Decade’s Docudrama Re: Dan Pulcrano’s article “Be There Again” (Cover Story, July 11-17, 2012) and Rudy Rucker’s article “Death of Hippie Hope.” Neither article indicated how Craddock died. Was it an “outlaw
death” like his character Quack Jack, or was it a more prosaic one? I liked the excerpt from Be Not Content, but the ’60s have become such a cliché now, it’s hard for any fiction about the era to have much influence one way or another. The emphasis on overbearing cops is no longer relevant as an object lesson, since the real problem now isn’t overzealous police but rather a more sophisticated establishment that has learned how to co-opt those aspects of rebellion that have market value and marginalize everything else. Fightin’ Words Wow … and we wonder why the Metro has no credibility, with writers like this (The Fly’s “All in the Family,” July 18). The SBLC did get their “asses kicked” in June because they were too busy supporting nutcases like Patricia Martinez-Roach and not legitimate incumbent contenders like Steve Kline or Jimmy Nguyen. Room to Panic The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors took the month of July off from work as usual, but some discreet construction has been occurring behind closed doors. As part of a $900,000 project approved in closed session in October 2011, a panic room is being installed in the Board chambers. The price tag for the panic room is not to exceed more than $223,000, according to JEFF DRAPER, the county’s director of facilities and fleet. That means it should be just about complete by Fly’s estimation, because Draper, who was tight-lipped on design details, told us last week that more than $205,000 has already been spent on this particular installation. Sheriff LAURIE SMITH called the panic room a good idea, which isn’t a surprise considering she also recommended a $90K a year bodyguard— staffed by a sheriff’s officer—for Board President GEORGE SHIRAKAWA. This bodyguard comes in addition to another armed sheriff’s officer who already watches over Board meetings, which has left some county officials to muse that the Board could be a bit paranoid. The county hired Sea Pac Engineering, based out of Los Angeles, to complete the security improvements, which includes work on the West Wing, where the office of District Attorney JEFF ROSEN is located. Recent projects listed on Sea Pac’s website include buildouts for the State Department, Navy barracks and the U.S. Postal Department— the last of which were not sure whom the work was done to protect.

Just three weeks prior to filing the lawsuit on July 17 in Santa Clara County Superior Court, the Evans Law Firm—in conjunction with the Detroit-based Macuga, Liddle & Dubin PC—mailed 800 advertisements to residents of Milpitas, inviting support of legal action
against the 84-year-old landfill, which serves multiple communities across the South Bay and peninsula. Dolly Wu received one of the letters and subsequently joined the suit. A resident of Milpitas for 14 years, Wu spoke with Metro by phone while Ingrid Evans, a founding partner of the San Francisco law firm, attempted to direct the conversation. Asked how she became involved in the lawsuit, Wu said she received a letter in the mail before Evans quickly cut in to say “these sorts of lawsuits are generally filed in response to complaints.” The complaint seeks to garner support and court approval for a full-fledged class action lawsuit, and Evans says the Milpitas community is behind her. “Everybody is thrilled that somebody is doing something about this,” she says. “We received a lot of complaints about this.” The lawsuit alleges that managers of Newby Island Landfill, which is actually located in San Jose’s city limits, have failed for years to
mitigate problems relating to noxious odors and airborne pollutants and particulates, like dust and soot, despite numerous complaints from residents of Milpitas. The suit says that the defendant, landfill operator Republic Services, acted “intentionally, recklessly, willfully, wantonly, maliciously, grossly and negligently” in properly operating the landfill, in effect diminishing the quality of life for locals. The Evans Law Firm currently names just two people as plaintiffs of the 30,000 residing within the two-mile radius odor range of the landfill. Some critics have suggested that the suit does not reflect the sentiments of Milpitas residents but, rather, the ambitions of the Evans Law Firm, which specializes, in part, in cases of breached environmental law and poor landfill management. The situation seems to have been sparked on June 6, when the San Jose Planning Commission voted to recommend that the San Jose City Council approve Republic Services’ bid to extend operations of the Newby Island facilities. The city of Milpitas subsequently appealed the Planning Commission’s vote and is now waiting to see what the San Jose City Council decides at a meeting most likely to be held Aug. 14. There is no doubt that Milpitas residents have been complaining for

But Wu, the plaintiff in the Evans lawsuit, says the stench is already intolerable, especially in the summertime, when she says it grows stronger through the afternoon and often dissuades her husband and their 13-year-old son from leaving home unless absolutely necessary. “We never spend time outside, and we’ve abandoned the use of our lawn and our lawn chairs,” Wu says. It was about 10 years ago that the aromas of Newby Island began to grow noticeable, according to Wu. In subsequent years, it became a nuisance. Now, she says the smell is an embarrassment when friends and family are in town. Wu adds that her home’s value has decreased due to the smell. On top of everything, literally, is a layer of soot and dust that drifts from the landfill and settles upon Milpitas. But Ed Blake, a Milpitas resident of 40 years and chair of the Milpitas Recycling and Source Reduction Advisory Commission, says Evans Law Firm exaggerates the odor issue. “I’ve been here since 1972, and since then the odors have declined by orders of magnitude,” he says. “I occasionally catch a whiff of something, but it’s not a day to day event.” Blake says odors in the air may likely be from other sources, like the Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station and the San Jose-Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant, which receives raw sewage from more than a million people. “I don’t remember hearing anyone complaining about the landfill,” he adds. “I’m unsure what inspired Evans to do this.” Crabtree, with San Jose’s Planning Division, says that Milpitas residents who complain of landfill odors may actually smell the sewage treatment plant or the muddy shores of San Francisco Bay. And Republic Services has reported that of 160 odor-related complaints in the last year, only one was verified as originating in the landfill. Crabtree warns that the impacts of finding a new site could be much greater than a daily breeze of foul air. “If the landfill had to close, we would be taking the trash by truck to a site in Manteca, which would create transportation-related impacts,” Crabtree says. “Basically, we’d have more heavy trucks on the road, which would have environmental impacts of its own.”

Andrew Crabtree, environmental manager with the San Jose Planning Division, said that 155 odor complaints were received by the Bay Area Air Quality and Management District from 2005 to 2008, though only three were confirmed as coming from the landfill at Newby Island. The city of Milpitas recently hired a law firm—Jarvis, Fay, Doporto & Gibson, LLP, in Oakland—to help negotiate a compromise between Republic Services and the city about the odor problems associated with the landfill. But whether authorities have ever taken steps to reduce the offending odors is unclear. The managers of the landfill, Republic Services, refused to answer questions pertaining to the operation of the landfill, instead deferring all inquiries to the company’s public relations office in Phoenix, Ariz. Media relations manager Peg Mulloy said she could not comment on the odor problem “due to pending litigation.” The lawsuit’s timing coincides with Republic Services’ application to extend its permit to operate the facility. Currently, the landfill is expected to reach its capacity around 2025, according to Crabtree, who says that a rejection of the permit application would mean diverting local waste to a landfill in Manteca. But if the permit extension is granted, the legal maximum height of the waste pile will be increased to 245 feet, from the current limit of 150 feet. This would allow an extra 15 million cubic yards— enough trash to fill 4,750 Olympic size swimming pools—to the volume capacity of the landfill. Such expansion would not change current operations, according to Mulloy, of Republic Services. She explains that rather than allow more waste per day to enter the landfill, the proposed extension of the permit simply “allows us to do what we are already doing, just for a longer time.” According to a June staff report from the San Jose Planning Commission, an extension to the permit would not worsen any existing odor problems. The document states: “While the project would allow more waste to be deposited at the landfill, the project would not result in more waste being exposed at once than occurs under existing conditions due to the implementation of several odor control measures…”

While most of the Twitter community was sharing news, or expressing grief over the horrible shootings at the Aurora, Colo. screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” CelebBoutique.com took the opportunity to promote a new clothing line called “Aurora.”
“We are performing a focused set of limited restructurings that will collectively impact approximately 2 percent of our global employee population,” the company said in a statement, adding that the cuts “are part of a continuous process of simplifying the company, as well as assessing the economic environment in certain parts of the world.”
The tweet said, “#Aurora is trending, clearly about our Kim K inspired #Aurora dress;).” The Twitter community quickly grew enraged about the insensitive promotion. Some people demanded CelebBoutique donate money to the families’ victims, but most rightfully called the company out for its utter stupidity. “Whoever is running the @celebboutique twitter account should start packing up their desk,” said one tweet. “You are the worst people on earth,” said another. CelebBoutique did try to make amends in a series of tweets. The company claimed to have had no idea why “Aurora” was trending when they sent the tweet: “We are incredibly sorry for our tweet about Aurora – Our PR is NOT US based and had not checked the reason for the trend, at that time our // social media was totally UNAWARE of the situation and simply thought it was another trending topic – we have removed the very insensitive // tweet and will of course take more care in future to look into what we say in our tweets. That’s good news because the trend recently has been the so-called “talent acquisition,” where a company is bought for its brainpower and the product is then axed in a most unceremonious manner. After all, betraying your users is a lousy way to repay their patronage and support. According to The Verge, Sparrow was bought for “under $25 million,” which looks like an absolute bargain compared to the Facebook/ Instagram acquisition.— BN

his music, liberate his divided mind, reconstruct his character, remove personal crises, and thus allow him to transform the entire narrative of 20th-century art. Her book occupies the spaces between previous books on Cage, meditating on the things he didn’t say, providing a glimpse into life as Cage directly experienced it. Cage (1912–92) was not necessarily the first American composer to fuse East and West, but his approach to remove all ego and intention from his art emerged directly from his exposure to Zen. As a result, his approach permanently altered the historic flow of several creative disciplines, including music, dance, painting, sculpture and newspaper columns. Arguments about Cage and near-aggressive reactions to the
things he said still rage today, but his role as a precursor to performance art, conceptual art, turntablism, installation art, minimalism, live electronic music and “Be-in”-style happenings, cannot be denied. Today, anyone making sounds with turntables owes a debt to John Cage. Anyone choreographing a dance without an intentional narrative flowing through it owes a debt to the lifelong creative and emotional partnership between Cage and Merce Cunningham. Larson was an art critic in New York for many years and also a Zen practitioner, which is why her refreshingly nonlinear, non-Western understanding of Cage works so well. She plots the arc of Cage’s life as he discovers Zen and how it allows him to crack open his mind and show him a way out of his multilayered suffering, which then allows him to wake up and erase the mythical boundaries between art and life. In other sections, Larson goes on to illuminate many artists Cage inspired in the process, but throughout the book, Cage’s own voice—passages from conversations and lectures—
appears in the text, as do passages from Zen teachers like D.T. Suzuki and Huang-Po. Unlike any previous author, she presents Cage’s life as he experienced it, along with all the questions he asked, and presents his story as a classic spiritual path of suffering, realization and release from suffering. Writes Larson: “Cage [had] been struggling with self-judgments, selfloathing, anxiety about his sexual identity, fear of being himself—yet a powerful need to be himself, too. The mystics of West and East have told him to look up from his four walls and see the sky.” She specifically tracks the influence of The Huang Po Doctrine of Universal Mind, and how it emerged in Cage’s approach to indeterminacy and composing music without intention. From Huang-Po, “Cage saw the amazin amazing potential of dwelling in the omn omnipresent, silent, pure, glorious, m mysterious, peaceful joy of nonintent nonintention.” As he fo found himself at the epicenter o of the mid-20th-century avant-gard avant-garde, influencing and/or infuriating all those who flowed into the ri river he instantiated, Cage became a blueprint for disenfranchised artists everywhere. Larson, who studied Zen for years herself, appears to have taken up the reins with this book. “I said to my husband that I was addressing three of the most esoteric of topics: the life of an oddball experimental composer, cryptic Zen sutras and the origins of the art avantgarde,” she writes. “Yet the theme that unites them all—and that allowed Cage to open his arms to all of us and welcome us to a new world—was his realization of the path out of suffering. It’s available to everyone. And it’s transformative.” On Monday, East will merge with West at a bookstore in Mountain View, when Larson unfolds her book for the audience. We have John Cage to thank.

Wondolowski looks like most average white guys in their late 20s. In fact, he reminds me of myself in some ways. Of course, he is better looking, and tanner, and about 20 pounds lighter and a million times more athletic—and an inch shorter, thank you—but more or less we look the same. He arrives early for lunch at Rosie’s New York Pizza on The Alameda in San Jose, which bothers me because I’m late. He’s wearing cargo shorts, a white long-sleeved T-shirt and sunglasses wrapped around the back of his neck. He looks like a Sigma Chi alum. I apologize for my tardiness and ask him how long he’s been waiting. “Oh, about 10 minutes,” he says. “Did anyone recognize you?” “No,” he says with a smile, “and I love that.” We each get a slice of pepperoni.
I buy. It’s not every day I get to treat a professional athlete to lunch, let alone someone who makes nearly 10 times my salary and is quite possibly having the best season of any professional athlete in the Bay Area this year. His sport happens to be soccer—also known as football, if you want to be a British prick about it. But even the Brits and most other European soccer aficionados would be hard-pressed to pick Wondolowski—“Wondo” to the San Jose Earthquakes faithful—out of a random collection of Major League Soccer (MLS) players from the States. “That’s one of the many perks of being a soccer player,” he says. “Besides just a love of the game, but being able to go out and not having to worry about anything. There’s always a few fans or people I run into, but they’re

always very cordial and very nice. And I always try to talk to them, because I grew up a fan. I was a fan of the Earthquakes and when they were the Clash. Back when Donovan was there, going to games at Spartan Stadium. I feel like I can relate to them.” Donovan, of course, is Landon Donovan—the elfin L.A. Galaxy and U.S. National Team forward who started his MLS career in San Jose and is without a doubt the greatest American-born soccer player ever. In U.S. soccer circles, Donovan is also a lightning rod. It’s not even an argument—no American player has ever had more expectations from the time he was a teenager through adulthood. It can be argued that Donovan has vastly exceeded and conversely fallen short of those expectations, depending on how jingoistic one wants to be about our nation’s strides and shortfalls when it comes to soccer. Wondowloski tells me he and
Donovan became friends last summer, when Wondo was called up for the first time to play with the national team for the Gold Cup. It should be noted at this point that Wondolowski’s sudden emergence as the top scorer in Major League Soccer the last two seasons, which earned him back-to-back Golden Boot awards, has placed him under a spotlight not seen in San Jose since Donovan was leading the Earthquakes to MLS titles in 2001 and 2003. And yet, while Wondolowski has scored eight game-winning goals this season and leads the league with 17 total—eight more than Donovan has this season, setting him on pace to shatter the MLS single-season record of 27—fame has yet to catch up to his accomplishments, something he shrugs and accepts for now as a blessing in disguise. “I’ve always been a very shy and kinda laid back and quiet person,”
17 been (signing autographs) for a while and you just got done with practice and whatever, but you just said ‘no’ to an 8-year-old kid.” “Just wait. Some day that will be you.” Wondolowski leans back and laughs. “I’ll still sign for that kid.”
W
hen Chris Wondolowski was 13, his mother Janis took him to see his grandparents at a Kiowa tribe reservation in Oklahoma. The trip served as rite of passage of sorts, as Wondolowski learned more about his Native American ancestry, which comes from his mom’s side and makes up nearly half of his bloodline. “I wasn’t wearing headdresses to school,” Wondolowski says wryly, “but it still played an important part in my life.” But unlike boys raised on the reservation, where their lives are observed and traits considered, Chris received his Kiowa name after meeting with a tribal elder. He called him Bau Daigh, which was also the name of one of Wondolowski’s ancestors, a Kiowa chief. He has it tattooed across his ribcage. It means “Warrior coming over the hill.”

he air has cooled near the upper reaches of Stanford Stadium, while the pace at ground level has become feverish. More than 50,000 fans have come to Palo Alto on this night to watch the San Jose Earthquakes take on David Beckham and the L.A. Galaxy. The crowd has taken on a hive mentality. Beckham scored earlier in the game on a trademark bending free kick, but at the moment he looks remarkably pissed. So does Wondolowski, who spent a good portion of halftime screaming at the referees. The press box is getting tense as well, as fellow Metro writer Gary Singh sits to my right, looking like a music critic who mistakenly wandered into a sporting event. He mutters “not good” every time the Earthquakes lose possession. I ask him questions but the answers only come intermittently. It’s quite possible Gary is the most interesting

says Wondolowski, a somewhat comical dichotomy to his on-field persona, where he morphs into a raging maniac. “I’ve always been very confident in my ability, but outside of soccer I’m very, very shy. I’m not very social, and my wife (Lindsey) is the complete opposite. That’s how I get any friends. She goes and meets them and I’m tagging along. I go out with the guys and I’m pretty quiet. Especially when I was single, I was horrible at meeting girls. I would never go up to them.” The question now is how soon will more and more people start recognizing Wondolowski and coming up to him. It’s a topic he and Donovan have discussed. “We’d go out to dinner and he would get recognized a lot,” Wondolowski says. “People would come up for pictures and autographs and I’m like, ‘I’m glad I’m not you right now.’ He’s like, ‘At times it sucks because you can’t even look up and make eye contact, because then you’re inviting them, because you know what they would want. So, you have to put your headphones on and look down, especially in airports.’ He’s like, ‘People have called me selfish, called me names, but they didn’t see me the last hour signing autographs, and now I got to get to my plane before I’m late. And then they think I’m a dick. Alright.’ It just comes with the territory.” “Landon Donovan does seem like sort of a red ass, though,” I say. “He can definitely come off—” “You tell me though,” I add, “because maybe I’m wrong.” “I get a different side of it, because he can definitely open up a bit more, a bit unguarded,” Wondolowski says. “It’s like a fraternity,” I say. “You can do things you wouldn’t necessarily do in the public’s eye. I see a different side of him. He’s a nice, genuine person. He’s also … he doesn’t necessarily know how to deal with it in the best sense. So, he just tries to—he also likes being very reserved and shy as well—so he might rather not deal with it at all rather than dealing with some of it or trying to deal with all of it. So, he would rather keep it at a distance. I don’t hold that against him, but definitely at times he’s a dick. You’re saying no to a kid. That’s kind of a dick move. You have

man in the world, or at least the most mysterious: He doesn’t talk much, but when he does, he mumbles. The scoreboard reads 3-3 and the clock says the match has just entered the 60th minute. After giving away two goals in the first half, San Jose has made a remarkable comeback to equalize with scores coming a minute before and after halftime. Martin Chavez, a junebug winger from Honduras, sends in an Earthquakes corner kick from left of the box. The ball comes in at the height of a doorframe, allowing the nearest Earthquakes player, Ramiro Corrales, to jump and redirect the ball with his head into the middle of the box. In the jumble of bodies jockeying for position and flailing in wayward directions, Wondolowski is, as usual, in the perfect spot to receive the ball—except he’s facing the opposite direction of the goal. Without a moment’s hesitation, he continues to spin away from the goalkeeper and pirouettes into a right back heel flick to ricochet the ball into the net. He turns and runs around the goal to a group of soldiers watching the game behind a threefoot wall and throws all 165 pounds of his six-foot frame into a high-five.
He then takes a step back and brings a flat hand to his brow and salutes the soldiers in attendance. The entire stadium goes fucking nuts. “The way he plays the game, it’s not about speed and power,” Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop tells me a couple weeks after the match. “It’s about out-thinking them. He’s one of the best in the game.” The Earthquakes use the goal to win an improbable 4-3 comeback in front of a national televised audience, and secure first place in the league standings. It’s a stunning finish in what has become a stunning season, as San Jose has gone from among the league’s worst to first in less than a year. Before it’s all over, though, Beckham loses his head and kicks the ball at the referee and an Earthquakes midfielder Sam Cronin, who was feigning injury in the waning minutes. A light scrum breaks out and Beckham, fresh off the slight of being left off England’s Olympic team, receives a yellow card. Anyone other than Beckham would have seen a red card, but this is Beckham. (He did get suspended a game.) Time expires and Beckham shoves and shouts until leaving the field to boos and drinks thrown at his back as he walks into the tunnel.

nly four teams had a worse season last year than the San Jose Earthquakes. Injuries occurred at almost every position, heads hung low after giving up early leads, and at the club’s lowest point, the team went 13 straight games without a win. “It was just terrible,” says Dave Kaval, president of the Earthquakes. “You woke up every day and wondered, ‘When are we going to get a win?’” After the season mercifully ended, rather than dismantling the organization, Kaval, General Manager John Doyle and coach Yallop regrouped by spending a summer weekend in Half Moon Bay. It was less a retreat of wine and cheese than an excruciating weekend of counseling, where each man admitted blame for what went wrong in 2011 and how things could improve this season. “There were hard conversations,” Kaval says. The club wanted more leadership, so among its signings and transfers San Jose snagged hulkish Honduran defender Victor Bernardez. Then there was the addition of sparkplug and overall maniac Steve Lenhart to compliment Wondolowski up top. Looking to add pace on the wing, Marvin Chavez came over from FC Dallas. Each man had admirable traits before coming to San Jose, but nothing uniquely spectacular. Together, with the partial cast already in place, the Earthquakes have now become an example of a team greater than the sum of its parts, possessing a staggering goal differential of 17-plus as it sits atop the league tables entering this week’s All-Star break.
T
here are some things you should know about Chris Wondolowski, so the picture of a man scoring goals, screaming his head off at referees and jawing with opponents jives with the reserved, happily married man. Sometimes he goes home after games and has
a beer to relax; other times he’s inconsolable for the next 24 hours as he watches the replay of a loss or poor performance over and over. Born and raised in Danville, his parents divorced when he was in the eighth grade. Characteristically, Wondolowski heard the arguments and went through the oddly universal experience of transferring between divorced parents at a McDonald’s parking lot. He was lucky in many ways, because his parents both remarried within years of their divorce. He gained a halfsister and two stepsisters, and his parents continued to work together to raise him and his two younger brothers, ensuring the support structure was always in place. Ann Wondolowski, Chris’ aunt and his father’s twin sister, bought him his first car in high school, a Ford Explorer. When he received little attention from scouts despite a standout three-sport career at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, he chose Chico State over UCLA so he could continue playing soccer. Ann paid his tuition. She went a step further by attending almost all of his games at Chico. This continued through the time he was drafted by the Earthquakes in 2005, left for Houston when the franchise relocated in 2006—he spent almost four seasons there mostly as a reserve, stuck behind some of the best forwards in MLS—and then was traded back to San Jose in 2009. He made the league minimum at the time of the trade, a paltry $30,000 by professional athlete standards, so Wondolowski and his wife Lindsey, whom he met while running in athlete circles at Chico State (she played volleyball), stayed at Ann’s house until last November, when they bought a home in San Ramon. “She’s a driving force,” Chris says of his aunt. “I’ve always been grateful for her.” He’s equally grateful to his father, John, who played soccer at Cal and coached almost all of Chris and his brothers’ teams growing up. The sibling rivalry instilled by the Polish patriarch manifested itself into a culture of constant competition

around the house. It also left the impression with some kids in their Danville neighborhood that the Wondolowski boys were a little too intense when it came to sports. “We played everything from standard wiffle ball and basketball or crazy soccer games with rolled up socks, whatever we could get our hands on and be competitive,” says Stephen Wondolowski, the middle brother who now coaches the Earthquakes teenage academy teams after a short MLS career. (The youngest Wondolowski, Matt, plays rugby at San Jose State.) “It might start out as a fun little throwing the ball back and forth and then it’s a competition and rules are getting made along the way,” Stephen continues. “We had a lot of 12-inning wiffle ball games, which sounds strange because I was winning after the ninth inning. But we had to play three more until he was winning.” The Wondolowski boys’ mother, Janis, knew little about sports, but she too sacrificed to make sure her sons made it to all of their games. The woman who takes care of that role now is Lindsey. In addition to teaching English as a second language to students in Cupertino, she keeps things organized, sheltering Chris from ticket and autograph requests while also doing her best to prevent her hyperfocused husband from brooding. “Lindsey is definitely the socialite of the couple,” Stephen says. “She’s not super-out there or anything like that, but she’s the one who keeps in touch with family and friends, and it really enables Chris to have a simple life.” Part of that entails protecting Chris from himself. “I’ll make a joke and most people will get it,” Chris says, “but some people will take it out of context.” This has, unfortunately, resulted in some of his better off-color Twitter jokes being deleted. One tweet compared Argentinian striker Carlos Tevez, a trollish little man who plays for Manchester City, to a Geico caveman. The other was from a Twitter debate when Wondolowski and Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez were sitting around one night, bored in their hotel room. Hernandez asked his followers to list their favorite Dave Chappelle Show
episodes. Wondolowski tweeted the correct answer: the Clayton Bigsby skit, which features Chappelle acting as a blind black man who becomes the unwitting leader of a white supremacist group. Lindsey had to remind Chris that some people might not understand why he was quoting a line about Bigsby learning the truth about his race and divorcing his wife “because she was a ****** lover,” as the tweet read. “I’m just a goofy guy, and I think there’ll be no consequences,” Chris says. “She sees down the line.”

hris Wondolowski’s timing on the pitch is impeccable. He’s not particularly fast or strong or crafty with the ball between his feet. Wondolowski just has a knack for finishing, being in the right place at the right time. But that couldn’t always be said of his career. While playing for Houston, coaches repeatedly passed over Wondolowski when doling out playing time. There were a slew of established forwards in front of him, including Dwayne DeRosario and Brian Ching, who helped the Dynamo winning MLS titles in 2006 and 2007.—titles one could argue belong to San Jose. Wondolowski consistently impressed in practices and reserve matches, but no coach wants to risk sitting a star for an untested, unproven and lowly paid no-name. “I have no animosity toward them, because if I was the coach I would have been playing these guys ahead of me,” Wondolowski says. “There were times where a forward was hurt and I’m like, ‘This is my chance. I’m going to show them I can play if I get this opportunity.’ But then they would kind of change the lineup around and bring in someone from midfield to forward, or change the formation. You start reflecting on yourself like, ‘Wow, am I that bad where they’re changing the formation around?’ Wondolowski went on to lead the reserve league in goals scored several seasons, but as his family liked to joke, “Yeah, it’s good, but it’s kind of leading the league for homeruns in Triple A,” says Stephen, who was also a part of the Dynamo for two seasons. Everything changed, however, when Wondolowski came back to
U.S. National Team defender who’s remarkably clean-cut these days after spending his career looking like a satanic ginger wizard, praised Wondolowski to the point of saying he deserves to be a Designated Player, meaning his contract should be boosted to the point it is exempt from the team’s salary cap, similar to the aging European stars who have been lured by dollars to the league. “Down the line I think we’ll be talking more, but I also think I owe a lot of my success to my teammates,” Wondolowski says. “The thing about my goals, I’m not dribbling through three or four guys or hitting 25 yards shots into the upper 90. A lot of my shots are making the smart run and having someone put a cross in right to me and finishing. That’s’ still a tough thing to do, but half the credit goes to the guy who created the opportunity.” The club ripped up Wondolowski’s contract the last two seasons, although it didn’t have to, which boosted his salary to $300,000 annually. “Each year you always feel he deserves his raise,” Yallop says. Wondolowski negotiates his own contracts, after he fired a former agent that didn’t always have his better interest at heart, according to his brother Stephen, who also used the agent. One thing Wondolowski won’t be able to negotiate, however, is his place on the U.S. National Team as the 2014 World Cup in Brazil draws closer. “It’s still two years away, but I think about it,” Wondolowski says. “I still have to take many steps to do that, but it’s a possibility. It’s a driving force for me, that’s for sure. I’m going to do everything in my power to be there.” And yet, his real focus never seems to stray too far from San Jose, the place that gave him his first true shot. Yallop likes to tell a story from when Wondolowski left the team to train with the national squad. “He’s away from the team and sends me a text to wish the guys all the best with the game,” Yallop says, pausing for effect. “He’s with the U.S National Team and he’s away and he’s thinking of us. I think that’s great. It’s good for us and shows you a lot about him.”

San Jose in a steal of a trade for Cam Weaver, who has scored just 10 goals in the four seasons since the swap. “I was at a place in my career where I knew I could play, I knew I had all the tools to play, and I got the opportunity,” Wondolowski says. “We had forwards that went down and Frank believed in me and said, ‘We’re staying with two forwards.’ I slid right in and scored a couple goals. Confidence goes a long ways.” After scoring three goals in 14 appearances during the 2009 season, Wondolowski stunned everyone by notching 18 goals in 2010. He followed that up with 16 more last season, a total he has already eclipsed this year. “The biggest thing for me was my mentality changed,” he says. “I went from having the mentality of, ‘Oh, I better not screw this up,’ to, ‘I’m going to score. I’m going to make this happen.’” His emergence as the best striker in the MLS coincides with the Earthquakes building a new $80 million stadium just west of San Jose’s airport. Team officials—a group that includes owner Lew Wolff, who desperately wants to relocate his Oakland A’s to San Jose, as well—hope to have it ready by the beginning of next season. Leaving the cozy, if not minor-leaguesized, confines of Buck Shaw Stadium at Santa Clara University—the smallest in MLS—will drastically improve the team’s revenue stream, which in turn could result in a massive, and welldeserved, raise for Wondolowski. San Jose, similar to Wolff ’s other franchise in Oakland, has been forced to take a Moneyball approach to building the club. Currently, the best player on the best team in the league is the 30th highest-paid player in MLS. Players like David Beckham, Donovan and a slew of other individuals you’ve probably never heard of earn more money in a season than the entire Earthquakes roster. But Wolff, speaking at halftime of a game Wondolowski scored three goals in to help beat Real Salt Lake 5-0, seems to realize the value of his star player, on and off the field: “It’s more than just his scoring; in the locker room, everywhere, he’s just a very decent human being.” On a recent ESPN telecast, commentator Alexi Lalas, a former

He’s joined by the incomparable Tootie Heath, a drummer whose credits include classic sessions by Wes Montgomery, John Coltrane
and his older brother, saxophonist/ composer Jimmy Heath. This concert is part of the Stanford Jazz Festival. (AG)

It’s almost indie-folk, but with all the folk elements buried in synthesizers. They’ve got all the makings of a solid arena rock band, but it comes off too neurotic and shy. King for the smooth but riveting “Praying Man”; samples a big, soulful dose of ’70s Blaxploitation ambiance; and unleashes a new set of multi-layered beats (especially on the mindbending “I Got This”) that sent the album to the top of the charts. These five British guys are a throwback to the days of the New Kids on the Block, though, more so than N Sync or the Backstreet Boys. They are cute, charming and completely harmless. But unlike NKOTB, they have the production value of 2012 at
their fi ngertips, so not only are they fingertips churning out some can’t-get-itout-of-your-head sweetheart pop singles, it’s flawlessly delivered. (AC)

More than a clothesline for music and dancing, the musical provides a critique of celebrity culture and a Chicago cynical view of American justice. “Uncle Sam is just and fair, and he wouldn’t put me in jail, because I’m innocent,” Runs through cries an unfortunate “murderess,” not crafty enough to Aug. 26; $17–$30 worm her way out of punishment. The audience can only shake their heads knowingly—of course Uncle Sam isn’t City Lights Theater fair. Company, San Jose. It’s easy to get caught up in the infectious music, but the unsympathetic characters remind us that this is really a dark satire. Interestingly, there are a few points in the City Lights production that take a mixed-media approach, filling in the action with grainy, newsreel-style projections. This places an extra level of alienation between the audience and the characters— an intriguing idea, even if the execution is awkward. There are several noteworthy performances, with Glenna Murillo’s mischievous Velma Kelly most prominent among them. Tim Reynolds appears as celebrity lawyer Billy Flynn, incidentally recalling his turn as Guido Contini last year in the City Lights production of Nine (both are egotistic male characters surrounded onstage by half-naked women). As Roxie’s sad-sack husband and the play’s lone nice guy, Jay Steele provokes sympathetic “awwws,” while Juanita Harris makes an especially good Matron Mama Morton. Another high point is Michelle Baker’s costume design for the female cast members. Reminiscent of Ziegfeld Follies getup, it is a welcome change from the Frederick’s of Hollywood–type lingerie often seen in stagings of Chicago. The flamboyance of the musical numbers is toned down, with mixed results. The opener, “All That Jazz,” and the mock ventriloquism of “We Both Reached for the Gun,” while fun, leave you wishing for a bit more oomph. On the other hand, “When You’re Good to Mama,” typically an upbeat and bawdy arrangement, works remarkably well here as a slow, cool jazz tune and is the show’s finest moment.—Sean Conwell

of Thomas Hardy’s 1892 Tess of the d’Urbervilles. Tess is the urmelodrama of the Victorians: a girl taken by fate as a hawk takes a mouse, crushed by the class system. In this version a group of pals from England are touring India. The privileged gang have an evening with a lot of Lonely Planet–Thorn Tree chat over a spliff concerning the most authentic places to visit. (“All you do in Goa is go to the beach. What could be more unIndian?”) The host is the raised-inEngland princeling Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed), who is supervising his father’s luxury hotel in Jaipur. During the course of a visit to a remote Jain temple, Jay spies Trishna (Freida Pinto). They have a second encounter after Trishna has
been injured in a traffic accident that destroyed her father’s truck. Jay offers the young lady a job at his hotel. It’s the beginning of Trishna’s downfall. Jay’s father (the eminent actor Roshan Seth) comes for a visit; being blind, he feels Trishna’s face and exclaims over her beauty in what looks like improvised dialogue. ( Jay chides his father, “You’re just making it up, aren’t you?” It seems likely.) But then the inevitable becomes evitable when Jay seduces the country girl who works for him. Trishna becomes Jay’s kept woman. Jay and Trishna get away to Mumbai and end up on the fringes of the Bollywood business, with appearances by actual Bollywood stars at the cafes. (It’s almost an inside joke: the man playing the Angel Clare part in this story is looked at as a show business “angel.”) Winterbottom (The Trip, The Killer Inside Me, etc.) serves up a
huge amount of the subcontinent. We’re supposed to condemn directors who go touristy, but I’m never sure why. He’s trying to make a thorough portrait of India, from the trad villages in the scorched northwest to a surfside condo in Mumbai. Winterbottom’s energy is unfocused but undeniable. It’s even hard to complain about his repetition: first the goat shot, then the monkey shot, then the monkey and the goat shot. There’s maturity in Winterbottom’s dedication to tragedy when he’s capable of comedy (especially when directing Steve Coogan). Trishna is certainly one of his most ambitious films in terms of the number of camera setups alone. It’s the director’s third Hardy adaptation, after the dire Jude and The Claim, which transplanted elements of The Mayor of Casterbridge to the Gold Rush era. But everything in Trishna looks as if it could have used more rehearsal. The soundtrack presents some soulfully impressive Indian-pop by Kavita Seth. Like the music, the visuals set a mood the actors seem to still be figuring out. And when the emotions get turbulent they seem to have come out of nowhere. In the last third, it’s as if the old India re-establishes itself: the preRaj India of princes and harems coming back to life at Jay’s luxury hotel, which is carved out of an old palace. Here, Trishna becomes a concubine. She’s bidden, essentially, to serve lunch and bend over for her sated, drowsy and increasingly truculent master. It’s in this last third where Pinto has to show her acting abilities. What she shows, as she did in Slumdog Millionaire, is that she’s an extremely beautiful and passive non-actress. Even the climactic last shot has to be freeze-framed, likely because Pinto couldn’t make it work in motion. Winterbottom can light up India, but he couldn’t light up Freida Pinto.

metroactive FILM THE INTOUCHABLES (R; 112 min.) It’s a seriously winning film, Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s The Intouchables—an example of how first-rate comedic acting can sell material that might not have flown otherwise. A larger than life, exuberantly handsome performer named Omar Sy dominates this buddy film as Driss. He is the caretaker of an aristocratic French paralytic who can only move his head. Philippe, the malade (Francoise Cluzet), likes Driss’s style. When a snobbish relative complains that people from the slums are without pity, Philippe agrees that’s exactly what he’s looking for: someone who won’t treat him with pity. This comedy stakes its ground as opposing middle-class timidity. The problem of being middle class is feeling that two other classes are condemning you simultaneously. The Intouchables suggests that the unhesitating grab for brio is the common privilege of the rich and the poor. That idea may be ridiculous, but it’s presented with flavor and humor here. THE WELL-DIGGER’S DAUGHTER (NR; 107 min.) Executed in a classic style, though still not a classic. It’s Daniel Auteuil’s version of a Marcel Pagnol novel, filmed by Pagnol himself in 1940, with Raimu in the lead; a story of pride and prejudice in the rural south of France. Eighteenyear-old Patricia (Astrid Berges-

Frisbey), the angel of her family, is seduced and impregnated by Jacques, a merchant’s son who has grown up to be a pilot in the French Air Force. Jacques’ too-proud family rejects the bastard, which slights the honor of Patricia’s father (Auteuil), the local well-digger. Meanwhile, the well-digger’s homely assistant Felipe (Kad Merad, in a role Fernadel once played) offers to give the baby his name. It’s solid and satisfying, though part of its solidity is a quotient of corn and ham. Maybe it’s just that
it’s gratifying to know there’s enough of Pagnol’s world left on the southern French backroads to provide locations for something this handsome. Also admirable is Pagnol’s passion for the mot juste (“It’s wise to beware of people who sell tools but don’t use them,� says the offended father). Fine work by the scene-stealing Emilie Cazenave (an Ann Miller lookalike) as the wise second daughter. The adorable baby that the filmmakers cast proves what used to be proverbial: “Love children are the loveliest.� (RvB)

The ATF Tour THE LEARNING CURVE crew has been making some of the sharpest and strangest hip-hop to come out of the L.A. underground in the last couple of years. In particular, Turtle (Ken Katagiri) and Bakus (Brandon Backhaus) are trippers on the mic, sporting influences that range from Dan the Automator and Del tha Funkee Homosapien to the Pixies Johnny V’s and Radiohead. The DevFits ROB CROW is known for doing pretty much whatever he wants. Besides his long tenure in the popular indie band Pinback, this includes bands that only the hippest of the hip have even heard of, and for all most of us know, may or may not have existed in our own space-time coordinates: Heavy Vegetable, Optiganally Yours, Physics Thingy, Other Blank Club Men, Goblin Cock (okay, the last one actually plays some pretty entertaining doom metal). So when Crow says “I’m Wed., Aug. 1 going to start a band that mashes up Misfits and Devo songs, and show videos of my kids recreating famous Devo videos 9pm; $5 in the background,” no one feels the need to say “that’s nuts.” It’s more like, “When do you want to tour?” And thank God, because now we have the DevFits, Crow’s band that debuted at the end of last year, and does exactly that. Pinback fans know that the San Diego–based Crow has long been enraptured by Glenn Danzig’s siren songs of punkhorror—the last time I saw them at Bottom of the Hill, they covered “Astro Zombies,” and I’m sure he’s done many more. The question of how he’ll mash them up with Devo’s herky-jerky New Wave makes this show a can’tmiss for fans of either band.—Steve Palopoli

;Xn^ ;Xpj “FROM SUNSET FRIDAY to sunset Saturday, your mind had to be on nobody but God,” says Phife Dawg, remembering weekends at his grandmother’s house growing up in last year’s documentary about A Tribe Called Quest, Beats, Rhymes and Life. “So I had to sneak and watch Soul Train. I had to sneak and watch Scooby Doo, or whatever cartoon was popping off at the time. But when it came to the block parties and the hip-hop, once I saw them grabbing mics and getting busy, I risked my livelihood, getting kicked out of the house and everything, just to be a part of it.” Phife Dawg performs So how did this hip-hop legend, who lived for his music, go on to Friday, July be the same one who later said, “I love hip-hop, but at the rate its 27 at Axis in going right now, I could do with or without it?” Santa Clara. That’s the strange story of Phife Dawg, who performs at Axis Nightclub in Santa Clara this Friday. Growing up in Queens as Malik Taylor, he was not just one of the founding members of Tribe, but the common demominator of the group, the one who basically brought them all together. His childhood best friend and fellow MC Q-Tip jumped out front to become the recognizable voice of Tribe on their first album, but on their second, 1991’s The Low End Theory, Phife started to emerge as an MC, especially on “Check the Rhyme,” one of their most famous songs. By their next, 1993’s Midnight Marauders, the interplay between Q-Tip and Phife was an integral part of their sound. After the group broke up, Phife put out one solo album in 2000, but the followup has been delayed by over a decade as he dealt with crippling health problems culminating in a kidney transplant in 2008. . Phife’s show is one of the first from Alan Lim and Johnny Caron, who as Avant Productions have started booking shows at Axis Nightclub in conjunction with longtime DJ Dave Dynamix. So far, they’ve been on a roll, bringing the kind of bigger hip-hop shows that the South Bay has never really had a spot for. Last weekend, Axis had a “Legends” show featuring pioneering Bay Area turntablists QBert, D-Styles and Shortkut of Invisibl Skratch Piklz. The night after Phife perfoms, they’ll host big-name house producer Miguel Migs, who got his start in Santa Cruz. Lim and Caron say they want to leverage Axis’ impressive capacity to fill a need in the South Bay: club entertainment that matters. The pair got their start in raves and underground parties years ago before taking on bigger events, and they’re excited to be booking the kind of mid-sized venue that people have been saying for years the valley desperately needs. Of course, it can be a tricky business, especially in the hugely competitive club scene. “A lot of people don’t focus on talent, they just focus on numbers,” says Caron. “We’re not just putting anyone up there to play some music.” —Steve Palopoli
