So this was just making everybody well again and restoring everybody to the status quo, which I think was a major mistake, because it produced precisely the result we’re talking about now.

The plainest example is Mitt Romney. If you look at his tax returns, he paid rates of 14, 13 percent. That’s totally normal in this world if you work in a private equity fund. He’s not

an exception, he’s an embodiment.

In the financial services industry, the very, very rich mostly receive income as capital gains or, if they’re private equity people, as carried interest. In both cases, the max rate is 15 percent.

transformed the course of 20thcentury spirituality: author (Brave New World) and LSD enthusiast Aldous Huxley (1894–1963), the mystic philosopher Gerald Heard (1889–1971) and Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson (1895–1971). While researching the book, Lattin discovered more about his own personal story, especially his own struggles with substance abuse, so the book ultimately took the form of a memoir.

Distilled Spirits: Getting High, Then Sober, With a Famous Writer, a Forgotten Philosopher, and a Hopeless Drunk ($29.95; UC-Press) weaves Lattin’s personal story of recovery with the lives of Huxley, Heard and Wilson in a way that should inspire anyone. It is neither a stock drunk-to-sober story nor a preachy treatise.

As someone who wrote for the

secular press for decades, surrounded surround by legendaryy San Francisco Chronic Chronicle alcoholics and the skid-row bars within crawling distance of the newspaper offices, Lattin learned to escape his inbred cynicism and addictions with the help of three characters from his grandparents’ generation.

“Each of these men independently led an inspiring life,” writes Lattin.

“But it’s only when we consider the three collectively, pausing at these moments where their lives intersect, that we fully appreciate their cumulative power. Huxley saw the social problem. Heard charted the spiritual course. Wilson recruited passengers for the journey.”

Most readers are probably familiar with Huxley and Wilson, but Heard is something of a forgotten character, hence the book’s title. Among many other identities, Heard was the first science correspondent for the BBC, wrote one of the first popular books on flying saucers and pioneered gay spirituality. He was an historian, a mystery novelist and an influence on many flavors of the human-potential

movement. Heard was also the one who guided Bill Wilson during the latter’s first LSD trip in the summer of 1956. The two continued a lifelong correspondence.

Among still more endeavors, Heard opened Trabuco College in the ’40s, in the Southern California canyon of the same name, where Eastern philosophy met its Western counterpart, and where inquiries into comparative spirituality were the norm. The campus is now used by the Vedanta Society.

All in all, Lattin says Heard and Huxley were probably two of Western culture’s last great polymaths: “In an era of increasing specialization, they were interested in everything.” Religious studies scholar Huston Smith and Esalen Institute co-founder Michael Murphy are two people who continue to cite Heard as a major influence.

Lattin’s own story involves a deeper descent into alcohol and drugs while treating his editors like shit and insulting them in front of the younger staff writers. Now sober more than eight years, he says writing Distilled Spirits was part of his ongoing recovery, reinforcing a program of rigorous honesty and teaching him the redemptive power of storytelling.

Distilled Spirits even features lurid yarns about the various reporters Lattin worked with, some nearly dead from drink but still attached to bar stools. Lattin doesn’t lionize or criticize the scenario; rather, he puts it in context, looking back on a long career writing about religion from a jaded reporter’s perspective.

“Newspaper reporters revel in writing about religious hypocrisy, and God knows that’s never hard to find,” says Lattin. “But after nearly three decades, I had to turn in my press pass. Skepticism is an honorable trait, especially for journalists, but I’d spent enough time hanging out in that dim alley where cynicism meets skepticism, looking for a little light.”

As one who occupies that same alley, I can relate. In more ways than one.

Kona Ice’s San Jose franchise was started in 2007 by former San Jose State University graduate Young Huh—that’s why you inevitably see a Kona truck at Spartan football home games. Huh says he always wanted to go into business on his own; after hearing about the lucrative shaved-ice business from a friend, he jumped at the opportunity to join Kona. Since then, Huh and his truck have been fixtures at local schools, fairs, corporations and sports events.

All of that local networking is important, but the real appeal is in the product. The key, Huh says, is in the ice, which, unlike the choppy shaved ice found at most shops and soda fountains, is soft and soaks up a lot of syrup rather than letting it settle on the bottom of the cup.

Kona Ice offers more than 30 dairy- and gluten-free custom flavors of tropical shaved ice, range from the standards (cherry, blueberry) to the wacky (tiger’s blood, wedding cake).

Even the trucks, once you look past the funky decorations, are state-of-the-art. For large events, they can be fitted with “Flavorware” systems that let customers mix drinks from 10 of the more popular flavors. And when electrical outlets are unavailable, each truck has an internal generator to run the machinery and freezers.

For Young Huh, parked at his alma mater, whipping up shaved ices as quickly as he can make them for cheering, half-drunk football fans, it’s all about the fun. He’s the old-fashioned ice cream truck man, updated to the 21st century. “I love this job,” he says as he stands proudly next to his truck. “I make all types of people happy.”

Our server, who was new, was friendly and attentive as she tended to the customers at the bar, the indoor dining area and the outdoor beer garden. The outdoor beer garden is one of TL’s best features, certainly where we would’ve chosen to sit on that sunny day if not for the Big Game being televised indoors on one of the 10 TVs. The food menu features quite the selection of burgers, including numerous lamb burgers as well as other Mediterranean-type items. This influence stems from owner Emrah Gures, who also owns Taverna Bistro restaurant and hookah lounge in downtown Sunnyvale specializing in Mediterranean cuisine.

TL Beer Garden was previously the Taverna Lounge, which explains the TL, and it used to be more of a hookah lounge until Emra decided to do a revamp and shift the emphasis toward the bar and grill aspects, though hookah is still available. And, of course, there is the new beer focus. Bartender Lizzie passed on the following from Emra: “The market for craft beers is growing fast, thus we chose to steer ourselves in that direction,” and “the customers absolutely love our selection of beer.”

Indeed, there were several beers among the 14 taps that I wanted to try, so I went for the six-beer sampler for $13. Recent examples of the variety of draft beer at TL include Rogue Ales Dead Guy Ale and Double Dead Guy Ale, Köstritzer Schwarzbier, Licher Hefeweizen, Bear Republic Brewing Red Rocket Ale, Mad River Brewing Jamaica Red Ale, Triple Voodoo Brewing Inception Belgian Style Ale, Grand Teton Brewing Sweetgrass American Pale Ale, Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, Bear Republic Racer X Double IPA, Mad River Brewing Steelhead Double IPA and Rogue Ales Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout. Current pricing is $5.50 for a half liter and $11 for a liter.

The last number should be especially compelling, because the young British composer often calls on the Calder String Quartet to try out his new works. (MSG)

The Explosive Fans of the locally produced program can now safely immerse themselves into that scientific Exhibition fray at “Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition,” a new interactive show at the Tech Museum that Runs through Jan. 6; offers visitors the chance to try several hands-on $12–$22 experiments, watch live demonstrations, see props The Tech Museum, from the show and more. “We worked with the San Jose development team to make it as ‘Mythbuster-y’ as possible, minus the danger and jagged edges that are generally in our shop,” says show co-host and Bay Area resident Kari Byron. “It was crazy; when I first walked in. I was shocked at how much they captured our shop and the Mythbuster feel, down to the smallest details.”

Would-be scientists can study up in “The Blueprint Room,” hunker down in “The Workshop” and then find out if their hypotheses are confirmed or busted—and they won’t need paramedics standing by. One particularly popular experiment from the program, called “Running in the Rain,” has been re-created; participants can test if they get wetter running or walking through simulated rain. Byron says this is one of her favorite parts of the exhibit. “They have created a way to bring this indoors with these two tunnels that you go down, you run down one side and walk down the other, and then go stand in front of a mirror to see the iridescent paint that’s in the water to see how much rain hit you,” she says. “You can deduce for yourself whether it’s better to walk or run. They are recording all of the data, so that we can get a huge sample size from the experiment, and we might even find out that our results are busted from the show.”

The exhibit emphasizes visitor participation, encouraging both children and adults to engage with science, which is exactly what the people behind the show were hoping for. “My favorite part of the exhibit is watching the mom or dad walking through with the kid, and they are both having just as much fun,” Byron says. “This is the perfect thing for us; this is exactly what we love as part of the show—science being something that you get your hands dirty with.”—Sean McCourt

I detect some attitude here, Scott, so tell me which is better: a woman operating at 40 percent effectiveness while talking on the phone, or her male counterparts making zero percent progress while rehashing last night’s game?

It’s not just women who think they excel at multitasking. A lot of men agree—for example, me, based on close observation of Ms. Adams. While I’m doggedly drilling into the history of twoby-fours or some other crucial subject, she’s doing laundry and reorganizing a client’s finance department.

Is she good at this? Yes. Is she innately good at it? That’s not so clear. Hoping to get to the bottom of this, we turn as usual to science and find the usual jumble of conflicting data. Let’s see if with a little manly singleness of purpose we can get things sorted out: 1. No one disputes that men and women have cognitive differences. Tests show that, generally, men have superior spatial orientation skills, while women are better at “object-location memory,” that is, remembering landmarks. A leading explanation for this in the academic journals is that in primitive times male hunters needed to be able to find their way on long trips in search of game, while female foragers needed to be able to recall good spots to gather food.

2. The popular assumption is that women are inherently better at multitasking than men, and the huntersvs.-foragers theory has been customized accordingly—here, the claim is that males had to focus single-mindedly on bagging their quarry, while females did their foraging while simultaneously minding the kids and watching out for threats.

However, there’s little research to back this up, and what there is frankly sucks.

3. What we do know is that women multitask much more often than men. A study of 500 mostly affluent two-income families found that both parents spent a lot of time multitasking, but the women multitasked more, 48 hours per week vs. 39 for the men. Unsurprisingly, the women’s multitasking mostly involved housework and childcare.

4. A distinction must be drawn between alternating between tasks, or task switching, and performing two tasks simultaneously, which I’ll call simultasking. A sizable body of research suggests that trying to perform two intellectually demanding chores at the same time is a sure way to do one or both of them poorly, the prime example being talking on your phone while driving a car.

5. A lot of the cognitive research on sex differences in multitasking, unfortunately, has fixated on simultasking. The results have been all over the place—some showing that men do better, some women, some neither. Few of the studies I’ve seen compare the results of simultasking against a control group of unitaskers, that is, people doing just one thing. My guess is that, for intellectually demanding work, unitaskers do way better than simultaskers of either sex.

6. Research and common sense suggest that the only way to do two tasks competently at the same time is to make sure at least one of them requires minimal brainpower—for example, folding laundry while on the phone.

A reasonable surmise is that women’s reputation as superior multitaskers stems partly from the fact that they’re disproportionately burdened with mindless household chores that can readily be done simultaneously.

7. As for task switching, one recent study (Buser and Peter, 2011) compared the performance of men and women alternating between two relatively demanding tasks, namely solving sudoku and word-search puzzles. The researchers found no significant difference between the two sexes.

Putting all this together, we formulate the following two-part hypothesis. First, women multitask more not because they’re naturally better at it but because the need to juggle work and family compels them to. Second, the myth of an innate female gift for multitasking serves two socially useful purposes. It enables women to rationalize having gotten stuck with the scutwork, while for you it’s an excuse to avoid helping out.

In spite of its touchy subject, K_\ J\jj`fej turns out to be a different kind of sex comedy

HE SURPRISE about The Sessions is that despite the seemingly dire subject matter, the film is mostly a comedy.

Berkeley writer Mark O’Brien (subject of Jessica Yu’s 1996 Oscar-winning documentary, Breathing Lessons) was confined to an iron lung because of childhood polio; he earned an English degree at UC-Berkeley and managed to write prose and poetry with a stick held in his mouth. Set in the late 1980s, the script is based on an article O’Brien did for

the North Carolina literary magazine The Sun about his experience losing his virginity late in his 30s to a sex therapist.

Helen Hunt has the role of Cheryl, the unglam healer—she drives a Country Squire station wagon. Hunt’s aquiline face is seasoned but not carved into a doll’s grimace by plastic surgery like far too many of her contemporaries. It’s essential to her aura of authority.

One respects her as an actress because she’s not a smiler.

Director/writer Ben Lewin, who has been working for a couple of decades without causing a big splash, has a taste for strong faces.

Mark’s regular helper, Vera (Moon Bloodgood), is an Asian woman with a tightly braided pony tail and Clark Kent glasses. She downplays

every reaction, even when talking about penis size with the curious Mark.

Mark falls in love with his earlier attendant, Amanda. He describes her in one of his poems as having a “Tudor face,” yet Annika Marks, who plays her, is far more Mediterranean than that Anne Boleyn type one often sees in the small-town South.

John Hawkes, who plays Mark, has to work with his face instead of his body—and with his head held at a difficult angle. Hawkes has excelled as dangerous men: the Manson figure in Martha Marcy May Marlene and the meth-cooking uncle in Winter’s Bone.

Although the gold standard of paralytic acting is still Daniel DayLewis in My Left Foot—there’s no shade of a confined man’s wrath here—Hawkes’ gentleness and fine comic timing make The Sessions a sex comedy of a variety we haven’t seen before.

The sessions with Cheryl give Mark confidence, and he was a talker already—as much as his lungs allowed. His confidant is

Father Brendan (William H. Macy), who hallows Mark’s plan. (He is punished for it: Mark’s conversation becomes more and more explicit, and the harrowed priest is driven to cigarettes and beer.)

The scenes of Hunt and Hawkes together required a lot more physicality than you get in American movies, and the mood goes to the border of raunch. (It turns out not to be a good idea to sit on the face of a person who has to sleep in an iron lung.)

The Sessions pleasingly records the sunlight, the cafes and the cottage gardens of Berkeley, one puzzling inset of a cable car notwithstanding.

But the conflict between Cheryl and her husband, Josh (Adam Arkin), comes off as contrived.

Cheryl is strictly professional at first. When Mark tries to quiz her about what she’s like, she responds, “What you’d want to know about me is that I’m a private person.”

Eventually, she describes Josh as a philosopher and a guitar player. We can see that as soon as the words are out of her mouth, they sound to her (and us) like “He’s a bum.” Josh is usually shown reclining, and later he throws a jealous fit at the letters Mark sends.

To gin up the potential romance, The Sessions wanders away from the respect it gives to the unusual and certainly difficult profession. Things don’t have to be this way. When Cheryl comes home unnerved by a hard day’s work, Josh says without irony, “You’re a saint.” It might have been funnier to take The Sessions in that direction; there still are Berkeley (and elsewhere) husbands who wouldn’t mind.

We get what we get in the movies, and The Sessions is essentially lovable. Hawkes and Hunt are ultimately very touching, and Lewin’s two final matching shots are both gently sentimental and tastily mordant. This movie could have gone so, so wrong.

A moment’s indecision by Alex may be the end for the couple. Director Julia Lokte tells the story in existential-trudge fashion.

The randy, playful lovers appear set up for some terrible fall, seemingly blind as they are to the gravity of the mountains and the hardship of the life there. A fan of long, impressionistic scenes, the director floats on a layer of ambient dread. Gael seems adrift, but Furstenberg keeps the film alive; she suggests tension between the role and the person. WRECK- IT RALPH (PG; 108 min.) Stark raving ingenuity makes the new Disney 3-D animated feature a rare treat. The story walks a fine line between the cute and the uncanny. An apelike 8-bit video-game heavy has been demolishing the same apartment house for some 30 years. Shunned by the other characters in the Fix-It Felix Jr. video game, Ralph (voiced

by John C. Reilly) sojourns into neighboring video games in hopes of distinguishing himself. Through mishap, Ralph is stranded in a sticky, fer-girls racetrack game called Sugar Rush, in which adorable candy princesses race in cookie cars. A reject “glitch” girl called Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) longs to join the racers, but her participation may lead to the total destruction of the game. The metaphysics of how this arcade world works includes a transit system and homeless characters from out-of-order games and graffiti Yet the movie isn’t crushed by its own concept or by in-jokes, and the central fable transcends goodvs.-evil storytelling. J:L Jfle[`e^j LATELY, Santa Clara University has become a launching pad for DJs and music producers. With bars like the Hut and Da Silva’s Broncos right next to campus, student music mixers have found a prime area to forge the soundtrack for some wild nights. In particular, two students, David Belogolovsky and Raymond Jacob, have risen to dominate the SCU music scene. If you had told David Belogolovsky three years ago that he would be part of a successful lighting and event services company by his senior year, he would have been surprised. When he started out at SCU studying marketing and graphic design, Top Shelf Halloween Belogolovsky saw DJing as just a hobby. Belogolovsky, Masquerade who spins under the name DJ3W, got started playing at local house parties. “From there, I got my first show Wed, Oct. 31; under 21, opening for Minnesota, Babylon System and Helicopter $5, over 21, free Showdown, which are three really big artists,” says Belogolovsky of his first big break.

Neto’s Market & What’s really put Belogolovsky’s name out there is Grill, Santa Clara his connection to Top Shelf Lighting and DJ Services.

Belogolovsky heard of the small business through a friend and became one of its partners. Since then, the company has grown in size and demand. “We do weddings, concerts; we’ve actually done lighting for Foster the People and Dylan Francis, and at Snowglobe up in Tahoe,” Belogolovsky says.

The company also brings on other DJs to spin at shows that they mount.

Raymond Jacob, who produces music under the name Atlas, is one of these DJs. Originally from Texas, Jacob now studies marketing and music at SCU and spends the rest of his time creating original, fist-pumping tracks. “When I was a freshman I started getting really serious [about music production],” Jacob says. “When I make music, it’s the purest expression of me. It’s like a road map into my soul. I decided on the name Atlas because what better way than a map into Raymond Jacob as a person?” Jacob will often drop in at the Hut on Tuesdays to spin alongside his friends at Top Shelf, and he also maintains a gig at Da Silva’s Broncos, where he strives to create funky mixes that combine the current hits with his own original Atlas sound. “I try to mix in the newest, freshest stuff that people haven’t heard before and mix it with my music,” Jacob explains. However, despite his popularity as a DJ, Jacob notes, “I am a music producer first and foremost.

People call me a DJ, but I’ve never actually spun a turntable in my life. I do it in a completely different way, with my knowledge from Santa Clara and all of these new programs I use. So it’s funky, it’s fresh and it’s new. I hope people enjoy the sound.”

Leonard Cohen LEONARD COHEN’S recording career started way back in 1967. Earlier this year, Cohen released his 12th studio album, Old Ideas, and it reached his highest-ever charting position in the United States. He had always found an audience before, mostly among freaks, weirdos and fringe-art lovers, yet somehow Old Ideas managed to hit No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard charts. Old Ideas did just as well in eight other countries, including Finland, where Cohen, at age 77, earned the dubious distinction of being the oldest person ever to make the Wednesday, Nov. 7; 8pm; $39.50–$253 Finnish charts.

While Old Ideas is a good album, it’s not necessarily HP Pavilion his best work. But then again, all his albums, however infrequent, are remarkably similar, especially since the mid-’80s, when his vocals became more spoken than sung, and the music tended toward light, minimalistic, synthesized jazz. With each successive album, Cohen steadily lost more of his voice, until on Old Ideas it is barely a skeleton of its former self. This somehow makes each utterance that much more profound.

Old Ideas also uses more acoustic instrumentation than Cohen has relied on in a while, which does little to change the music, since the words have always been more important in a Cohen song than the music underneath them. This style does emphasize what a gruff narrator Cohen has become.

It’s like listening to a wise old man, sitting quietly in a smoke-filled bar with a lot to say and just a few words to say it in. Cohen is covering the same topics he has for years—love, betrayal, redemption, desire—but now he really knows what he’s talking about, or at least he’s gotten better at sounding like he’s bubbling over with age-old wisdom.—Aaron Carnes

The advice to have “date night” that you probably see everywhere but the bottom of your shoe is right on. Where it misses is in how to do it and why.

Researchers have actually quantified where happiness comes from.

According to studies looking at fraternal and identical twins raised together and apart, how happy you are appears to be as much as 50 percent genetic. About 10 percent of your happiness level stems from your life circumstances (stuff like your health, income, and the fact that you are now parents and feel like you haven’t had a good night’s sleep since John Quincy Adams was president).

The good news is, about 40 percent of your happiness is within your control, through how you think and activities you can do (like date night). The bad news on the good news is something called “the hedonic treadmill,” which is not a new form of torture at the gym. It’s researchers’ cute name for how we quickly adapt to both positive and negative changes in our lives and pop right back to our baseline level of happiness or mopiness.

This means it might not be enough to drag your weary, bleary parental cabooses out to dinner every Wednesday night. Sure, that’s better than sitting home fretting that your kid won’t get early admission to Harvard, but research by positive psychologists Dr. Kennon M. Sheldon and Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky finds that variety— “a continual stream of fresh, positive experiences”—is key in increasing and sustaining happiness.

So, you need to go out on a variety of date nights—changing up your activity every week and taking turns planning it so one of you will always be surprised.

Lyubomirsky talked on my radio show about having Grandma babysit her toddler overnight and taking off with

her husband to a hotel just a few miles from their house. You don’t have to do anything elaborate or expensive. You can borrow a Wii and ski the Swiss Alps from your living-room rug, have a picnic dinner and then ride the Ferris wheel—or just go get hot dogs and make out in the car.

Keeping your sex life alive is what differentiates you two from very tired roommates who once got drunk, hooked up and forgot birth control.

Like many new parents, you probably think you’re too exhausted to have sex, but maybe you’re just too exhausted to have the spontaneous sex marathons you had before the kid came. First, forget the idea of spontaneity. Parental sex needs to be scheduled sex, or you’ll probably never have it. You should also redefine sex as something along the lines of “doing things together naked.”

(Think of it as a snack-size version of your former sex life.) Remember, the point isn’t breaking endurance records; it’s getting started making out and then having as much sexual activity as you can stay awake for.

Surely, however, there are good times in between. And according to the research, another way to be measurably happier is expressing gratitude—taking moments throughout the day to appreciate what you have and to express appreciation to each other. Put in some effort to be happy, and maybe you’ll not only stop fretting about divorce, you’ll start having reckless sex (with each other), and before long, your husband will be taking time off from worrying that your 2-year-old doesn’t have enough extracurriculars to read Dickens to your womb.
