky wears some gleaming uniforms but bears an unignorable resemblance to Gene Wilder. (RvB)

The film’s main pleasure lies in watching Anthony Hopkins inhabit the famous silhouette as the Gounod theme plays. The actor is entombed in fat makeup, and only Hopkins’ eyes have much range; he must express stirring fear, vanity and jealousy inside the outward tranquility. He fears losing his wife, Alma (Helen Mirren), to a young upstart (Danny Huston). The film credits the power of the bond between the Hitchcocks in a time of crisis over Psycho, which studio heads and censors alike are claiming can’t be made. (RvB)

Under the advice of the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), he is taking along the fussy and hardly battle-hardened Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) on a quest to find a dwarf kingdom. Except for Cate Blanchett, sauntering in satin as Galadriel, the Lady of Lorien, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a female-free zone. Instead of romance, we get creatures: leprous orcs, gross, ravenous trolls and stone giants. It’s a well-stocked menagerie, but is it anything more? The creatures are bad villains or good heroes here, and the most serious personal conflict is confined to one mere character: the oily, murderous Gollum (voiced by Andy Sirkis, returning). (RvB)

(R; 97 min.) Cold as a mackerel but darkly funny; it brings back the left-wing political disappointment essential to film noir, usually booted out in neo-noir. New Orleans during the election of 2008: a mucky Australian junkie (Ben Mendelsohn) and his buddy, a minor thug (Scoot McNairy), are recruited to rob a high-stakes card game. A Cheneyian lawyer played by Richard Jenkins calls on a fixer (Brad Pitt) to unearth and punish the robbers. Working from a ’70s-era novel by George Higgins (The Friends of Eddie Coyle), director Andrew Dominik manages a smooth blend of ’70s funk and digital estrangement. The film offers the idea of a life of crime being difficult in the easy parts and vice versa—with the real risk in unbearable pressure to snitch, with killings that end in tears, vomit and blood instead of the final graceful “Nothing in his life

(PG-13; 120 min.) Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln is by far the most intelligent of the director/impresario’s history films. He gives us the reliable pleasure of watching a charismatic, covert man who won’t tell us what is dearest to him. The movie portrays Lincoln as an outwardly serene manipulator. You can see the Bismarck in him behind the mask of the weary saint—herding lame-duck congressmen and using his agents to cajole, bribe and threaten. Daniel DayLewis plays Lincoln with sterling wit and nobility. Visible right from the beginning is not just an uncommon man but a very strange one. (RvB)
THE MATCHMAKER (R; 112 min.) A drama set in 1968 about a teenager who goes to work for an elderly matchmaker. In Hebrew with English subtitles.
A ROYAL AFFAIR (R; 129 minutes) It’s not that the king’s insane, really—he just utters slimy snickers like Dan Duryea in a film noir. Christian VII (Mikkel Folsgaard) quips, “I like to drink, I like hookers with big breasts and I like to fight.”This fascinating take on the rottenness in Denmark during the mid-1700s makes it rival Farewell, My Queen as a topdrawer historical romance. We watch an enlightened doctor (played by Mads Mikkelsen) soothe the royal inbred’s temper, even as he gets to know the unfortunate queen (Alicia Vikander) better than the court would like. (RvB)
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (R; 123 min.) The bipolar Pat (Bradley Cooper) returns home after a stint in a mental hospital for threatening his wife. He’s lured back to coping with the help of his pal’s widowed sister-in-law, Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who’s just as full of meds and emotional troubles as he is. Director David O. Russell veers all over the map charting these two troubled love birds, considering them as everything from quirky truth tellers to screaming troublemakers. If you think there’s something adorably romantic about a restraining order, this is for you. Meanwhile the nonmedicatable problems of other people, such as Pat’s sports-fiend/bookmaker dad, played by Robert De Niro, are contrasted with Pat’s own mad tirades—hey, we’re all basically crazy. “They disappointed us on every turn,” Victorino says. “They did absolutely nothing for us. [After we got signed], I went to Rasputin, and I couldn’t find our CD. Before we were signed, it was there, and it was selling well. They dropped the ball in every way possible.” The Limousines’ jump from obscurity to a major label was relatively quick. They were able to get the home recording of their synth-pop song “Very Busy People” aired on LIVE-105 before they had even played a show. Several other stations picked up the song as well. Then, two years ago, the Limousines released the zombie-
music video for their song “Internet Killed the Video Star,” which went viral. They were soon making enough money from the band that they were able to quit their day jobs. Paradoxically, when they signed to Dangerbird and rereleased their debut album, Get Sharp, suddenly they were broke. The band members remained quiet about their frustration while still on the label. Once they left, however, and announced plans to begin their next album, Hush, on their own, funded via Kickstarter, they told their fans everything. For starters, Dangerbird still owned Get Sharp for another 13-1/2 years. As it turned out, their fans were more than eager to help them make Hush a reality. The Limousines’ plan this time was to have complete control of the recording, promoting and distribution of the album—and to retain ownership. By the time the Kickstarter campaign was over,
they had raised $75,808 to get the job done. The main reason they were so frustrated with Dangerbird was that their almost exclusive reason for signing with the label in the first place was to ensure physical distribution of their CDs in foreign markets. “We’ve always been a doit-yourself kind of band, but I think after releasing Get Sharp we were convinced we needed help,” Victorino says. Rather than get their CDs into foreign record stores, Dangerbird took their music off of other country’s iTunes and Amazon websites, with the vague promise of eventually staging a big international release. “To me, that’s such an antiquated way of looking at things—the Internet is worldwide,” Victorino says. “So, if a song’s floating around, and some kid in Japan hears it and likes it and wants a copy and goes to his Japanese iTunes, and it’s not there, he’s going to email a friend and ask for it. People have a twoclick patience before they give up and steal it.” Nothing seemed to go right for the Limousines. A month after signing, Dangerbird fired the staff that the band members had met and liked, changed their distribution company and diluted their resources by signing seven other acts. The worst part of all was that this new staff didn’t even understand what the Limousines were all about. The PR person told Victorino that she had the perfect genre name for them for the purpose of marketing to radio stations and magazines: “Bro-lectric,” because, as she explained, “it’s electronic, and it’s not gay.” “It’s offensive. I’m the least homophobic person in the world. When I hear the word ‘bro-lectric’ I think of DJ Pauly D or Jersey Shore shit,” Victorino says. This PR rep clearly didn’t understand that the Limousines already had a following with alternative-rock crowds who would react in the same way as Victorino to the term “bro-lectric.” Dangerbird’s big move was to try to convince radio stations that had already been playing “Very Busy People” months earlier to

now put it into heavy rotation. When this tactic didn’t yield results, Dangerbird started talking about moving on to the next album. This time, they wanted to be involved in every stage of the project, unlike with Get Sharp. “That’s the worst, when you get people sitting at a desk, and they get an email of a demo and they type, ‘I really think the chorus should be more like this.’ I didn’t want to be involved with that process. I didn’t trust them,” Victorino avers. With Kickstarter, they actually raised $20,000 more than Dangerbird had offered them to record the second album—and there was no question of whether they’d have to make compromises with the fan-funded budget. “I used to think that bands that were already established like Nine Inch Nails or Radiohead are better off without a label. Now I don’t know why anyone would sign to one,” Victorino concludes. Already Hush is coming together well—and is a noticeably different record than Get Sharp. Victorino likes to describe Get Sharp as an album that is “more about masturbating than sex,” whereas Hush will be “more about sex than masturbating.” In other words, Get Sharp is a clever, philosophical, poignant album, but it lacks personal expression. Hush on the other hand will be full of vulnerable songs about love, heartache, sex and loss. “The first Limousines album wasn’t cathartic for me. I think it was a reaction to my previous musical stuff. All the Strata [his old band] songs were written in a way that was very emotions first, intellectual last. The Limousines was experimenting by doing something that none of my friends were doing. Everyone was in a fouror five-piece rock band,” Victorino says. “The same way that album was a reaction to the Strata stuff, this album is a reaction to the last Limos album. It wasn’t emotional, so this one kind of has to be.”

AXd\j 9ifne Ki`Ylk\ ONE WAY to evade the boredom and angst that accompany compulsory holiday social gatherings is to add a little “Cold Sweat” and “Super Bad” to the equation. At the Pagoda Lounge on Friday, D1Me’s “A James Brown Tribute” hopes to get you offa that thing and make you feel better. The Godfather of Soul lives on through the turntables of guest DJ Sake One. While this show may be a little pared down compared to Brown’s typical productions (at the time of the singer’s death, he was using three guitarists, two bass guitar players, two drummers, three horns and a percussionist), it promises to uphold the spirit of the funk legend. Pagoda Lounge “James Brown, in my view, is the single most influential musical artist of the 20th and 21st centuries,” Sake says. “As Friday, Dec. 21; a DJ whose foundation was in hip-hop, the influence and 9pm; free with importance of James Brown is inescapable.” RSVP/$5 Back in late 2006, Sake decided that too many great artists were passing away without being properly honored, and he threw a James Brown Tribute Night at his weekly party, Pacific Standard Time. The event was a hit, but it took on even more significance when Brown passed away two days later on Christmas Day. While Sake spent the next few weeks distraught over the death of his idol, an offer to participate in a JB tribute party in Miami at the annual Winter Music Conference, alongside DJs like J Rocc (Beat Junkies, L.A.), DJ Spinna (New York), and DJ Applejac (Atlanta) lifted him out of his funk. Sake now pays yearly homage to the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer through his tribute shows.

Sake One, a native San Franciscan who uses his moniker from his “nonpublicly sanctioned street art” days, has opened for another soul icon, Mary J. Blige, when she performed “My Life” in its entirety last year. Although he started out playing strictly hip-hop, over the years the DJ has diversified his sets, delving into reggae, dance and salsa. Like his idol James Brown, he seeks to play cutting-edge, original music, while still keeping his finger on the pulse of pop culture. Underneath the Underground THESE DAYS, the underground music scene in Silicon Valley is more of an eclectic mixture of DIY bands than a singular sound. What these groups share is a desire to bring raw, immediate energy in its most basic form to their live performances. The two-day festival Underneath the Underground, which was put together by local promoters Steve Savage and Brandi Turner, seeks to capture this bare-bones essence with a lineup of 14 bands. “It seems like bands now can only do shows with bands they sound the same as,” Savage explains. “So you’ll see a lot of different genres of kids that didn’t normally hang out at the same venues. I want to put them all together in one venue.”

For example, the Champions Inc., a Mountain View– based traditional ska band, plays the first night alongside HeWhoCanNotBeNamed, featuring the guitarist for infamously offensive punk band the Dwarves. The second night includes Avenue Saints, a swinging psychobilly band from Sacramento, and Madtown Mulligan, who mix ’70s oi and old-school garage rock.
“The way I have the lineup is that there are no styles that are back to back,” Savage says. “I’m trying to keep it like the shows I used to go to in the ’80s and ’90s, where different style bands were quite often put on the same bill.” Bands will alternate between Johnny V’s and Paddy’s Pub next door, from 8 to 10pm. After 10pm, bands will perform exclusively at Paddy’s, while a DJ takes over at Johnny V’s.—Aaron Carnes

You point yourself toward happier times by being honest about the relationship you have instead of pretending it’s the relationship you want. This takes accepting that being human means being prone to emotionally driven errors in judgment—in this case, maybe because you are longing for love, are loath to admit to another failed romantic investment and dread being alone. Of course, there’s nothing lonelier than feeling alone while in a relationship with somebody else—especially somebody who claims to love you and then shows it by bringing absolutely nothing to the table but a finely calibrated scale.
