No Magic Bullet As someone who lives with depression on a daily basis, I find the article on amino acids and depression (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Acid Test,â&#x20AC;? Oct. 3) very misleading. In the article, the patient, who suffers from depression, takes one dose of 5-HTP prescribed by a psychologist and wakes up feeling 27 years younger, and has the concentration of a Zen Master. Give me a break! I am not going to invalidate the patientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience, but it is obviously caused by the powerful placebo effect. I have been prescribed new medications for depression and had similar amazing experiences. The magical â&#x20AC;&#x153;cureâ&#x20AC;? disappears in a few days. That doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean that amino acids or anti-depressant medications are not helpful. In cases of mild depression, the illness may disappearâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but not overnight.

Exercise can be a powerful treatment for depression, with results you notice right away. The challenge is when you feel depressed you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to exercise. I also

GMO: Right to Know Monsanto and other pesticide and junk food companies are trying to confuse us with $37 million in advertising containing misleading and false information. One of their first TV ads was pulled for deception.

Prop. 37 has one goal: mandatory labeling of products with genetically engineered (also called GMO) ingredients. Its focus is processed foods because 70-80% of these products contain GMO ingredients (U.S. Congressional Research Service).

Labeling for other foods can be tackled

later. There was no noticeable increase in cost to consumers when Europe started labeling. Fifty countries have GMO labeling or restrictions! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our democratic right to know whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in our food so we can make informed decisions about what we eat and feed our families. Ignore Monsantoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lies; consider the source: it was Monsanto who said that DDT was safe. Yes on Prop 37.

McPherson Distortion I am a middle-of-the-road Republican and I am disappointed with Bruce McPhersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s distortion of the facts. Bruce has shown he will say and do anything and I am not sure what he stands for.

Why was Bruce a loyal Republican during the June primary, when more Republicans were expected to come out to vote, then abandoned the [GOP] at the advent of a Presidential election in a largely Democratic demographic?

At the candidatesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; forum at SLV High last April, I was struck by Bruceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s obvious lack of local knowledge. Attending later forums I was further astonished to see him personalizing key points that Eric Hammer had articulated early on.

Recently, Bruce took credit for restoring our parks! I recall seeing Eric Hammer guiding the planning committees, working with the county, rallying volunteers and literally swinging a hammer to get the job done.

Forgetting to Remember The misunderstood ways that memory really works

W

hen I was about four years old I had a play date at Meryl Streepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house. It was just an informal kind of a thing where my dad, who built sculptures designed by Streepâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband, Don Gummer, dumped me off at the front door and picked me up a few hours later.

I remember very little: getting lost in a maze of hallways, losing my velcrofastened shoes and hanging out with the Gummer girls in a large bathroom, where they seemed to do a lot of their hanging out.

It was a recent article in The New York Times about one of those sisters, the now-28-year-old Mamie, that jarred my tattered memory of her parading around in a white gown, and ordering the younger ones to follow her lead.

I remember discarded garments on

checkered floors, shiny blond hair and a spiral staircase, all of which seemed incredibly glamorous at the time, and quite surreal two decades later.

It led me to ponder the recollection of memories: was the bathroom floor actually checkered? And if the brain records every stimuli, then why is only a small portion encoded as memory?

Can further details be unlocked from those cherished memories in the vault of our psyches? And if not, how do we maximize the capacity of our memories?

I took these questions to Benjamin Storm, Ph.D, a UC Santa Cruz professor of Psychology, and an expert on memory and cognition. Storm delivered the axe to my false notion that the brain is like a recording device, documenting every single stimuli that filters through the wrinkles of the mysterious organ.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just not the way it works,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From perception all the way to memory, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a constructive process. So, the way our brain is built is so that we are pulling information in and then constructing reality from it. And then as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re remembering, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also reconstructing earlier constructions.â&#x20AC;?

This reveals a startling truth: there is no ultimately â&#x20AC;&#x153;trueâ&#x20AC;? memory, but rather recreations of what we think happened.

This also explains why memories from childhood often take on more of a dreamlike quality. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over time weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re remembering our prior rememberings, and then we imagine more, and then we fill in gaps and the memory changes over time.

So one reason why our memories of early childhood may seem surreal is because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re rememberings of rememberings that are reconstructed...

and when we remember our past we tend to color them based on what we think now, and what we believe now,â&#x20AC;? says Storm.

But the fact that our memories can be highly inaccurate reflections of reality shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter, says Storm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still the memories we are using to define us now,â&#x20AC;? he says.

And though we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just flip a switch and remember everything exactly as it happened (there is substantial evidence that, especially in hypnosis, false memories can be constructed), cues are effective in stimulating memories: smells, music from a specific time and revisiting the site almost always bring memories, whether traumatic or happy, to the surface.

Like anything else, improving memory performance can come with practice. Rehearsing and retrieving information, keeping diaries and talking about the past helps maintain the memory.

Another, more obvious thing helps, as well: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just stay healthy,â&#x20AC;? says Storm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Exercise, healthy diet and sleep are probably the three most important things that you can do to help preserve your memory, especially as you age.â&#x20AC;?

Staying intellectually engaged is vital too, as the brain appears to be functionally unlimited. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So the more knowledge we have, the easier it is to encode new knowledge,â&#x20AC;? says Storm.

Stormâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest research also suggests that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s okay to let some things go.

In fact, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s necessary to keep our memories sharp. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We tend to think of forgetting as something bad [or] a failure of memory. But more and more, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a sign that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s working well, that we need to forget in order to better remember whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need to have certain information become inaccessible... weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing the memory system is designed in such a way that allows us to forget. And if we werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to forget, we would probably be worse off.â&#x20AC;? 0

Ballot Points, Part 2 Wrapping up our endorsements for the Nov. 6 election

ast week, we gave our recommendations for Santa Cruz City Council, country measures and state propositions.

Here are our views on the rest of the propositions, as well as the supervisorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s race. Whatever your choices, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to vote Nov. 6.

County Supervisor, Fifth District: Eric Hammer As impressive as Bruce McPhersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience is, we are more impressed with Eric Hammerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s energy in this campaign. His roots in the San Lorenzo Valley and his deep involvement in the community speak to the time and attention we expect he will put into the role of District Five County Supervisor.

State Propositions Yes on Prop 34 Prop 34 would make California the 19th state to abolish the death penalty. If passed, the proposition would eliminate the death penalty and replace it with life in prison and no chance of parole.

The propositionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s foundation is built on a 2011 study that found capital punishment to be cost-heavy, with few benefits. Keeping in mind the flaws in the judicial system that have led to convictions and executions of innocent people in the United States, as well as the costs of the death row system itself during a time of huge fiscal crisis, we recommend a yes vote on Prop 34.

No on Prop 35 No one argues that stiffer fines and penalties for human traffickers arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t warranted. Unfortunately, the devil is in the details of this ballot measure.

Ambiguous language and broad definitions would set up dangerous legal challenges to both the rights of victims and of suspects, while at the same time putting burdensome new requirements on local law enforcement agencies that are already overwhelmed in tracking the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 90,000-plus registered sex offenders. Consensual relationships between teenagers hovering above and below the age of 18 could also fall into a legal gray area. The goal is noble, but the

execution of the language leaves much to be desired.

Yes on Prop 36 In 1994, California voters approved Prop 184, widely known as the â&#x20AC;&#x153;three-strikes law.â&#x20AC;? Spearheaded by Mike Reynolds, father of 18-year-old Kimber Reynolds, who was murdered during a botched purse robbery, the goal of the law was to put violent career criminals behind bars for life. Unfortunately, far too many nonviolent offendersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve received a third strike for crimes as innocuous as stealing a pizzaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;face life behind bars with little chance of parole. Prop 36 would reduce prison sentences for some third strikers whose current offense is a nonviolent felony. Those whose previous crimes involve sex offenses, drug trafficking, homicide, firearms or weapons of mass destruction would be excluded from the changes. The Legislative Analystâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office estimates savings to the state of $70 million a year in the beginning, and $90 million yearly after that. With solutions needed to fix Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s State Prison budget and

Yes on Prop 37 This is a no-brainer. Prop 37 would require labeling on food made from plants or animals changed by genetic engineering, or genetically modified organisms, known on Volvo bumper stickers statewide as â&#x20AC;&#x153;GMOs.â&#x20AC;? Who among us wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want consumers to know whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in their food, especially when studies on GMOs have raised all sorts of health risks? Big ag, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s who.

Monsanto, the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest producer of genetically engineered seed, has spent over $7 million to oppose Prop 37.

Dupont, Dow, Bayer and BASF round out the oppositionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other top five donors, arguing that passage will increase food costs. Voters shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fall for this threat from the chemical giants; the cost of a food label is a fraction of a cent. More than 40 countries already have laws requiring GMO labeling, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time Californians demanded the same.

Yes on Prop 39 The stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current business tax code practically begs companies to locate their headquarters and employees outside of California while selling goods and services within its confines. Prop 39 would level the playing field and make all businesses in the state pay taxes through a fair, across-the-board method.

Right now, companies can choose between this option or decide to pay half their taxes on revenue made in-state and the other half on workforce and infrastructure within the state. Prop 39â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consistent tax code has already sprung up in larger states across the country, including Texas, Illinois and New Jersey.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be fooledâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Prop 39 will not kill jobs. If anything, it will protect them.

Yes on Prop 40 The Republican Party didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get its way during the latest redrawing of district lines, and now it wants to confuse voters. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the deal: Vote â&#x20AC;&#x153;yesâ&#x20AC;? and the state saves an estimated $1 million by keeping the lines as theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re currently constructed. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really that simple. 0

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s see a campaign about the issues, and leave the negative campaigning out of this race. What the voters want to hear about is the issues affecting the Fifth Districtâ&#x20AC;Ś Not mudslinging,â&#x20AC;? said Hammer in the release.

Themâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fighting words, we thought. Certainly such wording would seem to imply specific negative campaign activities performed on behalf of his opponent, Bruce McPherson.

Except that when we called Hammer, he was reluctant to talk about any. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meant by [the release] is, if there is or ever will be anything that is negative, by denouncing it, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming clean and saying, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hey I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want my supporters doing this,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? said Hammer, whose defiance was matched only by his complete and total ambiguity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening, that pledge is for both of us.â&#x20AC;?

Not so fast, says Stephen Reed, McPhersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campaign manager.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s said the negative third-party tactics are actually coming from Hammerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side. And heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ready to talk specifics, including reports from Boulder Creek residents that Service Employees International Union (SEIU) mailers in support of Hammer â&#x20AC;&#x153;work very hard to say Bruce is a Republican.â&#x20AC;? McPherson officially dropped his Republican Party affiliation this summer and is now running as an Independent.

Court Date Santa Cruzans took notice when they heard a new hotel apartment building on High Street would be heated by steam. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because in 1912, most homes were heated by wooden flame. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The whole point of building was to adopt the most modern and efficient innovations at the time,â&#x20AC;? local historian Ross Eric Gibson says of the Piedmont Court building, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this weekend.

Planners designed the building in the aftermath of 1906 San Francisco Earthquake to be fireand earthquake-safe. They also gave the building fold-down Murphy beds and the nationsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; first patented electric stovesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;plus an electrical plant onsite.

The Mission Revival building still has an elaborate court, a beautiful garden, a Pacific Ocean view and a stunning fountain. Out in front, High Street used to connect to Mission on the other side of what is now Highway 1 sloping toward downtown.

The Weekly received a press release from the Eric Hammer for 5th District Supervisor campaign that reads, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Both my opponent and I signed the Code of Fair Campaign Practices pledging to run a clean campaign and I am sticking by my pledge. I challenge him to do the same and to denounce any negative campaign activities by any third parties or independent expenditures working on his behalf.

The voters in Santa Cruz County deserve it.â&#x20AC;?

also none too happy about the recently vandalized McPherson for Supervisor signs which someone painted to read, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Republican: 19932012.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Hammer campaign allowed political literature to be printed full of mistruths, and his supporters vandalized political signs,â&#x20AC;? said Reed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just the unfortunate consequence of campaigns from time to time.â&#x20AC;?

Troubling past incidents in presidential candidate Mitt Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work with Mormon women raise questions about his agenda BY GEOFFREY DUNN

I

t was during the sweltering summer of 1983 that the family of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney made its celebrated escape from the oppressive New England heat for the cooler climes of Beach Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Pines, Ontario, where the Romney family owns a beachfront cottage on the shores of Lake Huron. Prior to departure, Mitt Romney placed the family dogâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;an Irish setter named Seamusâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;into a dog carrier and lashed it to the roof of the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chevy station wagon for the 12-hour exodus into Canada.

The infamous dog ride (dubbed the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seamus incidentâ&#x20AC;?) was to become a full-blown issue in the 2012 presidential primaries, as Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Republican opponents invoked the incident to attack Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;character.â&#x20AC;?

A far more ominous tale in the Romney canon, however, also took place that summer, one that has been largely swept under the rug as the former governor of Massachusetts challenges incumbent Barack Obama for the presidency.

It was in August of that year, shortly after the Romney family returned from their vacation, that a pregnant woman in her late 30sâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Carrel Hilton Sheldonâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;was informed by her doctor that she had a life-threatening blood clot lodged in her pelvic region.

In treating the clot, Sheldon was administered an overdose of the blood thinner know as heparin, an

overdose that not only resulted in significant internal bleeding but also extensive damage to her kidneys, to the point where she was on the verge of needing a transplant. Her life was clearly in peril.

Sheldonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doctor advised her that the overdose of heparin might have also harmed her 8-weekold fetus, and given the possible fatal repercussions to her, he recommended that she terminate her pregnancy.

Sheldon, a mother of four at the time (a fifth child had died as an infant), was then a practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), outside of Boston. The LDS leader in Massachusetts at that time, her â&#x20AC;&#x153;stake president,â&#x20AC;? was a Harvard-trained physician, and he counseled Sheldon to follow her doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advice to terminate the pregnancy and protect her own

life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Of course, you should have the abortion,â&#x20AC;? she recalled him saying.

According to an account later written anonymously by Sheldon for the LDS womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journal, Exponent II, it was after receiving this counsel supporting the potentially life-saving procedure that she experienced an uninvited visit in her hospital from her Mormon bishop at the time, 36-year-old Mitt Romney, who adamantly opposed the abortion.

Romney, according to Sheldon, â&#x20AC;&#x153;told me that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;as your bishop, my concern is with the child.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

ormon congregations are called â&#x20AC;&#x153;wardsâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;branches,â&#x20AC;? depending on their size. There are no full-time â&#x20AC;&#x153;priestsâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;ministers,â&#x20AC;? as there are in most Protestant and Catholic churches, but rather lay â&#x20AC;&#x153;bishops,â&#x20AC;? chosen to serve as the spiritual leaders of their wards. Larger amalgamations of LDS churches are called â&#x20AC;&#x153;stakes,â&#x20AC;? and their leaders, also lay members of the church, are called â&#x20AC;&#x153;stake presidents,â&#x20AC;? something akin, according to the official LDS website, to the position of a bishop in a Catholic diocese.

By the time of his visit to Sheldonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hospital room, Romney was a rising star in Mormon circles. In 1981, when he was only 34 years old, he was named bishop of a ward just outside of Boston and was serving in that

capacity when he confronted Sheldon about her pending abortion.

There was no empathy forthcoming from Romney, according to Sheldon, no warmth or sympathy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At a time when I would have appreciated nurturing and support from spiritual leaders and friends,â&#x20AC;? Sheldon wrote, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got judgment, criticism, prejudicial advice and rejection.â&#x20AC;?

In essence, Romney strapped Sheldonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s destiny to the hood of his Chevy and put his foot on the gas pedal. He was so agitated about the matter that he confronted Sheldonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents about her decision as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have never been so upset about anything in my life,â&#x20AC;? Sheldonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father told a reporter. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Romney] is an authoritative type fellow who thinks he is in charge of the world.â&#x20AC;?

Back at the hospital, a distraught Carrel Hilton Sheldon assented to her doctorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advice and terminated her life-threatening pregnancy. She recovered from her medical crisis, moved to the West Coast, continued to raise her four children and, because of her ward bishop Mitt Romney, she eventually left the church, never to return.

e can seem very distant, unattached at times, almost heartless,â&#x20AC;? says Judith Dushku, a lifelong Mormon and an associate professor of

unmarried Mormon mothers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I mean, if you were seated at a table with him and other Mormon men,â&#x20AC;? she says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;you werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t likely to be included in the conversation. [Romney] thought that any woman that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t married to someone who can support them, who wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t following church tradition in that respect, was just almost too unusual to consider in any collegial way.â&#x20AC;?

Perhaps no other woman in the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a feminist Mormon who has known Romney for nearly 40 years and who practiced in the LDS church of Massachusetts while Romney was in various positions of church leadership thereâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;has such a strong perspective on the Republican presidential nominee and his relationship to issues affecting women as does Dushku.

government at Suffolk University in Boston. Dushku has known Mitt Romney since the early 1970s, when they were both active in the LDS. Romney later served as her ward bishop, from 1981 to 1986, and as her stake president from 1986 until 1994, when he ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate against Edward M. Kennedy.

Dushku sees a disturbing pattern in the Romney resume, one that can be traced as far back as his two-year Mormon missionary work in France, during the late 1960s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a sense that Mitt went on his mission to understand people, to engage them as human beings, but rather to excel in the eyes of the church,â&#x20AC;? says Dushku. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was about fulfilling an assignment, not about compassion.

And that has been is modus operandi his entire life.â&#x20AC;?

Raised in a Navy family that moved around the country and a 1964 graduate of Brigham Young University, Dushku (who is also the mother of actress Eliza Dushku of televisionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) identifies herself as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;social democrat,â&#x20AC;? so she and Romney have often found themselves on opposite sides of the fence when it comes to politics. That said, she describes the two of them as being â&#x20AC;&#x153;friendsâ&#x20AC;? in those early years in Boston, along with being Mormon brethren, although never seemingly on the same plane.

Dushku was a single mother of four at the time and, she says, Romney never seemed to be particularly comfortable in the company of

But with rare exception this campaign seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the primary exception being an extensive interview in Religion Dispatches with Joanna Brooks, author of The Book of Mormon Girlâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;her voice has not been heard in the mainstream media as part of the cumulative cacophony defining Romney for the American electorate. In many ways, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been issued a free pass on his record as a Mormon Church leader, particularly in respect to his record on women and issues that impact their lives.

T

here was yet another problematic incident that took place during Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tenure as ward bishop, in 1984, involving another Mormon woman, Peggie Hayes.

Then 24 and active in the LDS church where Romney served as ward bishop, Hayes was a divorced, single mother of a 4-year-old daughter living in the Boston area.

Her family had been close to the Romneys and she trusted Mitt Romney as a friend and mentor, even as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;father figure.â&#x20AC;?

In the winter of 1984, Hayes had recently given birth to a son, Dane, when Romney visited her home in the blue-collar neighborhood of Somerville. The Romneys had been good to Hayes, she says, hiring her to help clean their basement and then urging other friends to help her find odd jobs. She was expecting more of the same type of support when Romney visited her home.

Instead she was â&#x20AC;&#x153;shockedâ&#x20AC;? by what she heard. According to Hayes, Romney â&#x20AC;&#x153;pressuredâ&#x20AC;? her to give her son up for adoption through an LDS agency. At first she thought she had misunderstood him, but much to her horror, she hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. â&#x20AC;&#x153;[Romney] told me it was really important to give the baby up,â&#x20AC;? Hayes said in her original interview with Globe reporters Frank Phillips and Scot Lehigh nearly two decades ago. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He told me he was a representative of the church and by refusing I was failing to comply with the churchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes and I could be excommunicated.â&#x20AC;?

Hayes took Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s admonition as a threat. She felt attacked, even intimidated. Moreover, it was insulting: â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was saying that because Dane [her son] didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have

a Mormon father in the home and because of the circumstances of his birthâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;being born to a single mother â&#x20AC;&#x201D;then the expectation of the church was that I give him up for adoption to the church agency so he could be raised by a Mormon couple in good standing.â&#x20AC;?

Hayes rejected Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advice and kept her son. She eventually completed her masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree at Emerson College and today serves as Coordinator of Volunteers for the Watertown Free Public Library outside of Boston. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I made absolutely the best decision for that kid,â&#x20AC;? Hayes declared. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wonderful young man. If there is a God, I think the last thing he would have wanted is for me to give my son away just on somebody elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision.â&#x20AC;?

â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;He doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a set of core values you can count on.

She, too, like Carrel Hilton Sheldon a year earlier, eventually dropped out of the church.

hese stories involving Mormon women of different age and different status in the church communityâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and all coming from when Romney was in a hierarchical (and, indeed, patriarchal) position of power over themâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;form an alarming, composite pattern of Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership career for more than a decade in the LDS Church. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Romney just doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any sensitivity to womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issues in general,â&#x20AC;? says Dushku. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But even more

than that, he genuinely believes heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always right, that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never made a mistake. In Mittâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s view, no one else has anything else to offer.â&#x20AC;?

Romneyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and Republicans in generalâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;are experiencing a significant gender gap at the polls this election season, with the most recent poll conducted by the YWCA indicating that Obama is leading Romney by 49-31 percent among women. In respect to issues that most directly impact women, this should come as no surprise.

As Republicans gathered in Tampa to coronate Romney as their nominee, several Republican speakers mocked the Obama slogan of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Forward,â&#x20AC;? calling instead, as Rebecca Traister, Salon columnist and author of Big Girls Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Cry, noted, for a â&#x20AC;&#x153;moment back in timeâ&#x20AC;? when â&#x20AC;&#x153;only a select few â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the white, the male, the straight, the Protestant â&#x20AC;&#x201C; could reasonably expect to exert political or financial or social or sexual power.â&#x20AC;?

In word and deed, Traister observed, Republicans â&#x20AC;&#x153;have been telegraphing their hope to return us to a moment not just before Roe, but before the birth-control pill, before the sexual revolution, before secondwave feminism hammered pesky

terms like â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;harassmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;equal payâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; into our lexicon, to a moment when womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bodies and sexuality and identities were menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to define, patrol and violate at will.â&#x20AC;?

Romney, it would appear, is the perfect Republican candidate to bring us back to that patriarchal future.

Last week as Dushku watched the first of the presidential debates, she saw a competent, even â&#x20AC;&#x153;slickâ&#x20AC;? politician sparring with President Obama, but she also saw someone who is a political chameleon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a man who has anything like a moral core,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very loyal to the Mormon church, pays his tithing, is faithful to his wife and so on, but he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a set of core values you can count on.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve known him for nearly 40 years.

He may have a different suit on, but he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t changed. His experience hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change. His performance was very consistent to the Mitt I knew back then. He canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t relate to average working women. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still coming from a place of privilege and entitlement.â&#x20AC;?

The Sensitive Rapper Macklemore goes meta and Millennial on â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Heistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;

ubjects not typically mentioned in rap songs: Malcom Gladwell books, support for gay marriage, Reaganomics, grandparentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; clothing and Discovery Channelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shark Week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Typicalâ&#x20AC;? notions of rap be damned, these topics are prevalent in the jams of Ben Haggerty, a.k.a. Macklemoreâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;a Seattle-based rapper with peach skin and red hair who, along with his producer and music partner Ryan Lewis, came out with his first fulllength album, The Heist, this month.

His style is unabashedly sincere and

sensitive, and he rejects the expected rapper persona of a swaggering, toughtalking gangster, choosing instead to just be himself.

With sold-out shows, upwards of 6 million views for his music videos on YouTube and a debut album that reached number one on iTunes, Haggerty undoubtedly possesses the potential to go toe-to-toe with Seattleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current title-holder for biggest hometown rap star: Sir Mix-A-Lot. But for now, Haggertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s battling himself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Put the gloves on, sparring with my ego. Everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest obstacle,â&#x20AC;? he

raps on â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ten Thousand Hours,â&#x20AC;? The Heistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opener. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For me my battle with my ego isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Oh my god I think Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m so amazing, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m the shit.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Oh my god this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to do well enoughâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;this song only got this many plays. I was hoping for more. Maybe Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not that good.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; It really comes from insecurity,â&#x20AC;? he told the Weekly over the phone.

OK, well, for the record, he is that good.

Putting yourself out there can be scary, though. And Haggerty admits heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thought about the potential

negative repercussions of going against the hip-hop grain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As the profile increases and you have opportunities to collaborate itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Oh hell are they gonna look at â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Same Loveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and still want to work on something?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? he says of his song voicing support for gay marriage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To me, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s even more reason to retweet the shit out of the video and promote it. This is what I believe in, and if Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m afraid Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to have an opportunity because someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gonna judge me then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not an opportunity that was meant to happen.â&#x20AC;?

His mostly teenage and college-aged fan base loves him for his honesty, which he says is less of a choice and more of a necessity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m personal, because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only way I know how to write. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to be general. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to write anything but whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going on in my life and what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m working on,â&#x20AC;? he says.

Admittedly, things are already a little meta on The Heist. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jimmy Iovineâ&#x20AC;? is based on his meetings with record executives, shedding light on his decision to pursue his career without representation from a label. (Instead Haggerty and Lewis have opted to create their own exposure by releasing highquality music videos on YouTube.)

Then again, the Millennial generation may just be able to relate to the struggles of a famous person like Haggerty. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t throw a stone into a room of 20somethings without hitting someone with a blog, Twitter account or YouTube presence. Numerous studies point to Millennialsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; preference for creative expression over corporate stability.

Haggerty fits the bill as the new voice of rap for a generation whose members all fancy themselves a little famous, or in Haggertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own words, a generation of kids choosing love over a desk.

Big in Guam Santa Cruzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wooster returns from their new second home for album release

A

local band that shows up regularly on Best of Santa Cruz lists, Wooster has caused a sensation in both California and...Guam. The video for the song â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ooh Girlâ&#x20AC;? has received hundreds of thousands of hits on YouTube and a good deal of the traffic is coming from the little island. According to bassist Bobby Hanson, the song was being played on the radio next to Adele and â&#x20AC;&#x153;whatever else was popular six months ago.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We got really lucky with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ooh Girl,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They love it in Guam, and the video just blew up.â&#x20AC;?

So what does a band do when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re big in Guam? They go there, of course. The day after I spoke with Hanson, he and the band left to play a string of shows at Ralphyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lounge in Hagatna, Guam. When they return home, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be celebrating the release of the brand new Wooster album, If All the Dew Were Diamonds, with performances throughout California.

A band with a groove-driven, rocking sound, Wooster tends to get the slash treatment when being described: rock/reggae/funk/ soul/dance/etc. Rather than being symptomatic of a vague style, the inability to pin Wooster down to one genre is a testament to the variety of

musical influences that each member brings to the band. Collectively, Wooster has roots in punk, funk, jazz, folk, soul, hip-hop and more, and the members (Brian Gallagher, guitar, vocals; Caroline Kuspa, vocals; Zack Donoghue, guitar; Hanson, bass; Nate Fredrick, drums) rely on an organic songwriting process that draws from everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique musical angle.

This Saturday, Wooster will play a CD release party for their new record at Moeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s; the ticket price also includes a copy of the album. The name of the album is taken from John Steinbeckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tortilla Flat. In the book, two hungover paisanos, with not a penny to their names, find the beauty in the morning dew sparkling on the grass. When asked about the connection between the name of the album and the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s big-picture perspective, Hanson says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We may not be millionaire rock stars on Cribs just yet, but we have a strong musical force that drives us. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what has kept us together as a band and kept the drive to share our music with everybody, and rock as hard as we can, going.â&#x20AC;?

Times, guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke fuses the traditional sounds of his native West Africa with jazz, soul and European pop influences to create something that is both worldly and familiar. Born in the African country of Benin, Loueke played pop music as a youngster, but an introduction to the music of jazz guitarist George Benson inspired him to take up jazz. He headed to Paris and has since studied at the Berklee College of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute for Jazz. TEMPEST Based in Oakland with roots in Norway and Cuba, Tempest weaves together the sounds of traditional Celtic, American folk and progressive rock music to create a sound all its own. TIGER ARMY Under the constant leadership of Nick 13, Tiger Army has earned its title for the East Bayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premiere psychobilly. On the scene since their first show at the legendary 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley in 1996, the band has had a hard time hanging on to drummers and bassists, but their world tours and festival appearances keep faithful

19 fans hanging on to every distorted guitar riff. And since they liked playing festivals so much, they went ahead and made their own.

Those who were bummed that Paranormal Activity 3 provided no insight into what happened to Katie and Hunter (or about anything else, really) may be happy to know that the series is getting back on track, at least story-wise.

BACHELORETTE (R; 87 min.) Director-writer Leslye Headland jumps on the Hangover/Bridesmaids bandwagon with a seemingly darker comedy about Kirsten Dunst and some fellow bridesmaids (who used to call the bride â&#x20AC;&#x153;pig faceâ&#x20AC;?) wreaking havoc.

BELOVED (NR; 139 min.)

French musical follows the soap-operaish stories of a mother and daughter across half a century, as played by real-life mother and daughter Catherine Deneuve and Chiara Mastroianni.

END OF WATCH (R; 109 min.) Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end of watch for those who wondered what writer-director David Ayer has been up to after a rather lengthy break between projects. Having written two of the best bad-cop movies in memory (Training Day and Dark Blue), heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gone with a couple of likable recruits this time, in the form of Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael PeĂąa (but then, could anyone make Jake Gyllenhaal unlikable?)

Thanks to a routine traffic stop, they get on the bad side of some druglords.

FINDING NEMO 3-D (G; 100 min.) Will he be easier or harder to find in 3-D? Hopefully not harder, because Albert Brooksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; nerves are shot as it is.

FRANKENWEENIE (PG; 87 min.) In a bit of a career slump of late, Tim Burton expands his early short about a re-animated dog (which basically got him fired from Disney) into a full-length animated feature.

HERE COMES THE BOOM (PG; 105 min.) It seems like only yesterday we were all saying to ourselves, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it about time for another Kevin James movie? Where he plays some poor schlub who gets himself into a wacky situation? Pleeeease?â&#x20AC;? What?

We werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t saying that and in fact have never said that?

Well, nevertheless, here it is, with James playing a biology teacher who takes up MMA fighting to save after-school activities at his school.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA (PG; 91 min.) Adam Sandler and Addy Samberg team up for another movie, but this time itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s animated and Sandlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doing the voice of Dracula, so you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really have to see or hear him. His count runs a hotel for monsters that is stumbled upon by a human boy. Wackiness ensues.

LOOPER (R; 118 min.)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a hitman who specializes in rubbing out people sent back from the future (nope, close your checkbook, this doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actually exist yet). Guess who one of his targets turns out to be? If you said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;his future self as played by Bruce Willis,â&#x20AC;? you have watched exactly enough Twilight Zone reruns in your life to guess every scifi premise.

THE MASTER (R; 137 min.) Paul Thomas Andersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most accomplished film to date tells of the partnership between a shell-shocked Navy vet of 1950 named Freddie (Joaquin Phoenix) and a dapper, bigger-than-life fraud, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman).

THE PAPERBOY (R; 107 min.) Journalist Ward Jansen (Matthew McConaughey) moves home to Florida to investigate the curious case of a death row inmate (John Cusack) with the help of his kid brother (Zac Efron). And if all goes according to plan, Jansen probably takes off his shirt.

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (PG13; 103 min.) I know, I know, it must be a short film. Ha ha. But apparently there are perks to be found in this story of two seniors who take an introverted freshman under their wing.

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS (R; 109 min.) A struggling screenwriter (Colin Farrell) has just messed with the wrong gangster (Christopher Walken), by stealing his fluffy Shih Tzu. SINISTER (1994) Found footage? Murder houses?

Supernatural oogly-booglies who look like the guy from Slipknot? It all sounds pret-ty, pret-ty sinister.

TAKEN 2 (PG-13; 91 min.)

Boy, if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anything more embarrassing than having your friends and family taken once, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gotta be having them taken again. This time, Liam Neeson has to find a couple who are taken due to fallout from his last rescue mission.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m afraid Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m locked in to being a servant of the seasons and the morningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s early light. Actually itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a privilege. So, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably the confluence of crops and people. I/we teach people to grow plants organically, the applications are many and varied.

EVOb O`S bVS SfQWbW\U Q`]^a bVWa bW[S ]T gSO`- These days and time of season itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about coming in to admire and harvest all manner of peppersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;some insane number of varieties numbering greater than 80, perhaps even sneaking up on the century mark. The best of the old heirlooms, best of the modern production varieties. The large, blocky, thick-walled quadrato dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;asti giallo heirloom bell. The Cuban varieties.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an instance of why heirlooms are greatÂŹâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;beyond their gustatory attributes. They connect us with other cultures and cuisines, as do dried heirloom bean, like Cherokee Trail of Tears. Or the Jimmy Nardello, a Sicilian heirloom pepper, long and sinuous, looking like a chile but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sweet with undertones of smokiness. It was brought to America by Giuseppe Nardello and passed on to the next generation, grown in a backyard in Narragansett, Rhode Island.
