CARTOON FACTS AFTER SEEING DeCinzoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent cartoon about the local desalination debate (Posts, April 18), I was reminded of why so many people became disenchanted with his workâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and why he got dropped by Metro Santa Cruzâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;several years back.

While his imagery is always clever and contains the right level of irreverence for local political leaders, he frequently forgets something that good cartoonists know well: it is important that the criticism of the target be based on something pretty darn close to the facts.

If DeCinzoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desal cartoon were to be put into fully narrative form, it would quickly be dismissed as a bundle of lies, misinformation and severe distortion. For instance, the cartoony assertion that aggressive conservation has been rejected by the Santa Cruz City Council is just

ridiculous. The city has a conservation program that wins national awards. Our per-person use is the lowest in the state.

The well-drawn image of the city destroying â&#x20AC;&#x153;science based evidenceâ&#x20AC;? is breathtaking in its hypocrisy and falseness. The city and the desalination task force have done many years of serious scientific investigation on marine life, energy use and brine disposal. There are volumes of science-based reports on which the desal planning process is based and they are all available to the public.

My favorite part of the whole desal cartoon (aside from the fact that it was the first time Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen Katherine Beiers driving a steamroller) was the suggestion that the current City Council is out to destroy democracy a month after the council voted to put the desalination question on the ballot. It made me laugh to think that a political commentator like DeCinzo would have

forgotten to actually follow the recent news that he is commenting about in his cartoons. Perhaps his motto is: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Never let the facts get in the way of a good dig at the City Council.â&#x20AC;?

Learning Cycles Bike to Work Month raises money for a good cause

BOBBY D. Richardson has been working on bikes for 33 years, but he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t start teaching people about them until September.

Now the former bike mechanic instructs students at Scotts Valley High School in how to work on bikes, thanks to joint funding from the Santa Cruz County Office of Education and Project Bike Trip, a nonprofit thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gearing up for a bike-a-thon fundraiser on behalf of students next month.

Bike Tech classes, offered at six of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nine high schools, are getting students like Richardsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stoked about learning. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been really excited about it,â&#x20AC;? says Richardson, who received his vocational teaching credential this year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The feedback Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gotten is that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like no other class that they have, mostly because

itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands-on and authentic.â&#x20AC;?

Bike Tech offers lessons in reading, math and historyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all applied to the two-wheeled 19th-century invention.

Students read manuals and study bike history. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right here, right now.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no fidgeting or daydreaming in this class,â&#x20AC;? says Richardson, 60. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It demands your attention all the time.â&#x20AC;?

The first annual Two Wheeled Drive, cosponsored by Ecology Action and Project Bike Trip, will challenge people to set goals for how much they bike during the month of May. Participants make a personal challenge, for example like riding to work every day. Then they turn to family and friends to pledge money toward their efforts and the causes.

In addition to Bike Tech, the drive is also raising money for Bike Club, which meets at two middle schools each week, and Bike Smart, an

Ecology Action program that teaches elementary school children about cycling safety. Project Bike Trip director Katie DeClercq says her goal is to raise $25,000. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to shoot for,â&#x20AC;? DeClercq says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And I hope people are going to shoot high as well.â&#x20AC;?

As a baseline, DeClercq hopes to raise at least $12,000 in cash to match the $12,000 in prizes that have been donated to the cause. Prizes range from an Ibis HakkalĂźgi bicycle, valued at $1,400, to a Giro helmet and tires made by San Rafaelâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;based Wilderness Trail Bikes.

Other prizes reward meeting certain thresholdsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;like a Park Tool super patch kit for raising $100. Participants can earn bigger ticket items like Giro gloves, iPhone cases and bike saddles for raising more.

DeClercq expects to expand Bike

In some ways Bike Month is a natural outgrowth of its predecessor, Bike to Work Day, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Santa Cruz this year on May 10.

Fifteen years ago, as Bike to Work Day grew in popularity, Ecology Action launched Bike to Work Week.

Now environmentalists are upping the ante again with Bike Month.

With each step, cycling becomes more normalized. The first Bike to Work Day had 200 participants.

Last year the entire week, combined with an extra Bike to Work Day in October, had a combined ridership of 12,000. The first event in 1987 had two breakfast sites. This year, Ecology Action is planning for 40 breakfast sites in addition to 16 throughout the course of the week. The goal, says Ecology Actionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Piet Canin, is to change peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s commuting habits. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not about a week in spring or a day in October,â&#x20AC;? says Canin, who has been involved in Santa Cruzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bike to Work Week from the beginning. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about getting people to work with their schedule to take a bike ride a week, at least.â&#x20AC;?

Those who participate this May in the month-long Two-Wheeled Bike Drive will see the added benefit of their cycling and hard work going to support students who want to get some hands-on experience. Richardson says every bit helps. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We could always use more money to keep things going,â&#x20AC;? Richardson says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bikes are always entropy in action.

ON THE Monday after a hot weekend in town mobbed with tourists, Santa Cruz skies are solid and gray. The ocean is as flat as old beer from Cowellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Beach to the Moss Landing power plant, and Vice Mayor Hilary Bryant looks mighty lonely paddling out on her waxy board, carrying a mesh backpack filled with books meant for the surfers who are lurking inland until they can ambush the real swell like a pack of alligators.

Which was around 6:15am, according to Bryant, and she missed it. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got 20 copies of Octavia Butlerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kindred wrapped in plastic sandwich bags for the two surf school students out in yellow vests, who will soon have something better to do than mope around on waves slower than tree sap. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My husband was saying that is the most ridiculous idea heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ever heard,â&#x20AC;?

Bryant says, zipping up her wetsuit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the worst place to have a book.â&#x20AC;?

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right, but World Book Night U.S. knows no boundaries in the quest for new or light readers. Kindred is a science fiction novel about time travel to the era of Southern slavery, and is one of 29 other titles being given away April 23 throughout the county courtesy of Bookshop Santa Cruz. Half a million totally free books will be handed out nationwide in the name of knowledge. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just started it, I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t finished it,â&#x20AC;?

were chosen by members of the Santa Cruz Book Club. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interesting. For me the coolest part is itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a style that I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t normally pick up. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not usually drawn to science fiction.â&#x20AC;?

Luckily it was given to her, and it got 4.5 stars on Amazon. Other titles being given away include The Poisonwood Bible, The History of Love, I Know Why the Caged Bird Singsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;even the muchâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;library-waitlisted The Hunger Games. People pay good money for those books.

Bryant paddles out to spread the good word to surf schoolers and their instructor, and tries to persuade a batch of three kayakers to take a copy right before one flips over and nearly drowns.

They seemed a little stressed out, she says afterward. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great,â&#x20AC;? says Santa Cruz Surf School owner Dylan Greiner as he climbs out of the surf like a bleached blond seal with his plastic-wrapped book. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to add it to my bookshelf.â&#x20AC;?

He also intends to read it. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I actually have people to take the extras to,â&#x20AC;? assures Bryant. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Have you heard of Operation Surf Santa Cruz?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a project where they have army veterans who have been injured, typically amputees, and they do a weeklong surfing rehabilitation program.

In the Santa Cruz Mountains, a dedicated crew of believers say theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re closing in on Bigfoot

WHEN I found out Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be going Bigfoot hunting with Michael Rugg, I figured weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d hike deep into the woods to some remote destination to conduct our search. In actuality, we spend most of the time in Felton, right along the road and close to the nearby homes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bigfoots donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be in a big wilderness area to exist,â&#x20AC;? Rugg, who owns the Bigfoot Discovery Museum, explains to me on our outing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They can exist around the edge of town.â&#x20AC;?

I meet up with the crew at Taqueria Vallarta in Felton, where we eat tacos and wait for the sun to go down before heading out the crewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usual spots. The first place is partway up a winding road in a neighborhood where Rugg says heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gotten several reports of Bigfoot sightings. We park

in a dark space between two homes and settle in, and I get a chance to get to know the team.

Rugg, the undisputed leader, has a commanding presence despite his small stature and calm voice. At 66, with a gray beard and full head of gray hair, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surprisingly energetic and passionate. Ralph Jack, who has been working with Rugg since 2006, is a funny, happy-go-lucky guy with long hair and a thick California accent. Jack says he was actually a prospector in his younger days, and that he owned a landscaping business until recently. In stark contrast is Ashley Membree, a Cabrillo College student in her early twenties whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been volunteering at the museum in her spare time for a few months.

Bigfoot hunting, it turns out,

involves a lot of sitting and waiting.

Membree holds a boom mic and headphones, aiming it at the nearby mountain range. Jack has a camcorder and audio tape recorder on constant record, just in case. Rugg looks at different pockets of trees with a pair of night vision binoculars. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Did you hear those coyotes?â&#x20AC;? Jack asks me. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where there are coyotes, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sasquatches.â&#x20AC;?

I put on the headphones, but can only hear coyotes.

Rugg explains to me that normally they go out much later in the night, usually starting around 11pm, when all the people and cars have quieted down. But even late, he tells me, they detect very little activity most nights. ¨ #

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have some Bigfoots down here (in Santa Cruz County) that are real people-savvy. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been hanging around us for years and they know how to get around us,â&#x20AC;? Rugg explains.

That doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean there arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t successful nights. Earlier at the museum, Rugg played me two audio clips. The first was recorded at the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in Aptos three years ago. It starts out with a group of coyotes howling.

Then something else, a totally different high-pitched howl, arises in the background. It gets louder and quieter and louder again, lasting a minute and a half.

The second clip also starts out with a bunch of coyotes, but in the middle of their howling, somethingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;it sounds like a gorillaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;grunts.

Rugg shows me video from the night of the first clip. They had gone to this particular spot because someone had called them up and told them that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d recently seen signs of a Bigfoot. Jack, of course, recorded the whole evening on the

camcorder. As they were walking they caught a pungent odor and heard that high-pitched howl. Later, when they walked back to that same spot, the odor was gone. They determined that meant the odor was transient and couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have been coming from a rotting animal carcass. The way they figured it, that smell came from something on the move.

When they later watched the video, they saw in the distance a blurry figure moving between two trees. When Rugg shows me the footage itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to tell what the image is, but clearly itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something moving. Because of all these factorsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; the howl, the smell, the report of a sighting, the footage itselfâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Rugg believes they taped a Bigfoot.

Of course, he also realizes that this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the kind of thing to make any public announcements over. They need something bigger. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been sitting back quietly collecting evidence, building a database, going out and testing stuff, watching what everybody else is ¨ $

It annoys Rugg that other members of the Bigfoot community, some of whom heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friends with, make public statements of having found evidence when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only circumstantial. But, as Rugg notes, these are the people getting the funding, while The Bigfoot Discovery Museum struggles every year to keep the doors open.

Refuge for Believers When Michael Rugg was 4 years old, he saw something that forever changed his life. It happened on a family camping trip near the Eel River in Humboldt County, after he had wandered off into the woods alone. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how he describes it: â&#x20AC;&#x153;As soon as I turned, there was this great big man. We made eye contact.

There was nothing threatening about it. I was just awestruck because I had no frame of reference for this thing. I heard my parents screaming, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Mikey, where are you?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; So I ran back. I told them, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Come see the big hairy man.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; We went running back over there and it was gone. My parents looked around and said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry, it was probably just a tramp.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Well, that was the weirdest tramp Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever seen.â&#x20AC;?

That was in 1950, one year before reports of Yeti were coming out of the Himalayas and eight years before reports of Bigfoots were being published in the Humboldt Times.

Now, 62 years later, Rugg has spent his life searching for indisputable evidence that Bigfoot exists. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never had another face-to-face sighting like that first experience, though not from a lack of trying.

While most of Ruggâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time has gone into research, he has made several trips back up to Northern California to find another Bigfoot. And for the last eight years, Rugg has gone Bigfoot hunting nearly every night here in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

In 2004, Rugg turned his Bigfoot obsession into a Bigfoot business.

Located on Main Street in Felton, the Bigfoot Discovery Museum occupies a small unassuming building with several wooden Bigfoot statues out front. The front part of the museum is set up like a roadside attraction, packed

with toys, comic books and album covers. The second half is more of a research center, loaded with newspaper clippings, video clips, books, skulls and other items Rugg believes point to the existence of Bigfoot.

But the real treasure in the museum is Rugg. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a walking Bigfoot encyclopedia. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are few people on the planet that have thought about Bigfoot as much as I have,â&#x20AC;? Rugg says.

At the Bigfoot Discovery Museum, I watch as Rugg tells his visitors about his Bigfoot encounter and eagerly answers all their Bigfoot questions. He isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lying when he says heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an expert on the subject. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I heard something about Patterson giving a deathbed confession,â&#x20AC;? one guest remarks, referring to the infamous grainy 1967 footage Roger Patterson and Robert Gimlin shot of a hairy lumbering creature they claimed was a Bigfoot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a common myth,â&#x20AC;? Rugg responds. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Neither man have claimed it was a hoax. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve met Robert Gimlin. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never made a nickel off that film. Still, to this day he swears he watched his buddy film a Bigfoot.â&#x20AC;?

One of the first things Rugg explains to me is that many people come to the museum because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had a Bigfoot experience, or maybe even a paranormal encounter of some sort. They have no one to talk about it with, and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re afraid their friends and family will laugh at them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hear their stories. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t put down witnesses. They can come in and tell me the sky is red and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll listen to them. The museum serves a psychiatric purpose,â&#x20AC;? Rugg says.

It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take more than a couple of hours before I see exactly what Rugg is talking about. A couple in their early thirties comes into the museum, and the guy tells Rugg he saw a Bigfoot seven years earlier in Big Basin. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kept this experience a secret from everyone in his life except his girlfriend for fear of being ridiculed.

Rugg patiently listens to a detailed account of the sighting, then tells the man about other such sightings in the Santa Cruz Mountains and comments on how similar their descriptions of Bigfoot have been to his. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know other people were ¨

seeing Bigfoots out here,â&#x20AC;? the man says, clearly feeling better. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re advocates for eye-witnesses,â&#x20AC;?

Rugg tells me later. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re saying people that claim that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen little green men and stuff like that might be telling the truth. How can you be so goddamn sure they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t?â&#x20AC;?

Hairy Situation Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not surprising this topic gets Rugg riled up. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had his fair share of negative experiences for being so candid about his belief in Bigfoot.

The one experience that angers him the most, he says, happened in the mid-1960s when he was a student at Stanford. Rugg wanted to write his final paper for a physical anthropology class on Bigfoot. The professor objected, telling Rugg point blank that Bigfoot wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t real. Rugg, of course, insisted, and the professor told him he could write the paper so long as he provided a bibliography that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t include True Magazine or Argosy, both popular pulp magazines of the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;60s.

Rugg went to work with a vengeance, turning in a 38-page tome with a four-page bibliography instead of the required seven pages total. He got a C and a note saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve made a case. This is still in the realm of UFOs.â&#x20AC;?

Forty years later, Rugg still deals with peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teasing and harassing.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;I get the one-finger salute quite often walking down the street,â&#x20AC;? Rugs says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People driving by, they flip me off and yell, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Bigfoot sucks!â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had people stuff notes in the door saying, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Good luck with your scam.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had rocks heaved at the museum.â&#x20AC;?

He hopes at least that he can help other people dealing with these sorts of things by making his museum a sanctuary for people with experiences of the unexplainable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People have been talking about sentient beings that they come in contact with that seem to be coming from some other place or reality for centuries. It sounds crazy. It sounds impossible. So those people are shoved aside. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re marginalized. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re considered to be nutcases and some of them end up in insane asylums,â&#x20AC;? says Rugg. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think some of them have had genuine events that we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to call those people all fools and liars.â&#x20AC;?

Rugg isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t without people anxious to help him keep the museum alive.

One of them is Kepi Ghoulie, former lead singer for the pop-punk band the Groovie Ghoulies, who were famous for singing songs about ghosts, vampires and, yes, Bigfoots. Three years ago, Ghoulie put together a fundraising concert at the Bigfoot Museum with several bands. The year after that, he held it at the Crepe Place. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;He Told You Soâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; People have been talking about large hairy bipeds hiding in the woods for hundreds of years. But it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until the 1950s that Bigfoot reports made the mainstream media and had people all over the world talking about them. In 1967, footage dubbed the Patterson Film was shot in the mountains of Northern California allegedly capturing an actual Bigfoot walking through the woods. Whether the film was a hoax or the real thing is a subject of great controversy. But thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no question in Ruggâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mind. He has the footage playing on an iMac in the museum on continuous repeat. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I accept that film as a type specimen.

To me thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s as good as a dead one on a slab. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still the single best piece of evidence for Bigfoot,â&#x20AC;? Rugg says.

But Rugg understands that this footage alone isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t good enough for everyone. He hopes to find actual DNA evidence, which heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to see tested, vetted and written about in a scientific journal so he can end the Bigfoot debate once and for all. He says heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s confident this will happen, and whether heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the person to do it or someone else doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter, just so long as it happens in his lifetime. In fact, Rugg announced a couple years back that he would not cut his hair till someone proves Bigfootâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s existence.

The decision to open the museum and devote 100 percent of his time to Bigfoot came after a brief stint in the corporate world. After graduating Stanford in 1968 with a degree in art history, Rugg spent most of his life living like a bohemian, selling handmade dulcimers and doing freelance graphic design work to make ends meet. But in 1997 he landed a lucrative full-time position doing graphic design for Cintara, a brand building company in Silicon Valley. In 2000, when the dot-com

bubble burst, he, like a lot of people, was out of work. He spent a couple years re-evaluating his life. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I came to what you might call a mid-life crisis. I was getting older.

I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want my headstone to say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;He was another idiot that chased Bigfoot.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I want it to say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;He told you so,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? Rugg says.

In other words, Bigfoot could no longer be a part-time pursuit. From that point on he would eat, sleep and dream Bigfoot.

One thing Rugg hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t counted on was that he would meet so many people that had seen Bigfoots in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Rugg writes down every story people tell him about a Bigfoot sighting in Santa Cruz County. He has a large map in his museum and puts pins at the locations of the most compelling sightings.

One former Santa Cruz resident, Colette Alexander, told Rugg she saw a Bigfoot in 1999 up Highway 9, just one mile from downtown Santa Cruz. She related her story to me. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was eating lunch with a friend.

I looked over into the bushes and I saw this young juvenile Bigfoot.

I was shocked cause it was actually mimicking me eating my sandwich,â&#x20AC;?

Alexander said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It looked strangely human.â&#x20AC;?

Before this encounter, Alexander says she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have an opinion one way or the other on whether Bigfoots were real or not. She found Rugg on the Internet and contacted him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was absolutely insane. I thought this was kind of weird, like, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know, a Bigfoot near downtown Santa Cruz. I talked to Michael and he told me about other people that had sightings in the area,â&#x20AC;? Alexander said.

Rugg hears stories like this every day. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heard so many, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s altered his theories on the intelligence capacity of Bigfoots. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem logical that a dumb ape could be so adept at hiding and so aware of us and our relationship to them,â&#x20AC;? Rugg says.

year, he is tentatively planning to do one this year in August. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love the museum,â&#x20AC;? Ghoulie says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love Michael. I love the idea of it. I love roadside America. I want to do whatever I can to keep that thing stay open. I love having faith or belief in magic or whatever you want to call it.

WHAT IMPULSE drives people to create? And who chooses such an (often) unappreciated, solitary voyage in the first place?

These are two of the central questions explored over a 12-year period by essayist and author Tom Bissell, whose new nonfiction collection, Magic Hours: Essays On Creators and Creation (Believer Books, $14), highlights a cross-section of writers, artists and filmmakersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;from the relatively obscure to the relatively famousâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;all connected by their ability to produce something from nothing.

A â&#x20AC;&#x153;magic hourâ&#x20AC;? is the cinematic term for brief periods at dawn and dusk that allow for filming and create striking visual effects. Bissell also uses it as an apt descriptor for the somewhat mystical, hard-to-explain process of creation itself. There is much to appreciate in these pieces, not the least of which is the authorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s empathy and deep curiosity, along with a willingness to argue anybody down. These arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all glowing appreciationsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;in some cases, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the exact oppositeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;as much as theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ruminations on why something is relevant, or what makes certain people tick.

In the bookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opener, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unflowered Aloes,â&#x20AC;? Bissell argues that classic literature, and its survival, is more arbitrary than one may realize. Much of what is celebrated 100 years after itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s published is happenstance, Bissell writes, oftentimes thanks to a single

influential critic, interjecting family member or even (in the case of Moby Dick) an unlikely discovery in a bookstoreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s used bin which, through a series of fortunate events, brought the seafaring novel back into the public eye. Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville and Walt Whitman are presented as a trio of writers who history surely wouldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve forgotten without outside interference.

And what about the aspiring Melvilles out there, those who just need a bit of guidance to create their own timeless classic? Be warned, budding writers, that not every how-to manual you pull off the bookshelf is particularly helpful, Bissell reports. In a piece called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Writing About Writing About Writing,â&#x20AC;? Bissell cunningly uses clunky passages of writerly advice against their creators, disputing longheld truths line by line. The simple act of throwing a writerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s words back in his or her face is both potent and hilarious. (This contentious method is also at play in an essay about the Underground Literary Alliance, a group centered on protesting the â&#x20AC;&#x153;professionalizationâ&#x20AC;? of writing.) Bissell doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a lot of patience for perceived phoniness, cutting down Natalie Goldberg, author of the bestselling Writing Down the Bones, whom he calls a â&#x20AC;&#x153;cunning egomaniac.â&#x20AC;?

Nor does Bissell pull punches when it comes to Anne Lamottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bird by Bird, some of which he considers â&#x20AC;&#x153;beneath her readers.â&#x20AC;? And Bissell even takes Stephen King to task for occasionally pretending to be dumb in his own On Writing. (Bissell doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to care too much about burned bridges in the lit community.)

Bissell appears in some of his stories, but generally on the outskirts.

Exceptions include an essay about one of his novelist heroes, Jim Harrison, which feels less like a standard profile

A writer asks what makes artists create

Bissell writes so convincingly about the Michigan-born writerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s talents that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll feel a tug to go Harrisonshopping as soon as you finish the piece. Here, Bissell is using his roots as a jumping-off pointâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Harrison is an old friend of his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Bissell grew up in Northern Michigan, the desolate, woodsy setting of many of Harrisonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s storiesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which branches out into a many-splendored reflection on what it means to be a writer today.

Bissell also discusses creation as it pertains to war, examining some of the documentary films that have come out of Iraq and Afghanistan in the last decade, which serve as one of the few real ways to bring some of the horrors of war back home. When itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s justified, as in the case of political writer Robert D. Kaplan, Bissell has no

problem calling him an â&#x20AC;&#x153;incompetent thinker and a miserable writer,â&#x20AC;? before going on to explain why heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been routinely taken seriously by the likes of President Clinton, and how Kaplanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s writing directly affected foreign policy.

Within Bissellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bluntness lives a finely tuned ear for comic timing.

This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a flukeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a humor writer. Sometimes, as in the piece about an indie movie filming in his tiny hometown of Escanaba, Mich., he is a man revisiting his past. Other times, a lingering interest in a subject will lead to a meditation on writing, creation and life. And whether heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s examining David Foster Wallace, Two and a Half Men or voice-acting in video games, Bissell (only 37 this year) seems to have a lot of this stuff figured out. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had his share of magic hours himself. 0

THEREâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S a scene early in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story where the young Cox, played by Conner Rayburn, hears a grizzled old blues man (David â&#x20AC;&#x153;Honeyboyâ&#x20AC;? Edwards) play the guitar and asks to try it out.

Naturallyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;this is a parodyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the 6year-old is as skilled and soulful as the blues veteran, and his fate is sealed.

The blues didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite work out that way for John C. Reilly, star of the film and the force behind roots music outfit John Reilly and Friends, which comes to Moeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Alley this Sunday. It was in his early twenties, just as he was learning guitar, that he first felt the tug of the blues. He even started a band, but it just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Somehow, in the back of my mind, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel like I was totally suited to blues music even though I love it,â&#x20AC;? Reilly says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Somehow I felt like I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t earn the misery it takes to be a great blues singer.â&#x20AC;? He adds, which a touch of that shambling humility that comes through in so many of his characters, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been fortunate.â&#x20AC;?

Though Reillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earliest foray into music had been at age 12 with his and his brothersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; supremely awesome rock & roll cover band Shark Fighter (John sang the Mick Jagger and Bon Scott parts), he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t head toward rock & roll. Instead he picked up on a thread from his childhood: the old-timey Irish music his mother had played when he was growing up. Well, that and a bluegrass sampler cassette heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d bought on a whim at a 7-Eleven in college because he liked The Beverly Hillbillies theme music and saw that Flatt & Scruggs were on the tape. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I picked it up and immediately was drawn to the Stanley Brothers,â&#x20AC;? he says.

No surprise, then, that John Reilly

TIME MACHINE Becky Stark, John C. Reilly and Tom Brosseau put on an Americana show at Moeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Alley on April 29. and Friends features Reilly singing bluegrass and preâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;â&#x20AC;&#x2122;60s country in close harmony with Becky Stark, the crystal-cut gamine voice of neofolk outfit Lavender Diamond, and singing storyteller Tom Brosseau (â&#x20AC;&#x153;one of the only guys who can sing higher than meâ&#x20AC;?). Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recorded singles with both of them, Jack Black producing. Reillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s everyman, populist vibe suffuses these recordings and the performances were captured on YouTube. The harmonies are densely textured and the performances have a roadhouse feel.

Reilly says thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something else about bluegrass, what he calls â&#x20AC;&#x153;an intense spiritual component without the dogma.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of bluegrass is religious, and I had a block against it for a while: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ah, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boring, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the same stuff over and over, Jesus this and Jesus that.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; And then I had this light bulb moment. These are songs of devotion, and they transcend religion.

Because even if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re singing â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Jesusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; over and over, you could be feeling â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Buddhaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the ocean.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; These songs are a gateway to spirituality.â&#x20AC;?

Not to say Sundayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance will be some kind of churchy affair. A big band with pedal steel and upright bass and guitarist Willie Watson of Old Crow Medicine Show will keep things hopping throughout the live show, which is by far Reillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite way to play. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something special that happens when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in a room and you hear a song played live,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It ends up being really special.â&#x20AC;?

BLAKEâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S BACK Oakes founding provost Herman Blake returns to UCSC this week for the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 30-year anniversary.

;756BG =/93A OAKES COLLEGE started in 1972 as something of an experiment, a multi-culturalâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;themed resident UCSC college that represented a serious departure from the norm. As Don Rothman, senior writing lecturer emeritus, recalls, it soon became clear that the faculty there was doing things differently and leaving a mark. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The faculty, staff and students had a sense that we were part of changing the world,â&#x20AC;? says Rothman, who hosts founding Oakes provost Herman Blake this Friday at the Humanities Lecture Hall as part of Alumni Weekend festivities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And we werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t embarrassed to say that. There are a lot of dangers in having a mission. You can also derive a huge amount of solidarity and courage.â&#x20AC;?

Rothman says Oakes faculty and staff quickly realized the student bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;largely made up of working-class students and people of colorâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;would require an approach different from the one already in place at UCSCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other six colleges. For one thing, they would need to focus on teaching students how to write. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was still this illusion that students were already coming in ready for college writing,â&#x20AC;?

Rothman says.

Oakes College also offered health and science classes geared toward students who might not have had much exposure to such courses in high school. Rothman adds that Blake, now at Medical University of South Carolina, and the rest of the Oakes faculty were ahead of their time in recognizing studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Any college that wanted to make a difference in the lives of these students and in the lives of our society collectively would of course include this,â&#x20AC;? HAS THE WORLD suffered enough from pirates? In one of the best jokes in The Pirates! Band of Misfits, a crewmember observes, â&#x20AC;&#x153;You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just say â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;arrrâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and make everything better.â&#x20AC;?

This sweet, winning and delightfully funny new full-length stop-action cartoon might be hard to sell. Perhaps the film will have a guaranteed audience from families who remember how good Aardman Animations is from Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and others.

It relates the saga of an indifferently abled pirate and his crew, including all due adventures (sword fights, chases, last-minute rescues from the chopping block).The film also serves as a showbiz allegory. The pirate captain (voiced

by Hugh Grant) aims for the Pirate of the Year awardâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;essentially, an oversized version of those rings they used to have in gumball machines, complete with genuine rubyette in the eye socket. Flashier candidates sadly outdistance him.

Lured to fame, the captain is a mark for schemers. One is the evil Queen Victoria (Imelda Staunton). The other is the conniving Charles Darwin (David Tennant), who tragically betrays his principles in the hopes of meeting girls.

Lord said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were concerned about those other pirates spoiling the market place for us, but our approach was the completely different. We started from a whole different place. If we refer to anything, it is to the classic pirate movies, such as Treasure Island or the Burt Lancaster film The Crimson Pirate.â&#x20AC;?

The Pirates! had just gone No. 1 in England. On tour in the United States, Lord had just tweeted that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d visited Pixar. Was there much similarity between the Emeryville campus and Aardman headquarters? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Um, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit of different world.

Pixar is a little bit like heavenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the grass is green, the sky is blue, the people wander around with seraphic smiles on their faces. But actually the job is boring. ... They have to work at computers all day. In our world, we have the real sets. Our studio looks a bit like Aladdinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cave [with] 40 different miniature units all going at once with black-velvet curtains

between them to keep the light out. All of the jewel-like propsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enticing.â&#x20AC;?

But if the facilities are different, the work is essentially the same. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People ask how long a film takes.

Whenever I answer, there are gasps of horror and astonishment. All animated films take about five years, whether theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re made by us or Pixar or DreamWorks. There is an element of the handmade in our work. People think you must be so patient to move the characters fractions of an inch. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done with computers.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all in the same business. We just use different tools.â&#x20AC;?

All worth it, perhaps, to instruct growing children in the story of Queen Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secret life as a ninja.

According to Lord, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s likely the most historically inaccurate film ever made. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s magnificently wrongâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;in one scene we have Jane Austen and the Elephant Man together. She died 50 years before Mr. Merrick was born.

the crew asked about the costumes, I told them it was set in the olden days, so make it look classic.â&#x20AC;?

Among the dunce-capped history here is the presence of Polly, the dodo that the pirate captain mistakes for a parrot. The last of these birds had died more than 150 years before the film is set. You come out of The Pirates! longing for a pet dodo. How does one animate them? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surprisingly easy,â&#x20AC;? Lord finished. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about the size of a squash ball.

Big wide hips, very short legs, a very amusing sort of swinging-butt walk, big wide eyes, a little sensitive smile on the beak. The beak is just gently wired to give quite subtle little glimpses of optimism.â&#x20AC;?

Such subtle glimpses, such increments, are Aardmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specialty, and once again these claymation wizards have come up with treasure.

inspirationâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time again for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dare to Pairâ&#x20AC;? food and wine challenge, coming up fast on Sunday, April 29. This delightful moveable feast happens once again at the various tasting rooms of the Surf City Vintners, at Swift and Ingalls streets on the Westside.

From noon until 3:30pm this Sunday, Cabrillo Collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s culinary students will be teamed with a specific winery and create dishes designed to bring out the best of both. Celebrity judges as well as inquiring foodies will get a chance to sample and find their own favorite match-ups. The â&#x20AC;&#x153;peopleâ&#x20AC;? will vote for their favorites, while chefs and restaurateurs, including Sherry Moise of Johnnyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Harborside and the Shadowbrookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ted Burke, will make their choices. Awards will be announced at roughly 4:30pm at the afterparty at Copious Winery, where the throngs can applaud the winners while enjoying apps (the edible kind, not the digital kind), live music and general partying.
