When the plaza opened, in 1999, the powers that be initially dumped millions of dollars into the place with no competent planning, no realistic vision, no adequate plan to maintain the facility and too many cooks in the kitchen.

When I visited a year ago, however, a new effort—the School of Arts and Culture @MHP—had just completed a promising pilot program. Nowadays, the school is raging, and the entire property seems fully activated. Every day, there seems to be something going on. Aztec dancers in full headdress rehearse in the outdoor quad area. Children’s classes take place most days after school. Other local arts and ethnic cultural organizations regularly use the theater, which, by the way, has always been one of the most pristine facilities in the entire South Bay. More on that in a second. So much transpires at the Mexican Heritage Plaza these days, it’s hard to imagine, given the disaster it once was. Much exists to gloat about. The youth classes include

narrative portrait, comics and graphic novels, samba drumming, opera cultura, classical guitar and hip-hop. Huge displays unfold every holiday. Financial support comes in from various corporations and community foundations. There are connections to local businesses and churches, a Multicultural Arts Leadership Initiative and a serious entrepreneurial strategy to make the place viable in the long term. I remember when the plaza first opened, especially the theater. It was state-of-the-art, with a zillion-dollar 32-channel soundboard from Crest Audio. In fact, there were audio I/O all around the top perimeter of the house, just off the catwalks, enabling a wide variety of speaker arrangements and plenty of different ways to sonically configure the room. There were so many options available for any front-of-house mix, it was insane. Hell, if you wanted to spin two channels of 90-decibel audio around a 12-speaker diffusion system, you could do that. It really seemed like someone had been given a blank check for the JBL speaker

inventory—complete overkill for most gigs that would possibly use the space—but it was probably a sound engineer’s dream having all that equipment at his or her disposal, like giving an unruly teenager keys to an explosives factory. Alas, the powers that be understood none of this, so they never adequately staffed the place and didn’t give the theater director any other employees. All that money went into the facility, yet no one at the top had any knowledge to plan for its staffing or maintenance. Sound familiar? Of course it does. Nowadays, I honestly believe things are on the upswing. Many different arts organizations seem to be collaborating with each other at the plaza more than they used to. If one just walks in at the right moment, the grounds no longer seem deserted. People mill about on a regular basis. Peo planning parlance, I think they call In p this “activating a space,” but again, I prefer to say the half-dead junkie on pre the corner of Alum Rock and King has been given an IV drip and now returns to life again. retu Even the dive bar across the street E has been painted on the outside, leading me to believe that maybe lead the plaza’s reactivation will kick-start some beautification projects in the hood. We can only hope. Even better, Gandhi shows up this weekend. The Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose will present its annual fall production in the Mexican Heritage Plaza Theater. Artistic Director Mythili Kumar explains that the show will be a tribute to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, reiterating his message of civil disobedience as an alternative to violent resistance. “The first piece goes back to Gandhi getting his inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita,” she explains. “Following that, we come to Gandhi’s life. ... The whole presentation includes the memoriam, his grandniece Manubehn narrating— and we go through his entire life.”

The program grew out of a collaboration between the International Culinary Center and Karp Resources. Dorothy Hamilton, founder and CEO of the center, pushed for a curriculum that focuses on the main issues the culinary world is facing today, including sustainability, quality and organics. “We need to get beyond the four walls of the kitchen and explore the bigger issues,” McCann says of Hamilton’s idea. “And these issues don’t just include flavor and variety and what’s out there in the world in terms of product, but also sustainability. We need to focus on what we can do and what we should be doing as chefs to act responsibly in terms of feeding the United States and feeding the world in general.” Karen Karp, a leader in the “good food” movement and president of Karp Resources, designed the course to reflect the growing importance of these issues in the culinary industry. Students will travel to innovative and sustainable farms and institutions. These trips include working with the Monterey Bay Aquarium—to learn about aquaculture and sustainable fishing—and visiting a 7,600-acre grasslandsrestoration project and ranch in San Benito County. Ultimately, the goal of the course is to produce chefs who have an extensive knowledge of the pastures, vineyards and waters from which the ingredients they work with come. “From our perspective, we view ourselves not just as a culinary school but as a culinary center,” McCann says. “The object of the program is to start the process so that the chefs going out into restaurants are knowledgeable about [such] important issues as sustainability, quality and organics.” (For more information, see www. internationalculinarycenter.com.)—Eliza Lamson

The special formula was based on a sauce used at Linda’s Drive-In Restaurant, a diner in Mountain View in the 1950s. The Gold Rush Burger, Frontier Burger and root beer float are all popular choices. Tater Tots are served as an alternative to fries. The truck parks all around San Jose, often near other food trucks, so customers have plenty of options. Recent locations include San Jose State (Ninth and San Fernando streets), eBay (Bascom and Hamilton avenues), Santa Clara University (The Alameda and Market Street) and near the Winchester Mystery House. Zankich says thathis truck is available to rent for group events or fundraisers, and that he will donate part of the profits back to the cause. He has also said that when he gets 500 “likes” on his Facebook or Twitter page, he will randomly award a $50 gift card to a customer. Most meals cost between $5 and $10 and should “quench the hunger of even the most voracious of appetites,” according to Gold Rush’s Facebook page. Zankich says that the truck has been a lot of fun but also a lot of work. One of the biggest struggles has been finding workers who are able to drive the large-wheeled restaurant. Zankich doesn’t want just anyone to drive it, because “it might not look like a Porsche, but it costs about the same amount.”—Liz Wassmann

“The school had second thoughts about letting me showcase it—they thought it was too ‘out there,’” says Velasquez, now 25, a career clothier and purveyor of that same tongue-in-cheek irreverence that earned her the dean’s disapproval a couple years back. “I’m not trying to offend anyone. My brand just reflects my sense of humor. If it’s on one of my shirts, I, for some reason, thought it was clever or funny.” The year-old brand’s alt-goth-raverhipster aesthetic mash-up stems from Velasquez’s real-life “Catholic school girl gone bad” narrative; its existence as a commercial clothing brand comes from her parents’ and fiance/urban streetwear designer Ryan Mante’s business investments. Mante owns the San Jose–based clothing brand Booger Kids and co-owns Breezy Excursions. Though he helps Velasquez sketch up some of the designs, Petals is still patently hers. “By making this into something that

I really like, personally, I hope it appeals to a lot of other people,” she says. “This be a li line th thatt sells iisn’t ’t meantt tto b ll a whole look. It’s more about you taking a piece and making it your own.” Petals and Peacocks doesn’t really market its logo; it’s a unisex clothing brand thanks to the loose-fitting tops it sells and it exudes an antiestablishment sarcasm palatable to the 18-to-25 crowd. That I’ll-do-it-myself mentality jibes with bloggers and the anti-fashion fashionistas that populate Tumblr or shop on sites like DollsKill.com, which, unsurprisingly, sells Petals pieces. A bestseller since the Petals launch in summer 2011 was a top that came in either a cropped tee or sweatshirt cut with a broad brush-stroked Chanel logo over the equally broad-brushed font spelling “fake.” “People loved that one for some reason,” Velasquez recalls. “I think it works because it was recognizable with the logo, but still cheeky and rebellious … anti-high fashion.” The Bay Area online goth-punk clothing store Dolls Kill carries the Petals brand for just that reason: it appeals to the unfamous-yet-influential alt-fashion crowd. It carries a sensibility cultivated from Velasquez’s school-aged

raver days, when her parents would chastise her for staying out too late and hanging with the wrong crowd—back when they exhorted her to pursue pharmacy school and quit wasting time obsessing about fashion. Velasquez, incidentally, completed pharmacy school and turned down an offer to work at the Stanford Medical Center to enroll in art school. Her parents now encourage her business endeavor, even though the brand’s message isn’t exactly family friendly. “Everything I make comes from either a memory or idea of growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, the pop culture, the druggy culture, the cartoons,” explains Velasquez, who ironically favors wearing more subdued black and shapeless threads than the ones she makes. In fact, for someone whose sartorial creations include shirts with the screen-printed imper imperative to “fuck shit up,” Velasquez is ssurprisingly mild-mannered and iintensely private. It’s a far cry from the San Jose–bornand-bred reputation p peddled by her fiance’s family of bran brands, whose Breezy Excursion motto excl exclaims, “Fuck the rest, we the best.” Conversely, Velasqu Velasquez avoids pegging herself or her company as San Jose’s own. There’s no storefront, the showroom’s in Los A Angeles and the clothes are sold online. The brand’s Facebook fan page remains free from any photos of her even though she’s gorgeous enough to model. “I don’t want to influence anyone’s perception of the brand,” says Velasquez, a raven-haired, tawny-skinned Filipina with a penchant for little-to-no-makeup save the occasional red lipstick. “I want it to speak for itself.” It does, evidently: and in the year since its launch, Petals has started to garner a following of social media-savvy fans to speak for it. Velasquez hopes there’s enough buzz to launch her first cut-and-sewn collection next year on a strong point. “Even though this brand is still a baby, it’s been rocking out mad ’n bold graphic collections from the start,” reads a description on Dolls Kills, which counts Petals among their “new favorite sweater designers … too loud to be ignored, too fun to take too seriously.”

THANKS to the famous Frank Capra film and endless revivals, most people are familiar with the plot of the Kaufman/Hart Pulitzer Prize–winning comedy You Can’t Take It With You, now running at Palo Alto Players. But just in case—this 1930s screwball play captures a day in the life of the Sycamores, a family of eccentrics. The story opens to the bustling activity in a house adorned with creepy portraits and collected oddities. The eldest daughter, Essie (Kim Saunders), dances around, making candies with her passive, doting husband, while explosions erupt from the basement, where the awkward father toils away on fireworks experiments. The grandfather (Tom Caldecott) meanders around admiring his pet snake. The mother, Penny (Debi Durst), sits quietly in the middle of this chaos, typing away at another unfinished play—and madder than the rest. Soon, the younger daughter, Alice (Lorie Goulart), appears, and it’s obvious that she is the only one with a grasp of the outside world. Inevitably, she falls in love with Tony (Adam Cotugno), the son of her wealthy boss —and that leads, equally inevitably, to the clash of their two very different families during a disastrous dinner party.

The play, which premiered in 1936, is essentially a wind-up toy. Once the mechanism is started, it spins down to its predetermined conclusion. The relentless predictability is part of the play’s appeal. The key to any production is to keep things moving and not gum up the works. You Can’t Take It With You also can’t help bring with it the context of is time. Palo Alto Players has chosen an interesting strategy of straddling the line between adhering to the original and satirizing the differences between then and now. That tack adds to the fun, because much of the conversation fits perfectly into modern political and cultural discussions. The cast members hold their own in both the fast-paced, witty dialogue and their respective wackiness. As the grandfather, Caldecott plays true slapstick well, and John Watson as the mad scientist father is sincere in his absent-minded disposition. But the outstanding performance is by Brandon Silberstein as Mr. Kolenkhov, who is hilarious as a strongly opinionated Russian dance teacher. Overall, the acting is pretty broad, but nobody expects subtlety in a screwball comedy. Any performance of a hugely successful play is going to be hit or miss. And when a story is so well known it can come off as mere imitation. But Palo Alto Players, which last performed the play in 1943, brings a refreshing approach to You Can’t Take It With You. The original is honored, yet the cast still has room to fully explore the characters.—Tad Malone

They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get along at ďŹ rst, but by the tear-jerking ďŹ nale, they have developed a special bond. Noâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a thinly veiled version of the David Petraeus scandal. The current Tabard Theatre production of Trying is very much like Driving Miss Daisy, set in an office instead of a car. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sentimental, but forgivably so, and for all its familiarity, it offers a unique perspective; that of the playwrightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own Trying experience as a secretary to Francis Biddle, U.S. Attorney General during World War II and the Runs through Nov. 18: principal American judge at the Nuremberg Trials. $10â&#x20AC;&#x201C;$35 Theatre on San Pedro Trying deals with Biddle at the end of his life. By Square, San Jose 1967, this formerly illustrious ďŹ gure has become a cantankerous old fossil, bewildered by new technology and women burning their â&#x20AC;&#x153;upper underwear,â&#x20AC;? and making little progress on his memoirs and other projects he wishes to complete before he dies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am in the process of leaving this life,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The exit sign is ďŹ&#x201A;ashing over the door, and the door is ajar.â&#x20AC;? He believes that at his age, everything should go exactly the way he wants it to, and has ostensibly ďŹ red all his previous secretaries after being disappointed by them in some way. Biddleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest secretary is Sarah, a â&#x20AC;&#x153;prairie populistâ&#x20AC;? from Saskatoon who immediately clashes with his Eastern patrician sensibilities. Despite its difficulties, the job gives Sarah a reprieve from her troubled marriage, and she manages to remind Biddle of who he once was: a democratic crusader who fought for workers and opposed Japanese-American internment. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a story that offers few surprises. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no doubt that Sarah will prove different from all the other secretaries, or that the Biddle will be unmasked as a grandfatherly gentleman. Nevertheless, the play deserves credit for dealing seriously with themes of youth and old age, death and new life, hope and regretâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;not to mention the problem of relating to someone of a different age, class or genderâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all while retaining a warm sense of humor. This is the kind of material that shines in the hands of competent actors. Alexandra Bogoradâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s endearingly chipper Sarah and Kurt Gravenhorstâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s poignant Biddle, the picture of a formidable mind ground under the onset of senility, together make a performance that is likely to move the most cynical viewers.â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Sean Conwell

This otherwise first-rate film doesn’t quite clarify the circumstances. It doesn’t fully explain that the Emancipation Proclamation might have been considered a wartime emergency measure, and that it could have been struck down after the Civil

War ended. Tony Kushner’s wily script counters Spielberg’s instinct to Capra-ize this history. Being Spielberg, he does, though, a bit. The scenes of Lincoln’s legal victory, with Congress throwing papers in the air and singing “The Battle Cry of Freedom” look oversized. The meeting of Lincoln and Grant (a well-cast Jared Harris) at Appomattox is pitched for maximum sentiment. In Lincoln, however, we have the reliable movie pleasure of watching a charismatic, covert man who won’t tell us what is dearest to him. The movie portrays Lincoln as an outwardly serene manipulator. You can see the Bismarck in him behind the mask of the weary saint— herding lame-duck congressmen and using his agents to cajole, bribe and threaten.

Daniel Day-Lewis plays Lincoln with sterling wit and nobility. Visible right from the beginning is not just an uncommon man but a very strange one—and certainly an unhappy one. What makes such a man tell jokes? Cornered, Lincoln relies on anecdote. In one scene, a backwoods office seeker and his wife are both dumbstruck by Lincoln’s pointless way-homer story about a dead parrot. Lincoln observes the tension between a man haunted by four years of carnage, sleepless and grieving, and Sally Field as his proud, unbalanced wife. She’s as weird as he is, really. Mary serves as a sounding board and dream interpreter (she calls herself “a soothsayer”). The film commences with a blackand-white dream sequence with Lincoln aboard a black ship rushing at great speed to an unknown shore, almost as if it were a jet plane. This image of Lincoln on the deck starts the movie on the right foot. The sequence directly faces the gulf of time that makes it so hard for

people of today to understand the most remarkable man this nation ever produced. Lincoln is talky but surprising. It traffics in moments one didn’t know about, such as the irony of where Lincoln’s son Tad (Gulliver McGrath) was when he heard the news about his father. The brisk way Mary Todd’s companion Elizabeth Keckley (Gloria Reuben), a former slave, describes to Lincoln’s son how she was beaten is nicely matter-of-fact—someone shutting a door, politely but firmly. Tad pores over glass-backed pictures of savaged slaves just as Spielberg must have gazed at photos of Holocaust atrocities when he was a child. The costumes give the actors a chance to be mountebanks. All the high hats, the gold vests, the frock coats and the string ties suggest the look of confidence men, and most of them are, essentially. Hal Holbrook lives large as the vast and elderly kingmaker Preston Blair. Holbrook, however, is eclipsed by Tommy Lee Jones’ soon-to-be Oscarwinning turn as Thaddeus Stephens. The performance involves an askew wig and a dog-headed cane ( Jones keeps mulling over the carved head, like a jester gazing sadly at his coxcomb). He has grounds for biliousness—he is a radical courted by the milksop mainstreamers, ultimately made to take one for the team. Lincoln is so bewilderingly good that it makes up for the crowdpleasing banal points, like the twinkle in Lincoln’s eye when explaining to Keckley that in the future, ex-slaves and the freeborn “will get used to one another.” Left alone is whether Lincoln’s ambition—“a little engine that knew no rest,” as his law partner put it—seized on the issue of slavery, or whether he was truly disgusted beyond measure with it. For myself, I’m satisfied with Edmund Wilson’s idea: in the end, it’s immaterial what Lincoln thought, since he lost his life in the cause. With such proof, who needs rhetoric?

SKYFALL (PG-13; 142 min.) 007 (Daniel Craig) recuperates from a rifle wound and follows a trail of clues leading to a hacker called Silva (Javier Bardem). Starting with a wounded hero, Sam Mendes gives up more backstory than a lot of James Bond fans would want. The photography (by Roger Deakins) is a landmark for digital film; there are stunning sequences in Istanbul, a Chinese red-dyed Macao and Shanghai. And the virility of Daniel Craig reaches Clark Gable levels; it seems no one will ever look less ducky in a suit. Too bad the film is undervillained. Sure Bond can save England. But just England? Howler CLEARLY, The Mummy’s Hand (1940) is a gift for those who love San Jose’s Rosicrucian Museum. The film is cast with non-Egyptians, including stalwart but shifty Brit George Zucco, Hamburg’s Sig Arno (as a piaster-grubbing beggar) and Italian physician turned actor Eduardo Ciannelli, immortal as the turbaned and dhotied leader of the Thuggee cult in Gunga Din: “Rise and kill! Kill for the love of Kali!” Something of a sequel to the famous Karloff film—but mostly not—The Mummy’s Hand (which shows Nov. 14–16 at the Stanford Theatre with The Wolf Man) is a comedy with horror relief. Zucco plays a debonair professor of Egyptology in Cairo. His secret: he has been appointed to fulfill the ancient task of protecting a mummy’s tomb. Says Ciannelli’s high priest, dying while passing the torch: “I fear I shall never see the moon rise behind the Valley of the Jackals again.” The new priest, Andoheb, must reanimate the mummy Kharis (rhymes with “Clarice”) and bring him around to deal with the interlopers.

Interlopers abound: breezy archaeologist Steve Banning (Dick Foran), known for his work “digging up the Inca ruins in Mexico,” and his chubby pal Babe (Wallace Ford). Babe has had enough: “We ain’t dug up a soup bone yet ... nyaah,

I might as well have stayed in Brooklyn.” They team up with a likable magician (Cecil Kellaway) and his pretty daughter (Peggy Moran) and head out to do some excavation, as the full moon rises, and the jackals howl like wolves. There have been more frightening The Mummy’s Hand creatures than Kharis (Tom Tyler). The Wolf Man As cartoonist Lynda Nov 14–16 Barry once noted, Stanford Theatre, the Mummy was so Palo Alto slow you could run around behind him and kick him in the butt. But it’s not his fault he’s pokey; the evil Andoheb rations his revivifying tana leaves and thus turns him into a shuffler. Kharis sometimes looks disturbing (eyes rolling and glittering under the rotten bandages), but ultimately the film elicits respect for Zucco as an actor who decided he’d rather not let the world know he was in on the joke. The belief is beaconlike from Zucco’s clean, sinister, too-handsome visage—no wonder Kenneth Anger made up the lie that the actor died insane, terrorized to madness by his fear of dread Cthulhu. Zucco’s last line appeals straight to the audience, even as he appeals to mighty Isis herself. Richard von Busack

(Brick, The Brothers Bloom) takes a comfortable turn into Stephen King territory; certainly, the dreadful way the future mob induces fugitives to return is as good as any idea King ever came up with. On the down side, GordonLevitt’s make-up (which is supposed to make him resemble Willis) is odd, and the film could have used more humor, although Jeff Daniels as a lazy mafia middle-manager who already knows his future is exceptionally funny. Also a standout: Emily Blunt, who has one of her strongest roles ever as the farmer who gives Joe shelter. (RvB)

and released several popular singles, including “Can’t Stand My Baby,” “Flying Saucer Attack” and “Top of the Pops.” After core members Eugene Reynolds and Fay Fife reformed the group 10 years ago, they played just a few U.S. dates, but the band’s current tour, which comes to the Blank Club (with the Phenomenauts and Jonny Manek & the Depressives) on Friday, includes many more stops than on previous trips through the United States. “We’ve got people who knew us the first time around, the second time around and now the third time around—we see a nice cross-section of people,” says Reynolds over the phone from New Jersey. When the Rezillos first came to the United States in the 1970s, they had just signed with American label Sire Records and were planning to record their debut album here—the only

U.K.-based punk band of the era to do so. “We came over as young, fresh-faced, naïve things and walked into New York City, which was pretty much what we pictured the United States to be in our fantasies,” Reynolds says. “We spent about six weeks recording the album, because we recorded it in down time. Bigger acts were using the studio during the day. We’d have to come in the small hours of the morning and spend two hours here, three hours there, and piece the album together like that.” Many of the songs that are now fan favorites were included on the album. Reynolds says the band was fortunate enough to work with producers and engineers who were veterans of the music industry to help create the tracks. “That was Tony Bongiovi. He worked with Shadow Morton on the Shangri-Las’ sessions, which was of course great for Fay, because she just loved all those ’60s girl bands from the States,” Reynolds says. “We used the exact same technique and microphones from the ’60s; we felt very honored.” Since reforming, the Rezillos have released a couple of new singles in recent years, available as downloads

In the meantime, he is looking forward to connecting with fans new and old on the road, and reflecting on the fact that the Rezillos were recently given the “Legend” award at the Tartan Clef Awards in their native Scotland. “Of course, in a way, that’s sort of ‘anti-punk,’ isn’t it?” laughs Reynolds. “But that’s so often the case; things come along and shake up the establishment, and then somehow it becomes OK, and you’re part of the culture, whether they like it or not.”

Contra Ville PEOPLE LIKE to throw the word â&#x20AC;&#x153;eclecticâ&#x20AC;? around to describe many a band, but in the case of locals Contra Ville, I can think of no better word. Apparently, neither can they. Their new album, to be released at their show on Nov. 17 at SLG Art Boutiki, is called Electric Eclectic, which pretty much says it all. Contra Ville won the award for best jazz band at Metroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent SVSX awards, and jazz is deďŹ nitely a major component of their sound, but so are indie rock, hip-hop, blues and world beat. The bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earlier recordings tended to pull more from jazz fusion (in the Art Boutiki vein of Weather Report and Return to Forever), but Electric Eclectic also takes a lot of inspiration from early Saturday, Nov 17, swing jazzâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;evident on opening track â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bombastic Child,â&#x20AC;? 7pm; $10 the heavier â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beforeâ&#x20AC;? and the toe-tapping â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oh, Honey.â&#x20AC;? But these arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t strictly swing songs; they are as stylistically mixed as anything Contra Ville has ever released.
