Other enthusiasts will show up to trade classic computer games from Frogger to Warcraft, thereby functioning as participants in a

larger game. Local artists James Morgan and John Bruneau are orchestrating the whole shooting match. Morgan and Bruneau, both lecturers at the CADRE Laboratory for New Media at SJSU, will also bring the co-op to the (e)MERGE ZERO1 Biennial street festival on Sept. 14 on South First Street, as part of the biennial’s emerging artists component. Holding true to most ﬂavors of contemporary new media art, a thousand plateaus of meaning are disguised within all components of the nomenclature, so one can either refer to the project as a “co-op” or a “coop.” Perhaps the coop refers to the temporary installation at WORKS, while the co-op is ever-evolving. Just as the moniker ZERO1 exhibits

multiple layers of meaning, each component of the biennial does the same. Both Morgan and Bruneau occupy the interstices among game theory, networked art and creative data mining, so, according to them, the co-op shatters the space-time continuum, merging the history and future of arcade games—all to explore the biennial theme of Seeking Silicon Valley. I recently spoke with both of them, at the same time, so allow me to (e)merge their comments. “The gaming co-op came out of a lot of things,” they said. “Part of it is this yearning for the golden age of video games, but we see the arcade making a resurgence and merging with do-it-yourself culture. People are now saying, ‘I wanna make me one of those.’ More and more people are making their own arcade games. We see this popping up on both coasts and overseas as well. We want to tap into that ‘make my own arcade cabinet’ by collecting all the games of these individuals.” When it comes to physical places,

the DIY gaming community has taken hold in places like New York, Austin and Boston, but even though Silicon Valley produces many of the workers, Bruneau and Morgan claim a DIY artist collective hasn’t yet emerged. The time is now. “The game scene is here, but the art scene isn’t,” they told me. As a result, anyone seeking the past, present or future of Silicon Valley will find them all at WORKS/ San Jose. As I listened, Morgan and Bruneau elaborated on the multiple dimensions of opportunity for anyone who visits. “Several things will be going on,” they told me. “But one of the things we’re trying to encourage is for people to make their own games and bring them. One of the cabinets, very specifically, is set aside for SJSU students and the game development club that’s here. Eight-week-old Zona Rosa is one of those bright spots. The small (OK, tiny), independently owned, urbane restaurant is just the kind of

business The Alameda—and Silicon Valley at large—needs. The name of the Mexican restaurant is a nod to one of Mexico City’s fanciest shopping districts and neighborhoods. Think Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles or London’s West End. “We feel like the neighborhood is up and coming,” said Susan Gentile, co-owner along with Anna ZamarotizoPizzo..Maybe it’s wishful thinking that The Alameda might one day become La Zona Rosa of Silicon Valley. But why not? If there were more restaurants like Zona Rosa, it could happen. The name also refers to the nearby Rose Garden neighborhood and represents an effort to draw from local purveyors (Barefoot Coffee, J. Lohr wine). Gentile and Zamarotizo-Pizzo are ﬁrst-time restaurateurs, but they seem to have gotten the hang of things very quickly. They remodeled the tiny storefront (it used to be a cheesesteak shop) with heavily stuccoed walls, heavy wood

tables with leather covered chairs, iron work, and little curios and accents from Mexico. These touches make the place look like an old church in a dusty southof-the border town. The sidewalk seating is appealing, too. Zamarotizo-Pizzo has a background in accounting but also ran a catering business where she perfected her take on the taco and other classics of Mexican cuisine. Gentile has a background in ﬁnance and runs the front of the house. There’s a lot to like about Zona Rosa. The menu is small. A tidy little restaurant should have a tidy little menu. The menu changes regularly, but when I went, there were just eight appetizers, six masa-based dishes (tacos and enchiladas), one larger entree and two desserts. There are just six, well-chosen bottles of wine available, plus beer, a few delicious beer and wine cocktails, and nonalcoholic drinks. Go for the chavela ($8), a Dos Equis beer blended with lime juice, two kinds of chiles, tomatillos and a bit of ginger. There is nothing better than that on a warm summer night. There’s some great food packed into that little menu. I’d call the food neotraditional—classics of Mexican food upgraded with premium ingredients and a few modern ﬂourishes.

I loved the trio of salsas and chips ($4), which included creamy smoked cashews, roasted tomatillo-avocado salsa and “Tito’s hot sauce.” The soup varies, but when I came, it was a supremely delicious gazpacho made with chunks of avocado and sweet shrimp ($10.50). Perfect late-summer stuff. My favorite starter was the tostadas de atun ahi ($12), two crispy housemade tortillas topped with a squiggle of smoky chipotle cream sauce, crispy leeks, avocado and thin but wide slices of raw tuna. Salty, crispy, creamy and silky textures and flavors came together all at once. The tacos are the star of the show. The masa for the house-made tortillas comes from La Finca, a vendor in Oakland. The tacos de costillas ($14.50) are outstanding, two beautifully composed blue corn tacos layered with guajillochile-braised Niman Ranch baby-back ribs, cabbage, avocado and tomatilloavocado salsa. For something a bit lighter but no less delicious, go for the salmon tacos ($16.50), blackened wild salmon served with corn relish, sliced jalapenos and red onions, a dab of sautéed shiitake mushrooms, a squirt of a cilantroflavored aioli and a bit of crumbled bacon. Hot damn. The side dishes elevate the tacos further. You get a choice of soupy Rancho Gordo pinto beans made with bits of bacon and Niman Ranch skirt steak, or pan-fried and roasted potatoes with poblano chiles. For something more substantial, try the cochinita pibil ($17.50), a Yucatan classic made with slow-cooked, achioteseasoned pork, alubias blancas beans and tangy pickled red onions. Some might grumble that 16 bucks is too much to pay for two tacos, but this is not a taqueria. The food is made with premium ingredients and artistry, and is in line with what you’d find at nonMexican restaurants of similar caliber. Just because it’s Mexican food doesn’t mean it has to be dirt-cheap. Zona Rosa is a step above most South Bay Mexican restaurants and a step in the right direction for The Alameda.

Great Scott’s Scott’s Seafood, one of the anchors of downtown San Jose’s dining scene, has just reopened after an extensive, two-month remodel. The 26-year-old restaurant now looks different inside and out. Inside, there are new carpets, new paint, new tile in the entrance and bar area and new lighting. Overall, the dining room has a darker look and feel. The biggest change is the addition of an outdoor, sixth-ﬂoor patio with views to the south and east. year to start when talking about the birth of punk rock. It’s the year the Sex Pistols started to build a small but noteworthy audience. It’s also the year of the landmark 100 Club Punk Festival in London, which brought together the Clash, the Pistols, the Damned and a lesser known band called the Vibrators. Though they weren’t as accessible—or as angry—as their contemporaries, the Vibrators ﬁt right in with the energy of the British punk movement, releasing a couple of idiosyncratic, underrated albums. They’ve been touring nearly constantly since their inception, still playing small, obscure venues. The Boats! and Factory Minds open. Eye of the Tiger WE lost Phil Tiger, 58, who died of cancer Aug 30. The news made me think of “Didn’t He Ramble,” a New Orleans song celebrating the here-comes-trouble life: And when he took his ladder out to go and paint the town/ They had to take their megaphones to call the rambler down. Tiger was a genius for stirring it up, but the talent for mischief shouldn’t eclipse his art. That artistic talent is demonstrated in pictures on Tiger’s Facebook shrine. So is the grief of those “who knew him or wish they did.” Tiger grew up in Saratoga. He was the student body president at Prospect High, according to his old friend Jan Bernstein Chargin. As an adult, Tiger joined with fellow artists Larry Eder and Steve Briscoe to exhibit at SCU’s Freight Door Gallery. These students put up more than 20 shows, despite the insignificant $100-a-year budget. Eder, today a publisher in Wisconsin, says, “Phil had the skill of a Dutch master, a real ability to draw.” Tiger did drawings of DaVincian intricacy, but he also created jewelry: miniature stag-head rings. “He picked up some serious jack on those,” Eder says. Chargin emphasizes “the quieter serious artist. Phil would be very meticulous, when he set out to work, with all the pencils lined up right. Many times I had to go out and get the right kind of paper or eraser for him. He wrote a play, he had a couple of manuscripts. He always worked manually. He was the last person on earth to do a poster with an Exacto knife and rubber cement.” It was the performance artist and punk rocker that more people knew: Tiger performed in the Bruces, creating a space-craft called “the BX90” from cardboard and dry ice as stagecraft at Marsugi’s for one show. Tiger was the handsome young cat on the cover of the Mercury News’ West magazine in 1986, above the caption “San Jose’s Lonely Bohemians.” He found spaces in the alleys, on freight spurs and in derelict fruit-canning warehouses. Tiger honored the debris of this city in the uproarious 1990 “Couches of San Jose” calendar. He chronicled discarded furniture: once the star of your living room, now an immobile pile of crap on your sidewalk. In his last years, Tiger came to the Citadel art studios on North Fifth Street. Tiger was always reaching out to younger artist, Chargin notes: “He always take an interest in them, and wanted to see them succeed.” When not working in virtually all media, Tiger pursued other interests. Eder said, “Phil had some interesting ways to tell girls he liked them. There was a nude model who attracted Phil. So he tossed Vienna sausages at her, and she ran screaming around the room to get away from him. He was always fascinated with women he couldn’t scare the shit out of. Sometimes he took people aback.” The night Chargin met Tiger, she says “I had him thrown out of Original Joe’s for grabbing my shoulders and screaming about Vikings.” After that, he was her boyfriend for a time, and they were friends for 23 years. Phil Tiger was the sometimes-scary life of the party, or the surrealist who hit eggs pitched to him with a baseball bat at a performance art piece at the WORKS/San Jose gallery. He was the familiar figure at the late Ajax Lounge, making the bartender hold his temper by counting to 86. He was aptly named: If Tiger had fear, I never saw a flash of it.—Richard von Busack

(R; 90 min.) If the acting in Craig Zobel’s film were as powerful as the premise, it would be unwatchable. I’m trying to be careful not to reveal to much about the plot, but the true-life story was more than notorious enough. Dreama Walker plays the victim, Becky, and she may have the role of a lifetime here. She has to be an ordinary, nuance-lacking girl with big eyes and an overbite who never suspects she’s being manipulated. The action is set in a fast food restaurant in Ohio during the season of slush. The staff is just getting through the shift when a man identifying himself as a police officer (Pat Healy) phones in. A customer has complained that a cashier fitting Becky’s description has stolen some money from her purse. The officer could come in and arrest Becky on the spot, but it might go easier on the girl if the manager could just search Becky for the money. And when the money isn’t in her pockets, the “policeman” suggests that perhaps it’s concealed in her clothes, and away we go. During the six-hour or so ordeal that follows, various members follow orders from this so-called officer via the phone. Zobel does a worthy job of taking the erotic out of this movie by concealing Walker from the camera during the worst of what happens. This brave and divisive indie movie offers us a shaming question: Why

is it that we do what we’re told in the Land of the Free? I don’t think Compliance is an exploitative or a manipulative movie. But there’s something that screams inside you when you’re watching to get on that phone and shout back at this voice of authority with its need to probe, to know. COSMOPOLIS (R; 109, min.) The unimaginably wealthy hypochondriac Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) goes on his rounds in the near future, spending most of a long day traveling at parade-ﬂoat speed through the city. Sometimes along for the ride: an art dealer (Juliette Binoche); Samantha Morton as a more astute oracle than the one she played in Minority Report, and Sarah Gadon doing an expert emulation of a Hitchcock blonde. Pattinson, poreless tween heartthrob, now has a retro-futurist look, like those hair-oiled replicants on the cover of a Kraftwerk album. David Cronenberg’s talky but brilliant adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel feels like the future, the way The Dark Knight Rises was supposed to feel. Cronenberg’s gift, as always, includes a subtle and all-pervasive atmosphere of distortion and an oncologist’s sense of humor. The downside is that the theatrical element Cronenberg lent A Dangerous Method returns. The speeches sound too much like speeches. However, they’re urgent, intelligent speeches, all about the almost living malice of hypercapital. So Cosmopolis is something like the anti-matter version of Atlas Shrugged. But this summers’ vacances is eclipsed by the serious injury of Ludo (Jean Dujardin, of The Artist), oft the life of the party who is suddenly hit by a truck in Paris right before departure time. FOR THE next few weeks, studios will be rolling out their prestige films at international festivals. From the beachfront pavilion of Lido, here’s a first report from the Venice Film Festival. Based on Mohsin Hamid’s popular post-9/11 novel, Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist recounts the tumultuous experience of Pakistani Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed) in America. After graduating from Princeton and becoming a successful Wall Street analyst, his comfortable niche slowly crumbles in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. Falling victim to racial injustices, Changez’s questioning of the American Dream leads him back home to Pakistan, where he enters academia. But when an American colleague disappears, Changez finds himself with a target on his back once more. While the political thriller aspect of the film is lacking, Nair’s moving portrayal of Changez’s personal journey echoes her excellent 2006 adaptation of The Namesake. Canadian cinema darling Sarah Polley’s first documentary feature, Stories We Tell, is a mash-up of interviews with friends and family regarding her deceased mother—a twice-married stage actress who also had an affair with a producer who Polley learned, at age 30, is her biological father. If the project sounds self-indulgent, it is. But by weaving together many perspectives, which often contradict one another, the film opens up a fascinating dialogue between memory and objectivity.

“Pourquoi?” constantly asks Martin Kazinski (Kar Merad), the nondescript IT guy in Superstar who becomes the subject of public attention thanks to a sudden onslaught of viral videos and candid photos featuring him. Within hours, he becomes an Internet sensation who can’t take two steps outside without drawing a mob. The film begins as a promising mystery seeking to uncover the reason behind Kazinski’s unexpected fame but then devolves into a tedious mess thanks in large part to a botched romantic subplot involving a selfish journalist. Director Xavier Giannoli thinks he’s got a finger on the pulse of contemporary social media and celebrity culture, but rather than achieving smart social commentary he merely misfires with a lackluster dramedy. Michael Shannon takes a turn as sociopathic New Jersey hit man Richard Kuklinski in Ariel Vromen’s The Iceman. Like a disco-era Dexter, Kuklinski makes a killing doing mobster Roy’s (Ray Liotta) dirty work and launches his unsuspecting family into the echelons of the upper middle class; that is until Kuklinski’s greed and ambition land him in the crossfire between feuding mafia bosses. Chris Evans makes a memorable appearance as his business partner, an ice cream man who freezes his victims to confuse the authorities. The cinematography and editing create a sharp, stylish aesthetic, but it’s not quite enough to disguise a middling script. Misa Shikuma

lives, the most proactive character shades their growth: Max (Francois Cluzet), who is unnerved half to death by a close male pal’s sudden confession. Cluzet slapstickish, nouvelle riche aggravator, makes for a kind of prouder Basil Fawlty (Max even names his boat after himself). The women who have to bear his ego include Marion Cotillard as an anthropologist who can’t settle down, and Valérie Bonneton as Max’s slow-burning spouse. Self-consciously like Sautet, but rather too much like The Big Chill (hark unto oldie needle-drop after needle-drop), it’s not without interest but it would have been better as a serial—anything to avoid that pat ending. THE MOVIE Sleepwalk With Me is made pretty strictly for devoted fans of Mike Birbiglia’s stories on NPR’s This American Life. The Brooklyn comic Birbiglia co-wrote, co-directed (with Seth Barrish) and stars in an adaptation of his one-man show, based on short stories he wrote. Birbiglia’s “Matt,” a standup comedian, has three worries. His career as a comedian is stalled. He has a girlfriend, Abby (Lauren Ambrose), who wants to get married and have a baby. He suffers from an untreated sleep disorder, which causes him to wake up with nightmares. Matt bartends at a comedy club, where he’s a comedian to be used for emergencies only. He seems to get more rest onstage than he does in bed at night. Matt’s problems coalesce when he gets an aged and disinterested agent named Colleen (Sondra James). Colleen doesn’t think much of Matt, but she books him at minor gigs far apart all over New England. The woodsy road-trip scenes open up the picture, as do the streetscapes of well-off, leafy Brooklyn. Still, the sleepy-eyed, failureprone comedian’s passiveness grows wearisome. Birbiglia is not a deft physical comedian. Even if these dreams are autobiographical, they don’t really illustrate anything. They’re staged with

the flat quality of pointless whimsy. There is, however, something about this puttylike underachiever that brings out the maternal side of women, because Birbiglia has a noteworthy supporting cast of actresses. The quirky, Sleepwalk lively Ambrose With Me comes on with a lot NR; 90 min. of dazzle. Her Abby Plays at the weaves her fine red Aquarius in hair into Slavic braids, Palo Alto. and she rocks out at a party to a uke version of the 1927 tune “Side by Side.” The question of whether or not to settle down should have some pungency, especially when it’s clear how badly Abby wants to nest. She’s a determinedly nice, sweet character, though. Her needs don’t have any edge, or any pain underneath. Mike’s mother is played by the tiny, bracingly odd Carole Kane, a eccentric stalwart of ’70s cinema. Kane is pale and lunar, with a slurry voice like an inebriated Betty Boop. Even though Birbiglia is acting out his own personal life, Sleepwalk With Me is less funny than puny. There are such things as sweet little movies (Robot and Frank, for example), but this is relentlessly miniature: the tiniest film of the year. Richard von Busack
